I love fall and I love decorating for fall. It has been a little challenging here in SW Florida especially since it is just around 85 degrees usually this time of year. Back up in NJ I would have pots of mums, corn stalks, hay bales and pumpkins. I tried my first year here and even though I watered daily my mums never did well, I haven’t even seen corn stalks anywhere, I worry about bugs getting in the hay and I tried pumpkins, we carved and they lasted a day. We can paint them and they last pretty good, but the kiddies love to carve them. I found this idea for keeping your carved pumpkins from molding and I am going to give it a try, we will see how we make out this year. We just got our pumpkins today so we will be carving tonight or tomorrow afternoon.

Since I can’t decorate with a bunch of real pumpkins around the inside and outside of the house I have made some and you can check them out here. This year I was going to buy some of the carve-able pumpkins that they sell at the craft store; that is until I saw the prices! The ones I wanted were $24.99 each! Even with a coupon I could not justify spending that much on 3 pumpkins. Well the hunt was now on for ideas on how I could make pumpkins that looked semi “real”. I found this wonderful post from Instructables here. I figured it was worth a shot:) I went to the dollar store and got the punchy balloons, and bought two newspapers, I already had flour and twine at home. Here is how I made mine:

First I got all the supplies together and started cutting the newspaper into strips

I put the flour in the bowl and added water to make my “glue”. Don’t add too much or it will be too thin and runny, I made mine to be the consistency of Mod Podge.

Then you want to blow up your balloons, but don’t tie yet.

I used a binder clip to hold the air in so I could wrap the twine around the balloon

Tie the twine to the end that has the rubber band that is used for punching the balloon.

I then cut off the rubber band because it got in the way when trying to wrap the twine around the balloon.

Then wrap around opposite end where the binder clip is and come back up the other side.

This is how it will look when you are done.

Now hold the balloon opening and remove the binder clip and blow up some more and this will give it the pumpkin indentations.

I put the balloon on top of a bowl so it wouldn’t roll around while I was working on it. Now put strips in the “glue” and I started out by going over the twine first.

It is messy!

I wet my hands with the mixture and put a very light coat on the balloon, it seemed to help the strips from sliding.

The end that I tied the balloon off I started making the stem of the pumpkin by wrapping it with the strips.

I kept a little circular spot around the bottom undone so I would be able to pop the balloon and put in a battery operated tea light if I carve it. Just keep going until the balloon is completely covered.

To make doing the bottom easier I just put the top part upside down in a bowl and it didn’t roll around.

I got a hanger and looped the end of the tied off twine over it.

Then it was drying time! It took two days for mine to dry in my garage. I am in Florida though so it is quite warm to help with the drying time. It said in the original post that it takes 3 days.

Onto to the other two I have left:)

Oops!

When it was dry I got out my little sander and gave it a quick once over to smooth it out.

I then painted them pumpkin orange and added some black and painted another coat of orange.

After that I got out my Old English scratch remover for dark woods and rubbed it on and it got a nice dull orange look. The one in the front has the Old English and the two in the back don’t, so you can see the difference.

I wrung out the excess and put on small pieces or foil so I could get some bend in them like real leaves do.

Once they were dry I wrapped the stems in twine and attached 2 leaves to each pumpkin.

Any one that has tile knows that grout can be a bugger to keep clean. Well that is if it is unsealed anyway. I have not been lucky enough to have sealed grout in my homes here in Florida. I do however plan on sealing mine after this cleaning;) There are companies that will come out and clean it for you, but there is a hefty price tag, upwards of $200 bucks is what a friend of mine paid. I have been a stay at home mom while finishing my degree and I don’t have money to spend on something I can easily do myself. I think of being a stay at home mom as my home and family is my job so if it takes a couple hours to do my grout then so be it. Not spending $200 dollars on having a professional do it like paying myself $200, well in my mind any way..LOL I cleaned my tile about 2 years ago and after I found the process that worked for me it went pretty easily. Well with the wonderful online access to many different blogs and such I had bookmarked some seemingly great ideas that I wanted to try this time. This is my floor as of Monday morning:

These are pictures in my kitchen. We use the garage door, which comes into the kitchen, most of the time to come in and out. It is just easier since I park my car in the garage and the kiddies park their bikes in there so it is just the most used entrance. Now even though I have mats outside the entrances and with 2 dogs I must vacuum quite a bit, the grout just gets nasty. I have tried mixing baking soda, ammonia and vinegar that I found here and letting it sit then giving it a scrub and this is the results I got:

The above photo shows that it did get quite a bit cleaned. I just cannot deal with a lot of scrubbing because of a surgery I had on my wrist, it gets very painful.

This is right in front of the door. It was still damp sorry about the picture. I think the mixture would work well in a less high traffic area for me and I am going to give it a go in another room to try it. I decided to go back to what I have used in the past. I copped a squat on the floor, turned the radio up and me and my secret ingredient got to work;) Here is my finished kitchen floor:

What did I use? Soft Scrub with bleach, a bucket of vinegar and water. I squirted a little bit of Soft Scrub on the grout, wet my grout brush and gave it a light scrub. Let it sit for a few minutes and went over with my scrub brush with a long handle, I wanted to scrub all my tile also. I then mopped up the residue and went over it with my Hoover Floor Mate filled with vinegar and water and this is what my grout looks like. Here are some before and afters next to each other:

My floor not only looks clean but over all the kitchen feels cleaner. I do have to say looking at the before and afters makes me feel yucky! I want to show some pictures of the last time I did this just to show some more shots of the results I have gained by this. I have a 3500 square foot 2 story home and I did my complete homes tiles like this in 2 days. This is the before, it was before I got into blogging and taking pictures of everything. These were taken with my Blackberry and these were taken in my kitchen nook:

Do you have any recipes for success with grout? Please share if you do! I am so wishing I would have sealed my grout back when I did it the first time! Also I was in Publix yesterday and Soft Scrub was on sale 2/$5.00 and I also saw they have it with baking soda! I may need to give that a try. Thank you so much for reading and visiting my blog. ~Angi

1 stick of unsalted butter, sofetened

2 eggs

1 cup of sugar OR 1/2 Splenda for baking

2 cups flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1-1/2 baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

2 bananas, mashed

1/3 cup milk

1 cup nuts (if desired)

Add butter, eggs and sugar to medium bowl and mix on low speed until combined.. I use a handheld mixer like this to make this recipe. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and milk. Mix until combined. Stir in bananas and nuts (if desired) until well combined. Pour into loaf pans. Now depending on your size of loaf pan you can use one pan. I have two pans that I fill half way and the following pictures show my results. If you do use one pan just don’t over fill it. Keep it to around 3/4′s full so it doesn’t end up all over your oven:)

Using two loaf pans your going to bake for about 30 minutes and check with a toothpick for doneness. If using a larger single loaf pan give it 45 minutes and check it, but it could take up to an hour.

I made 4 loaves today and 2 were without nuts and 2 were made with peanuts! This was my first time using peanuts, I usually use walnuts or pecans.

I am always willing to try something new. I have found many things online that I bookmark, pin or download. I have so many I have not tried as of yet that I have decided to create a series called Web Wednesday. I will try things, all sorts of things, anything from beauty to cleaning to recipes. For my debut post I am writing about, well my face. There are tons of diy beauty treatments on the web. I decided to try a diy exfoliating scrub, a steam and a scar, dark spot and black head remover. I have had trouble with my face breaking out since I was a teenager and blackheads are just the worst. I am a Jersey girl and spent my summers on the beach when I was younger. Back then I wasn’t so concerned with wrinkles, dark spots or the overall toll the sun can take on us. Well I am 40 now and have some acne scarring and dark spots. I am being brave and showing a picture of my bare face **yikes**:

Over the past few months I have seen quite a few faux mercury glass crafts. This is one from The Shabby Nest which I love. This is my first try at it, many of the tutorials I have seen spray the inside so of course I needed to try something different;) I sprayed with water on the outside and then sprayed with the looking glass spray paint. The following are some pictures I took of my process:

I washed the jars and wiped with alcohol prep pads to make sure I had a clean dry area…

I put the jars upside down on spray paint cans so there wouldn’t be any sticking to the newspaper…..

I wanted to add chalkboard tags to them when they were finished so I also got the stars ready to be painted. I sanded the rough edges and removed all stickers and sticky residue they leave behind….

My son was so super excited to get roller blades! This is my mother in law on the right. The doors on the hutch I had never really payed much attention to until I started redoing it and took them off and then a bulb went off! It looks like the right and left sides may have been backwards. The straight part is on top and the curved on the bottom, but in the middle the curve was on top. So I flipped them:) It is in two pieces so that made the whole process a lot easier. I primed and then painted in a antique white. I then distressed it and stained the top. I changed the hardware, but also decided to keep the decorative backing on the top doors. I painted them black to match all the other hardware. We had horrible very light carpet that I ripped out. I decided to do all the painting and staining in the whole room makeover before having the new floor installed.

With it being Teacher appreciation week, I thought I would share a easy and fun gift. I went to my local craft store a couple days before Valentines day and they had little buckets filled with treats made up as gifts. The only thing was they were $24.99!! Yikes! I knew I could put one together much cheaper. This past Valentines Day I made two bucket gifts, one for my honey and one for my 2nd graders teacher.

I made my honeys with cigars, Jack Daniels and Reese’s….a few of his favorite things:) I also found the box of chocolate cigars and had to include them:)

The nips were only about .99cents and the cigars varied, I bought one that was whiskey flavored, one that was coffee flavored and a couple for him to give a try.

My sons bucket for his teacher turned out so cute! I got a couple “gourmet” lollipops for about .39cents each and a cookie shaped like a cupcake.

I got the buckets for .99cents each and the flowers were also on sale for .99cents each. I took some floral foam I already had and cut it to fit inside the buckets and started filling with the flowers. I then hot glued the candy, nips and cigars onto lollipop sticks and arranged them. The lollie pops were just inserted and the cookie was attached to a lollie pop stick and voila and easy super cute gift:)

The seat covers were originally white….yeah not so good for a family with children…LOL I redid the covers with some cute fabric with stars on it back in 2007. I ripped out the horrible very light cream colored carpet that was very worn and had stains that just kept coming back, even after being cleaned. The tile has also been removed.

This is the finished product! I distressed the chairs and table legs. I let my husband pic out the fabric for the chair seats. He chose a leather like material so it would be easy to clean if something spills. He has a poker table top and wants to have the guys over for card night so the material choice will be perfect;) This room has been completely re-done and I have also refinished a hutch to match the table and chairs. I will do a post on that soon. I love how it has turned out. What do you think?

Thanks for for reading! ~Angi

I was featured on:

A few months ago my mother in law gave me her sewing box with all of its contents. It was full of old wooden spools, snaps, a TON of buttons and many other wonderful old sewing items. I love old spools of thread, the labels and the look are something I enjoy looking at. I wanted to display them but wasn’t sure how. I looked in stores and saw the “new” style thread holders that hang on the wall. Well they are a little pricey and just not what I was looking for. I then decided to store some in an old mason jar and that is how they stayed. Until now! I was just browsing through Goodwill and stumbled upon this beauty:
