Flood has announced the release of Porteus 2.0, a Slackware-based live CD with a choice of KDE 4, LXDE, Razor-qt and Xfce desktops: "The
Porteus community is excited to announce that Porteus 2.0 final is now
available for immediate download. This is the first stable release of
our Standard and Xfce editions based on Slackware Linux 14.0. Here are
some of the major changes between version 1.2 and version 2.0: Linux
kernel upgraded to version 3.7.8; Razor-qt replaced Trinity as the
desktop environment for the 32-bit standard edition; all desktops were
upgraded to their latest stable versions - KDE 4.9.5, Razor-qt 0.5.2,
Xfce 4.10 (Thunar upgraded to 1.6.2), LXDE (latest components except for
PCManFM), Firefox upgraded to version 18.0.2; Porteus package manager
now resolves all dependencies such as Python and Perl...."

Download : Porteus 2.0 Xfce

Porteus is a fast, portable and modular live CD/USB medium based on
Slackware Linux. The distribution started as a community remix of Slax,
another Slackware-based live CD, with KDE 3 as the default desktop for
the i486 edition and a stripped-down KDE 4 as the desktop environment
for the x86_64 flavour. The lightweight LXDE is available as an
alternative desktop environment.
Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
(Long-Term Support) for its Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products,
as well as other flavours of Ubuntu with long-term support. To help
support a broader range of hardware, the 12.04.2 release adds an updated
kernel and X stack for new installations on x86 architectures, and
matches the ability of 12.10 to install on systems using UEFI firmware
with Secure Boot enabled. As usual, this point release includes many
updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer
updates will need to be downloaded after installation."
with both community and professional support. The Ubuntu community is
built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software
should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable
by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and
that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their
software in whatever way they see fit. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African
word, meaning "humanity to others". The Ubuntu distribution brings the
spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

This beta release comes in a "base" flavour only which means Fluxbox or JWM, but no IceWM and no office suite. From the release announcement: "antiX 13 beta1 base ISO images are available for testing in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. What's new? Linux kernel 3.6.11; dist-upgrade as of 7 January 2013; more options in meta installer; MuPDF replaces ePDFView and zathura; Midnight Commander removed, use Ranger for CLI file manager; installers now give XFS, JFS and ext2 as options, Btrfs is available, but only use for data, not for installing onto; numerous internal changes to antiX scripts. Enjoy!"
The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 64 MB old PII 266 systems with pre-configured 128 MB swap to the latest powerful boxes. 128 MB RAM is recommended minimum for antiX. The installer needs minimum 2.2 GB hard disk size. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue CD.
to plan, today openSUSE 12.3 beta sees the light. The beta comes with
mostly smallish changes as we're in serious testing waters now – we hope
you're out there to help us clear the way to the final release. The
beta comes with 4.10 RC2 of KDE's workspaces and applications. KDE has
announced a third RC due to some late changes and this version is part
of a testing sprint organized by the KDE Quality team. openSUSE KDE
packagers have build a special live image to test this release but we
urge you to get the beta packages from software.opensuse.org as they are
of course newer."
The openSUSE project is a community program sponsored by Novell.
Promoting the use of Linux everywhere, this program provides free, easy
access to openSUSE, a complete Linux distribution. The openSUSE project
has three main goals: make openSUSE the easiest Linux for anyone to
obtain and the most widely used Linux distribution; leverage open source
collaboration to make openSUSE the world's most usable Linux
distribution and desktop environment for new and experienced Linux
users; dramatically simplify and open the development and packaging

Fedora 18, the latest stable version of the Red Hat-sponsored community distribution of Linux, has finally arrived: "The
Fedora project is incredibly delighted to announce the release of
Fedora 18. What's new? The user interface for Fedora's installation
software, Anaconda, has been completely re-written from the ground up.
Making its debut in Fedora 18, the new UI introduces major improvements
to the installation experience. It uses a hub-and-spoke model that makes
installation easier for new users, offering them concise explanations
about their choices. Advanced users and system administrators are of
course still able to take advantage of more complex options. The general
look and feel of the installation experience has been vastly upgraded,
providing modern, clean, and comprehensible visuals during the process."

Fedora project is a community based open source and free Linux operating
system and considered to be third most popular distribution and
continues to provide innovative features to users. This new release
included several new features such Kernel 3.6, GNOME 3.6, KDE 4.9, Xfce 4.10, LXDE, Python 3.3, Ruby on Rails 3.0 and much more. The default desktop version of Fedora 18 is GNOME 3.6, but you can also download KDE, Xfce or LXDE desktop environments, even you can also download and install Cinnamon and MATE desktops too from the Fedora’s yum package manager tool.
Just few days ago canonical has launched the operating system for Smartphone along with some hardware details and a brief trailer on how the OS looks like.

Ubuntu's take on the mobile OS borrows a fair bit from desktop Ubuntu, as well as other mobile OSes, but it brings some new ideas to the table too. If you've ever used Ubuntu's Unity interface, you'll recognize the icon bar that slides out from the side. If you've ever used a smartphone, you'll recognize the notification bar that slides down from the top. But Ubuntu mobile takes that concept further than any of the other OSes out there.

Although Ubuntu’s mobile software is still in its early stages, an Android version of the Linux-based operating system was announced about one year ago in February 2012. This marked the first step toward a mobile presence for Ubuntu and Canonical chief Mark Shuttleworth says that the software’s Android variant is set to launch this year. No carrier or manufacturer support has been announced yet, but the mobile Ubuntu handset should be provided by a “high end” Android manufacturer, according to The Verge.

Full-fledged Ubuntu handsets are expected to come in early 2014, and this would line up with the company’s production schedule seeing as Ubuntu for Android was announced in early 2012. While we may not be seeing an Ubuntu device anytime too soon, a number of demo phones have been shown off in the UK. Over the next couple of weeks, downloadable images of the development platform will be available for the Galaxy Nexus. This device is the only known handset that will support Ubuntu for now, but Canonical is likely to roll it out to more devices as developers perfect Ubuntu’s mobile ecosystem.

Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy
Linux 5.4 "Slacko" edition, a small and lightweight distribution with
packages "borrowed" from the latest Slackware Linux release: "It's
out! Slacko is one of our flagship puppies, built with the latest Woof
from Slackware 14.0 binary packages. It is all-puppy right through, with
the advantage of binary compatibility with Slackware 14.0 and access to
the Slackware package repositories. Changes: significant improvements
in using the Aufs layered file system; improved automatic detection and
configuration of analog and 3G modems; Samba printing issues resolved;
the X.Org wizard has improved detection and configuration options; many
improvements and bug fixes for boot-up and shut-down scripts.

Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is
that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy
boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep
pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all
applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input
instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any
USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy
disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted

Fedora project team is excited to announce the beta release of its
free, fully-functional Linux operating system, Fedora 18, code-named

these highlighted release features: Fedora 18 offers a brand-new version
of the GNOME desktop, version 3.6, straight from the upstream
development process; updates have also been made to the KDE, Xfce and
Sugar desktop environments; additionally, the MATE desktop is available
for the first time in Fedora; Fedora's new installer user interface
enhances the anaconda installer with improvements in ease of use and

The Fedora Project is an openly-developed project designed by Red Hat,
open for general participation, led by a meritocracy, following a set of
project objectives. The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the
Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system
exclusively from open source software. Development will be done in a
public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Fedora
about 2-3 times a year, with a public release schedule. The Red Hat
engineering team will continue to participate in building Fedora and
will invite and encourage more outside participation than in past
releases. By using this more open process, we hope to provide an
operating system more in line with the ideals of free software and more
appealing to the open source community.

Linux Lite 1.0.2 has been released

Jerry Bezencon has announced the release of an updated build of Linux Lite 1.0.2, an Ubuntu-based, beginner-friendly Linux distribution with Xfce as the preferred desktop environment: "Proud

compatible with Ubuntu software repositories.

Manjaro Linux 0.8.2 "LXDE" has been released

Philip Müller has announced the release of Manjaro Linux 0.8.2 "LXDE" edition, an lightweight desktop distribution based on Arch Linux: "The
culmination of substantial refinements and exciting new developments,
Manjaro 0.8.2 is the most polished, feature-rich, and accessible release
yet. A lot of people asked me for a LXDE edition. Here it is. It has
the same look and functionality as our Xfce edition. With this release
you get a better EFI-support through rEFInd, it includes support for
Steam gaming, automatic desktop notifications for new system updates,
and -- developed exclusively for Manjaro -- a user-friendly graphical
interface to easily manage and maintain the system. A more detailed
overview of the improvements in the 0.8.2 release is as follows: the
default Linux kernel series has been changed to 3.4-longterm for better
upstream support; LXDE got updated to 0.5.5.
Manjaro Linux is a desktop-oriented, user-friendly distribution based on
Arch Linux. Some of its more pronounced features include an intuitive
installation process, automatic hardware detection, special Bash scripts
for managing graphics drivers, and extra desktop configuration options.
Manjaro Linux comes in three editions featuring the Xfce, GNOME 3 (with
the Cinnamon Shell) and KDE desktops.

openSUSE 12.3 Milestone 1 has been released

Will Stephenson has announced the availability of Milestone 1, which is the second official test build on the way to the stable openSUSE 12.3: "News
fresh from the Factory - the openSUSE release team has made the
openSUSE 12.3 Milestone 1 available for testing and feedback. There has
been lots of plumbing in the infrastructure, with most prominently the
removal of SuSEconfig - the capitalization of its name should give a
hint about its age. If you want to get a taste of the upcoming release
or want to help test and develop this awesome, green Linux distribution -
come and get it! With Milestone 1, things start getting interesting.
For starters, the init system continues to evolve rapidly. SysVinit has
now been removed, following some discussion."
The openSUSE project is a community program sponsored by Novell.
Promoting the use of Linux everywhere, this program provides free, easy
access to openSUSE, a complete Linux distribution. The openSUSE project
has three main goals: make openSUSE the easiest Linux for anyone to
obtain and the most widely used Linux distribution; leverage open source
collaboration to make openSUSE the world's most usable Linux
distribution and desktop environment for new and experienced Linux
users; dramatically simplify and open the development and packaging
processes to make openSUSE the platform of choice for Linux developers
and software vendors.

Arch Linux 2012.11.01 has been released

Pierre Schmitz has announced the availability of Arch
Linux 2012.11.01, the latest of the regular installation CD images that
the project providing a popular rolling-release Linux distribution now
makes available at the beginning of each month. This is mostly a bug-fix
release. From the release announcement: "The
latest snapshot of our install and rescue media can be found on our
download page. The 2012.11.01 ISO image mainly contains minor bug fixes,
cleanups and new packages compared to the previous one: first media
with Linux kernel 3.6; copytoran can be used to not copy the image to
RAM on network boot - this is probably unreliable but an option for
systems with very low memory; cowfile_size boot parameter mainly for
persistent COW on VFAT.
Linux distribution targeted at competent Linux users. It uses 'pacman',
its home-grown package manager, to provide updates to the latest
software applications with full dependency tracking. Operating on a
rolling release system, Arch can be installed from a CD image or via an
FTP server. The default install provides a solid base that enables users
to create a custom installation. In addition, the Arch Build System
(ABS) provides a way to easily build new packages, modify the
configuration of stock packages, and share these packages with other
users via the Arch Linux user repository.

FreeNAS 8.3.0 has been released

Josh Paetzel has announced the release of FreeNAS 8.3.0, a free and open-source Network-Attached Storage (NAS) operating system based on FreeBSD: "The

28. Development of the FreeNAS 8.2 branch has come to a halt, as both
ZFS version 15 as well as FreeBSD 8.2 are no longer supported. There

Chakra project team is proud to announce the third 'Claire' release. It
took a good six months of preparations to get to this point, but the
full switch to systemd is here. To do so udev is merged into systemd,
with systemd being updated to 194. This meant a first .so file jump for

Linux 5.4 "Precise" edition, a small Linux distribution built from
Ubuntu 12.04.1 and compatible with Ubuntu 12.04 DEB packages: "This
is it, the very first official release of Precise Puppy. Precise Puppy
is built from Ubuntu 'Precise Pangolin' 12.04.1+ binary DEB packages,
hence has binary compatibility with Ubuntu and access to the vast Ubuntu
package repository. Couple that with Puppy's tiny size, speed and ease
of use, and this is one incredible pup. It is assigned version 5.4 to
indicate its position relative to the other puppies, such as Wary 5.3
and Slacko 5.3.3 (5.4 coming soon). A lot of work has happened at the
'Woof level' since the release of Wary 5.3 in April 2012 - of particular
importance to Precise are the many enhancements to the Puppy Package
Manager (PPM)."

CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive
required at all.
