Djent (is it a genre?)

2012-07-01T16:38:00.000-04:00

Over the past couple of years I've had the privilege to listen to a bunch of really great bands who belong in the musical category of Djent, or do they? Recently I've been seeing on a lot of blogs and websites that Djent isn't actually a thing. Its all just progressive metal with heavy meshuggah influences.... isn't that too fucking much to say? Would it really be a bad thing to just embrace the movement as a new genre and just be done with it? Of course I've no authority at all when to comes to things of this nature but I truly feel that Djent is an actual thing and I love it.

Some of the bands I've been listening to on regular play that could be associated with the genre are

Periphery
Vildhjarta
Volumes
Monuments
The Safety Fire
... and of course Meshuggah.

I've been really critical on this site in the past and some of it I feel was unwarranted. I was unemployed when I started IHBC and i think it really effected how I approached the music I was reviewing. Of course Kanye and Kesha can suck a dick, but that doesn't mean some of the other bands didn't put out some worth while efforts.

Metal is just that its metal... of course there are sub genres and that's not a bad thing. We as fans of metal really need to get off the bashing wagon of some of the less appreciated sub genres. The reason is we are truly in the minority. I actually have no friends who listen to metal, its fucking terrible. We all should really be supportive of the entire genre and stop singling things out to attack. I'm gonna start today and I really hope you will too!

Lykke Li - Jerome (The Lost Session) Video

I love the more organic sound of this revamp. I truly have had a 180 when it comes to Lykke Li and her talent and image. This is what female pop singers should ALL be doing.

Toro y Moi - "How I Know"

Great video! Toro y Moi doesn't disappoint on any end and this happens to be one of my favorite tunes from the new album.

I just posted the official video for this song but damn if this live version isn't just as good.

The Strokes - "Taken For A Fool"

2011-07-08T11:17:00.000-04:00

The Strokes got a lot of shit for their new album and I'm still trying to figure out why. I enjoyed it. I felt it was miles better than their previous effort. This song in particular reflects how awesome the album is. The video itself is pretty cool but the song itself shines with or without it.

Djentive : Vildhjarta are awesome!

2011-07-08T10:24:00.001-04:00

I was browsing for some new shit to listen to on my day off today and I stumbled upon this gem. Vocals that remind me of something that would be in a nonpoint or Ill nino song (which isn't a diss) and the music is Djent as hell. Very good mixture of the two. The opening riff literally gave me a chub.

Hells yes! The album Valhalla Dancehall was released earlier this year and its a beast. You can check out the epic Georgie Ray below and you should make an effort to listen to the rest of the album, it will be well worth your time.

Bunch of newish songs by Coldplay.

2011-07-07T14:00:00.000-04:00

I'm not sure if I've ever voiced my opinion on Coldplay on the site but it goes about like this : I love Parachutes and Rush of Blood and almost EP they've released. I tried REALLY hard to like X&Y but that album and the one after Viva La Pinata are both IMO too electronic and U2ish. The new video entitled "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" suffers from the same issues that I had with the previous albums but then we get two other songs that might be the best stuff since "Rush of Blood". "Major Minus" is the first of the released tracks and it has an epic sound without feeling too over produced and bland. Its got an epicly infectious guitar riff. The second is "Moving to Mars" and not since the Blue Room EP has their been a song that felt as raw in emotion and recording. Its a welcome addition. Lastly is the video for "Every Teardrop" The video, (like most Coldplay videos) is well done. Chris Martin does all the usual shit he does and the band is as far in the background as possible. I just don't like this song as much as the other 2. Make the choice for yourself.

New Video from Sufjan

The Horrors - "Still Life"

2011-07-07T11:00:00.000-04:00

This represents the first time I've listened to the Horrors and I've got to say I'm impressed. the video is pretty entertaining as well. Might get a bit repetitive but what are you gonna do? Find out more information HERE

Djentive? Last Chance To Reason - "Upload Complete"

2011-07-07T09:00:00.000-04:00

Last Chance to Reason has proven themselves in the djent movement and with very good reason. This new video for the son Upload Complete, is a power house in sound and the song definitely sum up the talent the band possesses. Their album Level 2, was released earlier this year.
