My Review:

I am not a huge fan of historical fiction so can't recall why I accepted this book to review, in all honesty. However, I must not bare that in mind when reviewing this as that would be... rediculous. I can't blame that on the author or allow it to swing my overall review of the book, now can I? (Although, if I had a penny for how many do, especially on Amazon).

This book spans years and lives, cultures and beleifs. It covers relational issues, historical and political, even religious issues are bought to bare witness. The characters were interesting, reflecting on past and present, hopes and wishes, familial issues of loss and abandonment and a cold, loveless parent; who loved his obsession more than his children.

The writing was top notch, no worries there.... except...

The formatting of the copy I reviewed made the reading process difficult and frustrating. Capitals weren't where they should be, repeated paragraphs popped up with alternate styles, and other general formatting issue littered the text. I would hope these issues would be ironed out before the actual publication date in March, however.

I can't say I massively enjoyed the book, but thats more to do with my genre preferences and is entirely my own fault for choosing an out-of-genre novel to read. Sometimes doings so is a great idea. This time, not so much. There was too much 'literary' and not enough movement for my liking.

In essence, I'll say do not let me to put you off this book. If you enjoy this type of book, go for it. :)

Because a commentor's seemed upset regarding my reviewing something I wouldn't usually, I've added an update:

Did I enjoy reading this book? Not really - 3/5. How would I rate the authors writing talent in this genre 5/5. Will I follow this author after reading this book? No. Is that because she is a talentless author? Absolutely not! Would I recommend this book to readers of this genre - Yes.

There, I hope I've made that clearer. :)

PS: I received this for review via the publishers, from Net Galley. The formatting issue was on the pre-published copy I'm assured by the author.

The British Influence On Sci-Fi by Steven M. Moore

Recently, I was thrilled to interview Sci-Fi/Thriller author Steven M. Moore, and today he returns with his guest post:

How British Sci-Fi Influenced My Writing…

Many writers are avid readers, at least in their own genre. In fact, I can’t understand how anyone can be a writer without being an avid reader. I suppose there are exceptions. I am also a reviewer, but I read many more books than I review. Some of my reading is information-oriented; most is just entertainment—TV in most parts has few good programs. Consequently, as a native Californian, it’s obvious that American sci-fi has influenced my writing. Less obvious is the influence of British sci-fi authors. There is a reason for that—dystopian vision.

The Chaos

My works, with the exception of a few short stories, have lurking in the background what I call “the social singularity;” my novel Survivors of the Chaos moves through it, for example. Unlike a black hole, this singularity is diffuse in space and time. It represents a particular state in world affairs where social problems become so complex that politicians and political institutions are incapable of solving them; where fundamentalist attitudes and local xenophobias have become so prevalent and ingrained that the traditional empires break up into more homogeneous, almost tribal units; and where multinational corporations, ever greedy for new markets and more profits, hire mercenary armies in an attempt to keep order.

This state I call the Chaos. In brief, it’s my dystopian vision of humanity’s future. It’s not all bleak—I always sprinkle in a bit of hope here and there, championed by heroic individuals, of course!

How did I develop such a negative vision of what’s in store for us?

Aldous Huxley

Mostly from early British authors. More modern sci-fi authors like C. M. Kornbluth, John Christopher (pen name for Samuel Youd), Phillip K. Dick, Ray Bradbury and others had their own visions. I started there.

At the time, I could only move into the past. I discovered H. G. Wells and The Time Machine, Aldous Huxley and his Brave New World and Ape and Essence, Arthur Koestler and Darkness at Noon, C. S. Lewis’ Out of the Silent Planet, and George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm. Note that these older books are all written by British authors, many of them disenchanted with war and totalitarian regimes (Koestler was born Hungarian but spent most of his life in Britain).

Sci-fi Thrillers

Another characteristic of my books is that they are thrillers. Sci-fi thriller is a cross-genre, of course. While most sci-fi books have some thriller aspects, mine emphasize them a bit more (The Midas Bomb is more thriller than sci-fi and Survivors is more sci-fi than thriller). Here the U.K. authors Arthur Conan Doyle and G. K. Chesterton were influences, both for the twists and apparent paradoxes contained in their stories. The anarchists who were not quite what they seemed to be in Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Thursday became a loose model for the conspirators in my novel Full Medical. (Many years before, the fact that the Irish hero Michael Collins was inspired by Chesterton’s book led me to look more into Irish history in my mental quest to understand the origins of The Troubles, but that doesn’t relate much to my writing.)

The Chicken-and-Egg Puzzle

Many sci-fi authors have a scientific background. I’m no exception. Whether the creative writing of science fiction stories precedes the creative research of the scientist or not is a chicken-and-egg puzzle. When I started reading science fiction, I certainly didn’t have enough preparation to produce solid scientific research results. Yet many authors writing what has come to be called “hard sci-fi” certainly inspired me to stick with math and science. Nevertheless, I don’t become over-burdened trying to make my sci-fi too “hard” because, as a scientist, I am fully aware of the dangers of extreme extrapolation. Two British authors who handle it far better than I and greatly influenced me were Arthur C. Clarke, with his Childhood’s End and Rendezvous with Rama, and Fred Hoyle with The Black Cloud.

Some Influential U.K. Authors

U.K. authors have carried on the tradition of dystopian sci-fi and I paid attention. Some examples: Brian W. Aldiss with Non-Stop (Starship in the U.S.); William Golding with Lord of the Flies; John Christopher (Samuel Youd) with The Death of Grass (No Blade of Grass in the U.S.); Margaret Atwood ; and P. D. James with The Children of Men.

Several movies have championed the dystopian point of view: Blade Runner, Alien, The Children of Men, and Avatar, among others. The recent Fox show in the U.S. titled Terra Nova is a dystopian view of the future, as were Max Headroom and Firefly.

The books I just listed carried on the British tradition (to be fair, Margaret Atwood is Canadian and is adamant about calling her works speculative fiction—I refuse to distinguish between sci-fi and speculative fiction). The movies and TV shows prove that dystopia is still popular. The question is: why? Those early British novels, depressing as they might seem, are reflections of the horrific deeds men did to their fellow men during the world wars. A bit later, there was the disenchantment with communism and other totalitarian regimes, mostly a Cold War phenomenon.

Today—and I also speak for myself—another type of disenchantment defines our dystopian writing. The infectious hope and enthusiasm engendered by the fall of the Soviet Union and many totalitarian regimes throughout the Third World are slowly being swept away by the realization that humanity’s future just might be incompatible with the Earth’s. We are destroying the environment; our natural resources including the rain forests, the lungs of the planet, are disappearing; we cannot hope to feed everyone a basic, healthy diet; and we cannot provide minimal healthcare to everyone. It is a new dystopia in the sense that there are glimmers of hope. In some small way, writing about it is my way of warning my fellows and ensure a future for my grandchildren. It’s certainly not the only reason I write and not the most important one either, but I have chosen that orientation for my writing for these reasons.

Chapter 1

Finn

Sometimes Emma made me feel so alive, I almost forgot I was dead.

Almost.

I sank down onto the side of her bed, amazed by the blazing wildfire that swept through me whenever Emma was near enough to touch. I took a deep, unneeded breath, and settled down on my side next to her. The mattress didn’t sink. The springs didn’t groan with the weight of an extra body. The distance between us was an impossible void. Inches that might as well have been miles. Miles that left me wanting in so many ways that I ached.

Even the sun couldn’t resist her. Its glowing rays caressed her skin, and stained her hair the satiny color of summer wheat. Before I knew what was happening, my hand followed their lead. Cells ignited. My skin burned, screaming with the agonizing need to touch—

“What do you think you’re doing?”

I jerked my hand away just as Easton melted up from the polished hardwood floor beneath the window. Like an oil slick coming to life, he unfolded his long, shadowy legs until he was just an ink blot against the square of tangerine sunrise behind him. His violet eyes pinned me like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Which, I kind of was.

“Nothing,” I lied.

“Yeah, looked like nothing.” He strolled across the room accompanied by a wave of sulfur and smoke, the black serpent tattoo on his neck glinting. “What were you planning to do, recite her poem? I swear to God, if you were still alive I’d confiscate your man card.”

I ignored the barb and scrunched up my nose. “Jesus, Easton. Don’t they have a shower somewhere between here and the afterlife?”

“Screw you. You didn’t just have to tow somebody’s grandpa to Hell.” He brushed something chalky and grey off of his cloak and a shudder worked its way down my spine. God only knows who or what it belonged to. “Besides I wasn’t the one about to feel up a sleeping human.”

“I wasn’t—”

“Save it.” He waved his hand. “We have work to do. I don’t have time for your useless obsession with the human today.”

“Will you please stop calling her that?”

“What?” Easton glanced up from Emma’s vanity, where he’d been inspecting the various lotions and bottles like he was on some alien planet. Then again, Easton had been dead for something like four hundred years, so all of her stuff probably was sort of alien to him.

“The human. You make me sound like a freak. It’s not like we’re a different species for God’s sake. We were humans, too, or don’t you remember that far back?”

“Were. Past tense.”

We could have gone back and forth like that for hours, but the call came. It always did. It started in my bones—a cold so cutting that it sliced through me like a machete. When I looked up, Easton’s jaw was clenched, his muscles taut and ready. He slowly closed his hand around the handle of his scythe that burned black and softly smoked at his side. I flexed my fingers as the icy ribbons of death worked their way through each one of my limbs.

“Can you take this one for me?” I asked. “You’re already going to be there, and I just got back—”

“No,” Easton said. “Hell no. I have my own job to do. I can’t keep covering for your sorry ass. Besides, you’re already on thin ice with Balthazar. Don’t push your luck, Finn. Just keep your nose down, collect your souls, and thank the Almighty that you don’t have my job. Now let’s go.”

“Yeah, but…” My eyes returned to Emma. Sleeping. Perfect. Safe.

“For the love of God. She’ll be fine, you pansy.” Easton clamped a hand over my shoulder and dragged me from the bed.

“How do you know?”

He shrugged. “I don’t.”

With that he vanished, consumed in a flash by the keening wails of the damned. The screams beckoned. Clawed at me from the inside out.

Rule one as a seeker: Death doesn’t wait for anyone.

And it sure as hell wasn’t waiting for me now.

Part 2: Guest Post.

My Rocky Road as a Literary Agent

I began my career working in the tech industry alongside engineers who had no interest in books unless they were technical. After three long years, I decided it was time to quit my job and follow my passion. My husband had a good job at the time, but before I left my cushy job in the information technology department to find a job at a publishing company, I saved up a few months of income for a rainy day.

The first week of unemployment was tough. I was so scared that I sat on the couch and watched TV, wondering if I had made a mistake. Then I saw one of my favorite authors on The View. My life changed at that moment. I was excited about my future again and realized the shock of quitting my job was actually preventing me from moving forward.

The next day I pulled myself out of this slump and told myself it was time to go after my dream. I cold-called several publishing companies and asked if they had any positions open. I was stunned when I discovered one of the company’s literary agents was looking for an assistant.

My husband and I already lived in New York, so I was thankful we didn’t have to move across country if I landed the job. The next day I put on my best pantsuit and showed up at the office, resume in hand; I had spent four long hours the night before polishing my resume. I did not leave until I met the agent and got a chance to sell myself.

Three weeks later I was hired. She told me she had liked my drive and my professionalism. She also liked the fact that I was a tech nerd because she needed someone to set up her social media presence.

Then the doubt set in on my first day of the job. I kept asking myself the same questions over and over. What have I done? Why did I leave one job for another job only to cut my salary in half? What if I failed? What if I got bored? What would happen if she fired me? Would I never work in this town again?

Things quickly changed when I started to set up the social media presence. My boss had trained me well. We did have our bad days. She had warned me several times that I needed to keep up with her. I don’t think anyone could keep up with her. She had ten meetings a day, dealt with piles of paperwork, and she had two young kids at home. If she could do it with two children in her late thirties, then I surely could keep up. I was only in my early thirties and I had no kids. I had no excuse not to do the job right.

My passion drove me to succeed. Two years later, she brought me on as a junior agent. Everything happened so quickly, but I worked hard and learned the business fast. Now I share my knowledge with others.

Top 3 things writers need to know when trying to land an agent:

1.) If we can’t get past the first page in a manuscript because of poor grammar, then we move on. We get hundreds of query letters and sample chapters a day, so we only want to see the best work. I received my Bachelor’s in computer science, but I still take classes to keep my writing polished and to keep current with the changes being made in the publishing industry. I am always learning and I admire others who never stop learning.

2.) Finish the book before pitching it. If we ask to see the full manuscript, then we prefer to see it in the next week. I read hundreds of query letters, sample chapters, and full manuscripts every week, and when I see an author has done her homework, then I take notice. I want the author to work as hard as I did when I started.

3.) And lastly, I don’t like attitudes because I never gave my boss an attitude. I’ve had authors tell me they were the next big-name author. I feel the same way. I feel I would make a great superstar author, but my manuscripts have yet to see the light of day because I know what sells and what doesn’t. My boss would have fired me a long time ago if I didn’t know a good manuscript from a bad one. That’s why I don’t show her mine, because I can admit they need work.

One last note that I remind myself every day: Never stop following your passion because you just never know where you’ll end up. Maybe one day you’ll be sitting in my chair.
