The Movie Room - John Varty one of the owners of Londolozi is a self proclaimed film maker who has filmed several movies on the reserve in the wild. One of the more popular is the movie Running Wild with Brooke Shields.

The South is full of old historical plantations that hide deep in the woods under oak and myrtle trees. These plantations are often called "haunted" after mysterious items disappear and stories are revealed about their past. The fascination with ghosts in these homes is understandable in light of the heavily wooded and moss covered plantations that seem spooky themselves. The good news is that these ghosts are just looking to have a good time!

No more waiting in line in the West Village! Magnolia Bakery has opened a tiny outpost shop in the front entrance of Bloomingdales on Third Avenue and 59th Street. Even though it doesn't have the history of being shot in "Sex in the City" and other great shows...the cupcakes taste just the same!

Shoppers can pick up a souvenir t-shirt to take home over the holidays in case those cupcakes won't make it through security.

For the month of October, they are selling a pink ribbon cupcake in which fifty cents of the proceeds of each cupcake will go toward The Breast Center Research Foundation.

All the more reason to stop by and treat yourself this month!

Recently on a jaunt to Sea Island, Georgia, I met with Alice Parker of Parker Art Gallery to review some amazing works of art by a talented artist who studied under the wonderful Elaine De Kooning, wife of Willem de Kooning at the University of Georgia.

Jim Touchton who grew up in South Georgia studied at the University of Georgia in the late 1970's under Mrs. De Kooning. He then moved to New York City with her help, and began his career.

Many of my clients would like to find a painting from an artist that holds value at a reasonable price. Alice mentioned that several of her clients find it nice to purchase a piece in which they can follow the artist and watch how he "evolves" over the years. Jim's work is relevant to this in how he has become so much more abstract over the years compared to his initial paintings he completed 8-10 years ago. He spends much of his time between East Hampton and South Georgia where he is represented and enjoys painting. A few of Touchton's works below available at the Parker Art Gallery.

Currently at the Museum of Modern Art is one of the largest de Kooning exhibits on display until January 9, 2012. Take a close look at his art and see all of the physical mechanics put into each painting as he started to paint, scraped some paint off, drew some drawings, added some material, and then painted again. The amount of energy put forth in every piece is thrilling and leaves you begging for more!

The new TV Series, Pan Am, aired this past Sunday night full of drama and glamour. The stewardesses (not flight attendants) were dressed to perfection and weighed on the scales periodically by their head stewardess. The pilots are all handsome gentlemen more concerned with finding a girlfriend than landing the plane. It is extremely hard to believe that air travel was ever as gracious or customer friendly and fun. Pan Am was the principal and largest international air carrier in the United Stated from 1927 until its financial collapse in 1991.

On this oh so dark and rainy Friday, I am posting news on our newly designed office space...in progress. One of the most neutral colors this season is Platinum Grey. So, I painted the walls with Benjamin Moore paint colors China White and used Platinum Grey for the millwork and doors.

Grey is neutral color that works really well with a punch of one other bold color...whether it be a pair of lamps with orange shades or a yellow throw over a sofa in the room. It makes a great backdrop for an ever-evolving space.

Make Mine Blue with Stripes

The Cloister

Before the summer ends, I decided trek home to the beach in my native Georgia. Sea Island is a premier resort that has been a long time favorite of celebrities and politicians since the beginning of the 1900's. Numerous U.S. Presidents have vacationed here, as well as royalty from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and other countries.

Aside from the many wonderful private homes that are maintained on this exclusive island, the crowning jewel is the hotel known as The Cloister. Originally designed by architect Addison Mizner in 1928, the hotel was completely rebuilt just a few years ago in the same grand style. The revitalization included not only rebuilding The Cloister from the ground up, but also adding a new beach club, spa, stable, gun range, and tennis center.

While planning my upcoming trip to South Africa, I came across this marvelous resort built by Laurence Graff (founder of Graff diamonds) and decorated by David Collins Studio from London. I am sure they have a fabulous jewelry vault somewhere in this luxurious resort overlooking the Helshootge Mountain Pass...maybe I'll get to take a peek while I am there!

Walls for Drawing

Recently I worked on a project in which my client has one large empty wall in her Kitchen with a family to juggle. So, I decided to paint her wall with chalkboard paint in frames so that she could quickly leave a message up or draw a calendar for her nanny. Meanwhile, her little one just loves using his creative skills on the lower half of the wall with colored chalk.

Stop by your local Home Depot or Lowe's and pick up a jar or two of Rust-Oleum Chalkboard paint and make this your summer fun project.

Tape off the area that you want to paint first with blue painters tape or masking tape.

I created picture frames with borders with the tape first.

Lastly, I had the ceiling painted a light blue, hung the lights, and then filled in the framed out tape with the chalkboard paint.

The final outcome was fun for all to enjoy!

Other fun ideas to do with chalkboard paint:

Paint and label your own wine bottles...choose whatever year you like.

Organize your month with various shades of grey each day.

Jazz up those plain old Crate and Barrel white jars with labels.

Give your kids plenty freedom to eat and draw on their own special coffee table. No worries of messing up your nice one! Visit Ikea for the base.

No more searching through cabinets...the info is on the door!

...And if you are really talented, create your own Cy Twombly and hang it in your Living Room. Good luck painting!

I have officially discovered one of my favorite towns in Connecticut. It is such a lovely place to go where everyone rides their bicycle to market and the beaches are pristine. This past weekend we celebrated with a cookout on the beach while a small town band played music for everyone to enjoy.

This favorite local cafe is well-known for its great lobster rolls and home-made ice cream.

One of the newest little stores is "Flea". It is a cute little boutique shop off the avenue that also sells homemade ice cream, cupcakes, and has a little cafe.

There are many hometown companies created and started by locals such as Dough Girl.

Also, Soundview Millworks creates great personalized cutting boards out of mahogany and maple with stainless steel boat cleats for a good grip.

Summertime Weddings

As I approach my one year anniversary, I decided to post some design inspiration pictures from our wedding last summer in the Central Park Zoo. I had so much fun planning all of the details for our special day.

First, I wanted to start with a theme. Since the zoo is home to many beautiful exotic birds, I decided to go with a birdcage theme. Cheree Berry assisted me in designing an invitation with a gold leaf birdcage and envelope liner with the skyline of Manhattan. We only had about five months to plan this, so we had to get these done quickly.

Since the wedding was black tie, I ordered some white linen cocktail napkins and had a friend embroider them with the same logo at the top of our invitation. I wanted to use blue and white for the main colors of our decor. So, the napkins were embroidered with blue.

Then, I rented beautiful blue cut glass wine glasses from Classic Party Rentals for our signature drink at cocktail hour.

While I was shopping at Scotts Market in Atlanta with my mother, I found these great antique orange and lemon prints. We decided to incorporate a little citrus flavor into the wedding since it is summer, and have my mother (the artist) replicate these prints into paintings! A great way to brighten up the space and fill the void spaces around a solid white tent.

With the bird theme and the blue white linens and citrus tones...we continued this program in other accessories for the guests.

I handpainted these simple white chinese fans with blue designs that you can purchase from this website. Get out your paint and be creative!

On such a hot summer day, I was glad that I had bought these rattan fans to keep everyone cool. I wrapped a blue silk ribbon around the handles and a small tag with our bird logo.

We purchased tons of lemons, limes, and oranges to fill extra large vases on the bar to bring the citrus theme around...also a great way not to run out of lemons and limes for drinks!

My calligrapher created fun drinks signs with cut out birds in the corner from simple white linen card stock. We had a Love Bird, Monkey Do, Lazy Lion, and Grizzly Bear for the Zoo!

The Bride's cake is one of my favorite rituals at weddings. I met with Cheryl Klienman to design a cake in tune with our theme. While Cheryl has the ability to design a fabulous bird's nest cake with unique birds and eggs...I opted for the lighter fare of a lemon buttercream with marzipan kumquats and lemons. It was delicious and I look forward to thawing out the top this weekend for good luck!!

A custom ritual in the South is to have a Grooms cake along with the Bride's cake at weddings. Being a southerner, I hated to break this rule, so I had a fun candy and cakes table that related to the theme (and a few of my husbands favorite desserts) on the table with little boxes "to go" at the end of the night.

I was so thrilled with my florist, Amy from Seaport Flowers, who did a great job tying together flowers that worked so well with all of the blue and white colors and bright orange and lemon paintings. It was not an easy task to hold me back and balance this theme!

I found the batik patterned tablecloths and had them cut and sewn to the correct size, then used the remaining fabric for pillows on the entrance banquettes and seats around the tent.

Since the wedding was held at the zoo, the bathrooms were simply commercial and I jazzed them up with custom signs for the Ladies and Men. We made small baskets with stone concrete birds full of all the necessities in a bathroom and custom designed handtowels from Caspari.

The lanterns were a great touch with the rosemary branches tied on top, the heat that radiated from the candles on the tin tops wafted the smell of rosemary as the guests entered the tent at nightfall.

Many of our guest travelled from near and afar to be with us on our wedding weekend, so my graphic designer friend Remy Steiner designed these booklets for them to know where to go and what to do while visiting the Big Apple!

P.E. Guerin, an age-old company that specializes in custom hardware, opened their current New York City location in Greenwich Village in 1892. The firm, one of the only foundries of its kind in the United States, creates exclusive products that transcend the definition of hardware with their signature artistic design.

Once you purchase your first P.E. Guerin cabinet knob or faucet, you are hooked for life.

The company also makes furniture such as this fabulous metal etagere that I used to decorate a showhouse for Charlotte Moss.

When starting a new project, I like to begin by specifying materials for the home at P.E. Guerin. Beautiful hardware sets the tone for the type of furnishings and wallpaper I choose for each room. A special doorknob will entice a guest to enter a glorious room filled with cremone bolts and custom hinges with unique finials on each cabinet.
