Happiness and its fallacy

For some days now, I've been seeing "happiness is free" plastered everywhere and it made me sit down to actually think about the truthfulness of the statement!

Is happiness really as free as we think?
I think not. It's popularly know that to achieve something, you must give up something either small or big, of which happiness isn't an exception.

Experiencing true happiness comes with a tag. It comes with a battle for freedom.
Freedom from shame, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, fear of the unknown, free from the memories of the past that wont stop haunting you, freedom from peer pressure, and mostly fighting to love and accept yourself.
You have to fight your demons, no matter how big or small and defeat them.

That kids in the pictures above with their bright smile fought the demons of poverty to get that smile.
My late grandfather was blind for over ten years, yet i do not know anyone more cheerful and funny like him.
That happy cancer patient on his death bed has a million and one reasons to be sad and moody but chose to be happy instead.
Beautiful Sarah Bernhardt who dropped from fame to poverty was still happy even when she was being wheeled to the theater to have her leg amputated

You think it's easy to live in darkness? You think it is easy to have a leg amputated or not to be faced with the probability of dying anytime? You would think it is easy to just accept all these, to br broken and shattered, but it isn't!
These people paid heavily for the happy face you see every time, these people accepted the inevitable, they accepted their problems and decided to be happy.
They fought real wars in their mind for that genuine smile you see.

To be truly happy, you have to fight some things and when it looks like it can't be conquered, you accept the inevitable.
You just have to accept what Epicetus told the romans centuries ago, he said: "the only one way to happiness is to chase worrying about things beyond the power of your will".
Accepting the inevitable is harder than you think, you have to consciously train your mind to believe you're beautiful, you have to train your mind to accept your flaws. you have to train your mind to know that you're unique....... The cost of happiness goes on and on.
As a friend once said, "happiness comes with a price tag, if you're smiling, you already paid for it in the past". I couldn't agree more!

Prof. Sophie Oluwole- Nigeria's Mamalawo dies at 83

Nigeria loses an Icon- her only Mamalawo.
Professor Sophie Oluwole popularly called Mamalawo- a female version of the Yoruba word Babalawo died at the age of 83.

Professor Oluwole who was one of Africa's top philosopher was the first female to get a doctorate degree in philosophy.
She was born at Igbara-Oke in Ondo state in 1985.

She had her primary and secondary education in Ife and during this time, she criticized the educational system. Then she proceeded to the University of Lagos to study History, Geography and Philosophy before she finally focused on philosophy.

After her first degree, she got employed as an assistant lecturer in 1972 in the University of Lagos, then went ahead to get her PhD in philosophy at the University of Ibadan.
A phenomenal accomplishment that got her to be known as the Mamalawo.

She was a Yoruba philosophical thinker and author whose work was influenced largely by African and western trado-religious beliefs.
She believed that the African philosophy predates western philosophy, as the ancient African philosopher Orunmila predates Socrates by her estimate. She did a wide comparative of the two in her book- Orunmila and Socrates.

This scholar during her days also played the role of an activist by calling for the abolition of some anti-women laws.

In 2014 she was among the G8 philosophers of Philosophy Magazine, an elite group from around the world who have made significant contributions to the profession and various schools of thought.

Until her death, she was a senior lecturer at the University of Lagos and the Chief Executive Officer of Centre for African Culture and Development.

Temisan Samson Eyitene- Student with 8 carryovers who ended up being the best graduating student in the department of Mathematics and Economics

I just have to share this with you all! This is one story you all need to hear and share with someone!
After talking to Oluwakemi Igiehon (Uniben best graduating student)and Orji Success(PBB fist class graduate), I Ijust couldn't stop! I wanted to talk to everyone i could see! I wanted to hear their success stories and this led me to TEMISAN SAMSON EYITENE, the best graduating student in the department of Mathematics And Economics

This is one heart wrenching story. This is the story of a man filled with staunch determination.

Below is my conversation with Eyitene Samson.
OLUFUNKE FOLU: Congratulations Sir, I'm Moronfolu Olufunke, I own a blog and I'm quite fascinated with people that have accomplished phenomenal feats and i would love to write your story for the world.
EYITENE SAMSON: Thank you very much!

OLUFUNKE FOLU: How would you describe your performance in secondary school??
EYITENE SAMSON: hmmm, relatively speaking i was an exceptional student as I was the second best graduating student in my school then but generally speaking I was just an average student because i didn't really put much work in my studies. I was just freelancing and it wasn't until i got out that i realised how much i played.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: So tell me about how the Mathematics and Economics journey started.
EYITENE SAMSON: (laughs) I left secondary school at the age of 15, i applied to the University Of Lagos and was given mechanical engineering but i was rejected because i was too young. I took it in bad faith then but the rejection made me sit down and think about what i would really love to study. I had always wanted to study medicine and surgery, which was as a result of societal pressure. But within the two years I was at home, i realised i was interested in Economics and getting a combined honours in Economics and mathematics will prepare me for a career in finance.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Then i guess, the rejection was a blessing in disguise.
EYITENE SAMSON: Yes it was, I came into the University of Benin as a Pure Mathematics student and it would surprise you to know that i had 8 strong carryovers in 100level and i wrote those carryovers till my final year! That happened because i transferred from Pure Mathematics to Mathematics and Economics and i was made to write the Economics courses i didn't write before. In fact i missed some exams because i didn't know what i was doing.
It was a known fact that transfer students always spill for two years and when they do, It's with a 2-2(a second class lower). But i thank God I was not just able to graduate with my mates, i also emerged as the best graduating student.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: You mentioned something about transfer students spilling for two years, how were you able to break this jinx?
EYITENE SAMSON: Being the best wasn't on my mind when i was transferring, all i wanted was my double honours. Like i said earlier i got 8 carry overs in 100level, i was in two departments and both department had bulky courses, I couldn't register all my courses in 200 level which automatically gave me carry overs again! My 200level result came out and my GP wasn't what i wanted, i felt bad but i adjusted and put it behind me because it was a norm for transfer students. In 300level, my result was just there! But in 400level i told myself i wasn't going to go with what everyone was saying, I told myself i was going to graduate with my mates.
I never expected to be the best graduating student anyway. In first semester 400 level, i was the best student, i was surprised to see the many A's, even the carry over's i was expecting to have C's or D's as were the norms in Uniben ended up with A's. Then my course adviser called me, obviously he was surprised with my performance and said they would have mentored me if they knew i was that good! But it was too late for that, so i gave second semester the same determined shot as i did in first semester, and I think that was what launched me to being the best in my department.
At the beginning, i was almost giving up, I was devastated but i told myself i had to be different, i had to graduate with my mates, i told myself i could do it, and glory be to God, here I am!

OLUFUNKE FOLU: What was the maximum time, you have ever read for?
EYITENE SAMSON: hmm, if you notice, you'll see I'm myopic and my doctor said i can't read at night, so anything from 8pm I'm supposed to be either asleep or not doing anything that will affect my eyes. So when most of my mates were reading in night class, i was always in the hostel. It made me feel really bad cos i wanted to read, but if i do, it will affect my eyes and i might be unable to read for a week. Reading during the day is almost impossible, because i was in two separate departments and they are not located close to each other, so i always had to move around school which automatically leaves me exhausted during the day, but I akways read my books during the breaks before lectures. I read at every chance i had during the day and coupled with the grace of work it really worked for me.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Wow! So what advice do you have for undergraduates??
EYITENE SAMSON: hmm, I'll say go for whatever you want, don't fall back because of what people are saying around you, using myself as a case study, i wouldn't have achieved all this if i had listened to the stories about spilling i heard, we were over 90 students in 100level but less than 20 of us made it to the final stage. So just go ahead and set your goal,be focused and tell yourself you're good enough to achieve it, regardless of what people around you are saying.

Eyitene Samson had a rough beginning, he never even thought he could emerge as the best, all he wanted to do was just graduate with his mates.
I'm sharing this because someone somewhere needs to see this.. You think you're swimming in your carry overs or missing scripts?? It's never too late to motivate yourself and be the best! If Samson could do it, then so can you!

It's a beautiful Sunny and remarkable day in Benin as University of Benin had her 44th convocation and prize giving ceremony.

I went ahead to interview some outstanding students also, one of them is Orji Chukwuebuliem Success a scholar from the Department of Plant biology and biotechnology who graduated with a 4.62CGPA.

Orji is someone who has decided not to be pushed to the ground, this is someone who believes that who he has inside him his greater than what he's ever going to face.

Orji is someone who believes he will always come out good and strong no matter what life throws at him.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Could you please tell me about your family??

ORJI SUCCESS: Well, my parents are both petty traders. I'm the second son and also the second child out of a family of 8.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: How would you describe your performance in secondary school?

ORJI SUCCESS: I was just a normal student, maybe some would say i was smart and intelligent but I was an average student because never really read to pass.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: What promoted you to choose PBB?

ORJI SUCCESS: Well! I didn't actually apply for PBB, i applied for Medicine and Surgery and Uniben pushed me to PBB, at first i wasn't happy but then i realised that i had to hold on to what i have and hold it strongly. I believed i could make something worthwhile out of PBB if i could concentrate well.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: How was your financial status in school???

ORJI SUCCESS: After secondary school, i stayed back at home for so me years before gaining admission and during that period i worked and gathered some money.

My clearance fee in 100level was all from me, my parents tried their best but i also supplemented their effort. I never expected any monthly allowance from home, so i dabbled into business to maintain myself, but God really helped me. God made me fruitful on every side.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Were you a library fan??

ORJI SUCCESS: In my 100 level i read in the library, but i really frequented the place then because i had no smartphone and i needed to make use of the textbook. I'm the kinda person that can read anywhere, anytime and fully understand but i assimilate better at night or after sleeping. I also learnt from my colleagues because i believe no one is an island of knowledge.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: what was the maximum time you have ever read for??

ORJI SUCCESS: hmm! At a stretch?? I would say 10 hours, but after then i never tried it again.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: So what would you like to do?? Will you dive into the labour market or further your studies??

ORJI SUCCESS: for now, I'm only concerned about money! I'll need money for my masters so i think I'll work for a while before furthering with my books!

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Did you hold any position in school??

ORJI SUCCESS: hmm, yes! I was a leader in fellowship. I attended CASOR,and held position from 200level to final year.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Wow, that's quite a responsibility! How were you able to handle that with your studies??

ORJI SUCCESS: hmm, that is where self discipline and management comes in. I understood that i could combine both together and one wont affect the other.

At a point i made it a rule to read for three hours, no matter how busy i am. I really saw God at work, he blessed me wirh quick understanding.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: thanks a lot sir! So what is your advice for undergraduates???

ORJI SUCCESS: Hmm, the first thing i will say is that you should know and understand yourself, don't do things because others are doing it! Don't go to night class because others are going. and know what you want and passionately work towards it.

Be disciplined and determined and you will have evetrhing you desire.

Uniben overall best graduating student- Microbiology Scholar, Miss Igiehon Oluwakemi

It's a beautiful Sunny and remarkable day in Benin as University of Benin had her 44th convocation and prize giving ceremony.

It was graced by dignitaries from all over the country.

As usual, University of Benin graduands left everyone speechless as outstanding students from different departments were called out.

I was able to talk with some of the graduands including the overall best graduating student of Uniben- MISS OSARUMWESE OLUWAKEMI IGIEHON who graduated with a whopping CGPA of 4:91 from the department of Microbiology.

Her humility and soft nature awes me.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Could you please tell me about your family??

MISS OLUWAKEMI: Well, my mum is a sales rep for a publishing company and my dad is self employed at Warri. I'm the first child among three children.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: How would you describe your performance in secondary school?

MISS OLUWAKEMI: Yes! I was just a normal student im secondary school, a student with academic challenges.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Challenges like what??

MISS OLUWAKEMI: At a time i had issues with Mathematics, i wasn't doing well. Then i decided to work a little bit harder and i realised that true success is in God. It was when i gave my life to Christ in SSS3 that i began to do things exceptionally, i began to excel in class even to the point of having the best WAEC result in my school.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Wow!

MISS OKUWAKEMI: it was just the Holy Spirit at work.

When i gained admission into uniben, things were not really nice in 100level, probably because i was trying to adjust to the environment and other things.

But then in 200level by the grace of God, i got motivated to study more and also to commit my ways to God's hands. I would always write the grades i wanted in each subject every semester down and pray to God for grace to attain such grades.

In 300llevel i emerged as the best student in my class, 400level i was the prize winner and today I'm the best graduating student in the University of Benin.

It's being God all the way, and my family and well wishers have been very supportive and wonderful.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: What would you describe as your lifestyle in school??

MISS OLUWAKEMI: (laughs) most people would think, i lived the triangle life and of course, they are right! I am an introvert that is just trying to get better, so my social interaction was limited.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: I assume you visit the library alot

MISS OLUWAKEMI: (laughs) yes i did! I had a special spot in the library. I go to the library during the day and night class in the evening.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: That's a "jackophyte" talking! what was the maximum time you ever read for??
MISS OLUWAKEMI: hmmmmm, 6-7 hours. Mind you, it wasn't at a stretch, i would take a break then come back. I wasn't the 15 hours kind of person, God just blessed me with swift and divine understanding.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: What were your best and worst moments in school??
MISS OLUWAKEMI: uhn! My worst moment was in 100 level, we were having a pbb class which was supposed to be a practical class and i left my practical book in the hostel and without the book i won't be able to do the practical. I was also meant to submit it that day because it had all my assignments in it. I thought i was going to fail the course so i started crying and everyone was laughing at me.
My best moment is today! I'm so so so happy!

OLUFUNKE FOLU: How would you describe your finance in school??
MISS OLUWAKEMI: Finance has always been a challenge right from primary school, but I'm grateful to God, as he has always made a way.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: What advice do you have for the undergraduates?
MISS OLUWAKEMI: My simple advice is that, they should remember God in the days of your youth and also do everything with all their might and strength.
True success comes from God alone, so God will bless you as long as you believe in him and work diligently.

OLUFUNKE FOLU: Congratulations once again ma, thanks a lot for your time! I won't want to hold you more than i already did.

MERFREY HELP FOUNDATION (NGO Benin)

It was an exceptional day in the history of MERFREY HELP FOUNDATION as it marked the opening of her head office at Ekehaun road in Benin city, and it witnessed dignitaries from the Peace pact, University of Benin and National Agency For Prohibition Of Traffic In Persons(NAPTIP).

The NGO's CEO, Mrs. Mercy Omovbude started the NGO some years back with the vision to create a healthy environment, restore dignity to individuals, prevent human trafficking. The NGO with two branches in Benin as six units which comprise of the: Elderly unit, Medical unit, Anti-human trafficking unit, Media or publicity unit, Crafts unit, Youth initiative unit. The NGO is fully committed to humanitarian activities at both the state and local level by providing scholarship to the less priviledged, providing skill acquisition programs for people of all ages and helping the widows and widowers.

One of the MERFREY's daughters was also present at the occasion, in person of Ms. Chinaza, a young lady who ran to the MERFREY organisation for help after her boyfriend rejected her for refusing to terminate her pregnancy. The representative of NAPTIP commended Ms. Chinaza for her bravery in refusing to be intimidated or allowed anyone persuade her to leaving the country as thr rave of the community is leaving the country illegally when faced with situations like this. MERFREY organisation is open to helping everyone regardless of tribe, age, skin colour or religion. They believe a society where everyone can live a good and normal life is possible. Wedding proposal gone wrong.

She walked out on him!

Not everyone get their dream proposal, this is a comedy skit but i guess it was able to show one of the numerous ways in which public proposal has gone wrong. In this case, the guy is totally to be blamed for it. It is obvious the man removed the ring from the case, so the outline wouldn't be visible from his pocket and it won't give him away (he can't afford to ruin his surprise). But then he should have checked his pocket to ascertain the ring hasen't been misplaced before kneeling down. Lucky him the girl belongs to the Non-agressive female club (it is a new club, lol) and she was patient enough to not give him the slap of his life.

Which brings me to the key point of this video, DON'T MISPLACE THE RING! Check the ring before proposing, check it before kneeling down! Your lady might not be as nice as the girl in this video. The world has enough wars already don't cause world warIII.

I decided to share my horryfying experience on the road of Benin with y'all!
Better grab a seat😀😀

So, I've never for once liked Benin roads, in fact one of the reasons i rarely go out is because of the roads...

There are these sloppy slabs on the road that makes me wonder what the people that planned the roads were doing....

If you want to go up or down, your rickety bus has to cmilb the slab..anytime my bus gets to the slab my heart will just start racing fast, it is gradually giving me a nervous breakdown.

I was always scared of my bus tipping and falling or something (pease, don't tell me about the law of gravity😀😀)

So last last, my fears were actually actualised today...

I was jejely coming back from Ring Road, and in getting to Uselu there was a big flood before us, so my driver hesitated (i guess he was contemplating his move)

Then we (the ladies told the man to just reverse and take another route).

Wetin we talk? The guys on the bus just started saying, " una don start again, oga just continue going, the water is not too much, just drive fast"...

I need not tell you who the man listened to, i mean what do we(ladies) know?

The man continued with his rickety bus, on getting to the sloppy thing, that part of the road i fear most. The man tried climbing up, then kasala burst.

The bus had already started it's ascent up, then fiam the bus stopped.

The bus wouldn't go up, but it was slowly slipping down in a funny way, and to make matters worse i was sitting at the back.

I was scared out of my ass mehn, my greatest nightmare was finally coimg to pass...

Everyone was getting down but i couldn't cos i was scared of the billion parasites in the water (what a semester of parasitology did to me)...

I couldn't breathe well, for fear of shaking and making the bus plunging into the water...

So I just sat with one yansh, gently breathing, thinking about how i should have stayed in my hostel, blaming myself for choosing to come to Benin...The driver tried everything, bus no gree move....

Then the guys started pushing the bus, people walking came to push the bus too...

Then voom, the bus started working and it went up then went down again, which even made it worse.

Then after many wahala and agonising minutes of fear, we were finally balanced on the road...

At that moment, i wanted to just ease myself and do a special thanksgiving for being alive...

Trust me, i felt like i was giving another shot at life😀😀

The near accident shock never even leave my body, when the driver tried going down another slab again, u need to hear how my stomach was rumbling...

I'll never get used to this stuff, i just hope i don't end up having a first clasd case nervous breakdown😀😀

A day to tell you about the Phenomenal JAMES DYSON.

Now, don't be worried! I'll tell you everything you need to know about him! Just stay with me to the end.
Sir James Dyson is a British inventor and an industrial design engineer. He invented the Dual Cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner, which works on the principle of cyclonic separation(enginerrong jargon). He has a net worth of £7.8 billion(hmmmm)...
He didn't just become rich like that! His wealth came from tireless and undaunting desire to be phenomenal!

Guess what, this man didn't even study engineering! He studied furniture and interior design at the Royal College of Art! You're shocked?? Well, i was too! Engineering is a far cry from Art! But he did it!

His first original invention was the Ballbarrow, which was a modified version of a wheelbarrow.
Then he went on to inventing the vaccum cleaner...
This is where the real story starts! Buckle up!

After he got the idea of developing the vaccum cleaner, he partly supported himself with his wife's salary as an art teacher, and after five years and about 5,127 prototypes, Dyson finally launched the "G-Force" cleaner in 1983.

Despite the awesomeness of his invention, no manufacturer or distributor would handle his product in the UK, so Dyson went to Japan to launch it.
The rejection of his invention by the major manufacturers led Dyson to setting up his own manufacturing company, Dyson Ltd. And today, he's one of the strong forces in the UK

I'm not here to tell you things you can see when you check him on Google. I'm here to encourage you and tell you, you can also be phenomenal!
I'm here to tell you that Sir Dyson who had to depend on his wife's salary now employs 3,500 engineers around the world.
I'm here to tell you that Dyson who has invented breakthrough technologies, attented an art school does not have an engineering degree.
I'm here to tell you that even though it took him five years and 5,127 prototypes, he still didn't give up.
I'm here to tell you that the man whose invention was rejected is now among the richest men in Europe
I'm here to remind you that no mountain is too high, no task is too hard, nothing is impossible as long as you don't give up!
As long as you belive in yourself! As long as you don't give up!
