We will be rolling out a new AMEX processing fee beginning June 1, 2013. We have tried hard to keep GetQuik a fee free marketplace for our customers, and have resisted any customer fees to date. However, the high cost of American Express processing fee has made pushed us to institute a 1.0% processing fee for AMEX transactions. This processing fee will roll-out June 1, 2013.

Customer using Visa, Mastercard, Discover or a GetQuik billing account will not be impacted by this fee. Google, Apple, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter are shining examples of how having great employees and benefit programs can lead to out-sized economic and social impact.

One of the key elements of the Silicon Valley culture is the concept of team building and treating employees as family members. Google has famously creating a world class free cafeteria for its employees, and all their employees have done in return is:

classify the world's information with a simple keyword search,
build a self-driving car,
create the world's most popular smartphone operation system,
offer free email for hundreds of millions of people, and
manage a video sharing site that servers over 1 billion people every month.

If you ask any Googler, they will confirm that the free lunch program is a huge part of their corporate culture. Ditto at LinkedIn, Yelp, Facebook, and Twitter. So the IRS is considering taxing this lunch benefit for companies. If this tax were to go into effect, the lunch benefit as we know it will begin to disappear from a number of companies. The most successful cash-rich companies will likely continue the lunch benefit regardless of the tax classification. However, the next Facebook or LinkedIn may reduce or remove the benefit. This would mean that the talent wars would shift that much more towards larger corporations, and away from the high-growth companies looking to challenge these giants. Instead of looking to make a few dollars in taxes by creating such an ill conceived tax, this tax will effectively slow down the fast growth engine that Silicon Valley has been for the last half century. The government should be looking at encouraging other regions such as Austin, Boston, NYC, and other up-and-coming innovations centers to take the best practices of Silicon Valley and mimicking these. Programs such as employee stock options and employee benefit programs are part of the Silicon Valley culture and should be encouraged instead of taxed.

Hope you are having a happy and festive holiday break. If you are scratching your head wondering why something seems different about GetQuik, you are not mistaken. We have rolled out a new user interface.

PICTURE THIS
With the new user interface, you will get a more visual menu page, allowing for easier ordering. We will be added more pictures as we go, so initially some pages may be sparse. This new interface will be more "touch-friendly" and we will be optimizing for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Windows Phone sessions. Once we finish up the mobile and table optimized versions, we'll let you know.

BUGS?
We have been testing the new interface over the last couple of months, and we believe that MOST of the bugs have been stomped out. However, we expect that we will be running into some fun and unexpected bugs. We will be working extra hard during the first few weeks to clear the new user interface of these bugs. GetQuik Does Food Trucks
The food truck phenomenon is showing incredible staying power. We have received a number of inquiries from our corporate customers on the availability of food trucks via the GetQuik service.

We are pleased to announce that this option is now available for our customers. We are currently doing a roll-out of the program in the San Francisco Bay Area.

There are some subtle differences in the ordering, payment and catering process for food trucks, and GetQuik is available to assist in all phases of the process.

Requirements to Food Truck
Our initial discussions with the more popular food trucks in the area has been overwhelmingly positive. Our rep Andrew has found that these truck owners are excited about serving GetQuik customers. They love the fact that we can streamline the coordination and billing process for these corporate engagements.

A couple of important requirments:

Minimum Guarantee: If you wish to have a "food truck" day for your company, you will need a pretty high "head-count" guarantee. We are looking at anywhere from 50 or even 100 people minimum depending on the truck. Note: If you have a smaller group but are still wanting to have a food truck day, contact GetQuik at 408-884-3889 or support@getquik.com. We will see if we can work something out for your company.
Advance Notice: The trucks can have pretty eclectic schedules, so if you are wanting to secure a truck for your event, it is best to book days in advance.

Pricing
There are a few different ways to handle the pricing and billing for your event. There can be a "per person" price/meal, an "all you can eat" price, or an "a la carte" pricing system.

We have found that issuing tickets to your employees with a "value" to the ticket is a great way to track and know how much you are paying for your catering meal.

Some trucks have a service fee and travel fee, which we can let you know about so you can get a handle on the fully-loaded cost for the event.

One Truck, Two Trucks, Red Truck, Blue Truck
If you have a huge event or group, it makes sense to consider going with more than one truck. We believe the ideal size per truck is around 125-150 people over a 2-3 hour period. For example, if you have 250 people for your event, two trucks is a good plan.

GetQuik: Feed My Company - Hold the Fees!

For office managers, facility managers, and administrative assistants tasked with keeping their staff feed, this job is easier said then done.

Here is the check list for success:

Research qualified restaurants and caterers who can handle your meal request.
Come up with a menu that meets your groups meal preferences.
Coordinate and place the orders with appropriate restaurant and caterers.
Ensure the meal is within your company's meal budget.

Fortunately, there are a variety of services for meal planners to simplify the process. GetQuik is one of these companies. We offer two primary plans for companies:

In this situation, an admin or service provider has to factor in the extra fees that the meal planning or delivery service provides into their overall equation.

Total Budget: $240

For the order with the 7% fee, each person's meal can order $9.41 worth of food off the menu.
For the order with NO FEE, each person's meal can order $10.25 worth of food off the menu.
This translate into a 8.9% improvement in per person meal budget over the 7% fee service offering.

WHY THIS MATTERS!
By taking on the service fee for the meal planning or delivery service, the meal can have TWO major issues:

Not enough food. Heaven help the meal coordinator who has to deal with a group of hungry colleagues due to the "We ran out of food!" dilemma. By devoting 8.9% of our budget to fees, is your team getting enough to eat?

What to Consider When Evaluating GoDaddy's Dedicated Server Service
Based on our experience with GoDaddy, we have to strongly caution those considering this product.

GoDaddy's core capability is in its domain services. We are still using GoDaddy for our domain services, and we see no reason not to continue using them for this service. We also use them for some of our email requirements.

We never did use GoDaddy for their virtual server product or their managed service products, so we cannot comment on those products. I would expect that for some non-mission critical hosting requirements, that GoDaddy's virtual hosting offering is likely a very viable product.

Based on our experience in working with the GoDaddy Dedicated Server technical support, I would be concerned about the service levels of even their Managed Hosting service, but perhaps their service levels are much superior to the Dedicated Server offering.

You Are On Your Own
With the Dedicated Server product line, you are fully responsible for managing, preventing, protecting, detecting and reporting issues on your server. From our experience GoDaddy does not take proactive initiative to diagnose any root cause issues. Considering that we were constantly asking their tech support folks if they had any ideas, the response was underwhelming. Even when we requested certain more directly support requests, the coordination and execution of these requests were unsatisfactory. GoDaddy will carry out requests such as asking them to do a hardware check, but when those hardware resolutions did not solve the problem, there was a complete lack of follow up or deeper investigation to discover what the actually cause of the problem may be.

Communication Breakdown
Without having access to the actual data center technicians, requests are often delayed, and there is a lack of a proper two-way dialog to come up with a viable action plan to solve the issues. After weeks of major problems, we continued to request to be able to talk directly with a data center technician on the phone, and are requests were flatly declined. We explained that the method of opening a chat or ticket was not producing a solution to our problems. The answer was pretty much that any direct communication with the data center team was out of the question.

Pricing is Attractive But Not Massively Lower
It is true that GoDaddy's pricing for their Dedicated Server product is very competitive against other hosting providers, but there are other hosting companies who are well in line with their pricing, so considering the service support, we recommend you do some research on the service procedures of the various GoDaddy competitors before making a final decision.

Technical Knowledge?
Because of our inability to speak directly with the Data Center technicians, we have very little to go on regarding the technical strength of GoDaddy technicians. Due to the frustrating ticket system, our inability to resolve our technical problems despite weeks of consistent problems, and our fiasco with the failed mirrored drive setup, our impression of the technical strength of the GoDaddy Data Center folks is low.

Good Luck
So we hope that folks that are looking to research GoDaddy's Dedicated Hosting service will find this series of blog posts and be better informed on the challenges with using this product. We also hope that GoDaddy will consider improvements and changes to their support escalation procedures, and perhaps this blog series might influence them to revisit their processes. For the good of both GoDaddy and customers like GetQuik, it would be a positive direction.

Limping to the Finish Line
After the Tuesday debacle, we are motivated to get moving to our new server environment. As we expect, Wednesday, February 29th brings new crashes to deal with. The database server is still crashing regularly, and we are motivated to go live with the new servers asap.

New Servers Almost Ready
After an anxious Wednesday of crashes, we are worried that we can go another day without the database crashing for good. We are close to going live with the new hosting servers, but not quite. Thursday turns out to be another day with regular crashes, but we survive.

Cut Over and Stabalizing
Friday, February 2nd was a good day. We finally make it over to the new servers, and our GoDaddy issues are now in the past. Although we have a few minor glitches, the new hosting servers are up and running. Two days into the server, we have not had one crash. It is early yet to make a determination if this new hosting provider is going to fit the bill, but we are much more confident that we made a better choice. The time we have had to work with the technical team for our new hosting provider is already a complete different experience from the GoDaddy support process. We are talking directly with the data center support team, and they have handled complex requests that we needed assistance with already. This would not be the case with GoDaddy.

What Ever Happened to the Mirror?
One of the major issues we ran into with the Tuesday outage was the fact that our RAID 1 mirror failed. Despite the massive failures and problems, we were not expecting to have both of our drives wiped out. Although these fault tolerant solutions are not full proof, we are skeptical about the handling of the RAID 1 configuration request considering all the problems we experienced with our servers, and our lack of proactive assistance to investigate, protect and mitigate against such disaster situations.

The final chapter in this sad story is to assess the situation with the GoDaddy Dedicated Hosting service.

New Service Selected
On Monday, February 27th we sign the contract with our new hosting provider. We are racing the clock to get our new servers provisioned, as now again the GoDaddy web and database servers are crashing on a regular basis. We are up to around 2-3 crashes per server per day.

The Leap Day Eve Curse
6:50AM
We wake-up on Tuesday to a down web server. Since the web server has been behaving better than the database server, we expect that we can get the server backup without too much incident. We chat with GoDaddy to please get our server back up. This is a standard event these days, as we are talking with GoDaddy a few times via chat a day to revive our servers.

Checking in on GoDaddy. No update on the ticket.

Ok, wow. Bad news. We were thinking the database server was more at risk than the web server. We request that they reprovision the server per their email. What choice do we have right? Our new hosting servers are now ready, but we have to configure them and test them so it is better to restore on GoDaddy for now.

$150 Dollar Insult
Yes we want our data. We agree to pay the $150 in order that they can take our drives out and move them over to the new reprovisioned GoDaddy server.

February 28th, 4:17PM - Reprovisioning Complete
We are at the mercy of GoDaddy as they reprovision our new database server. More than 8 hours of downtime before the reprovisioned server is up and available.

Time to Restore
So after accessing the server, we notice that we can not see the external drives from the server.

After a few chats with GoDaddy we are informed that the data center techs cannot get either of the drives to spin, and so all the data from the web server is now gone. The implication is that instead of more simple restore process, our technical team then has to reconfigure the server and restore the system from our backups.

This turns out to be a lengthy process for the GetQuik technical team. Our tem needs to set up the server environment, reinstalling the GetQuik software, and test the system. This goes on for many hours, and we decide to go live with the server Wednesday morning.

We are through the worst, and we have one final hurdle. We need to get through the migration to our new hosting provider before the GoDaddy's server crash again.
