New Ubin Seafood is a Singapore family run business offering fresh seafood and top quality meats, served in a unique array of Zi Char, Southern Indian and other Asian/Western cooking styles. The outlay of the restaurant is sort like a kampong which represents the true essence of Pulau Ubin.

New Ubin Seafood instantly became one of my favorite "zi char" places in Singapore after I went there for dinner with my dad one night. The next time my family wants a gathering (they have private rooms too), I would recommend them to go here because the food is delicious and affordable.

Below are some of the dishes I ordered and here's my review:

Foie Gras Egg Special $9

Comments: An example of top class food (Foie Gras) mix with coffee shop style (60 min slow-cooked egg). But don't be fooled because the combination was flawless. Singaporeans are used to having soft boiled eggs for breakfast, putting soy/dark soy sauce. As a substitute for the sauce, the foie gras topped with truffle salt compliments the dish perfectly.

Home Smoked Pork Collar ($14/S, $20/L)

Comments: This is a must try!!! Similar to the taste and texture of Char Siew, but much more delicious due to the marination. It's something I would order again and again.

Salted Egg Oyster ($15/S, $18/M, $24/L)

Comments: If you are a fan of salted egg dishes and a fan of oysters like me, this is a must try. On first try, it may taste weird, but on second bite, it makes me want to eat more. The only downside is that it can be quite filling and that you can't enjoy the other delicious food available.

Boss Bee Hoon ($8/S, $14/M, $16/L)

Comments: Why is it named Boss Bee Hoon? I reckon it's because it's the boss signature dish. Not your typical tze char bee hoon that you normally find. A tinge of sweetness and a slight spice to it, makes it something you should try. (S) are individual portions, so you can just order a small to share if you go as a couple, because I feel the hokkien mee (below) tastes nicer.

Fried Hokkien Mee Special ($12/S, $24/L)

Comments: Basically I feel anything with pork lard mostly tastes nice. But the Hokkien Mee served here is really good. The flavor is just right and the stock is delicious. Together with pork belly, baby squids, clams and prawn, my dad and I found ourselves finishing the plate of noodles in a jiffy.

Har Cheong Kai (Shrimp Paste Chicken) ($14/S, $18/M, $20/L)

Comments: I haven't tried many fried chicken wings in Singapore but the chicken wings here are delicious. Crispy with every bite and not very oily. Can order if you love fried chicken wings.

Baby Kai Lan (Boss Style) ($8/S, $12/M, $16/L)

Comment: Fresh crunchy vegetables. Don't really order Kai Lan regularly (normally go for kang kong or sweet potato leaves), I found the dish normal in taste. A bit different would be the fried shredded Kai Lan leaves with silver fish on top.

Overall Review: As it was only me and my dad eating, we didn't order anything big. Overall the food was really delicious and the next time I go back, I would like to order their crabs and steak to try. Remember to make a reservation 2-3 days before because they are normally full house during the weekends.

Kin Kin Chilli Pan Mee

So Kin Kin Pan Mee has arrive in Singapore and after much fanfare, the crowd has finally disperse and waiting time is not that long now. Although I haven't tried the original one (I will soon as I'm heading to KL for work), this is my short review:

Ordered the soup with fishballs, meatballs and 2 pieces of tofu skin, fishballs were bouncy and big. Meatballs were quite small in comparison though. The tofu skin was not bad.

The noodles were bland at first. But after adding their special chilli, the taste of the dish totally changed. Mixed it up with their half boiled egg and it was quite delicious. However I felt the price was quite expensive as I ordered the baby clams set. But at least now people need not drive up to KL to have it.

Koung's Wan Tan Noodles

Although I have not tried all the Wanton Mee stalls in Singapore, I still consider this place the best Wanton Mee in Singapore. It has also been voted as the best by Straits Times. The noodle is very tasty, not too dry, not too wet and the texture is just fine. The chilli is awesome. The char siew is also slightly fat but tender which makes it really enjoyable to eat. The wanton is not as fantastic because it is quite small, but the noodles make up for it.

50 Must Eat In Singapore (Part 1: 1 - 25)

Since next year is Singapore's 50th birthday, I decided to do a 50 must eat in Singapore.

Let's say you come from overseas and you would like to try some local food, this post covers most food that is commonly found in most places (Newton food centre/East Coast Lagoon/Old Airport Road food centre/Chomp Chomp/ Maxwell Food Centre) just to name a few. The good thing about Singapore food is that you can have them for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even supper.

I cover mostly hawker food and some restaurant food. These foods are not exclusive to Singapore as some can be found in neighboring S.E.A countries also. In order not to make my post too boring. I decided to split the post.

Disclaimer: Photos are just an example of where you can find the food. Pictures of the food may vary due to different cooking technique. Places covered does not mean it's the best in Singapore. All photos are taken by me.

Noodles

1. Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee

There are two types of prawn mee found in Singapore. One is the soupy type (point. 11), another is the fried type. A mixture of yellow and white noodles, together with prawn stock, this version is dry yet wet. Comes with cuttlefish and prawns. Has a sweet flavor. Squeezing the lime juice over it enhances the taste, and when there's really nice chilli paste, it's super delicious.

2. Char Kway Teow

A very unhealthy but also very delicious dish. A nice dish of char kway teow is normally slightly wet, sweet and slightly spicy. Mainly has ingredients such as beansprouts, pork lard, egg and "lup cheong" (A type of dried Chinese sausage)

3. Curry Chicken Noodles

Curry Chicken Noodles is a great meal on a cold day. Normally I would go for bee hoon/mee and ask for chicken thigh. A big bowl of noodles normally comes with potatoes, tau pok, beansprouts and tender pieces of chicken, all in a big bowl of piping hot curry gravy. The curry gravy is slightly thinner than normal curry so it acts like a soup base. It is also not as spicy.

4. Laksa

The way of eating laksa is very different from eating other type of noodles. Laksa is only eaten with a spoon as the noodles are snipped to a scoop size. It is easier to eat and is fuss free. Normally eaten with thick bee hoon, laksa is a a bowl of noodles in a sweet & spicy broth. Normally accompanied with cockles, tau pok, beansprouts, prawns and fish cake.

5. Fishball Noodles

Fishball noodles is one of the most frequent dish that is eaten in Singapore. You may order it dry with chilli as per below photo or you may order it with soup. There are different types of noodles to choose from such as: Mee Pok (thick, flat yellow noodles), Mee Kia (thin, round yellow noodles), Kway Teow (flat, super thick white noodles), Bee Hoon (super thin noodles), Yellow Noodles etc.

6. Bah Chor Mee (Minced Pork Noodles)

There are 2 types of Bah Chor Mee in Singapore. One, similar to fishball noodles above, but with big lumps of minced pork on the noodles and braised mushrooms. Two, Bedok 85 Bah Chor Mee (below) which tastes better with the soup version. The soup is really sweet and together with thoroughly minced pork and pork balls, it's a delicious meal. Add a little chilli padi to spice things up.

7. Wanton Mee

Wanton Mee is one of my favourite dishes. Unlike those you find in Hong Kong, Singapore's version is is best eaten dry with chilli. Always eaten with mee kia (skinny noodles), a nice plate of wanton mee lies in the chilli used, the texture of the noodles, the wanton and the char siew. Most famous places make their own char siew and wanton. Some places like pontian wanton mee comes with fried wanton on top of the usual boiled wanton.

8. Lor Mee

Lor Mee is something very special. It is a bowl of noodles in a thick gooey soup base, accompanied by some pork, beansprouts, shredded chicken meat, fried fish, ngor hiang and half a braised boiled egg. Normally I would eat with bee hoon and yellow noodles. Adding vinegar, garlic and red cut chilli enhances the taste.

9. Ban Mian

Ban Mian is translated as board noodles because it is as flat as a plank. Normally made with pork bone and ikan bilis soup stock and topped with pork balls and some seafood.

10. Kway Chap

Kway Chap is a plate of braised pork organs (big/small intestines, pork belly, stomach, skin and liver) eaten together with a plate of flat white noodles.

11. Prawn Mee Soup

Prawn Mee Soup made famous by the Beach Road Prawn Mee stall. One tiger prawn sliced into halves, together with bee hoon/mee and some pork ribs. Prefer the soup version instead of the dry as the prawn soup is what makes the dish so tasty.

12. Economical Bee Hoon/Wu Xiang

Wu Xiang is one of the more expensive stuff to eat at a hawker centre. A few items could come up to be about $10. Popular items are the fried prawn crackers, the wrapped prawn roll and the century eggs. Some places have the pink sweet sauce, but it's mostly the peanut chilli sauce that people would enjoy dipping into. Normally eaten with a plate of bee hoon.

13. Satay Bee Hoon

A plate of bee hoon covered in satay sauce. Normally with shredded chicken, cuttlefish, cockles, beansprouts and vegetables

14. Beef Noodles

Beef noodles is a special dish that even though when you order it dry, it comes wet with a thick gooey sauce. You could choose a dish with just beef balls, or a mixture of succulent beef meat. Normally eaten with thick white bee hoon and some pickled vegetables to get rid of the beef smell. Add a dash of lime for added flavor.

15. Frog Leg Porridge

Frog Leg porridge is normally cooked with a dark sauce and dried chilli, a.k.a Gong Bao. That's the most popular. Normally the sauce would be poured over the porridge to make it more tasty. Frog leg basically tastes like chicken but it is more tasty.

16. Porridge with Fish Salad

There are many types of porridge (cuttlefish/fish/chicken) in Singapore. Personal favourite is the pork with century egg porridge. I would also order a plate of fish fillet. The fish fillet would be "drenched" with soy sauce, olive oil, spring onions, a dash of pepper, ginger and chilli padi.

17. Roasted delights (Roasted Chicken Rice, Duck Rice, Roast Pork, Char Siew)

Roasted delights are great food to indulge if you don't mind getting fat because these food would normally be very oily, but at the same time very delicious. A good roast pork would have a nice crisp but at the same time not taste dry. Char Siew would be roasted in a sweet sauce. Fatty parts would be the nicest because they literally melt in your mouth. Then we have roast duck which normally has a nicely roasted skin that crumbles in your mouth.

18. Hainanese Chicken Rice

One of the most famous dish in Singapore. One that has made Gordon Ramsay scratching his head on how to perfect it. A nice plate of chicken rice is really tender and the chilli is not too spicy but addictive at the same time. One most famous stall is Tian Tian Chicken Rice from Maxwell food market.

19. Mutton Soup

Mutton soup comes in 2 different types: Chinese and Indian.

Chinese one has the herbal smell and taste and uses ginger to get rid of the smelly mutton smell. Normally eaten with rice.

The Indian one normally comes in a thick brown broth that is sweet, topped with shallots. Normally comes with a bone marrow that you can use a straw to suck out with. Normally dipped and eaten with bread.

20. Popiah

Popiah is a popular dish made popular by peranakans. Popiah skin made from wheat flour is used to wrap a combination of sweet bean sauce, bean sprouts, lettuce leaves, egg, peanuts and the most important: finely grated steamed turnip.

21. Peking Duck

Peking Duck in Singapore and Peking Duck in Beijing is totally different. In Singapore, we have the skin wrapped up in a roll with a piece of spring onion/cucumber and dipped in a sweet sauce. Some places accompany it with crackers such as Asia Grand Restaurant.

22. Half Boiled Egg

A typical Singaporean breakfast normally would be kaya/butter toast with 2 half boiled eggs and a cup of coffee/tea. Most places offer it as a set meal. Normally dark soya sauce and pepper would be added and then mixed up and slurped down.

Can be found in most coffeeshops at the drinks stall.

23. Dim Sum

Hong Kong is where Dim Sum originate from. However in Dim Sum Singapore in singapore tastes very differently than those you find in HKG. We have a few Dim Sum places that are as delicious/if not more than those in Hong Kong. Places such as Swee Choon and 126 Wan Dou Sek are famous places which open through the night and people throng the place for dinner or for supper after a late night of partying.

24. Nissin Instant Noodles

Nissin has a few flavors of instant noodles that are only found in Singapore. Flavors such as laksa, black pepper crab and chilli crab are local delights. Infusing them with instant noodles is a stroke of genius for people who need a quick meal. Of course, instant noodles should be consumed in moderation.

Can be found in most convenient stores or supermarkets.

35. BBQ Stingray

This is really a delicacy as a piece of stingray is wrapped with banana leaf and barbecued over a pit to perfection with really awesome chilli. Really tender meat when cooked nicely

Seng's Wanton Noodles

There's a few wanton mee stalls at Dunman Food Centre and I used to patronize the one on the 2nd floor, Seng's Wanton Noodle. They use to be really popular to the point, each order waiting time could be up till 1 hour. However, the stall owner decided to pass the business down to his (I'm guessing) sons. While the waiting time has reduced, the quality of the dish has also dropped. Noodles tend to be lumped together and the overall dish tasted really salty. They definitely need to brush up their skills to maintain the standard.

Crowning The Best Pineapple Tarts

I was invited by the team at Pickat SG together with fellow food bloggers: SG Food on Foot, Keropokman, The Chosen Glutton and Miss TamChiak, to make the biggest decision of 2014's Chinese New Year (CNY). That is to crown the best Pineapple Tart of 2014.

Chinese New Year is not only the time for visiting relatives, it also a time to feast and enjoy each other's company. Popular snacks such as Bak Kwa, prawn rolls and sweets are the regular ones found in everyone's house which is of the same branding. But pineapple tarts are the ones that everyone have trouble buying because there are too many brands in the market. So Pickat SG decided to find out which was the best.

Before we did the tasting, dinner was catered for with a small buffet table. Food was catered by Neo Garden Catering (supposedly the number 1 caterer in Singapore)

Overall food was great and tasty. Special mention to the chicken curry which was thick and super tasty.

Then we "Lao Yu Sheng", which is a CNY tradition. We would toss the ingredients together and say auspicious things at the same time. It symbolizes receiving the good things in the new year. The higher you toss, the better it is.

After tossing and eating the Yu Sheng, it was down to the main task: Looking for the best among the rest. Tasting the 20 brands of pineapple tarts wasn't easy to say the least, especially after a buffet meal. Some were really sweet, some were really big and squarish. It sort of reminded me of my ramen competition which I had to down as many bowls as possible in 1 hour. Although there was no time limit for this, some pineapple tarts were really dry which made it difficult to swallow.

We gave scores for 5 criterias: Taste (Ta), texture (Te), fragrance (Fr), appearance (Ap), packaging (Pa) using 1(worst) to 5 (excellent) Anyway, introducing the 20 "contestants" and my personal verdicts:

Bak Kut Teh Places

I like to eat Bak Kut Teh, especially the herbal type. I also like the meat to be slightly fat. Recently I came across 3 Bak Kut Teh stalls so here's my short review.

Chanced upon this Bak Kut Teh stall in Kovan. There were many articles on their wall and I came to find out that this restaurant was actually opened by ex convicts. Here is my review of the place:

Preserved Vegetables

Comments: Tastes not bad. Not too overwhelming salty and easy to eat.

Bak Kut Teh

Comments: At first look I thought it would be peppery type but after tasting the soup, it turned out to be herbal type which was my favorite type. The meat is soft and separates from the bone easily. Soup is re-fillable so don't hesitate to top up.

Braised Pork Knuckle

Comments: One of my favorite dishes when eating Bak Kut Teh as one of my motto when eating is "if it's not fat, it ain't nice". Anyway I really loved the pork knuckle. The fat "melts" in your mouth as it's really soft. The meat is also tender and not overcooked. Would like a thicker sauce but overall still nice.

Pork Liver

Comments: The liver is quite soft and the soup is full of flavor. They probably did the liver in a different pot, because the smell and taste would probably kill the main soup taste.

Overall Review: Great place for Bak Kut Teh. Really tasty and fatty meat. They only accept cash.

2nd stall is the famous Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh. I have never tried the original stall before but I tried the branch at Tanjong Katong road and I did not like it. Here's my review of why I did not like it.

Comments: Peppery soup, with not much flavour. The meat was very tough too. Plus it was very small, with needing to constant top up the soup.

Comments: Very peppery soup. 4 pieces of pork ribs which is quite pathetic, cos it's bite size.

Braised Pig's Trotter $7

Comments: Fat enough and the meat is really tender. Has a great taste to it as the meat is full of flavour.

Comments: Looked very messy and the intestines were really quite skinny.

Mad For Garlic

Had some vouchers for this place, so decided to check it out. A place where every dish has garlic. So if you hate garlic, I suggest you stay away from this restaurant. If not, do check out this nice restaurant.

Garlic Bread Tower $12.50

Comments: A new and special type of garlic bread. Order it for its uniqueness. Firstly it will come as a tower, then the waiter will mash the special garlic spread with the bread inside. He will then slice it into 4 parts and you can tuck in. It has a nice taste, full of garlic with every bite. More garlic taste than butter taste.

Garlic Snowing Pizza $22.50

Comments: Really love the pizza. It is thin and has a slight sweet taste adding a twist to the normal fan favorite Hawaiian Pizza

Seafood Tomato Pasta $24.60

Comments: Didn't really like the pasta. The sauce was quite bland and had a weird spicy taste to it. Seafood was fresh though.

Overall Review: The dishes here are nice, but can be quite expensive. Did not really try many dishes but I would recommend the garlic snowing pizza.

Recently went to Buffet Town for dinner with some colleagues. I must say it has quite a wide spread of local and international food. I manage to try almost 90% of the food and most were quite up to standard. Don't want to make this into a super long post, so I'll just do a short commentary on some of the hits and misses.

Comments: HITS! Tempura was nice as it was straight out of the wok.

Comments: HIT! Marinated well, cooked well, taste well too.

Comments: Miss! Very tough.

Comments: HIT. Very tasty but makes you full easily.

Aglio Olio

Comments: MISS! Very dry and tasteless.

Ice Kachang

Comments: They provide the ice, you put your own syrup and all. Their atap chee was very hard.

Overall review: Compared to most other restaurants that sell buffet, this place for $42 on a weekend rate is quite worth it. The food is of good quality. The only thing I don't like is that you have to queue a long time for the oysters. But if you want it fresh, I guess good things come to those who wait.

Roland Restaurant

This post came a bit late. Went to Roland's restaurant for dinner on Mother's Day 2013. Ordered the set menu for 10 pax at $728++. Roland Restaurant' Mdm Cher is the founder of Chilli Crab in Singapore since 1956. Currently the restaurant is run by Roland Lim with his wife, his younger brother and youngest son.

Mother's Day Deluxe Combination

Comments: A mixture of prawn salad, ngoh hiang, longevity bun, lup cheong and 1 more which I can't remember what. A great way to start the dinner with all these food.

Braised Shark's Fin with Sea Treasures

Comments: I'm a supporter of "Stop Eating Shark's Fin" so I din taste the soup.

Steamed Live Goby

Comments: The fish was fresh and meat was tender. Soy sauce wasn't too salty

Peking Duck in Two Styles

Comments: Basically 2 styles means either u can wrap it or u can eat it on it's own. The duck skin is crisp and the meat is tender.

Scallop in Two Styles

Comments: Scallop on a yam ring and seared scallops with broccoli. Both taste awesome. I prefer the yam ring scallop more though

Braised Abalone & Sea Cucumber with Seasonal Vegetables

Comments: Abalone and sea cucumber always come together on a bed of vegetables. Both the abalone and sea cucumber was soft and not that chewy which was nice.

Fried Bun

Comments: "Man Tou" to dip into the Chilli crab sauce. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside

Chilli Crab

Comments: Being the originator of Chilli Crab, this is a must order when u come here. The crab is fresh and the meat is super sweet. The sauce is so nice that you just want to slurp it all up.

Fried Vermicelli

Comments: Actually the duck was suppose to be use to fry the fried rice. However, my dad decided to change to the fried vermicelli. It is very tasty and just right to end a 7 course meal. Taste not too salty

Suckling Pig

Comments: Additional order because my grandma loves suckling pig. It's not the best suckling pig I've eaten though. Was quite disappointed the pig came without legs as that was one of the nicer parts of the pig that I like.

Teochew Yam Paste with Pumpkin
Comments: Not too sweet not too sticky, it was nice.

Overall Review: After so many years, being the original founder of Chilli Crab, they still serve one of the best Chilli Crab in Singapore. Their mantou is also a must order with their chilli crab gravy. Overall food taste nice, they are also always very busy, so it's best to make a reservation.

Honeymoon Desserts

I'm not really a dessert type of person, but there's this one dessert stall in Vivocity that I really love to go to. Introducing Honeymoon Desserts. They come mainly from Hong Kong and they specialize in mainly "chinese" type of desserts. However these desserts come cold too, so it's good for a hot day too, especially these few days. Here are a few nice desserts.

Durian Pancake $4.80

Comments: Lovers of durian should really try this. Reminds me of durian Mooncake during mid autumn festival. They use the meat of the durian plus the pancake comes out cold so it gives the cool melting feeling in your mouth

Taro Sago $4.80

Comments: This tastes similar to those egg pudding serve in Hong Kong only that it includes taro and sago. Not very sweet but still enjoyable

Sago with Coconut Cream with Green Tea Ice Cream $5.80

Comments: This was a new item so I decided to give it a try. It comes with grass jelly and sago. The coconut taste is not that strong but overall the dessert is still tasty

Overall review: This place is always packed and there might be a queue, but fret not because the queue moves quite fast. After a long day, it's always nice to visit this place after dinner or after a long day in Vivo.

Serenity Spanish Bar & Restaurant

So I saw this promotion on Serenity's Roasted Suckling Pig, however when I got there, I was quite shock at how expensive it cost. In order not to waste the trip, me and my girlfriend decided to order something else.

Sangria De Original (White Wine) $16

Comments: A nice refreshing drink with its fruity flavor

Salteado De Setas $12.80

Comments: The mushrooms tasted not bad as an appetizer. But after eating too much of it plain, it gets boring.

Codillo De Cerdo $45.80

Comments: We decided to go for the pork knuckle. The dish is enough to feed 2. Crisp on the outside, soft and tender on the outside. Add some mustard and their chilli and it tastes really nice. Normally for German, they would give sauerkraut, but here they gave mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were nice too, to say the least. Overall it was a nice dish.

Overall Review: A place with really nice ambience, with live band playing nice music. Nice food and nice cocktails. However, I felt their prices were a bit on the high side. Maybe it's because of Vivocity's rental. However, the place was quite packed.

Ma La Guo @ Bugis Village

Hi readers, just wanna intro this stall to you all. It's Ma La Tang at Bugis Village. I dunno what is the exact address but it's right at the back near Queens Street. Beside this fruit drinks stall there's this small street and the stall is hidden in there.

Comments: I really love the spiciness of the dish. It may be overwhelming spicy for some people but not for me. You can choose the dishes you want. Personally I like things like crab meat, luncheon meat and cabbage.

But the "star" of the dish is actually the tang hoon. It is super delicious. Be careful when slurping the tang hoon, it's quite slippery so don't get choke.

Overall review: Do go eat this if you really like spicy ma la stuff. I recommend the dry one. Order a fried wok together with a bowl of rice and it is a comfortable dinner. It's not that expensive too, around $10 for a big wok full of ingredients.

Located in Sheraton Towers is this award-winning restaurant: Li Bai. They serve really good dim sum, however the pricing is a bit steep, considering its location to be in a 5-star hotel. Below are a few dishes ordered while I had lunch there with my family one afternoon.

Tapioca Chips

Comments: Their appetizer dish, nice crispy chips.

Foie Gras

Comments: Cooked really nicely. Melt in your mouth and nicely marinated.

Pork Bun With Crispy Skin 3 for $4.80

Comments: Comparable to Tim Ho Wan's bao, but theirs had more filling.

Steamed Chicken Feet in Special Sauce $4.20

Comments: Delicious, well marinated and cooked nicely. Has a sweet taste and melt in your mouth feeling when chewing on it.

Steamed Scallops Dumplings 3 for $6.60

Comments: Not bad, sweet tasting and nice.

Steamed Rice Rolls with Shrimp $6.80

Comments: The skin is silky smooth, the prawns are big and fresh. Could not ask for more.

Comments: Skip this, just go for the prawns, unless of course you prefer char siew

Comments: Quite oily and a bit burnt. A bit expensive at $12.

Comments: This was really nice. Worth the order. Crispy with nice fillings

Comments: Not bad, a favorite dish that's why we ordered it.

Steamed Crystal Dumplings with Mixed Vegetables $4.80

Comments: Did not really like it, maybe because the mixture of vegetable fillings was quite contrasting.

Steamed Chicken "Siew Mai" with Fish Roe 4 for $6.80

Comments: Normal. The scallop dumplings tasted better

Steamed Pork Ribs in Black Bean Sauce $4.20

Comments: The meat was quite tough. A bit disappointed

Deep-fried Crispy Scallop Rolls 3 for $6.60

Comments: This dish is REALLY REALLY REALLY NICE. A must order. Not expensive but JUST NICE!

Baked Canadian Cod with Ophiopogon Root and Honey $15

Comments: The dish is simply Amazing. The fish is cooked perfectly with that honey glazed taste. You don't even have to bite it. It just melts.

Braised Spinach Beancurd with Golden Mushrooms and Conpoy $8

Comments: So-so dish. Order only if you like beancurd

Tim Ho Wan

So there's this new Hong Kong restaurant in town. 1 Michelin star restaurant Tim Ho Wan made its way to Singapore and it's making waves. Queues form everyday without fail even before its opening time at 10 a.m.

I have never dined in a Michelin star restaurant before, and as a dim-sum lover, I decided to join the craze one Saturday morning to see what the craze was about. However, I would recommend everyone to NEVER EVER go on weekends (unless you feel REALLY free).

I thought the average wait was going to be around 2 hours. But to my surprise, I queue for almost 4.5 hours just to get a seat. Fortunately the food came fast, so here's my review:

Chilli Free-flow

Comments: So-So. Does not really taste special. Not spicy enough, not sweet enough.

"4 Heavenly Kings"

Char Siew Bao $4.50

Comments: The downside of going on a packed weekend, the filling was not done well. Read how nice the fillings of the char siew bao was going to be, but unfortunately it did not really meet my expectations.

Carrot Cake $4.50

Comments: This dish is passable. Soft and tender. However, there's not much ingredients in it and not as tasty as I expected it to be.

Steamed Egg Cake $3.80

Comments: Nothing special about this dish though. Taste fluffy but I'm just not use to the taste, but it's not that tasty to begin with.

Chee Cheong Fun with Pork Liver $5.50

Comments: This dish is something different from the usual chee cheong fun, but definitely not for people who don't like pork liver as the taste is quite strong. Sauce not tasty enough though but worth a try, that is if you like pork liver.

Steamed Dishes

Steamed Beef Ball $4.20

Comments: It was suppose to be a beef ball, but as you can see, due to the chefs being too busy, the balls turned out to be just a lump. But this beef ball is commendable. The meat is soft and it somehow feels like it will melt in your mouth. It's tasty too.

"Har Gao" Steamed Prawn Dumplings $5.50

Comments: The prawn was big but it was quite salty. Not the most delicious har gao I've eaten.

Steamed Pork Ribs $4.20

Comments: Not bad. However the meat was quite tough and not the tender melt-in-your-mouth type of dish.

Siew Mai $5

Comments: The siew mai was really nice. On first bite, the sweetness of the pork filling could be tasted straight away. I believe the red date added a touch of sweetness to the overall dish. A must order.

Steamed Chicken Feet $4

Comments: I've tasted better chicken feet. The chicken feet from Tim Ho Wan lacked marination and therefore lacked that special taste to keep going back for more.

Steamed Beancurd Skin $4

Comments: I quite like this dish. Just tasty and delicious, especially when it comes out piping hot.

Steamed Teochew Dumpling $4

Comments: Something like a crystal bun. The skin texture was nice. But the mixture of the filling is so-so. Very vegetarian type of dish.

Chee Cheong Fun with Beef $5.50

Comments: I could not taste the beef in it. Either they put a measly amount of beef or the beef just has no taste.

Chee Cheong Fun with Char Siew $5.50

Comments: The char siew cheong fun fared better than the other 2 cheong fun but it's also not very fantastic actually.

Rice Dishes

"Lor Mai Kai" Glutinous Rice $5

Comments: To be honest, I really like this dish. I normally do not order Glutinous Rice at all as it is very filling. BUT THIS IS A MUST TRY! The filling is very generous, with the well-marinated pork and mushroom bursting with taste once you sink your teeth into a mouthful of its sticky and delicious rice.

Steamed Rice with Pork Ribs and Chicken Feet $6.00

Comments: Basically it's the pork ribs and chicken feet on top of a bowl of rice. The sauce in the rice somehow made the rice the main star actually. I found myself eating more rice than I was suppose to.

Fried Items

Spring Roll $4.20

Comments: Nice crisp but the filling is not awesome. Try if you want, but it's not a must order.

Fried Beancurd $5.50

Osmanthus Cake $3.50 for a set of 3

Comments: A dessert commonly seen only eaten by emperors and dowagers. This dessert is really delicious. Sweetness is just nice. Texture is smooth. A refreshing dish to end a heavy dim sum meal.

Yam Paste with Sago $3.50

Comments: Tasted more like bobur chacha. Not bad as it's not your typical yam paste dessert.

Overall Review: I really don't know what the craze about Tim Ho Wan is all about. Probably because it received a Michelin Star. It's quite reasonable but the standard is just not there probably the place is too busy and they prepare in a rush. I've tasted better dim sum elsewhere. Would go back some time later just for their har gao and glutinous rice but the queue would turn me off. And they took take reservations

The Wagmeister $19

Comments: Eggs Benedict on a piece of meat and bread. This was a special dish during Easter period. The eggs were cooked nicely with the yolk able to flow freely once the knife drive into it. The sauce however is quite spicy. Love the fries. Use it to dip into the egg yolk.

Dippy Eggs & Soldiers $6

Comments: Soft boil egg with slightly toasted bread with bacon dipped in cheese. This dish is quite normal. The half boil egg is slightly over cooked, the bacon was also a bit burnt. Overall dish is so-so.

El Chorizo $16

Comments: The scrambled eggs were fluffy but slightly dry. The tuna was a bit tasteless to say the least.

Dessert of the week: Tiramisu $8

Comments: A different type of tiramisu. It's filled with egg "paste". Really filling. First few bites it tasted delicious, but after eating too much of it, I got slightly sick of the taste.

Overall review: A nice place to try out but the food is not that fantastic. Better suited to the western culture.

The paradise group have been making waves in Singapore with their chain of restaurants. Kungfu Paradise is one such restaurant that they own. A restaurant that offers Taiwanese food. Went to try some of their dishes at the Bugis+ outlet. Here is my review.

Original French Toast $3.20

Comments: Tastes better than Xin Wang's. The bread is toasted well on the outside to give that crunchy taste but is soft on the inside. The egg plus the butter on top make the whole dish really delicious.

Taiwan Sausage $4.20

Comments: Tasted normal. Nothing special. Prefer those from the "pasar malam". A bit oily though.

Liu Sha Bao $3.90

Comments: A nice liu sha bao has a free flowing inside and the photo below will show how good they made it.

Comments: The free flowing filling (I think is salted egg) is really nice. It's warm, sweet and salty taste mixes really well. Best to eat it warm.

Sweet and Sour Chicken Rice $8.90

Comments: Nice chunks of slightly fatty chicken pieces. Tasty sauce to accompany the meat. Quite delicious. Worth the order.

Poached Marble Beef with Korean Noodles $10.90

Comments: Really disappointed with this dish. It's just instant noodles with beef and sadly the beef was really tough. The lava egg was ok. The soup was just like those from packet noodles.

Overall Review: Overall food is affordable and nice. The staff at bugis+ offered great service. The place is also quite pack during meal time compared to other restaurants nearby.

Sushi Tei

There are many Japanese food chains in Singapore. Sushi Tei ranks as one of those at the top for me. Their dishes are different and really fresh. They also have seasonal menus which brings out creativity from their chefs from different outlets.These are some of the dishes ordered when me and some friends went to Sushi Tei.

Salmon Belly $8

Comments: Salmon belly tastes better than normal salmon sashimi. In fact most fish bellies taste more delicious, i.e Tuna, yellowtail. It may also cost slightly more expensive. Whenever I order bellies in Japanese restaurant, I would always request for the fatty parts as it contains all that juice and the fish will literally melt in your mouth. Don't worry as it's all omega vitamins.

Zuwai Gani Chawanmushi $6.50

Comments: Crabmeat with Chawanmushi. This dish is not bad.

Ikura Chawanmushi $7.80

Comments: Ikura, also known as salmon roe is one of the most important in the Japanese Cuisine. This dish is for people who love Chawanmushi and Ikura as it is a dream combo having both as a dish.

Comments: Did not really like the taste of this dish as the sweetness of the mango did not compliment the

Hotate Mentai $9.80

Comments: Scallop covered with mentai mayo. Really delicious. Do try it. May be a little bit salty for some.

Kaisen Kaminabe $16.80

Comments: As you can see, the ingredients are really fresh. Boiled to cook with their tasty miso soup. Really good if it's on a rainy day. Don't forget to ask for refill of soup :)

Cha Soba $8.50

Comments: I always love cha soba above all other types of noodles as it is really healthy and tasty. I have a habit of adding a little wasabi in the soy sauce when eating cha soba. The correct way to eat it is to dip the green tea noodles in to the sauce and slurp it up from there.

Teriyaki Chicken

Comments: Tender chicken on a bed of rice. Didn't taste much of the dish as it was ordered by my friend. But a nice dish overall.

Overall Review: Delicious and innovative Japanese food. Do try their seasonal menu if you have the chance.

Located at the basement of Ngee Ann City is this small restaurant called Domani that sells Spanish and Italian Cuisine food. It's a really small restaurant, therefore during meal times, there may be a queue. The place is cosy with a nice ambience due to it's dark interior. The food is not that expensive too and it's quite nice. Below is a short review on the food.

Fritto Calamari $6

Comments: The batter was nice with its slight crisp on it. Not sure if their tar-tar sauce was home made, but it complimented the calamari well. If only they added a bit of their crispy crumbs.

Bruschetta Salmon

Comments: Part of the set meal, ordered the Bruschetta Salmon. Poorly done though. Just a piece of salmon on a baguette with butter.

Ajillo Shrimp $5

Comments: A type of Spanish appetizer. Fresh shrimp topped with a little chilli powder with button mushrooms soaked in olive oil and garlic. It's a refreshing dish as it perks up your pallets. The shrimp is cooked just nice and taste sweet.

Iberico Pork and Cream Tomato Shrimp Spaghetti $26.90 meal with the Bruschetta Salmon

Comments: A combination of 2 main meals. Firstly, the pork is really nice. Cooked nicely with a little bit of fat. The sauce not too salty
The spaghetti was not bad too with it's freshly made tomato sauce and fresh prawns. Spaghetti cooked nicely.

Overall Review: A nice place to have dinner, but the staff there can be quite slow and un-attentive. The food is nice as it is a fusion of Italian and Spanish dishes. Not many places in Singapore sell Spanish food too. The pricing is also not as expensive although it is located in the town area.

As a roast pork lover, I was intrigued to try out this place when I saw a picture of their roast pork on their menu. The review is below. Also found out that this place is also mostly Taiwan food therefore went to try it out. Have a read below on the dishes I had. Sorry I don't have most of the prices for the dish because I misplaced the receipt and their website is quite lousy because their menu do not have the prices to the dish and they do not have pictures of their dishes.

Village Tofu

Comments: The starch is slightly salty and thick but you can't go wrong with tofu. It still taste nice but the portion is quite small. Serving it in a claypot also keeps the dish warm.

Fried Glass Noodles

Comments: Quite a refreshing and nice dish. Easy to eat but not much ingredients in it.

Oyster Mee Sua $8.90

Comments: Quite salty and not quite the same as those in Taiwan. A very small portion for $8.90. Not worth it

Guitar Duck and Roast Pork Combo

Comments: The meat is slightly fat, moist but the skin of both the duck and the pork could be more crispy.

Crispy Duck Roll

Comments: This is quite good although could be quite filling. The duck inside is moist and soft and the roll is crisp.

Prawn Paste Chicken

Comments: Normal. Chicken was quite tender

Lemon Sliced Fish

Comments: The fish was fresh and the lemon gives a nice citrus taste to the dish.

Overall Review: In all honesty, this place is a nice cosy place to have dinner, but the downside of having it in ION Orchard means that during dinner time there would be this never-ending queue, plus the dishes would be expensive and their serving really small. The food is not that fantastic to die for also. There are other places that money could be more well spent. Their website is also not done up properly. So I'm not really gonna recommend this place to my readers out there.

Came across this place first with my friend when the friendly door hostess pulled me and my friend in to have a look. Went with girlfriend on a separate occasion to have dinner and here's my review.

Ordered the set meal at $58 for 2

Salad as part of the menu. Not bad.

Their Garlic Rice which tastes extremely delicious. I guess they can't really go wrong with garlic fried rice. Not too oily but very fragrant.

The BBQ pit which provides a smokeless environment so you won't have the BBQ smell on your clothings.

The mushrooms that will never get cooked no matter how long you put it on the BBQ. The brown ones gets cooked if put directly on top of the BBQ, but the other 2 with the aluminium can't cook

Scallop Mentaiko

Comments: Scallop cooked nicely and not too salty compared to other scallop mentaiko I've eaten

Assortment of Meat.

Comments: A nice assortment of different type of meats.The meats were fresh and marinated well. Very tasty and when cooked properly just melts in your mouth.

Overall Review: A nice and cosy place for dinner, won't feel smelly due to the bbq smell. The price could be a bit steep for 2 people. It's best to go in a group to share the cost. On certain days they have special events too. You could like their Facebook page below for more info.
