Outsourcing, the trend of contracting out jobs, often to lower-cost regions where labor may more cheaply be employed, has prompted the creation of various online services designed to create a marketplace in which freelance workers and potential employers can connect. oDesk is one among a number of companies, including Elance , Freelancer, Guru and vWorker (formerly Rent A Coder), that create marketplaces in which employers and freelancers can contact one another. These sites often manage the payments, and make money by charging membership fees and/or take a cut of the payment. The cuts can range from 4 percent to 15 percent. oDesk charges 10% but does not charge a membership fee.

oDesk allows employers (“buyers”) to create online workteams coordinated and paid through the company's proprietary software and website. The name is a short version of "no desk in reference to the company's intent to enable anyone to work anywhere, anytime. Prospective employers can post jobs for free, and freelance workers (“contractors”) may create profiles and bid on jobs, also for free. The company collects 10 percent of the payment. Payments are made through oDesk, which handles many bookkeeping tasks for the transaction. In addition to the marketplace aspect and the payment/bookkeeping services, the company uses collaborative software, “oDesk Team,” that allows employers to see a provider's progress while he or she is billing time. This aspect of the company's business model has drawn criticism.

The company describes itself as a staffing marketplace and management platform. As of Jan. 10, 2009, the company reports that nearly 37,000 of its 170,000 providers are in the United States. The company's site is entirely in English, and all transactions are made in U.S. dollars. The site does not post statistics regarding locations of buyer companies, but a comment posted by an oDesk employee noted that the majority are U.S.-based In December 2009, the company's self-reported tally of services paid through its site had passed $113 million.

The specific areas of expertise supported by the site include web development and a wide variety of programming/software development skills, graphic design, writing and administrative support. The company provides voluntary skills tests in various disciplines from English aptitude to specific programming skills, and profiles include a feedback mechanism.

There is an awful lot of misinformation out there about blogging and the problem is that the failures outweigh the successes by about a million to one, so for every successful blogger out there, there are 999,999 people telling you that you cannot make money blogging. What they really mean is they cannot make money blogging.

The other problem is that a good proportion of the people who make money blogging do it by selling crappy advice to the other 999,999 failures. I am not going to do that. I am not selling a damn thing, although if you take my advice and sign up for the tools I use, I will make a couple of dollars in commissions. All I need is 999,999 people to take my advice and I will be set for life, in which case - anyone want to buy a few blogs?

I do it with a combination of freelance writing, several niche blogs, article writing and, for the last 18 months, writing a business blog for a luxury property portal. Online outsourcing is the business process of contracting third-party providers (often overseas) to supply products or services which are delivered and paid for via the internet. Online outsourcing emerged in the early 2000s, along with advances in internet technology, as a viable option for SMEs and entrepreneurs who lacked the necessary financial resources to meet the costs associated with traditional forms of outsourcing.

Outsourcing or freelancing marketplaces play a pivotal role in connecting buyers of outsourced services (small businesses and individuals) with providers of outsourced services (freelance workers).

The last decade has seen strong growth in online outsourcing, particularly through freelance marketplaces, with over $500m USD spent on the top outsourcing sites between the turn of the Millennium and the start of 2010. In the first quarter of 2010 more than $50m USD was spent on these same marketplaces by the second quarter of 2010 this figure had jumped to over $70m USD, representing a 40% growth in quarterly spend in just 3 months. In the 3rd Quarter of 2010 this figure had reached $78.8m and did not take into account spend on crowdsourcing sites like 99Designs or Amazon's Mechanical Turk.
