The first thing to know about making money on social media as an influencer is that while many make the lifestyle look glamorous and carefree, getting there requires hundreds of hours of hustle. Your grid, your timeline, your feed—they all need to be treated like a full-time job.

“If you’re saying you want to make it your career, you have to really go into it with your eyes open and know that it takes a lot of time, a lot of persistence, and a lot of patience,” Money Crashers consumer expert and head of marketing Carly Fauth tells Backstage. “In order for it to become your career, you need to be putting so much time into it that you almost don’t have time for anything else.”

That’s not just about hours in the day; wannabe influencers should settle in for the long haul. “In order to reach the point where you have brands coming after you and to make it something like a career, you have to realize that there’s a lot of trial and error involved. It doesn’t just happen overnight,” adds Fauth.

Now that your expectations are tempered from immediate Kim Kardashian–level success, consider these four tips as you get started:

Only take on what you can carry. When it comes to building your online brand, more is not always more. Dedicating yourself to regular, high-quality output on one or two platforms instead of five will be to your benefit. “If you’re not going to take the time to be consistent and post on them, it almost doesn’t even make sense to have them. Why have them if you’re not going to keep up with them?” Fauth says. “Pick the platforms that you feel most comfortable with and be consistent with your posting.”

Divide the personal from the professional.People are following you for your dedicated niche content, not your family and pet photos. Fauth advises aspiring influencers to make two profiles: one for professional content, the other for private friends and family. “Don’t be posting a bunch of different things. Try to keep it in your niche.”

Speaking of niche, nail yours down to stand out from the crowd. Fauth admits that it’s not always easy to find something to do on social media that no one else is doing, but squaring off a singular take on something universal is key to building an audience interested in what you have to say. “You need to find something that you’re passionate about. When you’re passionate about something, you’re more creative with it.”

Lastly, for creatives looking to vlog or create a web series, don’t be afraid to take risks. “You’re putting yourself out there a little bit in the creative realm—you can’t be afraid of what people are going to think,” Fauth says. “You have to kind of go into it believing in yourself, believing what you’re posting, and just be confident about it.”

It’s only after taking these steps, building a foundation for your voice and content and finding a dedicated audience, that money can be made. Brands will back what you’re doing through initiatives like brand ambassador deals, ads bought within YouTube channels, invitations to participate in affiliate marketing campaigns, and more. When those factors are all lined up, you’re ready to do some outreach and ride the wave.

“Once you start to gain a bunch of followers and you start to gain some traction, reach out to some brands with ideas of how you can be a brand ambassador—and don’t be afraid of rejection. Don’t be afraid of putting yourself out there,” Fauth says. Much as you would write a cover letter when applying for a job, create a template to send out to those you want to work with, personalize it to the brand you’re pitching, and wait for a response from your future collaborators. “It takes hustle a lot of the time, especially when you’re starting out, before you’ve made a name for yourself.”

If you're out of work because of a coronavirus shutdown and are looking for an opportunity, be warned that earning money on YouTube isn’t quick or easy. But with persistence and a well thought-out strategy, you can fatten your bank account. Here’s what you need to know

How to build an audience

Nothing you do matters if people aren’t watching. You won’t need a million subscribers to see returns, but a sufficiently large or sufficiently dedicated audience is key. Depending on whom you attract, some revenue streams will work out better than others.

When designing your channel, you need to find a niche that you enjoy and others will find valuable. You’ll get the best results if your content can be made quickly but is still worth following on a regular or even daily basis.

To get more hits, try using descriptive titles that include popular keywords. That will give people and search engines a clear idea of what your video is about. Adding tags will also help. For example, if your video is about baking, use specific words that relate to your video, such as chocolate chips.

Invite guest YouTubers on your channel — or appear on someone else’s — because you can get a huge boost either way. Other YouTubers have their own followers who will now know about you and the content you provide.

Lastly, pay for YouTube ads. It can get costly but will allow you to directly target prospective viewers. If you target the topic of “house pets,” your video will appear before all those people watching cat videos.

How to earn money through advertising

First you’ll need to sign up for a Google AdSense account, connect it to your channel and enable monetization. Once you have enough viewers watching and clicking on ads, a few pennies will start to trickle into your account.

Then you’ll want to join the YouTube Partner Program. You don’t need to join to use AdSense, but the program offers access to other income streams, like YouTube Premium’s subscription fees and Super Chat.

To apply for the YouTube Partner Program, you’ll need a minimum of 4,000 “valid public watch hours” in the last 12 months, more than 1,000 subscribers and a linked AdSense account.

How to maximize your advertising dollars

While it’s easy enough to get set up, the challenge is building a channel that pulls valuable ads while sustaining enough viewers to engage with those ads.

Not all ads pay the same amount. A lot of factors can affect the dollar value, including the topic of your videos. Before you begin creating, research the value of different AdSense niches and see whether your content aligns. Insurance and online education are among the most valuable.

AdSense also favors videos it considers “safe.” That means avoiding content that can be sexually suggestive, contains violence or profanity or drugs or covers controversial and sensitive subjects. Otherwise, Google can exclude you from revenue.

For example, a channel focusing on environmental politics might not make bank, but tips on how to live green (buying an electric vehicle, cutting down on waste or making your home energy efficient) might do better.

Since greater authority and popularity mean more ad revenue, this method for monetizing your YouTube channel is a longer-term play. However, you have other options for scoring returns sooner.

How to make money without ads

Whether they want to be more independent or are put off by the restrictive nature of what Google considers “safe,” YouTubers employ multiple ways to make money. Here are some popular alternatives to running ads:

SuperChat donations

This method is available to creators who are willing and able to perform live. While watching your stream, viewers can donate to pin a comment to the top of the chat window.

SuperChat works well with Q&A sessions, interviews and gaming — anything that gives your audience a chance to participate and hear back from you.

YouTube Premium

Viewers who pay to sign up for YouTube Premium get to watch videos ad-free, along with other perks.

For example, someone who lost 50 pounds in three months could talk about the vitamin supplements they took during the process. The key here is not the size of your audience but an authentic relationship with viewers who trust your authority. Just remember to disclose that your video is #sponsored.

Selling merchandise

Working with affiliates might not be your thing, but don’t sweat it. You might have a penchant for selling your own products instead, whether that’s T-shirts, mugs, artwork or something else entirely.

Selling merchandise works for creators with a recognizable brand or at least a style their viewers will readily identify with. It’s an extra challenge on top of making content that will constantly drive new traffic to see your merchandise.

What are these "geniuses" forgetting to mention? Oh, just the fact that if you're over 60, your odds of dying are 3.6%. It gets much worse for those over 70-at 8% case fatality rate... and insane for people over 80 - a whopping 14.8% CFR!

But there's something even worse about the coronavirus epidemic. Sure, 1 in 100 does feel like Russian Roulette, but these are still good odds. But what happens when people stop getting medical attention...

By the end of the year, up to 228 million Americans

I know it sounds like a lot. It's not-in fact, it happened before, and not just once. In 2009, 59 million Americans got the H1N1 virus (aka the swine flu). Up to 45 million Americans get simple flu every year. And back in 1918, when the US population was a bit over 100 million people, close of 1 in 3 American men, women and children got the virus.

Why am I telling you all this? Because it's important to realize that saying that "the coronavirus is like the flu" is like saying that Hurricane Katrina was "just a storm". Understatement of the century. Because the coronavirus is twice as viral as the flu.

A single person infected with the novel coronavirus will, in turn, infect 2 to 3 other people on average. Some experts say it could be even more. By comparison, the number for flu is just 1.3. This means that it takes very little for the new virus to spread-it's been estimated that infections double every 4 to 6 days.

What should you have on hand, in case of pneumonia?

Try to have some Cipro around the house. For kids, Bactrim or Suprax suspension will help, or Avelox.

For asthma and breathing problems, see if you can get your hands on prednisone taper, Albuterol, or Primatene Mist.

For shortness of breath or chest pain, stock up on nitroglycerin 0.4 mg tablets, as well as anticoagulants.

If you got Chron's disease, get prednosine taper. For other gastrointestinal problems, make sure you have plenty of fiver laxative, Prilosec or Kaopectate.

For non-infectious Diarrhea, Imodium-AD will help. In case of a urinary tract infection, make sure you have Bactrim or Macrobid.

Other things you MUST have in your stockpile include: aspirin as a blood thinner; atherosclerosis medication, like Mevacor or Zocor; Coumadin as a blood thinner for stroke; Aleve for arthritis; Zantac for heart burn; Lisinopril or Tenormin for high blood pressure.
