Swiss Government scholarships

Types of scholarship:University scholarships: University scholarships are open to students from all countries mentioned in the list, but are intended exclusively for postgraduate studies at one of Switzerland’s 10 universities or 2 federal institutes of technology.
Eligibility
- Candidates must hold a university degree (Bachelors/Masters) on commencement of the scholarship.
- Candidates must be able to demonstrate their academic abilities and what they aim to achieve.
- Candidates must contact the institution and/or the professor supervising their period of research. Universities may request supplementary information and/or set certain additional conditions to determine whether or not you qualify for admission.
- Candidates must be under the age of 35 (born on or after 1.1.1977).
- Candidates must be suitably proficient in the language of instruction (French, German, Italian or English). A language test is required.
- Candidates who have already embarked on the first year of a Masters programme at a Swiss university or UAS are no longer eligible for a Swiss government scholarship (with the exception of arts scholarship holders who do not have to be in Switzerland for more than one year). Such applications will not be considered by Swiss diplomatic representations.
- Swiss government scholarships may not be combined with other scholarships or awards.
Length and amountScholarships are provided for a nine-month academic year. Scholarships for postgraduate or Masters programs lasting up to 2 years (3 or 4 semesters) may be extended depending on results from the first year.Scholarships consist of monthly payments of:

CHF 1920.- for postgraduate students

CHF 1920.- for fine arts and music students

The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students does not cover the cost of academic and/or term fees. Generally-speaking, the universities and the Zurich Federal Institute of Technology exempt holders of Swiss government scholarships from term fees (~CHF 600 per term), but not necessarily from Masters programme enrolment fees. In the event that these fees are not waived, it is up to the scholarship holder to arrange payment.
AwardsTechnically, the scholarships are offered to the government of the student’s country of origin and not to the student. Applications are subject to preliminary selection by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The Swiss diplomatic representation then passes on the short-listed applications to the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) which subsequently takes the final decision. The FCS is composed of academic staff drawn from Swiss universities. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of academic and scientific excellence. The results will be communicated at the end of April 2012 / Mai 2012.

Undergraduate scholarships - Kingston University London

We offer up to ten scholarships for undergraduate students for September entry.

The scholarships are open to prospective full-time undergraduate students in any subject area for each year of a three-year course (subject to satisfactory progress). Foundation degree students (first year entry only) are also eligible for the scholarships.

The deadline for September 2012 scholarship applications is 31 May 2012.

Who can apply?

You can apply for an award if you:
are an international student (classified as 'overseas' for fee purposes);
have an offer of a place on an undergraduate degree course or foundation degree course at Kingston for 2012 entry (first year entry only); and
are not currently registered on an undergraduate course at Kingston University.

How are the scholarships awarded?

Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

academic merit;
what you expect to gain from the course you are taking; and
what you intend to do after completing the course.

How do I apply?

The deadline for September 2012 scholarship applications is 31 May 2012.

Please note that we cannot consider applications received after the deadline. Remember that the scholarships application procedure is separate from the admissions application procedure.

Before you begin your application, please make sure that you meet the eligibility criteria. You must:

be an international student (classified as 'overseas' for fee purposes);
have an offer of a place on a course at Kingston for 2012 entry; and
not currently be registered on an undergraduate or postgraduate course at Kingston University.

Japan Indonesia Scholarship (JIPS)

The Japan Indonesia Presidential Scholarship Program

Funded by a grant from the Government of Japan, the Japan Indonesia Presidential Scholarship Program (JIPS) supports PhD studies in an academic field of study covered by ten Indonesian Centers of Excellence (CoE) participating in the program. Each of these newly established Centers of Excellence is located at a leading higher education institution in the country with a demonstrated track record in the pursuit of excellence. The goal of the program is to promote excellence in research in these Centers to support the Ministry of National Education in its mission to improve the quality of higher education and research in the country.

Who can apply?
Applicants must meet the following general criteria to be eligible for a scholarship:

Be a national and resident of Indonesia
Be under 45 years at application deadline
Must have completed and been awarded a master's degree, or equivalent, at the time of application however, outstanding candidates with a bachelor degree can be considered for a Master-PhD track
Have maintained a GPA of at least 3 on a scale of 4 in both undergraduate and graduate studies

Full-time lecturer and/or researcher in a Center of Excellence (CoE) or equivalent institution in Indonesia are encouraged to apply.

What is the Program’s purpose?

The purpose of the Program is to support scholarship recipients in upgrading their qualifications and to provide them with an international study experience at leading academic institutions in World Bank member countries, except Indonesia. During their studies, scholars are encouraged to build and foster academic collaborations and partnerships. On return to Indonesia, scholars are expected to take an active role in the academic life of the sponsoring CoE.
Host Institution
Candidates should seek admission at a university of their choice in World Bank member countries.
What does the scholarship cover?

The scholarship covers full tuition for a period of three to four years, and the cost of basic medical and accident insurance usually obtained through the university.
A monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books.
Economy class air travel between the home country and the host university at the start of the study program and one return journey following the end of the overall scholarship period. In addition to the ticket, scholars receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip.

The benefits only apply to the scholarship recipient.
The JIPS scholarship does not cover:

expenses for the scholar's family
educational equipment such as computers

What are the fields of study supported by JIPS?
The proposed program of study and research proposal should reflect the sponsoring CoE: Biotechnology, Bioenergy, Infrastructure and Urban Development, Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Bioindustry and Business, Good Corporate Governance, Distance Learning, Special Needs Education, Reproductive Health, Economic Policy.
How are awardees selected?
Eligible candidates are evaluated by the sponsoring Center of Excellence (CoE) which screens the applications according to their selection procedures for graduate scholarships. Final awards are made by a Steering Committee, based on the following:

academic records
professional and academic experience; and
relevance of proposed program of study to the corresponding CoE.

Selected candidates will be informed by the relevant CoE.
Scholar’s Commitment
The scholarship recipient will be requested to sign a formal commitment to return and work in his/her sponsoring CoE for a minimum of a two-year period for each year of scholarship received. Each CoE commits to recruit its sponsored scholars upon completion of their PhD studies .
Scholars are expected to mention the JIPS scholarship in any publication related to their doctoral research work, including their thesis, and to provide the Program with a copy of their thesis upon graduation

Background

The New Zealand-ASEAN Scholars Awards seek to make a substantial contribution to ASEAN’s development by providing opportunities for postgraduate study (i.e. Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s degree and doctorate/PhD) in New Zealand.
The New Zealand-ASEAN Scholars Awards (NZ-AS) are part of the New Zealand’s official development assistance to the ASEAN region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, through the New Zealand Aid Programme, delivers this scholarships scheme.
Under the NZ-AS scheme, up to 170 scholarships are available to candidates from ASEAN countries. From the total of 170, up to 50 scholarships per annum are available for Indonesian applicants.
The scholarships are for full-time study (See the scholarships benefits) at one of nine eligible New Zealand institutions. See the list of eligible New Zealand education institutions

Who can apply?

Individuals who meet the following profile may apply for the NZ-AS scholarships:

From the public or private sector;
With a proposed field of study in support of sustainable economic development ,as the core focus of the New Zealand Aid Programme, especially on agriculture, renewable energy (Geothermal) and disaster risk management;
Strong candidates from all areas will be considered, especially candidates who can demonstrate leadership quality and potential for future leadership;
Preferably be under 40 years of age at the time of application for Masters and under 45 years of age at the time of application for PhD
Those with work experiences in a field relevant to their intended course of postgraduate study, and can demonstrate a connection between their previous field of study and their intended field of postgraduate study.

Applicants must also meet the general eligibility criteria outlined in the ASEAN Scholarships under Indonesia Country Portfolio.

People from Eastern Indonesia (West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua and West Papua);
Individuals prioritised who are from the Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry, Mineral Resources and Energy, Marine Resources and Fisheries, (including relevant research institutions under those Ministries); Environment; Tourism; Education, Foreign Affairs, National Police, National Agency for Planning and Development and Ministry of Defence (civilian officials).

Scholarship Amounts and Method of Award

Scholarships are awarded in the form of tuition credit only.
The total award amount will be determined after a review of your application.
The total award amount is divided by the number of quarters in your program and credited equally toward each quarter's tuition (except MI Hardship Scholarship; which is a one-time award).

Application and Notification

MI Scholarships are available only to newly-enrolling students. Before you may submit a scholarship application, you must have a Letter of Acceptance from MI’s Admission Department.
Scholarship applications are available from the Financial Aid or Admissions Department or by download from this site.
Completed applications submitted by the appropriate deadline will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of the results within two weeks after the deadline.

Other Information

All scholarships are non-transferable and may not be applied to any person, program, or start date other than those for which they were originally awarded.
Scholarship recipients who fail to meet minimum academic requirements during their enrollment will forfeit any remaining award balance (see scholarship applications for specific requirements).

Musicianship Scholarship
Musicianship Scholarships are available to new instrument and vocals students (both US and non-US citizens) enrolling in the Bachelor of Music, Associate of Arts, or Certificate in Performance Programs who demonstrate outstanding musicianship. A total of ten Musicianship Scholarships (two per instrument) are awarded for each new program start. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in performance (instrument and vocals) programs only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases ( Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA or Bachelor degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for a Musicianship Scholarship, you must submit a completed application including:

An essay explaining why you should be considered for the scholarship.
A video recording displaying your performing skills. Video requirements vary by program; see application for details.

City provides a number of fully-funded, full-time, three-year Doctoral Studentships to outstanding candidates as part of its ongoing investment in academic excellence.
For entry in October 2012, we will be offering up to 70 new Doctoral Studentships.

Eligibility

University Doctoral Studentships are available to both UK/EU and overseas fee-paying students who will be studying full-time. They can be held in any School of the University.
Applicants are assessed on the basis of their research excellence or demonstrable potential and the quality of their research proposal. If you wish to be considered for a University Studentship you should discuss your proposal with the relevant School, Department or Centre to establish whether you can be supported.

What is offered

A Doctoral Studentship provides:

an annual bursary (£15,500 in 2012/13 and expected to rise in line with inflation in subsequent years);
a full tuition fee waiver;
a one-off allowance of £1,000 which may be used across the three-year period of the studentship to support research needs such as specialist training, equipment or conference attendance.

Continuation of the award after the first year is subject to confirmation by the relevant School of satisfactory progress. Studentship holders are usually expected to undertake some form of teaching support activity as part of the bursary arrangements. This will be agreed with the School concerned. Training will be provided to support any teaching activity.
The University provides a broad research and enterprise development programme to support the development of research skills.

Indonesia Leadership Awards scholarship program there that are intended for the nation's best children, high school graduate / equivalent to continuing education at universities in the world. For the year 2012, there are three partner universities for the ILA program Kyoto University, Nagoya University and Tohoku University.

The Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Group headed by Prof. Thomas Brox has openings for PostDoc and PhD positions in Computer Vision. We are seeking applicants with a strong interest in performing cutting edge research in this very active and exciting research area.

Successful candidates will join a young and dynamic research group pursuing research that has strong impact in the field. The group’s core research areas are video analysis and learning from video. You will work on recognition, structure-from-motion, or motion segmentation, but especially PostDoc candidates are encouraged to also build upon their previous research experience and may work on related computer vision or machine learning topics of their interest.

The open positions are fully funded with a salary according to TVL13 (approximately 38k-45k Euro or $46k-$54k depending on proficiency). The PhD positions come with direct supervision by the professor and support to enable completion of the thesis within 3 years. Funding for up to 2 more years is available. PostDocs will be mentored to build up their own academic career.

The University of Freiburg is one of the nine top universities in Germany, with the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Group being directly involved in the bioss cluster of excellence. The Department of Computer Science hosts many top scientists, among them renowned experts in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Freiburg, the warmest spot in Germany, is located in the very southwest, and is less than 30 minutes away from both France and Switzerland. It is situated at the foot of the Schwarzwald and is close to the Alps with many possibilities for recreational activities.

Ideal candidates should have an excellent degree (M.Sc. or equivalent for the PhD position; PhD for the PostDoc position) in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. They should have a strong mathematical background, solid programming experience in C++ and ideally Matlab. Above all, they must have a strong motivation, interest for detailed analysis, and a distinct desire to learn. Prior experience in computer vision or machine learning is advantageous and required for the PostDoc position. The PostDoc position also requires a strong track record consisting of at least one publication at ICCV, ECCV, CVPR, NIPS, or ICML. Fluency in English is required (both written and spoken).

PhD Studentship - Optical Measurement of Precision Surfaces

A postgraduate studentship is available to investigate new methods to increase the capability of optical interferometry and to introduce new levels of traceability in the measurement of precision engineering surfaces.
With the lateral resolution of a few micrometres and an axial resolution of a few nanometres interferometery is becoming an increasingly popular means to characterise engineering surfaces. As a non-contacting technique, commercial interferometers make an indirect estimate of surface form deduced from measurements of the light scattered from the surface. Due to the complex interaction between light and rough surfaces anomalous behaviour can occur and, for this reason, traditional contacting methods making more direct measurements using stylus-based instrumentation remain the basis of international (ISO) surface standards. The purpose of this project is to develop optimisation strategies based on new, more sophisticated surface scattering models to increase measurement capability and to estimate uncertainty in optical interferometers.
The project is sponsored by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Taylor Hobson Ltd. It is expected that the student will spend some time at one or both of the industrial partners' premises.
A first degree (First class or High 2:1 honours) in the physical sciences or mathematics is required and an interest in optics would be an advantage. Strong analysis skills and proficiency in numerical computing are essential and experience of optimisation techniques would be an advantage.
The preferred starting dates are 1 October 2010 or 1 December 2010 and the studentship will have a stipend of £8,000-£11,500 per annum, tax free, plus tuition fees. This studentship is open to UK/EU and international students.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree or a degree equivalent to a four-year standard baccalaureate degree in any discipline from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.

BI Norwegian School of Management offers a four year Ph.D. programme in business administration. The 1-year Master in Public Administration (MPA) programme provides an intensive, interdisciplinary course of study for experienced professionals who wish to acquire new knowledge and skills to enhance their leadership and managerial capabilities. This innovative programme can be taken full-time or part-time.

Taught by expert faculty using a problem-based learning approach and real-world case studies, MPA students learn to apply the techniques of policy analysis and programme evaluation to resolve complex multi-dimensional policy challenges, as well as sharpen their leadership and communication skills. The School also conducts an active programme of seminars and public lectures by political, not-for-profit and business leaders to enable all students to complement their formal learning with the opportunity to interact with distinguished individuals who are shaping the future.

The MPA class comprises approximately 60 accomplished and motivated individuals who bring with them a wealth of diverse experiences to enhance the classroom learning experience. Students come from many different countries – from Southeast Asia, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific and Africa. Job description
PhD in statistical methodology in vaccine and infectious disease research. The research activities are part of an interuniversity collaboration between the Institute VAXINFECTIO of the University of Antwerp, and the Center for Statistics, Hasselt University. The main interdisciplinary research themes are i) to improve and/or increase the understanding of the immune system, ii) to develop strategies for the containment of antibiotic resistance and iii) to develop new methodology in modeling infectious disease spread.
Profile

you have a strong quantitative background;
you are intrinsically motivated, think analytically and creatively, and work in an organised and focused manner;
you enjoy working in an multidisciplinary environment (statistics, epidemiology, medical sciences, life sciences);
experience in the use of statistical/mathematical software such as SAS, R, etc., is a plus.

The MMMF awards grants of approximetly US$12,000 each; grants are not renewable. The newly established Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers analyzes the emerging power shifts among non-European regions and states, related conflicts with respect to regional leadership within these regions as well as competition for spheres of influence, and the global formation of governance structures among new regional powers and the "old" powers of the OECD world. Applications are invited for one PhD position in the Environmental Chemistry Group of Prof. Kristopher McNeill at ETH Zurich. The research is focused on the development and implementation of chemical probes for reactive oxygen species. The ultimate goal of the research is to determine the mechanisms involved in photochemical virus inactivation, relevant to natural and engineered water purification. This project will bring together chemical synthesis, photochemistry, spectroscopy, and novel analytical techniques, and is a collaborative effort with the group of Prof. Tamar Kohn at EPFL. This project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The ideal candidate will have experience in synthetic organic chemistry and a strong interest in environmental organic chemistry. Good knowledge of English (spoken and written) is essential. Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, chemistry, or a related discipline. Employment will be according to standard regulations at ETH (funding secured for 3 years). The project will start in February 2010 or later upon mutual agreement.

Starting January 2010, the laboratory of Environmetry and Geomatics (UCL/AGRO/MILA/ENGE) is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Ph.D. student in the framework of a joint research project entitled “Modelling the distribution of sediment, water, carbon and energy fluxes along the hillslope”.

· About the project

A recent key area of interest is the characterization of linkage between masses and energy fluxes of water, carbon, and energy fluxes at the geomorphologic hillslope level, as their coupling induce spatially and temporally structured patterns with non negligible attached uncertainties. The final objective is to obtain a reliable model at the hillslope scale, with possible extensions at the regional level.

· Working environment

The successful candidate will lead the statistical/physical data analysis and modeling part of the project, among a team of three Ph.D. students. He/She will work mainly inside the Environmetry and Geomatics (UCL/AGRO/MILA/ENGE) research team of the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (http://www.uclouvain.be/mila).

· Expected candidate profile

o master diploma in bioengineering, civil engineering, physics, mathematics (statistical orientation) or equivalent diplomas.

o great fondness for statistical data analysis and modelling. Sound knowledge in physical and statistical modeling for environmental sciences is a clear benefit.

The ReLoClim Research Group (www.wegcenter.at/reloclim) of the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change develops climate scenarios and investigates the regional impacts of climate change in the framework of national and international projects. We are searching for a new member (PhD student) of our highly motivated young research team. The successful applicant will work in the framework of the project CC-Snow (Effects of Climate Change on Future Snow Conditions in Tyrol and Styria, ACRP) and will be responsible for integration of climate scenarios into high resolution snow models. This includes the development and advancement of empirical-statistical climate downscaling algorithms as well as the design of online coupling strategies for climate and snow models.
