I posted this several weeks ago but decided it was worth visiting again.  Have you ever really thought how far $5.00 will go?   After being a couponer so long, I guess I just forgot how much things actually cost.  After giving it some real thought, I wondered, how do people get by without couponing?

For example, in this picture are some items I got from a small trip to Publix (yes, Publix, the expensive grocery store!)

Cost to me for these four items (excluding tax because it varies wildly around the country) was $3.93.  Yes, $3.93 for the “expensive” mac&cheese, peanut butter and two cans of chunk chicken.   And this wasn’t even that “extreme” of a trip.  The peanut butter was on sale and I had a coupon.  The other items weren’t on sale but I had store and manufacturer coupons to stack and both were expiring and I decided that even without a sale, with stacked coupons it was  agood price.

So, there’s my $3.93 worth of groceries.  Not even a full $5.00.

For the NON-couponer that walked in there with $5.00, do you know how many of the above items THEY would be able to get?

These two items cost $4.64, which was as close as I could get to $5.00 without going over.

So for $.71 less I got TWICE as much with my coupons as the average person could get without.

For the non-couponer, all the items I purchased would cost them $8.68.

Hubs and I were shopping the other day. I get him in the store literally ONCE a year to get clothes. He was in need of some new clothes so we made our yearly trip to Kohl’s and scored some great deals – ended up with 5 shirts, a sweater, 2 pairs of pants and a coat for under $200.

While we were there, we were looking a men’s fragrances. He was almost out of his cologne and wanted to try something new. We both loved Nautica Voyage but it was $63!! Even HE thought that was outrageous. In fact, there was nothing we liked that was under $40 a bottle. So needless to say, we left the store without any cologne.

This week’s recipe is Seven Can “Pantry” Soup by Mackenzie at The Centsible Family that is perfect for using what you have in the pantry to serve a hot meal. Prep time should be about 15 minutes and will cook for 4-8 hours and yield about 8-10 servings.

Ingredients:

• 1 can of green beans, drained and rinsed
• 1 can of corn, drained and rinsed
• 1 can of sweet peas, drained and rinsed
• 2 cans of beans, any, drained and rinsed
• 2 cans of broth or substitute with condensed soup
• 3-4 cans worth of water
• pepper, salt and seasoning – optional

Directions:
Add all drained and rinsed products to crock pot. Add broth or soup and cans of water. Add seasoning and cook for 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low.

Notes:
By draining and rinsing the products you are reducing the amount of sodium in the soup and since this recipe is designed to be a “Pantry” soup it means that you can literally put anything in the soup. Canned potatoes, salsa, tomatoes, mixed vegetables, etc. I did not have broth available so I used the beef vegetable soup instead and added more water as needed. It’s important to remember the water as a lot will evaporate during the cooking process. You can also add meat or chicken to the recipe for more protein.

When looking for canned items to keep in your pantry remember to always check the clearance section of your store.

Valentine’s Day is about romance and love and someone special. But it doesn’t have to be about spending a lot of money!

Here a few tips for making it special while spending next to nothing.

• Handmade valentine’s cards are always a good choice…and not just handmade by the kids. :) Get creative and make your hunny a handmade card.
• Create personal, candy wrappers to put around each family members favorite candy bar (think the paper wrapper around a Hershey’s Bar).  A favorite candy bar is a simple, inexpensive but thoughtful gift.
• “Coupons” are a great gift and not the ones we talk about on the blogs all day. But homemade coupons. These can be of the romantic nature or family-friendly. ;) Coupons for one day with no chores for the kids. One day of uninterrupted football for dad. One day that mom doesn’t have to spend in the kitchen coupons! :) The possibilites are endless…
• Valentine’s dinners and dates don’t have to be expensive. Popcorn and a movie in your living room can be a suitable date night!
• Recreate your first date (or your first Valentine’s Day or your proposal) to remind your special someone how the two of your started, how far you’ve come and that you’d do it all over again. :)
• Write a sincere love note and frame it.
• Cook dinner together instead of going out. Plan the meal and shop for the ingredients together. Then go home a prepare it together.
