Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced Monday, the hiring of Kyle McDonald as their High Performance Coach for the upcoming season.

Hurricanes General Manager Brad Robson calls this a step in the right direction especially with a young team. “This is the way for all teams including the NHL. Having an enhancement coach, like Kyle who knows what it takes in working with younger players, is a valuable tool in dealing with a young team. We believe Kyle’s experience in coaching at all levels will only help us as we continue to grow and develop in the future.”

McDonald has over a decade of experience in coaching hockey (and golf) at various levels of elite athletic competition. He’s created and implemented mental and skills programs for both players and coaches and owns a sport psychology consulting firm.

Tigers’ President, Lionel Ahier, announced today that Troy Ryan will take over the Tigers’ reins as Head Coach and General Manager. The appointment follows an extensive search that was conducted by Tiger administrators and executive.

“Mr. Ryan brings to our organization the history of winning that we plan to develop here.” said Ahier. “He has the wealth of experience as a coach, a manager and a scout, and has earned the kind of success that we are looking for. Whether it has been through instructing, organizing or promoting, Troy has found ways to develop, improve and support his teams.” Ahier said that the Tiger executive was impressed by Ryan’s experience, knowledge and commitment to building competitive programs. “What is most important to us here in Campbellton is his ability to improve programs by attracting, developing and keeping quality players.”

Ryan’s hockey resume is both extensive and impressive. As a player, he has competed in the MJAHL (now the MHL) with the Halifax Mooseheads as well with Saint Mary’s and UNB in the AUS. He has coached three MHL teams including the Pictou County Weeks Crushers, the Antigonish Bulldogs and the Metro Marauders. With the Marauders, he also served as president and general manager. On three occasions he has been named as MHL coach of the year. His hockey experience has been reinforced by his lengthy and varied involvement with Canada Games plus Junior A and Under-17 international competitions. At the university level, he served as assistant coach of the Acadia Axemen and most recently as head coach of the St. Thomas Tommies. Although this experience provided Ryan with a wealth of hockey smarts, he has also worked hard to obtain High Performance levels I and II coaching certification through the Canadian Coaching Certification program.

In a further comment about Ryan’s resume, Ahier summed up how the Tiger executive felt about Ryan’s decision to come to Campbellton. “Throw into the mix the fact that Troy has been formally recognized for community service as well as for volunteerism and it clearly shows that what we [the Tigers] and this community are getting is the complete package. We hope that everyone, especially our loyal Tiger fans, will join us in welcoming Mr. Ryan to our beautiful area.”
Silverbacks and the PIJHL's Aldergrove Kodiaks. The 17-year-old had one

"I'm really excited," said Simpson of joining the Birds. "They've got a
great coaching staff that's had success and a good ownership group.
Obviously they just won the BCHL title, and I grew up in White Rock, so
I'm looking forward to it."

The Sudbury Wolves are delighted to announce the signing of three highly-touted student-athletes. The Wolves’ 1st round selection, defenceman, KYLE CAPOBIANCO, along with the Wolves’ 2nd round draft selection, goaltender TROY TIMPANO as well as defenceman STEFAN LEBLANC, the Wolves’ 7th round selection from the 2012 OHL Priority Draft.

CAPOBIANCO is a skilled defenceman from Mississauga and was the second highest defenceman taken in the draft. The 6’, 155lb offensively-gifted blueliner played for the OHL CUP Champion Oakville Rangers minor midgets last season, where he notched seven goals and assisted on 24 more in 40 games, while collecting 38 penalty minutes.

“I'm really looking forward to the high competition level and the ability to play against top end players. The OHL is the top junior development league in the world and I am excited to be part of the experience,” says Kyle. “It’s a huge honour to be a part of such a great organization that is highly respected around the league. It’s the first step in taking a hockey career to the next level,” he added.

Wolves’ GM Blaine Smith adds, “Kyle is an outstanding defenceman. He is very skilled, an excellent play-maker, he has a very accurate shot and he is one of the best skaters in the draft. Kyle is a leader in every respect. He is mature beyond his years and has a wonderful family to support him in his hockey and schooling aspirations.”

TIMPANO is a highly regarded goaltender from Pickering, ON. The 6’, 175lb net minder posted a stellar 1.85 goals-against average and .930 save percentage with the Toronto Titans last season. TIMPANO was the first goalie selected in the 2013 draft.

“The Wolves showed that they believed in me and how I can play when they drafted me as the first goalie overall, and now that I’ve officially joined this great organization, I want to do everything I can to be a big part of the team and the city. I can’t wait to compete for a spot on the team,” stated Troy. “I’m just thrilled and excited, and it’s really a dream come true to get this opportunity. I didn’t know much about the Sudbury Wolves before the draft but now I feel really lucky that this is where I could get my start in the OHL.”

Wolves’ GM Blaine Smith was thrilled to select Troy as the first goaltender in the draft. “Our entire scouting staff led by Head Scout Andrew Shaw identified Troy as the top goaltender in the draft so we were thrilled to have selected him in the 2nd round of the OHL draft. It has been a while since the Sudbury Wolves have stepped-up and selected the first goaltender in the draft and we are very confident that Troy will develop into a top goaltender for the Sudbury Wolves.” Smith adds that Timpano was recently selected to participate in a OHL Goaltender’s Symposium and he made an outstanding impression with the OHL management in attendance.

STEFAN LEBLANC spent last season with the Oakville Blades Jr. A team where he scored four goals and added 29 assists in 49 games. The 5’11” defenceman developed excellent skills as an offensive quarterback as 19 of his points came with the man advantage.

“It is a tremendous honour to sign a contract with the Sudbury Wolves. Sudbury is a great hockey town and the history the organization has here in Sudbury is truly outstanding,” noted LeBlanc. “I'm looking forward to having a chance to play for a great organization in Sudbury, but simply playing here will not satisfy me. I want to make a contribution to the team and do my best to help the team win every night. I also look forward to developing my game to the next level.”

Wolves’ GM Blaine Smith adds, “Stefan had an outstanding season in Oakville last season and developed into one of the best offensive defencemen in the Ontario Provincial Junior League as a 16-year-old. Stefan is an outstanding skater, competes very hard and plays in all situations. He is very focused on his hockey career and his education and will be a terrific addition to the Sudbury Wolves line-up.”

Kyle, Troy and Stefan will look to make their first step of acquiring a roster spot with the Sudbury Wolves when the Wolves open Training Camp in August.

The Sudbury Wolves are proud to announce that they have reached an affiliation agreement with the SUDBURY NICKEL BARONS of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

In 2012, the team was purchased by a local businessman and former hockey player MIKE MOONEY who renamed the club as the Sudbury Nickel Barons. The change in ownership had a positive impact in reestablishing a working agreement with the local Jr. A team that had undergone a number of ownership, management and coaching changes over the past few years.

“Working with the Sudbury Wolves as their primary affiliate gives the Nickel Barons more credibility as a Jr. A hockey club,” stated Nickel Barons Owner Mike Mooney. “We are honoured and look forward to working with the Wolves to help develop locally drafted players and others take the next step in their hockey journey.”

A pair of local Sudbury Wolves draft picks suited up for the Nickel Barons last season including goaltender MICHAEL MUZYKA and forward DYLAN CALLAGHAN.

“The Sudbury Wolves are pleased to welcome the Sudbury Nickel Barons Jr. A team as our official affiliate team for the 2013-14 season” notes Wolves’ President and GM Blaine Smith. “Mike Mooney and his family have been big supporters of the Sudbury Wolves over the years and we look forward to working with GM Oscar Clouthier and Head Coach Trevor Blanchard – both of which are Sudbury Wolves alumni.
SAULT STE MARIE, ON –Soo Greyhounds General Manager Kyle Dubas announced this afternoon that the club has acquired OA forward PATRICK WATLING from the Guelph Storm, in exchange for Windsor’s 4th Round Selection in 2014.

"Patrick, coming from the Guelph Storm system of Mike Kelly and Scott Walker, understands very clearly the right way to play the game. He plays with speed and tenacity in pursuit of the puck at all times. Patrick is a positive possession player, when he's on the ice his team either has the puck or is working with speed to get it back” began Dubas.

Watling, a Sault Ste. Marie, ON product is set to enter his third full season in the OHL, coming off a career-best season in 2012-13 where he had 12 goals and 13 assists in 53 games played.
Locally, Patrick was a product of both the Bantam (Soo Thunder) and AAA Midget (Soo North Stars) programs.

"Patrick is a very versatile player and can play left wing or centre anywhere in the lineup and have success. Though he is an overage player, he is a late birthdate (born after September 15) who is just entering his 3rd season in the Ontario Hockey League. We feel that Patrick's ability to produce at even strength is a good indicator that he has some more offensive potential. Patrick is also a tremendous student who will fit in well with our academic program” explained the Hounds GM.

What drew Hounds Management to Watling was his proficiency at even strength, where he recorded 24 of his 25 points. Including all 12 of his goals. Watling recorded 12 goals in just 53 games, which projects out to 16 goals over a 68 game schedule.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League unveiled today the 2013-14 regular
season schedule, which features 612 games. Every one of the QMJHL’s 18
teams will take part in 68 games of which half will be played at home.
All teams will meet at least twice during the course of the season.

As
in years past, an important element of the QMJHL schedule remains the
number of games played during the weekend. “No fewer than 80% of the
games will be presented from Friday to Sunday, which will free up our
players to concentrate on their studies during the rest of the week,”
declared Commissioner, Gilles Courteau.

The opening game will be
held on Thursday, September 12, when the Halifax Mooseheads—2013
President Cup and MasterCard Memorial Cup champions —will host the
Moncton Wildcats.

The end of the season is scheduled for Saturday March 15, 2014 with a complete program of 9 games.

The
teams will be divided into three divisions, but the overall standings
will prevail to determine the 16 teams participating in the playoffs.

For the detailed schedule, please click here for the League-wide version.

2013-14 QMJHL Team Divisions

Telus West Division
Blainville-Boisbriand Armada
Drummondville Voltigeurs
Gatineau Olympiques
Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
Sherbrooke Phoenix
Val-d’Or Foreurs

Telus East Division
Baie-Comeau Drakkar
Chicoutimi Saguenéens
Québec Remparts
Rimouski Océanic
Shawinigan Cataractes
Victoriaville Tigres

Telus Maritimes Division
Acadie-Bathurst Titan
Cape Breton Screaming Eagles
Charlettetown Islanders
Halifax Mooseheads
Moncton Wildcats
Saint John Sea Dogs

“This is a tremendous opportunity for
our players and a big win for 67’s fans,” said 67’s Governor Jeff Hunt.
“Our partnership with Blyth Academy gives players a better opportunity
for success on and off the ice. They won’t miss classes, they’ll get
more sleep, have more energy and they’ll be more focused in class. I’m
extremely excited about our partnership with Blyth Academy.”

This is the second partnership between
an OHL franchise and Blyth Academy. The Barrie Colts attend their local
Blyth Academy and the team’s management and players provided glowing
reviews to the 67’s. “I am better able to fulfill my academic
aspirations by attending Blyth Academy,” said Colts forward and Grade 11
student Aaron Ekblad. “The educational resources in the classroom and
support from teachers are more than I would receive at any other school.
Blyth’s commitment to small class sizes and experiential learning has
greatly contributed to my social and academic development.”

Blyth Academy provides a flexible
school day, accommodating the 67’s schedule without compromising
academic success. Thanks to a close relationship between teaching staff
and coaches, Blyth Academy Ottawa is able to seamlessly accommodate
trades, transfers, and playoff schedules. Each player will take only two
credits per 10 week semester, allowing for better focus on each
subject, meaning less time on homework and more time on the ice.

“For elite athletes such as the Ottawa
67’s, the private education offered by Blyth Academy Ottawa provides an
unbeatable advantage, through high school and beyond" said Tim Putt,
Principal of Blyth Academy. “We are extremely excited to make Blyth
Academy Ottawa the official school of the Ottawa 67’s OHL hockey team.”
