The last of us: No 3d support.

Naughty Dog's Last of us will not support 3D it has been confirmed. The news will come as blow to those feared the death of Sony support for thier expensive 3DTV's.

All the major consumer electric companies have dipped their toes in the murky waters of 3d technology; but up until now, it could be argued that no single entity has gone as far as Sony has in championing the cause. Right from the offset, the company has used its PlayStation brand to promote 3d around the world, in much the same way it used it to promote DVD and Blu-ray before. The Japanese giants have even produced thier own dedicated PlayStation 3D monitor. Since the advent of 3DTV's it has become the norm for high profile Sony releases such as Motorstorm and Gran Turismo to fully support the function. Last year saw Sony release what has arguably become the flagship of mainstream 3D software - Naughty dog's Uncharted 3. Even with a clear drop in reolution; Uncharted 3 was a resounding success in the added depth department and an obvious winner amounst the 3DTV owning community.

With a recent history of outstanding support, especially at trade shows, it confused many when at E3 2012, Sony seemed to go quiet on the technology, prompting many to question whether they remain serious about 3D moving forward, prompting Sony to insist they still considor it to be an impportant feature of Playstation gaming. Chief executive of SCEE Jim Ryan was quoted, on gaming site cvg, recently stating “where it makes sense, 3D technology will be included into our games“.
Hardly the ringing endorsement though - hardly the battle cry for 3D Sony sounded at E3 2011, and now with news that Sony's flagship title for 2013 will not support it, many will be left wondering if the company will continue to back 3d at all going forward.

PS Vita Firmware update (ver 1.80)

Sony have released a new update today for PS Vita owners.
Version 1.80 contains a few interesting features like Cross-controller mode (or WiiU mode if you prefer), video improvments, the ability to control the home screen via traditional buttons and best of all (finally!) - PS ONE Support!!!!!

Metal gear solid 5 for PS4?

Could Konami's Metal gear solid 5 be coming for PS4? A recent Konami job listing suggests it is.
The listing states they are looking for someone to work on "the latest metal gear solid, targeted at high end consoles and PC."
It is also worth noting the image on the listing depicts Big Boss - so could we be in for another return to the pre MGS-1 era? Definitely one to watch!

Sony tech boffins have been busy it seems. Last week they released a list of psp games that would be playable on PSVita at launch, now it would appear they have added more , all of them in fact.
The PSVita segment of the PS store is now live and a quick jaunt into the psp game section of it reveals the entire collection available now for play on your shiney new Vita.

Naughty dog not supporting Vita.

Golden abyss launches alongside the new PSVita tomorrow; but many raised an eyebrow when it was confirmed the game would not be developed by uncharted developers Naughty dog, the talented team behind Drakes three successful outings on PS3.
As it turned out; we had no need to worry, because Golden abyss is fantastic, but it still leaves Vita fans around the world wondering when they will get to see a Naughty dog developed Vita game.
It seemed Naughty dog fans would soon get the news they longed to hear yesterday, when gaming site Eurogamer spoke with Guy Longsworth, Sony vice president of PS brand marketing. Longsworth asured gamers that all their top studios, including Naughty dog, would be supporting PSVita in the future.

However, this may not turn out to be the case. Today, Naughty dog have responded to Longsworth's comments and things do not seem so positive. Anne Meyer of Naughty dog states;

"We're not working on anything for PS Vita,"

Ouch. That is pretty clear to us at this stage, but will they support the handheld in the future;

"I won't say never, ever, but there's no plans for it right now - we've always felt that consoles play to our strengths as a studio the best."
Meyer explained further: "I hate to sound like a treading the line spin-meister here, but I've said that traditionally consoles have played to our strengths - and desires to push the utmost limit of resources and memory our tech and engine.
"That can change with the right handheld, [that's] why I said I won't ever say 'never'. But we haven't encountered that yet - that's why Jak [& Daxter: The Last Frontier] wasn't an internal project for us.
"Of course, I should have expected the GAF hyperbole to go from there - but we've never made a handheld game, so us saying we're not working on anything at the moment shouldn't be some earth shattering surprise."

Not great news then for those, like us, who looked forward to seeing what the elite studio could achieve on a portable platform. Fingers crossed they change their minds.

Mass effect DLC for Final fantasy?

Square have promised loads of DLC for Final fantasy xiii-2 and early evidence suggests it's a commitment the publisher fully intends to deliver on.
It has already been confirmed that Ubisoft have signed up with Square to allow Ezio's Assassins creed costume to become available to FF as DLC. Now it seems that Bioware look set to follow Ubisofts lead and lend their weight to the latest Final fantasy outing. Sources are reporting that, like the Ezio deal, Bioware are preparing a special Mass effect themed costume for FF DLC.
No word yet on what that costume is, or when it will be available, but we will keep you updated.

ken Levine talks PS move for Bioshock infinate.

Psmove support, love it or hate it, is coming to Bioshock infinate and was announced a while ago now, at last years E3.
Not a great deal is known about how motion control will be implemented in the game yet; but anyone still worried about Bioshock support for Sony's glowing lollipop device can rest easy.

Irrational games head honcho,Ken Levine, had this to say;

“It’s fully functioning and it’s there — the game is playable on it, people are playing with it,”

But does Bioshock need PSmove support? Levine thinks it does;

“My goals for it have been fairly consistent: that it gives an opportunity to people who aren’t familiar or comfortable with the DualShock experience an opportunity to get past that.”

Bioshock infinite will be released in 2012 .

Confirmed by Zipper interactive's Chris Roper; a demo of the eagerly awaited PSVita shooter will hit the PlayStation store on the 21st.

Roper states the demo will "give you access to one of the game's Direct Action missions and includes all six operatives and online leaderboard support."

Unit 13 is out in march and will look to give PSViita gamers their first taste of shooty goodness on the new machine.

Whatever happened to remote play?

Rewind to June 2011 and E3; Nintendo took to the stage and unveiled the Wii's successor, the Wii-u, and proceeded to show off some mind boggling features. Perhaps top of that list of features, was the ability the Wii-u had to enable a user to discard their tv's and continue their game on the systems tablet style controller, a dream for gamers the world over who long to take their Skyrim addiction with them to the bedroom or, heaven forbid, on the loo even!
At the same time our beloved Sony was showing off its own new hardware at E3, now called PSVita, then known simply as NGP. Sony would have seen Nintendo showing off their new system and they would have remembered a time long ago when they where launching another handheld, the PSP, and they would have found the WII-u reminding them of their own attempt at, what they call, remote play.
Fast forward now to the tokyo game show 2011; Sony unveil remote play for PSVita, their showcase - Guerrilla game's Killzone 3, running on PS3, controlled and viewed remotely using a PSVita; now possible due to the PSVita have dual analogues.
Sony fans the world over rejoiced; it was a confirmation that the number one selling point of Nintendo's machine would also be available through their Sony bought products.
But what happened next?
Simply put - nothing.
Since the TGS; remote play has all but vanished, leaving gamers, many who plumped for Vita on the strength of Rp, feeling frustrated and puzzled. See, Sony are not talking remote play now - at all. Sony have gone dark on this - why? Whatever happened to remote play? I can see four possible explanations why Sony have become reluctant to discuss remote play - these are my musings.

1) It does not work.

But we've seen it working - we hear you cry.
Yes we have; but ask yourselves this - have you seen it run well?
Even though anyone who has seen Killzone 3 running in Rp will admit it looks awesome, it is widely accepted that there is some degree of lag present, and its clearly evident in some of the demo shown. We all know, lag is the bane of all gamers and I doubt Sony would pass a feature that is not technically perfect, not on purpose at least.
The lag would seem to be a clear issue for Sony in these early days of Rp development and has reared it's ugly head in more recent videos too. Hackers running their PS3 system on cusom firmware have been able to activate RP on their Vitas and have managed to get virtually any game up and running on the handheld. Titles such as Battlefield 3, Red dead redemption and Arkham city have all been demoed on sites like Youtube in recent weeks and months. The one thing all these unsanctioned demos share in common with Sony's own example? That's right - lag!
So will Sony fix the lag and release Rp, or are they hoping that if they keep quiet on the feature from now on, that it will simply be forgotten.
If it's the latter; then such a failure is sure to have all forum dwellers face palming all the way from towns to Tokyo.

2) The publishers are not happy.

Sony have stated that they are not able to provide remote play in the form of one simple firmware patch that enables all titles. In fact, it is down to the publishers to provide title updates to each and every game they want to see work with remote play.

Think about it. You're a big publisher; Sony arrives one day and tells you they want you to provide a patch for your successful PS3 games, they say they want you to enable RP on them. This will enable gamers to play your titles on their PSVita at no extra cost. Basically they are asking you to make your game available on a new platform, you will not receive anything for those gamers now being able to play your game on, not one as intended, but now two separate devices, and then Sony explain that you have to pay them for said privilege. That's right; you have to pay them. You see patching a title on PS3 costs - a lot, bout $40,000 in fact - and all for zero gain.
Now come on; all the publishers I know of are great organisations that care about their customers, but what none of them are is naive, or indeed mugs.
If this is going to be major problem to RP, perhaps then, Sony need to look into new strategies, such as monetising these required patches, giving publishers a reason to care.

3) Sony think PSVita titles wont sell.

It has to have at least, crossed the minds of the Sony hierarchy that, if they press on with RP, original titles developed for PSVita might suffer with regard to sales.
Will gamers buy PSVita games or will they simply opt for PS3 games that can be played on the PS3 or remotely on the portable device. It has to be a question Sony have asked themselves. Perhaps they did not like the answer.

4) Sony are planning something special.

E3 2011 was a long time ago, but 2012's event is right around the corner and this year Sony is rumoured to be facing a bit of a dilemma. On one hand, Sony has stated it envisages a ten year life cycle for the PS3 and is in no hurry to release a PS4 (remember they are only now beginning to turn a profit this gen). On the other hand, they are under real pressure to provide their consumer base with solid reasons to remain with PS3 and not jump to another platform, with at least one of their main competitors launching new hardware at the show, possibly both.
What then can Sony do? It would seem they have two options; the first would be to stand firm and hope the do not lose gamers due to ageing hardware, the second would be to submit and unveil a PS4. But is there a third option? There just might be.
Sony's third strategy could be to extend the life of the PS3 by giving the platform something new, a new spark of life as it were. Remote play could be just the thing to do that in Sony's eyes. If they were to successfully demo a whole new relationship between PS3 and PSVita at E3, their focus being crossplay and remote play, that would surely steal some of the Wii-U's thunder and quite possibly give the PS3 the shot in the arm it will surely need to last ten years - much like we have seen Microsoft do with Kinect.

So there you have it. To be honest, it could be anyone one of those reason why we have not seen remote play yet. We hope it's number 3.

Fifa street demo incoming.

Looks as if a Fifa street demo is heading our way soon. The demo allows you to play the games free play mode as a 5 a side as well as giving gamers access to a freestyle match when they select world tour.
The teams available in the demo are Manchester united, AC Milan, the Adidas all stars and a street team.
The demo should drop around the 28th in the US and the 29th in Europe.

Fifa street is out march 16th.

Wipeout 2048 patch.

A quick heads-up to those planning to pick up Studio Liverpool's new futuristic racer Wipeout 2048. The game is not out until the 22nd, of course, but new players will be greeted with their first update as soon as they go online.
The update shall weigh in at approx 34mb and aims to reduce loading times and fix minor bugs while providing a new music track named Beezledub.

Early signs indicate the patch improves loading times by up to 50% for some gamers.

Could call of duty Vita be an original game?

A minor snippet of news from Guy Longworth (playstation brand marketing) but an interesting morsel nonetheless.
Call of duty was announced, by Sony, as coming to PSVita at last years E3, but details have been slim ever since. It is not know whether the title will be a simple port of this years game (black ops 2?) or something entirely new.
However, speaking to Game trailers, Longworth has mentioned that his teenage sons are looking forward to the new Call of duty for vita this autumn.

"Of course in the autumn, they're really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita," he said, adding, "and we think that's going to be an absolute game-changer for the platform."

This is somewhat noteworthy as up till now Call of duty games have settled into a familiar November launch window and autumn would put this new Vita game ahead of that. It seems unlikly that Activision would seek to launch this years entry on Vita before the usual formats. So does this mean Call of duty Vita is a new game entirely?

MLB: the show goes crossplay.

During a recent demo in Washington, MLB: the show developer Ramone Russell has shown off new crossplay features shared between the psvita & Ps3 versions of his game.
It appears you will be able to play in season mode on PS3 and continue that mode on the your travels with Vita.

“You dump 20, 30, 40 hours into a mode, and it’s time to go on a business trip,” Russell said. “You save that file up into a Cloud. Pick up your PlayStation Vita. Take it on the road. Download it from the Cloud and you keep going. And it works vice versa.”

Russell went on to show other interesting interactions with crossplay; including one that allows the gamer to play the game on PS3 using the Vita to track the movement of the ball in real time.
The PS3 game is looking set to feature 70 enhancements with the Vita version sharing 65 of them.

Exciting stuff - other developers take note.

We were all disappointed to hear that we would not be able to play our PS1 titles on the PSvita - but we all knew it was just a matter of time - right? Well it seems now that, thankfully, we wont be waiting too long and PS1 titles will now be playable soon after launch.
