Making the Best of WEP

While not the answer to every wireless security need, WEP can still be effective if used properly.

The 802.11b specification provides a form of encryption called Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). It operates on the Media Access Control (MAC) layer, which is part of the Data Link layer of the OSI model. When using WEP, only clients that know the "secret key" can associate with an Access Point or Peer-to-Peer Group. Anyone without the key may be able to see network traffic, but every frame is encrypted. The specification employs a 40-bit shared-key RC4 PRNG algorithm from RSA Data Security. Virtually all cards that speak 802.11b support this encryption standard.

Although hardware encryption sounds like a good idea, the implementation in 802.11b is far from perfect. First of all, the encryption provided happens at the link layer, not at the application layer. This means that your communications are protected up to the gateway, but no further. Once it hits the wire, your packets are sent in the clear. Worse than that, every other legitimate wireless client that has the key can read your packets with impunity, since the key is shared across all clients. You can try it for yourself. On a network using WEP, simply run a packet sniffer such as tcpdump or Ethereal on your laptop and watch your neighbor's packets just fly by.

40- Versus 64- Versus 104- Versus 128-bit WEP

Why do the various card manufacturers quote so many different key lengths? The original 802.11b specification defined a 40-bit user-specified key. This key is combined with a 24-bit Initialization Vector (the IV), a random number that is part of the WEP algorithm. Together, this yields 64 bits of "key," although the IV is actually sent in the clear!

Likewise, a 104-bit WEP is used with the IV to yield 128 bits of "key." This is why user-defined keys are 5 characters long (5 characters x 8 bits/character = 40 bits) or 13 characters long (13 characters x 8 bits/character = 104 bits). The user doesn't define the IV; it is part of the WEP algorithm (and is generally implemented as 24 random bits.)

Naturally, more bits sounds more secure to the consumer, so some manufacturers choose to list the larger number as the "key length." Unfortunately for WEP, more bits do not necessarily mean significantly greater security.

Many manufacturers have implemented their own proprietary extensions to WEP, including 104-bit keys and dynamic key management. Unfortunately, as they are not defined by the 802.11b standard, there is no guarantee that cards from different manufacturers that use these extensions will interoperate.

To throw more kerosene on the burning WEP tire mound, a team of cryptographers at the University of California at Berkeley (among others; see the references at the end of this section) has identified weaknesses in the way WEP is implemented, effectively making the number of bits used in the encryption key irrelevant. With all of these problems, why is WEP still supported by manufacturers? And what good is it for securing your network?

WEP was not designed to be the ultimate "killer" security feature (nor can anything seriously claim to be). Its acronym makes the intention clear: wired equivalent protection. In other words, the aim behind WEP is to provide no greater protection than you would have when you physically plug into your Ethernet network. Keep in mind that in a wired Ethernet setting, there is no encryption provided by the protocol at all.

WEP provides an easy, generally effective, interoperable deterrent to unauthorized access. Given the choice between an open access point with all of the defaults in place and a network running 40-bit WEP, the casual user running NetStumbler will choose to investigate the open network every time. While definitely not beyond the reach of a determined network cracker, a well-chosen WEP key is still just too much of a pain for the average War Driver to deal with. To make the best use of WEP, consider the following guidelines:

Use a nonobvious key. Dictionary attacks against a WEP key are executed much more quickly and easily than a full-blown AirSnort session. Make sure that your key doesn't use a simple word, even if you obfuscate it further with l33t h4x0r sP33k. Believe me, network crackers know how to speak it better than you do. Throw in a couple of symbols, or better yet, use a Hex key with nonprintable characters.

Use the longest key that your hardware supports. If all of your wireless network hardware supports 104-bit WEP, use it. But keep in mind that many devices do not support 104-bit WEP, and those that do may not interoperate well.

Change keys often. Current WEP key attacks depend on either a dictionary attack or the collection of large amounts of data to deduce the key. The more often you change the key being used, the more difficult a potential cracker's job will be. Unfortunately, this might not be feasible for a network with a large user base, as you would be faced with the classic key distribution problem.

Use WEP in combination with other security features. If you happen to have a network that uses hardware of the same manufacturer, you might be able to take advantage of proprietary extensions to shore up WEP. For example, Cisco equipment supports rapid WEP key rotation and dynamic keying using 802.1x. If all of your clients can take advantage of these extensions, then use them. Unfortunately, as we will see in , using other standard features like "closed" networks and MAC filters really does little to improve network security.

Consider WEP a deterrent, not a guarantee. Remember that it is unlikely that WEP alone will keep out the most determined attackers. When building a security policy, be sure to consider your likeliest threats, and weigh them against the benefits and restrictions of your implementation. The threat model for a wireless network on dial-up in a house in the middle of the woods looks very different from that of an AP on the internal LAN at a law firm downtown. Consider the risks and benefits of your wireless network, and configure it accordingly.

Consider not using WEP at all. This chapter is full of practical implementations that neatly sidestep the whole question of WEP security by introducing strong application-layer encryption. Consider doing away with WEP altogether in favor of strong authentication and encryption.

Some of the things that happen in P.O.S.T. have nothing to do with system performance other than impeding the process of getting to the operating system to run your applications. Intel, AMD, AMI, Award/Phoenix, and the PC manufacturers were aware of this waste of time, evaluated the events involved, and in many cases took steps to reduce the number of items and the amount of time the startup process takes. To that end there are a handful of changes you can make in order to boot up faster:

With RAM as reliable and economical as it is (and having so much of it) and having Plug and Play operating systems like Windows and, to some extent, current versions of Linux, the Quick Test mode is more than adequate, and preferred for faster boot times. This parameter is specifies the depth, and thus the time involved, for testing system RAM and finding and checking the basic components of the system—COM and LPT ports and such.

Most BIOSes provide the capability to automatically search for, identify, and configure different types of drives across four possible IDE and Serial ATA connections. This parameter setting usually shows up as AUTO in the IDE configuration choices. If you leave the parameter for all four possible IDE or Serial ATA devices set to AUTO, your BIOS will waste a lot of time searching for nonexistent devices. For faster boot times set the parameter to NONE for any unused interfaces and connections that have nothing attached to them.

Some system boards provide security measures that demand a password before beginning the P.O.S.T. process or allowing you into the BIOS setup program.

The original IBM-PC (1981) did not provide any security measures or a BIOS setup program; all it had was a P.O.S.T. If you needed to configure a PC, you did it with switches and jumpers. A program to set up the system BIOS and configuration did not come along until the IBM-PC/AT (1984), and it had to be run from a special boot-up diskette. The idea of providing a user interface and access to the system configuration settings within the BIOS did not come along until about 1986. Today no PC system is made without this valuable built-in setup feature. Eventually, the security feature of password-protecting access to the system came along.

If, after turning on your PC, you are prompted for a password instead of greeted with a fancy logo screen or the technical gibberish that suggests the system is getting ready to let you use it, then a security feature has been turned on that we call a " pre-boot password." Without the right password to get past this point, the system is basically dead in the water—game over, do not pass go and collect $200—unless or until you reset the BIOS setting. But how do you do that without getting past the password to the setup program?

This Method is also very effective for putting the system board back into "factory stupid" mode where it knows nothing about your system components and forgets all of your parameter tweaks. This is very useful if you've performed a hack that renders the system unbootable or unstable.

The goal is to get the system to forget that it needs a password and forget what the password was. The password data is stored with the rest of the system configuration data in a small amount of memory that is kept alive using a small battery or internal power cell. To clear out the data, you need to remove the power from this memory element. This means the system will also lose any system configuration that was saved. You'll need to later reconfigure the system parameters so you can boot your operating system.

For this and many subsequent hacks, you will be working with electrical components inside your PC. We want you to get through the entire book and enjoy your computer for a long time without risk of electrical shock or component damage. When the cover is off your PC and you are removing or adding components—be they add-in cards, RAM chips, CPUs, or fans—especially when you are handling the screws to hold things in place, ALWAYS turn the PC's power OFF and unplug the power cord from the back of the PC.

Disconnecting the power cord removes the risk of exposure to high voltages and accidentally turning the power to the system board on. Disconnecting the power cord also allows the PC chassis to become ungrounded, which reduces the potential difference between any static charge in your body and the chassis so static shocks are less likely.

It is also recommended that you use an anti-static wrist strap connected to the PC's chassis for further protection of delicate electronic components.

To perform this hack you will need:

A #1 or #2 Phillips-head screwdriver, or (less likely) a T-15 TORX driver or a 1/4" hex nutdriver, to open the case

Needle-nosed pliers if you are working with jumpers

A small flashlight or headlamp

With tools at hand, perform the following steps:

Turn the PC off (this means a total shutdown, not merely standby or hibernate mode) and disconnect the AC power cord.

Remove the cover from your system (this step may require tools, undoing a thumbscrew, or flipping a latch or two).

Refer to the user manual for the motherboard to find out how to "reset CMOS" memory. You may also find a label for specific jumper or switch settings marked on the system board.

Change the switch setting or jumper position to a specific position or remove the jumper entirely as prescribed in the manual to clear or reset the CMOS memory.

Wait 20-30 seconds for the memory to clear out from lack of power.

After 20-30 seconds put the switch or jumper the way it was before for normal use.

Reconnect the power cord and start up the system to see if the settings have changed to defaults.

Shut the PC down, disconnect the power cord, replace the cover, reconnect the power, and power up the PC.

Enter the BIOS setup program to configure the system as needed. This may include setting the date and time, selecting disk drive parameters, and selecting which devices the system uses to boot up with first.

If your system does not have a "reset CMOS" jumper or switch , the only option is to locate and remove the coin-style battery cell (or on some very old PCs, the battery pack), as shown in Figure 1-2, that provides the power to the CMOS memory.

Follow Steps 1 and 2 above, locate the battery, and remove it. Leave the battery out of the system for 20-30 seconds, replace it, and start up the system. The CMOS memory in some systems may retain settings longer than others. If the CMOS memory does not clear and you're still stuck, you may need to leave the battery out for several hours before reinstalling it.Once the system is able to perform P.O.S.T. and to start booting up the system, you will need to get into the Setup program for the BIOS and make a few basic adjustments, such as:

Setting the date and time

If you expect to perform more hacks with jumpers, switches, cables, chips, or disk drives, you'll probably find it convenient to leave the cover off your PC, but beware: we do not want to cause more trouble than we're trying to solve. You could be exposing yourself to dangerous voltages (inside the power supply) or exposing the internal wires and connections to disk drives and plug-in cards to your tools, screws, and other wires that could come in contact with them. At this stage, spilling your favorite beverage or dropping your tools anywhere inside the PC chassis is not advised.

Remotely Shutdown Your friends Computer....

REMOTE SHUTDOWN...................
XP PRO has a lot of fun utilities. One of the most useful ones I have found to date is the ability to remotely reboot a PC. There are 2 ways of doing this. You will need to have admin access to the PC to preform these actions. That being said, here is the first way to do it:

Right click my computer, choose manage.
Highlight the Computer Management (Local) then click on Action, choose connect to another computer.
In the window that opens fill in the machine name of the PC you want to connect to and click ok.
Once connected right click on Computer Management (Remote machine name) and choose properties.
Go to the "Advanced" tab and click the Settings button under Start up and recovery.
Click on the Shutdown button.
Under action choose what you want to do (you can log off current user, shut down, restart, or power down. you can also choose if you want to force all applications to close, close hung apps, or wait for all apps to close by themselves).

The second way... Remember dos... that good old thing. Open up a command prompt and enter in the following:

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -r -m \\Machinename. The command prompt has more switches and options. I highly suggest using shutdown.exe /? to see all the posibilities

Install xp Fast

INSTALL XP FAST

Boot through windows xp cd
After all the files are completely loaded, you get the option to select the partition. Select "c:"
Now format the partition, whether it is normal or quick with NTFS or FAT
Once the formatting is completed, All the setup files required for installation are copied. Restart your system by pressing Enter.
Now here begins the simple trick to save 15 minutes.
After rebooting , you get a screen where it takes 40 minutes to complete or finalize OS installation
now press Shift + F10 Key. This opens command Prompt.
Enter "taskmgr" at the command prompt window. This will open task manager
Click the process Tab, here we find a process called Setup.exe . Right click on Setup.exe-> Set priority - > Select High or Above normal. Initially it will be Normal

Disable Task Manager

First Of All Go to Run And Type:-
