Brisbane River

Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens

These gardens cover 52 hectares and house an array of subtropical and Australian flora. With lakes and streams there is also the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium which is popular with children. The gardens are 7 kilometres from the city and entry is free. There are many different themed gardens to explore and a Hide 'n' Seek Trial for the children.

Queen Street Mall

The Queen Street Mall is a pedestrian walkway in the heart of the city with plenty of shops and cafes and often there is free entertainment on the performance stage. It hosts around 26 million visitors a year and is Queensland's hub of fashion and retail. The Brisbane Visitor Information Centre is also located in the Queen Street Mall where you can get more ideas for your holiday.

New Farm Park

Overlooking the water, New Farm Park is a lovely destination for the whole family. With huge fig trees for the children to play around there is also a fantastic playground with an area for toddlers, as well as more challenging equipment for the older ones. The Vorab Glacier and Crap Sogn Gion attract much of the cross country skiing crowd while Foppa and Nagens represent an awesome downhill alternative for beginner and intermediate skiers. The lodging accommodations are reasonable and isn't as pretentious as say Gstaad. What sets this location apart from the others are the slopes accesabile only by helicopter. Griendwald has some of the best helicopter skiing in the world! In addition, you will be amazed to find that Grindelwald is a hub for activity. If you ever get tired of the slopes, (highley unlikely) Grindelwald is filled with museums, top notch golf courses, and a wide array of other adventure sports.

3. St. Moritz- Want to experience a resort full of rich history, world class lodging, and 300+ days of sunshine? If so, then St. Moritz is the place for you! Located in the far south east corner of Switzerland, St. Moritz is one of the most famous destinations in Switzerland. Living on the Mountaintop While Residing in the Valley

How many of you have ever had a mountaintop experience? You were at a conference, a powerful church service, a small group or family cell night event where the Lord moved. You were on a missions trip, or you were all alone at home in your living room on your face just loving your Lord and Savior.

I have had many of those mountaintop experiences, times when my spirit was revitalized and I was sure I could conquer the world, no matter what trial or tribulation I faced. But then something completely revolutionary happened, time passed and the mountaintop experience faded and the trials and tribulations got harder than I imagined they could ever get.

I live in South Central Pennsylvania in the Great Cumberland Valley tucked away between two ranges of the Appalachians. I can stand and spin in a circle and see mountains. If I were to hike to the top of the mountains I would have a great vision for the beauty of the world around me but as it is in the valley I can't see past the valley, my immediate circumstances.

I believe that when we have our mountaintop experiences we're given a glimpse of the great things that God has in store for us. So how do we live everyday with a Mountaintop vision when we have a valley view? I think the answer is simple we need to hike up the mountain everyday. For some that means spending time in worship, for others it may be watching a teaching series or listening to a CD. Some might find reading a book can help usher them into the throne room, and I think all will find the Bible quite helpful. What I'm saying is we need to get a hold of God everyday and ask Him to see the way He does.

Imagine the world outside the valley as the world the way God wants it to be His Kingdom has come and His will is being done. That is what we get a glimpse of when we have those mountaintop experiences. God doesn't want mountaintop experiences to be something that happens occasionally but a way to live everyday life. He wants us to live in the valleys, in the fields, in the marketplaces and in our homes, but he wants us to view the potential of all those places the way he does from the mountaintop.

New Zealand had been one of the places my back packing friends cheered about. They all had positive reviews about the country and i had only just heard about the name of the country during that conversation. Luckily i chose to visit the country and see for myself what my friends were raving about, so many years back. Most of my favourite locations, still burn in my head very clearly and that is why they are my favourite.

This article will be broken up into regions and what places i loved in those regions. So lets begin.

1.The Main North Island:

Northland: The places you should see in the Northland are listed below-
Russell: it is a quiet town that includes tourism, fishing, oyster farming and cottage industries. The Russell museum has models of captain cooks endeavour; author Zane Grey and early settler memorabilia. Christ Church is the countries oldest church and a great contributor to the church who visited New Zealand was Charles Darwin. Pompallier Mission is the countries oldest standing industrial building.
Waitangi Treaty House: This is where the treaty of Waitangi was signed and there is on February 6th a 'Waitangi Day' celebrated by the whole country. This is where Maoris' and government leaders meet up. There are guided tours, to help let you understand more about the traditional part of New Zealand and its past.
Cape Reinga: Its meaning stands for 'Underworld'. To Maoris' it means that this is where spirits leave for their journey. You can see the Tasman Sea that clashes with the Pacific Ocean from here, but do not think this is not the end of the country.

2. Auckland: The places you should see in Auckland are listed below-

One Tree Hill: It is an old volcanic cone and a large prehistoric Maori settlement. Its name was given by a single tree that stood on a hill, but now several trees stand there. Cornwall Park is below. Accacia Cottage stands there and near the entrance of the park is a Stardome Observatory. This Observatory has telescopes that can view the stars and other related astronomy ideas.
Sky Tower: This is the countries tallest building and is visited by almost one million people a year. There are four levels. You can also sky jump which is bungy jump or sky walk along the tower as an adrenalin rush.

The main level offers free audio guides, live weather forecast and touch screen computers. The lower level is the sky lounge cafe. The section of the tower, called the Orbit is a revolving a la carte' restaurant. It completes one full turn every 1 hour. The sky deck has a 360 degree view through seamless glass and is very popular.

Rangitoto: This use to be a volcano and when it erupted, it formed an island. The island is covered in native tree and shrubs. Mangroves, mosses and tree daisies are some of the vegetation that grows there. This island is good for walking or as an alternative; you can explore the island on a train drawn tractor.

3. The Central North Island: The places you should see in the Central North Island are listed below-

Hamilton: There are attractive parks and gardens that all are found off maze like footpaths. The parks and gardens are bordered by the river. There are cruises that will help you explore the best views of Hamilton from the river. New Zealand Art Collections can be found at Waikato Museum of Art and History. Hamilton Garden is the most popular attraction because it is set beside Waikato River. The gardens could be show casing Japanese, Chinese or English Gardens and seasonal displays as well. Over Waikato, fiestas for balloonists are held and National Agriculture Field days is a large agriculture trade show.
Coromandel Peninsula: An old gold mining area near Commandel Town. The town boomed in population, when it further sited more gold after its first sighting in 1867. There use to be three live theatres and over 100 hotels that sold alcohol. This mining later declined as other places were of more interests to mine at.
East Cape and The East Coast: The roads are near rocky coastline and are guided by local trees. Most beaches are suitable for swimming, fishing and diving. You could jet boat, horse trek and tramp. Along the Motu River, you can see the Raukokore Church, East Cape Lighthouse, Tiki-tiki's St Mary's Church, Mount Kikurangi, Tokomaru Bay and Tolaga Bay all in order. You just simply follow the river because it acts like a guide that is simple to follow and is fool proof.
White Island: This place has the most active volcano and lies at the north end of Taupo and Rotorua. It can be reached by a helicopter or boat, or you can aerial view it from above. The land looks like the colour of Mars and the texture of the moon. It was mined for sulphur but an eruption exploded and all miners were killed. There are still mining activities left as proof that mining occurred.

4. Wellington and The South: The places you should see in Wellington and The South are listed below-

Kapiti Island Nature Reserve: It is not far off from the mainland. This reserve protects wildlife; a permit to visit the island is the only way to see this reserve. You can also have trips around the island, dive or fish around the waters that surround the island at anytime. Rare birds or birds from the mainland like Takahe call it home.
Whanganui National Park: It is a forest surrounding the river and the river is the heart of the park. Fish live in the river, ferns, river side plants and birds call it home. You can canoe, kayak, raft, jet boat, tramp, fish or hunt for deer and goat. There are cruises as well.
Mt Taranaki/ Egmont: This is a dormant volcano. It is always covered in ice and snow. There is a network of tracks that let you climb, ski and tramp if you are fit. For an average walker, there are tracks for you as well. This formation is believed to have formed after a volcanic eruption over 70,000 years ago. This mountain is sacred to Maoris'.

5. Marlborough and Nelson: The places you should see in Marlborough and Nelson are listed below-

Kaikoura: You will be observing, marine life like sperm whales, Orca and a variety of dolphin species. You can see them from the shore, in the air or both in and out of the water. Sea bird species like the Royal Albatross and Black Browed Molly Mawk can be seen as well.
Wairu Valley Vineyard Tour: This is where Sauvigon Blanc is made. This also is the countries largest and best known wine region. Nearly 70 wineries operate in the area and the wines of Wairu are celebrated on the annual Wine Marlborough Festival on February.
Marlborough Sounds: This place has many bays, inlets and coves. There are many walking tracks, wildlife and historical sites to visit. The best way to see this place is by bicycle and sea kayak or on foot.

6. Canterbury and The West Coast: The places you should see in Canterbury and The West Coast are listed below-

Canterbury: Good roads and communications keep the far away farms connected. This is where you will see the iconic sheep that New Zealand is famous for. Trust me, you will see many. This place is unique but in a beautiful way.

7. Otago and Southland: The places you should see in Otago and Southland are listed below-

Queenstown: This place has adventure sports like bungy jumping. The people are kind and inviting, even though they live in a tourism demanding lifestyle.
Dunedin: The building is interesting and architectural. Parks and centres are in walking distance. There are hills that you can enjoy a harbour view of the city below.

I could explain more but that would just be spoiling you and letting you think to yourself "Well since she has already told me the main sites, I guess i do not have the same motivation anymore to go see New Zealand". Hong Kong Becomes Favourite Family Holiday Destination

I went to Hong Kong with my husband to experience something exotic and we weren't disappointed - the bustle, the skyscrapers, the food markets, the rattling trams, the boat people - all the sounds and smells of the orient. But it's not a destination I would have associated with family holidays - until now that is.

I'll be honest, I was quite surprised to see families with young children tucking into the breakfast buffet at our hotel, the Cosmopolitan in Causeway Bay area. The travel writer in me couldn't resist finding out what they were up to. Here's what one family told me:

"We're on our way to Australia to visit Carol's brother, who lives there. Carol and I wanted to see Hong Kong but we knew the children wouldn't be too keen just sight-seeing so we decided to have a four day stop-over and include a day out at Ocean Park. It's really good. You need a full day there. The aquarium is just amazing. You really feel as though you're at the bottom of the ocean, right in amongst all the sea creatures and coral. But it's a whole theme park as well, fountains, light shows, rides - the kids loved it."

Carol and Bob had found the family holiday offer on the internet. It combined the accommodation at the Cosmopolitan, in their Ocean Park theme suite, with transport and tickets for the day out at the theme park.

Having tired themselves out at Ocean Park on the previous day, they said they were planning to take it easy for a few hours before walking down to the street markets which open around noon. The children were more than happy to get back upstairs because there was a Wii game in the room.

Carol added that the suite had cartoons on DVD as well, plus various cuddly toys based on Ocean Park, and children's snack boxes, so they thought they might get away with booking the hotel's free baby-sitting service later in the day and take the opportunity to treat themselves to a cocktail in the bar.

As families do, I suspected they had ordered their children to eat as much as possible at breakfast time! We were actually doing the same. The buffet was open until 10:30 am so we certainly didn't need any lunch.

I loved the choice of foods. My husband was a bit conservative and plumped for cereal followed by bacon and a custom-cooked omelette but I tried almost everything. There were salads, meats, bread, waffles, jams, sauces (mango syrup on yoghurt and creamy muesli - my favourite!), cakes, rice, noodles, broth, dim sum, fruit - it was a shame to be full up and have to stop.

You can understand what a boon it is to have such a choice when you have children with you. I couldn't believe how much Bob and Carol's two put away, considering what slender sticks they were.

Eating out in Hong Kong is fairly cheap, which gives it another plus point if you're bringing your children. The streets are full of small cafes which offer the kind of food children tend to like: rice and noodle dishes which often cost less than £3 with glasses of weak tea to wash it down. (If you don't like the tea, don't drink it because as soon as your glass is empty, it will be re-filled!)

Although an Ocean Park visit will probably be your children's highlight, it's a lot of fun riding around the city on the top deck of a tram, and that costs almost nothing, less than 20p per journey. All you have to do is drop the coins in a box when you get off.

There are not many places in the world where you can combine the excitement of the big city with the excitement of a theme park so easily in such a small area. Hong Kong is full of surprises.

Sightseeing in Bangkok

I first went to Thailand in April, 2008. I wanted to meet my friend there. She was thinking about re-locating to Thailand.

On our first day in Bangkok together, we took a tour of the city by riverboat. The boat ride took around 1 hour. We saw more of Bangkok during that ride than we ever did during a walking tour. During the ride, a woman in a sampan paddled up to us and offered us refreshments. We felt really wonderful,with the fresh breeze in our face and Bangkok moving all around us!

During our stay, we visited the Wat Po Buddhist temple. This is home to the statue of the reclining Buddha, one of the leading tourist attractions in Bangkok. The statue is 18 meters high and 48 meters long. We said prayers by the statue as a token of respect. We walked around the temple grounds and were greatly impressed by the grand design of it all. The temple is definitely worth a second look for tourists.

In our travels, we visited the Royal Lapidary jewelry exchange. Thailand is one of the leading sources of precious stones in the world. The display of precious stones in the exchange there is superb! My friend and i did not buy any jewels there, only gifts for our friends. A word to the wise, there have been many reports of scams with gems. Gems that are not authentic, or jewels where no refunds were allowed after purchase. We cannot attest to that as we did not buy any stones there.

On our last night in Bangkok, my friend and I went to a nice Thai restaurant near our hotel. We ordered ostrich steak! It was great and yes - it tasted just like chicken! My friend decided not to relocate to Thailand. We left Bangkok. She returned to the Philippines and I returned to the U.S.

My impressions of Thailand are generally favorable. However, there are many con artists and scams in Bangkok which tourists should be on the alert for. My advice to tourists is to not to be too trusting of strangers and use your good intuition and judgement.

I know that the great majority of Thai people are wonderful. That is why they call Thailand - the land of smiles!

The traditional industry of the region is farming, and this fell into decline, but this has seen a massive improvement in recent years with sustainable tourism to the fore. Agricultural schemes such as hillside terrace farming and irrigation has improved the lot of farmers here.

The following are the villages of Cinque Terre:

Corniglia - This is the only village to be located above sea level. It is shaped like a pinecone with narrow alley streets. The farming terraces are perched right above the sea.

Riomaggiore - A pretty village with tall houses with plenty of tourist activities.

Monterosso Al Mare - A well-known seaside resort, with plenty of beaches.

Manarola - A peaceful yet modern tourist village that offers a great rocky cove for swimmers, plus a nature park that is great for relaxing.

Vernazza - A charming fishing port with small houses around the harbour, and the presence of a tower called the Castello Doria. The piazza by the harbour is filled with excellent eateries and bars in a relaxed atmosphere.

Taormina, Sicily

Located on the island of Sicily, Taormina is located right next to Mount Etna, the volcano that is still regarded as active. One of the most popular destinations in Italy, it is a resort with wonderful views and an astounding Greco-Roman theatre, called the Teatro Greco, which is perched at a height above the sea, and facing Etna.

There are other archaeological sights that can be seen around Taormina. The main one is obviously the Greek Theatre, which was designed by the Romans. Quite near the Teatro Greco are the ruins of a smaller theatre. Corso Umberto is the main shopping thoroughfare in Taormina. Other places to check out are the Trevelyan Gardens - with walkways lined with benches and wonderful foliage. The Museo Archeologico is located in the 14th century Badia Vecchia Tower, with Roman, Greek and Byzantine artetacts.

While in Taormina you will be looking at the warm, crystal clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, and in particular the wonderful Bay of Isola Bella. This island is a terrific nature reserve. It is possible to access this island on foot in low tides, or by taking a cable car.

Monte Argentario, Tuscany

This is a large hilly area in beautiful Tuscany, in the Grossetto Province. The area is home to a nature reserve and some fabulous beaches. At one time, this area was an island, but over the ages it was joined to the mainland by three sand bars, which are now shrouded in woodland and kept apart by lagoons.

Two areas you should check out in this region include Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole. These are harbour locations and good base to discover the entire region or just a peaceful and relaxing break.

Rhodes (or Rodos) is the largest of the Greek Dodecanese Islands, and is located in the Aegean Sea. A mix of young tourists clubbing, people looking to explore the history and beautiful beaches make up the main tourism here, on this very popular island.

What is Rhodes like?

Rhodes has a mix of tourist traps and nice sites to see. To make the most out of the island it is good to hire a car or book excursions so you can see the more historical places as well as the main coastline.

Main Towns

There are many resorts in Rhodes, which offer different things and are scattered all around the island, some main ones which tourists find popular are Trianda, Ixia, Rhodes Town, Pefkos and Kalathos. Faliraki is also situated on Rhodes.

Trianda is a short way up the coast from Ixia. Ixia is popular with tourists and has a thin shingled beach. There are many tavernas, bars and restaurants and the area comes to life at night where you can walk to Rhodes town. Very tourist centred, there are supermarkets and many facilities to make families comfortable here. Trianda is similar, only it is slightly less tourist driven, with more locals and a Greek atmosphere.

Rhodes town is made up of 3 parts: the modern part, a medieval walled city (which has World Heritage Status) and the ancient city, which is shown in more depth in the Archaeological Museum, as much is buried now. This is a great place to go if you are prepared to travel and want to see the older historical cities. Bear in mind the beach is quite pebbly and the resort is not very family orientated if you have younger children.

Pefkos is more family orientated. A sand and shingle beach leads on to rock pools and little paths to explore, whilst there is an English vibe with many cafes and bars for people, as well as good connections to other resorts and Rhodes Town itself.

Kalathos, although quiet, is a good foothold in Rhodes for those who want to explore the island. A village with a small beach and some touristy supermarkets, there is a lovely church there and it is in a good location to be able to travel around more.

Faliraki is a typical party central, popular with the younger tourists and boasting many beach activities and a great nightlife.

Things to do

There are many watersports available along the coast of Rhodes, so beach fun is always on the agenda. Around popular Falraki you can find go-karting and other family activities, as well as a water park with flumes and such like.

Try trips out to other parts of the island to see some of the better sights. Recommendations are Monolithos Castle, which was built by the Knights of St. John on top of a large rocky area, nearby is a smaller more secluded beach area called Fourni, with sand and shingles, as well as some caves to explore.

For adults, a trip to Embonas may be good, to sample Rhodes wine and view the vineyards. Families, however, could opt for Petaloudes Valley, otherwise known as the Valley of the Butterflies. Home to many large Jersey Tiger moths, this is a pleasant walk and a good day out.

Overall, Rhodes is a typical tourist destination, and so offers all you would expect from that, as well as some nice historical sites if you are prepared to travel a little further.

Embrace the short haul. Instead of dreaming of that far away Bora Bora water bungalow, research closer, more attainable locales. Areas that are between 3-6 hour drives. This length of trip provides just enough feeling of getting away, without draining your wallet. Be sure to make a mixed tape or eight track for the drive- something special that will surprise your loved one with each opening music cue. Lastly, don't forget to turn the radio off as well- good conversation has always been stoked by the purring engine of the open highway.

Do something completely different. If the two of you have never cruised, cruise. Miniature golfed, pick up the short stick. Doing something out of both of your comfort zones immediately creates a sense of togetherness, warmth and exciting new memories. Many couple make the mistake of trying something new on their anniversary- the downfall is if the experience isn't well received, the important date is ruined that year. But don't be disheartened, next year, find that local motel.
