Sighnari has become a major tourist hot-spot since a couple of years, certainly much due to restauration. Sakashivili likes to present "romantic" Sighnari to foreign guests. Well, as long as you don't look behind the facades, this little kakhetian town on the lovely scopes of the Tsivi mountain-ridge is charming indeed. To the north, you can enjoy a beautiful view over the valley and on High Caucasus.

Well, this is the not-so-lovely view behind some facades. I wonder how long it will take to ruin this nation's architectural heritage, if such "restauration" carries on - in Sighnari, Tbilisi, Gelati and all other historic places. More and more, historic buildings are being replaced by mock-up facades, while behind everything historic had to give way to concrete constructions.

Der Sieg der Opposition in der Parlamentswahl in Georgien ist auch ein Sieg von Präsident Micheil Saakaschwili und seiner Mannschaft. Auch wenn sie an den Urnen eine schwere Niederlage erlitten haben: Der Ausgang der Wahl zeigt, dass ihre Politik Georgien seit der Rosenrevolution von 2003 ein Maß an Demokratie gebracht hat, das – abgesehen von den drei baltischen Staaten, die EU-Mitglieder sind – kein anderes Land im postsowjetischen Raum erreicht hat. Das heißt jedoch nicht, dass die bisherige Regierung wirklich demokratisch war. Ihre vielen Versuche während des Wahlkampfs, die Opposition einzuschüchtern und zu behindern, zeigen, dass Saakaschwili und seine Mannschaft durchaus autoritäre Neigungen hatten.

This call is totally unacceptable and is a direct attack against democracy and the rule of law. It has raised the stakes for Saakashvili. He has promised to leave the presidency next year and needs a UNM victory in the October 1 parliamentary election to keep a hand on Georgia's reins and avoid the risk of political oblivion.

The parliament will have stronger powers after next year's presidential election and Saakashvili could steer an ally into the post of prime minister with enhanced authority or take the job himself, though he is not expected to do that.

Nekressi (georgisch ნეკრესი; nɛkʼrɛsɪ) ist eine historische georgische Stadt und ein georgisch-orthodoxesKloster in der Region Kachetien, Qwarlis Munizipaliteti. Sie liegt in der Nähe des Dorfes Schilda östlich von Telavi. Die Stadt wurde im 2. oder 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. vom iberischem König Parnadschomi gegründet. Im 4. Jahrhundert ließ König Mirdat in Nekressi eine Kirche errichten, in der sich im 6. Jahrhundert einer von dendreizehn syrischen Vätern – Abibos Nekresseli – betätigte. In dieser Zeit wurde auch das Bistum von Nekressi gegründet, das bis ins 19. Jahrhundert existierte. Das Bistum umfasste nicht nur das kachetischen Gebiet, sondern auch einen kleinen Teil von Dagestan, Didoeti.

Bald wurde die Stadt Nekressi ein wichtiger Ort nicht nur im georgischen Iberien sondern in ganz Ostkaukasien. Von diesem strategischen Punkt konnten die iberischen Könige die Gebiete des ostkaukasischen Hochlands leicht regieren, deshalb konnten diese Gebiete kulturell und politisch unter dem starken Einfluss Georgiens geraten. Nekressi war ein Zentrum der Ausbildung. Einige Mönche, die sich im Nekressi-Kloster betätigten, waren gleichzeitig die Hagiografen.

Der Klosterkomplex Nekressi besteht aus mehreren Kirchen und anderen klösterlichen Gebäuden. Das älteste Gebäude des Klosters, die kleine Basilika aus dem 4. Jahrhundert, ist gleichzeitig eine der ältesten noch heute vorhandenen Kirchen in Georgien. Im Kloster gibt es noch eine große Basilika aus dem 7. Jahrhundert, die ein Beispiel für eine sogenannte „Dreikirchenbasilika“, ein eigenständiger georgischer Kirchenbautyp ist. Im 8. Jahrhundert wurde in Nekressi eine neue Kirche mit der Kuppel errichtet. Im Komplex steht auch ein zweistöckiger Palast für den Bischof von Nekressi. Der Palast stammt aus dem 8.-9. Jahrhundert. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde im Kloster ein Turm errichtet.

English Wikipedia: Khertvisi fortress is one of the oldest fortresses in Georgia and was functional throughout the Georgian feudal period. It is situated in Southern Georgia, in Meskheti region. The fortress was first build in the 2nd century BC. The church was built in 985, and the present walls build in 1354. As the legend says, Khertvisi was destroyed by Alexander the Great. In the 10th-11th centuries it was the center of Meskheti region. During the 12th century it became a town. In the 13th century Mongols destroyed it and until the 15th century it lost its power. In the 15th century it was owned by Meskheti landlords from Jakeli family. In the 16th century the southern region of Georgia was invaded by Turks. During next 300 years they have owned Khertvisi too. At the end of the 19th century Georgian and Russian army returned the lost territories and Khertvisi became the military base for Russian and Georgian troops. Khertvisi fortress is situated on the high rocky hill in the narrow canyon at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Paravani Rivers.

In Georgien entsteht der Mythos des Weißen Georg, Tetri Giorgi, bezeugt seit der Mitte des 9. Jahrhunderts. Georgische Ethnologen stellen die Entstehung des Namens in einen Zusammenhang mit einem heidnischen Mondgott, dem mythologischen Krieger Giorgi. Er soll in den Augen der Bevölkerung später mit dem Schutzheiligen Georgiens, dem Heiligen Georg verschmolzen sein. More than 90% of the inhabitants of Javakheti (Georgian name) or Djavakhq (Armenian name) are ethnic Armenians. Other than in the capital of Georgia with its large and well integrated minority population of Armenians, it remains to be an interesting question to what extent the State of Georgia will be able to integrate Javakhetian Armenians into Georgian society. The older people often speak no Georgian at all while the young generation learns Georgian as a second language in school.

My short impression is that nowadays economy has become more important to Javakhetians than autonomy. Lukily both governments share the same interest in peaceful solutions and have therefore acted responsibly.

Javakheti consists of hilly highlands (1000m above sealevel and more). It is the coldest region of Georgia. Winters are very cold, summer's sun is very hot. If the sun hides behind clouds, even in high summers it quickly becomes cold.

Agriculture focuses on livestock breeding and potatoes mainly. With all the flowers (see below) it's no wonder bees give delicious honey. Many fruits like melons and peaches come from other Georgian regions to the markets of Javakheti.

The soil is either black or red or stony. Lush hills alternate with canyons.

Thanks to my friend Gotcha I was able to visit the region of Javakheti in early July. So by and by I will post some of my better pictures here. I'll go to bed soon so here's for everyone who wants to fall asleep counting sheep:
