Jack Layton Dies - If the death of Jack Layton is one of those defining moments in Canadian history, it’s because Layton stands as one of the defining figures in Canadian politics in the 21st century.

When Canadians hear Monday morning that the leader of New Democratic Party and the official Opposition was dead, a collective shudder went from coast to coast.

The message was consistent in each province: Allies of the policy of recognizing the vitality Layton, leadership, and the freshness he brought to the NDP, and many who disagreed with his politics still admit that Layton was a great Canadian.

In fact it was, and in that imaginary wall where the names of Canadians are great cut, Layton is the Sir John A. McDonald, Baldwin and LaFontaine, CD Howe, Tommy Douglas, John Diefenbaker and Pierre Trudeau, to name a few.

The National Development Plan was founded in 1961, derived from the then-60-yearold Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. While the NDP has governed in every province at some point, Layton was the largest party in the national scenario of what had gone before.

A clever politician, Layton stepped back as the conservative liberals waving wildly, hit hard by the scandal, with attack ads and innuendo. Layton knew this would only be open more bases for the National Development Plan and just wait.

As Machiavelli observed in favor of political fortune is ready to grab, the Bloc Québécois in Quebec imploded. Layton wasted no time to reinvigorate the wing of the party in that province. The result is the National Development Plan left is the official opposition to the conservative right.

Layton was a man of great integrity. Once under way, never faltered. People mocked him for saying during the campaign he was running to be prime minister when his ability to fix his residence at 24 Sussex was practically nil.

But I knew I could not be otherwise if he wanted his party to be taken seriously by Canadians. It became federal NDP leader to do things by halves.

Or led his party in a bid for victory, even though the possibility was remote, or that he was betraying those who support democratic values?? And is built in this nation.

Several people, including Qualicum Parksville-Rep. Ron Cantelon, watched Layton never delivered to the furious rhetoric, divisive comments or negative attacks. He allowed members of his party do any of those things either.

That’s not to say that Layton was not able to get hits on respect, but effectively. He finished a brand style of Stephen Harper in a memorable exchange during the 2008 election debates when asked about statements by conservative politicians promised. “Where are they, under the sweater?” Layton said Harper.

Cantelon and puts the finger on what Layton in life, and now in death, is a figure so crucial for Canadian politics.

“He showed that politics should be treated without ending a politically paralyzed as the U.S.,” said Cantelon.

In an era of attack ads and a cult of personality politics that seek to undermine the Layton others, and how they ran the National Development Plan was an oasis. He combined the good qualities of a moral man with a shrewd politician.

If in the coming weeks and months ahead, Canada will move with the loss of Layton and we can only hope that the policy is towards ethical practice.

DMX Release - Problems rapper DMX was released from a prison in Arizona on Tuesday after spending seven months behind bars for violating probation, said his manager. The rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was released from prison in Yuma, in western Arizona, and was received by a member of its management team, a security guard and a driver, Nakai manager told Reuters in Walker a telephone interview.

“His first words were:” I’m home, ‘”Walker said, adding that Simmons called his wife after his release and plans to see her two-month-old daughter on Monday.

“I can tell you one thing, it will not go there (in jail) again,” he said.

Simmons, 40, was jailed in December after telling a judge that he had broken the rules of his probation by consuming alcohol during a concert in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Who had received probation for attempted aggravated assault and using a false name to avoid paying a hospital bill and 7500?

Simmons, whose albums include “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot” and “Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood” has a long history of legal problems in Arizona.

Simmons was cited six times for rules infractions while in prison, including most recently not undergoing a drug test that delayed its release for a week.

Simmons said Walker plans to return to a recording studio in Arizona to finish work on a yet-to-be named new album, including a single with fellow rapper Busta Rhymes.

Teen Killed Parents Had Party - A neighbor said that Hadley knew that Tyler was playing basketball in the driveway with his father – not the accused of beating his parents to death with a hammer and then a party, while their bodies were hidden in the master bedroom.

Police said dozens of people attended the party advertised on Facebook, apparently unaware of the bloody scene in the house locked. Hadley, 17, expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday in Port St. Lucie. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Blake and Jo-Mary Hadley, who police believe were beaten in the head and torso, on Saturday, shortly after his son posted on Facebook to tell friends of the party.

The teen was being held without bail in a juvenile detention center in Fort Pierce, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Neighbors and some high school classmates were surprised Hadley.

“He just seemed normal, I did not think anything was wrong with him,” Hadley said Johnna’s friend Izzo Miami television station WSVN.

Neighbor Raeann Wallace said he had known the family since before Tyler was born Hadley.

“This is not the Tyler I remember. What happened? … He and his father were shooting hoops (on entry).”

On Saturday night, 60 people attended the party in the community about 50 miles north of West Palm Beach, according to Port St. Lucie police spokesman Tom Nichols. They were strong enough to cause a noise complaint and a visit by police. When they arrived at 1:30 am on Sunday to warn people about noise, the match was breaking, said Nichols.

Then, police said, they received a tip that a murder may have occurred. They returned home at 4:20 am, the search for bodies covered with towels, files, books and other household items, and hammer between them.

The mother, 47, was an elementary school teacher. The father, 54, worked for Florida Power and Light. The Hadleys also had a son 23-year-old who lives out of state.

Autopsies were under way, but police said they believed he died of blunt trauma force.

Hadley had attended school St. Lucie West Centennial High, police said, but did not graduate. They said they did not know what the motive was.

“Potter” sold a million records and 15.5 in IMAX theaters, according to the company of the big screen. Conversion of 3-D movie, however, produced mediocre results, as only 43 percent of the film debut came in 3-D screens. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”, by comparison, harvesting 60 percent of its opening from 3-D projections. Overseas, where the public still in love with 3-D, was “Potter” in three dimensions share a strong 61 percent. Speaking of foreigners, “Potter” and grossed 307 million in 59 countries, surpassing “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Stranger Tides” and 260.4 million for the most external opening of all time. Among the relics, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” dropped 55 percent to 21.3 million, bringing the cumulative total of the action film to 302.8 million. The comedy “The Boss horrible” and “Zookeeper” held up well, slipping only 38 percent and 39 percent and 17.6 million and 12.3 million respectively. Pixar’s “Cars 2,” completed the five and 8.3 million.

In limited release, the historical drama “Snow Flower” and “Secret Fan” made of 24 rooms and 136,000, while Errol Morris’s documentary “Tabloid” sold 101 000 and 14 localities.

Entertainment Distributor ARC has not released a specific estimate of Sarah Palin’s new documentary “The Undefeated,” but a source close to the film said it earned between 60,000 and 75,000 and 10, and theaters. And Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” became the director of the highest grossing film with a cumulative total of 41.8 million, from the 1986 film “Hannah and Her Sisters.”

The Japanese team, who always needed the inspiration and emotional support to their fellow citizens at home still recovering from a devastating earthquake and tsunami, recently defeated the U.S. 3-1 in a penalty shootout.

After each game, the team from Japan was a sign that said “For our friends in the world – Thank you for your support.”

The United States, which was considered a favorite to win the cup, made a dramatic rebound after eliminated Brazil in a penalty kick in the quarterfinals, raising hopes that the team can bring home the Cup for the third time.

Team USA dominated much of the final game Sunday in Frankfurt, Germany. Alex Morgan scored the team’s first goal on 69 minutes. However, Japan tied the game when Aya Miyama scored the equalizer 12 minutes later. The Americans took the lead again during the time in the 104th minute when Abby Wambach made goal with a header. However, they played the lead just six minutes to win their third World Cup title when Homare Sawa of Japan scored another tie. U.S. had won the Women’s World Cup in 1991 and 1999.

I do not think the fans would not have realized or, following Morgan on Twitter exploded, sending more than 100,000 fans in just minutes after her goal on Sunday. Perhaps the two goals and Abby Wambach will help enough for coach Pia Sundhage to her home from now on.

Strategies for Success - Two years after shares hit rock bottom, investors are still grappling with risk. From the Greek debt crisis, political turmoil in the Middle East and the stalled US recovery to Australia's patchwork economy and fears about a carbon tax, it's enough to make investors crawl under the bed along with their savings.

But that would be a mistake.

In the boom years leading up to the global financial crisis, people chased returns and ignored risk. The danger now is that investors are focused on risk based on fear and not the fundamentals of investing.

'People forgot the fundamentals of risk management; by the time the GFC came it was too late. So now there's a re-evaluation of how to manage risk,' says Russell Investments investment specialist Scott Fletcher.

Risk in the markets, as in life, can't be avoided. It is how you manage risk that counts. But first you have to recognise and understand it.

Risk is one half of the risk-and-reward equation. When people start investing they tend to focus exclusively on returns. It often takes a market crash to appreciate that the management of risk, along with time in the market, is the key to healthy long-term returns.

Academics and fund managers define risk as volatility or variations in the price of an asset or market. They measure this using a statistical measure called standard deviation.

Investors tend to see things differently though.

BARGAIN OR DUD?

'Risk for me is not really about volatility but the probability of loss from an investment,' says Greg Canavan, investor and author of the Sound Money, Sound Investments newsletter.

'Traders look at volatility because their decision-making is short term. But if you are a long-term investor like me, I'm more worried about the probability of losing part of my money,' he says.

Academic studies have shown that investors fear a loss far more than they value a gain and that this leads to poor decision-making.

Most people sell when prices fall and buy when they are high, when it would be more rational, and profitable, to do the opposite.

Investor and author of Building Wealth in the Stock Market Colin Nicholson says people need to act in the sharemarket as they do in the supermarket. 'If your favourite brand of coffee is selling for half-price at the local supermarket then you will buy more because it's on special,' he says. 'But in the stock market people don't buy things when they're cheap, they buy when prices are high.

'Sometimes prices are low because they are bad companies; but if they are low because it is the low point in the [economic] cycle then sound businesses may be cheap.' Fletcher agrees volatility is an incomplete measure of an investor's total exposure to risk because it measures only market risk.

'People need to step back and look at risk firstly from the point of view of their overall wealth,' he says.

From the perspective of a long-term investor, especially someone in the wealth accumulation phase, Fletcher says there are three key risks to manage:

* Risk of capital loss, which might erode your basic standard of living up to and through retirement. * Shortfall risk, or the risk of not being able to fund retirement goals. * Inflation risk, the risk of returns not keeping pace with inflation.

Only after addressing these issues should you consider the market-linked investment risks, which grab the headlines.

During and after the financial crisis, investors fled to the safety of cash investments. 'Cash is great for addressing the risk of capital loss but it's terrible for addressing shortfall or inflation risk,' Fletcher says.

Risk, like returns, is magnified by debt. If you borrow to buy shares or property and the value of your asset falls then you can end up owing more than your investment is worth.

Looked at this way, even the family home is potentially a high-risk asset, especially if you pay too much for it in the first place, using borrowed funds without a deposit as a buffer against short-term fall in property prices.

QUANTIFY RISK

Professional fund managers use complex computer modelling to quantify risk but there are simple ways you can measure the degree of risk involved in your investments.

The starting point for evaluating risk is the risk-free return from 10-year government bonds.

These are regarded as risk-free because the federal government guarantees to return your capital in full after a set term. All other assets are measured against this benchmark.

The current yield on 10-year bonds is 5.23 per cent. If you buy investments today that involve more risk than a government bond then you need to earn a return of more than 5.23 per cent or you would be better off in the safety of bonds.

The higher the risk, the higher the potential rewards.

'Investing is not about certainty, it's about probabilities and risk and reward. Buying is about ensuring you are accounting for the risks as best you can,' Canavan says.

When you buy shares, for example, you need to ask if the returns on offer are high enough to compensate for the risk you are taking. This is referred to as the equity risk premium (see graph).

Canavan says people often fall into the trap of thinking risks are increasing because the stock market is falling.

'Perceived risks are increasing, yes, but actual risk is declining because as the price of the market falls, the risk is 'discounted'; it's built in'.

In other words, when prices are falling you get more company profits for your buck, with one caveat.

'Just because the price falls, doesn't mean a stock is cheap. You need to look at price relative to earnings,' Canavan says.

PROTECT YOUR WEALTH

An investor's first line of defence against risk is time, supported by careful asset allocation and diversification. In his book Winning the Loser's Game, US fund manager Charles Ellis likened time to Archimedes' lever.

'Archimedes is often quoted as saying, 'Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand and I can move the Earth.' In investing, that lever is time,' he writes.

If you invest over long periods of time then shares and property tend to produce higher returns on average than corporate bonds and fixed interest.

Warren Buffett famously boasts that his holding time is forever, although he does advocate selling if a stock price races too far ahead of fair value or the company is no longer a good investment. But he won't sell a stock on price alone if it still delivers the return he wants.

Fletcher says asset allocation can be used to protect your overall wealth from the risk of short-term losses.

Asset allocation is the practice of dividing your money between the major asset classes of shares, property, bonds, cash and alternatives such as gold, hedge funds and infrastructure.

The theory is that falls in one asset class will be offset by gains elsewhere in your portfolio. You also need to diversify within asset classes so a downturn in bank stocks, for example, can be offset by higher returns from resource stocks.

However, Fletcher suggests a broader interpretation of asset allocation based on three separate baskets or components. He argues that your first priority should be to protect your basic standard of living with investments in cash and term deposits, the family home and appropriate insurance protection.

Next you should invest in a well-diversified portfolio of growth and defensive assets to produce the overall return you need to maintain your current standard of living through retirement.

Then you can add a smattering of non-core assets such as alternative assets or Asian funds to enhance your living standards in retirement.

'I call it the aspirational part of the portfolio,' Fletcher says.

Careful asset selection can also reduce your risk, even when you are buying high-risk assets such as shares. Returns from large companies with a history of profits and good management do not fluctuate as wildly as small mining exploration companies.

Get to grips with the different types of risk

Some investment risks are specific to a single investment while others affect entire asset classes or market sectors. Here are the risks of which you need to be aware:

* General market risk: The predictably unpredictable ups and downs of asset prices.

* Economic risk: The possibility that a cyclical economic downturn or a crisis such as an oil shock will cause panic selling.

* Interest-rate risk: Affects the cost of borrowing and hence your real rate of return.

* Currency risk: Movements in the exchange rate affect the returns of overseas investments and shares in local exporters.

* Credit risk: The risk of default by a bond issuer or other borrower.

* Liquidity risk: Not being able to access funds when you need them.

* Manager risk: Returns from a managed fund may fall due to bad decisions, an investment style out of step with the economic cycle, or the departure of key personnel.

* Sovereign risk: A country in political turmoil or unable to repay its debts may trigger a fall in financial markets.

* Regulatory risk: The government may change the rules affecting investment returns, for example, superannuation, the resources tax and carbon tax.

* Sector risk: Sometimes a particular market sector will be marked down on bad news.

* Specific risk: If a company suffers bad management decisions, or a freeway is built near your property, then the value of the asset will fall.

What you should expect from shares

The equity risk premium is the compensation you should expect from investing in shares rather than risk-free cash or bonds.

A general rule of thumb is that you should expect a 3 per cent equity risk premium.

Using the current bond yield of 5.23 per cent, you would need a total return (capital gains plus dividends) of 8.2 per cent from shares to make it worth the risk of investing.

In reality, there are times when the perceived risks of shares outweigh the rewards on offer and investors demand a higher risk premium.

Share trader Colin Nicholson says another way to look at the equity risk premium is the difference between the earnings yield of the market and the 10-year bond yield.

Put simply, the earnings yield is the inverse of the price earnings (PE) ratio - the current share price or index value divided by earnings per share. Hence, the earnings yield is 100 divided by the PE ratio.

In January 2009, just before the sharemarket hit rock bottom, the 10-year bond yield was 4.1 per cent and the All Ordinaries Index earnings yield was 12.2 per cent (see above).

At the end of June this year the bond yield was 5.21 per cent and the sharemarket earnings yield was 7.2 per cent.

The equity risk premium was fairly constant until the bear market

began in 2008, when it widened dramatically.

'What this represents is fear,' Nicholson says.

Bond yields fell as bond prices rose - vice versa for shares - and investors fled to the safety of bonds. Things came back to 'normal' in 2010 but the equity risk premium has started to widen again.

'This suggests fear in the market again but less than in 2008 to 2009. There's no compelling reason to buy shares now, or to be away from the market,' Nicholson says.

Clarke carded two-under-par 68 for the second straight day to move to four under at the halfway stage, while 2009 U.S. Open champion Glover shot a solid round of level par for a 36-hole total of 136.

Bright sunshine and gentle breezes made the design of the actual demand of St. George the link a much more attractive on Friday, a day after powerful blasts off-shore had beaten the course.

Round Clarke was a rollercoaster with an eagle and five birdies against a double bogey and three bogeys, but Northern Ireland’s 42 years old, was optimistic about its prospects for the weekend.

“It would mean a lot, but obviously this is only after two rounds,” he replied when asked what a win at the Open in his 20th attempt would mean to him at this late stage of his career.

“There’s an awful lot to be done so yet, and I think the forecast for the weekend is very, very poor, well ahead.

“But the course is playing very, very difficult. If that’s the case, then the tournament is open to a lot of players, and will be.”

Overnight leader Thomas Bjorn on the other hand suffered a shaky start, bogeying three of the first four holes to put two children.

The Dane was recovered with two birdies and yet he had a share of the lead on four under through seven, along with English playing partner Simon Dyson, also in four after seven holes.

But after his opening day fireworks when he shot a five under par 65, English fans Lewis slid down the pecking order after a four-over par 74 that left him in a bass.

However, with the cut expected to come on two more, Lewis, 20, has done enough to ensure their participation this weekend, which is more than can be said of some illustrious names facing elimination.

Among those likely to miss the cut are English world No. 2 Lee Westwood, who never started on his way to a 73 three over par that left him more than four.

Westwood is hoping to win a big scoop was torpedoed effectively on the front nine, where he accumulated a double bogey and three bogeys.

Last year, U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell is also directed to output after an impressive second round. Having started the day at two under, the Northern Irishman could have imagined your chances of making a charge.
