Disabling automatic superscripts in Word 2007

Word 2007 has the nasty habit of turning any ordinal number you enter (like 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) into a formatted number where the text following the number is a superscript. Here's how to turn that off.

- Click on the Office button in the upper corner and select the Word Options button from the bottom of the menu that is shown.

- In the left hand pane, click Proofing.

- In the Replace section, uncheck the box next to Ordinals (1st) with superscript.

- Click OK as needed to save your changes.

Open Word 2007 documents directly in Firefox

Microsoft has created a plug-in for Firefox that allows you to read docx files (files from Microsoft Word 2007 and later) directly in Firefox even if you don't have Microsoft Office or Word on your computer. Even if you have Office, it's still nicer to read the docs directly in the browser. You can get the free plug-in at http://www.codeplex.com/OpenXMLViewer. Just go there and click on the "Download" link. You then can choose your OS, they have options for Windows and linux.

Printing document backgrounds in Word 2007

If you are printing a document in Microsoft Word 2007 that has a background, by default the background won't be shown when you print the document. If you want the background to be shown when you print the document do this:

- Click on the Office button and select Word Options.

- Select Display in the left pane.

- In the right pane, go down to the Printing options section and check the box next to Print background colors and images.

Click OK to save your changes. Now when you print your documents in Word 2007, any background images will be included in the print out.

Windows 7 : Speed up your boot time

Step 1: Type msconfig into the Start menu search bar

Step 2: Click through to the System configuration screen

Step 3: Select the boot tab. Click on Advanced options and set the number of processors from 2 to 4, depending on whether you system is dual core or quad core.

Windows 7 : Single Click Screen Lock

You can lock your computer using the Win+L keyboard shortcut. Here’s another way to do it with a single mouse click. Right-click on your desktop, select New, Shortcut. In Type the location of the item, enter rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation. Click Next, name the shortcut ‘Quick Lock’, and Finish.

If you wish, you can make it look pretty by giving it a lock or keys icon: Right-click, select Properties, click Change Icon, enter shell32.dll, and select any icon you wish. Drag this shortcut and pin it to the taskbar, after which you can delete the desktop shortcut.

Move the Location of your Temporary Internet files.

When you are browsing your internet, the website you visit placed some temporary files on your computer. The main purpose of temporary files to save your preferences that you specify for future reference. Normally internet temporary files are saved on C drive in windows folder but you can change the location of temporary folder to hide your internet browsing history from others.

If you are using Internet Explorer then follow the given steps to change the location of temporary folder.

Open Internet Explorer, click on the Tools then Internet Options.
Go to General tab then Settings button under the Temporary Internet Files.
Here click on Move folder button then select new location to save Temporary files on different drive or computer.
Now restart your computer for this change.

Windows 7 : Taskbar Too Big? Shrink It!

By default, Windows 7's Taskbar takes up more room at the bottom of the screen than the Taskbar in previous versions of Windows. This makes the buttons easier to see, plus they are easier to press if you are using a touch screen.

Some people may use a smaller monitor and find the Taskbar takes up too much room, and others need a little extra room for open applications and other windows. Thus, Windows 7 has an option that shrinks the taskbar size slightly for those that could use the extra pixels:

1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and choose "Properties".

2. The "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box appears. Check "Use small icons".

Rename your digital photos automatically in Windows XP

Unless you really have a lot of time on your hands, I doubt you want to go through the massive folder that contains your European vacation photos and rename them Europe_1.jpg, Europe_2.jpg, and so on down the line. If you're running Windows XP on your computer, you don't have to do this. Simply apply this hack to quickly apply a meaningful label to every picture in the folder.

- First, open your folder.

- Click the last picture in the folder you want to rename, hold down the Shift key, and click the first picture; this will select them all.

- Right-click the first photo, and select Rename from the drop-down menu.

- This example, I will rename first file to Myphoto.jpg

- After you type in the name, click the white space outside of the photo and watch as Windows applies the name with a sequential number to each picture in the folder.

Hidding Desktop Icons in Windows XP

If you value the aesthetic potential of your desktop, you might like to enhance it even further by hiding the desktop icons.

Hiding or showing your desktop icons in Windows XP is a simple, two-click procedure.

To hide desktop icons:

- Right-click on the desktop and open the "Arrange Icons By" sub-menu.
- In the sub-menu, click "Show Desktop Icons" to uncheck it.

The icons should disappear to leave a clean, uncluttered desktop. To show desktop icons again, repeat the above procedure. When the icons are hidden, clicking on "Show Desktop Icons" will enable the option and the icons will reappear.
