Once again, Mother Nature reminds us how fragile life is. With one calamitous sweep of wind and rain, the world’s deadliest typhoon of 2011 hit land on the thriving cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro in mid-December, striking at the dead of night.

At its wake, Typhoon Sendong caused the death of 1,500 while over 500 are still missing.   It cleared and buried 42,000 homes, leaving nearly 55,000 individuals from more than 5,500 families in evacuation centers. Homeless and desolate, victims of Sendong now rely on the warmth of a kind hug and the reassurance of a helping hand.

Known for its bayanihan spirit, feisty Filipinos were up and ready to provide food and water, basic necessities and medicine.   As with Typhoon Ondoy in 2009, everyone was eager to do their own little bit to help.

Members of Advertising Suppliers Association of the Philippines, along with friends from the United Print Media Group, the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas and the Philippine Association of National Advertisers, as well as the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of the Philippines, the Independent Blocktimers Association and the Technical Group for Events and Entertainment of the Philippines join forces to create one meaningful fund-raiser to sustain Sendong relief efforts.

This powerhouse group of the country’s advertising industry is Cause I’m Sendong All My Love for You, so to speak, in a variety show and concert on January 28 at the Quezon City Memorial Circle. The rain never stopped yesterday. The whole day is like going to the bathroom and taking a shower. The city landscape is gray. The roads are like a glass window. For some, it is a gloomy day. Another wet and cold day aggravated by the terrible metro traffic.

On the other side, the rain is a blessing. A continuous rain is a continuous blessing of life. Rain cleans the air of pollution and increase the level of oxygen.

In one part of the city, this is what took place in Megatrade. A Blessing was opened the MegaBalikbayan OFW Expo – an event promoting entrepreneurship and business to OFWs and Balikbayan.

The event has more than 250 exhibitors. The exhibitors are showcasing different business opportunities to the OFW and Balikbayan. This is a contrast to what is happening in the lower floors of the venue where a Christmas Sale is going on.

DESPITE the availability of assistance programs and light payment or investment schemes, only two overseas Filipino worker (OFW) households out of 10 choose to invest or save the remittances they regularly receive.

Based on a study made by The Nielsen Co., only around 17 percent of households said remittances go to savings and investments, while a whopping 96 percent of OFW households spend it on basic needs, such as food, utilities, bills, rent and education.

This data is very alarming and it only makes the task compelling in creating avenues for OFW and Balikbayan to be educated in entrepreneurship and wise investment.

In 2010 OFWs sent a total of $18.7 billion worth of remittances. If a large chunk of this remittance is invested into creating business a lot of people will have jobs and the trend of going abroad just to earn for a living will be abated.

This is the reason why Mega Balikbayan OFW Expo, an eight year event advocating entrepreneurship and investment directed at OFWs and Balikbayan continue to grow and reach-out this segment of the society.

Business has a multiplier effect that can make the nation progressive. The OFWs and Balikbayan have the income to enter in a business provided they are guided and educated there is no reason they cannot be successful in this field.

Government figures showed that for the January-to-June period, OFWs already sent $11.3 billion worth of remittances, despite the global crises, which initially was expected to cut remittances in 2011.

This figure if only we can harness has a very promising potential in stimulating our economy to unprecedented growth.

Tourism Congress 2

Another tourism congress will be held this coming November 10, 2011 at the PICC. The goal is to rectify what was wrong in the first tourism congress and to elect a new leadership in the private sector.

Last time around, the result created disunity and stalled what could have been positive action plans to uplift our tourism industry using the new tourism law.

It is with high hopes that this second Tourism Congress will create unity and move forward the industry.

As in any other body, there are a lot of groups and individuals who are trying to grab a seat or voice in the congress just to satisfy their self interest and not the industry. This is what we have to guard and be vigilant about.

Our tourism is one of the sunshine industries if only all the members of the sector will keep this in mind that we first serve our country before our interest.
