Monson said members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are ready to welcome "the less active, the offended, the critical, the transgressor'' into fellowship.

"Come back,'' Monson said in his first address to the full church membership since becoming president in February.

Monson opened his remarks by noting the passing of his predecessor, Gordon B. Hinckley, calling the late president ``an outstanding ambassador of truth to the entire world and beloved by all.'' Hinckley died Jan. 27 at age 97 after nearly 13 years leading the church.

Mormons follow a pattern of apostolic succession to select a new president, with the job passing to next most-senior church leader upon the death of the previous leader. Monson has been a senior church leader since 1963 and was one of Hinckley's closest advisers.

Monson said Sunday that he was addressing the faith "from the depths of humility,'' possessing a deep understanding of the responsibilities of his office and an appreciation for the work of the 15 men who previously in the job.

"My earnest prayer is that I might continue to be a worthy instrument in (God's) hands to carry on this great work,'' he said.

Borrowing a familiar Hinckley theme, Monson asked church members to show kindness and respect to those who hold different religious beliefs and to strengthen their families by making the home a loving sanctuary.

He also said that as the moral fabric of society unravels around them, church members should strive to be steadfast in their values.

"We are waging a war with sin,'' Monson said. ``But we need not despair. It is a war we can and will win.''

On Saturday faithful members raised their hands in symbolic support of the 80-year-old Monson's appointment as the church's 16th president.

Founded in 1830, the American-born faith is among the world's fastest growing denominations and claims more than 13 million members.

Church members gather in April and October for two-days of meetings to hear church leaders share personal stories of faith, quote scriptures and offer guidelines for living. The event draws more than 100,000 to the church's downtown Salt Lake City headquarters with members packing a 21,000-seat conference center during each of five sessions.

Millions more view the proceedings live over television, satellite, and Internet broadcasts which are translated into more than 80 languages.

Hinckley, died last Sunday at age 97. He was buried Saturday in Salt Lake City. The church broadcast his memorial service around the world in 69 languages.

President Hinckley presided over the global expansion of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is one of the fastest growing religions in the world, and the fourth largest religion in the United States. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is a Mormon.

The church used to be known for polygamy, but it gave up the practice more than 100 years ago when Utah became a state. Faithful Mormons don't have premarital sex, and they don't smoke or drink-even coffee is prohibited. And heads of the church did not give interviews, until Hinckley decided to sit down with Mike Wallace 11 years ago. Their conversation began with the beginning of the church: Mormons believe that God and Jesus appeared one day in New York state, before a 14-year-old farm boy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Your church says God and Jesus spoke with your founder, Joseph Smith, back in 1820 and told him to start this church. You believe that?" Wallace asked.

"Yes, sir," Hinckley replied.

"He was 14 years old... a backwoods farm boy...in New York state?" Wallace asked.

"That's the miracle of it," Hinckley told Wallace.

You'd expect the head of the church to believe it, but so does Bill Marriott, chief of the Marriott hotel chain, a hard-headed businessman, and he's a Mormon.

"Fourteen years old and God and Jesus come to see him? You believe that?" Wallace asked Marriott.

"Yes, I do. We believe that the early church of Jesus Christ faded away, and that it came back to Joseph Smith," Marriott explained.

And the senior U.S. senator from Utah, Orrin Hatch, a Mormon, believes it, too. "We believe that we know that this happened," the senator said.

What began with God, Jesus and a single farm boy has now become a worldwide religion with more than nine million members. But more than a religion, Mormonism is a lifestyle, an island of morality, they believe, in a time of moral decay. Hinckley acknowledged it is not easy to follow the Mormon faith, and called it the most demanding religion in America.

"It is demanding, and that's one of the things that attracts people to this church. It stands as an anchor in a world of shifting values," he told Wallace.

For example, Mormons adhere to a very strict health code: no alcohol, no tobacco, no coffee, no tea, not even caffeinated soft drinks. They’re supposed to eat meat sparingly, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.

And the result? Mormons live several years longer than most other Americans. Another reason they live longer, Mormons say, is that they suffer less from stress because they have strong, supportive families. Many Mormons marry early and have lots of children.

Premarital sex, as we said, is forbidden among Mormons; so is adultery. Mormons don't even go to R-rated movies. But students at Brigham Young University insisted that having high moral standards did not prevent them from having a good time.

"We like to have fun. We like to go on dates. So we like to do just normal things," one student told Wallace.

"But you don't fool around?" he asked.

"No," the student said. "It's not something that I think is fun. A guy I remember, he told me, 'You know, you'd be so much fun if you'd drink. You would have, you know, you'd be looser and everything.' And I'm like, 'You know, I like to have fun knowing what I'm doing, being completely in control and just having fun with life.'"

And while these young Mormons stressed self-control, they themselves are controlled, to a remarkable degree, by the church. In fact, Mormons who break the rules of morality or health are not allowed to enter sacred Mormon temples.

Living as a devout Mormon is not easy. In addition to what you cannot do, there's a lot you are supposed to do. You're expected to read scripture daily and to read scripture together as a family at least one night a week; students attend daily religious courses.

Sunday services last three hours. But beyond that, church activities take several more hours each week. All of those hours and all of those rules are too much for some Mormons, who fall away.

Steve Benson left the church to become one of its most outspoken critics, even though his late grandfather, Ezra Taft Benson, President Eisenhower's Secretary of Agriculture, had been a church president.

Benson complains that by enforcing conformity, the church stifles independent thought. "The cultural mind-set in the church is when the prophet has spoken, the debate is over," he said.

"And the prophet is?" Wallace asked.

"Gordon B. Hinckley would be the prophet. When he has pronounced the church's position on any issue, it is incumbent upon the members of the church to pray, pay and obey," Benson claimed.

Hinckley's reaction? "Well, that's a clever statement from Steve, whom I know. Now, look, our people have tremendous liberty. They're free to live their lives as they please," he said.

"Are they? Really?" Wallace asked.

"Oh, absolutely. Surely. They have to make choices. It's the old eternal battle: the forces of evil against the forces of good," Hinckley replied.

The critics acknowledge they represent a tiny minority of Mormons. Still, they say that too many Mormons look and act like they came off an assembly line. But the young Mormon missionaries look that way on purpose.

"You all look alike, white shirts, some a little wrinkled; ties. I look at you, I look at your faces and think of your age and I'm inclined to say, 'Well, you're not much to look at, but you're all the Lord has,'" Hinckley said.

Many young Mormons leave college for two years, at their own expense, to be missionaries. Every day, 50,000 of them go door to door in America and 150 other countries.

The missionaries have helped Mormonism achieve its phenomenal growth: half its members are now from outside the United States. But until its expansion into Latin America and Africa, church membership had been overwhelmingly white.

"From 1830 to 1978... blacks could not become priests in the Mormon Church, right?" Wallace asked.

"That's correct," Hinckley acknowledged.

Why?

"Because the leaders of the church at that time interpreted that doctrine that way," Hinckley said.

"Church policy had it that blacks had the mark of Cain. Brigham Young said, 'Cain slew his brother and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin,'" Wallace remarked.

"It's behind us. Look, that's behind us. Don't worry about those little flicks of history," Hinckley said.

"Skeptics will suggest, 'Well, look, if we're going to expand, we can't keep the blacks out,'" Wallace said.

But Hinckley called that "pure speculation."

Now that blacks can be priests, the current issue is whether Mormon women will ever be priests.

Asked why men hold the priesthood, Hinckley told Wallace, "Because God stated that it should be so. That was the revelation of the church. That was the way it was set forth."

Fact is, most Mormon women don't want to be priests. They accept that men control the church and dominate Mormon society. And this has triggered complaints about how the church handles child sexual abuse. Child abuse among Mormons is surely no greater than among non-Mormons, but a study has found that many Mormon women who went to their clergymen for help believe the clergy were just not sympathetic.

"A sociologist tells us that the root of the problem is the fact that men, in effect, in your church have authority over women so that your clergymen tend to sympathize with the men, the abusers, instead of the abused," Wallace told Hinckley.

"That's one person's opinion. I don't think there's any substance to it. Now there'll be a blip here, a blip there, a mistake here, a mistake there. But, by and large, the welfare of women and children is as seriously considered as is the welfare of the men in this church, if not more so," he replied.

Hinckley said the church had been teaching its clergy how to handle abuse more effectively. "We're working very hard at it. There are cases. They're everywhere. They're all over this world. It is a disease. It's an illness. It's a sickness. It's a reprehensible and evil thing. We recognize it as such," he told Wallace.

Mormon clergy are not professionals. They are not paid; their church work is in addition to their regular jobs outside the church.

Whatever their jobs, just being a Mormon is expensive: Mormons are expected to give 10 percent of their salary to the church.

The church reportedly takes in several billion dollars a year and has never had a major financial scandal. Most of the money, they say, is spent building 375 chapels a year all around the world.

"We're reaching out across the world. We're not a weird people," Hinckley told Wallace.

"A weird people?" Wallace asked.

"Yes," Hinckley said.

Mormons know that some outsiders think they are weird. Why? Well, for one thing, devout Mormons wear sacred undergarments for protection from harm, cotton undershirts with undershorts that reach to their knees.

Bill Marriott also said he wears the sacred undergarments. "And I can tell you, they do protect you from harm," he told Wallace.

"I was in a very serious boat accident, fire. The boat was on fire. I was on fire," Marriott explained. "I was burned. My pants were burned right off me. I was not burned above my knee. Where the garment was, I was not burned."

"And you believe it was the sacred undergarments?" Wallace asked.

"Yeah, I do, particularly on my legs because my pants were gone. My undergarments were not singed," he said.

Steve Young, the star quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers is also the great-great-great-grandson of Brigham Young, one of the Mormons' early leaders.

"And do you think that the sacred undergarments have kept you from harm on the football field?" Wallace asked Young.

"I actually take them off to play football. The sacred nature of them, I find that the nature of football and the sweating and so forth, I actually take them off. And I think that's probably prevalent with athletics in the church," Young said.

"But my teammates have enjoyed it," he admitted. "When, you know, you're getting dressed and you're putting your garments on, they think they're pretty cool, a lot of them. 'Hey, where'd you get those?' And I'd always tell them they're way too expensive."

Another curiosity: the church owns more than 3,000 acres in northwest Missouri, where Mormons believe that Jesus will return for his Second Coming. Hinckley preferred not to talk about Jesus returning to Missouri or about sacred undergarments. He said that those points miss the point. He wanted to portray Mormons as mainstream, not extreme, and for that Hinckley had hired a Jewish-owned public relations firm. Mormons hiring Jews to help spread the Word?

Makes sense to Senator Orrin Hatch, but then he wears a mezuzah on a chain around his neck. A mezuzah is often put at the entrance to a Jewish home as a reminder of their faith.

"It's typical of Mormon people to love all people, but especially Jewish people. I wear a mezuzah just to remind me, to make sure that there is never another Holocaust anywhere. You see, the Mormon Church is the only church in the history of this country that had an extermination order out against it by Governor Lilburn Boggs of Missouri. We went through untold persecutions," Sen. Hatch said.

To escape the persecutions, Mormons moved west. And when they reached Salt Lake, their leader, Brigham Young, pointed and declared it their promised land. And now Temple Square is their Vatican.

In Salt Lake City, the church owns a TV station, a radio station, a newspaper, a department store and a lot of the land downtown. Utah is 75 percent Mormon, and the church could wield political power if it wanted to, but President Hinckley told Wallace, "Unlike the religious right, the Mormon church does not have a political agenda."

"We urge our people to exercise their franchise as citizens of this nation, but we do not tell them how to vote and we do not tell the government how it should be run," Hinckley said.

Gordon Hinckley said he never intended to become president of the church, but that, one by one, all the other church leaders with more seniority died.

"There are those who say, 'This is a gerontocracy. This is a church run by old men,'" Wallace remarked.

"Isn't it wonderful to have a man of maturity at the head, a man of judgment who isn't blown about by every wind of doctrine?" Hinckley replied.

"Absolutely, as long as he's not dotty," Wallace said.

"Thank you for the compliment," Hinckley said.

Mormons believe that after they die, their families will be reunited and will live together forever in heaven. "We know it's there. We have an assurance of that," Hinckley told Wallace.

"There's a lot of us that don't," Wallace replied.

"Yeah, I know that," Hinckley said. "But you could."

"I've thought about it. I've not been able to persuade myself," Wallace said.

Hinckley's reply? "Well, you haven't thought about it long enough."

Monson lead The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in its governing First Presidency.

The LDS Church announced during a Monday morning press conference that President Henry B. Eyring will serve as Monson’s first counselor and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf will serve as his second counselor.

Together, the three men form the First Presidency, the highest leadership body in the 13-million member worldwide church.

The reorganization of the First Presidency follows the death of President Gordon B. Hinckley on Jan. 27.

Sister Kristina Rimmel, a missionary from Cologne, Germany, who is serving in the St. George LDS Temple Visitors Center, said Latter-day Saints in her native country were excited when the German Uchtdorf was called as an apostle three years ago.

She said it also caught the attention of people belonging to other religions in Germany. With his call to the First Presidency, Uchtdorf will be even more visible.
“Now they see it’s not only Americans — it’s international,” Rimmel said of the church leadership. “So I’m excited.”

Sister Jessica Fowler and Sister Isabel Vargas — Visitors Center missionaries from Elwood, Ind., and Billings, Mont., respectively — said they have mourned Hinckley’s death but it has been a blessing to be able to testify of the new First Presidency, showing that the church does not fall apart with the death of its earthly leader.

Eyring, who had served as second counselor to Hinckley prior to his death, said he will miss the late church president but is looking forward with “great anticipation” to serving with Monson. He said he knows of Monson’s faith in Christ and his power to receive revelation from God.

Both Eyring and Uchtdorf said they were honored and humbled by the call to serve in the First Presidency. Although Eyring had previously been a member of the First Presidency, there was no requirement that he remain in the presidency when it was reorganized.

Uchtdorf said he was “joyfully overwhelmed” at the call. He also said he knew that the call came from God and that he was looking forward to serving with Monson. He called Monson a great teacher and said he loves Monson’s style of teaching through modern parables.

A former member of the LDS Church’s Presiding Bishopric and First Quorum of the Seventy, Eyring, 74, was ordained an apostle on April 6, 1995. He became second counselor in the First Presidency under Hinckley on Oct. 6, 2007, following the death of President James E. Faust.

He was president of the church-owned Ricks College — now Brigham Young University-Idaho — in Rexburg, Idaho, from 1971 to 1977 and later served as the commissioner of church education. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Utah and master’s and doctorate degrees in business administration from Harvard University.

Eyring was born May 31, 1933, in Princeton, N.J. He is married to Kathleen Johnson Eyring and they are the parents of four sons and two daughters.

Having served in the LDS Church’s Second Quorum of the Seventy, First Quorum of the Seventy and Presidency of the Seventy since 1994, Uchtdorf, 67, was ordained an apostle on Oct. 7, 2004.

He studied engineering, business administration and international management in Cologne, Germany, and Lausanne, Switzerland. He joined the German air force in 1959, receiving his pilot wings in Big Spring, Texas, and fighter pilot training in Phoenix. In 1965 he joined Lufthansa German Airlines as a pilot and worked as an airline captain from 1970 to 1996, holding several executive positions during that time.

Uchtdorf was born on Nov. 6, 1940, in Mährish-Ostrau, Czechoslovakia, and was raised in Zwickau, Germany. His family joined the LDS Church in 1947.

He is married to Harriet Reich Uchtdorf and they are the parents of two children.
Since his call in 2004 as an apostle the Uchtdorfs have had a permanent home in the United States, but their children and grandchildren all live in Europe.

Hinckley was 97. He had spent most of his adult life in the Mormon leadership. Mormons believe he was a prophet of God who received divine inspiration as he engineered a vast expansion overseas. Non-Mormons saw him as the most visible Mormon leader in decades.

Hinckley was named to the highest ranks of Mormon leadership in 1961 and became "prophet, seer and revelator" in 1995. Mormons believe his ascension through the ranks was a process guided by God.

Born in 1910 in Salt Lake City, Hinckley was raised in a family with roots in religious exodus. One of his ancestors arrived in America with other Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower. Another became governor of the Plymouth Colony. Grandfather Ira Hinckley traveled from Illinois to Utah during one of the massive Mormon treks westward in 1852, losing a wife to cholera along the way.

A newspaper boy in his youth, Hinckley spent two years in Great Britain as a Mormon missionary. He wanted to become a journalist and planned to seek a graduate degree in journalism at Columbia University in New York. But his mission president asked him to stop in Salt Lake City first to deliver a message to Mormon leaders. The mission president wanted public relations materials to help with the missionary effort in Europe.

The Mormon officials at Church headquarters were so impressed with Hinckley's pitch, they hired the young man to develop the faith's first public relations department. Hinckley never enrolled at Columbia but he spent 20 years developing a public face and message for his Church. He then worked eight years as the manager of the Mormon global missionary program.

As Mormon President, Hinckley welcomed media attention and appeared in major newspapers and magazines, and on the CBS News program 60 Minutes and the CNN program Larry King Live. He worked hard to challenge a lingering image of the LDS faith as a non-Christian cult. Hinckley depicted Mormons as Christ-centered and mainstream.

Hinckley's courting of news media began on his second day as Mormon president. At a rare news conference, he joked with reporters and tackled tough questions. The event contrasted sharply with the "news conference" of a predecessor, who merely read a statement and left. Questions were not permitted.

Hinckley agreed to two interviews with Mike Wallace, the television-news tough guy at 60 Minutes, and they turned Wallace into a gushing fan.

It was Hinckley's "candor," Wallace told NPR, "his willingness to entertain any question, no matter how difficult or, perhaps embarrassing," that charmed Wallace.

"He was just absolutely open with me," Wallace said. "It became quite clear that there was a great deal in the Mormon religion that I genuinely admired."

Wallace and other interviewers asked Hinckley about controversial aspects of the Mormon faith, including its patriarchal nature, its roots in polygamy (now rejected by Mormons), its excommunications of dissidents, its involvement in political issues, its past denial of full membership for black males (reversed in 1978) and its novel doctrines, which offend some Christian groups.

Mormon prophets have the power to change doctrine overnight. The faithful believe God guides the sitting prophet through revelation. Hinckley didn't change doctrine during his tenure. But he did change the way Mormons and their faith were presented to the world.

One major initiative involved the name of the faith. Most Americans know it as "The Mormon Church." Hinckley launched an effort to stamp out that phrase. He asked news media to use the formal name, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." And, in case anyone missed the point, he changed the official Mormon logo so that the name "Jesus Christ" appeared in oversized letters.

Hinckley was trying "to change the image of the Church from being on the margins," said Jan Shipps, an emeritus professor of history and religious studies at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Shipps is not Mormon but has studied the Mormon faith for 40 years. Hinckley wanted to transform the image, she added, "from being 'weird' to 'not being weird,' in his language. In my language, it's moving from the margins to the mainstream."

Mormons used to pride themselves as a "peculiar" people. But being perceived as mainstream became increasingly important during Hinckley's tenure, with the Church appearing more often in the public eye:

* The Mormon capital of Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, exposing the faith to more scrutiny than ever.
* Mormon leaders conducted campaigns against gambling and same-sex marriage beyond their home territory in Utah and surrounding states.
* More and more Mormons sought, and were elected to, prominent political offices. Nevada Sen. Harry Reid (D) became the Senate majority leader, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) is a viable Republican candidate for president.
* Authorities in Arizona and Utah cracked down on the lingering practice of polygamy (by non-Mormon fundamentalists) and HBO featured polygamy in a dramatic series, highlighting an uncomfortable part of the Mormon past.
* The number of Mormon missionaries seeking converts across the globe reached more than 50,000.

International growth is another Hinckley hallmark, said Kathleen Flake, a Mormon and an associate professor of American religious history at Vanderbilt University. "Making that international church feel and, in fact, be an integrated part of what has been an American church, in Nigeria, in Brazil, in Japan," is a Hinckley accomplishment, Flake said. "[He made] sure that the full component of the Church's program is available in those areas."

Hinckley built thousands of Mormon chapels and dozens of sacred Mormon Temples around the globe. He launched the Perpetual Education Fund, which provides scholarship loans to poor converts and Church members overseas. He wanted to develop strong local leadership as missionaries found converts in poor countries and neighborhoods.

Hinckley took pride in his extensive travel to the faithful, despite his advanced age. He was the missionary-in-chief, visiting members and heads-of-state.

"I have lifted my voice on every continent, in cities large and small, from north to south and east to west across this broad globe," he told a semiannual gathering of Mormons in 2006. "It is all a miracle."

Hinckley also sought to bolster the faith of existing Mormons. The Church bought and renovated Mormon historic sites and encouraged pilgrimages. Hinckley also challenged members to re-read the Book of Mormon, to reconnect with a fundamental text of their faith.

When Gordon B. Hinckley became Mormon president in 1995, nine million people called themselves Mormons. Most of them lived in the United States, where the faith was founded. At his death, the membership rolls counted more than 12 million Mormons in 160 countries. The majority now live outside the U.S.

Tradition dictates a presidential succession procedure that lasts about a week. After memorial services for Hinckley, the Mormon leadership will meet and pray. Tradition also indicates that Hinckley's "counselor" in the leadership, his second-in-command, will become the new Mormon President. That is 80-year-old Thomas Monson, who also spent most of his adult life assisting in the management of the Church. Monson is considered a moderate and was heavily involved in the international expansion effort.

Hinckley Announced

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as "the Mormons," has announced the funeral services for beloved prophet and leader Gordon B. Hinckley. The services will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2008, in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, at 11:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time.

The services will also be broadcast via satellite over the Church satellite system to over 6000 LDS meetinghouses worldwide. Additionally, BYU-TV will broadcast the funeral. BYU-TV is available in many cable and satellite packages in the United States. They also provide live streaming video at www.byu.tv. Thus, viewers worldwide have some options from which to choose.

The funeral will not be an official worship service the way Sabbath meetings are, but it will be an opportunity for people worldwide to pay their respects to President Hinckley. Latter-day Saint funerals generally include a few musical numbers, and there will likely be several speakers who will share their memories of President Hinckley and their testimonies of the Savior and His great plan of salvation.

Latter-day Saint funeral are often more hope-filled than those of some other denominations. While we certainly mourn the passing of a loved one who has died, we also have a firm belief in life after the death of our physical bodies. This is why we perform saving temple ordinances for our ancestors and others who have died before us, and why we desire to have our families sealed to us for time and all eternity. Because we believe that there is an eternity, and that this mortal life is in fact only a small part of our existence. Our spirits lived before we were born on earth, and they continue to live on when our mortal bodies die. Later, through the Atonement of Christ, our mortal bodies and our spirits will be resurrected - reunited, never to separate again.

President Thomas S. Monson, currently serving as the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, explained these things to us:

We know each one lived in the spirit world with Heavenly Father. We understand we have come to earth to learn, to live, to progress in our eternal journey toward perfection. Some remain on earth but for a moment, while others live long upon the land. The measure is not how long we live but rather how well we live. Then come death and the beginning of a new chapter of life. Where does that chapter lead?

Many years ago I stood by the bedside of a young man, the father of two children, as he hovered between life and the great beyond. He took my hand in his, looked into my eyes, and pleadingly asked, "Bishop, I know I am about to die. Tell me what happens to my spirit when I die."

I prayed for heavenly guidance before attempting to respond. My attention was directed to the Book of Mormon, which rested on the table beside his bed. I held the book in my hand, and it providentially opened to the 40th chapter of Alma. I began to read aloud:

"Now my son, here is somewhat more I would say unto thee; for I perceive that thy mind is worried concerning the resurrection of the dead. ...

"Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection -- Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, ... are taken home to that God who gave them life.

"And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow." (Alma 40:1, 11-12)

My young friend closed his eyes, expressed a sincere thank-you, and silently slipped away to that paradise about which we had spoken. (Thomas S. Monson, "He Is Risen," Ensign, Apr 2003, 2-7)

Speaking of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, President Monson continued:

As the least of His disciples, I declare my personal witness that death has been conquered, victory over the tomb has been won. May the words made sacred by Him who fulfilled them become actual knowledge to all. Remember them. Cherish them. Honor them. He is risen. (Thomas S. Monson, "He Is Risen," Ensign, Apr 2003, 2-7)

To learn more about our Heavenly Father's plan of salvation, visit www.mormon.org.

A rare hour with one of the world's distinguished religious leaders, with millions and millions of followers worldwide.
Gordon B. Hinckley, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - the Mormons. From faith and forgiveness in the world today to the myths and realities of his own church - next on LARRY KING LIVE.
Good evening. We have a special Sunday night edition of LARRY KING LIVE tonight with a very special guest.
He's President Gordon B. Hinckley, the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, known as the Mormons. He is the fifteenth such president or prophet in that great church's long history.
And we're in an unusual building. We're across from the temple. What is this, Mr. President - Mister - what do I - president, right? I can call you Mr. President, and George Bush will jump in.

GORDON B. HINCKLEY, PRESIDENT, THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS: This is our conference center. It's a new building. It's a magnificent building. It seats some 21,000 people without any pillars anywhere to stand in the way of their sight.
Great organ. A wonderful organ. Wonderful choir section. Orchestra here. And seating for 21,000 people.

KING: How does it differentiate from the church itself?

HINCKLEY: Well, it's just a part of our structure. The tabernacle just got too small for us. And, moreover, it's getting tired. We're going to have to shut it down for a year and work it over. It's 137 years old.
It's just a remarkable and wonderful thing that we built this before we were faced with that problem.

KING: And how is this structure used?

HINCKLEY: This structure's used for our general conferences, which are held twice each year, for other conferences, other meetings held for Christmas concerts.
We had the other night Audra McDonald and Peter Graves here with the Tabernacle Choir and the orchestra. Had a wonderful program.

KING: In fact, we're showing scenes from it throughout the program
tonight.

HINCKLEY: Well, it's - it was a wonderful program.

KING: Why does this church concentrate so much on building things?

HINCKLEY: Well, you have to house people. You have to house people if you're going to have members. You've got to take care of them.

KING: But you're building everywhere. You've traveled the world - where you build temples.

HINCKLEY: Building everywhere. We build nearly 400 new buildings a year across the world.
We face two great problems as we grow. One is the training of local leadership. The other is construction of houses of worship where the people can meet, carry forward the program of the Church.

KING: Why do they have to be so grand?

HINCKLEY: Well, they're not so grand. They're just beautiful.

KING: Ah, they're pretty grand.

HINCKLEY: They're beautiful. They're beautiful. Nothing's too good for the Lord.
These are houses of God devoted to worship. Nothing's too good for Him.
Now, in doing this, we don't neglect humanitarian efforts, welfare efforts, things of that kind.

KING: Because you can say a dollar spent on a building could be a dollar spent on a family.

HINCKLEY: Well, we take care of the family as well.

KING: You do both.

HINCKLEY: We do both.
We have, this very year of 2004, spent millions of dollars in humanitarian aid and sent it across the world. Worked with Catholic Charities, American Red Cross, Red Crescent, Habitat (ph) and other organizations, Salvation Army.
Our concern is to take care of people who are in need and help them in their distress.

KING: Want to touch a lot of bases tonight. How old are you now?

HINCKLEY: How old? I'm old. I am exactly six months into my 95th year.

KING: And you've lost none of your brain power? None of your - how do you feel?

HINCKLEY: Well, I feel pretty well, except I have to use a cane to get around.
This end of me seems to work all right, but this end doesn't.

KING: Do presidents ever retire? Or must they finish their term by death?

HINCKLEY: They finish their term by death. Yes.

KING: So, no prophet has ever left the priesthood, in a sense, by retiring, ...

HINCKLEY: No.

KING: ... due to health or something.

HINCKLEY: No.

KING: You lost your wife this year after ...

HINCKLEY: Yes, I did. It was a terrible loss.

KING: How do you - how do you recover from - you were married, what, 67 years.

HINCKLEY: Sixty-seven years. Yes. Feel pretty lonely at times.

KING: How do you get over that, because you've become part of each other, right. You finish each other's sentences.

HINCKLEY: Absolutely. Well, you never get over it. Of course you don't.
But the best thing you can do is just keep busy, keep working hard, so you're not dwelling on it all the time. Work is the best antidote for sorrow.

KING: She lived a long life, though.

HINCKLEY: She did. Ninety-two.

KING: She died peacefully?

HINCKLEY: Peacefully and wonderfully. But I miss her so much. She was a great lady.

KING: She traveled with you a lot, too.

HINCKLEY: Oh, every continent. Spoke on every continent, all across the world.

KING: On this wonderful Yuletide time of year, we're talking with one of the more powerful religious leaders in the world, President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at the conference center in Salt Lake. And we'll be right back.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

KING: We're back at the conference center in Salt Lake City with President Gordon B. Hinckley. You're watching lots of scenes tonight from the Tabernacle Choir proceedings.
We're also showing you military scenes around the world celebrating the Christmas season. I would imagine there are members of your faith in Iraq.

HINCKLEY: There are.

KING: How does that affect you, that whole war? Is it hard to deal with - a man of peace - in this war?

HINCKLEY: Of course it is. We believe in peace. We work for peace. We pray for peace.
But we are all citizens of the nation. And we meet our responsibility, as that responsibility is defined by our leadership in the nation.

KING: What if you disagree with the leadership?

HINCKLEY: Well, we can disagree, but we still have an obligation, a responsibility.

KING: Have you spoken to men or women who have gone over to Iraq?

HINCKLEY: Oh, yes. I've spoken to some, yes.

KING: Have you ever had to deal with them? Have you lost anyone yet?

HINCKLEY: We've lost some here, yes. Not right here. But, yes. It's a tragedy. It's a terrible tragedy.
I pray every night that this thing may come to a peaceful conclusion, that we can get along together without carrying on war endlessly over there.

KING: Billy Graham - a friend of yours and mine - told me once that, basically, he thought his mission had failed in that, with all the preaching and all the talk, we still have war. We still have prejudice. We still have people hating people.

HINCKLEY: Meanness. So much meanness.

KING: Why?

HINCKLEY: Well, God gave us our agency. He taught us a way. He showed us what to do. But he gave us our agency and left us free to act as we choose to do.
But with that freedom comes responsibility and accountability. And we shall have to answer for that which we do.

KING: Do you feel, therefore, that the message has not gotten through?

HINCKLEY: Oh, I don't think religion has failed. It's man who has failed. Christ hasn't failed. The Gospel hasn't failed. The teachings of God have not failed.

KING: But if man hasn't listened ...

HINCKLEY: Men have failed.

KING: ... if men haven't listened, that is ...

HINCKLEY: They have not listened. That's right.

KING: So, is that a failure?

HINCKLEY: It's a failure for them, yes. Of course it is.

KING: Not for the teacher.

HINCKLEY: Not for the teacher.

KING: That's a good way to keep going though.

HINCKLEY: Yes, sir.

KING: Did you - you met with the Dalai Lama.

HINCKLEY: Yes, I did.

KING: What was that like?

HINCKLEY: Oh, I had an interesting experience with him. A very interesting ...

KING: Tell me.

HINCKLEY: ... conversation.
We talked about various things. I don't remember all the details, but we had a very pleasant visit. Very pleasant visit.

KING: An extraordinary man.

HINCKLEY: He is. He is. He is.

KING: Do you share views with lots of other church leaders? Do many of you at this kind of hierarchy gather together?

HINCKLEY: We don't gather together much, but we work with people all over the world, with other churches. In causes of common concern, yes, of course we do. In extending humanitarian aid, of course we do.
We keep our theological differences. We hope we can be agreeable and not every become disagreeable in talking about doctrinal matters.

KING: When people say that you are a very rich church - financially rich church - where does that come from?

HINCKLEY: Well, that comes from the perception they have of what they see.

KING: It's just a perception.

HINCKLEY: This marvelous building here.

KING: How did it get built?

HINCKLEY: It got built through the tithes of the people. We practice the law of tithing. It works.
It's the Lord's law. He sets it forth in about that many words. You contrast that with the Internal Revenue Code, and note the difference.
But this is the way we ...

KING: You're in favor of a flat tax, then.

HINCKLEY: We - the Church is sustained by the tithes of the people, which are generously given.

KING: You don't go out and raise money beyond that?

HINCKLEY: Oh, we invite people for some things. For instance, we - three years ago, we decided to set up what we call the Perpetual Education Fund.
As I traveled about, I saw these young people who were in poverty - members of the Church - who for generations their people had been in poverty. I said, we've got to do something to help these people.

So we established a program. We didn't have a dollar toward it. We invited people to contribute, and they've contributed a very, very generous corpus. And the earnings of that corpus are devoted to extending loans to young people to go to school, so they get training.
We now have about 16,000 of them in school on loans.

KING: How many members worldwide?

HINCKLEY: Twelve million worldwide.

KING: We'll be right back with President Gordon B. Hinckley. Don't go away.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

KING: We're back on this holiday weekend with President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Twelve million members worldwide.
And we are seen worldwide, and we would imagine many of that membership watching tonight.
Again, I want to touch a lot of bases. Do you see the war on terrorism as Christians versus Muslims?

HINCKLEY: Oh, I don't see it in that light. I see the war, the terrorism factor, as the work of a group of misguided, evil men.
Their interpretation of their religion may be a factor in what they do. But that is not representative of the great body of the Muslim people across the world.

KING: Is it important to you that the president be as - for want of a better term - religious as he is? Does that comfort you that politics and religion somehow have come together in this administration?

HINCKLEY: The president of the United States? Yes. I'm glad to see that he is religious, that he does pray. I believe in prayer, in divine power. And I'm grateful that he's a prayerful man, yes.

KING: When you pray, what is that? What's occurring? Are you talking to God? You're a prophet, so God talks to you.

HINCKLEY: I'm talking to God, yes. I do pray. Of course I do.

KING: What do you do when they're not answered?

HINCKLEY: Well, they are answered, but not always just the way you'd want them.

KING: Sometimes it's no.

HINCKLEY: Sometimes it's no.

KING: And when it's no, how do you explain that to yourself?

HINCKLEY: You accept it and go forward with faith.

KING: Isn't that hard?

HINCKLEY: Oh, it may be. But after all, that's the challenge of life.
Sure.

KING: You ever doubted it?

HINCKLEY: No.

KING: Never doubted your faith.

HINCKLEY: I don't think so. Can't recall when I have. I have faith in the eternal nature of things.

KING: Do you like the president's idea of faith-based initiatives? Having various churches get involved in things that previously government was involved in?

HINCKLEY: Well, I think that the churches do a better job in many respects than the government does in various kinds of things. Extending aid, the helpfulness, and so on, yes.

KING: There's been so many changes in the social culture of this country. And in your 96 years, you've seen a lot of ...

HINCKLEY: Ninety-five.

KING: So much like the Jews. You are very similar to the Jewish people, right?

HINCKLEY: Hope so. Sure.

KING: Family concepts?

HINCKLEY: Good people.

KING: I mean, right, you know. We are all ...

HINCKLEY: Sure.

KING: ... last time I checked, ...

HINCKLEY: Sure.

KING: ... we were all people.
But as the mores have changed - for example, I know that the Church is opposed to gay marriage.

HINCKLEY: Yes.

KING: Do you have an alternative? Do you like the idea of civil unions?

HINCKLEY: Well, we're not anti-gay. We are pro-family. Let me put it that way.
And we love these people and try to work with them and help them. We know they have a problem. We want to help them solve that problem.

KING: A problem they caused, or they were born with?

HINCKLEY: I don't know. I'm not an expert on these things. I don't pretend to be an expert on these things. The fact is, they have a problem.

KING: Do you favor some sort of state union?

HINCKLEY: Well, we want to be very careful about that, because that - whatever may lead to gay marriage, we're not in favor of.
We - many people don't get married. Goodness sakes alive. You know that.
Many people who have to discipline themselves. If they transgress, they become subject to the discipline of the Church. But we try in every way that we know how to help them, to assist them, to bless their lives.

KING: It's hard to be a Mormon, isn't it?

HINCKLEY: No. It's wonderful.

KING: Not hard.

HINCKLEY: No, no. It's just wonderful. It's demanding. Great expectations. I should say so. But it's wonderful.

KING: Wonderful to resist the temptations of life?

HINCKLEY: Oh, you don't go around resisting. You just develop a positive outlook and walk forward with faith.

KING: What do you do ...

HINCKLEY: We don't dwell on the negative. We dwell on the positive.

KING: What do you do with temptation? What do you do with it?

HINCKLEY: Set it aside. Put it behind. Leave it there.

KING: And you've been able to do that all your life.

HINCKLEY: I tried to, yes.

KING: Were you ever, as a youngster, did you ever stray?

HINCKLEY: Oh, I was a natural boy growing up, of course I was. Just a freckled-faced kid. Sure.

KING: I'll bet you were.

HINCKLEY: Sure.

KING: I'll bet you had a little rascal in you.

HINCKLEY: Sure I did.

KING: OK. It's good to know ...

HINCKLEY: Sure.

KING: ... that God blessed you this way.

HINCKLEY: I've been blessed so abundantly that I can never get over it. I just feel so richly blessed that I want to extend that to others wherever I can.

KING: Hope you have a long life.
We'll be right back with President Gordon B. Hinckley. Don't go away.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

KING: The Mormons' public image in dealing with stereotypes. One, women are regarded lesser in the Church.

HINCKLEY: Oh, there's no substance to it. Ask the women. You'll get the answer.

KING: They can't get your job, though.

HINCKLEY: No, they can't. They've got one of their own, and that's a very responsible job. They have their own organization. They have their own board.
It's the largest women's organization in the world with four million members. There's nothing like it anywhere else in the world. And they run a tremendous organization.

KING: How is the Church doing with black membership?

HINCKLEY: Wonderfully. Wonderfully. I was in Africa last January, dedicated a temple in Accra, Ghana. We have a great facility there.
I'll be back in Nigeria sometime this coming year to dedicate a new temple there. And that temple will be devoted almost exclusively for the work that black people will do there.

KING: Do you envision someday a black prophet?

HINCKLEY: Could well be within the realm of possibility.

KING: So you've come a long way in that regard.

HINCKLEY: We've come a long way.

KING: You once said that you didn't like women working outside the house. Has that changed? The realities of economic life?

HINCKLEY: I think we're paying a price for it ...

KING: Explain.

HINCKLEY: ... in family life, in looking after children. The family across America, across the world, is under terrible stress. We all recognize it, I think. You see it. Latch-key children. Gangs in our cities.
The absence of a mother in the home is a very serious thing, I think.

KING: But the absence also of strong financial help causes many, many families to require ...

HINCKLEY: That's ...

KING: ... both people to work.

HINCKLEY: That's true. That's very, very true. But I simply say this. Be careful. Do the very best you can.
When all is said and done, the greatest satisfaction you'll have in this life as you grow old will be seeing your children grow in righteousness and faith and goodness as citizens of the society of which they are a part.
There'll be no greater satisfaction than the satisfaction you'll gain from your family.

KING: Holding the post you hold, this kind of responsibility, is it ever a burden? I mean, ...

HINCKLEY: No.

KING: ... you're the leader of a flock of 12 million.

HINCKLEY: Yes. Yes.

KING: That's a big CEO.

HINCKLEY: Well, ...

KING: I mean, do you feel it often? Do you ever feel like ...

HINCKLEY: Oh, sure. You feel inadequate at times, of course you do. You face vexing problems, stressful problems. But everything works out. I just go forward on the assumption that everything works out.

KING: You're an optimist.

HINCKLEY: I'm an optimist.

KING: How do you deal when - and we've had a couple of cases this year in Utah - when Mormons commit crimes against others.

HINCKLEY: Yes.

KING: And your faith, while it's 12 million strong, tends to get singled out.

HINCKLEY: Sure it does.

KING: How do you deal with that?

HINCKLEY: Well, you just accept the facts as they are. Somebody's failed. Somebody's made a serious mistake. It happens in every society,
everywhere.
Fortunately, I think it happens less among us than it does in many other areas.

KING: Do you think that's why you get singled out?

HINCKLEY: Oh, I think so. Sure. Yes. They never fail to mention it.

KING: Do you ever call victims of crime?

HINCKLEY: Sure I do. Oh, of course, I have done, yes.

KING: When you get to be your age, you attend a lot of funerals.

HINCKLEY: Yes.

KING: Don't you?

HINCKLEY: All of my friends who jog.

(LAUGHTER)

KING: As a famous coach here in Utah once said, I don't jog, I want to be sick when I die.
But isn't that hard, to keep - you know, as Frank Sinatra once said, all of my friends are gone.

HINCKLEY: Yes, that's right. I sometimes feel like the last leaf on the tree and the wind's blowing.

(LAUGHTER)

KING: I met your son. What does he do?

HINCKLEY: I have two sons. Good sons. They're both businessmen. Yes.

KING: Are they very much into the Church?

HINCKLEY: Very much so. They've held high, responsible positions. Yes. My daughters, likewise.

KING: How many grandchildren?

HINCKLEY: I have 25 grandchildren.

KING: How many great-grandchildren?

HINCKLEY: Oh, at the last count about 40. They keep coming.

KING: There are other things the Mormons do.
We'll be right back with President Gordon B. Hinckley. Don't go away.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

KING: We return. You're seeing lots of scenes of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and also military choirs, as well, on this holiday weekend with so many American and British and Australian and other servicemen serving in ports unknown in faraway places.
We're talking with the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, President Gordon B. Hinckley.
Are you concerned about health in America? I know the Mormons concentrate a lot on eating well and doing the right things. No smoking, no drinking, watching the foods they take. But America is ...

HINCKLEY: Getting fat.

KING: ... what, getting fat, not healthy.

HINCKLEY: That's what they say. That's ...

KING: We don't have the ...

HINCKLEY: ... what I read.

KING: We don't have the best health system in the world any more.

HINCKLEY: Well, we're so affluent. That's one thing. We probably overdo
it.

KING: Do you ever preach on that?

HINCKLEY: Oh, of course. I've given talks on the word of wisdom, as we call it. A great thing. It's a remarkable thing. In 1833, the Church received this teaching on health that has blessed our people in a wonderful way.
Statistical evidence shows that, by and large, we live longer than the normal population. And I think it's directly attributable to that law of health.

KING: Do you believe in healing?

HINCKLEY: Surely. Of course we do.

KING: And there are those who go around and say they heal. How does the general public separate the genuine from the fraud?

HINCKLEY: Well, I don't know that they do all these. But we do healing, of course. We bless people.
The scripture indicates that if there be any sick among you, let them call in the elders of the church and anoint them with oil and bless them. And that's what we do.
It's a sacred thing. It's a sacred ordinance in our Church.

KING: What happens when you die?

HINCKLEY: When you die? Well, I'm not fully conversant with that. I haven't passed through that yet.

KING: Well, call me. Knowing you, I'll be there and I'll call you.

(LAUGHTER)

KING: But you do believe that something happens.

HINCKLEY: Oh, of course we do. But we believe that death is a part of an eternal journey, that we lived as spirit children of our father before we came into this life.
That we're here in mortality as a part of an eternal living, and that we will go on living after this life, purposefully. And that through the redemption of the Lord Jesus Christ, men will be resurrected. There will come a time of resurrection.
And those who walk in obedience may go on to exaltation.

KING: And you've been waiting so many years for this, the return of the Messiah. When do you expect it?

HINCKLEY: I don't - I don't know. Even the angels in heaven don't know. I have no idea.
But I'd welcome it at any time. The world has so many problems, that if he were to come, it would be better, I think - far better.

KING: There's no doubt that, in your mind, he is coming.

HINCKLEY: He is coming, but I have no idea when.

KING: You are the prophet, right?

HINCKLEY: Right.

KING: Does that mean that, according to the church canon, the Lord speaks through you?

HINCKLEY: I think he makes his will manifest, yes.

KING: So if you change things, that's done by an edict given to you.

HINCKLEY: Yes, sir.

KING: How do you receive it?

HINCKLEY: Well, various ways. It isn't necessarily a voice heard. Impressions come. The building of this very building I think is an evidence of that.
There came an impression, a feeling, that we need to enlarge our facilities where we could hold our conferences. And it was a very bold measure. We had to tear down a big building here and put this building up at great cost.
But goodness sakes, what a wonderful thing it's proven to be. It is an answer to many, many needs. And I think it's the result of inspiration.

KING: And that came from something higher than you.

HINCKLEY: I think so.

KING: Tell me some other things. How do you feel about young Mr. Huntsman being the next governor?

HINCKLEY: I think he's a good man. I think we're going to have a good governor.

KING: You go back a long way with that family, don't you?

HINCKLEY: Yes. I think very highly of them. Good people.

KING: Do you ever get involved in politics?

HINCKLEY: No. Not since I was a very young man and I was a - went to the state convention as a delegate.

KING: You did.

HINCKLEY: Yes.

KING: Republican.

HINCKLEY: Yes, I was.

KING: I had that feeling.

HINCKLEY: But I have not - I voted for men and not for party. The Church doesn't become involved in politics.

KING: You've voted for people in both parties, then.

HINCKLEY: Yes, sir.

KING: We'll be back with our remaining moments in a special presentation that just might be the best gift I've ever gotten - right after this.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

KING: One of the things that the Mormon Church is famous for worldwide is its expertise in genealogy - it may be the number one - looking back and telling people where they came from and why.
And tonight before we went on, President Hinckley presented me with - I can't believe this - the genealogy of my own family. The arrival of my mother and my father at Ellis Island in 1907 and 1923. The papers they filled out at Ellis Island.
How do you do this?

HINCKLEY: Well, we have a ...

KING: I'm so honored by it. I can't tell you what this means to me.

HINCKLEY: We have a tremendous family history resource, perhaps the greatest in the world in many respects. And we have some very dedicated and very able people.
And sometime ago, they went to work on your genealogy. And when they heard that we were going to be on this show, they finished it off in a hurry and brought to me, so that I can make a presentation to you.
And I'm pleased and happy to do so.

KING: I'm pleased and honored to accept it.

HINCKLEY: And Larry, this sets forth some things that you didn't know about your own family. And I hope that it'll be a source of satisfaction and joy to you, and that you'll gain great pleasure in going through it and seeing these documents concerning your father and your mother.

KING: There are documents in here, for example - I don't know if the camera can catch this - the naturalization papers ...

HINCKLEY: Naturalization papers ...

KING: ... that my father filled out when he arrived in this country in 1927.

HINCKLEY: That's right. And here are ...

KING: And then my mother's whole genealogy. She came with her six sisters, ...

HINCKLEY: Right.

KING: ... who are all listed on the manifold. All their names.

HINCKLEY: Census records.

KING: Where they lived in Europe.

HINCKLEY: Where they lived in Europe, and what happened to the ...

KING: Grandparents.

HINCKLEY: People who were left behind. Tragedy. Tragic story.

KING: I even wrote a book once in which I had that my father's death - and I had the wrong year - I had - the book said 1944. They correct me. It was 1943. And they are right.
They have the ships that each of my parents came in on.
Now, you do this for - and then you put it together in a wonderful book and also a CD, ...

HINCKLEY: Yes, sir.

KING: ... a DVD ...

HINCKLEY: DVD.

KING: ... of this.

HINCKLEY: Yes.

KING: What got the Church involved in genealogy?

HINCKLEY: Well, we do this because of our interest in family life. The family is the most important unit of society. And we think it very important to do that.
And so we trace our ancestry and do work for the dead in the temples that we have, in behalf of our ancestry.

KING: Well, ...

HINCKLEY: Extending to them the blessings that we've enjoyed.

KING: It's amazing. Here's the ship my father arrived on.
They even have the newspaper story of my father's death - a copy of the newspaper story - the population of his home town in the Ukraine, where he worked in Kearney, New Jersey, in the federal shipbuilding, what happened to the ship he came in on. It was scrapped in 1936.
My mother's ship. She came on the ship, the same company that owned the Titanic.

HINCKLEY: Yes, sir.

KING: You people - you really get - and maps of where they were born.

HINCKLEY: Here's a map of where your father was born and your mother was born. KING: That is - as I said, I've received some enormous gifts in my life. This I will treasure more than any other, including your friendship.

HINCKLEY: Well, when all is said and done, as I've said before, nothing is more important than the family.
And this is your family, your forbearers, your roots. And I hope that this will be a source of satisfaction to you. And we're just so pleased to do it.

KING: Well, I am honored to accept it.

HINCKLEY: Thank you, sir.

KING: What can you tell us - what about 2005?

HINCKLEY: 2005, I think, is going to be a good year. I'm optimistic.
I think that we can look forward with hope and faith. I hope there'll be a resolution of the Iraq situation. I earnestly hope so.
I hope that the economy will be good. And I hope that there will be peace across the world.

KING: And you'll be traveling.

HINCKLEY: And I'll be traveling, at my age.

KING: Thank you so much.

HINCKLEY: Thanks to you, Larry.

KING: President Gordon B. Hinckley, the fifteenth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - the Mormons. And we - I join with President Hinckley in wishing you and yours the very best of holiday seasons.
Tomorrow night, Kevin Spacey and Dodd Darin, the son of Bobby Darin. Tomorrow night on LARRY KING LIVE.
Stay tuned now for more news around the clock on your most trusted name in news, CNN.
From Salt Lake City, good night.

Hinckley, who led The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through nearly 13 years of global expansion, has died at the age of 97.

President Hinckley was the 15th president in the 177-year history of the Church and had served as its president since 12 March 1995.

The Church president died this evening at 7 p.m. of causes incident to age at home surrounded by his family. A successor is not expected to be formally chosen by the Church's Council of Twelve Apostles until after President Hinckley's funeral within the next few days.

President Hinckley was known, even at the age of 97, as a tireless leader who always put in a full day at the office and traveled extensively around the world to mix with Church members, now numbering more than 13 million in 160 nations.

His quick wit and humor combined with an eloquent style at the pulpit made him one of the most loved of modern Church leaders. A profoundly spiritual man, he had a great fondness for history and often peppered his sermons with stories from the Church's pioneer past.

He was a popular interview subject with journalists, appearing on "60 Minutes" with Mike Wallace and on CNN's "Larry King Live," as well as in hundreds of newspapers and magazines over the years. During the Salt Lake Olympics of 2002, his request that the Church refrain from proselytizing visitors was credited by media with generating much of the goodwill that flowed to the Church from the international event.

In recent years, a number of major developments in the Church reflected President Hinckley's personal drive and direction. In calling for 100 temples to be in operation before the end of the year 2000, the president committed the Church to a massive temple building program.

In 1999 - 169 years after the Church was organized by its founder, Joseph Smith - the Church had 56 operating temples. Three years later that number had doubled, largely because of a smaller, highly practical temple architectural plan that delivered these sacred buildings to Church members in far-flung parts of the world. Many more Church members can now experience the sacred ceremonies that occur only in temples, including marriages for eternity and the sealing of families in eternal units.

President Hinckley was the most traveled president in the Church's history. His duties have taken him around the world many times to meet with Latter-day Saints in more than 60 countries. He is the first Church president to travel to Spain, where in 1996 he broke ground for a temple in Madrid; and to the African nations of Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Cape Verde, where he met with thousands of Latter-day Saints in 1998.

At a general conference of Church members in April 2001, President Hinckley initiated the Perpetual Education Fund — an ambitious program to help young members of the Church (mainly returning missionaries from developing countries) receive higher education and work-related training in nations where they would otherwise likely never receive it.

Closer to his Salt Lake City home, President Hinckley announced the construction of a new Conference Center in 1996, and dedicated it four years later. Seating 21,000 people, it is believed to be the largest religious and theater auditorium in the world, and has become the hub for the Church's messages to the world, broadcast in 54 languages.

Even before his term as president, President Hinckley's extensive Church service included 14 years as a counselor in the First Presidency, the highest presiding body in the government of the Church, and for 20 years before that, as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

President Hinckley was born 23 June 1910, in Salt Lake City, a son of Bryant Stringham and Ada Bitner Hinckley. One of his forebears, Stephen Hopkins, came to America on the Mayflower. Another, Thomas Hinckley, served as governor of the Plymouth Colony from 1680 to 1692.

President Hinckley's first job was as a newspaper carrier for the Deseret News, a Salt Lake City daily. After attending public schools in Salt Lake City, he earned a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Utah and then served two years as a full-time missionary for the Church in Great Britain. He served with distinction and ultimately was appointed as an assistant to the Church apostle who presided over all the European missions.

Upon successfully completing his missionary service in the mid-1930s, he was asked by then Church President Heber J. Grant to organize what has become the Church's Public Affairs Department.

President Hinckley began serving as a member of the Sunday School general board in 1937, two years after returning home from missionary service in Great Britain. For 20 years he directed all Church public communications. In 1951 he was named executive secretary of the General Missionary Committee, managing the entire missionary program of the Church, and served in this capacity for seven years.

On 6 April 1958, while serving as president of the East Millcreek Stake in Salt Lake City (a stake is similar to a diocese), President Hinckley was appointed as a general authority, or senior full-time leader of the Church. In this capacity he served as an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles before being appointed to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on 5 October 1961.

President Hinckley has received a number of educational honors including the Distinguished Citizen Award from Southern Utah University; Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Utah; and honorary doctorates from Westminster College, Utah State University, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Southern Utah University, Utah Valley State College and Salt Lake Community College. The Gordon B. Hinckley Endowment for British Studies, a program focused on the arts, literature and history of the United Kingdom, was established at the University of Utah.

President Hinckley was awarded the Silver Buffalo Award by the Boy Scouts of America; was honored by the National Conference of Community and Justice (formerly the National Conference of Christians and Jews) for his contributions to tolerance and understanding in the world; and received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

In March 2000 President Hinckley addressed the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. He also has addressed the Religion Newswriters Association, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and twice has addressed the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.

President Hinckley has written and edited several books and numerous manuals, pamphlets and scripts, including a best-selling book, Standing for Something, aimed at a general audience. In it he champions the virtues of love, honesty, morality, civility, learning, forgiveness, mercy, thrift and industry, gratitude, optimism and faith. He also testifies of what he calls the "guardians of virtue," namely traditional marriage and family.

President Hinckley married Majorie Pay in the Salt Lake Temple in 1937. They are the parents of five children. Sister Hinckley passed away April 6, 2004.

Hinckley, who led The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through explosive growth during his more than 12 years as president, died at 7 p.m. today of causes incident to age, surrounded by family. He was 97.

He traveled the world during his tenure, which was marked by a number of significant milestones, including the "Proclamation to the World on the Family," construction of dozens of small temples and the creation of several new quorums of the Seventy. He called for increased fellowshipping of new converts and reaching out to other faiths. Church membership has grown from 9 million to more than 13 million members during his administration.

His ministry was characterized by a strong desire to be out among the people. He traveled more than half a million miles and spoke to hundreds of thousands of members in more than 60 nations, employing his mastery of electronic media to bring unprecedented press attention to the church.

Under his leadership, the 21,000-seat Conference Center, north of the Salt Lake Tabernacle, was built and dedicated, and the portion of Main Street between Temple Square and the Joseph Smith Memorial Building was turned into a plaza. Online computer access to church information as well as online and CD access to family history resources grew exponentially.

A young man of 25 and just home from his mission when he went to work for the church in 1935, he remained an employee, administrator and general authority for almost seven decades, an eyewitness — and key contributor — to what he called, with the approach of the 21st century, "a great season in the history of the world and a great season in the history of the church."

His proposal to build small temples launched what some have termed the most ambitious temple-building program in world history. Some 122 temples are now in use and nine more have been announced, or are under construction. His goal of having at least 100 temples in use, authorized or under construction by Jan. 1, 2000, was accomplished with the dedication of the church's 100th temple in Boston on Oct. 1, 2000.

Three of the temples were at major sites in church history. The Nauvoo Temple was rebuilt to 21st-century standards, a temple was dedicated at Palmyra, N.Y., and another was dedicated at Winter Quarters, Neb.

Area Authority Seventies, essentially replacing regional representatives, were called in the late 1990s to help handle the church's growing leadership burden at the local level. The First and Second Quorums of the Seventy also grew.

At the 171st Annual General Conference in the spring of 2001, he announced creation of the Perpetual Education Fund, a loan program to help young Latter-day Saints in Third World countries.

President Hinckley, who spent nearly 14 years as a counselor in the First Presidency, was set apart as 15th church president on March 12, 1995, three months before his 85th birthday. He was sustained in solemn assembly at the 165th Annual General Conference that April 1.

He then set out to visit as many church members as possible in their homelands. He continued an ambitious travel schedule throughout his stewardship, urged the members to get their houses in order and warned against pornography and maltreatment of spouses and children. The "Proclamation to the World on the Family," that he announced in September 1995 gave Latter-day Saints a ready reference for their beliefs on family life, and has been used as a model by international organizations seeking to preserve the traditional family.

With the death of President Hinckley, the First Presidency was dissolved and the Quorum of the Twelve became the governing body of the church. President Hinckley's counselors, Presidents Thomas S. Monson and Henry B. Eyring, took their places — first and 11th — within the 14-member quorum. Until his death in August 2007, President James E. Faust served as President Hinckley's second counselor for 12 years.

Sometime soon, following President Hinckley's funeral, quorum members will sustain a new church president. If historical precedent holds, the quorum's senior apostle and president, President Monson, will succeed President Hinckley.

President Hinckley's initial call to the First Presidency came July 23, 1981, as a counselor to President Spencer W. Kimball. He was set apart as second counselor to President Kimball on Dec. 2, 1982, following the death of President N. Eldon Tanner. In November 1985, following the death of President Kimball, he was called as first counselor in the First Presidency, serving with President Ezra Taft Benson and President Monson, the second counselor. Presidents Hinckley and Monson continued in those positions under President Howard W. Hunter.
