OCCUPYING DELAWARE: Baby it's cold outside.

Frustration is running high and strength low this week. We've thrown ourselves into winterizing the occupation. It's a good plan; using cast-off pallets and thinning a bamboo forest for materials. But it takes man-power and careful planning between the Tues/Wed rainstorms that seem to happen each week. Slowly but surely, the tents are above ground on a double layer of pallets and protected by an tarp covered bamboo A-frame. Those of us who spend multiple days at a time there are individually finding ways to insulate our tents to maximize body heat and minimize wind. So far, it seems to be working.

Resources are dwindling. Because the "story" now is our preparations, and not our actions, we've left the media focus...which is fine, for now...but what it means is that donations have slowed to a trickle. The city refuses to turn on the electricity in the plaza (we'd pay a reasonable fee, I'm sure) and we are forbidden to use anything with an open flame. There is no way to heat food until we get access to a nearby church. At the beginning, we were fortunate to get some donated coffee and hot water. We still do, but a good deal of the time, when it's needed, one of the Occupiers will run out and buy it.

The blankets are nearly gone, between Occupiers and the homeless that come through. We also give them a canned good and some of those ramen noodles if they are hungry, because we can't heat them up anyway.

It sounds grim, but there are successes. Locally, we've seen our governor consider saying no to fracking. We've spoken to or been visited by church groups, youth groups, and organizations who are receptive and supportive of our mission. Nationally; we see a lot of hiccups going into election season. Both parties are stumbling around trying to figure out how to answer to the jobs crisis, the economic decline, the social issues that are rising up because of the thousands of dedicated Occupiers out there, saying NO, we're mad as hell and not going to take it any more!

WE HAVE A VOICE.

It's been silent so long no one remembers quite how to use it, but by next spring, I imagine folks across this nation will have their voices back, loud and clear.

It's been two months since from Occupy Delaware's humble beginning and one month of full-on Occupation. We're struggling, but strong. We stumble, but we rise up.

We're the 99%.

Today is Thanksgiving. In spite of not having a job for nearly a year, there is much to be grateful for. I am still blessed in so many ways, by my old and new friendships and family who all support me...even if they don't understand this journey I am on.

I have been involved with Occupy Delaware since Day One, in late September...and Occupying for nearly a month. It's been a difficult beginning, starting as we did when cold weather started to set in. We've had near freezing nights, and drenching downpours. We've lived without electricity and restroom facilities. We've had to rebuild the site when it's been flooded. This has been no holiday. Are numbers are small because of the time of year, and complacency in this corporate and banking state. But we've learned a lot. We've learned we are survivors. We've learned how to creatively solve problems. We've learned we're tenacious. I'm surrounded by passionate folks who come from all walks of life. Folks who all came for their own personal reasons. And we are coming to know each other like family. I can't imagine that when this is over, we won't remain that way.

Leading to this Thanksgiving, it's eve was a magnificent day. I'd like to share it with you...a day in the life of an Occupier.

I spent the previous night in my own home, having had some family matters to take care of. It was still raining when I woke up and it was hard, very hard, to get the wheels in motion to go back to Spencer Plaza. Leaving my warm, dry house, after hearing from the encampment that there had been some serious flooding. But, I had security duty to fulfill and so after 3 cups of fresh, hot coffee, I set out....loaded up the car with the soaking wet blankets I had brought home to wash and dry.

As I drove, I noticed so many houses for sale and local businesses shuttered. We move through our lives with blinders on, not seeing the truth that is sadly our new reality. Once you've occupied, you talk to so many, many people in dire straits who are quietly grateful that someone is speaking up for them it becomes impossible to ignore all the damage.

There was a message that a turkey needed to be picked up and delivered to Hanover Presbyterian Church, who had graciously offered their facilities to us to serve our "Friendsgiving Dinner" this coming Saturday. Driving north, I made contact, picked it up and delivered it to the church, where I met Pastor Andy. He had written a wonderful letter to the editor of the News Journal on our behalf. We had a nice conversation while he showed me the kitchen and dining room we'd be using. He seemed as happy to offer his church as we were to have it made available to us. Without electricity, it would have been a nightmare to try and pull off.

On the way to the church, I drove through a "sketchy" part of the city, and while sitting at a red light, I notice a woman standing outside of a liquor store. A patron walked out of the store, and she said something to him. He gave her a beer. It made me sad.

I returned to Spencer Plaza. Within 10 minutes, this same woman came into the food/meeting tent and asked if we had any food. I gave her a can of ravioli. And cookies. I was still saddened by her, but felt that I had at least provided her with some sustenance. It's the little things that make all the difference these days.

The camp was in better shape than I expected. A crew had been working diligently to remove water and pull in pallets to get things off the ground. I checked my tent. It had weathered the rain well, nothing was wet inside. I made sure my tarp was secure in case the winds picked up and did my security shift.

A friend of Occupy dropped of a well known Delawarean treat. 10 feet of subs from Cappriotis!!! Bobby's (Thanksgiving on a roll, for those not familiar). You'd think none of us had eaten in days...we dove into them like vultures.

One of the men of the camp, homeless for 4 years, living in his car with only his beloved dog for company...lost the dog. I could feel his heart breaking. His dog is his way of connecting with something living and breathing. We all went on a search. Buddy was found, safe, and we all shared in a true moment of Thanksgiving for him and his companion in life.

My shift now over, I left for our Green Friday action at the local mall. A group of about 10 of us wore t-shirts with slogans and event info hand painted on them. We split up and quietly roamed the mall as browsers. Many of us were stopped and asked what it was about. It was amazing to me to see the mall at the holidays in a whole new light. I don't know how to describe it. Gluttony? Who needs all this stuff? We're encouraging people not to go into debt this season, by using cash and shopping locally, buying goods made in the USA to keep jobs here, hand making gifts. Our event (this Friday at Rodney Square from 10 to 2) is a "totally free market". Yes, that is correct. Free. We have goods that we, and others, are donating. We are giving it away, so that others who can't afford the holidays, can maybe find something they can give to their loved ones.

Then we decided to do a People's Mic in the food court. I led it. It was empowering! It was fun! It was a positive message inviting people to our Green Friday. I had a blast. And the best part? One of the men, as we were leaving, heard two little kids yelling "MIC CHECK" back and forth to each other!

What a magnificent day. The power of love and compassion can seriously change the world. We are occupying. Expect us.

RECOMMENDED: Studio Art Classes at the Delaware Art Museum

It's Fall registration time at the Delaware Art Museum for it's Studio Art Classes. I know, I know...you are thinking...but it's THE ART MUSEUM...only ACCOMPLISHED ARTISTS attend these classes, I'm not good enough!

BUNK! Not only are classes designed for all levels, but in comparison to other classes I've checked into, they are not even more expensive. When I found myself "retired" I decided it was as good a time as any to take some of the finer art classes I'd dreamed about but never had the time to do. Right now, I've finished Beginning and Beyond Beginning Metalsmithing, plus a summer workshop called "Maggi Metal". It's a great feeling to be learning again, and using my hands in a really creative way. The classes have been fun, and given me direction and purpose. I've just signed up for the Torch-fired enameling class (I LOVE to use the torch!!) and can barely wait for the class to begin.

I recommend that you actually join the Delaware Art Museum, not only because it's a good thing to do, but especially if you think you might continue with more classes, you will realize savings within a couple of workshops or courses. Plus, there is early bird registration (by September 5th) which will save you another twenty bucks.

Don't be shy! Explore your inner artist in a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Make Art, Make Friends, Make some Laughs!

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN: Delaware City celebrates its Day!

The day will soon be here! We in Delaware City open our streets to show our own uniqueness in what is becoming a rarity…the American Small Town. I think we are somewhat blessed to be surrounded as we are with rivers and wetlands. It keeps the development at bay and forces us to concentrate on what we already have within our borders. And concentrate we are. In the 22 years since I have chosen to call this place home, our community is taking a turn for the better. There is a genuine feeling of community here, and the business center is becoming more and more robust.

So welcome, and come down for a visit. There will be much to do over the weekend, beginning with a hoe down to support Main Street on Friday night (July 15, in the lot behind Crabby Dicks), a parade Saturday morning (the 16th, for those keeping track); crafts, rides, food and music in the park all day and topped off with what I consider to be the best fireworks the state offers.

WATCHING THINGS GROW: What this grown-up has been doing lately

With all of the initial rain and subsequent heatwaves, it seems I have the jungle garden in June that I don't usually see until August. By then, I've had enough and am good and ready for sweatah weathah, and nights that are "nice for sleeping" because as anyone in Delaware knows...IT'S NOT THE HEAT, IT'S THE HUMIDITY.

Given my change in circumstances, I'm spending a lot of "quality time" at home and hence, watching things grow.

Also, I wanted to save some money on veges and decided to make a real attempt at a salad garden. Well, I had (had) a great assortment of lettuce, but try as I might, it's near done and my tomatoes and peppers have yet to ripen.

I feel like a farmer, watching the skies and testing the air to how it affects all of the plants. I could tell right away it wasn't going to be a great year for my hydrangeas. One bush isn't blooming, and the others are blooming small. I checked around town, most other bushes are in the same boat. Except those dark, dark purple ones, they seem to be doing great.

So here I sit, checking the plants, seeing how they fare. I even went so far as to promise I would make a go of "fancy" types. I have some heirloom green grape tomatoes, black krims and lilac peppers. I also have an overgrown wineberry bush, planted a couple of years ago by some thoughtful bird in a natural bird manner. I've yet to eat more than a couple because they eat them before they are completely ripe. But, they planted them, they can eat them, I suppose.

The lavender and roses have bloomed and been trimmed and hopefully, since it was so early in the season for them, will see a rebloom. The lilies come and go, and the black-eyed susans show their faces, the hydrangeas wilt in the heat like southern belles. The veges edge closer to ripening and the herbs to harvest.

Watching the garden grow, that's how this grown-up intends to spend a good part of this summer.

And saving a boatload of cash at the same time.

Since I've entered the realm of the financially reduced (otherwise known as downsized), I've been all about trying to find ways to save a little cash. While it's nice that my gainfully employed son occasionally picks up the tab, finding ways to knock back expenditures has become a mission.

Enter the local saving clubs, like Living Social and Groupon. These sites, while not offering a lot in the way of saving on necessities, do help when it comes to those little extras. I want to offer this example of a recent experience with Groupon...

I purchased 3 laser hair removal treatments using a Groupon deal from Juventas Aesthetic located at 325 E. Main Street in Newark. They offer a number of aesthetic treatments, from laser to botox and other fillers as well. My deal was for 3 treatments for $99. Yes, 99 bucks. I had a friend who did this when the process was first offered at a cost of, are you ready? $900. That kind of price take kept me plucking and waxing for years. When I saw this deal offered, I couldn't pass it up.

The office was a little hard to find at first (it's in the First Aid ER building next to the Co-op) on the second floor (Suite 204). The staff is friendly and efficient. I never had to wait long in the waiting room. The doctor does real medical procedures as well, so if you are expecting a spa-like experience, this isn't it. Laser treatments are actually produced by the staff, (The doctor does any sort of injection treatments though) who does a thorough job of explaining the procedure. (A side note; if you are considering this, the laser does NOT kill white or blonde hair, just darker hair.) It's quick and simple (about 5-10 minutes) but a warning...it does hurt. Not a lot, I'd classify it as moderately uncomfortable. I had my upper lip done, (the bane of my existence since I'm like, 10) and while it didn't hurt that area, I was surprised that it hurt my TEETH. The good news is that it is instantly temporary. As soon as the "zap" is done, so is the hurt. It did make my eyes water. The side effects can include some temporary redness, itching and possible peeling. I had none of that. None. I'd check the rear-view mirror on my way home and was pleased to see...NOTHING.

No red, no burn or itch, and best of all, no hair. No more plucking, no more waxing. I wish I had had an offer like this years ago, I would have avoided a lot of pain and some permanent skin damage.

I heard a rumor that another offer of some sort will be available in the Fall, so keep your eyes open. I am.

Art On The Town is a long-standing tradition in Wilmington. It's gone through it's ups and downs, but I think there is a real creative surge happening at the moment, with DCAD, the Queen, and an upsurge in local music and theater. It's on for this weekend and I would be remiss in not giving it a plug. STAR STYLE: Elizabeth Taylor

I wanted to share my "brush with greatness" moment with Elizabeth Taylor, one, if not the, most influential, beautiful and stylish women of the 20th Century.

But let me start with a Gramma story. I have many of these stories, because my Gram was one of the most influential women in my life. One summer, I mentioned to her that I wanted a "Bermuda bag" and the next thing I knew, we were on a ship heading out into the wide blue sea to go to the actual island of Bermuda to find me a bag. While on the ship, one of those host type guys, told Gram that I looked just like Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet. Unfortunately, this happened on the first day of the 7-day trip and from then on, Gram introduced me to everyone as her granddaughter, who LOOKED JUST LIKE LIZ TAYLOR. For a thirteen year-old, that got-old, very fast. But in the back of my mind I was thinking...how cool is that, looking like Liz Taylor!

But the brush with her came many, many years later when my little brother was competing at the Scottish Games in Alexandria, VA. It was when Liz was married to John Warner, then running for Governor of VA. The two of them came at the end of the day and helped give out awards. Quite a risky venture for Miss Taylor, after a bunch of bawdy, brawny, burly Scotsmen had been playing/drinking/in the sun all day. One after another would climb the stage and grab her in a bear hug and a lip-lock. She took it all in very good humor and with much graciousness. She wore a bright red dress that day.

I always picture her in bright red.

The Queen of Hollywood? Long live the Queen.

But before I get to that, let's take one short detour...I saw my first 3D movie today! I know I know, laugh all you want, but I admit to geekery when it comes to cultural dancing. Well, dancing in general, really. I saw Michael Flatley's King of the Dance.

Now, just stop laughing right there. As it turns out, I have nothing to compare it to, so I really can't judge, but I do have some observations. I would have liked to have seen Riverdance instead. I liked the dance and music so much more. LotD is kinda, well...Vegas. But, that said, I can see a purpose in this kind of 3D filming. Spending $12 to feel like you are sitting just off stage is a hell of a lot cheaper than whatever live tickets go for these days...$412 per?
And if you can forget you are wearing big oversized glasses, you do *sorta* feel like you are right there...but for one tiny little bit of oddity. And I do mean tiny. I don't know if is just something that happens in 3D videography, or whether it just happened in this film, but the people in the foreground appeared really, really tiny. But it was fun to have things fly out at me and when they dropped confetti at the end, I thought some landed on me. But it won't be in theaters long, so go see it this weekend if you haven't quite gotten over the green yet.

There was a trailer for the next Pirates movie...3D...already on my agenda. Johnny Depp in 3D? Yeah, I'm there.

Mid-afternoon and the Irish (at least for today) eyes are smilin' at Crabby O'Dicks!

Green Beer! Red Hair! Smilin' Eyes!

On my list of go-to's for today because of the advertised specials...$3.17 Irish Coffee, Shepards Pie and Corned Beef and Cabbage. I had a hard time believing I saw the price correctly, but correct it is.

And tasty. We had two helpings of the pie, and added some soda bread to the mix. Not that I would partake...but Irish Carbombs are also on special for $5 for those who enjoy that kind of thing...

Well worth the trip to Delaware City, and the weather is even nice enough for the deck. The place is going to be hopping tonight, the Irish tunes are playing and the deck is freshened up and looks great for the upcoming season.

SAINT PAT'S EVE: Limber Jack Jig Contest!

KB HOPES this becomes an annual event. Penn's Place, on Delaware Street (across from the Court House) in Old New Castle, hosted a charming event this evening in their bistro, Traders Cove. I imagine Esther and Matt Lovlie (proprietors) of Penn's Place had to coerce the locals for this first event, but I think it could very well take wings.

First off, I had one of my favorite "light" foods, a curry chicken salad sandwich with cranberries, served with sweet potato chips, made fresh and reasonably priced (with a mocha latte, under 10 bucks).

The Guinness was flowing, mandolin playing, Irish songs singing, spoons keeping the beat. All-in-all, probably more pub-like than most Americanized Irish bars. And you know, I don't know that it was planned that way...I think it was a spontaneous group of the right people, charming hosts and good timing.

SEARCHING FOR SPRING: It's just around the bend

I saw a glimpse...the first flower...in my yard today. After a winter of snow, cold, rain, snow, snow, rain, cold and grey...GREEN is good.

And better yet, a trip to my favorite "go see something pretty" and "OH, this tastes' good!" spot...WILLEYS farm market just south of Odessa on old Rt. 13. Going to Willeys always makes me feel better about everything. It's my own personal therapy. And I got some Irish potatoes while I was there.

I don't as a rule go out on what I like to call Amateur Nights; you know, those nights people hit the town who don't know how to behave LIKE GROWNUPS, but I might have to make an exception this St. Pat's for this:

Time to get your Irish on...David O'Poland on Irish fiddle and Mark McUnruh on guitar tour the finest Irish pubs in Newark, DE on St. Patrick's Day. It all starts at 5:30 at McGlynn's in Pike Creek, followed by McGlynn's People's Plaza at 7:00, wrapping up at The Deer Park from 8:30 to 9:30. Guinness and bagpipes will abound, not to mention the inevitable troop of pre-teen girls with ringlet-ed hair step dancing in plaid kilts and knee highed socks.

If I lived in N. Wilmo, I'd be a habitual Sunday bruncher here at the Bellefonte Cafe. Not only is it "comfy" and friendly, it serves great food, greater Bloody Marys (and I don't even LIKE Bloody's, except for these) and on Sunday, Betty and the Bullet (and the Boy from Boston) are in residence, along with various musical friends. You never know if it will be an extra fiddle, or Harmonica Pete, or some guy playing a cardboard box for a drum. What you do know is that it will always be excellent and foot-tapping and a fun way to forget that the work-week is just around the corner.

A few selections from the menu; from the top; a mango quesidilla with salsa, the famous BLOODY MARY, grilled panini with prosciutto, a Valostini: tomato basil honey mustard bacon avocado YUMMINESS, black bean soup and a portobello and brie panini. It's ALL good...

NOW, a word to the wise. It gets crowded on Sunday. This is a "sit around and enjoy the day and your company" kinda place. Don't expect fast service. Donna makes the food fresh and as it is ordered, so it takes a while. Go on in, grab a menu, order your Bloody and some coffee. When that comes, ORDER YOUR FOOD IMMEDIATELY.

Then sit back and enjoy the music...your friends...the day.

I couldn't find a website; but you can google it. It's smack in the middle of a very nice eclectic little shopping district...you can spend an entire afternoon here.

Happy International Women’s Day!

What better day than that to announce the official grand opening of MY NEW STUDIO.

Who knew it would take this long? I certainly didn’t

do it in 2 days like those design shows do…and I didn’t have a $1000 budget like they do. I had a $400 budget to cover desk, chair, lighting and storage.

So here is the breakdown:

Chair: $35 (Old Glory, Newport)

Desk: $35 (State of DE surplus sale, Gov. Bacon)

Lamp: $35 (OG, there seems to be a theme going here, but wait…)

Bookcase: $93 (DE Estate Sales, New Castle)

Total: $198!

I hesitate to show the before pics…lets just say it became “that” room…you know the one. The one that is a bigger version of the drawer set aside in the kitchen and labeled the “junk drawer”.

But, here goes:

Ok, now that's over.

The bottom line:Half of what I planned to spend! So, needless to say, I decided on a few more objects…a second comfy reading chair for $15 (UO, on sale but the shipping was another $15!), a taboret @ $46, (on sale as well and cheap shipping) and a rug, $80. After an exhausting online and local search, I walked into my local Target and found exactly what I was looking for. It was the one and only full price item I bought. So, we’ve added another $95 which left me with $51 for let’s just say, accessorizing. Bits and pieces.

The desk and chair were in perfect shape, but I needed to update them to bend to my “design will”. Some sanding, some painting, some reupholstering.

repurposed china hutch.

And then I went shopping in my own house and surprised my own self.

I discovered that I live in gift shop.

Target rug...

That once empty corner, now functional with my sturdy desk and updated paint.

Not really, but I have a lot…A LOT…of STUFF. I turned my brain to “black/grey/yellow” and went on a hunt. My grandmothers (one a businesswoman and one creative) would be very proud and I have included them both in my design.

Voila, it’s done. Now it’s time to get down to the real work.

This is from a proof print I uncovered when I started hauling out stuff from my old office...kept around in a pile of what we old school designer/illustrators used to call a "swipe file". When I saw it, I realized that was the direction I was heading with my room. There is something clean and bright about a birch tree.

Maybe I will actually frame this and hang it.

Maybe I will drink some birch beer.

The days are getting longer, the nights are drawing us out of our Winter dens...

Best Kept Secret?

The Cafe at Saint Georges Country Store

My favorite local (for me, anyway) spot to enjoy really excellent music in an intimate setting. Owned by Joe and Margi Michini, this secret spot..."it's not the end of the world, but you can see it from here"...offers some great delta blues hosted by Gary Cogdell on the last weekend of the month.

Not sure why they call them the "blues" since I always feel like dancing and stompin' my feet to them.
But here at the Cafe, they do them well by any standards.

You never know who will show up for the sessions, but this is where the musicians come to play. Real musicians. The kind who can drop in with other musicians and you'd think they have played together for years.

It's never disappointing. If you see the band having fun, you can't help but have fun yourself.

Besides the fact that the Cafe is practically in my backyard (and who doesn't like that after a glass of merlot?) and I'm always a party girl when it comes to good music, the food keeps me coming back.

If Joe Michini isn't from The Big Easy, I'm sure fooled. Well, I could be, since I've never actually BEEN to NOLA (bucket list!), BUT IF I HAD, I would imagine this is what the food would taste like. Seasonings just right, not too overpowering. Sometimes I find that if a restaurant offers a certain type of cuisine, the thinking is "You want Creole (Mexican/Chinese, etc)? We'll GIVE you Creole (Mexican/Chinese, etc)!" And then all you can taste is an over abundance of a couple of native seasonings. Not here.

Chicken bites with Creole mustard. My D4GU partner-in-crime's favorite dip.

Feta and walnut salad. OMG this was so good. NOT SKIMPY with the feta, feta fans!

Tuna bites with remoulade sauce. Tuna done MY way!

Now, a warning. You'd better start calling now to get reservations. This place is INTIMATE. Sometimes the dinner crowd thins out and you can get a seat after 9PM, but it's risky. I took the risk this last weekend and lost. No one, and I mean no one, was giving up their seats.

Here's where being an old time band chick helps out. And one mighty fine waitress, shout out to Wendi! And to Ron "Roadkill" Smith for waving me over to the "band table" so I could get some food. The plan had been to have full meals, but by the time we sat, it was late and I wanted fast! Next time, I will get that reservation. Lesson learned. Although I do believe I have a standing reservation at that band table from here on out. Right???

Music. Food. Everybody is welcome here vibe. Lots of great food, lots of musical choices and it seems the calendar is becoming more and more diverse every time I look at it.

I've never been disappointed in any food choices. Try the bread pudding. Just try it. It'll make a believer out of you.

Above the Canal: St. Georges Cafe, Sessions with Gary Cogdell & Friends. Friday and Saturday nights. This places will get a full fledged review coming up...one of my favorites! Great music and food! However, if you don't have reservations, you might go a little later when the dinner crowd thins out.

North of Wilmington: At the Bellefonte Cafe on Friday; New Sweden. Saturday brings Adelanted the Woz Trio and on Sunday, the always fun Betty and the Bullet (and the boy from Boston) for brunch.

Wilmington Proper: The Teletones will be at the Blue Parrot in Wilmington Saturday night!

UPDATE! Reedy Point Players One-Act Play Festival

Congrats to Stacy Swed and the cast of Sure Thing for winning best play and best director of the first ever festival of the RP Players!

There were four great performances, including Sure Thing. The other three, Colorblind, Recognition and Playthings also deserve kudos for their hard work. Best actor went to Leroy Jett (in his first performance ever!) and best actress went to Ruth K. Brown.

I have had the pleasure of directing Ms. Brown in Steel Magnolias, and want to send out my congrats to her. Her performance in Colorblind affected me personally, taking me back to the horror that was Hurricane Katrina. I worked phones for the Red Cross during that time. Mostly what the affected folks wanted to do was talk. Ruth made me remember that.

The competition moves on to the next round. I, for one, intend to see how it all pans out when the best all meet on one stage at the Everett in Middletown.
