NEWH Leadership Conference 2015—Dallas

Talk about a whirlwind of a trip! The NEWH Leadership Conference in Dallas was such an enlightening and fun event to attend. The lecture series had a fantastic lineup of speakers and we love the networking structure of this event. However, our favorite aspect was meeting a variety of new vendors showcasing hospitality products ranging from luxury boutique to affordable mid scale. We are so excited to utilize some of these products into ongoing and upcoming projects! We can’t recommend this event enough and we highly encourage others in the hospitality industry to become NEWH members as it us such an active and beneficial organization.

HI Connect - Family Suite: Unique Products and Guestroom Directories

In our early research for family hospitality suites we learned about some amazing, innovative products and considered some creative activities that could be promoted in hotel guestroom directories to encourage guest interaction and memorable experiences.

PRODUCTS! PRODUCTS! PRODUCTS!

For those that have been able to walk through our vignette, here's a list of the vendors we utilized in our space for your reference (In no particular order. A big thank you to all of our vendors who have worked so hard throughout this process!):

SVT Woodworking: various casegoods throughout space, including the queen room headboard and closet/nightstand units, credenza and dining table.

Interface: our fun and unique carpet tile!

American Leather: chaise sofa sleeper with pull out queen sized bed.

D'Style: living room end tables and accessories.

Trinity Lighting: various lighting needs throughout space, including bunk room reading lights, queen bedroom headboard sconces, living room floor lamps, and ceiling surface mounts.

Hafele: fulfilled all of our hardware needs +additional, unique lighting throughout the space. Cabinet hardware, cabinet strip lighting, cabinet puck lights, sensor lights--these guys were a tremendous help!

Cosentino: the beautiful quartz counters and kitchenette sink.

Richloom Fabrics: all of our fabric needs for bedding, pillows and draperies.

MDC: the great wallcovering throughout, including that amazing accent wall, and the Tabrasa Idea markerboard paint.

Global Allies: the rolling desk chair

Lodging Kit: created an amazing kitchenette package that would allow guests every convenience of home.

Samsung: why, TV's, of course!

Ren-Wil: the unique and beautiful artwork throughout.

Simmons: mattresses for both the queen guest and kids' bunk room.

Supa Doors: the amazing, space saving, pocket and slider doors.

V-Tech: phone system.

TeleAdapt: the fantastic power/media hubs that integrate beautifully into casegoods with a sleek, compact design that allows guests to connect their electronic devices, such as iPod, laptop, game console, digital camera, HD camcorder or portable DVD player to the in-room TV, and enjoy extra power and an Internet access point all at the same time.

As well, here are some unique products we didn't get a chance to showcase!

TODDLER BACKPACKS

One suggestion we received from the surveys we sent out to hoteliers/friends/family was to have backpacks available for purchase in the gift shop for kids to haul their gear around while hitting the town with parents. Hotels could then brand the bags with the hotel information as part of their advertising via embroidery or screenprinting. And who could resist cute bags like these? The Skip Hop Zoo Pack Toddler backpacks are BPA, Phthalate and PVC free, with an adjustable side pocket for a sippy cup, easy to clean lining, padded straps, and contain an interior write on nametag. The Eco Snooper character bag has a peel off primate for playtime and comes with a story promoting friendship and environmental awareness.

TOYGAROO for your “Toy and Game Box”

It's like Netflix, but for toys! This fast growing company was first funded by Sharktank. Packages of sanitized toys are delivered directly to you that you’ve preselected from their website. For a variety of age groups and many different package options. Plans range from $24.99/mo to $52.99/mo depending on the number of toys checked out and how many at a time. Due to how quickly kids can outgrow toys, these packages have been shown to save parents up to $1825/year. In a hotel setting, this allows hotels to create a program that would increase profits by allowing parents to pack less.

24" Bosch Axxis Washer Dryer Series

The Axxis series is energy and water efficient. It can be stacked and put in any room due to it's compact size. The most exciting part? The dryer is ventless and requires no ducting. Water is condensed and collects in the compartment shown below. Just empty after each use.

Healthy Vending Options through In Room Plus and Unique Local Flair

There are many companies that offer healthier alternatives and the savvy traveler today is more conscious. Our research showed us that guests are looking for healthier alternatives, as well as, a unique local flair to the treats offered in the guestroom minibars. Minibars can be a troublesome aspect. Usually the pricing that has to be set on items (for a profitable hotel program) creates double/triple markups on everyday snacks. However, guests have mentioned that they would be more willing to pay that higher price tag on items that are harder to come by. Guests can go to the gift shop to find a bag of Doritos or a can of Coke, so why not consider partnering up with some locals to “give a taste” of the area? Small batch/crafted sodas, organic produce from local farms/orchards, handcrafted candies, 3.5oz containers of local ice cream/frozen yogurt, roasted nut varieties from the local farmer’s market–items that reflect the uniqueness of your city that locals would tell visitors, “You have to try ____!”

We were selected to design the Family Suite at HI Connect Design at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Prior to design, Judi did quite a bit of research on upcoming trends in Hospitality Design. Here is what we are anticipating for the year ahead:

Hospitality Trends of 2012 by Judi Kieffer, ASID- Kieffer Design Group

Personalized Service: Hotels are expanding custom service options so guests receive personalized attention with issues such as dietary requirements, culturally appropriate in-room amenities and personal advice for offbeat dining or other leisure-time activities.
More DIY Opportunities: To help guests create lasting memories, hotels could offer do-it-yourself experiences, such as cooking classes, gardening opportunities and massage instruction.
Volunteerism: More guests and families are looking for some way to get involved in volunteering in the local community and learning something while doing it- Hotels can offer more creative ways to involve guests and offer fun activities.
Smartphone apps: Hotels are taking advantage of the proliferation of smartphones by offering downloadable custom apps to order room service, drinks, movies or a local map.
The modern travelers have adopted a common trait – they want what they want, when they want it. Hoteliers can find more appropriate ways to be marketable in addressing these requests, making the guest feel ultra special and it shouldn’t be found only in the 5 star hotels.
Amenities that provided added benefits to the guest experience in the past few years are now mandatory. (consider what the current travelers are using in their daily lives- snacks, beverages, items that are used daily and forgotten that can be provided in the guest room without having to call and wait for housekeeping to deliver- it’s a potential money making proposition.)
The hustle and bustle of the modern life has seen travelers looking for hotel experiences that play on the idea of “Escapism. “ Create a fun experience in the hotel for all ages and types of guests. It might mean spa enhancements, or Family Friendly Suite environment, outdoor activities set up with community businesses, etc.
Hospitality experts are predicting that green practices and sustainable elements represent the future of hospitality design.
Today’s trend in hospitality reveals that a more relaxed use of space is the current big thing. Openness is really the trend. People want to see what is happening around them, at the same time choose when to be part of the action.
More Home-Like designed environments tops the list of trends. Entertainment has also taken a step forward by offering technology and comforts one would find at home.
Colors: the magic is in the combination and not just the individual colors.

Molten Orange and taupy gray are our hot picks- with its influence from the earths Red-rock core is becoming a hot new color- its more earthy than the earlier bright orange.

Many new combinations of color groups that reflect more of earths’ natural elements like the blues of oceans and rivers, and the greens of moss, seaweed, all reflecting the increased interest and embrace of sustainability.
Taupes, greys and browns balance off well with these new combinations.

General Guestroom trends:

Platform beds – (no bedskirts - they never look very well and can be high maintenance.)
Multi-use furniture and better use of space
Home like furnishings that are still durable
In-room Amenities – items that are really needed and desired
In room controls of the environment like window coverings, vacancy controls no do not disturb signs, etc
More lighting options so everyone can see! For every task and age of traveler.
Wood flooring with area rugs or carpet tiles for ease of maintenance, comfort, flexibility.

A big thank you to Laura Foreman, Scott Guthormsen, Lori Brock, Sarah Brock, Jessica Roy, Stacey Roy, Johnna Johnson, and Sheli Gartman for their insights on what they would like to see in a family suite. We have incorporated many of these ideas into our suite and appreciate their thoughts on often forgotten special considerations and amenities.

After doing our research on the trends and gathering input from experienced travelers, we came up with a Family Suite Vignette Design Plan:

Traveling can pose challenges for both hoteliers and guests. Often times a Family Suite has been limited in amenities and special considerations. Sensible alternatives are required to enhance the travelers’ experience and expectations in the immediate and future market. From our extensive survey of various hotels owners, parents, teens and business travelers, we have incorporated smart design solutions that bring answers to create The Ultimate Family/Hospitality Suite, increasing a property’s ROI and increased guest approval ratings!

Our Vignette showcases 2 private sleeping quarters adjacent to an open living/ kitchenette area for family and entertaining, utilizing safe, quality, soft close pocket door and cabinet systems. Toys are not spread everywhere, parents don’t need to mute the TV while kids sleep, teens hang out in their ‘personalized’ space. The 400 sf. room offers high-tech amenities, multi-task lighting, materials that are low maintenance, durable, cleanable and ‘green-conscious--it’s efficient, multi-functional, and fun!

The living-space offers a sofa/chaise/sleeper, movable compact end tables, 4 storage ottomans are also chairs, and a kitchen table used for meals, games and laundry. The efficient, fully stocked kitchen offers all amenities for cooking, fridge/freezer for ‘Jacks ice-cream fettish, MW, storable cooktop, a family-friendly ‘Vending Drawer’ with healthy snacks, ear buds (because kids always loose them), hand wipes, diapers (because parents always run out), AND in-room laundry facilities. All things families need and hoteliers can fulfill while increasing profits.

The Queen bedroom offers a 3-in-one desk/bench/rolling-table, locking storage drawers for timeshares, or blankets/pillow programs. Two nightstands offer drawers with overhead illuminated closets that would otherwise be wasted space. The Bunkroom has open cubbies for kid stuff, clothes, bag storage, two individual closets (with writable surface), collapsible playpen, changing pad, and toy bin, and separate TV.

All encouraging guests to linger longer and wanting to return sooner!

What's Your Creative Outlet?

Food inspires me!

Several nights a week, I find myself sifting through my fridge and pantry looking for something that can spark my imagination. I love discovering and creating new recipes letting them unfold during the process, where I can conger up some kind of dish that is full of flavor, texture, shape and color. One that can be constructed through experimentation.

When I explore with food, I don’t always follow a recipe- and that’s when the outcome or end result is like a surprise- I don’t want to always see it “done” . Comparing this to designing living and working environments, my intent is different. I visualize the space as “done”. Like Wayne Ruga says, “ask the space what it wants to be.” Then be open to the answers!

I believe that in the allowing of oneself to create with other forms of art, such as food, in unchartered ways without set boundaries, expands the creative process in all areas. (And in the allowing to falter every now and then also provides an opportunity for forgiveness!)

I think success and purposeful living comes when one can’t see the line between working and playing!

Taking this another step further, what about “sharing food” and the exploration of cooking together with others who enjoy the process- say, a Supper Club with wine paring? It doesn’t have to be elaborate or themed out- just good friends, food, and good times. I personally haven’t participated in one yet but maybe this might be something I will try!

In the meantime, celebrate life, and embrace that which nurtures your creativity!

Boise’s Local Creatives and Second Chance’s 4th Annual Recycled Art Show May 5th!

We have been working hard cleaning out our sample library here at KDG—talk about a long process! We’ve been cutting back to the bare necessities, keeping what we use often and need for tactile feel, while transitioning to a more digital approach for catalogs, brochures and updates.

Amidst our spring cleaning we have met some amazing people here in the Treasure Valley that have been helping us keep these various items out of the landfill by taking them for reuse. A HUGE thank you to them! Take a look at some of their work below and learn where these items are available for sale.

We are also VERY excited to be one of the locations that will be displaying artwork for Second Chance’s 4th Annual Recycled Art Show which will be kicking off during First Thursday on May 5th. Between 3:00 and 9:00 on May 5th, various artwork created from recycled materials will be displayed at various businesses here in the Linen District—Second Chance, Donnie Macs, Renew Appliance, and us! So if you’re going to be in the area for the Modern Hotel’s big, annual event, Modern Art 2011, be sure to sidetrack a block away and come visit us!

We love, love love what Trish Anderson did with this sample book of vinyl wallcovering! How cute are these? She makes everything from wallets to pins to pillows to journal covers…and on and on. Her products can be found at The White Pine in Nampa and Bricolage and Idaho Indie Works in Boise. Be sure to look at all of her other amazing products on her Facebook page!

Be sure to find their booth at the Idaho Green Expo (which is always free!) on May 14th and 15th where they will be selling some of their beautiful crafts. Their coaster sets are a lot of fun! They will also be hosting an interactive project where kids will be able to select from various fabrics to make two dimensional dolls in the image of themselves or who they would like to be. Pictured below is a quilt that volunteers and students of Artisans4Hope created that they are now stitching dolls of themselves onto—this will be on display in the lobby of the Green Expo.

Marie Schutt and Chris Schutt

Marie Schutt, the Development Specialist for Second Chance Building Materials, made these adorable handbags utilizing fabric book samples. She then employed her mother who made the gorgeous flower pins made from fabric book samples. If you’re interested in the bags, they will be available to bid on during the auction being held during Second Chance’s 4th Annual Recycled Art Show (during First Thursday on May 5th) and then available for sale thereafter at Second Chance. The flower pins will be available for sale during the Recycled Art Show event, as well as, at the Idaho Green Expo on May 14th and 15th.

Thanks again to all the artists that have found fabulous uses for the materials from our library and participating with us in our passion for recycling and repurposing materials!

Wabi-Sabi, Feng Shui, and Sacred Vedic Architecture

Q: I have heard about different design terms such as Wabi Sabi, Feng Shui and Sacred Vedic Space or Architecture, what is the real difference between them?

A: Yes, great question. These terms are interior design philosophies that are a set of ideas or theories, relating to a field or activity of that work. They are not a “style” as much as they are a “Lifestyle.”

If you are considering either upgrading your home or office interior, or a specific area to refresh it, consider one of these design philosophies to create a well balanced, refreshing space. There is not a particular right or wrong option, just what ever resonates with you and your overall goals.

Wabi-Sabi

Let’s look at Wabi-Sabi first. (Pronounced “wah-bee sah-bee”). This philosophy was formulated in India, and then made it to China around the 6^th Century and Japan by the 12^th Century. The ideas are fairly simple: take time to appreciate the simple, natural design and the beauty of all things. Objects do not need to be in perfect order, just less cluttered. Beauty is defined by its natural imperfections. Simplify! That’s one word to describe this aesthetic. I think we could all use a little more Wabi- Sabi in all of our environments. Clean up the clutter and provide great energy flow throughout your space.

Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include: asymmetry, asperity, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.

This is my favorite book that is easy to follow, great photos and examples.

I really like how John Stark describes Wabi Sabi; “…celebrating the beauty of imperfection and change.” Here is a link to his article from the Body & Soul magazine.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui, or the art or practice of positioning objects that promote positive energy (chi) flow in a space. All energy has either a negative or positive effect. All things, not just human beings, are made of energy. Therefore, careful balance, the placement of yin and yang objects is important to understand and respond to in both interior, exterior and architecturally as well.

Here are a five ways color can improve the Chi energy of your environment right away.

1. Red symbolizes the energizing element of Fire. It’s the most Yang color in the spectrum. Although red can easily become overwhelming, if not antagonistic. Use Red when you want to lift the energy in your space, keeping an eye on the overall effect. For example, in your home, Red can make a kitchen feel warmer, but since the kitchen already has a lot of Yang Fire because of the stove burners, use Red sparingly in accessories and artwork, rather than on walls and cabinets.
2. Green, the color of new wood is all about growth, vitality and upward movement. Green also creates a warm atmosphere because this is the color that nourishes the Fire element.
3. Black and Dark Blue, representing Water, enhance your communication skills and connection with spirituality and truth. These colors make special sense in an office where it’s important to communicate clearly with associates, vendors and clients.
4. Whites and Light Pastels symbolize Metal, the element of structure and focus. White can make you feel rigid or tightly controlled so if your space is dominated by white, loosen it up with the vitality of the other elements, especially Fire and Wood.
5. Yellows and Earth Tones. Yellow and all its variants are the colors of Earth, the element of stability. Use these colors to calm the atmosphere in your space. The yellow family also helps improve your memory and strengthens your ability to be attentive and alert.

Color can make all the difference in the way you feel in your space. If you’re looking to create a new feeling, I invite you to make some changes in your color scheme and see what happens.

I read an article last week by “The Office Master’ on how to Feng Shui your cubical. I think it applies very well to almost any work space, home or office space - you might like it too.

Sacred Vedic Architecture

Sacred Vedic Architecture is a little bit deeper of a design aesthetic, and the oldest architectural philosophy. It has been practiced in India for over 5000 years and is said that Feng Shui sprung from this tradition. Practitioners design and build living environments in harmony with the physical forces and flow of energy as well as appropriate alignment with the natural surroundings. East and North are the most favorable, which is where the red doors on homes facing East have been popular.

O Ecotextile’s founders Patty Grossman and Leigh Ann Van Dusen have extensively studied textiles and their production. Many of their conclusions are collected in an essay, “Make Your Textile Choices Greener for Your Company, Home and Store,” published on the Sustainable Furniture Council’s website.

The paper is a model for how to evaluate the greenness of all sorts of products. It includes definitions, ecological concerns and impacts on human health while examining the entire life cycle of fabrics. Some are familiar such as Cradle-to-Cradle and Greenguard, while others are less well known. GOTS (The Global Organic Textile Standard), for example, is an emerging effort to clarify the confusion caused by various existing standards.

Holistic thinking – taking into account the economic, environmental and health effects of products – is a process that should apply to all your product selections. Ms. Grossman and Van Dusen have shown us how.”

They’re company blog is also very insightful to understanding the textile industry and the processes that their company strives to avoid—we highly encourage taking a look! We also learned that they have a fabulous price point for such luxurious natural fibers. Ranging from $19-$80 per yard between the various collections. They understand the need to create affordable options and are working on launching a collection called Two Sisters that will range between $19 and $34 per yard.

International Art Properties

Based out of San Francisco and Oakland, CA. IAP's blog just featured a prototype for a retrofit part to add on to IAP planters for a self watering system. We currently have International Art Properties planters at our front entry, and I think we all are looking forward to not having to drag a house up to the front as often…

“We have been working on a new self watering container design. This option will be available in 2011 as an add on to any of our existing designs. This design is a very simple and proven method for self watering, there are no moving components or wick systems that can clog. The green grating that you see is suspended about 3 to 4 inches from the base of the container. The supporting structure is glassed in the wall of the planter to provide a strong and dependable support. The grating is a heavy duty fiberglass industrial quality that far exceeds any load that may be put on it.

The idea is that you first place a screening material over the grating, second fill with soil and plant material. After planting fill the reservoir at the bottom via. the fill tube (white tubing, will be black in the future), moisten soil. The water in the reservoir will evaporate over time and keep the soil moist. If the container is placed outdoors and it either rains or you over fill the excess water will drain via. the overflow.

The prototype you see in the image has been planted and is undergoing testing, so be sure to check back next month for availability.”

RUBBiSH by Minarc

Created by the architecture and design group, Minarc, based out of Santa Monica, CA. A sink, being developed for commercial distribution, that utilizes less than one pound of recycled rubber from old tires. A great idea that will reduce landfill waste, as well as, reduce transportation loads. Can’t wait to see what the final products will look like when reach the distribution market!

Given an R + D Award by Architect Magazine: "The rubber from the tires is melted down and cleansed of debris, and the tiny inherent metal fibers that give a tire its road resistance are then formed into a sheet. This sheet is stretched over a base frame—made of wood, metal, or any other material out of which bathroom furniture can be fashioned—and anchored down by the drain collar. This creates a shallow-sloped surface for water to be siphoned away, but not a clunky profile; in fact, the material used is so minimal that, the manufacturer claims, the sinks use less than one pound of rubber. Two options are available, the most basic being the 1/8-inch-thick sheet of rubber adhered directly to the cabinet underneath. The other is a framed option, in which the sheet of rubber is sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum around the edges. The firm is in the process of developing two standard sizes for commercial distribution: a single sink at 36 inches wide and a double basin measuring 5 feet across."

Arte by Koroseal

Contract and high end residential wallcovering company based out of Zonhoven, Belgium that began in 1981. Creation and production both occur at Arte’s factory that follows Europe’s strictest environmental standards. All of Arte’s products are permanently in stock to ensure quick delivery. Arte uses a variety of materials: paper, woven paper, metallics, non-woven, vinyl, silk, textile, linen, fil-a-fil, chenille, sisal, abaca, bamboo, suede, velour, wood, tree bark, leather, sand grains, etc. A lot of time and effort is put into new collections—sometimes taking up to a year in development.

Fireclay Tile and Sandhill Glass Industries

We just got our February 2011 update from Fireclay tile and learned some interesting news. If you’re familiar with Sandhill Glass Industries you may not yet know they have a new headquarters. With KDG being in Boise, we loved that Sandhill, a recycled glass tile company, was headquartered in our city due to the area being limited on local manufacturers. While it’s great for Sandhill’s growth, we sadly share the news that they have left their Boise headquarters and partnered with another great company—Fireclay Tile. Based in San Jose, California, Fireclay has added Sandhill’s recycled glass tile to their growing product line. The tile will essentially be the same—the formulation has just been tweaked to account for a different material source with new colors and sizes. And like most Fireclay products, the raw material is being sourced locally—this glass only being 20 miles away! Fireclay has just been featured in Sunset magazine for their porcelain recycling efforts and in Architect magazine for their series called Claymonde. They were also featured in NPR’s The Picture Show at the end of 2010. We’ve had experience seeing these products installed and can attest to their quality and beauty. We’re happy to see these great products gaining momentum and attention. Fireclay has a lot of product options but we suggest you check out their Debris series tile line which is handcrafted with over 60% recycled materials and coated with their own lead free glaze which start at $24 per square foot, and the recycled glass tile line which starts at $20 per square foot.

Judi's Handmade Succulent Arrangements for Idaho Conservation League's Event on the River

Judi joined the Idaho Conservation League and offered to create arrangements for their Event on the River that was held on September 11th, 2010. Below, Judi shares her process and how to make one of your own! They turned out gorgeous!

I was inspired to work with as many natural ‘found objects’ as I could to create sustainable arrangements that could be taken home by attendees and that could be enjoyed for an extended period of time. So on my trips up to the mountains this late summer, I collected boxes of old tree limbs, stumps, and rocks. And the more gnarly and mossy they were the more character they would lend to the end result. Each creation is unique and lends a different feeling and style all its own, as it is in nature. You are not going to find any element that is the same, just like people--we are, after all, beautiful creations in ourselves and each of us offer very unique and powerful energy.

How to Create Your Own Organic Succulent Arrangement

1. Start by collecting a wide variety of gnarly wood, limbs, branches rocks, etc. Look for those with moss or unique elements that can add interest and uniqueness. Varying lengths and widths, thicknesses come in handy.

2. Lay them out on a collection table to sift through and pick from--a little helper is always nice!

3. Decide where you want to display this so that you can select the right sizes and how long or large you want it to be. Start by taking a few different types of branches, shapes, some mossy some not. It is best to have the largest one on the base and add other pieces to it. You will find that they naturally start working together, some curve of one holds the curve of another and begins to take a shape all its own. The important thing to remember is not to over analyze! It’s a puzzle but let it evolve- no over-thinking this allowed!

4. Also – look to create areas that naturally create ‘space’ or crevices for dirt to be filled to hold your succulents or herbs. Hot glue your pieces of wood together in numerous locations and make sure its sturdy and secure. Sometimes a little rustic wire is a nice element to do this and adds to the design as well. Below I am holding a little piece of wood to create more of a crevice.

5. In the first photo below I have put some pieces together and you can see some areas with dirt added into the crevices. You might even get lucky to find a piece of wood that has a hole in it already like this what's shown in the second photo below. Fill them up with dirt also. It doesn’t take much dirt or space for the succulents to grow, but give it as much as possible to expand.

Below shows most of the spaces with dirt ready for plants.

6. Take the succulent plants apart and put together a combination of colored plants, shapes, and sizes to give most interest. Put them into the dirt with the roots imbedded as deep as possible and pack the dirt around the plant. Sometimes your dirt will be all over the wood..just blow it away – but don’t worry about it yet. It will naturally dry and can be cleaned up pretty nicely.

The photo below shows the arrangement filled with plants and dirt.

7. If there are areas where you hot glued the wood together, and it is showing, just take some moss and hot glue that over it to hide the spot making it look very natural looking.

8. Take a water spray bottle and spritz the plants and get the dirt /potting soil wet. Press the base of the plant into the soil as compact as you can…add more soil into the area to make sure root system is secured. Again, moss is a very helpful agent- hot glue some moss on to the wood to hole the dirt in place if needed.

9. You may choose to add more rustic elements like little rocks, spiky twigs with or without leaves, and rustic wire is also helpful to hold the piece together better if needed.

I used a combination of various succulents—Aeonium echeveria, Stonecrop, Trailing Ice, and Chicks and Hens.

Add gnarly pieces of wood and different mosses for contrast.

I really liked the use of the spiky twigs and dead limb branches to give more character and abstract nature to this piece.

Sometimes you can find one whole piece of wood and add to it.

And many times less is more and you can create a flower vase out of one piece of wood too! Here I just drilled out holes in the log, about ½” thick, and 1” or so deep. Dropped a little hot glue in the base of each hole to hold water. Then added moss around the hole to secure a flower stem. You can use this for any kind of flower and change it out. This is truly rustic elegance with orchids!

You can also find rocks with holes in them already that can hold water on their own and make your own natural vase.

And one last fun little design that I just had to create. The RIGHT way to build this Cairn is to actually get them to stand up on their own through a thoughtful meditative process ..but since they had to get transported, I built it, and then just hot glued them together. But try to hide the glue so it doesn’t show! Tricky! The inscription says, “Show your Cairn for the environment”…ICL Event on the River 2010 (ha ha..pretty cute huh!?).

Pedaling Revolution! A Transformation of American Cities

" 'I'm a husband, I'm a ____, I'm a motorist...'--Who does that?"--Jeff Mapes discussing the pride of cyclists and how when asked to describe themselves being a cyclist will enter the discussion.

On Thursday, September 16th, Boise Bicycle Project hosted their first Bike Talk at the Linen Building with Portland political journalist and author of Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists are Changing American Cities, Jeff Mapes. The first of (hopefully) a continuing series, I am looking forward to what's to come.

Infused with humor, inspiring images, and valuable discussion, I really enjoyed the event. The only downside--I forgot my camera! So please forgive the lack of event images. Many cyclists in the Boise community believe we could become the next cyclist mecca, and as an amateur bike commuter and designer, I am fascinated by the ideas that could transform Boise's built environment.

Jeff Mapes discussed his progress into becoming one of Portland's bike commuters--now 7% of the population! On his first night ride home from work it was lightly raining (which seemed to be the case in many of his stories). Crossing the Hawthorne bridge, he could see the Willamette River's waters flowing, stars visible in the sky, a hawk flying above him--as a bus started coming across the bridge, he thought with pity how all those on the bus were missing this connection to the beauty surrounding them. As the bus started going past he looked at the people's faces and noticed a mirrored expression--pity towards the cyclist biking home in the rain. Let's face it, not everyone wants to commute by bike but the cyclist population is growing and America's cities are transforming to create a safer environment for everyone: motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The five reasons cycling would be good in America, according to Jeff Mapes:

40% of trips are 2 miles or less
Adult obesity rate is now above 30%
Burning carbohydrates, not hydrocarbons
Improving livability
Providing choices

For his book, Jeff Mapes traveled across the United States and internationally studying cycling and how it is integrated in various cities. In Utrecht, Holland, pictures were shown of lines of children cycling home from school as there are no school buses. In Copenhagen, the City Hall has a counter for the number of cyclists that go by each morning. By 8:49 am the day Jeff Mapes was there, 2,503 cyclists had gone by. NYC's traffic commissioner, Janette Sadik-Kahn, has integrated a bike lane on Broadway and shut down a section of Times Square for pedestrians/cyclists.

Boise, with the unfortunate amount of cyclist deaths this summer, has recently released new bike safety laws. To view, click here. One question to Jeff Mapes was how to begin with bringing awareness to cyclists and improving conditions. In Portland, there is a Political Leaders Ride--including the state highway department--where local cyclists take the elected officials and bureaucrats on a bike ride around the city to better explain problem areas and understand changes needed to be made. Who's involved in the movement towards the transformation? Bureaucrats, Elected Officials, and of course, Grassroots. Otherwise known as his Carbon Frame Triangle--as shown by my illustration...

BITAC Purchasing & Design East 2010

Judi and Tara spent part of last month at BITAC's Purchasing & Design East 2010 in Florida. BITAC is much different than your typical trade shows, summits or conferences. Everything is arranged to make valuable contacts and to build relationships with others in the hospitality and lodging industry--one on one meetings between buyers/vendors, coordinated meals to continue the discussion, panel discussions and presentations, and all hosted in one location to allow continued communication between participants.

This year, BITAC East was hosted at Disneyworld's Grand Floridian Resort. Judi and Tara both had a great time and made a lot of valuable contacts. If you've been considering attending BITAC--perhaps the one in Las Vegas coming up?--we'd love to share our experience!

There were a lot of great vendors and here are a couple that we were very impressed with!

Simmons Hospitality Group--while Simmons has been around for over 135 years we were impressed with their new Simmons Beautyrest mattress. Features Pocketed Coil springs made of recycled steel--and best of all--features the EverNU Top. EverNU is a zip off top that makes it possible to salvage the rest of the mattress frame for reuse (available for the Beautyrest Black collection and select traditional Beautyrest mattresses). The polyurethane foams used are CertiPUR-US certified which means they are low VOC and free of CFCs. They are also manufactured without PBDE flame retardants, lead, mercury, and prohibited phthalates. The wood used in the EnduroTECH foundation is certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. As well, we appreciate Simmon's zero-waste policy and initiative to reduce their waste and impact.

Off the topic of materiality but could eventually be developed into a product and too cool not to show. Done by a designer who does mostly art installations. Beautiful Transitions

Doorways can help with the wayfinding of a space and can create stunning effects in a room. Doors and the transition space between rooms and the interior/exterior are too often overlooked. Interface specializes in 100% solution dyed nylon carpet tiles with recycled content and they have a "Cool Carpet" program which means they purchase carbon offsets to make zero emissions carpet. Interface has declared Mission Zero with seven steps: zero waste, benign emissions, renewable energy, create closed loop processes and products, resource efficient transportation, sensitivity hookup, and redesign commerce. Interface is based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

Lightwave Laser is based out of California. These wood laser cut panels are comprised of about 80% MDF that is FSC, no added formaldehyde and 100% recycled content, as well as, a wood veneer (the Wenge, Fir and Mahogany colored veneers are from certified sustainable sources and the maple and chery are domestically grown but not certified). Low VOC clear coatings are applied. Panel sizes are up to 4'x8' and range from $14 to $40 per square foot depending on thickness and matial. Laser cutting charges only are $22-$39 per square foot.

Ultratouch Recycled Denim Insulation is manufactured in Chandler, Arizona. Comprised of 85% recycled denim, boron (provides pest, mold and mildew resisitance and makes fire retardant) and Co-polyolefin binder (textile waste that adds tensile strength so won't slump). Bentley Prince Street specializes in 100% solution dyed nylon carpet tiles. They are dedicated to Mission Zero by 2020 which is the same as Interface with a seven step program. They are also a part of the "Cool Carpet" program and are headquartered out of California.

Chemetal & Treefrog Partnership - Announced at NeoCon - Chemetal and Treefrog have partnered to release a wall panel system for retail/airports/lobbies/sports stadiums. You can select from Chemetal's 100 metal designs and Treefrog's 50 wood veneer laminates. There are three reveal options: Open, Captured, and Shadowline in satin, black, gold, and bronze finishes. The panels can be up to 4'x10' with thicknesses of 5/16" or 3/8". 5 Treefrog veneers available as FSC certified and others available upon custom order.

Merida Rugs -The photo to the left shows one from their wool Sweater Collection. Merida partnered with The Natural Step to educate employees on sustainability, with SaveThatStuff to improve their facility goals, Pure Strategies to do a life cycle analysis, Habitat for Humanity and Heading Home to donate leftover materials, and leftover yarn to a local knitting group next to their Fall River facility that makes goods for the homeless. They are also a part of 1% for the Planet and Sustainable Business Leader Program.

Vallahan Papers is a studio in Lincoln, Nebraska where they make handpainted wallcovering and it is manufactured in the US. It can be used in commercial and residential applications. A variety of textures and colors are available with the option for custom work. The papers are mostly in the style of recreating a metal look.

Juxtaform is manufactured and headquartered in Arizona. They have stretched fabric panels for ceilings, wall dividers, screens, etc. They offer one fabric option called Eco-White that is 90% recycled polyester/10% lycra. Other colors available in their standard polyester/lycra blend with various shapes and sizes available. Screen printing logos is another option. This is perfect for disguising unwanted views and creating layered visual interest.

Trend Green Fabric is 100% post consumer recycled from plastic bottles. The water from the dying process is used later in the process for cooling to recycle the water used in production. The facilities for yarn production, textile production, and finishing are located near one another to reduce the need for transportation. These fabrics are inherently flame retardant and "meet or exceed 30,000 double rubs for upholstery. Nano-tex is used to make stain resistant. Durablock can be specified for an enhanced liquid barrier. BioAm is used for anti-microbial and fabrics treated with this will biodegrade in approximately 5 years.

Big Ass Fans is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company that specializes in HVLS (high volume/low speed) fans. They are meant for large scale commercial/industrial projects - such as fans that can be up to 24' in diameter. They are developed through wind tunnel testing, fluid dynamics, finite element analysis and 100+ years in fan design experience. These fans utilize more blades and slower operating speeds than typical fans--makes more expensive but also makes more efficient and durable. Their facilities are rated LEED Gold, reduced water in 2009 by 17,000 gallons through a water conservation program, reused 15,000 lbs of scraps through a waste reduction program, purchase 50% green energy and 90% printed materials on FSC paper with soy inks.

Prefabrication is the practice of assembling components of a structure in a factory or other manufacturing site, and transporting complete assemblies or sub-assemblies to the construction site where the structure is to be located.

Prefab has come a long way as far as design and sustainability is concerned. Ready-built or large preconstructed homes have been available in multiple forms since at least the mid-1800's. Ranging in style from cottages and mobile homes to architects' visions. Prefabricated homes stand poised to move house construction into a greener future, according to some members of the building industry. More history...

There are several OUTSTANDING architects, designers, and companies out there that are working towards improving prefab and our environment at the same time. Our favorite company that excels in both design and sustainablity is LivingHomes. This company is lead by Steve Glenn, who works with leading architects to create lines of homes that feature modern form and functionality and an unprecedented level of healthy/sustainable materials and energy systems. LivingHomes worked with Ray Kappe, FAIA to design the first residence in the United States to earn LEED Platinum, which is the highest level of certification from USGBC.

LivingHomes focuses on what they call the Six Degrees of Sustainability including: energy, water, waste, emissions, carbon, and ignorance. One very intriguing 'degree' of sustainability with this company is the 'waste' impact. The company has laid out a four-step process to reduce waste. In fact, these processes allow LivingHomes to achieve about a 2% waste level — in other words, 98% of the construction products are reused, recycled or otherwise diverted from landfills. Melissa Hincha-Ownby of 1800recycling.com wrote this article on their ideals.

Step one of the four-step zero waste goal is the deconstruction process. If the prospective home site has a building currently on it, LivingHomes works with The ReUse People to deconstruct the building and separate the reusable and recyclable goods. The ReUse People is a part of The ReUse Institute, and is dedicated to helping divert demolition and deconstruction materials from local landfills.

The second step is the use of locally sourced, recycled or reclaimed materials. LivingHomes made in the United States are manufactured in California, and regionally sourced materials are used when available.

Step three ensures that the process that goes into making the home can be reversed so that the product can be deconstructed and reused at the end of its life.

The final step in the process is what is called moveable millwork. In other words, you can move the walls around in your home during the design phase without the need for new building materials.

Nightsands today have evolved into not only a design element but also to serve a purpose. These new designs are now considered side tables for other uses than the bedroom. Oh My Goodness! This wallcovering is so fabulous you could literally use it as artwork if you so desire...

Nama Rococo wallcoverings are all hand-painted and hand-screened on acid-free French Paper. Experiencing writer’s block? Not sure what to paint? Bored?

Architecture for Humanity and the Abundance Project

Boise has a local Architecture for Humanity chapter and would love to get more people involved in the group. It is a fairly new group with a couple projects under its belt. If you've been by the Boise Bicycle Project, you would have seen a project that the AFH chapter and BBP teamed up on re-utilizing some of BBP's old bikes to create a new bike rack.

Currently, AFH is partnering with the Abundance Project and Kim Metez. The Abundance Project takes the extra food from your garden and partners with local farmers to provide food for the local refugee population. AFH is in the process of putting together designs for the bins that will be used at the drop off locations. The design incorporates the old blue recycle bins as drawers and will be incorporated into a wood structure from re-salvaged/donated materials. The next steps to come will be a painting party to put the Abundance Project's logo on the bins and prototype building. These prototypes will then be tested to determine a final design.

Grow a Lot, Share a Little

What started out as a book club assignment has turned into a mission to help feed local refugee families with the bounty that grows in Boise backyards.

After reading What is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng by Dave Eggers, Boise real estate agent Kim Metez was inspired. Working to form a community project with other agents in her real estate office, she started asking for donations from people’s gardens that she could pass along to the International Rescue Committee, where for the last two years she has volunteered by helping a Burmese family adapt to their new life.

From the first boxes full of food that arrived on her doorstep in July 2009, donations steadily grew. The freshly grown produce was taken to the IRC office, where it was distributed to refugees as they came in for help with learning English, finding work, scheduling doctor appointments, reading bus maps and trying to function in an United States city.

As the 2010 growing season approaches, Metez is gearing up for another summer of sharing. In addition to donations of fresh fruits and vegetables from citizen gardens, she is looking for volunteers who can help with grant writing as well as master gardeners and master composters.
