Messiah Sing this Saturday (11/17)

Soprano Kathryn Aaron, an American Baroque Orchestrafavorite, will sing "Rejoice, greatly..." in the original version, along with other portions of Handel's most renowned masterpiece, at this Saturday's Messiah Sing.

First enjoy a performance of Handel's elegant and melodious Concerto Grosso no. 2 in F, and then come-up to sing Messiah with the American Baroque Orchestra, or just enjoy this masterpiece, led by artistic director Mark Bailey. Then join us for wine, food, and friendship afterward. Your generosity and enthusiasm will help support our most ambition season yet, featuring the Bach St. John Passion on March 23, 2013, as well as other exciting projects.

New NHFPL website launches Nov. 19

The New Haven Bulletin will morph into the Community page of the new NHFPL website when we go live on Monday, November 19!

New features of the redesigned website include

a clickable monthly calendar of library events, making it much easier to find events at any of the NHFPL’s five locations
a new pre-registration option that allows you to apply for a new library card online
pages specifically designed for our young customers, showcasing the multitude of resources, programs and technology available to kids and teens at the NHFPL
a ramped-up search feature called Encore that provides one-stop access to all the trusted resources the library collects or selects, including the full catalog and full-text articles in selected databases
instant language translation of web pages into Spanish and Chinese

highlights featuring noteworthy books and DVDs and staff picks
community announcements and events

New Haven Ballet plans Nutcracker at the Shubert

The Foundation Center has launched the next generation of IssueLab, a web site that provides free and open access to resources that analyze the world's most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges and their potential solutions. The platform contains more than 11,000 documents and represents one of the largest collections of social sector knowledge, spanning 40 issues areas, from agriculture to immigration to welfare. CT Bar Association Insurance Hotline Is Open

The CT Bar Association and its Insurance Law Section provide storm victims with free insurance advice through a free public hotline.

Via a toll-free number (1-866-209-5099) and email address ( hotline@ctbar.org), CBA members will provide free legal advice to individuals and businesses in need of guidance about insurance claims for property damage after a storm or other disaster. The initial contact will go to CBA staff in New Britain, who will fill out an intake form. Staff will then forward the intake form to the next lawyer on the list of participating volunteers.

Call during regular business hours, and emails should use the following subject line: CBA Disaster Insurance. The program has been developed cooperatively with representatives of FEMA, the CT Insurance Department, and the CT Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.

CT Homeowners will not pay hurricane deductibles

Governor Malloy and CT Insurance Dept. Commissioner Thomas Leonardi today announced that Connecticut homeowners will not face higher-cost hurricane deductibles resulting from the impact of this week’s damaging storm.

“The state moved very swiftly to alert the industry that this storm did not meet the criteria for a hurricane deductible under state law. Homeowners will not have to pay high-cost hurricane deductibles for damage resulting from this storm,” Governor Malloy said. “Based on the lessons learned from Tropical Storm Irene, we have built stronger consumer protections into our insurance laws. The Insurance Department will be working with the industry to monitor these claims.”

Commissioner Leonardi notified the industry on Tuesday that based on data from the National Weather Service, Storm Sandy did not meet the statutory criteria and therefore “companies may not impose a hurricane deductible on Connecticut claims.”

“Our consumers and the industry deserve and received clarity from this state as soon as possible,” Commissioner Leonardi explained. “The Insurance Department is monitoring the industry closely to ensure that carriers fully comply with all state insurance laws. Our priority is protecting Connecticut policyholders and we stand ready to assist policyholders with questions and complaints.”

The Insurance Department has set up a special Storm Sandy webpage that offers a number of important resources including, toll-free claims numbers to companies, locations of mobile claims vans, flood insurance claims filing information, and more. Consumers with additional questions can contact the Insurance Department by phone at 1-800-203-3447 or 860-297-3900, or by using the online contact options.
