I went into this book not knowing much about it, which I think was best after seeing the reviews. It seems it was marketed as a Game of Thrones , YA sort of deal, and it really wasn't. It was very much an epic fantasy/sci-fi, character-driven story with an emphasis on the internal (character development) rather than the external (heart-pounding action). It wasn't what I would call a fast read, but I loved it nonetheless and recommend it to those who like character-based fantasies. It is not YA; it is gritty and violent and deals with some tough things. I thought it added to the world and the pressures on the new Queen of the Tearling.Kelsea is the rightful heir to the throne of a region called the Tearling. She's been hidden away in isolation with two foster parents for her whole life because there's a queen in a neighboring land that wants to take over the Tearling. Kelsea turns nineteen, the age where she can rule, and she's transported to New London, the capital of the Tearling. Assassins are after her and it's not an easy trip, but she meets her Queen's Guard, which holds two of the most interesting characters of the book, the Mace and Pen. She also meets the Fetch, another mysterious character. When she arrives, she realizes that taking her place as queen is not going to be easy. As the story progresses, she faces several obstacles while trying to do what is right.Kelsea is really an admirable character. She's got guts and an iron will and a dedication to make people's lives better, but she's not without her insecurities and vulnerabilities, which was awesome. I saw that some people doesn't like her comments about appearance and her self-consciousness, but I thought it was realistic. What 19 year old doesn't think of their appearance, especially one who's exposed to huge crowds when she's lived in a remote village her whole life? She pushed past it, and it made me like her more. Oh, and she adores books and wants to promote reading and literacy in the Tearling. Brownie points.As for the world, there wasn't as much explanation as I would have expected, with little hints dropped here and there. Although it feels like a medieval fantasy with horses and swords and magic necklaces, I believe it actually takes place in the future where a man created a utopia after a catastrophic event. There are references to The Hobbit and Harry Potter , which was really neat. I've heard that the world is better explained in the sequel. The mystery of it all didn't bother me, though.There is no romance in this book. As someone who likes a dash of romance, I actually didn't mind the lack of it because the character interactions were so well-done, and I see the potential for a little in the future books.And the hardcover edition is freakin' gorgeous. I love the cover, the binding, the cool map inside, the little ribbon bookmark. I can't wait to get my hands on the second book!

Now if the responsible for this logorrhea reads my review: Dear Sir or Madam, I hate women's parking places, because I almost always see males parking there their big cars as they canâ€™t be bothered to use the smaller parking lot 5 meters away. I donâ€™t like being told that women canâ€™t drive, spent endless time in front of the mirror or collect shoes en masse. If you read the book youâ€™ll find out that our heroine is especially a character described as un-female-like.Apart from my personal misgivings with the marketing Iâ€™d like to refer to the four points mentioned in the blurb:1. A world as fully imagined and terrifying as that of The Hunger Games2. Characters as vivid and intriguing as those of The Game of Thrones3. A wholly original heroine4. Thrilling action and twisting plot turns1. A world as fully imagined and terrifying as that of The Hunger GamesWhy do we always have to compare things to â€œThe Hunger Gamesâ€, â€œGame of Thronesâ€, â€œHarry Potterâ€ or â€œTwilightâ€ or whatever? This book is no copycat; the world building is â€œsame same but differentâ€. Itâ€™s the typical fantasy world setup: a fictional European, feudalistic, medieval world with a backwards technological status.What makes it unique is the background history: William Tear, an utopist from our time, decided to cross an ominous ocean to an unknown new world on ships together with 2000 followers building a better world. His dream was that of pure socialism, leaving behind technology and religion (the false gods, so to speak). They land in a country of scarce resources. The great socialist vision of William Tear erodes after the Landing ending in a coup complete with assassination and finally initiation of a royal monarchy and the reawakening of religious fascism with some parallels to the National Socialism (->Cardinal Anders wore a small gold pin in the shape of a hammer, a memento of his time spent on the Regentâ€™s anti-sodomy squads). The story starts a few hundred years after the Crossing. I was fascinated by this setup but found it rather disrupting to the flow. For example, a few times characters refer in dialogues to fictional or real characters: Caesar, Helen of Troy, Brother Grimm, Scheherazade or Leonardo da Vinci.â€œWhat exactly are you asking for, Scheherazade?â€â€œDevotion to your God and your church is more important than your understanding of the things of Caesar.â€Whatever those names should have achieved, they didnâ€™t sway me. A lot of books are mentioned, talked about or read: J.K. Rawlingsâ€™ seven-book-bundle of Harry Potter, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and the works of a historian called Barbara Tuchman.The mentioning felt out of place, superimposed and constructed like when the Red Queen tells us she is a geneticist, perhaps the most advanced geneticist since the Crossing, or when a normal talk is interrupted by the mentioning of plastic or transplant surgery, eBooks, etc. For me this always felt more like a waking gong. Bam! It just didnâ€™t fit at all with the entire magical, medieval world.Having said that, there are also other references that I found totally awesome: A lot of well-known elements are integrated into the plot without being too obvious but still discernible: There is an almost Robin Hood like secondary character playing an important role, there is the â€œTrue Queenâ€ element of the Arthurian Legend, there is of course the very plain addition of the Red Queen (no other name is known), a Lewis Carroll character from Through the Looking-Glass, we also have a lot of Scottish, Welsh, Irish mythology thrown into the mix. Names and nicknames are very important to the story. I wonâ€™t take your fun away looking them up. But I found this really a nice add-on. I like to look things up, and to see that an author has put some thought into naming characters and integrating folklore elements when it fits. Just a small example, the Robin Hood-alike is called The Fetch. This is a supernatural double or apparition of a living person in Irish folklore. It is largely akin to the doppelgÃ¤nger, and sightings are regarded as omens, usually for impending death. The Fetch was easily one the most intriguing characters for me throughout the story.2. Characters as vivid and intriguing as those of The Game of ThronesNo, no, no. Simply said the characters were not that intriguing as those of GoT. A lot of the secondary cast was quite flat or one-dimensional. There were almost no characters with duplicity or hidden motifs. As with the world building sometimes also the characterization seemed too technical, straight out of the textbook. The Red Queen, even though we have her POV, is typical evil, ordering slaves killed for snoring. Arliss, the new Treasurer, is a bookie and black market business man, with a lame left side; tufts of white hear sprouting out of his ears and the acrid smell of old flesh. There are also spiderlike, cunning, evil characters, crazy albinos and self-pitying, fat and illiterate adversaries. It is overdone, in my opinion. You are simply not guessing long who is standing on which side. If someone claims those characters are as vivid and intriguing as those of GoT, then I simply have to say, no they are not. But I still liked reading about them. It would have been maybe better to integrate more POV like those of Javel, leave the Red Queen POV out and make some of the characters less obviously loyal and more ambiguous.3. A wholly original heroineIâ€™ll keep that one short. Kelsea is original, Iâ€™ll grant that. She is intelligent, calculative so far so that someone even compares her to a computer, a machine who can compare many variables at once. It is not a too farfetched observation as Kelsea really seems very rational and even cold / offish at times. Outwardly she acts and thinks well above her 19 years. She was born and educated to be a (good) queen other than her vain, superficial and helpless mother. But her character is overdone. She is not only plain, but almost pudgy. This circumstance is being conjured a lot throughout the story. As if not enough she also has to wear an armor (that flattens her breast) and to cut her long hair at some point, which to me was not that necessary. At the end of the book she has almost no feminine qualities left and looks just like a chubby, young soldier. Canâ€™t an intelligent girl be also kind of nice looking? She doesnâ€™t have to be beautiful but at least leave her some female appeal. It disappointed me a little bit to see Kelseaâ€™s character reduced to a virago.4. Thrilling action and twisting plot turnsI donâ€™t complain, but this is a long read. There is a lot of introduction, set-up and bit of info-dumping in the beginning but not too much. The action is limited to a few chapters but it is thrilling, with a lot of blood and amputated arms and legs flying around the battle. Gory! But plot turns? Not much. I think this might get better in following books but in this one the plot flows fairly lineal and predictable.

It is an unfortunate paradox Haun notes that, where the U.S. may prefer brute force to coercion, these power asymmetries may well lead it to first attempt coercive strategies that are expected to fail in order to justify the war it desires.

He concludes that, when coercion is preferred to brute force there are clear limits as to what can be demanded. In such cases, he suggests, U.S. policymakers can improve the chances of success by matching appropriate threats to demands, by including other great powers in the coercive process, and by reducing a weak state leader's reputational costs by giving him or her face-saving options.

I have Dale Carnegie, and I just want a little book with good tips inexpensive.

It's a concise book that is a great reminder of things you may have been taught long ago, or perhaps were doing unconsciously- if you're lucky. Some tips I definitely feel like most people do not know, including answering questions with information that leads to a dead end. If you're socially awkward, you definitely want to read this, it breaks down what to do (AND not do, which I appreciated) very specifically. I'm outgoing and feel comfortable navigating a party of strangers, but this has explained how to skip some awkward conversations that I definitely have had and do not want to have again!

This review is just for the Kindle book. It was scanned in badly and has so many spelling errors in it that it's completely unreadable. It has at least one spelling error per sentence. I'm stuck with it since there's no possibility of a refund, but learn from my mistake!

I struggle with talking to others; specifically: talking to those who don't know me well, or share my interests. They are things I have to see in writing, usually provided with subtleties that I didn't consider. The most valuable tips for somebody like myself are those in the first half of the book. Later on, they begin to be more business related, but I can still see their value, despite currently being in college.The book gets five stars from me because it provides tons of valuable advice; in addition, Leil keeps it interesting by giving personal examples and stories alongside her tricks. I fully intend to come back to this book to help make these tricks habit. After a full read, it becomes a guide, you'll look back at conversations and realize what tricks you used, or failed to use.

Why does it seem like every time I turn the page, the author is invited to another "exclusive" dinner or party? Why is this always the tone you use to set the stage? How is this going to allow us as readers to find her relatable? Also, the subtle name dropping of "my very successful friend who works on Wall Street for a very successful investment firm who does charity work for blah blah blah" detracts from the main messages of the book: learning how to talk to people. I don't care about who you're friends with, Leil.These messages (which are quite useful! and I've employed several with great success!) are the main point of the book, and would be more effectively conveyed if the author had stopped trying to impress us with everyone she supposedly is bffs with. If you ask me, she needs to do some research on how to become more approachable/likeable, for which her current skills are bland at best.

A bit difficult to rate.In one side Leil writing is witty and filled with anecdotes to deliver her pointsOn the other side the tricks offered feel like too much. Some of then would drive people crazy overthinking, and her funny stories get annoying when she involves stereotypes and genders. And that leads to a boring book. Moreover many of her chapters are about how to MAKE people think believe or act in certain ways and that is merely manipulative.

I was desperate, but skeptical when I ordered this book. Ever since becoming a member of an editorial team at my high school, I've encountered countless moments when I JUST can't seem to communicate on a personal level with the rest of the staff members, who were all a grade above me.Yes. I felt timid every time I spoke to the editors, and despite how much I wanted to talk to them, I couldn't even make it past a thirty second conversation. And after I accidentally goofed on our FIRST release? Oh god none of them even bothered to talk to me after that... And I felt way too threatened to try to start a conversation. So the result was this: I suffered from becoming the social outcast because of a pretty bad first impression.....After reading the book, I understood why.1) I abused the Quick-smiles that were mentioned as shallow in the first chapter. I would flash a smile that immediately disappear after three seconds (or less). I'm now working on the "flowing smile" technique :D :)2) I simply had 0 skills in making small conversations. Usually the small talks end with me or the listener just running off with a "Oh I've gotta go now"3) It was my specialty to ask overly obvious questions and make the most awkward comments at the worst times.....4) The "instant history" technique was something I never used despite the various circumstances I catch myself in.5) I fidgeted a lot and gave embarrassed smiles when I wasn't feeling embarrassed.6) technique #88, "my goof your gain" was something I really should have used to ease the tension.....well darn it. I'll just keep trying with this book's help. :D

About the Author

Joseph Moravek is the HVACR director at Nance Universal HVACR Technical School in Beaumont, Texas, where he is responsible for short- and long-term training course development and updating curriculum. He also occasionally teaches local and overseas HVACR classes for Nance. In addition, he serves as a consultant with Mechanical Training Service, Houston, Texas, doing EPA training, continuing education for contractors and other custom developed coursework. A licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor in the state of Texas, he holds several ICE and NATE certifications, is a member of the ASHRAE, CARE and AEE professional organizations and has a master's degree in education. Mr. Moravek started in the HVACR profession in 1976 doing heat load calculation for a federally-funded weatherization program. His experience also includes working as an HVACR technician and inspector for the city of Houston. He served as the HVACR lead instructor at Lee College for 14 years.

I love this book. I recommend it to anyone that plans on going into hvac/r. It covers a broad base of subjects clearly. Very easy to understand. The best part is the beginning, I still read it to get pumped up about being in/entering the hvac/r field.

I ordered this required text for a course my son was taking. It sounds like he nearly memorized the book.However, all potential employers in his area (southern Florida)want 3-5 years of experience, which he has notbeen able to achieve - no one apparently wants an apprentice or helper without years of hands-on.Since this text was required for his class and specified by the experienced teacher, I presume it is very good.It is simply not very helpful all on its own.

I'm starting a career in HVAC and my instructor is using this book for the class! I'm already steps ahead of the other students because the illustrations and easy-to-read format allows me to sink right in and next thing you know, I'm several pages deep into studying. I can't say how much this book is providing me with valuable insight in the HVAC trades, all the rest of the books on HVAC aren't as colorful and make the technical information hurt my head. seriously! With this book, everything is clearly described so that learning becomes fun and stress free. Its the IDEAL book for beginners and people looking for basic but CRUCIAL insight into the trade.

After waiting for it's release, with high anticipation, I was totally disappointed.Put together by the industries top training organizations and educators, it was a total disappointment.I have been working in this industry since 1965,teaching trade since 1974 and grew up with Master Electrician,(Grandfather)Master Heating Technician,(Father), and Master Plumber (Uncle)so I have a solid background.Also retired US Army Refrigeration Specialist.The information was very sketchy, and I would not recommend this book . JMHO.

About the Author
Dan O'Hair is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Oklahoma. He received his Ph.D. in 1982 from The University of Oklahoma in communication. He has published over forty articles in business and communication journals and has authored and edited six books focusing on communication. O'Hair has served as a consultant to numerous businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. He is the former president of the El Paso chapter of the American Society for Training and Development and has served on the editorial board of five communication journals including the Journal of Business Communication and is the current editor of the Journal of Applied Communication Research. He is principal investigator and course administrator for the Department of Defense's Joint Course in Communication, an intensive eight-week course in advanced communication study.

Lynda Dee Dixon is Associate Professor in the Department of Interpersonal Communication at Bowling Green State University. She has served as Graduate Coordinator in the School of Communication Studies and as Faculty Associate in the Graduate College. Previously, she has been on the faculty at the University of Oklahoma, University of New Mexico, and Indiana University-South Bend. A Cherokee from Oklahoma, she began her research by studying the health communication of Oklahoma American Indian women. Her research has focused on diversity issues in health, education, and professional organizations. Dixon's publications include a co-edited book on women in prison, book chapters, and journal articles. Her three most recent journal articles have focused on the effects of architecture and posted signs in federal health care facilities for American Indians, and the phenomenon of rap music. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in health communication, intercultural communication, and organizational communication.

The material covered in this book in comprehensive and explained in good detail. I am very happy to have purchased and read through much of this book. The reading is not as much fun as reading a biology book and I had the benefit of being pushed to do the reading in the form of reading assignments in class. I am thankful to have been pushed to do this reading as the information content of the book is excellent. But had I not been motivated by class assignments, I would have read much slower and covered much less material. I am thankful to to have learned what I have learned from this book. It was all new to me. Excellent book. A little bit of a tough read.

Excellent book if you are interested in bioinformatics.goes over the fundamentals and into depth of how gene processing was originally done and how newer databases expand on old methods

Book is great for anyone that wants to get an understanding of bioinformatics. It is also useful for expert bioinformaticians.

This was a very dense book, but had some good information. I bought this for a college class, and I cannot imagine anyone reading this simply for fun.

This book covers simple topics such as basic biology and sequence alignment to more complicated topics such as hidden markov models and prediction algorithms. Overall, a great book for teaching or as a reference.

The topics covered in this book have been of great benefit to me in my Graduate studies in bioinformatics. The layout and presentation of material is clear and concise and delves into detail where necessary. I'm not a big user of mind-mapping, but the topic maps that precede each chapter allowed me to quickly tie together key concepts and my courses covering the material have allowed me to rely on this book as a supplmental reference where necessary to help me with material I needed further expansion on.I found the coverage of phylogeny and tree construction to be of great benefit and I regularly use this book as a go to reference at work when I need to recall or review a topic.If you are bioinformatician or a computer scientist who needs a good reference for the key concepts applied to everyday bioinformatics, or just an individual interested in learning about bioinformatics concepts, this is a good book for learning bioinformatics theory.

It's clear and starts from conceptual issues using real exercises. I did not understand the principles of bioinformatics but now I understand many things!

They have done good job with figures but the text is too dry and one tend to loose interest overtime. This book will introduce you to the problems that Bioinformaticians deal with but don't expect to get any hands on skills. There are better books like 'Bioinformatics Data Skills' by Vince Buffalo for that purpose. In fact those practical skills are so important that I would suggest you read that book before you consider to buy this one. Hoping there will be a newer edition to this as things are moving very fast in this field.
