Oslo Freedom Forum 2012 [Fórum da Liberdade em Oslo 2012]

I would like to talk about this amazing event that happened last week in Oslo, Norway. The Oslo Freedom Forum 2012 put together social activists, Nobel Prize winners, jornalists, policy makers, among others. Some were born slaves, others were imprisoned and tortured, many are under constant life treat. All want to share their stories, their causes, and ask for a world with freedom of expression, where they can be free from slavery (there are more slaves today than any other time in history, something around 27 million), free from torture (committed by many countries), where people have freedom of association, of a fair trial, among other freedoms (according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights).

I'm sharing the Forum's opening video, that starts in 5min and 50 sec, where Thor Halvorssen [the organizer] talk a bit about the Forum, then James Fallon explains how does a dictator's mind work, Zoha Phan shares the difficulties faces by Burma, Barbara Demick talks about censorship and the total absence of Human Rights in North Korea, and at last Zhanna Litvina exposes the current situation in Belarus. Todos querem compartilhar suas estórias, suas causas e pedir por um mundo onde as pessoas tenham liberdade de expressão, onde elas sejam livres da escravidão (existem mais escravos hoje do que em qualquer outro período da história da humanidade), da tortura (cometida por diversos países), onde possuem a liberdade de associação, de serem julgados de forma justa, entre outras exigências (que estão previstas na Declaração Universal dos Direitos Humanos).

Death Sentences have been handed down in the world for acts such as fraud, sorcery, apostasy, drug-related offences or sexual relations between consenting adults, homossexuality... which fall far short of the legal threshold of ‘most serious’ crimes. China carries out far more executions than all of the rest of the world combined, and is notable as the only country in the world that regularly executes thousands of people every year. In 2010, China legally killed 2000 people, but the much bigger number cannot be confirmed due to executions that often go unreported and are carried out in secret. Iran is second in the number of executions it carries out - regularly killing hundreds every year (many in public). In 2010, Iran legally killed 252 people, being one under age when the crime was commited. Currently the death penalty can be given for HOMOSSEXUALITY, among many others. In 2010, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Uganda and the United States all proposed legislation to expand the scope of its use. Meanwhile, Gambia, Guatemala, Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago threatened to resume executions.

Todas as pessoas brasileiras maiores de 21 anos tem o direito à adoção, independente de seu estado civil (art. 42, ECA). Cabe destacar que a diferença de idade entre o adotante e o adotado há de ser, pelo menos, de dezesseis anos. Hipótese onde os relatórios social o psicológico comprovam condições morais e materiais de um requerente solteiro para assumir esta responsabilidade é cada vez maior e bem aceita, pelo menos no meio jurídico. Nesse processo é necessário confimar a disposição e viabilidade de um adotante de criar e educar uma criança sozinho.

Convencer o mundo de que você quer ser responsável por outro ser não é tarefa fácil. Tomar a decisão de se comprometer com uma criatura indefesa para o resto de sua vida também não soa menos difícil. É ter determinação e ousadia. Transpor barreiras, preconceitos e ir de encontro àquilo que acredita ser capaz, é a maior demonstração de aptidão de um candidato a paternidade voluntária.

Quando decidi ter você nos meus braços e na minha vida, tive que enfrentar uma resistência do mundo que dizia que não valia a pena tanto esforço para realização de um capricho pessoal. Não entendiam que dentro de mim não existia nenhum capricho e já gestava essa vontade de amar você há anos e só esperava aquele momento exato que sabia que existiria e que você viria aos meus braços.

O Cadastro Nacional de Adoção, vigente desde 2008, unificou todo o processo a nível nacional, permitindo o intercruzamento de dados de adotantes e adotados, agilizando o processo de triagem de perfis. Nesse cadastro perfis de qualquer tipo ficam em igualdade de preferência no processo e disponíveis para consulta em qualquer comarca. Quando uma criança é disponibilizada para um processo legal de adoção, potenciais adotantes são imediatamente contactados e questionados sobre seu interesse.

Nunca digo que te escolhi mas sim você a mim. Não pude resistir aquela mirada suplicante de amor atrás do vidro, aquela carga de confiança em mim depositada por seus olhos dizendo “se eu te sorrio você sorrirá para o resto das nossas vidas”. Não tinha tudo preparado para a sua chegada e nem imaginava que nos encontraríamos tão rápido. Felizmente aquela resistência do mundo se transformou em uma grande corrente de apoio e construimos todos o sonho de estar juntos. Estar contigo surpreendentemente se transformou em um projeto coletivo que eu muitas vezes dispensava para estarmos a sós, escutando as batidas dos nossos corações e nos vendo transparentes através de nossas pupilas.

Casos de adoção de solteiros sempre foram permitidos pela nova legislação, mas sempre encontravam empecílios na sociedade e nas empresas. Homens e mulheres foram aos poucos quebrando essas barrerias morais e jurídicas para terem os mesmo direitos e benefícios de pais biológicos, e abrindo precendentes para que mais pessoas com esse perfil pudessem passar por esse processo de uma maneira menos penosa. A licença-adotante,antes somente concedidas a pais biológicos, foi uma dentre as brechas encontradas para que pais solteiros pudessem finalmente ter igualdade de tratamento e garantias trabalhistas equivalentes.

A cada noite em claro,a cada fralda trocada, a cada choro repentino de fome ou medo ou ansias, estava a teu lado e nunca mais te sentirias abandonado meu filho. Nos abraçávamos e sentíamos seguros. Tínhamos o mundo diante de nós e precisávamos ser valentes para enfrentá-lo de peito aberto e orgulho de sermos uma família diferente.

No país, segundo estimativa do Conselho Nacional de Justiça (CNJ), os homens solteiros representam cerca de 1% do total de interessados na adoção. O restante são majoritariamente casais e mulheres solteiras. Essa pequena porção de futuras famílias monoparentais liderada por homens de todas as idades dispostos a criar um lar de amor e afeto ainda tem pouca representatividade e aceitabilidade, mas muito a ensinar à sociedade sobre seus antigos modelos, regras, conceitos e costumes de paternidade.

Não é fácil para um desfazer de toda sua liberdade e centrar todas as suas atenções nesse pequeno ser que agora carrega o seu nome. Não foi fácil dividi-lo com meu trabalho e minhas imensas responsabilidades. Nada convencia mais meus esforços do que cuidar de ti e me ver feliz o fazendo.

Aprender a ter disciplina com outro, comprometer-se com horários, tarefas, dias e noites, amor, responsabilidades. Estar alí para tudo e sempre, doar de si sempre e em tudo. Compreender que se firmou um contrato fácil de ser cumprido, de longo prazo e sem cláusulas penosas.

Hoje, sei que quando nos olhamos nos olhos somos cúmplices e aí não cabe nenhuma palavra. Sei que tenho a ti e tens a mim nesse mundo e esse pacto funciona. Entre nós não cabe mentira e só a verdade nos uniu. Sou teu pai, sou teu amigo e juntos nossa família funciona. Somos únicos e necessitamos de nossos comandos diferentes, agarrando nessas variáveis imprescindíveis dessa relação de amor que sentimos. Aprendi a ser pai contigo e sinto que cada dia mais podes sentir que és meu filho.

Rainbow Town [Cidade Arco-Íris]

Filmed in the upcountry of Liberia, Rainbow Town welcomes you into their lives, revealing how they survived one of Africa’s bloodiest civil wars and how they cope as a family in its aftermath. Narrated by Ma Feeta, three of the children – Alice, Taylor, and Faith – and Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf; the story unearths the price of war, while illustrating the strength of the human spirit.

In Libia, Colonel Qaddafi's armed forces are using machine guns and fighter jets against pro-democracy protesters -- hundreds have already been killed and, without immediate international action, the situation could spiral into a national bloodbath.

The United Nations Security Council and the European Union are in emergency sessions on Libya this week. If we can pressure them to agree to a no-fly zone over Libya, a freeze of Qaddafi's, his family's and his high command's assets, targeted sanctions against the regime, and international prosecution of any military officials involved in the crackdown -- this could stop airforce bombings and split Qaddafi's command structure.

Together, we've sent 450,000 emails to the UN Security Council, "overwhelming" the Council President and and helping to win targeted sanctions and a justice process for the Libyan people. Now, to stop the bloodshed, we need a massive outcry for a no-fly zone.

As Qaddafi's jets drop bombs on the Libyan people, the UN Security Council will decide in 48 hours whether to impose a no-fly zone to keep the government's warplanes on the ground. If he can't dominate the air, he loses a key weapon in a war in which civilians are paying the heaviest price. But as long as his helicopter gunships and bombers are in the air, the death toll will rise. Selling of Innocents [A Venda de Inocentes] by Ruchira Gupta

This HBO documentary (in 5 parts) exposes the trafficking in women and girls that occurs from Nepal to India. The video includes interviews with child prostitutes, a procurer and people who have sold relatives to be sex slaves. It tells the story of the people involved in the booming sex industry of the poor areas in Asia.

I found that there was a system to procure girls and carry them in trucks to the Indo-Nepal border and then in trains to brothels in Mumbai’s Kamatipura. I saw procurers on the prowl, parents selling their daughters, money changing hands and tin-roofs and radios in Nepali homes with daughters in Mumbai." Ruchira knew she had a story and rang up her friends to help find someone who would be interested in it.

Once the 40-day shooting schedule was over, Ruchira realized that she 'couldn't walk away'. To begin with she admitted the girl she bought in Katmandu, into a school. She then took her documentary to different forum to raise awareness on this global crime against women and girls. The 47-minute film was made for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and she won an Emmy for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in 1997 for it.

Apne Aap mobilizes and mentors community based groups of trafficked and vulnerable girls and women to empower each other. The Centres provide the safe space and opportunities for legal, education and livelihood training to the groups of girls and women to develop the skills and abilities to resist traffickers. This strategy has a) empowered mothers to rescue their daughters and put them into schools breaking the cycle of caste-based intergenerational prostitution and b) empowered women to rescue each other by demanding access to the right to livelihoods other than prostitution, education and safe housing in their small group structures.

It brings out its own newspaper, Red Light Despatch, which is written by women and girls in prostitution for their sisters who are survivors and victims’. Filmed over nearly three years, the WASTE LAND documentary follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT, COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) has great access to the entire process and, in the end, offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

This project shows how can one simple idea help the to change the world.

Three years ago, Rachel O'Neill started a project, "Little Dresses for Africa," in a church basement with five friends. Their initial plan was to sew 1,000 dresses using fabric from pillowcases and send them to needy girls. To date they've received and distributed more than 100,000 dresses, many of them much more intricately designed than the original pillowcase patterns they started with. And the dresses keep coming. End the "Corrective Rapes" [Acabe com os "Estupros Corretivos"]

Millicent Gaika was bound, strangled, tortured and raped for five hours by a man who crowed that he was ‘curing’ her of her lesbianism. She barely survived, but she is not alone -- this vicious crime is recurrent in South Africa, where lesbians live in terror of attack. But no one has ever been convicted of 'corrective rape'.

Amazingly, from a tiny Cape Town safehouse a few brave activists are risking their lives to ensure that Millicent’s case sparks change. Their appeal to the Minister of Justice has exploded to over 140,000 signatures, forcing him to respond on national television. But the Minister has not yet answered their demands for action.

Let's shine a light on this horror from all corners of the world -- if enough of us join in to amplify and escalate this campaign, we can reach President Zuma, who is ultimately responsible to uphold constitutional rights. Let’s call on Zuma and the Minister of Justice to publicly condemn ‘corrective rape’, criminalise hate crimes, and ensure immediate enforcement, public education and protection for survivors. A little bit of History

South Africa, often called the Rainbow Nation, is revered globally for its post-apartheid efforts to protect against discrimination. It was the first country to constitutionally protect citizens from discrimination based on sexuality. But in Cape Town alone, the local organization Luleki Sizwe has recorded more than one 'corrective rape' per day, and impunity reigns.

'Corrective rape' is based on the outrageous and utterly false notion that a lesbian woman can be raped to 'make her straight', but this heinous act is not even classified as a hate crime in South Africa. The victims are often black, poor, lesbian women, and profoundly marginalised. But even the 2008 gang rape and murder of Eudy Simelane, the national hero and former star of the South Africa women's national football team, did not turn the tide. And just last week Minister Radebe insisted that motive is irrelevant in crimes like 'corrective rape.'

South Africa is the rape capital of the world. A South African girl born today is more likely to be raped than she is to learn to read. Astoundingly, one quarter of South African girls are raped before turning 16. This has many roots: masculine entitlement (62 per cent of boys over 11 believe that forcing someone to have sex is not an act of violence), poverty, crammed settlements, unemployed and disenfranchised men, community acceptance -- and, for the few cases that are courageously reported to authorities, a dismal police response and lax sentencing.

This is ultimately a battle with poverty, patriarchy, and homophobia. Ending the tide of rape will require bold leadership and concerted action to spearhead transformative change in South Africa and across the continent. President Zuma is a a Zulu traditionalist, who has himself stood trial for rape. But he condemned the arrest of a gay couple in Malawi last year, and, after massive national and international civic pressure, South Africa finally approved a UN resolution opposing extra-judicial killing in relation to sexual orientation.

A case like Millicent’s makes it easy to lose hope. But when citizens come together with one voice, we can succeed in shifting fundamentally unjust, but deeply ingrained practices and norms. Last year, in Uganda, we succeeded in building such a massive wave of public pressure that the government was forced to shelve legislation that would have sentenced gay Ugandans to death. And it was global pressure in support of bold national activists that pushed South African leaders to address the AIDS crisis that was engulfing their country. A África do Sul, chamada de Nação Arco-Íris, é reverenciada globalmente pelos seus esforços pós-apartheid contra a discriminação. Mechanical engineer Amy Smith's approach to problem-solving in developing nations is refreshingly common-sense: Invent cheap, low-tech devices that use local resources, so communities can reproduce her efforts and ultimately help themselves. Smith, working with her students at MIT's D-Lab, has come up with several useful tools, including an incubator that stays warm without electricity, a simple grain mill, and a tool that converts farm waste into cleaner-burning charcoal.

The inventions have earned Smith three prestigious prizes: the B.F. Goodrich Collegiate Inventors Award, the MIT-Lemelson Prize, and a MacArthur "genius" grant. Her course, "Design for Developing Countries," is a pioneer in bringing humanitarian design into the curriculum of major institutions. Going forward, the former Peace Corps volunteer strives to do much more, bringing her inventiveness and boundless energy to bear on some of the world's most persistent problems. [Source: TED]

Invisible Children [Crianças Invisíveis]

This is a documentary about Uganda, made by Jason Russel, Laren Poole & Bobby Bailey. In 2003, they were young filmmakers that traveled to Africa to find a story. What they found was beyond that: a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims.

After returning to the States, they created the documentary "Invisible Children: Rough Cut", a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda's night commuters and child soldiers. They also started a Foundation to help people from Uganda, called Invisible Children.

History of the War

The war in northern Uganda has been called the most neglected humanitarian emergency in the world today. For the past 23 years, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Government of Uganda (GoU) have been waging a war that has left nearly two million innocent civilians caught in the middle. The GoU's attempt to protect its citizens from this rebel militia has largely failed, resulting in an entire generation of youth that has never known peace.

The LRA rebel movement can be traced back to a woman named Alice Lakwena. In the 1980s, Lakwena believed the Holy Spirit spoke to her and ordered her to overthrow the Ugandan government for being unjust to the Acholi. Lakwena and her followers, known as the Holy Spirit Movement, gained momentum as resentment toward the government increased. When Lakwena was exiled and no clear leader of the movement was left, Joseph Kony, who claimed to be Lakwena’s cousin, took control and transformed Lakwena’s rebel army into the LRA.

Kony's LRA did not receive the same support as the Holy Spirit Movement from the Acholi people. With dwindling approval for their cause and heightened government offensives, the rebels resorted to abducting children and indoctrinating them into their ranks. It is estimated that more than 90% of the LRA’s troops were abducted as children. [Source: Invisible Children]

In India, all women must confront the cultural pressure to bear a son. The consequences of this preference is a disregard for the lives of women and girls. From birth until death they face a constant threat of violence.

The numbers are staggering. Since 1980, an estimated 40 million women are 'missing,' by way of abortion, neglect or murder. 7,000 female fetuses are aborted every day according to the U.N., aborted solely because they're girls. One dowry death is reported every 77 minutes. Countless others are never known. The documentary "Undesired" tells their story.

Today, eighty percent of Indian states are now facing a shortage of women. To compensate for this differential, young, unknowing women are bought from surrounding countries like Bangladesh and sold to young bachelors. Not knowing a word of the language, these trafficked women now face the same kind of violence as other Indian women. The Alexia Foundation gave the grant to make this documentary possible. The Apne Aap Foundation was created in 2002 by Ruchira Gupta. It supports women and children by asserting their rights to dignified lives and livelihoods, by advocating their cause to trigger internal policy and institutional changes. It’s main objective also is to fight the organized sex traffic that emerges from India’s problems.

A beautiful work of Jonathan Torgovnik, about the Rwandan genocide in 1994, were more than 1 million tutsi people were slaughtered in one week. Many of the Tutsi women were spared, only to be held captive and repeatedly raped. Many became pregnant and more than 20,000 were born of rapes. The International Community did NOTHING.
