Where can you get a gently used book, a chef's hat, AND a tangy, tasty treat?

Right here! Next Monday, September 19, at 6pm! It's our International Cooking Challenge and Book Sale Kick-off!

We have a few spots left for cooking teams--sign up yourself or as a team with family or friends. Submit an entries inspired by foods of Mexico, Peru, Greece, Italy, China, India, or Egypt. It will be judged by a panel of East Longmeadow luminaries (think school personnel, business owners, and foodies)--and you just might win our signature golden rolling pin and a brand new cookbook! But hurry. . .the roster is filling up fast!

Or just come for first-dibs on the book sale, treats and the festivities!

PS - Fall storytime registration is coming up on Wednesday, September 21, 9:30am, for East Longmeadow residents. (Thursday, Sept. 22, it is open to everyone). Our fall storytime session will start the week of October 3.

Storytimes requiring registration are:
Mondays 10am - Sign me a Story (a sign language class for infants to age 2)
Mondays, 1pm - Preschool Storytime (ages 3-1/2 to 6)
Tuesdays, 10am - Preschool Storytime (ages 3-1/2 to 6)
Wednesdays, 10:30am - Parents & Twos, (ages 2 to 3-1/2)
Thursdays, 10:30am - Parents & Twos, (ages 2 to 3-1/2)

Programs not requiring registration are:
Wednesdays, 6:30pm - Pajama Night Storytime (ages 3 to 6)
Fridays, 10am - Crawl Talk (a social play time for infants, toddlers, and their caregivers)

It's the last week before school starts!
And it's the last week for the iPad Raffle! Have you bought a ticket yet for a chance to win an iPad II? The raffle ends this coming Friday, August 26.

A summer wrap-up note:
- Please come in by September 1 to pick up your GPS art projects from the summer reading program, as we need to reorganize and clean the department for our fall programming. We have enjoyed displaying these fabulous creations, however we need to dust our shelves! If you would like your project back, August 31 is the very last date that we can guarantee it will be here.

A couple fall preview notes:
-Save the date for our International Cooking Challenge--Monday, September 19, at 6 pm. Sign up is necessary. Just like last year, our cooking challenge will feature local celebrity judges, a bonus-points ingredient list, prizes for the winners, and a yum-yum-yummy good time! And just like last year, our Cooking Challenge is the kick-off to our great, big book sale to benefit the Children's Department program fund.

-Save the date for our Fall Storytime Registration--9:30am, Wednesday, Sept. 21, for East Longmeadow residents (Thursday, Sept. 22, for non-residents). Stay tuned for more specifics.

What a wonderful week we've had "touring" Rome! If you still haven't signed up for summer reading- read this for more information. And, remember that all reading from June 15th on counts!!

We want to say a huge GRAZIE (thank you in Italian) to Scott Kepnes for coming and sharing stories and songs with us! Oh, and letting us try his super cool bongos, too!! Grazie to Firefighter Ed from the E.L. Fire department for teaching us great fire safety tips and for letting us sit in the pumper truck!! So cool! We even got fire hats and footballs! Grazie to Leslie Lewis for teaching sign language to our youngest readers in the program! You are great! Grazie to our amazing volunteers, the excellent readers, and their wonderful parents. So, GRAZIE to all of you!!

@11am: ages 3-8, "Fire Safety with the East Longmeadow Fire Department" Join firefighter Ed McCandlish and see what it's like to be a firefighter, even explore a pumper truck!! Registration is required.

Fri. 7/8

@ 10am: birth-3 years, "Sign it Loud and Clear" a special 4-part (Fri 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, and 7/29- all at 10am) baby sign language program. Registration for the 4-part session is required. This program is full.

We have searched for Chichen Itza, met animals, played chess, had mini raffles, met new friends, and of course...done a LOT of reading!! We want to say a HUGE thank you to Lori Swanson from Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, Bogart the dog, and the cutest rats ever (rats cute? who knew?!) Lilly and Bella for teaching about the animal shelter! We really hope to fill up that jar with raffle tickets so that we can donate $100 to Dakin!! Also, big thanks to Dorothy Flieshman of "What's Cooking D?" for hosting a wonderful cooking program. It was so DELICIOUS!

We're off to another country and another wonder of the world this week! Chichen Itza, in Ancient Mexico! We are having a great time with this year's summer reading program. If you're wondering what the program is all about, click here for all the details. And, there is PLENTY of time to still sign up for the program which you can do by clicking here. Then, come in to the library to pick up your official "Time Travel Log" to record your hours read.

We are thrilled to announce our volunteers of the week: Julia Ferrero, Julia Murray, Jessica Buell, and David MacArthur. These terrific junior volunteers went above and beyond on a very crazy week of first sign ups! We couldn't have done it with out them!

This week we will be "traveling" back in time to visit the Taj Mahal and to celebrate we have some great programs, check them out:

Sat., 6/18 10am-3pm: Story Walk for Fathers. Take your family and go for a walk on the E.L. Bike path and read a story as you go! The first 70 families will receive a copy of the book featured! This program is sponsored by the Community Partnership for Children "Pathways for Parents". (The Story WalkTM was created by Anne Feregueson of Motpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library)

Did you sign up to be a Jr. Volunteer?

If so- Volunteer training for our awesome Jr. volunteers is this Wed. 6/8 4:30-5:30pm, Thu. 6/9 3:45-4:45pm, and next Tue. 6/14 6-7pm. Volunteers are asked to attend one of the three sessions.
If not- and you'd like to there are still a few slots available so stop in soon!

Due to the severe weather and power outages the library will be closed 6/2/11-6/3/11.

If you need a place to go- Birchland Park Middle School (50 Hanward Hill E. Longmeadow) has been turned into a shelter.

But, you don't have to wait that long for fabulously fun activities to begin! There is a lot going on here next week that you won't want to miss. Here's the three "P" run down:

Patriotic: The Library is closed Monday, 5/30 for Memorial Day

Paint: The Great Create's Paint fest is this Wednesday, 6/1 and/or Monday, 6/6 from 3:45-4:45 for 3rd-6th graders to help Ms. Jenny transform the children's department for summer reading!! Just drop in after school and we will have a paint brush waiting for you!

Puppies: Join us for a doggone fun story time in honor of PUPPIES and the opening of a new Bark Park in East Longeadow this Thursday, 6/2 at 10:30. All ages are welcome, no registration is required.

This week we are buying our awesome raffle prizes, crafting wonderful window displays, and dreaming up games for the summer. We are also now accepting volunteer applications.
