Updated trick for enabling Folder option

Many times Windows users face a common problem. The “Folder Options” in “Tools” menu is not visible. Even It can’t be accessed from Control Panel. Also “Registry Editor” is disabled.
Follow the simple steps mentioned in this tutorial and your problem will be solved:

1. If Folder Options is disabled but Registry Editor is still working in your system, then you can enable Folder Options by editing Windows Registry.
Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter.
it’ll open Registry Editor, now go to following keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\ExplorerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer
In right-side pane, check whether a DWORD value named NoFolderOptions exists or not? If it exists, delete it.

2. If you are not familiar with editing the registry, then you can simply download following file, extract it and then run the .REG file:

How to access the sharing data offline

Access the shared data offline allows you to keep using your shared files, folders and software programs when disconnected from the data server. When you reconnect to your data server, all files will be synchronized to the files on the network.

There are two types of configurations required to set the access shared folders offline available, one for data server and other for client computer.

Configuration on Data Server.

First locate the folders that you would like to share or make new folders then share these folders so they can be accessible to any one on the network.

Now right click on that folder and click on the option "Sharing and security".

A small dialog box will appear with the title "data properties". Under the "Sharing" tab, select the check box "Share this folder on the network" under the "Network sharing and security".

Now set the share level permissions that you want to give the users on every folder. Enable cache of share folders by click on cache button (by default it will be enabled).

Configuration on Client Computer

On the client computer, first open My Computer then click on Tools.

In Tools menu bar, click on Folder Options, a window will appear with the title Folder Options.

Under the Offline File tab, check the option Enable Offline File. Here you can choose the synchronization process "Synchronize all offline files when logging on", "Synchronize all offline files before logging off" and others.

Click on Apply button to save the settings and then Ok button to close this window.

Now sitting on the client computer, try to access the shared folder from the data server.

First Right click on the shared folder and Click on Make available offline.

To synchronizing the offline work from client computer to data server, again open My Computer then click on Tools. Click on Synchronize then click on synchronizing button.

After that down to data server and then try to access share folders by give the UNC (Universal Naming Convention) path of data server. But it will be accessible weather the server is down or up.

There is a software called dvd idle pro which can really increase the life of your dvd drive. By using the Smart Read-ahead Cache,
DVDIdle saves DVD data which will be played soon onto the hard disk cache or RAM cache, and
then feeds it to DVD player.
This allows the DVD drive to rest.

Go to Start -> Run - Type regedit and press enter - On the left hand side tree, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\

- On the list on the right side, look for an entry called 'DisablePagingExecutive'
- Double click it
- Press 1 on your keyboard
- Click OK
- Exit regedit and reboot the computer

To revert to the default setting, follow the same steps as above, but this time, press 0(zero) instead of 1 on the keyboard.

Process Substitution

This trick allows you to use a process *almost* anywhere you can use a file. To illustrate, let's consider the diff command. Most versions of diff require you to pass exactly two file names as arguments. But what if we want to diff something, like the contents of a directory, that doesn't necessarily exist in a file? This is where we can use process substitution. For example, to diff the contents of two directories, you could use:


diff <(find dir1) <(find dir2)

The syntax <(command) creates a named pipe, and attaches command's STDOUT to the pipe. So, anything that reads from the pipe will actually be reading the output of command. To prove this to yourself, try the following:


$ echo <(/bin/true)
/dev/fd/63
$ ls -l <(/bin/true)
lr-x------  1 jgm eng 64 Jul 13 21:50 /dev/fd/63 -> pipe:[31340331]
$ file <(/bin/true)
/dev/fd/63: broken symbolic link to pipe:[31340360]

Similarly, you can use the syntax >(command) to have the command read from the pipe. An example is:


tar cvf >(gzip -c > dir.tar.gz) dir

Obviously, there are better ways to accomplish taring and compressing, but the point was to use process substitution.

The "`/dev/tcp`" trick

Bash does some super-cool magic when you access /dev/tcp/hostname/port. It will create a TCP socket that is connected to the named host on the given port. This lets you easily use network sockets with regular shell IO redirection. For example, the following simply prints the time from NIST:


cat < /dev/tcp/time.nist.gov/13

And YES, you can read AND write to these sockets. Here's how. The following example fetches the source for the www.google.com homepage.

Tips to recover scratched CD's

1. Spread a cloth on a flat surface and place the CD on it.
2. Then, hold the disc with one hand, use the other to wipe the polish into the affected area with a soft cloth.
3. Wait for it to dry and buff using short, brisk strokes along the scratch, not across it.
4. A cloth sold to wipe spectacles or camera lenses will work super m8's.
5. When you can no longersee the scratch,, wash the disc with water and let it dry before playing. Intersting isnt it? Try it right now
I have used toothpaste with good effects before Ive also used car paint cutting compound on deeper scratches. It does leave lots of smaller scratches (as it is a cutting compound after all) but it will remove the worst scratches in most cases.

You can change the Icons Windows uses for folders, the Start Menu, opened and closed folder in the Explorer, and many more.
1. Open RegEdit 2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ Shell Icons 3. Add a string value for each Icon you wish to change. You can add "Open With..." to the Right click context menu of all files.This is great for when you have several programs you want to open the same file types with. I use three different text editors so I added it to the ".txt" key.
1. Open RegEdit 2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell 3. Add a new Key named "OpenWith" by right clicking the "Shell" Key and selecting new 4. Set the (Default) to "Op&en With..." 5. Add a new Key named "Command" by right clicking the "OpenWith" Key and selecting new 6. Set the (Default) to "C:\Windows\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1", C:\ being your Windows drive. You must enter the "OpenAs_RunDLL %1" exactly this way.
