Boy does this make me feel old! I remember all these things. Including the Sears catalog in the Out Houses.

And we call these the Good OLD Days!!!

So many of you won’t know what some of this is about! Lucky you- you young pup!

Be sure to refill the ice trays, we're going to have company.

Watch for the mailman, I want to get this letter in the mail today.

Quit letting the screen door slam when you go out!

Be sure and pull the windows down when you leave, it looks like a shower is coming up.

Don't forget to wind the clock before you go to bed. Wash your feet before you go to bed, you've been playing outside all day barefooted.

Why can't you remember to roll up your britches? Getting them caught in the bicycle chain so many times is tearing them up.

You have torn the knees out of that pair of pants so many times there is nothing left to put a patch on.

Don't you go outside with your school clothes on!

Go comb your hair, it looks like the rats have nested in it all night.

Be sure and pour the cream off the top of the milk when you open the new bottle.

Take that empty Coke bottle to the store with you so you won't have to pay a deposit on another one.

Put a dish towel over the cake so the flies won't get on it.

Quit jumping on the floor! I have a cake in the oven and you are going to make it fall!

Let me know when the Fuller Brush man comes by, ’cuz I need to get a few things from him.

You boys stay close by, the car might not start and I may need you to help push it off.

There were six of us kids from the west part of town. Ages ranged from twelve to fifteen, with John Anderson being the oldest of the group. At that time (60 of 70 years ago), it was a common sight to see kids walking around on home-made stilts, and so it was with us. Each one of us had made his own pair which consisted of three foot lengths of one by four material, with a block of wood of corresponding width nailed onto them. Next a piece of strap was nailed to the block and then to the stilts, forming a stirrup in which to place the foot. At the top was a strap with a belt buckle which, when buckled around the legs just below the knee, made it possible for anybody to walk around on them.

Stomping about on stilts was fun for awhile and then it got kind of boring, without much appeal for us anymore. It was then that John came up with the bright idea of driving sixteen-penny nails into the bottom of the stilts and then with a hacksaw cutting off the heads of the nails, leaving three quarters of an inch exposed. The nails would then be sharpened to a point with a file so anyone would be able to walk on ice.

The six of us each had altered stilts and were now eager to try them out, but we would have to wait until it rained or snowed with a night or two of cold weather following. It was nearing the end of January when we got what we had hoped for. A small hollow not far from where John lived had been filled by rain and soon we had a solid skiff of ice we could try walking on. Hans Poulsen, Denzel Moss, James Jacobs, Reed Gunderson and I were eager to give it a try.

We arrived at the pond, waited for a couple of boys who were a bit late getting there, then with our stilts on, we were ready to see if it could be done. As John was the instigator of the idea, it was decided he should be the first one. He stepped out on the ice and proceeded to cross and return to where we were standing. Each of us in turn did the same thing. After this bit of fun, we walked off the ice and held a conference. To make this thing more exciting, we decided to issue a challenge to some of the kids from the west part of town. It was at school recess time that the challenge was brought up. We bet them we could walk on stilts on any ice pond they would choose and that we could do it and they couldn't. The bet was readily accepted and the day was set when it would take place.

Ken Johansen, Burt Seely, Whitney Osborne, Clarence Ericksen, Oscar Olsen, Dean Larsen would be on the opposing side.

That day came - February sixteenth. They had chosen a good solid ice pond near the depot; just west of the train tracks. We showed up with our stilts but didn't show them to anyone. They, the opposition , not knowing the trickery being played on them, naturally thought we would be using regular stilts the same as theirs. We would go first. Of course, we walked all over the ice with no mishaps at all.

It was agreed beforehand that we would then walk off the ice, go to the bobsled, hide our stilts under some straw, then return to watch the others slip and fall and just make utter fools of themselves. But when Ken Johansen fell and received some black and blue marks on his body, it was no longer a laughing matter, and when some of the others fell, it was time to call a halt to this nonsense, and for us to confess to the unfair trick we had played on them.

We apologized and said we were sorry for what we had done and that something like this would not happen again. They took it all in good stride and even laughed about it. They even conceded how dumb they must have been, not knowing that there was something rotten in Denmark.

We parted as good friends and have stayed that way as long as I can remember. I still also fee a bit remorseful for what we did.

The U.S.S. "Utah" ~ Another Story of School Children's and School's Participation in war projects as remembered by Ellice McClenahan Carter

The U.S.S. "Utah" , a dreadnought type vessel, was launched at Camden New Jersey, December 23, 1911. The people of Utah wished to present a suitable silver service, and a letter was sent to various school superintendents of the state inviting them to cooperate in securing subscriptions from the school children. These contributions were not to exceed 25 cents per child, and $2,277.42 was contributed.

The 129 piece silver service was presented by Governor Spry aboard the vessel at the New York Navy yard, November 5, 1911.

When the ship was decommissioned the service was returned to Utah and is now on display in our state capital.

The U.S.S. "Utah" was sunk at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

My mother would hang clothes outside and in the winter down the basement. We only had a “ringer washer until” about 1968 then we got an automatic washer and a dryer!
I still hang my clothes on the line outside! But I don't need to worry about Freeze dried.

I'll bet you remember "the clothes line!"

Remembering Mom's Clothesline

There is one thing that's left out. We had a long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push

the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty.

You have to be a "certain age" to appreciate this one....

(But you YOUNGER ones can read about "The GOOD ol' days"!!)

I can hear my mother now.....

THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES:

(If you don't even know what clotheslines are, better skip this.)

1. You had to hang the socks by the toes... NOT the top.

2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs... NOT the waistbands.

3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes - walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.

4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.

5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail! What would the neighbors think?

6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake!

7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y'know!)

8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... clothes would "freeze-dry."

9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky"!

10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with

the next washed item.

11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed.

12. IRONED???!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!

Martha Brothersen

September 12, 1917 ~ January 23, 2012

Martha Webb Francom Brothersen passed away at home in Mt. Pleasant, UT January 23, 2012 at the age of 94. She was born September 12, 1917 to John Leonard and Dulcie May Webb Francom in Lehi, UT. She married Charles F. Brothersen September 9, 1942 in Malad, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple February 21, 1949. Charles passed away January 19, 2004.
Martha had a great love of learning, graduating from Utah State University. This gave her the opportunity to teach school in Denver, CO; Fairview, UT; North Sanpete High School and in Davis county. She was an avid reader all her life. She was a devoted member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served all her life in many capacities. She had a trained singing voice and sang in many choruses and groups. She was a member of DUP in Layton and Mt. Pleasant. She spent 20 years after retirement as a tour guide at the Beehive House in Salt Lake. She learned to snow-ski in her 50's and loved camping with her family. Martha loved to travel and toured many places in the U.S. as well as three trips to Europe and many to Central America.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, sisters Phyllis Christensen and Beth Tolley, brother Paul Francom.
She is survived by children Charlene (Kenneth) Palmer of Mt. Pleasant, UT; Carl Brothersen of Logan, UT; and Bruce (Becky) Brothersen of Brigham City, UT; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and brother Alan (Connie) Francom.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 30th at 1:00 p.m. in the Mt. Pleasant Stake Center (295 South State). Viewings at the church will be held Sunday from 6-8 p.m. and from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. preceding the services. She will be laid to rest at her husband's side in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery. We are helping Zane Zabriskie with his Eagle Scout Project. He is taking pictures of all the stones and submitting them to Gen Web Tombstone Project. His older brother, Sebastian, started this project a few years back. My roll is to enter the data on a form and send it to UTGENWEB ARCHIVES. I am one of many who are helping with this wonderful project. It is a great opportunity for us all to benefit and use the pictures here on the blog.

The following are from the Page Family. There are no Page families currently living in Mt. Pleasant that I know of. However, from the History of Mt. Pleasant, the Page Family was very active and influential in Pioneer times. These seem all to be children. In Family Search, Deseret Page is listed as both the father and mother; obviously wrong. Grandfather was Daniel Page. Daniel Page appears on the Mt. Pleasant Pioneer monument as one of the original pioneers. It makes me sad as I wonder about their living situation; as these children were born in the late 1800s and lived only a short while.
