Well, ever since Artfire has gone commercial, I can't login to my little handmade shop anymore so I couldn't get the handmade contest ready. I guess it's for the better, since I already have a lot on my plate nowadays, but I sure do hope they fix it soon.

So since I can't do anything if I can't access my shop, I will dedicate the entirety of October's games to Tatyanna and her amazing family.

I could have well titled this post "When life gets in the way" :) We will start the October games on the 10th this month... hopefully that will give me more time to organize them...

I wanted to have the big games back this month, but that requires a lot of time and life has not been waiting for slow little me lately. That is to say even foregoing sleep, I can't catch up with all the things life is throwing at me.

So this month we will have the games from October 10th to the 18th, with the giveaway drawing and contest winners announced on the 18th at 11:59 PM.

Alright! Who broke the Internet while I was gone?! 'Fess up! LOL

This month's games are a little delayed and there's no contest, blame it on Twitter making too many changes over the summer, and another site who has changed all its links with some bogus error. Hopefully I can figure out what's going on for next month's games and we can go back to full blown contests and giveaways :)

So what fun shall we have this month? Anybody up for a "Find the duck game"? Ohhhhh, how about find the face in the Moon, or sharing your favorite summer memories?

This month's games will be a little different than the usual. We'll have TWO giveaways! How awesome is THAT!

Batten Disease Awareness - Giveaway

This weekend is International Batten Disease Awareness weekend, and you all know I have a soft spot for Tatyanna and her relentless fight against this terrible disease.

Tatyanna is a very brave little girl battling Batten disease with the help of many lovely people who have joined efforts to allow her to benefit from the latest research. She is an amazing child who finds the strength to smile and hug other people's worries away, when she herself is suffering.

I am hoping this giveaway will help spread the word about Tatyanna's Hope and Batten disease. The giveaway will end June 8th at 11:59 EDT and you can enter by simply spreading the word about Tatyanna and letting me know. More details at the bottom of this post.

A little about Batten...

Batten disease is a rare inherited autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder and can affect children and young adults.

It is the most common form of the NCL (Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses) group of disorders. The four types of Batten disease are classified by age group: infantile NCL (INCL), late infantile NCL (LINCL), juvenile NCL (JNCL), and adult NCL (ANCL).

Batten disease is inherited through what is called an autosomal recessive pattern. It gets inherited like blond hair, i.e. if both parents carry a specific mutation in their DNA, their children have a 25% chance of being affected.

Research has shown Batten disease is caused by problems with the brain's ability to remove and recycle proteins. This is because mutations in the genetic DNA impair the body's ability of creating certain substances, which in turn causes the buildup of lipofuscin pigments in the body's tissues.

These lipofuscins pigments are considered "wear and tear" pigments, so research to cure Batten disease can have much larger benefits through the understanding of how the body deals with damage and aging.

Those affected with Batten disease literally waste away. It all starts with vision and motor skills loss, and over time seizures worsen, mental alertness becomes more and more impaired, muscle mass starts decreasing, and the child or young adult's life ends blind and bedridden.

Right now, there is no cure for Batten disease, and the very expensive treatments that do exist are only successful in slightly delaying the inevitable.

This doesn't have to stay this way however. There is HOPE!

Research is ongoing and eight genes have already been identified as having an association with Batten disease. Gene therapy for this disease is in its infancy, so more research is needed to help understand not only Batten disease, but many other NCL disorders.

The more people are aware, the faster research will progress. The faster research progresses, the faster a better treatment will be found, or even a CURE! The faster a cure is found, the more we can help Tatyanna celebrate many birthdays!

Despite the gorgeous weather competing with FaceBook, we've still managed to have a great and FUN time checking out all the new creations from AWESOME ARTISTS.

We've only had 15 entries this month, but look how PRETTY they are!

Our lovely Eileen with PaintingByEileen has won the contest for a second time, and no wonder... How could you not LOVE this sleeping gingerpeep angel? :)

This ADORABLE spice holder has more cute than cuteoverload.com! Eileen has such an amazing gift for painting with feelings. The lids of each jar are each handpainted with a different gingerpeep, each and every one more adorable than the others. That means... they are all INFINITELY ADORABLE! :)

Look at those cuties, don't they put a BIG SMILE on your face? See what I mean? :D

So which one is your favorite gingerbread cutie? My favorite is still the sleeping one with his cinnamon stick, but they are all SO SO SO ADORABLE!

I'm really happy Eileen shared her gingerpeeps with us, this spiceholder really showcases her AMAZING TALENT with the brush and the heartstrings :) Each ginger face is different, each with its own personality, and ALL ADORABLE!

We need a better word than adorable :) I'm very tempted to add Gingerpeep as a synonym for ULTRA SUPER ADORABLY CUTE... What do you think? :)

Redeeming a discount code on ArtFire is super easy!

This visual guide will walk you through the steps needed to redeem a Coupon Code or Gift Certificate valid in an ArtFire shop.

In summary, you would enjoy shopping, and enter the Discount Code on the second page of the checkout process.

The first page will be the Shopping Cart, the second one the proper Checkout. The reason for two pages is so the shipping can be calculated for an accurate Order Total. The third and last page will be the payment information page.

Let's look at using the Coupon Code mv10moreFUN for 10% more FUN :) Just replace MV10MOREFUN with your code in the instructions below.

This was the 4th installment of the monthly ♡it?♡it! (Like it? 'Like' it!) Contest which encourages everyone to share their latest creations and to click 'Like' on creations they like. It's a really FUN way of spreading the beauty of handmade while at the same time feasting one's eyes on the latest and greatest pretties from AMAZINGLY TALENTED artists.

The wall at mv's Fan Page was transformed into a GORGEOUS art gallery for the weekend, everyone got invited to share their latest creation, and we all got to vote on ALL the ones we liked (and I got to review each and every one of them, now THAT was AWESOME FUN! I shoulda been an art gallery guide LOL)

I think this month's contest's success was partly because we've extended it to Monday night. I was really tired on Sunday, and since Monday was a holiday, we've decided to close the contest Monday midnight instead of Sunday. And the flood gates of prettiness opened ;)

I will definitely try to squeeze in a Monday for future contests as well, I guess not everyone lives on their computer day and night and weekends like I do LOL So the next contest will tentatively be scheduled for May 7th to 9th, Saturday to Monday. I really hope to see you there!

And now let me tell you about the awesome pirate costume that won this month's ♡it?♡it! Contest. It's the cute little guy towards the upper right in the collage. The picture is kind of small, so here he is in all costumed glory. AAARRRRRRrrrrr matey! ♥

What an awesome costume AND can be made for a little boy or a girl. Fabrics are customizable too, how awesome is THAT! This is what handmade is about, high quality workmanship personalized to the wearer... just like it used to be many moons ago before the advent of cheap wear-once-and-throw-away low quality made in China... oh, don't get me started LOL This is one LOVELY costume any child would ADORE!

The materials used for the costume in the pic are quality cotton muslin for the shirt, imitation suede fabric lined with satin for the vest, cool cotton for the pants, and a sash made of a silky fabric that has a mottled real gold look sheen to it.

KraftyMax Celtic SunCatcher - Matching Game WINNER

The Matching game was one of 5 AWESOME games during mv's April games. Players were invited to pick a favorite item of theirs, find a match in one of my shops that would wear or pair well with theirs, and post the match on Twitter. My favorite match would be featured on my blog... and HERE IT IS! :)

The winning match is KraftyMax's tweet matching her amazing beaded suncatcher and my beadaholic t-shirt :

Her tweet asked:

Well, that's a TOTAL match, she IS a beadaholic, and her SunCatcher is the best proof there is. I mean, look at it! Over 100 hours of work went into it, and over 11,000 beads. ELEVEN THOUSAND TINY BEADS! Can you believe this lady's PATIENCE and PASSION for beadweaving?

No wonder her suncatcher was accepted in three competitions. Her beading skills are AMAZING. Check out her shop and gallery for even more of her beautiful handmade beaded creations.

It's probably hard to appreciate all the work and detail that go into one of Max's masterpieces... until you have the wonderful opportunity to TOUCH one of her creations. You wouldn't believe how tiny these beads are. She uses size 11 Delica beads, which means you can fit 121 of these beads in a square inch! That's TINY! And she weaves them one by one, thousands upon thousands of them.

How would I know? Well... I happen to have one of her GORGEOUS creations right here in front of me. Almost 3,500 tiny beads wrapped around my wrist. This was a surprise bracelet Max made for me and let me tell you, THIS is a work of LOVE ♥

Wanna see it? :)

It's made from tiny tiny black, purple, and green (my colors!) Delica seed beads, with a gorgeous fringe made with matching crystals. The clasp is so beautiful too! Gorgeous scrollwork antique gold with a magnetic closure, AND a tiny chain so it stays safe around your wrist in case you bump into something and it comes loose.

The beadweaving is so flexible and smooth it's amazing. And the detailed design... well, suffice to say KrafyMax can make ANYTHING from beads. Give her a photo of your kid and she'd make a bracelet in likeness! She can PAINT with beads.

Despite FaceBook breaking so much more than usual after the "upgrade", we've still managed to have plenty of FUN in this month's ♡it?♡it! Contest. As always, we've feasted our eyes on some gorgeous gorgeous creations. Thank you for sharing, voting, or just visiting! YOU ROCK!

As usual, this was a quick and easy weekend contest, running on mv's Fan Page from 3/25/2011 to 3/27/2011, well, a little later in the month than usual :) All my lovely talented fans were invited to share their latest creation, and we all got to vote on ALL the ones we liked. "Like it?? Like it!!" :) CLICK that 'Like' button when you like something ;)

Before I tell you all about the COOL flaming pants, a little bit about this month's contest.

So while we've had less than half the normal number of entries, they've all made up in cuteness and beauty. AND this month we've had a record 19 votes for the winning entry!

Deborah is our resident newbie helper, kindness provider, and just plain AWESOME. She is a mom, therefore she is a superhero :) How else could she manage to work a full time job, two shops, giveaways, social media, AND be an awesome mom? Calling on Mom SuperPowers!

She specializes in taking boring OUT of baby fashion with colorful outfits. And by colorful, she MEANS colorful, not pastels that only have a hint of color.

We've had yet another awesome "♡it? ♡it!" Contest this month, and OH what FUN to see all the beautiful handmade creations!

As usual, this was a quick and easy weekend contest, running on mv's Fan Page from 2/19/2011 to 2/21/2011 (Ok, unlike the previous one, this was extended 'till Monday since it was a holiday). All my lovely talented fans were invited to share their latest creation, and we all got to vote on ALL the ones we liked. "Like it?? Like it!!" :) CLICK that 'Like' button when you like something ;)

Eileen's heartwarmingly cute gingerpeeps won, and it was such a tight race! No wonder with such wonderful handmade pretties! Before I tell you all about the gorgeous Tween Apron that won this popularity contest, a little bit about the contest and the beautiful 21 entries shared by our fellow talented artisans.

Kakuro Color Coded Cheatsheet FUN for a Happy 2011

It's that time of the year when we write the wrong year on checks, make hard to keep resolutions, and feel we are ready to start everything afresh. The baby 2011 has just arrived and it promises to be a WONDERFUL year! I mean, it starts with 1/1/11, isn't that PERFECT? :)

So here's to an EXCELLENT year for everyone! A 2011 filled with love, joy, prosperity, success, good health, and all the happiness life can bring!

And since I have a few days off, I've used my vacation to feed my Kakuro addiction and made the color coded cheatsheet I've always dreamt of having. I'm sharing it with all Kakuro and Sum Sudoku fans as an addiction feeding gift :) I hope you find it useful, pretty, and easy to use!

You can download the PDF here (free download, no registration required, but there's a 20 second countdown wait): Kakuro Sum Sudoku Color Coded Combinations List.

Scroll all the way down and click the Regular Download button. The file is very small (60KB) so ignore all the slow download warnings, it's actually pretty quick once you get past the Captcha.

The list is color coded by total sum and number of cells so it's easy to spot the row I'm looking for. Even numbers are white and odd ones are gray. Lucky unique sums are bolded.

I keep the file open in Facing-Pages View and Alt-tab between my browser and the PDF viewer when I need a sum I can't remember, like those pesky 4 and 5 cells in the 20s :)

I used to use the Kakuro Number list at http://www.grosse.is-a-geek.com/kaklista.html, and the Always Used feature has come in handy quite a few times, so I've integrated it into this list as well.

The headers mean:

++: Total sum for group of cells

##: Number of cells/squares/boxes

Possible: Possible combinations of non repeating numbers for that particular ++ and ##

|2|3|4|5|6|7|8|9|: The color codes for each number of cells. White is 2 cells, lavender is 3 cells, green is 4 cells, etc...

Common: Numbers that appear in every one of the possible combinations. Sum 35 in 7 cells will surely have a 5, for example.

Used: All possible numbers from all the combinations. A cell in a group of 2 for sum 6 can only be 1, 2, 4, or 5 for example.

Not used: These are in adjacent sums, as they cannot appear in this particular sum. For example, a sum 12 in 4 cells cannot have any cells with 7, 8, or 9 in them.
