Tinted Mason Jars

I have a top secret project I'm working on that I thought a colored mason jar would look better than a clear one.

I promise to post once it's complete and has been given to the recipient!

I got this tint recipe here, but I like how mine turned out better!

You'll need:

Gel food coloring

3 T. water

1/2 C. Mod Podge

In a measuring cup (I used a 2 cup size), microwave the water for 30 seconds.

Stir in food coloring.

I used 1/2 jar (each jar is 1/2 oz) Sky Blue by Wilton brand.

Mix VERY well and then stir in Mod Podge.

Leave the mixture sit for a few minutes so the bubbles go away.

Pour into glass container and swirl around to coat the entire inside.

Pour liquid back into measuring cup and tip the jar upside down onto a paper plate (I put foil and then paper towels on top of the paper plate). Leave sit for about 10 minutes to drain excess back out.

I really liked how it looked, so I searched around my house for another glass dish to use my mixture on! All I could find was this lame candy dish!

Bake for 25 minutes at 170.

Take out of the oven when the jar is transparent again.

You may have to bake it longer than 25 minutes.

It will be really hot, so make sure to use hot pads!

I love, love, love how the jar turned out and I CANNOT wait to tint more glass!!

DYI Earring and Bracelet Holders

I am a jewelry hoarder. Plain and simple.

The disaster below is what I dug through on a daily basis to find what I wanted to wear.

I was in need of a serious renovation of my jewelry storage and have seen a few things like this for earrings on Pinterest. I took care of my necklaces (see this post) earlier this year and decided to make something for my earrings and bracelets at the same time.

I used:
1/4" square chicken wire mesh (technically it's called galvanized hardware cloth)
10x13 picture frame (for earrings)
8.5x11 picture frame (for bracelets)
Spray paint
Manly stapler (as in the kind that should not come into contact with paper)
Wire cutter (if your husband is anything like mine, just pretend you don't know what you're doing and he'll take care of this part.)

Take the back out of the picture frame and remove the glass. Cut the wire to the same size as the back of the picture frame so that it can be stapled easily.

If you want the frames to be a different color then what they came, paint them now! Mine weren't wood, but the spray paint would have stuck to them a lot better if they were. FYI.

I sprayed my wire also.

Once everything is dry, staple the wire to the back of the frame and WA-LA.

The bracelets are either hooked through the squares or clipped onto the squares. Easy-peasy!

The small brown bowl in the bottom of the picture above is just painted flower pots that are glued together!! Some jewelry just doesn't work well with the holders above, so I had to have something for those pieces! I bought each piece below for under $1 at JoAnn Fabric.

Loaded Baked Potato Casserole (Quick Version)

My two favorite kinds of potatoes are mashed and baked.
This dish has the best of both worlds!!

This recipe is a weeknight version, so I cheated with a few steps. If you have more time you could mash your own potatoes and cook your own bacon. Working full time all week just doesn't leave me with enough time at night to prepare all of that!!

INGREDIENTS

2 pkgs. (3.3oz each) Betty Crocker instant potatoes

[plus milk and water according to package]

3 T. sour cream

3/4 C. bacon crumbles

2 C. shredded cheese (cheddar or marble jack is best)

2 T. green onions or chives, diced small
Salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. Make potatoes according to package.

3. Stir sour cream and 1 C. shredded cheese into potatoes.

4. Spread potatoes into 9x9 or 8x8 baking dish.

5. Top with bacon, remainder of cheese and green onions/chives. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

6. Bake for 25 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbling.

Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Brownies

I originally found this recipe from Kraft Foods and it just might be one of the best things I have ever eaten!!

INGREDIENTS

1 pkg. brownie mix (13x9 pan size)

[plus water, oil and eggs according to box]

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1/3 C. sugar

1 egg

1/2 t. vanilla

1/2 C. (overflowing) mini chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. Prepare brownies according to package directions and pour evenly into a greased 13x9 pan.

3. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese with sugar, egg and vanilla.

4. Stir chocolate chips into cream cheese.

5. Drop spoonfuls of cream cheese into brownies.

6. Use a knife to swirl in cream cheese. DO NOT OVER STIR!!!

7. Bake for 40-45 minutes.

8. Let cool and keep refrigerated.

9. Try not to eat them all at once.

Garlic Bread Pizza

My fiance, Jake, thought of this recipe that is so simple and so delicious!

First start with garlic Texas Toast. Spread pizza sauce over the top.

Next, add all your favorite pizza toppings! We added pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, Italian sausage and lots and LOTS of cheese!! Then bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 12 minutes and ENJOY!

Kabob Marinade

Kabobs are typically a summer time grill food, but we always seem to eat them in the fall during football season.

This marinade would be really good with steak also, but we use it on venison. It takes the 'game' flavor away and it's the only way I'll eat venison.... other than jerky and summer sausage, I suppose.

This is about the perfect amount of marinade for 1.5 pounds of meat. Two pounds is a little too much and it doesn't seem to all get coated equally.

I set a one gallon zip lock bag in a mixing bowl and pour the ingredients (and eventually the meat) into it. A large tupperware would also work, but I find it's easier to just seal the bag and toss it when I'm done with the marinade.

INGREDIENTS

1 C. vegetable oil

3/4 C. soy sauce

1/4 C. worcestershire sauce

1/2 C. lemon juice

1 small onion, sliced

1 T. dried parsley flakes

1-1/2 t. black pepper

2 T. dried miced garlic

Mix together in bag, add meat and refrigerate at least 4 hours. Overnight is best.

We also add these to our kabobs:

Sliced potatoes
(So good! We've discovered that Cub Foods Brand makes the best canned potatoes. They are small and seem to work the best. And we used canned rather than fresh to save time since they are already soft and just need to be heated.)
White onion
Red & Green Bell Peppers
(If orange and yellow bells peppers are on sale we'll add those too!)
Fresh Mushrooms
(Not on mine!!!)

BLT Pinwheels

We've all seen pinwheels at gatherings.... there are thousands of possibilities for the filling.

I love BLTs and I've never seen a BLT pinwheel, so I decided to give it a go. I'm going to tell you right now though, that I don't have a picture of the pinwheel cut up. We were at the race track this weekend and they were almost gone by the time I was done cutting them up. I guess that means they tasted okay!!

Pinwheels are great because you don't really have to follow a recipe. Add as much or as little of something as you like. Make them for YOU!

INGREDIENTS

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1/3 cup mayonnaise

3 oz real bacon bits (Oscar Mayer makes good ones)

1 roma tomato, diced small

shredded lettuce

4 medium tortilla shells

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

DIRECTIONS

1. Beat cream cheese and mayo with a blender.

2. Spread mixture on entire tortilla shell. If you are able, I would recommend spreading the cream cheese mixture on all the tortillas before adding any fillings. That way all of the pinwheels will have an equal amount.

3. Sprinkle lettuce on almost the entire tortilla, leaving a small portion of one edge with cream cheese mixture only. NOTE: This will give the tortilla something to stick to when rolling it up.

4. Sprinkle bacon bits, tomatoes and shredded cheese on lettuce. Press down on everything lightly.

5. Roll up firmly.

6. Wrap in cling wrap individually and place in fridge for several hours or over night.

7. Leaving the tortilla rolled up, cut into 1/2 inch wide slices.

**UPDATE! I've made this a few more times since this post and have found that it's easier to keep the ingredients from spilling out if you mix everything with the cream cheese/mayo mixture (after blended, of course) and then spread onto the tortillas. Then add the lettuce to the top. Although if you still do it the way listed above, just make sure to give all the ingredients a pat down before rolling the tortilla up.

I found myself laughing so hard at this book that a snort would slip. Multiple times.

Jenny is a little crazy. It's okay for me to say it because she'll tell you herself. And I'd be lying if I said that she wasn't crazy. If you've already read this book you know what I mean!

If you get offended easily I wouldn't recommend it. Actually... I would!

Maybe this is just what you need.

A friend borrowed this book to me and my life is forever changed.

I also learned a few new 'choice' words. :)

I don't want to spoil anything, but there's a part in the book that involves a very large rooster. Nick and I were out and about today and I found my own!! It was $150, so Nick kindly told me HELL NO!

Banana Bread

I love banana bread! Usually I rely on my mom to make it for me, but I was really hungry for it today and she wasn't available. Neither was her top secret recipe.

Actually it's probably not that secret, I just haven't added it to my own recipe box yet.

In the mean time I had to find a recipe myself. So I did a little Googling and wrote down about 5 different recipes. None of them sounded 'just right' to me, so here's my rendition.

It turned out damn good!

Next time I'll add chocolate chips and put the batter in a muffin pan!!
And THEN drizzle a little more chocolate on the top!

Yum! I better go get more bananas!

INGREDIENTS

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter, softened

3/4 cup brown sugar

2 eggs, beaten

2-1/2 cups overripe bananas, mashed (about 5 medium bananas)

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1 tablespoon sour cream (trust me)

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350

2. Combine flour, baking soda and salt

3. In a separate bowl - cream together the brown sugar and butter

4. Stir in eggs, bananas, vanilla and sour cream

5. Mix on low for 10 seconds to blend well and eliminate large (and medium) chunks

6. Stir in flour mixture, mix well

7. Pour into a greased loaf pan (mine was 9x5)

8. Bake about 65 minutes or until a toothpick entered comes out clean

9. Leave in pan for 10-15 minutes and then cool on wire rack (or wax paper if you're anything like me and think that wire racks are m ore of a pain in the ass than they're worth)
**Please be careful while handling your loaf. It weights about 40 lbs. :)

The true taste test: Is it toddler approved?!

Sharks, Goats and Dinosaurs!

This may be the strangest heading I have ever given a post. But where can you find all three of those animals in one place?! The zoo, of course!

It was a little too chilly for the beach today... I think it was only 50 something overnight, so the water would have been freezing! We decided to take the drive down to the Minnesota Zoo instead. It was the perfect day for a trip to the zoo and I'd forgotten just how great the MN Zoo is.

We were there for about 4 hours and I'm going to tell you right now that Nick was the only one who took a nap when we got home. That's wrong on so many levels...

We had a great time, just check out our pictures!

Evan said this "kitty" was "too big"!!

We loved the camel ride! How cool!

Como Zoo doesn't have anything even close to as cool as this!

Evan even said "Thanks Camel!" when we got off. What a sweet boy!

Moving along to the farm...

The goats were really into Evan, but I'm sorry to say that the feeling was not mutual!

This next picture might look like he's being friendly to the goat, but he was actually yelling at the poor animal.....

As we walked past these two, the bigger one got his head stuck inside the bottom of our stroller. They say you should watch out for lions, tigers and bears (oh my!), but I thinks it's these damn farm animals that will actually give you a run for your money!

DINOSAURS!!

I'll admit that I was probably the most excited to see these guys!

Whoever designed them thought of everything! Even the eyes move!

Evan was totally cool with these tiny dinosaurs until they started growling and flailing their arms! It almost felt like a scene from Jurassic Park....

I hope he doesn't have nightmares. Oh hell, I hope I don't have nightmares!

Anyways, the dinos are WAY worth the extra $4 to see!

And did you know that the first dinosaur skeleton ever found was in New Jersey?!

BUTTERFLIES!

The ONE thing I cared about seeing and this is the participation I got from these two.

I need a baby girl. These two just don't appreciate the 'pretty' things! :)

Evan says flowers are "peeeeee ewwww!"

And my husband really is more charming than he appears in this photo. I promise.

We had a great time! I love spending time with my boys and it's always good to get out of the house. I really wish we lived closer to the zoo, I would definitely invest in a membership! There is so much to see!

NOTE: Although you can't actually see any other zoo guests in these photos, they were there. It was like the freaking state fair. Weirdos included. I'm just really good at cropping them out.... or huffing and puffing until they move on to another exhibit! ;)

DIY Recipe Box No. 2

I miss you!

That's what Evan tells me when I drop him off at daycare each day.

For such a stinker he really can be a very sweet boy!

And hello Friends!! I've missed YOU! But I'm having a very good summer and am spending every possible second with my boys (or shopping). I am thinking of coming back to blogging on a part time basis though, I just miss you too much while I'm away! :) If I'm not spending time with my favorite guys (and you too, Dad!) I've been reading (37 books since the start of 2012!!!) or glued to Netflix watching One Tree Hill - seriously, where has this show been all my life?! Oh yeah, it came out the same year that I met my stud of a husband and I was a little pre-occupied! Anyway, I'm completely obsessed with it. I started watching it at the end of May and will finish season 6 by tonight. That's 130 forty-minute episodes people. INSANE! I don't get excited about TV shows very often, but with the exception of the God awful facial expressions of Brooke Davis, this show has me hooked! Speaking of good TV shows! Breaking Bad started last Sunday. Love it! Actually I'm more excited about the next seasons of Sons of Anarchy (mid September) and Dexter (late October). What have you been watching lately?

I have done some crafting lately - my mother in law and I had a crafting day a couple weeks ago and decorated these little jewelry box/dresser things. I love it and use it for my hair binders, bobby pins and clips.

And I have also been working on a top secret gift for one of my very good friend's bridal showers next weekend. Which I am hosting. :) The bride and groom's bachelor/bachelorette party is the night before, so I better behave myself! Since it's a co-party my husband will be there and keep an eye on me. I'm sure of it. You'll see this top secret gifts just after she does!

Onto other news. Earlier this week I won wife of the year when I agreed that my husband could buy a Harley. He's had a motorcycle since he was a senior in high school and has pretty much wanted a HARLEY since then, so I figured it was time. I will admit that the thing is pretty bad ass! Plus, all of my spending habits are forgiven for awhile! ;)

We also booked our little family trip to Fort Myers Beach in November. I'm counting down! Any restaurant recommendations? We haven't been there for a few years...

We've been going to the beach every weekend and Evan is really starting to love it, so I know he'll be excited to spend a week on the beach this fall.

As far as my shopping addiction goes, I have been oogling over dresses lately. Before this summer I only owned 3 (one of which is my wedding dress!). At last count, I own 13. I don't know what my deal is. Have you found any cute dresses lately??

Lastly, Happy 27th Anniversary to my mom and dad! I am amazed and so proud to call you my parents, you are amazing role models. Congrats!!

Momma B is going on summer vacation.

I'm not actually going anywhere, but you won't see much of me until at least fall. I've put a lot of thought into this and I'm taking a much needed break from blogging. I need to focus 100% on my little man and another 100% on my best friend's wedding in August.

You may see the occasional Birchbox post or weekend recap full of pictures of my little love. But for the next few months I'm going to leave my crafts behind and my camera alone while cooking.

I thought this would be a really great book for Evan. It explains love and God's role in love in a simple form... because let's face it, it is simple! This book is a great way to introduce the concept of love (in all its forms) to toddlers.

My favorite part was about loving someone even though you may not like them right now. It's so true and I think it's important to tell kids that.

"Because we want to love others as God loves us, but we don't always feel like loving them.

Choosing love is always right."

I love that it's a short story because Evan's attention span is pretty short right now. From cover to cover it's only 22 pages, only about half have words and there are great pictures on each page.

I also think that it was a great idea for the pages to be board material rather than paper. Evan likes to help turn the pages and it's nice that he can't wreck the book while he's 'helping'.

Angel Parfaits

Everyone has had or at least seen the age old angel food cake/whipped cream/strawberry concoction. I've taken this dessert to another level.

After this, you'll never go back to that again!

So here's the deal, if you have the time and patience, please make your own angel food cake. If not, buy one from the store! I got mine at Super Target and it was perfectly delicious!

My sweet mother-in-law bought these adorable parfait dishes for me and I've been dying to use them. This little dessert is perfect! Don't worry if you don't have any parfait dishes, you might even be happy with a large cereal bowl! You'll want more of this dessert anyways!

You'll need:

Angel food cake (bundt pan size)

1 pkg. fresh strawberries

filling:

8 oz cream cheese, softened

3.4 oz instant vanilla pudding

2 cups milk

1 cup cool whip, thawed

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Cut cake into small squares.

Wash and cut the strawberries into small pieces.

Whisk together the milk and pudding mix. Let it sit a few minutes to thicken. Blend the pudding and cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Add cool whip and vanilla. Whisk until well blended.

If you're ready to eat dessert: layer the cake, filling and strawberries.

If you're not ready to eat dessert, just put everything in the fridge until you're ready.

And be prepared to eat your heart out later!

This filling recipe makes a little over 3 cups. I don't know what I was thinking when I was tossing it all together, but it's good so I won't complain!!

DIY: Old Window

A friend gave me two of these windows and I've really been thinking about what I wanted to do with them. I finally decided on one of them.

I had a beach picture in a frame behind our couch and I thought it would be cool to put the picture behind the old window.... you know.... like looking out the window at the beach! :)

Since I'm not allowed to touch any power tools around here, my hubby sanded all of the old paint off.

Then I taped the glass and re-painted the window.

Once the paint was dry I used a piece of sand paper to rough up the edges a little bit.

And wah-lah!

It needs something more, but I can't quite figure it out yet.... suggestions?

Buzz Cuts and Independence

You haven't seen much of Evan lately, so here are a few pictures from this week.

Evan's new thing is going shirtless. Just like Daddy!

And we took him to get his hair cut a few weeks ago, but it wasn't cut short enough and was getting moppy again! I gave Nick permission to buzz it last night. Maybe he can go more than 3 weeks between a haircut this time!

Product Spotlight: essie good to go

I'm going to be honest with you...

I have a nail polish obsession.

I'm not even going to tell you how many are in there... it's over 50.

It's completely out of control and I'm thinking of even giving myself an intervention.

Anyways, I have found yet another MUST HAVE!

essie good to go

Here's how it works:

Base coat. Dry. First coat color. Dry. Second coat color. Apply good to go.

Yes, you read that right. You add this top coat while the second color coat is WET.

Say what?!

Now, it would normally take over an hour for your second color coat to dry completely and at least another hour for your top coat to completely dry. I wouldn't say this was instant by any means, but my nails were completely dry and the polish was hard as a rock within 30 minutes. I'm impressed and think that you will be too! However, the freak that I am, I would recommend adding another layer of regular top coat as time allows. But I do that anyways...

The first time I tried this was with my essie splash of grenadine.

Oh, How Pinteresting!

We've made it to Wednesday once again and it's time to share our pins. We've had such nice weather the last few days that I took my computer outside to pin. Beautiful!

My pinspiration this week was for a couple of old windows I got from a friend. I know what I'm doing with one of them and have started my refinishing process (post to come), but I'd really like to use the other one too. And I'd like to do something different with that one.
