turned out to be a sunny August Sunday. We travelled on the Clipper from Seattle to Victoria in about 3 hours. I'd personally suggest considering alternate transportation if it's affordable. There were people literally getting sick on the ride there, and the food and ride over was on par to that of an airplane.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 301px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipxNQ9AMJfG3OV4ImUnRDmz87nUhlAZ2X-T6GlnMSfxx8jyvnFTUvuBVGS48AFnfhkeAVMYiLvhk8YRFhv5q7VsAuB4Ndm0rB869Kfu5uk1B8gdOx42uyphU8aPhZXuRc36ZdtXLpKhnx1/s400/232323232%7Ffp538;6%3Enu=3265%3E93;%3E3;8%3EWSNRCG=34;2;2643432%3Cnu0mrj.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511042641816672018" />

When we arrived we left the rainy day in Seattle behind the find a lot of sunshine, flowers and people shuffling about. We began by hunting down the Choux Choux Charcuterie, which was closed on Sundays. Strike one. So, we headed back towards the water and found the Cactus Club Cafe, which had good food and is led by the only Iron Chef in Victoria, Rob Feenie.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgnvPCKlajw6HzAQ84TBD2beexPs0aZ4w_GXz1zDQIU8XKQI1o8A4HA8wcm44557_kknCG5Q4XavULTvpUBo6f-0qGuv2L6I6AcvMMEc9nioa3GJPZDPq1XRz4DgtB4A2oKrLE0Gfs5Jui/s400/232323232%7Ffp537%3C;%3Enu=3265%3E93;%3E3;8%3EWSNRCG=34;2;2765-32%3Cnu0mrj_2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511040091822111362" />

Afterwards we wandered through the Sunday market, not finding too much of interest. Then we came across Chinatown. Chinatown was one of my favorite areas because it had a lot of restaurants and interesting shops. I really enjoyed our discovery of the Fan Tan Alley, easily missed, but worth finding. It was very cute and had interesting shops with original artwork that was both decent and affordable.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1IoipTjwU5wcktsgpVwFHyCjPeWPefnKWnx0xTISeV1KhpWAJyv5GLQOUdYfitKYmAfBb9DBlE4skQ1YL0TEuWnV667Txes3iZegdzGU_6_UdKw2OZfgPNhSNlMXQgOT5y2SA_NUAZ7uX/s400/232323232%7Ffp538-8%3Enu=3265%3E93;%3E3;8%3EWSNRCG=34;2;2644632%3Cnu0mrj_2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511040397390414306" />

After that we headed to Lo Jo (Lower Johnson) for some boutique shopping that proved fruitful. There's some crazy birds out there.

<img style="float:left; But, after a gorgeous weekend at Mt. Adams (2nd highest peak in Washington @ 12,277 ft)

Some friends and I are planning to summit Mt. Rainier on September 1st. Our last big hike was to the Base Camp, Camp Muir. We stayed overnight in order to get a good feel for the altitude, temperature, etc.

It was a gorgeous weekend without a single cloud in the sky. At night (unfortunately after my camera battery died) the sky was a gorgeous navy blue with a perfect crescent moon that was so large it looked like you could grab it right out of the sky.

The photos explain the rest!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV3jQluMTCDoHGQUCvD325pITySgqMlY6EqqtUq4pgn8FnIjN6JdMY4qgNf0xI9ms2CAAydofpp9X2fCr7liu8tyk7QgqpjwadCQL7Niu1-V1h5qTpclpS-JYXycMQpdF7d1NIv-yuX7z6/s400/mountain4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506864773024926162" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGeMEApQCoQyV_xWdW21ZmyeEsAAHwcv0PLN_cmJ2_NgO62Vnv5kR08dQ9ku43-AnTkmZb61ieJFNGO85BfuInuyTpS9Vxs53J4_OkMthqFXuOzrFEGuUcHZaj9Xn2nETMLAGsrGu9p_Pk/s400/mountain3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506864659825299634" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJlnX5z-ampjPRgb9MfhoCbk2YaZ2hhObFEeRVhaYaLsJPLssnbhxLCai2f1kq5Z6O46kPOSo-irdu0XqIZRU92_QgzJloIy9E5bfaFeLDBQeGFn7nVnIu_utzvNvChM7iQj-stiefGM9S/s400/mountain5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506864926001909314" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxB9dXeYhY4MrhtKUQBz87ZgzmPP6hiArwv4qKPFbv6lRGuVysBTfAqi-lX8alJ76oB1_2sb7eQ5PjvHc2NsBp6w4-OOvptXcV2yvCDHU7OswEUK7-qkXjMKPz3ZuNwh3TzD7oQtNvUYc1/s400/marmot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506864495155581186" />

Talk to you after the summit!

Photography by me

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://travelist.blogspot.com/2010/08/base-camp-muir.html' title='Base. If it weren't for the railroads it may not exist today. But, what truly brought Marfa to its current situation was the move of minimalist artist Donald Judd from New York city. He claims he went to Marfa to get away from people, but now Marfa has become a common stop for travelers looking for kitsch. In addition the famed Marfa Lights draw tons speculation and interest. The Marfa Lights even made it on the popular show Unsolved Mysteries.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 270px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJiu0_7Vq-ozAdajDi3VpAYRQ_hlBtyLLx61nEnlvgd78GVAbjXuVlkSuKyyQpdY7FyiECFMm-LzTXtcfHuD67IGMhhg3AmHx__lvjM0Tns7kblMI6vl4eKDb2O4HNvZCxCNwXkcRqsa2p/s400/IMG_4339.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462775624294327746" />

I personally went to Marfa on a road trip with my college roommate to get away from the city and see something new. We successfully saw the Marfa Lights on the first night and roamed around town the next day. Food is hit and miss in this town. There are a lot of modern restaurants, but the hours are often limited to Thursday - Sunday. We went on Tuesday and Wednesday. Also, the food tends to run out if you get there late. Oh the small town charm...

My favorite eats included the Food Shark truck. They even sold Mexican Coca Cola, which is a favorite of mine made with real sugar (not corn syrup). I also enjoyed Cochineal and Squeeze Marfa for breakfast.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 270px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQnz-_fVQe5azHkWDuVefLZ4nE7PC67j9Hurnl3agPcriZaSu1CE0uKjcV3WhxfVuasOLjlMqAGwZ-32oT-CFOXwkObHK4lddWXZ1Uhi1hLZE7iuf8zuAqmXYVeSCjQcnMmuudh9i0uhuE/s400/IMG_4347.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462776222910472514" />

In addition, the art galleries have limited hours. We were able to visit a few though, the Galleri Urbane, Second Floor and Etherington Art. I personally fell in love with a Mexican artist that paints the stray dogs that he adopts. Often times he also paints the back of the painting with another picture. I almost found myself making monthly payments just to own one. If you ever visit, I suggest booking a tour of the Judd and Chinati Foundations. Those are the main attractions, and I wish I had seen them. Also, the art installation Prada Marfa is about 25 miles outside of town, but a must see in my opinion. If you're a Gossip Girl fan, you might recognize the art from the Van Der Woodsen's home.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" That is until this past January when my best friend turned 30 and decided to celebrate there. It was fantastic to see Nicole and her family, as well as meet some of the people that are a part of her life now that she lives in DC. We definitely don't get to see each other often given how far away we live.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcBZRK-WDon5CYWnoyj32G7TPqdRcvp286m0vgWs0FaJQm9ZjK6rnj5Sh3LuNvi0hu0_kaQgiHaI1hL0Wv2GHwa6VKfaOcZO6j6MTZRkW4ffoVROai2cuNFPFmJwPojNUtswZBINTsUNxw/s400/DSCI0217.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433877950021544562" />

Staying in the French Quarter there was plenty to do in the immediate vicinity. We did the cocktail tour together to get the party started on Saturday night - the big celebration. Along the way we went to Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, which was by far my favorite bar. It's the oldest bar in the country.

It was a great place to have fun, while avoiding the really disgusting bars further down the road on Bourbon Street. It's also really dark, so lots of movie stars hang out there to avoid being seen, although I think it's because they love the Voodoo drink. Beyond that, we enjoyed the Krazy Korner because the upstairs area was not too crazy, had pool, people dressed in hot dog costumes and 3 for 1 beers - 'nuff said.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMOuNbUCgqyGQC_YNTT_2xcER4FAIyvH-S4R8NwCOgYHgr8HWdu9uiFqHWt313p_hqPNEDFx-6V5rrHB6yX3Yfs1wcwgdtNQVZJx01AsQV4guli3pcF61ndRF8lCoPfD_UPwCjxxRJ8q1n/s400/DSCI0079.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433880172247303042" />

We had plenty of beignets and coffee from Cafe Du Monde, and the Taste of New Orleans pretty much everywhere else. My favorite red beans and rice were at Oceana. But enough about food.

Is there any good shopping in New Orleans? Yes, but you have to look for it. The French Market was pretty cool, but it would be easy to buy lots of touristy items and feel regret later on. However, they had adorable voodoo dolls for only $1 and I simply couldn't resist. Interestingly enough, my voodoo doll had two white pins in it - which apparently means I can only use it for good.

Beyond that there were some cool vintage handkerchiefs. Further down Decatur street, past the crowds, I found an antique store called Rare Finds. I bought a one-of-a-kind club charm bracelet from a Mardi Gras ball in 1959, with a real pearl and jade. It's fantastic!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOn6xztoEFv76k_Wnv6bEShX71IHRKYgSwtiDRUW8peMlqDN9af1DDvIs-yGnceJwVrR_76xNknNSvLmy_t7Yy4rFL8lsWFQdQ2GvriJmMLznHz7ksRY61X7H9SFqJpv_i86uyLKFjFtIx/s400/DSCI0103.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433880879082729890" />

I didn't stop there. However, as we approached a bridge we found these cute little snowmen that someone had built. I just thought it was a nice reminder that even when things don't turn out exactly how you'd like them, that life has a way of surprising you with something else.

Sorry for the poor image, we left the real camera in the car!

When in Dallas

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIvnKKOiU5q8Myrkb0kLMQCABsCiDkVWSaRUUcwE19a93-ZD9BNgjMz9nrq7hgdy-Z4u5SBLUKwEQxRmOnqjct08AncPLmuC-yaeCpaBeOF7qoWmUTffdbQz0FOFcy81xbRtS00JS3I_FM/s400/Picture+3.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420083955881974082" />

I think it's safe to say, most people don't visit Dallas unless they have family or work there. While growing up I wouldn't have had much to tell you about it either because we didn't typically visit all of the sights unless it was a museum, movie theater or sub-par mall. But, now that I am older I try to take advantage of the trips to visit my family as much as possible. This last trip ended up being a shopping trip because everybody else was sick, but I place all of the other "to-do's" on my list below.

Over the years I've tried to figure out the best places to buy all of those old Chanel jackets that the rich, big-haired Dallas women throw out in perfectly good condition. I knew it existed, but it was ever so elusive. Finally, this time I used my super Google powers (I work in search marketing) and got lucky. Clotheshorse Anonymous moved to the top of my list to visit.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm9t5yiL7wgG8GrfTRgS7IHdeLDXbfCT6omNhc3rZ_Ps0b5t1rE49Ui3DDqLbaq8h0tqOj-up_Aagzac3l6HKcXpex0pnGLoy7e89P_O6Y-7_DoAX7J-pI9CV4OS_Xk6eJJgqn-UW7_W5o/s400/IMG_4202.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420083595214235650" />

Never-worn Miu Miu flats

I was not even remotely disappointed! While I found a yellow Chanel suit for only $600, it was too matronly for my taste. But, there were plenty of other goods available to keep me happy, including a wall of new and vintage furs and fur hats, formal dresses, David Yurman jewelry, Chloe tops, Diane Von Furstenberg dresses, high-end handbags with the tags still on them, tons of Tory Burch, and never-worn shoes. I personally took home the Miu Miu shoes above and a really cute silk dress for only $150.

The hard part about shopping at Clotheshorse Anonymous is sifting through what's practical and what's not. I could have easily spent a fortune in this place and never worn half of the stuff. So I suggest you stay strong and make sure it's something you'll actually use before you walk out. Just remember, that sparkly dress with the tag still on it seemed like a good idea to the former owner too!

Other great things in Dallas:

- View the new Winspear Opera House
(by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Norman Foster)
- See Big Tex at the Texas State Fair and eat fried anything
- Watch Texas kill Oklahoma at the Red River Shootout (at the fair)
- Eat BBQ at Sonny Bryan's original location

Dallas photo found here.

Sweet Casa Alabama

Noccalula Falls, Gadsden, AL

The Brothers apparently have strong roots in rural Alabama. I have never lived there, but my grandfather was born there and moved back there from San Diego almost 50 years ago. Growing up I remember riding in the back of my dad's truck all the way from Dallas to Alabama. Yes, that was legal back then! Then we would hang out, dig up worms, go fishing and wander amongst the cows on the neighbors property. Unfortunately I didn't know about cow tipping back then.

I recently paid a visit, as I had not been there in about 10 years (yes, a bad granddaughter indeed). My grandpa and aunts, who recently moved there, showed me around all of the small towns surrounding Attalla.

Mexican grocery, restaurant and general store, Collinsville, AL

If you know me at all, you're aware that I'm part Mexican. This is mainly due to my grandfather's strong interest in other nationalities, and ultimately, his marriage to my Mexican grandmother after a trip to Baja. So, of course, my grandpa and aunts discovered this great Mexican restaurant in Collinsville. It's totally random that there would be a place so good in the middle of the South, especially in such a small town. They had amazing tacos and salsa. The green salsa with radishes was definitely my favorite.

Driving around we couldn't help but stop at all the cute antique shops in the most random places. After antiquing in Seattle (where it's difficult to find a real bargain) it was pretty cool to see some of the amazing stuff that was being sold for next to nothing. U.S. 11 Antiques was my favorite of them all. I bought an old Finley pocket knife from Japan ($3) and a really cool multi-strand bronze necklace ($5).

In August, there is the world's longest yard sale, Tour de Kalb. I don't know if I like shopping around that much, but the possibilities are sure to be endless.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 270px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhz1XyDvkisajRxPJPM4a9RwDOXPApgPqHsPJM-Dbd5umtM2l8imFdv9yjSUVETIzbMgdNmWqbrAOpDv6AhEgO6y6SZusc4JZbzdRHq-4LLch-4TwS8eZKzq-_qzvWIs6g98jp6zNAXRhR/s400/IMG_4168.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410495036587638802" />

And what is a visit to the South without great barbecue? I was really impressed with O'So Good BBQ and I'm super picky on this subject. We went on Sunday at 3pm and they were literally running out of food because they had been busy all day. The ribs were very tender, the sauce was wonderful and all of the side dishes were great too. I was really bummed that they were out of the fried green tomatoes and peach cobbler. But, I find that you know it's fresh and carefully crafted when they run out of ingredients. The staff was ridiculously friendly, and it was one of the cleanest restaurants I've ever eaten in.

So, enough talking, here are some more pictures:

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" My aunt Judy and uncle Jerry were kind enough to supply the rooms from their time share, making it easy for everyone to join in. While there we also celebrated my aunt Ceilia's 60th birthday. Needless to say, it was very nice to have a chance to hang out with everyone.

While we were there we did the typical beach, pool, food, margarita thing. I also had the chance to do a little shopping and go on a canopy tour. Both of which I will elaborate upon here.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga3Lf3Izrx9HG-DbF4MiirTlkJXwT_D1a0HZqFCWiPd-TCPyXIWbCx8ZKmZjSAN1-oaJp16ty5pElvWy53MERJJgV1AtULTmS724-zL627lHdZxHXPW9ZV21cUZ3flRaCHBlexUDIj6BNI/s400/IMG_3842.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407074006998425490" />

Los Arcos, near Mismaloya in the Bay of Banderas

While seeking air conditioning on our shopping trip I found two one-of-a-kind shirts at a boutique called Sucesos. Sucesos is run by an artist who hand paints each and every item of clothing. While the majority of the items cater to the wealthy older Americans that frequent Puerto Vallarta, there are items painted by the owner's daughter that are a lot fresher and appeal to people in their 20s and 30s. The price isn't cheap, especially considering you're in Mexico. But, the shirts are so unique, comfortable and some even glamorous, that you won't mind the expense.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 270px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNpTQCnMeVVUC_lhy9sspPceFJDow97544nkB0jLVgn7qNdsNmQIBWhhAn-i4n1ml8qrofO2sohXhNiGxqosFltuBjx-8VAP8E17Q8oLTH9R3oNkdsZaOumn-1UXSq4Qg9HyPCnumV8wwm/s400/IMG_3862.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407075391190146434" />

Seeking a little excitement, my cousin, his wife and I all went on a canopy tour with Los Veranos. The guides were very nice and a lot of fun. Over the course of the tour you work your way up to longer and higher zip lines, such as Dos Cojones pictured here. The guides give you a chance to go upside down, spinning and in pairs with their assistance. It was definitely one of the best things I did while there.

Below is the song our waiter sang for my aunt's 60th. However, we didn't have much of a choice as to where we went because we were attending a rehearsal dinner and wedding. Below are my favorite places we visited in Napa, and I do believe there are ways to avoid the crazy crowds, such as:

- Mainly go to wineries that are appointment only
- Avoid the really large, well-known wineries
- Go to wineries off the main streets

Recommended:

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-_ZG96OT8YL-tK1JSAPYjYl5QWBSzdUU8_APko9D7MkjlTE_5p48W_4O4DT5t6wIRBhCnGfrBQOtT-UC35wgzFLKKz2xiWjDZVvgszDojaKW0etwarES8TrGZAKzMpxDgLUy8D1o7XQGz/s400/Swanson+Tasting+Room.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376601724678577586" />

Swanson is a French-New Orleans inspired winery with a fun decor. It was like having a concierge, with a detailed book of restaurants, Voss water and pistachios available while you taste.

My Favorite: 2006 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon, $80 per bottle (available in numerous fine restaurants)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE4UIneDpvCcWxE1940b0TIcUCFaAiTPPaz53ZN5HP5PMqH8uuGEVwjjq34MYce-InnbE376ky3tMzdOpPubQYInZodwv2cmT_Cx5LiWtTzW2DOq7m0qs6IdHyxz65CjPa9mPH__LqqDfU/s400/Cuvaison.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376605959549082754" />

Cuvaison is in the Carneros region, which is closer to the water and cooler. But, in my time there I quickly discovered that things don't always go the way you plan them and enlightenment can mean many unpredictable things.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlu3XaHYqih22tm9iEg_J49DqvlV-Zgqs9XJAlWSj1ZWxLbMZlyOizPZYxP4LYF3aMqHOgnUuf5J-12Gf7VlrBsBZIKwW9gSzYmiOsTRucBJH1-zBJVLD_Pkd1RvqUqvbmPgwJaQtdFaNm/s400/IMG_3387.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223476940755119058" />

Trail to the Ice Climb with Ascending Path outside of Girdwood, AK

Unpredictability can come in many forms, like, for instance, the weather. Alaska had the coldest summer on record since 1980. This meant that it stayed pretty cool most of the days I was there and almost freezing in the evenings. It was actually nice because it meant there was no excuse to not light a fire and sit there for hours, or to pile on as many blankets as possible, comforted by the weight.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidwckzNez_-kfsGiEv46UJ-ycSDtXAghAewSmVtTz2Md_FbSGHTlCbL-ehw2MrgMHVZoZlvMnQyQ5AfjCi0PkePapRkH-pGFFH7jKghC9qcqgR3Vy1BRJun_UXNF7Pk56wRjBWAyWY046L/s400/IMG_3281.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230503512525838066" />

Eric & Brett in Homer, AK

Wildlife is naturally unpredictable as well. Managing expectations is a phrase we commonly use in advertising to make sure clients aren't expecting more than what we're realistically able to offer. One of the things I really wanted to see while in Alaska was a bear. I saw a moose (very rare in summer), elk, reindeer, mountain goats, otters, husky puppies and even some jellyfish. All of these animals were absolutely incredible to see, but yet, I still wish I had seen a bear. Were my expectations unrealistic? Maybe, maybe not, but until next time this live bear cam will have to do.

Food is definitely something I include on a list of things that can be enlightening. However, I didn't really expect to find anything better than what I could get in Seattle. Salmon and halibut are common foods in both locations, and many places do a great job with them. The Mad Fish Restaurant in Seldovia was one of the two places open for dinner on Sunday night, so we showed up as their first guests of the evening. Both me and my friend agreed that they had the best fish we had ever eaten.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ8cSFry9wp-xPWfuZlGjs8d3YoxYTD6aKW_2w3gw3HCMpgsbCgKxH7ZxD6-lwZkTStpIQVvUddWQTbtjlwsXCUNAyg5ilyGcCVTCnETivSMthcubgnMc2FIJZeF1wO8zRv7hxu58-3l41/s400/IMG_3362.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230502272741533554" />

Edge of the Glacier we climbed

The most important form of enlightenment I (re)discovered was how important it is to trust the right people. When glacier hiking and ice climbing you place your life in the hands of those skilled enough to protect you, make sure you enjoy your experience and get home safely. Without the proper attitude, gear and knowledge it is likely that mistakes can be made and injury will result. But with a little research, the use your gut feeling and faith in your peers you can do just about anything.

Alaskan Nightlife: Humpy's, Brown Bear Saloon, The Salty Dawg

Destination Reading: Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

Destination Listening: Into the Wild Soundtrack by Eddie Vedder

My friend Brett's Official Alaska Weather Report

Photography by me

City of Best Travel Deals

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI7AI9cjY4j7FlaqNxKQEh8HGpp6xlYLRe2BKTDU6CfNcFBNmddYC114DmyckHcKI8oN1C7ymuIZ3JNq-l50nkrcdnrBVksipEGWDVfOttIVX5i-E1wEX8jFIEfdsjh3ThYoDLzrR5AzPL/s320/lat_logo.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229321016091561010" />

The Los Angeles Times consistently gives great information on the best travel deals out there. The Huntington Library has an eclectic collection of artwork, historical pieces and botanical gardens all nestled back in a quiet neighborhood just past Pasadena.

One of the current exhibits is "Pressed in Time: American Prints 1905–1950," sponsored by one of my favorite actors, Steve Martin. The exhibit had a few different focuses, including World War II, places of worship, the rapid growth of cities and the California coast. Despite this great variety, they were all tied together with an incredible sense of insight into the lives of people during the first half of the 20th century. The California coast pictures were timeless, showing the natural reoccurrence of wild fires and the beauty of the coast. Also timeless were the prints depicting the contrast between the love of big cities, industrial growth and wealth versus the hatred of overdevelopment, the negative social impacts of the inner city and the impending doom the artists forecasted. Nostradamus?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijpqSuob6AuzlB-taa35HaJuiAJnqpK1AdkaYax_jU7gapOLDTO_Zhhb0383fKXnPfxk45UWhHyFy_UhZtk9VwwmxIYpmIZ9jAY2Gi24FQwzywyfOwrcVVUCHf3j728-tY2f_H_DNyiu-l/s400/IMG_3094.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150586834143812610" />

My favorite part of the Huntington Library is the botanical gardens. I've visited Huntington 4-5 times before but they never fail to amaze me. The Japanese gardens (currently in renovation) and the Desert Gardens are my favorite and a must see. You've likely seen the Japanese Gardens before in the popular TV show Heroes, and the sculpture garden in a few movies, such as the Wedding Planner (horrible movie, great scenery).

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQFqc2bnREOaKT0nCaWwhkFvNXpV38mz6yfmeWEPU7P8ItXhUAKBki9WpZRUaNCV8b14zaDrrR2xyJExJKmRZxLiS3kt3omTYd_rqOPUQK9wP956sQKKYCV0_4H7KZsNPsrpLDieC73q3k/s400/IMG_3099.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150599624556420130" />

If you plan in advance you can have a champagne brunch at the Tea Room. I came across it one day when I was walking to the farmer's market in Ballard. I had walked by the bar numerous Sundays without any interest to go inside, until I saw the strategically placed sign. So, what does this have to do with my travel blog? The grand prize is a $1000 travel voucher from the Magnolia travel agency. Although I have to admit, they had me at Spelling Bee.

Fear not the Scripps National Spelling Bee winner Evan O'Dorney. He lives at least a thousand miles away and has a good 8 years to go before he's allowed to enter the bar. However, amongst the many less-than-ideally educated regulars there have been a few contestants around to keep the contest interesting.

Who will win? But, even still, there are a lot of great things you can do in the area or just a short drive away, some of which you might not find in the tourist manual. Here are my recommendations:

-Visit the MaHaLo Hawaii Deep Sea™ Water showroom have some tea made with the water and stock up to stay hydrated on your trip.

-Buy Alaea salt from a nearby ABC store and grind it over a pat of butter to spread on baguette when you get home. If you put one granule on your tongue and let it sit, you will be amazed at how many different flavors a natural salt can have.

-Get a surfing lesson at Waikiki in front of Duke's. Don't try to go out there by yourself unless you're really good already. Me and my friends have been surfing from time to time and still struggled because there are tourists everywhere, you have to paddle pretty far to get a decent wave and the boards they rent are just plain heavy. So a lesson is worth the extra money.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvDDxGiFKd5E8mtXGWUIn1JlbQCHsYnRluM3lxyx6TQvM8fFsvQWEhmaHYWSyx8rlAcR1lB8020RL0bPaINX0xPX1_IENPKtGmc0_83zHCU0MG3eDqxQvHkuwKiWJPSdSxaEh6NN5ydd8E/s320/858386042505_0_ALB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5102687299305896962" />
-Pineapple County has a lot of what I like to call clubbin' clothes. Not really, my thing. But, if you stay downstairs they do have some great jewelry, including Kenneth Jay Lane. I got a really cute white and gold zebra bracelet with Swarovski crystals. The best part is that you can avoid taxes on large purchases. So, maybe it is time to get that Rolex you've been wanting.

-Maunawili Falls is not the biggest or most beautiful waterfall in the area, but it is one of the only places nearby where you can jump off the falls and swim in the water. It's also a nice 1 1/2 mile hike.

-The Wyland Waikiki is a new hotel that opened about 3 months ago. The Wyland art that is plastered everywhere is utilized in a really tasteful way creating a serene environment. Since the hotel is new, and Honolulu has had lower occupancy rates in their hotels, there are a lot of deals to be had. The rooms are nice and clean, although a little small. They have a great lobby area, a room full of plasmas where you can watch DVDs through the X-Box and a nice pool/hot tub area. Since it is not on the main drag it stays much quieter than the beach front hotels and doesn't have a lot of people wandering around who shouldn't really be there.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhptFJG6eF0NLu4McDUDSRngLp7-a5uhD5jT8FWnifEVxVdpUFw_eL7DWTZ2ujyetS0oKSmZt0xRf2YUkebhZM_g0KC9Afl2ahZsxI1SVaDb63CR0vlC4Mor26Q8JE_h8B7LC2cAWq0AIRK/s320/737436042505_0_ALB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5102692517691161634" />

Destination Reading: Steppin' on a Rainbow (by Kinky Friedman)

Photography by me.

Oh Vancouver, Canada

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0BrKB5V9xwQ8q6Q1n7D8yrwerzHRhrduNxwKvpVsu-Cwh_V_QZhJ6w1yZjBGCQvgSXyLdDeopuvdkjNPjhLX8kcpuZMu-CuJsrTGD-XDpWiTlFT0wJfBS_6mEwf1f03c6jLLSzW0lZ1Ti/s400/IMG_2525.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5067615179367437842" />
About an hour drive North of an alpaca farm in Washington is the Canadian border. Not to be confused with the border going to Baja Mexico, there is a peace arch, lots of green grass temporarily housing Japanese tourists and a mysterious lack of uneasy tension. A stones throw North of the border is Vancouver, BC. To be confused, Vancouver is a melting pot of Seattle and Hollywood, with a dash of I can't put my finger on it.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi_gXGQzdvOtmGThqc-xV5-JS-GmSOmZBYAzDJeM5stBNc5ENH0w7sPSLu9P2Ay8tQ7-eu2rWrZnHTYallsuLur9N8l9GJdZebOwEFDz6_SxitVPXnnNYG-jH-R8Tt_dCndbp4rzlBZ93t/s200/IMG_2537.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5067616077015602722" />When you drive into the city it seems almost like a fairy tale town. The buildings are gorgeous, but give off the impression that they might be run down and then you realize that it's just the general architectural style of the town.* Stanley Park is the same way, absolutely beautiful, but flagrantly exposing it's flaws as natural beauty. Chinatown on the other hand truly is run down (watch out for homeless men purposely jumping in front of your car).

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi67SyKBlqLObPG4g98L1Rd49j3ZT7LQtCvoxOUdoPLuybcSmAytGVSfYFfaNLPLZCFj8y8NwIaQBkN2Ok4-bPP6WnhOesQ-zZ1elwpRh9ChgGmYgIPU18iIOt5qFY48pKL8k7B25Wuimv7/s200/IMG_2581.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5067616566641874482" />Vancouver has a wide variety of great restaurants. At the Gyoza King I immensely enjoyed ramen soup with Kimchi, perfectly spicy and very inexpensive. At Vij's they are generous with traditional Indian appetizers while you wait two hours for your table. Keep your eyes open at Vij's. I'm pretty sure I spotted Kiefer Sutherland eating when we got on the wait list. For the morning after you can get excellent Belgian waffles and crispy bacon at Sophie's Cosmic Cafe.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMxRaeehmz7qhsUNfhbHR6cjtqqeWbVBw6_PwpjaYfOPE6KLOKyeFDZYeEshAVI7rLRzBpYCJs-Od9CGkH_PX15mzjcmgQ9DsWGgyQsfCmS0feX5pVvxIRgjf-3AD9JAUMbkHNzBIXaAK_/s200/IMG_2541.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5067618056995526210" />After finishing your dinner there are numerous options for going out on the town. I chose to go to Lift, the bar at the Westin. At Lift you are guaranteed to overhear someone in the film industry using it as a means to pick up on chicks. Outside there is a gorgeous view of the city and a firepit to sit around. What I enjoyed most was talking to all of the business men that were in town hanging out buying me drinks on their company card. A perk when going out at hotel bars.

I didn't have a lot of time to go shopping, but after wading through a lot of orthopedic shoes I managed to find a beautiful pair of French sandals at Umeboshi and instantly fell in love with almost everything available at Eugene Choo. In the same area of town there are also numerous thrift stores and boutiques carrying local designer clothing.

I suppose confused isn't the best description of Vancouver, it's more like a low-key fusion restaurant.

Photography by me.

Updated 8/24/07
*I was so humbly informed that Vancouver was coined the "City of Glass" by Douglas Coupland.

Arrivederci Venice

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxlwOMAnPRZPGNyhzP6HA4o85PsATolwOxekcpUP7IDxvS3_Eehm_KwXJQxDTSbHOGhD6vRXM0k4IKeQoOxM7Q13zCTSQb8zFN5kq9Dx1e5Cd1HG4HvSFebe4iGwB1X4eehnnp5Blcy9AV/s400/IMG_3092.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150348059731958754" />
I recently moved to Seattle for a new job. I lived in Venice California for almost three years and will miss it greatly. So, I wanted to share with you my favorite parts.

Despite the vastness of Los Angeles, Venice has a great small town feel and you can't help but bump into people you know around the neighborhood. The local watering holes are the most common places this occurs. My favorites include the always shady Red Garter, the trendy Otheroom and the 98% male Hinano's, a great place to lift your spirits when you haven't been asked out in a while (e.g. Shannon was chased down the street by a guy that just couldn't sleep at night without knowing if he had a chance with her, she was {fortunately} engaged at the time).

Venice has some great food too.

Breakfast: Rose Cafe (patio)
Sushi: Shima (completely hidden & totally worth finding)
BBQ: Baby Blue's (I suggest the brisket)
Coffee: Groundwork's is a local farmer's market fave
Thai: Pam's Place (not on the menu: beef and eggplant)
Chinese: Mao's (the orange peel chicken is excellent)
Pizza: Abbot's Pizza (you can't go wrong...)

It wouldn't be my blog if I didn't mention shopping. There are a ton of shops, new ones everyday, cropping up on Abbot Kinney that have great stuff. So, whether you need modern furniture, antiques, art work, japanese street wear, limited edition shoes or rare specialty books, you're sure to find something unique for your collection.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeKybM4n8qKfo_tkNxofzH6cPxN3RqtppIxx_1xTP8OY_XsTq8fIwGN6cyM0cxe6sB6X45ec8rMwkbqA2-d-kDEZMQ69mm99d2JRVUPAIMZihHciQdWRRC7v-fqEePCrRcOillhAoUI8Cv/s400/IMG_3089.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150347608760392658" />

Although the beach is super touristy there are the occasional good finds, such as cheap sunglasses, discount Havianas and enough incense to make Gandhi proud. However, my favorite thing about Venice Beach is definitely the large crowd of old school roller disco dancers that gather on Sundays. The drum circle doesn't hold a candle to it, although it is still quite interesting in its own hippy, flashback way.

Another excellent place for people watching is Gold's Gym. I was a member for quite a while because there are so many crazy people to watch. I immensely enjoyed watching my out of town visitor's reactions to the daily freak show.

Last, but certainly not least, Venice is home to some amazing architecture. The Gehry House, Binocular building and man-made Venice Canals are my personal favorites. And with the influx of more and more young money the local architecture firms have been creating a lot of great lofts and homes.

But alas, what I won't miss about Venice is its median home cost, $965,000, which is actually down from where it was a year ago at $1,011,000.

For some Venice flavor at home:
Rent Dogtown and Z-Boys, read the Venice Surf Report or watch the Venice Beach Cam.

Photography by me.

Lonely Planet: Opportunity of a Lifetime

If you've ever wanted to be a travel writer you must enter this contest.
