Ensuring a free effusion of creativity and fantasy from children's world? Or give them, in a conscious way, "hidden educators", capable tools to give them in between the lines behavioral guidance provided by the adults who have forgotten the mocking spirit and joy they might have known during their childhood? (Giani Rodari).

Benjamin is a deep thinker who ran away from the Nazis during the WWII. His book, Children's literature , is available online in Spanish and shows a critical analysis of children's books.He tries to answer the question about what adults want to "transmit" to the kids through literature. He also studies the evolution of toys and their role during childhood.There's lots to read and comprehend on his writing that might help us understand how we got where we are.

Su libro, LA-LITERATURA-INFANTIL , está disponible online en español y muestra un análisis crítico sobre los libros infantiles. A su vez, realiza un estudio sobre la evolución del juguete y su rol durante la infancia. Hay mucho para leer y comprender de su obra que puede ayudarnos a entender cómo llegamos hoy a donde estamos.

Looking up was never this fast!/ Buscar palabras en el diccionario nunca fue tan rápido

Have you ever thought about the boredom that looking up words in the dictionary is to our students? For these 21^st.Century learners, it doesn’t make much sense to use a dictionary, while they could be translating a whole document with the help of Google translator. Even though online translators are a useful tool to translate, we the Teachers know that they are not the best tool for our students. Online translators translate without “paying attention” to meaning and the program does not manage to express what we want to say.

On the search for ESL students suitable available resources online, we have come to meet WORDSMYTH

It’s a great tool where you could create your own glossary looking up as many English words as you would like. Once the words are found, several definitions are shown to the student and he/she is able to choose the one that makes more sense to the context where you found the word. Finally, once you’ve decided on definitions you can click on “next” and your personalized glossary will be ready. A plus of the site is that you could also listen to the each word pronunciation! ¿Alguna vez pensaron que aburrido es para nuestros estudiantes buscar palabras en el diccionario? Para estos aprendices del Siglo XXI, no tiene mucho sentido utilizar un diccionario, debido a que directamente pueden traducir documentos enteros en Google. Si bien los traductores online son una herramienta valida a la hora de traducir, los docentes bien sabemos que no son lo mejor para nuestros estudiantes. Ofrecen traducciones “al pie de la letra” y el programa no siempre logra expresar lo que queremos decir.

En la búsqueda por los recursos disponibles en la web más adecuados para aprender Inglés como segunda lengua encontramos con WORDSMYTH

Aquí se puede generar un glosario con todas las palabras en inglés que queramos. Una vez encontradas las palabras, aparecen una serie de definiciones para cada palabra buscada, y el estudiante debe elegir la definición que es más adecuada para el contexto donde la palabra se encuentra inmersa. Luego de que se eligen las definiciones más adecuadas, se hace click en “next”, y aparece el glosario personalizado. ¡Además se puede escuchar la pronunciación de cada una de las palabras elegidas! Es una excelente herramienta; ¡qué la disfruten!

Asimov's vision of our knowledge society 23 years ago does not stop amazing us: "enormous libraries connected to your computer where anyone can ask any questions, in your own home, at you own speed, at your own direction, in your own time....everyone will enjoy learning."

He even mentions the posibility of OLPC Program...who else could've forseen it? Asimov. Could the world actually supply with clean water or computers for everyone? As he said: "Perhaps not at the very start...But you try for it...you might get it on the long run....anyone, anywhere can learn by himself" Hopefully, the future will prove that he was right about the clean water, too...

Penzu is a digital journal that allows you to share your journal entries with your students, as well as have them sharing with you. If you would like to try it, make sure you have an email account with space enough to receive emails from all your students.
We recommend you to open a new account separately from your personal one. Personally, we’ve been using it for the last two years and its given us great results. The students feel motivated since it allows them to save and see their progress in their writing pieces throughout the course.

Penzu es una herramienta digital que te permite compartir los registros que hagas en tu diario con tus estudiantes, así como también que ellos compartan contigo. Si te gustaría probarlo, asegúrate de que tienes una cuenta de email que tenga suficientes espacio para recibir emails de todos tus alumnos. Les recomendamos crear una cuenta separada de la que utilicen para su correo personal. Personalmente, la hemos utilizado en estos últimos dos años y ha venido dando buenos resultados. A los estudiantes les motiva debido a que les permite ver su progreso y archivar todas las tareas escritas que han realizado a través del curso.

Meirieu's collection is amazingly rich, and everything I've read so far has been great. On his book, Frankestein educator, he begins a journey through the story of this character, developing an education analysis that will make us reflect. This is an extract from his book that seem the right one to publish, due to the times we are going through: " Education is full of <calamities> because it's an unpredictable adventure in which a person is built, an adventure that nobody can program" (Meirieu, 1998:64)

La obra de Meirieu es infinitamente rica, hasta ahora todo lo que he leído no tiene desperdicio. En su libro “Frankestein educador,” nos pasea a través de la historia de este personaje, por un análisis de la educación que nos hará reflexionar. Les dejo una cita de su libro que me pareció adecuada para los tiempos que corren: “La educación está llena de <calamidades> porque es una aventura imprevisible en la que se construye una persona, una aventura que nadie puede programar” (Meirieu, 1998:64)

Teaching body parts to elementary students/ Enseñando las partes del cuerpo a estudiantes de primaria

If you are teaching your kids to learn the parts of the body, you might be willing to teach the famous chant: "Head, and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes!" However, if you would like to work with the computers, this digital resource might be helpful. Click on the link and explore the slides. The beginning is for teachers planning, but as of page 11 it's student centered. You can move the mouse through the different body parts and they will light up in green. Also, it asks the kids to start imitating the character on what he does (kind of a digital "Simon says") It will be fun...

Si están enseñando a sus chicos una unidad sobre las partes del cuerpo, probablemente cantaran el famoso: "Head, and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes!" Pero si están dispuestos a trabajar con las computadoras, este recurso digital podría serles de utilidad. Hagan click en el link y exploren las diapositivas. Al comienzo está orientado para docentes, pero a partir de la página 11 aparecen las actividades para los estudiantes. Si arrastran el mouse por las distintas partes del cuerpo, se van ir prendiendo de verde, para mostrar a que parte corresponden las palabras. A su vez, les pide a los chicos que imiten al personaje en lo que va haciendo (algo así como un “Simon dice” digital). ¡Van a ver que será divertido!

Have you been wondering what things will no longer be part of the education process in the nearby future? Take a guess…Pencils? Notebooks? Or even Teachers???/ ¿Se han preguntado qué cosas ya no serán parte de los procesos de educación en el futuro próximo? Adivinen… ¿Los lápices? ¿Las gomas? ¿Los cuadernos? ¿O incluso los profesores?

Dan Elloway posted an article in which he expresses the things he thinks won’t be utilized by educators and schools by the year 2020. From the items he presented, the ones that called our attention were: / Dan Elloway publicó un artículo en el cual cuenta que cosas cree que ya no serán de utilidad para los educadores y las escuelas en el año 2020. De todos los puntos que presentó, estos son los que llamaron nuestra atención:

Homework/ Las tareas domiciliarias

He believes that since *blended learning is being increasing tremendously; homework will be just an extension of classroom tasks in a different and more natural way. Assignments will be assigned with deadlines, and students will be free to choose what they prefer to do in class or at home based on their own needs.

I find it fair and interesting. It seems that kids might be more motivated, since they will have a certain degree on their learning decision making process. / El entiende que debido a que el “ blended learning” está aumentando a pasos gigantescos, las tareas domiciliarias serán tan solo una extensión de lo que ocurre en las tareas en el aula que se dará naturalmente. Se asignarán tareas con fechas de entrega, y los estudiantes serán libres de elegir cuales prefieren realizar en clase y cuales en sus casas, basándose en sus propias necesidades.

Creo que será justo e interesante. A mi parecer, los chicos estarán más motivados debido a que tendrán cierto grado de decisión dentro de la toma de decisiones en su propio proceso de aprendizaje.

The fear of failure/ El miedo al fracaso.

Our teaching methodologies are walking towards individual learning plans and formative assessments, where the key focus is on the learning process rather than the students’ mistakes from a non-constructive critique perspective. The fear of failing to answer the correct answers will disappear eventually since students will understand the value of making mistakes as a pivotal element on their learning process. /

Nuestras prácticas docentes están volcándose hacia planes individuales de aprendizaje y evaluaciones formativas, las cuales tienen como objetivo principal el proceso de aprendizaje, y no se focalizan en los errores de los estudiantes desde una perspectiva crítica no constructiva. El miedo a fracasar al no responder las respuestas correctas desaparecerá eventualmente, debido a que los estudiantes comprenderán el valor de cometer errores como un elemento clave en su proceso de aprendizaje.

Paper (and text books)/ El Papel ( y los libros de texto)

According to Elloway, paper won’t disappear completely but it won’t be the no.1 work tool anymore.

Think of how much paper we would be saving if we shared most of our work online and have our students hand in their assignments digitally! Not to count other advantages such as not storing papers physically or making the possibility of losing students papers disappear! Personally, we have tried this alternative throughout these past two years and it works very well!

Según Elloway, el papel no desaparecerá del todo, pero ya no será la herramienta de trabajo número 1. ¡Piensen en cuanto papel podríamos ahorrarnos si compartiéramos la mayoría de nuestro trabajo en la web y si lográramos que nuestros estudiantes entreguen sus tareas en formato digital! Sin contar las otras ventajas tales como el no tener que guardar papeles físicamente, o eliminar de una vez por todas la posibilidad de perder los trabajos de nuestros estudiantes! Personalmente, hemos probado esta alternativa en últimos dos años y funciona muy bien!

*blended learning = traditional classroom learning and virtual learning combined= aprendizaje en el aula y aprendizaje virtual combinados.

We all know the value of using flashcards when engaging the learning process of our students. It allows for reinforcement of visual and oral, combining different senses in knowledge acquisition.
     Todos conocemos el valor de utilizar "flashcards" para lograr involucrar a nuestros alumnos en el proceso de aprendizaje. El uso de las mismas nos permite lograr un refuerzo visual y oral combinando los sentidos en la adquisición de conocimiento.
The website above is an excellent internet tool for you to find content already made by other teachers, or to make your own online flashcards.Read the instructional guide and you can create a link so that your students can access from home for further review/study the aimed vocabulary.
El link anterior es un recurso excelente para encontar contenidos realizados por otros docentes, o para realizar vuestras propias tarjetas. Lean las instrucciones y podrán crear un link para que sus estudiantes accedan desde sus casas y pueden repasar y estudiar el vocabulario específico.

The increasing integration of web 2.0 tools into our teaching practice is opening new doors for learning to keep on going outside the classroom. The knowledge society is taking over teaching and learning. As 21^st century teachers, we need to be ready to explore new tools that will enhance lesson plans and engage students into learning.

El auge de la integración de herramientas 2.0 en nuestra práctica docente esta abriéndole las puertas al aprendizaje para continuar ocurriendo fuera del aula. La sociedad del conocimiento se está apoderando de los procesos de aprendizaje y enseñanza. Y como docentes del siglo XXI, debemos estar listos para explorar nuevas herramientas que nos ayuden a mejorar nuestra planificación y a involucrar a nuestros alumnos en su aprendizaje.

With this in mind, during this semester my students and I have been collaboratively working on a wiki. What is a wiki? It's a “website” that allows you to create content in collaboration with others. Through this tool my students shared book reports and created appealing mystery stories. They were also able to discuss each other's stories and engage on digital reading and writing. It's been a terrific experience for all of us! Some of my kids would check on the site during the weekends for reading for pleasure...homework became fun!

Con este objetivo, durante este semestre mis estudiantes y yo hemos estado trabajando colaborativamente en una wiki. ¿Qué es una wiki? Es un “sitio web” que te permite crear contenidos en colaboración con otros. A través de esta herramienta, mis estudiantes compartieron fichas de libros y crearon historias de misterio muy atrapantes. A su vez, discutieron las historias de unos y otros, y se embarcaron en la lectura y escritura digital. ¡Ha sido una experiencia buenísima para todos nosotros! Algunos de mis chicos visitaban el sitio web durante los fines de semana para leer los cuentos sólo por placer….las tareas domiciliarias pasaron a ser sinónimo de diversión!

Strategies for Creating and Maintaining a Safe Space:

Use each other's names. Using a person's name when you respond to his/her postings creates a friendly online tone.
Read questions and conversational postings carefully to avoid unnecessary confusion.
Compliment your peers when they post strong responses or contribute original ideas to the conversation.
Ask questions. If anything is unclear or you want further information or insight on a topic, just ask. If you have a question, there are probably other members of the group who are confused and need further clarification as well.
Be considerate. Remember that your peers cannot see your body language or hear your tone of voice, so you need to keep your language direct and respectful.
Avoid slang, jargon, and sarcasm.
Listen to all the ideas presented. Remember there is no right or wrong in a discussion. A variety of perspectives add depth.
Stay open-minded.
Respond instead of reacting. Do not write a response if you are angry or upset. Instead, wait until you have had time to calm down and collect your thoughts.
Really read your peers responses. Avoid skimming. Respect the time your peers have spent articulating their thoughts by reading carefully and thoughtfully.
Reread your messages before sending them to ensure that your ideas are clearly communicated and supported.
Critique the content, not the person.
Do not present your personal opinions as fact. Back up your ideas with information to strengthen your statements.
Courteously answer all questions addressed directly to you.
Make "I" statements when respectfully disagreeing. Sharing an opposing opinion or idea is an important part of discussion, but it needs to be presented in constructive manner that encourages further discussion.
Do not use all caps when writing. It is interpreted as yelling.
Avoid emotional punctuation, like exclamation points, unless you are complimenting an idea shared.

Word Play and Multiple Recognition Strategies

This is a new site for me that I have found "by accident." I was impressed with the (w)holistic way that it really analyzes any word you may choose from so many different perspectives. I believe this gives the learner, and teacher, a real advantage when trying to explain the meaning of a word. This program, while it does cost some money, seems like it may be worth the investment. It will show the student all the synonyms, antonyms, ways to use it in different parts of speech, and all with a graphic organizer that can be changed to specific settings. I have not tried it yet, but it also will accomadate other languages, Spanish included!
As a teacher, and human being, I am upset that I even think about spending my own money to purchase this software. As an advocate for better learning and better tools for my students, I think it may be worth it.
Let me know your thoughts and/or experiences in this realm of thinking, or with the soft ware itself.

Exploring the web we found out about this approach that seems to be what we are currently attempting to do in our classrooms.

Universal Design for Learning is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn.

El Diseño Universal de aprendizaje consiste en una serie de principios para desarrollar un curriculum que otorgue a todos los individuos las mismas oportunidades de aprender.

UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone--not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs.

“DUA” provee de un modelo base para crear objetivos generales y específicos, métodos, materiales y evaluaciones que funcionen para todos los estudiantes, no solo para algunos. No se basa en la idea de que una sola herramienta es aplicable para todos, sino que considera que existen diferentes enfoques que pueden adaptarse y ajustarse a las necesidades individuales de los estudiantes.

President Obama and first Lady, Michelle, called for a united effort to address bullying.
The video shows their concern, and the need, as a nation, to stop this social issue that is destroying safe school environments.

El Presidente Obama y la Primera Dama, Michelle, solicitaron esfuerzo por parte de la comunidad estadounidense para poder resolver el problema de "bullying" o acoso escolar (no existe la traducción exacta en español y decidimos denominarlo "acoso escolar" por se lo más cercano a su significado).

El video muestra la preocupación de ambos y la necesidad de enfrentar este problema como nación, debido a que está destruyendo el ambiente escolar seguro y estable para los niños.

As we mentioned during our presentations, giving the students a choice empowers their learning. They feel they have ownership on what the do, so it's important to "engage them" by providing an attractive menu of activities.
For instance, we brought up strategies that we could use for students to have more choices.Today we'll mention a few to present book reports or as writing prompts...
Como mencionamos en nuestras presentaciones,el proveer a los estudiantes de opciones fortifica su aprendizaje. El hecho de brindarles la opcion de elegir, hace que se adueñen de lo que realicen, y por lo tanto, es importante conquistarlos y atraerlos con un menu de actividades que sea atractivo para ellos.
Por ejemplo: planteabamos que estrategias podemos aplicar, para que los estudiantes tengan mayores opciones. Entre ellas hoy mencionaremos algunas para presentar fichas de libros, o como disparadores de composiciones escritas...
