Backing up the EFS on Samsung Devices

We learned on our previous article that the EFS folder is a very important folder to back up regardless if you plan to mess with it or not. There have been horror stories of those who simply failed at flashing their smartphones a couple of times and ended up losing their IMEI.

Before you start messing with your device in any way other than the normal operation, one must back up all the things you can back up. Today, we learn about actually backing up the EFS folder.

Preparing for Backup

Power Levels

Before you back up your EFS folder, there are some things you need to get your hands on. First is to have your Samsung smartphone on full power, making sure there would be no interruption in the process.

Backup Program

Another thing you need is an EFS Backup software. For the sake of the tutorial, we would be working with the EFS Pro application developed by lyriquidperfection of XDA Developers. You can go directly to his thread, or maybe just go to the download page from here:

On your smartphone, you need to enable it for USB Debugging mode. If you don’t know how to do that, a comprehensive guide can be found in one of our earlier blog posts:

We also need to make sure that your device is set up to interact with the program rather than offer up the mass storage mode. Depending on your device, you may have to set it up differently.
On some of the newer phones, this means keeping the phone on MTP connection. There would be no other option to use since both the mass storage and interactive connection has been merged using the MTP protocol.

On some of the older phones, upon connecting the smartphone, it would prompt you for the type of connection you want to use. Otherwise, you need to navigate to the USB Options found on the “Wireless and Networks” settings. The appropriate connection type would usually be labeled as “Samsung Kies” for both situations.

PC Status
For the sake of the EFS Pro application, you should also install the Microsoft .Net 4.0 framework so that the program can run smoothly. Currently, this program runs only on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Running EFS Pro

Extract the downloaded file into any directory you want. Open the folder and look for the “EFS Pro.exe”. Run it like you would a normal program. A reminder would tell you to enable USB Debugging in case you skipped that part of the guide. Choose “Ok” to proceed.

Making a Backup
To make a backup of your EFS, you need to identify first where you plan to keep that backup image. You can either save it to the phone, the PC or both. Back-ups are best stored on both if you still have space on your smartphone. Otherwise, make sure to keep it safe within your PC.

Once you have decided where to save the backup, simply click the “Backup EFS” button. The process would reflect at the bottom of the window with the black background. Once completed, the last line it should say is “Operation Finished!”

To ensure that you always have this data ready, make other copies of the backup and make sure to have it stored in different media as well. You can download and flash a new ROM anytime, but you can’t find another copy of your phone’s EFS data anywhere. It is a unique file that should be kept safe to keep you away from Samsung repair centers.

Swapping Internal and External Memory on Android

Plenty of times, we find ourselves trying to save cash and buy the lowest memory option for our device. On other countries, the lowest memory option is the only option possible. For some, they just feel that the memory options could be better.

Internal memory is something we can’t normally increase without a significant hardware change. Lucky people who have ended up with broken devices sometimes end up with a motherboard of a larger capacity version of the smartphone.

Many of us want that too, but risking breaking your motherboard for a one in a million chance of a free upgrade isn’t quite worth it. We still want a larger internal memory though.

Why increase the internal memory?
Having an external memory for files, music and videos is all good, but the internal memory is what really gets all beat up and used when working with your android phones.

Most of the data installed by apps are kept in the internal memory no matter if some data are allowed to be swapped to the external memory card. Games like installing their game graphics and multimedia on the internal memory, so some phones like the i9003 can’t install more than one or two Gameloft games at once.

Some phones just have crippled internal memory sizes like 4 GB or maybe 8 GB, which is just not enough to keep you going now that apps are taking more and more memory out of your phone.

Internal memory space is a precious resource.

What can we do to increase this space?
Developers have figured out a way to swap the internal memory with the external memory card. This means that you can use a large 64 GB external memory card and use that as you internal memory instead. The internal memory would then be treated as the external memory for files.

Obviously, this trick only works for smartphones that have an external memory option. It would only make sense if the external memory is much larger than the internal memory. If you have a 32 GB Galaxy Note 2, then there is no point at swapping it with an external memory card with only 16 GB or 32 GB in capacity.

What are the drawbacks to this method?
As with every modification, some sacrifices have to be made. First of all, since you have now identified your external memory card as the internal memory card, you can’t just hot swap your memory card with another card on the fly. Internal memory is where apps and data are installed, so if you suddenly take that out, it would cause a huge error for your device.

Speed of processing will also be an issue. Memory cards have speed classes that identify how fast the system can read and write to that memory. Normally, the hardware internal memory is read and written at a faster rate than external memory cards. To make sure there won’t be a hit to your phone’s performance, a class 10 or better memory card is advised to be used.

Messing with you internal memory could also be a hassle for a person who flashes their device frequently. Some ROMs may cause a compatibility issue, while often times, the hassle comes from having to perform an extra step to re-swap the memory.

Devices with a Swap Memory Mod
First, you need to download a special file depending on your smartphone. While all Android devices with external memory support may be able to do this, not all devices capable have a mod readily available. If you need one for your device, you can always approach your favorite developer and have them take a look at the files from other devices so they can port the mod.

The devices below use a special flashable zip file that you can flash using a custom ROM. As you may have guessed, you need root access to swap your memory.

In this tutorial I will show you one way of how you can make a pencil drawing effect using adobe photoshop. I will show you step by step how I create this cool effect making use of filters and blend modes.
This is the layout I made with my pencil drawing photo.

1. Choose a photo that you would like to look like it was drawn with a pencil. Here's mine: a picture of DH playing his bass guitar.

2. Next thing we need to do is turn it into a black and white image by choosing image > adjustments > desaturate (yes that is another photo in the image, a girl can change her mind, right? no need to do EVERYTHING over again...LOL)

3. Duplicate that layer by choosing layer > duplicate layer or by using the shortcut ctrl J on PC or command J on the Mac.

4. Select the top (duplicated) layer and invert it by choosing image > adjustments > invert or by using the shortcut ctrl I on PC or command I on the Mac. Your top photo layer should look something like this now. Kinda spooky huh?

5. Now set this layer's blend mode to color dodge

My photo looks like this now! Yup all white. Maybe yours shows a few black pixels here and there and that's okay too as long as it is not a lot! If you do have a lot of black you might have selected color burn instead of color dodge!

6. It's all going to change when we make the next step, which is choose filter > blur > gaussian blur

you will all of a sudden get something like this

Now start playing with the slider until you get the desired effect (this will be different per photo but make sure you don't exaggerate it either way, too much or too less). You will probably end up somewhere between 5 and 7.5 pixels)

7. We already have a great result by now but maybe you want to do some more fine tuning in the contrast. I would like his hair, beard and eyes to have a bit more contrast and I don't like the grey blots on his arms. So I am using the color dodge and burn tool to fix that (color dodge to lighten up areas and burn to darken). Make sure you set the exposure to about 10% so whatever you do is subtle. Mine is still set at 25% in this image (see? on the menu bar at the top)

8. When you are satisfied then merge the two layers that you have by selecting them both and using shortcut ctrl E on PC and you guessed it, command E on the Mac. You could also go via the layers menu and choose merge layers. Whatever you prefer. Now it's time to add a background paper and blend the 2.

I chose this paper I made for the Life is Good add-on, part of a collab I did with Val C designs because it has a nice subtle texture and because I love the ever so slightly grunged up borders.

9. Paste the paper under the pencil sketch photo then select your photo and choose blend mode multiply (you should play with other blend modes too and see what gorgeous other effects you can create!!)

That should get you something like this:

10. That brings us to the final step, just one last tweak!

Duplicate the photo layer (see step 3) and with the duplicate layer selected choose filter > other > high pass (note that this layer will also have the multiply blend mode and that okay, just leave it like that)

Adjust the slider so you will get a nice sharp effect, I set mine at 1.3

As you can see this layer is all grey and that exactly how it should be. Now change the layer's blend mode from multiply to hard light and adjust the opacity to your likings. I set it at 50 % to get this nice sharp effect and slightly more contrast but not too much. (yep it's that other photo again, but you get the point)

4 Easy Photoshop Techniques to Make Your Pictures Pop!

In this tutorial I will be demonstrating some quick, easy methods for adding drama and/or interest to your shots. As always, talk to me in the Post Processing Section of the Forums with any questions or comments. As far as I know, these methods should work for both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

#1: blur/overlay

Duplicate your picture layer by dragging the layer to the ‘new’ icon in the layers palette (ctrl+j).

Apply a gaussian blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur…). Blur it enough that the detail disappears but the shapes mostly keep their form.

In the layers palette, change the blending mode from ‘Normal’ to ‘Overlay.’

If you look at the before and after, you can see that this method makes the light tones lighter and the dark tones darker while softening it a touch. Basically, it softly boosts the contrast. If you want a more dramatic effect, try changing the blending mode to ‘Vivid Light’ instead of ‘Overlay.’

Try it on all kinds of shots: portraits, nature shots, you name it. I use this method ALL the time. It works so well with everything!

#2: filter the background

This one can be fun… With a picture open, duplicate the layer (as always). Use your lasso tool to roughly select the subject of your image.

Feather the selection by going to Select > Feather (ctrl+alt+d). We want a pretty large feather, so what you input depends on your picture. Try 50 pixels. Go to Layer > New > Layer via copy. You should end up with just your subject on a new layer with a nice feather to it (fades at the edges).
Select the layer copy below your subject layer. Start trying out filters. I used Filter > Brush Strokes > Dark Strokes for this example. Most of the Brush Stroke filters work well with this effect. Using blurs tends to look a little funny. When you’ve got it all done, your layers palette should look a little like this:

That’s it. Try this out with lots of different filters. If you want to tone down the effect, change the opacity of the effect layer. If you want to get more advanced with your subject selection, you can duplicate the layer, mask it out, and use a large soft white brush to paint the subject back in.

#3: neon glow

Have you ever played with neon glow and wondered when the heck you were ever going to use it? Well, it’s time to give it another shot. This can add a touch of color and drama to your shot.

Duplicate your layer, then pull up Filter > Artistic > Neon Glow. Pick a color that you think will complement your shot. In mine, the cat is lit with sunlight, so I went with a yellow to exaggerate that. Start with a glow size of 4 and a glow brightness of 18, then tweak it to suit your shot. This is what I ended up with:

I’ll bet you can guess what’s next. You got it — change the blending mode to ‘Overlay.’ Also cycle through those modes: soft light, hard light, vivid light, and linear light. I prefer overlay and vivid light with this effect.

#4 easy blur

This one nearly passed me by… it’s a wonderfully easy effect to soften a picture. Try it on portraits.

Duplicate your layer and apply a Gaussian Blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) so that the details start to go, but not too much.

Set the opacity of the layer to 50%. This is a great, super-simple way to soften a picture. It can give it almost a dreamy look. Play with opacities until you find something that works really well with your shot.

If you bricked your phone while flashing with CFW, you can unbrick your bricked phone using Navifim to download your original firmware files. Installing a new firmware is to easy just follow my steps and if you know how to flash your phone then just download your firmware file

The Software you need to Flash your phone
1)Download J.A.F. with PKEY Emulator.
2)Download install .NET Framework 2.0 or higher on your computer.
3)Download the latest version of Navifirm and extract its contents to a directory of your choice (no installation needed here)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[NOTE] Format your memory card via mobile or PC or at least delete everything in E:/sys, E:/patches, E:/private and E:/resource (and also same folders in F: if both mass memory and memory card are present as in new phones).

Navifirm steps

1) launch Navifrm in your PC

Open Navifirm Folder, Open "FW" folder.
Open Your Product code Folder.
Make your "RM-xxx" folder, Select & copy all files and paste it in Your Created folder "RM-xxx"
Move the "RM-xxx folder" in Phoenix Product Folder and flash your device with your OFW.

Now follow J.A.F instruction
1) Go to “C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products” and create a new folder to represent your device Type (eg: C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products/RM-596; RM-596 – Nokia N8)
[NOTE] If you have Phoenix installed on your computer this path will be created automatically, if not you have to manually create each folder.

2) Install J.A.F. on your computer.

Copy jaf_nok4models.ini (which should be in the JAF archive you downloaded) and paste it into C:/Program Files/ODEON/JAF
[NOTE] Confirm if you are asked to overwrite an existing file.
Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable and select PC Suite Mode on your device.
Make sure the device drives are installed to your computer

3) Once installation is complete open JAF using OGM_JAF_PKEY_Emulator instead of using the shortcut which appears on your desktop.
[NOTE] This file should be part of the JAF archive you previously downloaded

Click the ‘GO’ button
[NOTE] If you receive an error, try launching again.
[NOTE] If you are running a newer version that Windows XP, we suggest running JAF in compatibility mode.
Wait for the emulator to verify the J.A.F. installation and for JAF to launch.
When you see the error “BOX DRIVER NOT INSTALLED”, click OK

4) Select the BB5 tab on the JAF window. Here you have three options to choose from:

Flashing your device to factory settings

Select ‘CRT 308’.
Select ‘Factory Set’.
Select ‘Factory Settings’.
Now click ‘FLASH’ under Operations.
Wait for the process to complete and reboot the device.

Flashing a new cooked (custom or hacked) firmware

Copy the custom/hacked firmware files (usually uda.fpsx, rofs3.fpsx) to the official firmware folder (eg:C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products/RM-596)
[NOTE] The custom files should replace existing files from the original firmware files. If you don’t see any files overwritten head over to the folder and check if all files match the variant of your device. If not make sure to rename the custom files to match your firmware before you proceed.
Once completed proceed with the rest of the guide

Update your device firmware to the latest version or reinstall the existing one with official files (downloaded from Navifirm)

Select Manual Flash and Dead USB
Uncheck CRT 308 and Use INI.
Wait for ‘Select Phone Model’ to appear.

Find and select your device from the the box which appears and click OK.

1) If your device doesn’t appear in the box you may have to download a newer version of the jaf_nok4models.ini file
2) Place the downloaded file to C:/Program Files/ODEON/JAF and overwrite the file.

The MCU, PPM, CNT and APE Variant will now turn green:

If your device is still not visible after updating jaf_nok4models.ini or if the circles don’t turn green
Go to C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products/RM-596 and rename the .core.C00 file to .c0r
Now go to JAF and uncheck Use INI box.
Next click MCS, PPM, CNT and APE Variant manually one by one and select the following files.

MCU – .c00/.c0r

PPM – rofs2

CNT – rof3

APE – uda

Turn off your device and click “FLASH” under Operations.
A warning message should appear and you should click YES.

Draw a circle: Choose "e0e2ef" color and Ellipse tool (U key) to draw a circle shape

Layer settings: Now click on the circle layer and make layer setting.

You will get it.

Now put this circle shape left bottom of the picture.

Image ready: Go to image ready, take some frame and move your circle shape left bottom to right bottom at every new frame in the animation window as I have done here.

Save file: Now go to File menu > Choose save optimized.

Let's start
Open an image: First you have to open an image in which you want to change the background image. I have selected an image of two person standing in a garden.

Selecting: Make selection by polygonal lasso tool (L key) of the image which you want to add.

Inverse: After selection, go to select menu and click on inverse and press DEL key to remove unselected part of image as you have to add another background image.

Open another image: Now open another image to add as background image. Here, I have taken an office image.

Select Background: Again make selection of the image and go to select menu, click on inverse to select background as I have selected here.

Copy another image: Copy the image you want to make as background. Select all and (CTR + A) and copy (CTR + C)

Add Background image: Now, go to edit menu and click on paste and your file will spread into the selected portion.
