Treatment options depend on the which stage the cancer has progressed to. Unfortunately, mesothelioma often is not diagnosed until the cancer is in the late stages of development. Because few people are diagnosed early, there are no reliable statistics for 5 year survival rates for the early stages of mesothelioma. Patients with sarcomatoid and mixed mesothelioma had a poorer prognosis. Of the patients with these types of mesothelioma only 20% were alive 2 years later and by 5 years later, all had died. Because its symptoms are vague and its onset can be slow, mesothelioma carries a poor prognosis, with a median survival time of only 6 to 18 months after diagnosis. Prognosis in this disease is difficult to assess consistently because there is great variability in the time before diagnosis and the rate of disease progression.

Factors that affect the prognosis for mesothelioma include the tumor size, the amount of fluid in the chest or abdomen, and whether the tumor can be completely removed. The prognosis for mesothelioma will be determined by subjecting the patient through physical examinations and certain medical tests. For those patients who are diagnosed of peritoneal or pleural type of cancer, the mesothelioma prognosis of these types is often bleak or depressing. Since there are various persons who are suffering from mesothelioma, the prognosis will also vary from one person to another. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that typically occurs due to exposure to asbestos. A mesothelioma prognosis depends on the stage of the disease and the age of the patient at the time of diagnosis.

Prognosis. Malignant mesothelioma usually is advanced by the time it is diagnosed, so the outlook usually is poor. On average, the survival time after diagnosis is about one year. Typically the most important variable determining the prognosis and life expectancy of a mesothelioma patient is the stage of the cancer when it is diagnosed. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is more difficult to "stage" than other cancers. The epithelial type accounts for 50% to 70% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma, and has the best prognosis (slower growth, more likely to respond to treatment).

Pleural mesothelioma is a difficult cancer to treat because it can spread so extensively and it is generally not diagnosed until it is in the more advanced stages, making surgical removal of all the cancer difficult or impossible. Pleural mesothelioma patients have a poorer prognosis if they are experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, inability to perform daily tasks, weight loss, or a low red blood cell count.

For many asbestosis patients the mesothelioma prognosis is maybe hopeful. Study indicate the epithelial cell type have been associated more often with a favorable prognosis. Cell type plays a role in a mesothelioma prognosis analysis. The two types of cells that develop into mesothelioma cancers are epithelioid cells and sarcomatoid cells. Over ninety percent of all mesothelioma cases are of these varieties. Currently, the average survival period for a patient diagnosed with mesothelioma is about one year.

The prognosis, therapy (including types of chemotherapy) and treatment choices are similar whether the cancer is pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma. It would suggest that mesothelioma prognosis and survival may be more dependent on individual differences among patients. For many asbestosis patients the mesothelioma prognosis may be hopeful. Mesothelioma prognosis and mesothelioma treatment options depend on the size of the tumor, the stage of cancer, potential surgical removal of any tumor, and the amount of fluid in the chest or abdomen. The mesothelioma prognosis is determined through physical examination and the results of a number of medical tests designed to evaluate the rare asbestos cancer.

Numerous factors affect a mesothelioma patient's prognosis such the level of the cancer's progression. Though numerous factors affect a patient's prognosis such as age, overall health, and the type of mesothelioma the patient is battling. A stage four diagnosis of mesothelioma means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body and tumors have already penetrated organs and tissues.

In large retrospective series of pleural mesothelioma patients, important prognostic factors were found to be stage, age, performance status, and histology. A mesothelioma prognosis generally is eight to 18 months but new mesothelioma treatments can assure you a much longer prognosis for life expectancy. The mesothelioma prognosis for an individual who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma is not good.
