Create an Abstract Wallpaper

There are plenty of ways to create a Watercolor Effect in Photoshop. Some are very cheesy and you can easily tell that a simple filter has been used. In this tutorial, we will be using Layer Masking. It is one of the most fascinating and powerful Photoshop method, to use layer masks in your designs.

Here's a Preview of what we are going to make:

Step 1-

Let us start off by creating a canvas of 1920X1200 pixels, in RGB mode. I found a picture of Jim Morrison (you can obviously use any of your favourite characters, or your own picture for that matter). Copy and paste the image into our canvas. Use transform and scale it to fit our canvas by holding down the Shift-Key. This keeps the original aspect ratio of the image and it does not look stretched.

Step 2-

Even though the picture I am using here is a small resolution one, it will not matter much since I will be using some filters that will remove any sort of pixelation. Adjust Brightness/Contrast and then duplicate the layer.

Step 3-

Apply Watercolor filter from filter gallery to the duplicated layer. Name this duplicated layer as Watercolor Filter.

Step 4-

Select the original layer and NOT the Watercolor Filter. Go to Image > Adjustments > Threshold. Name this original layer as Threshold Effect.

Step 5-

Set the Blending mode to Multiply, and merge both, Watercolor Filter and Threshold Effect layers. So, we now have a Merged Layer.

Step 6-

Now open some images I took from the Media Militia Sampler Pack, download it here.

Step 7-

Get to the Merged Layer. Select and copy the image into the layer. Add a Layer Mask to Layer 1. Alt + click on the layer mask, and you will see the canvas is in white. Paste the image here, and Ctrl + I to invert the colors. This way, the layer mask hides the Blacks, and reveals the Whites. Click back onto the layer and we can see our image.

Step 8-

Use some paper textures. Set it to Linear Burn mode.

Step 9-

Clone some areas in the Layer 1 using the Clone Tool. This makes the image look more complete.

Exloding Planet (Fire Effect)

In this tutorial, I would make an exploding planet with the help of "Dried Mud" image. This is a very simple tutorial. I am using this image

And will make it like this.

So lets start.

Step 1-

First of all open your image in photoshop.

Step 2-

Now, we will invert image so that explosion effects looks more effective.
Go to Image > Adjustment > Invert or simply press the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + I

Now select Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) and make a circle in the center of image, don't forget to press and hold Shift while making a circle, as it will make it perfect.

Step 3-

Now go to Select > Inverse or simply right click and click on Select Inverse and then press Delete.

Step 4-

Now again select inverse to select the circle. Then go to Filter > Distort > Spherize, select amount to 100%. Then do it again by taking 50% this time. And the press Ctrl + D to deselect. After that fill the background with black color.
Then go to Layer > Flatten Image.
And then go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask.
Amount: 500%.
Radius: 1.7px.
Threshold: 122 levels

Step 5-

Go to Filter > Distort > Polar Co-ordinates.
Options: Polar to Rectangular.

Go to: Image > Rotate Canvas > 90CW.

Apply: Filter > Stylize > Wind
Method: Wind. Direction: From the right. Hit CTRL + F to reapply.

Go to: Image > Rotate Canvas > 90CCW.

Finally, apply Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates.
Options: Rectangular to Polar.

Step 6-

Now the last step is to play with colors. Either go to Image > Hue and Saturation, or Image > Color Balance. Try and try until you get this. And its done.

How to make a person bald!

This is kind of funny tutorial, but very interesting. How to make a person bald like this.

To this.

So lets get started

Step 1-

Fist open the image of the person you want to make bald.

Step 2-

Now zoom at the hairs because you need to select them.

Select them either using Pen Tool (Best Option) or using Magnetic Lasso Tool (Be careful during selecting using this tool because it is dependent on colors)

Step 3-

I have used Pen Tool

Step 4-

Now press Ctrl + J (Shortcut for copying the selection into different layer) and paste it on a new layer i.e. "Layer 1". Then hide the duplicate layer.

Select the background layer.

Step 5-

Now select the Clone Stamp Tool

Now choose a point like I've choosen in the image and do Alt + Click over there and start using Clone Stamp Tool over the hairs.

I've cloned the hairs, as you can see in the image.

Step 6-

Now again make the duplicate layer visible.

Now you have to do selection again, but this time do it inside the hairline as the selection will be the bald scalp, so it has to be inside hairline only.

Step 7-

Now press Ctrl + Alt + I (to invert the colors, but you must be on the duplicate layer) and then press Delete

And your image will look like this. The hairs are removed little bit and rest will become scalp. Press Ctrl + D to deselect.

Step 8-

Now, select Spot Healing Tool (J).

Select pixels from forehead by doing Alt + Click to reduce the remaning hairs into sclap.

And it will look like this. Remember one thing, do it slowly or you will ruin it and your efforts will be wasted.

Step 9-

Now, select Sharpen Tool (R)

Now use it over your image so that it looks like the person has very small hairs.

Step 10-

Now make a selection of scalp as shown in the image below. After that press Ctrl + J again to duplicate the layer.

Now place Layer 2 below Layer 1 like this.

Step 11-

Now click on the foreground to select a color.

Select the skin color as shown in the image and click OK.

And the foregound color will become this.

Step 12-

Now, go to Edit > Fill.

Make Use to Foreground Color and click OK.

And the Foreground color is filled.

Step 13-

In the next step go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise.

Now do the settings as shown below and press OK. After that press Ctrl + D

Step 14-

Now make a new layer (shortcut Ctrl + Shift + N) and place it between Layer 1 and Layer 2.

Now set the foreground color to White

Step 15-

Now select Brush Tool (B). (You can make the brush smaller by using "[" button and bigger by using "]" button)

Now just click once or twice on the right side because light is coming from right side. It will add some shine to your scalp.

And its done. He's Bald Now. [:P]

Create an Ice Effect in text!

In this tutorial, I will teach you how to create an ice effect in text. Its a very cool effect and looks really nice.(click to enlarge)

So lets get started

Step 1-

First of all open photoshop and create a new document of size 1024 x 768. Double click on the layer and open its lock. After that double click on it again and from there go to gradient overlay. Gradient settings - #0001e #00649b #000533 as colors and make a linear gradient like this.

Step 2-

Now, write something there like I wrote "Ice" with Font as Arial and Color as Black. After that right click on the layer and Rasterize it. Then go to Filter > Liquify and use the Wrap Tool to edit the text and make it somewhat like this.

Step 3-

Now, keeping black and white as your foreground and background color go to Filter > Render > Clouds and again go to Edit > Stroke. Set the Width to 5px, Color to Black, Location to Inside and leave the rest of the settings to default. Then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 8px and hit ok. Your image will look somewhat like this.

Step 4-

Now, make a copy of text layer and hide it. Then select the Duplicate Layer and go to Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap and apply these settings
Highlights : 15,
Details : 1,
Smoothness : 15
and press ok, now make the original text layer visible, then go to Filter > Sketch > Chrome and apply these settings
Details Value : 0 ,
Smoothness : 10
then change the Blending Mode of both layer to Overlay.
And you will get image like this.

Step 5-

Now, merge both layers(if its Blend Mode changes back to Normal then change it back to Overlay) and duplicate the combined layer and set its Opacity to 50%. Again merge the layers and duplicate it. Now select the duplicate layer and go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical and place it under the origial text like this.

Step 6-

Now, put a Vector Mask on the flipped layer and press "D" (for changing the foreground and background color to black and white). Then put black at the top and chose Gradient Tool. Choose the first option in types of gradient i.e. linear black and white. Then apply the gradient on the image and make it like this and you are done

Smokey Effect

In this tutorial I will teach you how to create a smokey effect like this (Click to enlarge)

So lets get started.

Step 1-

First of all open photoshop and create a new document with dimensions 1920x1200 pixels. After that apply a gradient by double clicking on Layer Palette and choosing Gradient Overlay. Select Radial for the Style and #07090a - #202b35 as the colors.

Step 2-

Now, add some text in white color and then go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur using 90º for the Angle, and 40 pixels for the Distance.

Step 3-

Then, go to Filter > Distort > Wave. Use 3 for the Number of Generators, 10 and 346 for the Wavelength, and 5 and 35 for the Amplitude. (Click to enlarge)

Step 4-

Now to add some light effects which will make your image look really nice. For this go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Use 9.3 pixels for the Radius. After that group the layers and change the folder's Blend Mode to Color Dodge.

Step 5-

Now create a new layer on top of the other layers and then go to Filter > Render > Clouds, before that make sure you have black and white for the background and foreground colors, and then change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. After that go to Layer > Layer Mask >Reveal All, and with a very soft brush, 0% hardness and black color, then hide some areas of the clouds layer like I've done in the image given below.

Step 6-

Now, create a new Folder on the Layers Palette. Change the folder's Blend Mode to Color Dodge and add a new layer in it. After that use the Smoke Brushes(if you have, otherwise download it). Then select white for the color and paint over some letters. Click the brush twice, if you think that the brush is little brighter.

Step 7-

Now you have to paint more smokes just like in this image

Step 8-

After doing all that create a new layer beneath all the other layers but in front of the Background layer. Then fill this layer with black and go to Filter > Texture > Texturizer. Use 100% for the Scaling and 4 for the Relief. And for the Texture use Canvas and Light use Top and it will add a nice texture to the image but you have to change its opacity to 10%.

Step 9-

Well this is a new feature in the new Photoshop CS4, which is very useful because you can edit all the image adjustments like Levels, Hue & Saturation, Curves in Adjustments palette. But it just adds a Adjustment Layer, that could be done in the previous versions too. Now, on top of the other layers just add the Invert adjustment. And then go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Invert. It will be the same. By doing this you will get a very cool burning effect

And you are done

Create Michael Jackson Wallpaper!

In this tutorial I'll create Michael Jackson's wallpaper. This is a very easy tutorial and I hope that you will like it.
This is what you will get after finishing this tutorial(Click to open in new window)

So lets start this tutorial

Step 1-

First of all open a new doucment with canvas size 1900 x 1200 px. Now apply a Double Click on the layer and apply Gradient Overlay. Switch to Radial Style and use #101213 and #253239 as the colors and also increase the scale to 141%

And you'll get this.

Step 2-

Now open MJ's picture. With the help of Pen Tool(P) or Polygonal Lasso Tool(L) select MJ and extract from background.

Step 3-

Now place MJ into the center of image and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and use 2.0 for the Radius.

Step 4-

Next step is to go to Image > Adjustments > Hue and Saturation and reduce the Saturation to -100. After doing this go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Then increase the Black Input to 140 and the White to 212.

Step 5-

Now select the Ellipse Tool (U) and create an ellipse like the image below, then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and use 90 pixels for the Radius. After that create another ellipse and repeat the Gaussian Blur, this time use 20 pixels for the Radius. Group these 2 ellipses and then change the Blend Mode of the group to Color Dodge.

Step 6-

Select the Pen Tool (P) and create the spot light like given in the image below, then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Use 80 pixels for the Radius and change the Blend Mode to Overlay then duplicate this layer 2 times and you will have 3 layers.

Step 7-

Again select the Pen Tool (P) and create another triangle like the image below just for make light brighter towards the top and middle. Then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and use 80 pixels for the Radius. Also add another layer and then with the Brush Tool (B), use a big round brush with white for the color and paint a spot of light at the top. After that group these 2 layers and change the Blend Mode of the group to Color Dodge.

Now all we need is sparks. For creating sparks we will use Brush Engine.
Add a new layer and set white as the Foreground Color and follow the images below.

After doing that you'll get something like this

Step 8-

After all that add another layer on top of the other layers and go to Filter > Render > Clouds and make sure that you have black and white for the background and foreground colors. Then, change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. After that select the Eraser Tool (E) and then select a big soft brush and start deleting the layer just leave just some very small areas close to the lights.

Step 9-

Now the final step, select the MJ layer and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. After that with the Pen Tool (P) create a black triange to use as the MJ shadow. Then select the Eraser Tool (E) and delete the end with a very soft brush, also you will have to duplicate the MJ layer and change the Blend Mode to Normal and then delete the rest of the layer but don't forget to leave the feet. We have to that because with the Color Dodge Blend Mode the black becomes transparent so MJ's shoes wouldn't appear.

Splash Water Effect!

This tutorial is for teaching you how to create a splashy water effect in photoshop. Here is the final image

Step 1-

First of all open a new image with following attributes:

Width : 20 inch

Height : 20 inch

Background Color : White

Now, select Type Tool and then open Character Palette and apply the following settings

Note : Color - #666666

Step 2-

Now type a word (any word)

Now go to Layer Palette and Right Click on layer and click on Rasterize Layer. After that add some additional dots which have the same color i.e. #666666 like this

Step 3-

Now go to Channel Palette and copy Blue Channel and then go to Image > Adjustments > Invert (Shortcut - Ctrl + i)

Go to Filter > Blur > Guassian Blue. First blue with a radius of 15 px and then again with 15 px.

Step 4-

Now turn on all the layers by clicking the eye on their left and turn off the Blue copy layer but don't delete it.

Then go to Filter > Render > Lightning Effects. Set it up as show in the image below and yes, be sure to select that Blue copy layer as Texture Channel

And your image will look like this

Step 5-

Now duplicate the text layer and go to Filter > Sketch > Chrome and set up things as show in the image below

Step 6-

Open the Layer Styles dialog box and select Bevel and Emboss and apply the following settings keeping the Shadow Color - #666666

Make sure the Gloss Contour is changed to cone and click on Ok
And your image will look like this

Step 7-

Now make a Curves Adjustment Layer and Levels Adjustment Layer and applying the following settings

And a black shining layer will come just like this

Step 8-

Now turn off the Background Layer and merge all other layers together.

To give an additional liquid effect go to Filter > Liquify. Use the Bloat Tool to expand or warp the areas as you can see in this image. Once you are satisfied with your result, click Ok.

Step 9-

Now your text is ready to put in any picture you want to put. I did it like this

Explosion Effect!

Here is an awesome effect for you guys which will make your image look outstanding and very cool. Just follow the steps and make a beautiful image like this.

Step 1-

First of all open your image(s). I'm using these two images for creating this effect.

Step 2-

Open City Image and then go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer and check on Colorize and apply the following settings

After that go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels and apply these settings

And your image will look like this

Step 2-

Then create a new layer (shortcut - Ctrl + Shift + N) and set the foreground color to #FFFFFF and background color to #000000 and then go to Filter > Render > Clouds. Set Blend Mode of this layer to Multiply.

Step 3-

Go to Filter > Liquify. Then select Bloat Tool and apply the following settings :

Size - 600px
Density - 50
Pressure - 50
Rate - 80
Turbulent Jilter - 50

And make it like this by clicking once or twice at the center of the city.

Step 4-

Select the person or thing around which you want to show explosion effect and place it at the center of the image like I placed here

Step 5-

Now duplicate this layer and go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation and set its Lightness to 0. Rearrange this layer and position it under the original layer and then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with 3px and rescale to the shape as shown in the diagram.

Step 6-

Create a new layer between the object and the city layer.
Then use Ellipse tool to draw a circular path. After that go to Edit > Transform Path > Rotate to turn the path at 45 degrees.
Use Direct Selection tool to adjust the path as shown in the diagram.

Then select the layer created and go to Filter > Render > Clouds.
Then go to Filter > Liquify. With the same settings in Step 3, left-click and hold on at the center of the clouds. Release the mouse when you got something similar to this.

Now, go to Path tab to find the path you created earlier in this step. Ctrl+left click on the path to load selection. Come back to Layers tab, select the bloated clouds and set a layer mask with the selection. Then using a Soft Brush Tool with size 300 and color #000000, paint the bottom border of layer mask and get something like this.

Then set the Blend Mode to Soft Light

Step 7-

You can highlights by creating a new layer on top of bloated clouds created in previous step and then repeating same procedure as we did in the previous step. Now set the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. Now, go to Image > Adjustments > Auto Levels to enhance the highlights.

And its done.

Glow Effect!

Here's an interesting effect which will make your image look magical. It is a bit difficult from other photoshop effects, but a lot of practice on photoshop will make it easy for you. So lets get started with this effect. Here's a preview

Step 1-

First of all open your image and choose Pen Tool (P) and create a spiral path like I have made on this image like this

Step 2-

After that create a new layer and then select Brush Tool (B) and apply these settings as show in the image below

After applying these settings, set your foreground color to white. Then with your path still on the artwork, go back to the Pen Tool, right click on the canvas, and choose "Stroke Path" and a menu will appear with the Brush set as the Tool. Check "Simulate Pressure" and press OK.

Step 3-

Now you need to delete the parts which you want to hide. For hiding them choose Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) to select the area you want to hide.

After selecting press Delete and that part will be deleted and it will appear as if it is hidden behind that arm. And it will look like this

Step 4-

Then double click on the layer and apply these settings for Outer Glow

And these for Inner Glow

Step 5-

Now to make the sparkles. Choose Brush Tool and make spots around your glowing path with brush size varying between 3px-5px.

Step 6-

Now to make it more glowing make another path around your glowing path but don't make it same, make it a bit different from your previous path. Take a small brush this time and stroke your path with 50% opacity.

After that go to Hue Saturation in layer palette and try to make it more bluish.

Step 7-

Now the last part of this effect is to add one more layer of shimmer. Hold Ctrl and click on the main stroked path layer in the layers palette and your path will get selected.Go to Select › Modify › and Expand the selection by 7px, then feather it by 10px.

Step 8-

Now select your background photo layer and apply a Plastic Wrap filter, which is in your Artistic filters. This will add some wispy lines around your path. After that set the Highlight Strength to 20, the Detail to 6, and the Smoothness to 8. Finally, lightly Gaussian Blur your background layer with the feathered selection still active.
And its Done!

How to Create Stylish Icon/Button

Well you must have seen such icons or buttons which look very stylish and cool. In this tutorial I am going to tell you how to create stylish icons or you can say button like this

They are very easy to make. So lets start it.
Note : I will use (U) for telling the shortcuts.

Step 1-

First of all open a new document of size 400*400 (Ctrl + N). Use Rulers (Ctrl + R) in this case and change them to Percentage scale by right clicking on it. Then select Ellipse tool (U) and start from 10%,10% (x,y) to 90%,90% like this.

Step 2-

After that double click on Ellipse Layer so formed and select Gradient option and do settings like this (Click to enlarge this image if you can't see the settings)

Press Ok. And it will look like this

Step 3-

After that again select Ellipse Tool and make a circle starting from 14%,14% to 86%,86% and fill it with green color using Paint Bucket Tool (G) and it will look like this.

Step 4-

I know it doesn't look like a button, but just wait it will look like a button soon.
Now select some of the portion of that Ellipse using Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) like this

Then select and use Dodge Tool (O) keeping this settings (Brush: 60px, Range : Midtones, Exposure: 50%) and it will look like this

Step 5-

Then again select and use Marquee Tool and right click on the selection and select Select Inverse option. After that select Burn Tool (O) keeping this settings (Brush: 60px, Range : Midtones, Exposure: 50%).
Then Deselect (Ctrl + D) everything.
And it will look like this

Step 6-

Now we are finally there. Now Stroke the current layer by right clicking on the layer and keeping these settings (Click to enlarge this image if you can't see the settings)

Now make a shape on it like I did (I stroked it also, but its an option for you) like this

Step 7-

Now give Drop Shadow Effect by double clicking on that 'shape' layer and applying these settings (Click to enlarge this image if you can't see the settings)

And it will look like this

And its done!

Extra

Well if you want to try something different, then see this.
First of all merge all layers and then select Free Transform (Ctrl + T) and then right click on it and select Distort option.
After that move it to get your desired shape and then duplicate the layer. I did like this

Give your photograph an Antique Look

In this tutorial I will teach you how to give an Antique Look to your photograph.
This is a very simple tutorial, so lets get started. I'm using this photograph

To this

Step 1-

First of all open your photograph.
And then unblock the photo layer by double click on it and after that press OK.
After that go to Filter > Noise > Dust and Scratches. Set the Radius to 2 and Threshold 0.

Step 2-

After that duplicate the photo layer. Select duplicated photo layer, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set Radius to 4.

Step 3-

After that make a Layer Mask on the duplicated layer. On the mask, create a Radial Gradient as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 4-

After that Download "Vintage Background". Resize it to cover the photograph nicely. Go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.
I'm using this one.

And then set the Blend Mode of vintage background to Soft Light.

Step 5-

After that Download "Grunge Background". Resize it to cover the photograph nicely. Go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.
I'm using this one.

And then set the Blend Mode of grunge background to Multiply.

Step 6-

Then, go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness and Contrast. Set the Brightness to 50. And create a Levels Adjustment Layer. Set the values to 15, 1.48, 255.

Step 7-

And the last step is to create a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. Check on Colorize. Set the Hue to 38, Saturation to 22 and Lightness to 0 and its done!

Water Effect

In this tutorial I will teach you how to make water effect.

Step 1-

Make a new layer in 400*400 and restore the backgroundcolors by hitting "D"

Step 2-

Go to Filter > Render > Clouds

Step 3-

Go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur. Apply the following settings:

Step 4-

Then go to Filters > Blur > Gaussion Blur. Set the Radius to 2 pixels.

Step 5-

Now go to Filter > Sketch > Bas Relief and use this settings:

And your image will be looking like this

Step 6-

Then go to Filter > Sketch > Crome and apply this settings:

And your image will be looking like this

Step 7-

Now it's time to add some color to your water. You can choose whichever colours you like to, but I've chosen this ones. Click at Ctrl+U or just go to Image > Adjust > Hue/Saturation. Here are the settings:

Folding Paper Effect

In this tutorial I will teach you how to create a folding paper effect.

Make sure you have two layers one with the image you have taken and your background layer. Change the background layer color to #c0c0c0.

Step 1-

Select whole of the image by pressing the shortcut i.e. ctrl + A.

Step 2-

Click on the Polygonal Lasso Tool folder and select subtract from selection option.

Subtract from your selection using the polygonal lasso tool as shown.

Then

Now click on Delete

Step 3-

Now Right Click on the selection and select Transform Selection and then place it like this.

Step 4-

At this point your selection should look like the image on the right. Create a new layer, Click on the Gradient Tool usually hiding behind the paint bucket tool and apply the setting below.

color:#73726d — color:#FFFFFF — color:#9f9fa1 — color:#9f9fa1

Step 5-

Apply the gradient from top going down to the point of your selection as shown in the image below. The

Step 6-

Still on the same layer and with your selection still selected click on the Elliptical Marquee Tool select subtract from selection option and subtract from your selection to get the curve as shown below.

Step 7-

Still on the same layer we need to create another curve on the left hand side of the paper. Click on the Elliptical Marquee Tool select the subtract from selection option and subtract from the selection shown below.

Then again click on Delete

Step 8-

Now right click on the fold layer, click Blending Options, and add the setting below.

Click on OK.
And you are finished.

How to Change Hair Colour

So lets start with a simple exercise.
In this tutorial I will teach you how to change hair color.
It is a very simple technique, so lets do it.

Original Image	After Changing Hair Color

Step 1-

First of all open the image. For opening :-
File>Open>(browse it)>Open.

Step 2-

Now unblock the layer. For unblocking :-
Double click on the layer and press OK(Change name of layer if you want to).

Step 3-

Now select lasso tool(or Polygonal Lasso Tool orMagnetic Lasso Tool, whichever is more compatible according to you).
After selecting it, make your selection of hairs like this :-

Step 4-

After making your selection, go to :-
Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color.
After opening it a box will appear. Change the name if you want to and after that change the mode to Soft Light and click OK.
Then choose your color from the list and press OK.

Done

And its done.

Layers

Layers let you organize your work into distinct levels that can be edited and viewed as individual units. Every Photoshop CS4 document contains at least one layer. Creating multiple layers lets you easily control how your artwork is printed, displayed, and edited. You will use the Layers palette often while creating a document, so it is crucial to understand what it does and how to use it.

Layer Visibility	- The eye shows that the selected layer is visible. Click on or off to see or to hide a layer.
Layer Locking Options	- Click the checkered square icon to lock Transparency; click the brush icon to lock the Image; click the arrow icon to lock the Position; click the lock icon to lock all options.
Layer Blending Mode	- Defines how the layer’s pixels blend with underlying pixels in the image. By choosing a particular blending mode from the dropdown menu you can create a variety of special effects.
Fill	- By typing in a value or dragging the slider you can specify the transparency of the Fig. 6. Layers Palette color of the image or object.
Opacity	- By typing in a value or dragging a slider you can specify the transparency of the entire layer.
Layer Lock	- The icon shows when the layer is locked and disappears when it is unlocked. Double-click the icon to unlock the layer.
Layer Options Menu	- Click the black triangle to see the following options: New Layer, Duplicate Layer, Delete Layer, Layer Properties, etc. Some of the options are presented as icons at the bottom of the Layers palette.
Link Layers	- Can be used to link layers together.
Layer Styles	- If a layer has a style, an “F” icon shows at the bottom of the Layers palette. Click the little black triangle to see style options.
Layer Mask	- A grayscale image, with parts painted in black hidden, parts painted in white showing, and parts painted in gray shades showing in various levels of transparency.
Layer Set	- This option helps to organize images with multiple layers. Click the icon to create a folder for several layers.
Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer	- Have the same opacity and blending mode options as image layers and can be rearranged, deleted, hidden, and duplicated in the same manner as image layers. Click the icon and select an option to create a new fill or adjustment layer.
Create New Layer	- Click this icon to create a new layer.
Delete Layer	- To delete a layer, select a layer in the Layers palette and drag it to the trash can icon; or, select a layer and click the icon.

Selection Tools

Marquee
	Selects an object by drawing a rectangle or an ellipse around it. Click the tool button, choose a rectangular or an elliptical marquee. Drag the marquee over the area of the image you wish to select.
Lasso
	Selects an object by drawing a freehand border around it. Click the tool button, drag to draw a freehand border around the are of the image you wish to select.
Polygon Lasso
	Selects an object by drawing a straight-edge border around it. Click the tool button, click on the starting point on the image, drag to draw a straight-edge border, click and drag again to select the are of the image you wish to select. Double-click to finish.
Magnetic Lasso
	Selects an object by drawing a border that snaps to the edges of the defined area of the object. Click on the starting point on the image, drag around the are of the image. The tool will make fastening points at the edges. To finish selecting, drag the border to the starting point and click precisely in the point.
Magic Wand
	Selects all objects in a document with the same or similar fill color, stroke weight, stroke color, opacity, or blending mode. By specifying the color range, or tolerance, you can control what the Magic Wand tool selects.
Crop
	Click the tool button, then click on the area of the image you wish to select. Selects and cuts parts of an image. Click the tool button, then click and drag the tool over the part of the image that you want to keep. Resize the selected area dragging the squares at the sides and corners. Click the RETURN key when your crop box is sized correctly.
Slice
	Used to cut images into slices, which can be exported to a web page.

Alteration Tools

Healing Brush
	Corrects small blemishes in scanned photos. Select the tool, hold down the ALT key and left-click on the base color you need to heal. Then left-click over the blemish.
Brush Tool
	Draws lines of different thicknesses and colors. Select the tool. Then click on the selected area, drag to draw lines. Use the Options bar to change the Brush, Mode, Opacity, and Flow.
Clone Stamp
	Takes a sample of an image and applies over another image, or a part of the same image. Select the tool. Hold down the ALT key and left-click on a certain point of the document where you want to start your copy point. Then, put your mouse over whatever part of the new document you want the picture to go to. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse across the page to copy the picture.
Art History Brush
	Paints over an image using the source data from a specified history state or snapshot. Select the tool, specify the Brush, Blending Mode, Opacity, Style, Area, and Tolerance.
Erase Tool
	Removes part of an existing path or stroke. You can use the Erase tool on paths, but not on text. Select the tool, click on the part of the image you wish to erase. Drag to erase pixels.
Paint Bucket
	Fills and entire area with a specific color of your choice. Select the tool. Choose a foreground color in the Color Box. Select an area you wish to apply the color to. Click the tool button, then click on the selected area.
Gradient Tool
	Applies a gradient fill to a selected part of the image or to an entire layer. Select an area you wish to apply gradient to, click the tool button, choose a fill in the Options bar, click on the starting point, hold the mouse down and drag to the end point.
Blur Tool
	Blurs the sharp edges of an image. Select an area where you wish to apply the tool. Click the tool button, choose the Brush, Mode, and Strength. Drag the brush along the edges.

Drawing And Selection Tools

Direct Selection Tool
	Selects paths and path segments. Select the tool, click anywhere on the path.
Type Tool
	Types text on a page. Every time you click the Type Tool on a new portion of the page a new layer will be created. Select the tool, click on the page and begin to type. You can specify the font and size in the Options bar. You can also resize and transform the text box by dragging the squares at the sides and corners. Use the Move Tool to move the text on the page.
Pen Tool
	Draws smooth-edged paths. Select the tool, click on the page, drag to draw a path. Click and drag the anchor points to modify the path.
Rectangle Tool
	Draws a rectangle shape. Other shapes that are hidden in this tool are: Rounded Rectangle Tool, Ellipse Tool, Polygon Tool, Line Tool, and Custom Shape Tool. Select the tool, click and drag on the page to draw a shape. The shape will be automatically filled with the current foreground color.

Assisting Tools

Eyedropper Tool
	Takes color samples from colors on the page and displays Tool them in the Color Boxes. Select the tool, click on the color in the image you wish to sample. The Color Box will display this color.
Hand Tool
	Allows you to move around within the image. Select the tool, click on the spot on the page, hold the mouse button down, drag to move in the area.
Magnifying
	Magnifies or reduces the display of any area in your image Glass Tool window. Select the tool, choose Zoom In or Zoom Out in the Options bar, click on the area of the image you wish to magnify or reduce.
Rotate View Tool
	Rotates the canvas Select this tool and click and drag outside of the canvas and the canvas will turn. Hold Shift to make sure that the canvas will snap to certain degree points.
