Don't feel too bad for Sean though, after the Carrera Cup race he hopped into the Black Falcon SLS AMG which took the overall win in the 24h race!&lt;br /&gt;

Onboard with&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/LehKeen" target="_blank"&gt;Leh Keen&lt;/a&gt; in the &lt;a href="http://www.farnbacher-racing.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Farnbacher Racing&lt;/a&gt; Porsche GT3 R  competing in the top SP9 GT3 class at the ADAC 24 Rennen at the Nürburgring this past week end.    Leh was running in P 17 when the race was stopped because of weather. &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;The Farnbacher car dropped out in the 18th hour ending 141st overall.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A  sick thought: as impressive and terrifying this video is (check out the "code brown moment" at the Pflanzgarten 2 crest!) it's entirely possible there may have been drivers  even faster than Leh in the rain! &amp;nbsp;Insane.&lt;br /&gt;

With a name almost as long as its bonnet, The Black Falcon Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3  took the overall win in the 2013 edition of the ADAC 24 Rennen at the Nürburgring.  The car was driven by DTM ace Bernd Schneider with Porsche Supercup regulars Sean Edwards, Nicki Thiim and Jeroen Bleekemolen.  If winning the N24 was not a memorable enough, Bleekemolen had to run from the track during the night to be at the birth of twins... what a  week end!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Black Falcon SLS was in a hard battle with the Marc-VDS BMW Z4 driven by Martin, Piccini, Buurman, Göransson.  Maxime Martine was at times lapping 40 seconds faster than the rest of the field and had an 8:22.088 lap four laps from the end of the race.&lt;br /&gt;

In third another Mercedes,  the ROWE Racing SLS.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The race was (...shocker) punctuated by rain so heavy it had to be stopped overnight.&lt;br /&gt;

Watching Michael Schumacher tootle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a Mercedes Formula 1 car has got to be one of the most underwhelming moments of our day. &amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;

Granted, the track may have been damp, greasy and covered with more or less obscene graffiti but, c'mon!.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;i&gt;A classic example of this is the current saga regarding the number of pit stops. Voices have been raised to underline the fact that various teams, some of whom got to the podium and others who were quite a way off, made four pit stops in the recent Spanish Grand Prix, making the race hard to follow.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;
&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;It’s a shame that these worthy souls kept quiet two years ago when, at the very same Catalunya Circuit and on the Istanbul track, five of the six drivers who got to those two podiums made exactly the same number of pit stops as did Alonso and Massa last Sunday in the Spanish Grand Prix.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;
&lt;i&gt;In fact, there’s nothing new about winning a race making so many pit stops, even discounting those where it was down to changeable weather. One only has to look back to 2004, when Michael Schumacher won the French Grand Prix thanks to what was a three stop strategy, later changed to a four stopper. That was the key which allowed the multiple champion’s F2004 to get ahead of the then Renault driver, Fernando Alonso, who made three stops. And on that day and we remember it well, our strategy and the tyre supplier were showered with praise for allowing us to get the most out of the car.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

It's N24 week end at the Nürburgring and top contenders paraded through the streets of the tiny town of Adenau on the way to the Green Hell.  &lt;br /&gt;

All the top cars are there: Audi R8, Mercedes SLS, BMW Z4, Porsche 911, Aston Vantage and ...an Opel Manta with the fox tail on the antenna?   Of course,  by now the Kissling Motorsport  Manta is a tradition at the 'ring.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The fight at the top looks to be between Audi and Mercedes with Porsche, BMW and Aston in as spoilers.   American readers will take note of Leh Keen racing in the number 17 Farnbacher Porsche GT3 in the top SP9 GT3 class.    Also, keep an eye on the number 18 Manthey Porsche, though in the lower SP7 class, it qualified  8th overall.   Driving it, four Porsche aces Marc Lieb, Romain Dumas, Lucas Luhr and Timo Bernhard.&lt;br /&gt;

Of course the Nürburgring 24 Hours is more than  just a race, it's an excuse for a giant party with plenty of sausage grilling and drinking, hopefully nobody will be a dick and stop the race by &lt;a href="http://bridgetogantry.com/2/index.php/home/touristenfahrten/509-giant-penis-closes-nuerburgring-nordschleife"&gt;painting body parts onto the track&lt;br /&gt;

Engineer-to-driver radio messages were a litany of tyre saving advices, whilst those from drivers to the pit walls where a string of tyre-related yelling. &amp;nbsp;Even Alonso’s win, despite an evident advantage in performance/wear balance, was in jeopardy before the last pit-stop due to a delamination hint that was spotted just in time by the Ferrari crew.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Neither fun nor exciting if you ask me, and getting worse one GP after the other, which is what should really worry both paddock and fans.&lt;br /&gt;
But what’s even more worrying is the effect that this new joint FIA/Pirelli approach to motor racing is having on the feeder championships, namely GP3.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Barcelona saw the debut of the new car, with improved aero and a 400 bhp V6 engine, a big step forward compared to last year’s turbo powerplant. The performance gain was sensible and in winter testing, with cold track temperatures, drivers were amazed. Anyway, May is considerably hotter and in Barcelona the attention quickly switched to worries concerning tyre wear.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The races, Saturday’s one in particular, proved that the issue was real: Arden’s rising star Daniil Kyvat dropped to P20 after running as high as 4th and his team mate Sainz Jr crossed the line in 15th. Art’s Facu Regalia posted a good sixth time in Quali, but in the race he had to retire with two laps to go after losing a large chunk of tread from his left front, the tyre which has to cope with a tremendous stress in Turn 9, the infamous Campsa corner (see the image opening the post).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Things went a bit better in Race 2, mainly because drivers were well aware of the problem and nursed their rubber to the line, but at the end of the weekend everybody agreed that the situation was far from ideal, and that pushing for more than a few laps would have ended in tyres falling to pieces.&lt;br /&gt;

So what’s happening? As F1 has turned racing into tyre management, its feeder championships are doing the same. GP2 went on that path two years ago and they’re holding the line, and now it’s GP3′s turn.&lt;br /&gt;
But is that the right thing to do? The average age of the GP3 field is 19 years old, and most drivers have F.Renault 2.0, F3 or the old spec GP3 as a background, so they are tackling their first season on high-powered machinery: is tyre management what they should really worry about?&lt;br /&gt;
GP3 already offers very little track time (45 mins. Practice, 30 mins. Quali, 2 Races of 30 mins. each) wouldn’t it be better if drivers could just be allowed to show their talent and outright speed, their consistency and focus, their ability to push from the lights to the flag? These young guns still have a lot to prove, forcing them to drive slower to preserve the tyres means diverting the attention from what should really matter at their age.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

One quality differentiating a great driver from merely a good one is the ability to understand car behavior and articulate it to their engineers so setup can be optimized.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
What Dion is doing in this clip, talking through his own lap, is a very good exercise for anyone racing or even just tracking  as it forces you to be conscious of your choices,  try it sometimes.&lt;br /&gt;

At the beginning of the season all teams were given the same tires, &amp;nbsp;the same way they were given &amp;nbsp;specs for the width of their rear wing or the height of the nose or the displacement of their engines. &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Some teams did their homework and figured out how to successfully to deal with those challenges, some have not.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Lotus, Ferrari, Force India are the teams who worked it out, Red Bull, Mercedes and Mclaren, not so well yet those teams, especially Red Bull have &amp;nbsp;been loudly whining in public about Pirelli and four stops being too many. &amp;nbsp;Never mind that in 2011 when Vettel won, he did so on a four stopper with lap times very similar to Alonso this year ( Check out stats on that bottomless well of stats that is F1fanatic.co.uk &lt;a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/statistics/2011-f1-statistics/2011-f1-statistics-race-charts/2011-spanish-grand-prix-lap-times-fastest-laps/" target="_blank"&gt;Vettel 2011&lt;/a&gt;, &amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2013/05/12/2013-spanish-grand-prix-lap-times-fastest-laps/" target="_blank"&gt;Alonso 2013&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;). &lt;br /&gt;

In the past 20 editions of the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya, the pole sitting driver has failed to win only four times (2011, 2000, 1996, 1994) and the only other win from anything but the front row on the grid had been Schumacher's win from P3 in '96.  Nobody had ever been able to win from a third row start on a track notorious for its snooze inducing races.&lt;br /&gt;

Enter Pirelli and suddenly even Catalunya becomes exciting.  Yes there has been much bellyaching about the tires,  mostly from teams who have not been able to figure out how they work and how to set up their car to make the best of what, after all, is the same for everyone.    Ferrari and Lotus (or better, "Renault" as Mark Webber referred to them as in a grid interview) seem to have figured out a way to deal with them, Red Bull, Mclaren and especially Mercedes, not so much.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"I don't think I can drive any slower" said a miffed Lewis Hamilton only halfway through the race when his engineer asked him to look after the tires more.  Mercedes again went after Saturday headlines setting up for single lap speed vs race pace. &amp;nbsp;Playing this compromise correctly is now the single most important part of a race week end.   Ferrari nailed it, Lotus almost had it with different strategy. &amp;nbsp;Given this it's bizarre Mercedes managed a sixth place with Rosberg on a three stopper.&lt;br /&gt;

Red Bull was never convincingly in it. While Webber had his usual horrible start, Vettel tried to make a go of it but could not get to the front early and make a run for it. &amp;nbsp;After that he had a fairly anonymous race, much like in China.&lt;br /&gt;

Fernando&amp;nbsp;was clever: &amp;nbsp;if you look at onboard replays from his car you can see that, just before turn one at the start Vettel has a burst of speed, KERS no doubt, but Fernando saved his KERS for an attack he planned for turn 3, an idea that came he said from watching the GP2 race.&lt;br /&gt;

Yes Pirelli has to get their act together because delamination like have occurred this past week end are simply not acceptable but everyone has the same burden, they are not going to change much and we had a Spanish GP that was not boring.&lt;br /&gt;

Nine time WRC champion and part time retiree Sebastien Loeb is the factory guest driver for the Porsche &lt;a href="http://www.porsche.com/international/motorsportandevents/motorsport/racing/pmsc/"&gt;Mobil 1 Supercup&lt;/a&gt; season opener in Barcelona this week end.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Supercup is the the top of the heap of all the national Porsche GT3 single make series and runs as support to F1 races.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This year Porsche has decked out one of the two cars it reserves for guest drives in historic Martini livery, making it instantly the coolest looking car on the grid. &amp;nbsp;The race is the debut for the 991 GT3 Cup which will be available to all teams starting with the 2014 season.&lt;br /&gt;

The race was won from pole by Sean Edwards from Nicki Thim &amp;nbsp;followed by Michael Ammermüller.&lt;br /&gt;

Who did not look so happy were Mr. Montezemolo and Señor Alonso, surely disappointed &amp;nbsp;all the new aero bits on the F138 amounted to a hill of beans in qualifying. &amp;nbsp;Alonso let loose some fairly harsh criticism of his own team's tendency to talk much and conclude little.&lt;br /&gt;

But unhappiest has to be Jenson Button who failed to even make Q3, unlike Perez. &amp;nbsp;On &amp;nbsp;radio transmissions you could just sense his frustration, maybe even more. &amp;nbsp; Jenson must be wondering what the heck happened and how did Lewis know... &amp;nbsp; (interesting rumor about Mclaren getting a free supply of Honda engines in the future, wonder if this plays into Woking's current difficulties in some way)&lt;br /&gt;

Rallies are amazing, we don't need to tell you that but they do have a fundamental problem conveying the excitement and the skill of the drivers because they are, essentially, impossible to televise. &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;On board cameras have helped tremendously but there is nothing like watching a rally car from above, slashing its way through a special stage. &lt;br /&gt;

Normally this would be done by a helicopter with all its own inherent limitations and costs. &amp;nbsp; Enter radio controlled drones, maneuverable, relatively inexpensive and able to provide shots a helicopter could never achieve.&lt;br /&gt;
