It shows a profile of a figure with a hooked nose, a sly smile, and dark horns hidden among the clouds in the panel of the scene depicting the death of St Francis. The figure is difficult to see from the floor of the basilica but emerges clearly in close-up photography.

Sergio Fusetti, the chief restorer of the basilica, said Giotto probably never wanted the image of the devil to be a main part of the fresco and may have painted it in among the clouds "to have a bit of fun".

The master may have painted it to spite someone he knew by portraying him as a devil in the painting, Fusetti said on the convent's website.

The artwork in the basilica in the convent where St Francis is buried was last restored after it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1997. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best," Kardashian said in a statement.

Yes, Kardashian is quiet about it -- and she's about the only one! Everyone has an opinion on the couple's ill-fated marriage, even celebrities.

Ice T

You know Ice T would be all about the ice when he tweeted about the announcement.

"Wow! I just heard Kim Kardashian is getting a divorce after only 72 days of marriage???..... I bet she keeps that ring," he wrote, referring to her $2 million dollar engagement ring.

Andy Cohen

Bravo honcho Andy Cohen knows all about reality television drama, so it's no surprise he had to add his two cents about the divorce.

"Thanks for the entertainment, Kim Kardashian," he wrote. "Do they have to return the gifts???"

Kourtney Kardashian

Kourtney Kardashian tweeted love to her sister hours after the divorce was announced.

"Our sister is going through a difficult time but we're a close family and are sticking together like always," she wrote. "We appreciate everyone's kindness and support. @KimKardashian, we love you."

Khloe Kardashian

Khloe Kardashian -- on the other hand -- took to her typical Twitter preaching about how fans should act.

"Reading some these comments r so hurtful. Im grateful 4our fans who understand & r being respectful. Hate is disgusting. Love is everything," she wrote.

Mindy Kaling

"The Office" star Mindy Kaling asked a very valid question.

"This Kardashian thing is almost too much to comprehend. Was it all a dream, you guys" she asked.
Kathy Griffin

Kathy Griffin was more upset that Kardashian's quickie divorce made a joke of marriage while gay couples are still fighting to get the right.

"Ugh! gay couples like Kim K & Kris H ruining the sanctity of marriage is the problem w the radical homosexual agend--- oh wait, oops:)" she tweeted, turning it into a joke.

George Takei

Openly gay actor George Takei echoed Griffin's comments.

"Kim Kardashian files for divorce after 72 days. Another example of how same-sex marriage is destroying the sanctity of the very institution," he wrote.

Rob Delaney

Comedian Rob Delaney had the best answer to the day's news: he's suing Kardashian for putting us through the sham marriage.

"I wish to formally announce that I am suing Kim Kardashian to stop her divorce from Kris Humphries. I am also suing Ryan Seacrest, E! Entertainment Television, and Comcast for promoting their sham marriage, bilking advertisers, and polluting the airwaves of America and every other nation unfortunate enough to be subject to the disease of Kardashia," he wrote.

Here, here!

Rob Kardashian

Rob Kardashian addressed the news backstage Monday night at "Dancing With the Stars."

"My sister is obviously going through a lot and we're obviously very supportive of whatever decision she makes," Rob said.. "We're just here as her family just to be with her and be on her side for whatever."

Sheri Shepherd

"The View" host Sheri Shepherd got married about the same time as Kardashian and Humphries.

"I'm not going to judge Kim & Kris Kardashian... Lord knows I'm always praying I do my "second" chance the right way... marriage is work" she tweeted. "I've been married 77 days... Kim had been married 72 days... maybe Sal & I should've invited them over for dinner & Taboo & prayer."

Too bad it wouldn't have helped, Sheri.

Dina Manzo

Former "Real Housewives of New York" star Dina Manzo is more upset about the message Kardashian is sending young girls.

"Watching the news, I'm torn on this Kim thing, part of me feels bad for her & the mother in me is pissed. So many young girls look up to her," she wrote.

"Some of u r saying what a wise woman once told me. She was in love with the idea of love~I guess it's 'insert prince charming here' syndrome."

What do you think about Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' divorce?

Conan O'Brien Looks Back on His Big Year

Conan O'Brien Looks Back on His Big Year
This month will mark one year since Conan O'Brien moved his sofa, desk and bone-dry sidekick, Andy Richter, to TBS and launched Conan. He's back in New York this week to tape four shows at the Beacon Theater (Monday — Thursday, 11/10c, TBS). We celebrated his homecoming with a chat about the past, present and future of late night.

TV Guide Magazine: Do you miss New York?
Conan O'Brien: Oh, yeah. We just were back two weeks ago. I had a couple days off and I went back there with the crew, and we shot a bunch of things in and around the city, and it was just this blast of adrenaline, you know? It's like on ER, when they stick that needle into someone's heart to get it going again. It's a needle of adrenaline in your left ventricle. And the people were great. I mean, everywhere I went, people were leaning out of buses: "Conan!" You know, I think people were happy to see my weird orange head.

TV Guide Magazine: Do you ever think about bringing the show back to New York full time?
O'Brien: When I moved out to Los Angeles, and I took my wife and my kids here and we made this big commitment to this, it felt like my kids actually put down roots. They like it here. I spent 21 years walking, mining, shooting every single possible remote I could think of, in and around New York City. And it's really fun to go back for a couple of days. But L.A. is like shaking up the Etch A Sketch and starting again. It's giving me a chance to maybe try and reinvent some things.

TV Guide Magazine: When you were back in New York recently you appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. How emotional was it to return to the sixth floor at Rockefeller Center where you worked for more than 20 years?
O'Brien: I walked away from that building and came out to L.A., and we all know what happened next. I hadn't been back there since. I was thinking to myself, 'This is going to be strange.' But it was really nice to do it. It just wasn't the amount of time that I spent there, it was the intensity of it. You know when I first saw it, I was a writer at Saturday Night Live. My writing partner, Greg Daniels, and I would sneak into David Letterman's studio. And I would sit at his desk and write SNL sketches. Now it's Dr. Oz's studio and it's a completely different audience... They're talking about hysterectomies.

TV Guide Magazine: You've always talked about the legacy of late night television. But it feels like a very different environment since you left The Tonight Show. How do you size it up?
O'Brien: Late night has become more democratic. When I grew up, there was one person, Johnny Carson. The first revolution was when Dave went to CBS, because there wasn't just one late night network show at 11:30. But I think what's accelerating it now is there are just so many ways people experience television. If you're obsessed with the idea of being the guy or woman who everyone gathers around at night and watches, there is no such thing. There are so many different niche shows for different types of audiences and people experience it all different times and ways. We have a younger audience, so they watch our show on DVR. I have an assistant who doesn't even own a television and she's a huge television fan. She watches on her computer. And I now have so many people that come up to me and say, "Oh, I love that thing you did." Some of them saw it at 11 o'clock on TBS. But there are so many people who saw it on the Huffington Post or on YouTube.

TV Guide Magazine: Is there pressure to come up with bits that are going to run as clips on news shows or web sites?
O'Brien: I have people on my staff come to me and say, "Oh, this will be good, because this could go viral." And I actually try and discourage it. I say our job is no different than it was in 1993. And it's no different than what Johnny's job was. You're there for an hour, and you're trying to be as entertaining as you can. The really great moments — you can't force them, they come.

TV Guide Magazine: Comedy about the presidential campaign gets replayed a lot. But your show has younger viewers who tend not to watch a lot of news. Is it harder for you to do political humor?
O'Brien: Sometimes I feel like a lot of this ground is being covered by other people. There are whole shows — Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Bill Maher — that focus on it so much. We don't have as overtly a political show, and when we do stuff, we try and keep it sillier. So I don't go out of my way to try and think, "The editorial page in The Wall Street Journal is going to love this take on John Huntsman."

TV Guide Magazine: Have the parameters on what you can do changed at TBS? It's hard to imagine a couple of years ago on NBC that you could have a basketball mascot dressed as Anthony Wiener's underwear bulge.
O'Brien: That's a guy who's spent years training to be an actor. We said, "Congratulations. Now put on this underwear bulge outfit." You know, now that I'm on Turner, I'm allowed to swear. And you know what? I don't. I don't go out of my way to swear nearly as much as some other hosts.

TV Guide Magazine: What are late-night viewers getting from you that really can't get anywhere else?
O'Brien: I think there is a looseness that has evolved. I'm looser than I've ever been. You know, we built a nice little comedy lab room, and we have a very excited audience. Andy Richter and I can finish each other's sentences. The relationship I have with him is different from anything else on television. He never was a traditional sidekick. We've both been through the wars. We've both been through a lot. And so he will openly mock me in the monologue, if something isn't working. And we'll go at it. What you see when you tune in to our show is me, every night, figuring out what the hell it is. It's still evolving. It's still changing. I'm fascinated by the Internet side of my show, which is growing. It's going to sound like a joke, but it's possible that in 10 years the TV show will be a small unit that's attached to the giant octopus that is Team Coco (the show's Web site). It's a very strange thing that's happening.

TV Guide Magazine: The passion among your fans is deep. But do you ever think about how to broaden it out and get more people to sample what you're doing?
O'Brien: TBS is in the process of developing original programming and building up. They've been terrifically supportive. We always knew, "Okay, we're signing up with these guys for the long haul, and this is going to have to evolve." Also, I've always had a Field of Dreams philosophy: If you build it, they will come. If you keep putting out funny stuff, we have a culture now where it can get batted around and where people are working out in the gym and they show something funny on one of the news outlets.

TV Guide Magazine: Do the TBS people tell you not to worry about conventional day-to-day ratings?
O'Brien: Yeah. We always knew we're going to get the time and they're in the process of re-branding. They just added The Big Bang Theory to their primetime, which leads into us. And we're going to all work together and build this thing. That's the nice thing about being with these guys. They watch every single show. And they call me up, and they love the show. And they love what we're doing. We all have a clear vision of what it is we want to do here.

TV Guide Magazine: Has anyone suggested producing a version of the show that could air in broadcast syndication or other outlets?
O'Brien: There's been talk about us doing a best-of show. You know, they leave me out of those talks because I always just want to do live shows. I'm constantly just trying to get back to vaudeville. And they're like, "No, no, no. That's not what we want. Settle down, kid." I just want to put on makeup and go tap dance.

TV Guide Magazine: What happens if Turner comes to you with a contract extension?
O'Brien: I'd be fine with that. I love these guys. I have upcoming talks with Telemundo. We're going to have tapas, and we're going to talk about some stuff. That might be my only caveat with TBS.

Tsunami Debris Floating Fast Towards Hawaii

Tsunami Debris Floating Fast Towards Hawaii
Millions of tons of debris washed out to sea by the tsunami that ravaged Japan in March is making its way across the Pacific faster than expected.

Computer models originally estimated the first of the debris wouldn't reach Midway Island until spring of 2012, but a training ship, the STS Pallada, encountered tsunami debris near Midway in September.

“They saw some pieces of furniture, some appliances, anything that can float, and they picked up a fishing boat,” said Jan Hafner, computer programmer at the International Pacific Research Center (IPRC) in Hawaii, on KITV.com, a Hawaiian news outlet.

The 20-foot fishing boat had "Fukushima" written on it, making it the first confirmed report of tsunami debris, said Hafner.

Hafner assisted Nikolai Maximenko, head researcher of the IPRC, to design the computer models. He explained why the debris was arriving ahead of schedule to Discovery News.

“Different objects are moving at different speeds. Lighter objects are positioned higher in the water and are more influenced by wind,” Hafner told Discovery News. “Our model is more suitable for heavy objects.”

A chunk of Styrofoam sits so high above the water it acts as a sail and is whisked along by the wind, whereas a piece of wooden furniture is only moved by the ocean currents.

The new estimate is that lighter objects like Styrofoam will surf onto Midway's beaches this coming winter. Japanese debris won't hit Hawaii until early 2013, a few months earlier than expected. The West Coast still probably won't see debris until approximately five years after the tsunami originally struck.

No matter when it washes up, the tons of debris endanger marine life and maybe even humans.

In particular, fishing nets and gear, as well as other large debris, could entangle Hawaiian monk seals and wrap around coral, said Carey Morishige, Pacific Islands regional coordinator of the NOAA Marine Debris Program, in an email interview with Discovery News.

“We do believe that radioactivity of this debris is highly unlikely. Whether that debris will contain hazmat or other chemicals that could pose a health risk -- we really don't know,” said Morishige. “We don't have a good understanding or knowledge of what's still out there (types and quantities), still afloat in the N. Pacific from the Japan tsunami.”

In order to keep tabs on the tsunami debris, both Morishige and Hafner ask that anyone sailing in the Western Pacific keep an eye out and report debris to NOAA at MDsightings@gmail.com and to the IPRC at jhafner@hawaii.edu.

Anything you find might end up in a museum someday. Hafner has heard people calling to collect items from the debris to create a memorial museum.

Or you can be like Hafner and try to return the lost items to their owners. The boat with “Fukushima” written on it was turned in to Japanese authorities. But other reports from the scene say the fighters are still involved in fighting. The BBC's Caroline Hawley says there has not yet been any confirmation from the new Libyan government about these reports.

Anti-Gaddafi forces 'seize Sirte'

Anti-Gaddafi forces 'seize Sirte'
Libya's transitional government forces have taken full control of Sirte, the last city where Gaddafi loyalists had remained holed up, fighters and reporters say.

Soldiers hoisted the new NTC national flag on buildings in the centre of Col Muammar Gaddafi's hometown.

Unconfirmed reports quote officials as saying Col Gaddafi was captured there.

His supporters are still resisting government forces in the town of Bani Walid, south-east of Tripoli.

The BBC's Gabriel Gatehouse on the outskirts of Sirte - about 360km (220 miles) east of the capital - says he cannot confirm that the town has fallen.

Troops at roadblocks set up around the town say their purpose is to prevent a mass break out by pro-Gaddafi forces.

Officials in Tripoli sent mixed messages about the situation. A military spokesman said Sirte had been "almost liberated".

But Abdel Hakim Belhaj, the military commander of the National Transitional Council (NTC) in the capital, said: "We, thank God, announced that [Sirte] has been liberated."

There are reports that senior figures in Col Gaddafi's former regime have been captured or killed.

The fall of Sirte, if confirmed, represents a very significant moment in the overthrow of Col Gaddafi.

The NTC has said that this would be the point at which it would declare Libya liberated. The transitional authorities have said a new government would then be formed within a month, and the current administration would resign.

Celebrations

The head of government operations in the eastern half of the city told Reuters news agency on Thursday: "Sirte has been liberated."

"There are no Gaddafi forces any more," Col Yunus al-Abdali added. "We are now chasing his fighters who are trying to run away."

At least 16 pro-Gaddafi fighters were captured, along with ammunition and trucks loaded with weapons, the Associated Press reported.

NTC fighters celebrated by firing in the air, and chanting "Allah akbar" ("God is great"), AP reported.

The NTC had been facing heavy resistance from snipers in the city, and used heavy artillery during its offensive. Thousands of civilians have fled.

Government forces have also suffered heavy casualties in Bani Walid in recent weeks.

On Monday the NTC said it had captured 90% of the town, including the centre.

Col Gaddafi, who ruled Libya for 42 years, was ousted in August, when rebel forces captured Tripoli.

His whereabouts remain unknown. Several of his family member are in hiding or have fled the country.

Muammar Gddafi Libiyan President Captured By Fighters Muammar Gddafi.

Al Jazeera Breaking News.
National Transitional Council tells al jazeera "Gaddafi Family mebmers will receive fair trails".Head of gaddafi's Armed Forces Abu bakar Has been killed. High School.

As WSYR-TV in Syracuse reported, Barden collapsed on the field following a hard hit from an opposing player. After laying face down following the play, trainers rushed to his side and were able to get Barden to sit up. While he was coherent at the time, the 230-pound junior complained of a headache and then fell over when he tried to stand up.

That's when officials knew something was seriously wrong. Barden was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead soon after. While the autopsy report hasn't been officially released, WSYR-TV obtained a copy of the report and noted that Barden had died from a hit during the game -- presumably the one he took prior to being rushed to the hospital.

According to police, autopsy results show Barden died of bleeding in the brain, due to blunt force trauma as the result of a football injury.

"It still is shocking. He's with us and he's gone," Barden mother, Jacqueline, told WSYR-TV.

Barden's family was in disbelief following the news of their son's death, but even in the family's darkest hour, Barden's mother wanted the football players at Homer to know the injury wasn't their fault.

"He just would not want those people to think that it was their fault. It was just an accident," Jacqueline Barden told WSYR-TV. "Everything that Ridge did, he did with full gust. I'd say just take that attitude with you."

Barden's death once again brings up a major issue regarding the safety of youth football. Plenty has been done over the years to make sure head injuries, such as Barden's, never happen again. But even the newest helmet technology and concussion regulations can't keep the sport from the vicious hits that occur on football fields across the country on a weekly basis.

To add emphasis to that point, two other football players were also hospitalized with head-related injuries on Thursday alone. In Texas, a North Mesquite (Texas) High junior varsity player was sent to the hospital following a scary collision which may have involved in a pinched nerve in his neck, according to the Dallas Morning News. More worryingly, the Los Angeles Times reported that a Los Angeles (Calif.) High junior varsity player underwent brain surgery to relieve hemorrhaging after he collapsed on the sideline during his team's Thursday night game.

The state of New York enacted a Concussion Management Awareness Act earlier this year in an effort to make sure players don't take the field following a head injury. But Barden's death was sudden; nobody had an idea how serious the injury really was until he tried to stand up and collapsed.

Naturally, that makes his death all the more tragic and hard to comprehend.

Buffett Rule could hit 25% of millionaires

Buffett Rule could hit 25% of millionaires
A quarter of millionaires don't pay enough in federal taxes to satisfy the Buffett Rule, according to a new study from the Congressional Research Service.

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has made a big deal of how much less many ultra-rich pay in federal taxes as a percent of their income than the middle class. So much of a big deal, in fact, that President Obama proposed the Buffett Rule.

The Buffett Rule is a guiding principle for tax reform to ensure that millionaires pay a higher percentage of their income in federal taxes than those who make less.

The CRS found that 94,500 millionaires pay an effective federal tax rate that is less than that paid by 10.4 million moderate-income taxpayers.

That is, 25% of those with adjusted gross incomes over $1 million pay a smaller portion of their income in federal taxes -- income, payroll and corporate -- than 10% of those with AGIs below $100,000.

There are two key reasons why a millionaire or billionaire may end up paying a lower percentage of his income than the average American: A lot of his money may come from investments, which are taxed at a lower rate than wages, and he may not pay very much in payroll taxes since they are only assessed on wage income, which could be a small share of his total income.

The CRS report also analyzed arguments that critics of the Buffett Rule make.

Critics of higher taxes, for instance, often assert that small businesses are the source of the greatest job creation, and so raising rates on small business owners would be bad for the economy.

The report notes, however, that recent studies have found that "small businesses contribute only slightly more jobs than larger businesses relative to their employment share." And that difference is attributable to hiring by startups, which also end up destroying about 40% of the new jobs they create within five years when the businesses flame out.

Furthermore, the CRS report said, "most small business owners of startup firms are not in the top income categories and would not be affected by tax policies that observe the Buffett Rule."

More broadly, the report noted that only about 1% of all federal tax returns that report business income have AGIs over $1 million. And of those, only a quarter appear to pay tax rates that would violate the Buffett Rule.

Buffett Rule: Not so simple

"[That] suggests that tax reform policies designed to ensure adherence to the Buffett Rule will affect few small businesses," the CRS report said.

The debate over how much to tax millionaires and billionaires is far from over, as Congress faces the prospect of having to reduce deficits by trillions of dollars in the coming years.

Buffett this week tried to advance his campaign to get lawmakers to "stop coddling" the super-rich as they contemplate the sacrifices Americans should make in the quest to put the country on a more sustainable path.

In a letter to Republican Rep. Tim Huelskamp Tuesday, Buffett revealed new details about his income and tax burden, and reiterated his promise to release his federal tax return if his ultra-rich peers did the same.

K’naan’s journey home Songs Free Download.

K’naan’s journey home
Hip-hop artist K'naan revealed how an emotional and heart-rending visit to his homeland of Somalia this year intensified his desire to devote his music to social good.

The 33-year-old creator of the hit song "Wavin' Flag," which became an international sensation as the theme of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, boarded the last commercial flight out of Somalia 20 years ago before civil war ravaged his nation and sparked a humanitarian crisis.

Already firmly entrenched as a socially conscious artist, witnessing the impact of catastrophic famine on his stricken fellow countrymen during his recent visit prompted him to redouble his efforts to affect positive change.

"It is a good moment to be in service of people," K'naan said. "I don't really know what other life to lead than one which is in service of others."

[ Photos: More images of K'naan ]

While in Somalia, K'naan met and spoke with sufferers of disease and malnutrition at one of the makeshift camps set up in the capital, Mogadishu. Once one of the most picturesque cities in Africa, the city is now a tragic, crumbling reminder of two decades of conflict. He also visited the hospital where both he and supermodel Iman were born, now in a dilapidated state and drastically under-resourced.

"The worst famine in decades pillages the flesh of the already wounded in Somalia," K'naan wrote in an article for the New York Times. "And the world's collective humanitarian response has been a defeated shrug. If ever there was a best and worst time to return home, it was now."

K'naan attempts to raise awareness of Somalia's plight will continue on Saturday, as he performs as one of the headline acts of "A Decade of Difference" concert, celebrating President Bill Clinton's charitable efforts.

The artist is already a friend of President Clinton's, having performed at the closing ceremony of the Clinton Global Initiative last month. Following K'naan's performance, Clinton made an impromptu visit to the stage to congratulate him on his performance and to raise awareness of the difficulties still raging in Somalia.

"My country fell out of the pocket of life," K'naan said.

Somalia's weak United Nations-backed government is under threat from Islamic insurgents including the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militant group, which refuses to allow aid organizations to enter the southern areas of the country that it controls.

As Somalia's problems raged throughout the past two decades, the memories of life in Mogadishu continued to affect K'naan, even after members of his family had moved to Canada. He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder believed to be related to incidents from his childhood, including surviving a machine gun attack that killed three of his friends.

After arriving in Canada, he taught himself English largely from hip-hop music and television. Despite admitting that he sometimes spent months at a time as a social recluse in his bedroom, music gradually became his escape route towards a normal life.

"My mother was suspicious of Western medicine so she didn't want me to get treatment for the stress disorder," K'naan told Yahoo! Sports at the World Cup. "My way out of it was through music. By writing and singing about my experiences I could come to terms with it."

Critical acclaim began to filter in following his 2005 album "The Dusty Foot Philosopher," but it was "Troubadour" (released in 2009 and recorded at Bob Marley's old house in Jamaica) which established him as an international star and gave him the platform to exercise the kind of charitable influence he wished for.

"A Decade of Difference," featuring K'naan, Lady Gaga, Usher, Bono, and The Edge, plus several other leading artists, will be broadcast on October 15 starting at 7pm PT, live and exclusively on Yahoo!.

Fast and Furious Scandal – Eric Holder Takes the Hot Seat

Fast and Furious Scandal – Eric Holder Takes the Hot Seat
Fast and Furious Scandal, otherwise known as the botched gun-trafficking operation, may be attributed to Attorney General Eric Holder.

Congressional investigators are sending a subpoena to Holder in an effort to determine if the Attorney General misled the Congress about the “Fast and Furious” operation.

The subpoena will specifically demand information about the investigation into the shooting death of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, as well as, possibly, correspondence between Justice Department officials and the White House, and information shared by Mexican Justice officials.

House oversight committee chairman Darrell Issa suggested on “Fox News Sunday” that Attorney General Eric Holder knew about the gun trafficking operation known as “Fast and Furious” earlier than he has acknowledged.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in 2009 allowed intermediaries for drug cartels to buy thousands of weapons from Arizona gun shops and lost track of about 1,400 of the 2,000 of those guns. It was one of more than 30 events on the conference’s first day, which continues through Friday.

Although “the aftershocks keep on coming,” said Tim Jones, chief executive of ZenithOptimedia, part of the Publicis Groupe, worldwide ad spending will grow this year compared with last year, next year compared with this year and in 2013 compared with 2012.

There were caveats, among them some downward revisions in Mr. Jones’s most recent estimates to reflect concerns about European debt. He also expressed concern about what he called the “somewhat anemic” growth rate of the American economy.

And “if we’re not in a recession,” Mr. Jones warned, “we may talk ourselves back into a recession.”

Even so, a big reason for growth next year, Mr. Jones said, is the so-called quadrennial effect, as media reap the benefit of selling commercial time and ad space for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games and, in the United States, for the 2012 elections.

“Frankly, the quadrennial effect couldn’t come at a better time,” Mr. Jones said. “The political spending and the Olympics will help.”

Another panelist, Russ Sapienza, senior partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, offered another reason for the growth forecast.

“From the advertisers’ perspective, they don’t want to take the money off the table right now,” Mr. Sapienza said. “They want to sell products.” In other words, when growth strategies like building factories seem to be too much of a gamble, increasing ad budgets can appear less risky.

Mr. Sapienza’s assessment was echoed by a third panelist, Robert D. Liodice, president and chief executive of the Association of National Advertisers.

“We are seeing some modest G.D.P. growth,” Mr. Liodice said, “albeit at a somewhat more modest rate than we’re used to.” That should signal continued growth in ad spending, he added.

“Right now, we’re not seeing a Lehman Brothers moment,” Mr. Liodice said, but there could be “a very rapid back-pedaling” in plans to increase ad budgets if problems in Europe worsen.

One important issue that marketers face as they decide ad budgets is where to run ads, particularly as the consumer love affair with digital and social media grows more ardent. The forecast panel addressed that, as did Randall Rothenberg, president and chief executive of the Interactive Advertising Bureau. He spoke during the opening of the seventh annual I.A.B. Mixx conference, which is taking place during Advertising Week.

Mr. Rothenberg, joking that he could be fired for such remarks, told a packed auditorium that technology was “absolutely irrelevant to the future of digital marketing and advertising” because the future lay not in the development of new ad units but rather in content — “what you put inside those media spaces and time slots.”

Mr. Rothenberg cited a growing number of technology companies, among them AOL, Facebook, Google and Yahoo, that are creating their own content or teaming up with others to do so.

“The story,” Mr. Rothenberg said, “is the story.”

Following Mr. Rothenberg was Jonathan Mildenhall, vice president for global advertising strategy and content excellence at the Coca-Cola Company, who spoke of plans to double business in the next decade.

One way to achieve that, Mr. Mildenhall said, is to come up with marketing ideas that are “so compelling they take on a life of their own.” Another way, he said, is to cultivate direct relationships with technology partners and then collect, and use, customer data efficiently.

“Data whisperers will become our new messiahs,” Mr. Mildenhall said.

Another session on Monday that addressed changing media choices featured Robert W. Pittman, who was chairman for media and entertainment platforms at Clear Channel Communications when he was added to the schedule for Advertising Week 2011. On Sunday, he was promoted by Clear Channel to chief executive and executive chairman.

“I try to say it’s the Advertising Week bump,” said Matt Scheckner, executive director of Advertising Week 2011, who introduced Mr. Pittman. He quickly added, laughing, “I don’t think that’s true.”

Mr. Pittman devoted much of his talk to describe Clear Channel’s warm embrace of new media. The company is known for selling advertisers commercial time on radio stations and ad space on billboards. Among the company’s new ventures are iHeartRadio, an online radio service that is linked to Facebook, and Thumbplay, a digital music subscription service.

“We should take advantage of change,” Mr. Pittman said. “We should be wherever we can with the products and services people expect.”

“I’m an old-fashioned guy,” he added. “I believe if you have a great relationship with the consumer, you’ll have an opportunity to make money from it.”

For instance, Mr. Pittman said, “we put the Univision stations” — which broadcast in Spanish — “on iHeartRadio. We don’t own them, but we’re thinking, ‘How do you really serve the consumer?’ ”

But media companies that pioneer with “new stuff” should not expect sponsors, he said, because not every marketer takes chances.

He added: “Part of your challenge is to find those marketers that’ll be your steadies. You go steady with them.”

How to woo them? Take them, perhaps, on a date to an Advertising Week panel.

Portishead aimed to move away from earlier 'fondue music' sound, experiment with 'trip-hop' sound

Portishead aimed to move away from earlier 'fondue music' sound, experiment with 'trip-hop' sound

It's not every band that, in middle age, comes up with music more alarming and strange than they managed in their youth.

But for Portishead, no other option would do.

"We were trying to break out of the perception of our past," says the band's Geoff Barrow. "Our earlier albums got perceived as 'fondue music.' Which was really weird."

In fact, Barrow says the inversion of the band's more bitter intent caused him to jettison Portishead for what turned out to be more than a decade. After releasing two studio albums and a live album in the '90s, this seminal Bristol trip-hop trio went on a "hiatus" that didn't end until 2008's logically titled "Third" CD.

It easily trumped the edginess of their earlier works, going for something even more haunted and scarred.

In the years since, the group has resumed touring, leading to its first string of U.S. shows in 14 years. Saturday and Sunday, Portishead will headline the annual All Tomorrow's Parties festival, held this year in Asbury Park. They also served as the event's curators, hiring Public Enemy, Swans, Deerhoof, Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog and the Horrors. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday, Portishead plays its own dates at Hammerstein Ballroom.

When they first appeared on 1994's "Dummy," Portishead presented an unflinching mix of dub bass lines, drawn-out hip-hop beats and a Gobi desert's worth of air left around the instruments. In that sense, it echoed the style of Massive Attack and Tricky, who were each just emerging from Bristol in the United Kingdom.

While their style struck the outside world as revolutionary, Barrow says locals found it routine.

"Everyone there had been experimenting with dub and hip-hop," he says.

The style earned the media tag "trip-hop," which irked everyone corralled under its banner.

"That was made up by London people," Barrow says. "It would be as if someone in Denver came up with a name for a New York style."

Of all the groups so categorized, Portishead got the most U.S. airplay, aided by the gorgeously wan vocals of Beth Gibbons. She added a slow-moving beauty to the sound, which enticed lounge and chillout fans who ignored the claustrophobia and sense of implosion below.

For all the frustration that caused, Barrow recognizes one area of advantage: "My banker thanks you," he says.

In 1997, the group released a live album, recorded at Roseland, though Barrow says "the sound is pretty awful."

He's much happier with the sounds he's getting now. "Third" features horror-movie vocals, creepy-crawly soundscapes and beats that seem like they were produced by instruments of torture. He admits to a horror-movie influence, drawn from things like John Carpenter's soundtrack for "Assault on Precinct 13."

The approach revitalized the band. It also made the often self-deprecating Barrow excited to both tour again and to participate in ATP.

While Barrow says he likes the band's latest CD more "in theory" than in practice, he feels it finds its truest voice in concert.

"The music has more space in it," he says. "The wideness of it live is what it should be. It's that much more extreme."

Conference realignment: Big 12, Big East begin to pick up pieces

Conference realignment: Big 12, Big East begin to pick up pieces
Turned away by the Pac-12, the Big 12’s most powerful members are trying to find ways to live together again after weeks of hurtling toward a break up.

Texas President William Powers declared Wednesday that the Longhorns — who receive more media money than other members of the Big 12 — are open to a new revenue-sharing model and have already suggested that top-level television and cable money be shared equally.

What’s not on the table is the money from Texas’ 20-year, $300 million deal with ESPN to create the Longhorn Network, which has been blamed in large part for Texas A&M’s pending departure from the Big 12.

“That’s never been in play, that’s not in play,” Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said.

So with that line drawn in the sand, the Big 12 leadership has scheduled a key meeting Thursday, Oklahoma President David Boren said.

“The most important goal for the University of Oklahoma is conference stability,” he said. “We intend to support actions that will strengthen and stabilize the conference at the very important meeting of the conference board.”

The Pac-12 late Tuesday squashed any hope of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech heading west in what surely would have been a death blow to the Big 12.

But the conference realignment wheels are still turning, especially with the Aggies planning to join the Southeastern Conference as soon as legal threats are out of the way.

“Certainly the position of Oklahoma State and I think most of the schools, if not all, is that we want to add a 10th team,” said Oklahoma State President Burns Hargis, a member of the league’s expansion committee. He listed TCU, Houston, SMU, BYU, Utah and Air Force among the potential expansion targets before saying “we’ve talked about a lot of ideas.”

The Big East, left with only six football members after Pitt and Syracuse announced plans to join the ACC, must also find a new way forward while the Mountain West and Conference USA are in discussions about a partnership.

The talk of saving the Big 12 centers on sharing television revenue equally — a core principle of the Big Ten and Pac-12. The Big 12 splits the revenue from its $1.2 billion Fox Sports contract evenly, but only half of the money from its top-tier deal with ABC goes into equal shares. The rest is weighted toward the programs that play on the network more frequently, such as Texas and Oklahoma.

Dodds said Big 12 athletic directors more than a month ago approved Texas’ suggestion to equally share to network revenue around the league. He said the plan has not been voted on by league presidents.

Texas Tech President Guy Bailey said he doesn’t anticipate much opposition to that idea. “I would be surprised if there weren’t a change in that, in some way,” he said. Now, how exactly it plays out, I don’t know.“

Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe has not commented on the turmoil surrounding the league and there is speculation about his future. The Kansas City Star, citing two sources with knowledge of the decision, reported Wednesday night that Beebe was working on an agreement to leave his position and that an announcement of Beebe’s departure was expected Thursday.

Beebe’s contract was extended in November through June 2015, a decision made after Nebraska and Colorado announced they were leaving the Big 12 and before the 13-year deal was reached with Fox Sports in April.

Dodds declined comment, and Bailey and Hargis called Beebe’s status a private ”personnel“ matter.

Besides Thursday’s meeting of the Big 12 conference board, a summit also is possible between Texas and Oklahoma officials. Big 12 athletic directors also have a previously scheduled meeting in Dallas next week.

ESPN distanced itself from the conference affiliation uproar, saying the ”driving force on realignment lies with the conferences and universities.“

Still, the Longhorn Network created uncertainty in the Big 12 and Texas A&M said it was a big reason why the Aggies will leave the Big 12 by July — a decision that stands, the school said Wednesday.

Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne earlier this month said the Big 12’s revenue-sharing plan lends itself to instability. The Huskers is in its first season as a member of the Big Ten, where each school received $22.6 million this year — about twice as much as Nebraska could have expected if it had stayed in the Big 12.

Texas’ Powers said revenue sharing will be subject to discussion in coming days.

”A lot of these issues that you hear (about) whether it’s revenue sharing or whatever, we’ve been working on long before,“ he said. ”We will continue to work on those. I’m not going to prejudge on how those will come out. There are not any preconditions for the conference coming back together.

“We want a stable, workable conference going forward,” Powers said.

Once the Aggies leave, the Big 12 will have nine members unless a replacement — or replacements — are found. Only SMU has gone public with its interest in joining the Big 12.

“It’s about quality, not quantity,” Dodds said. “In my mind, 10 is the perfect conference. You have a clear path to the national championship game without stumbling in a (conference) championship game.”

There was still activity around the Big 12 on Wednesday. Oklahoma State’s regents gave school President Hargis the power to depart the Big 12 if necessary while regents in Kansas reiterated their support for staying in the Big 12. Regents in Missouri are scheduled to meet Thursday.

Hargis said the decision to give him authority over a league change was important even after the Pac-12 was taken off the table as a potential destination because “there are a lot of moving parts here and we may have to make decisions fast.” He said his first priority is stabilizing the Big 12.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback said he was optimistic that the Big 12 would remain intact, stabilize and add members.

Elsewhere, former Big Eight Commissioner Chuck Neinas, a high-profile consultant for sports leagues and coaches, said he has been working on a partnership with the Mountain West and Conference USA in which they would merge as football playing programs into east and west divisions, spanning four time zones.

East Carolina of Conference USA announced Wednesday that it has applied for membership in the Big East, where members are trying to rebuild after Syracuse and Pittsburgh accepted invitations to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Navy and Air Force are the top choices as football-only members, according to a person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the conference does not want to publicly disclose its plans.

Big East Commissioner John Marinatto said Syracuse and Pittsburgh won’t be allowed to leave until the 2014-15 academic year and he expects TCU to join in 2012 as agreed.

Titanic necklace stolen from Danish amusement park

Titanic necklace stolen from Danish amusement park
Titanic necklace: Worn by a survivor of the great ship's sinking in 1912, it was housed in an amusement park near the Danish capital. The Titanic necklace was discovered missing last weekend.

This undated photo, made available Sept. 19, shows the gold-plated necklace which was recovered from the wreckage of the Titanic. It has been stolen from a display at Copenhagen's Tivoli amusement park. The necklace was owned by first class passenger Eleanor Wildener of Philadelphia who survived the Titanic sinking, and is valued at about $19,300.

Download Seat Plan : Officer Post Exam Agrani Bank Ltd.

Download The Seat Plan of Agrani Bank Office Post. They are working to create stem cell lines from zoo animals, for use in treating animal diabetes and other ailments as well as helping the animals reproduce.

The scientists have already created a "frozen zoo," which contains different types of cells from every animal there, and now they are putting together a "stem cell zoo."

"There are only two animals in it," study researcher Inbar Friedrich Ben-Nun, of The Scripps Research Institute, said in a statement, "but we have the start of a new zoo, the stem cell zoo."

Stem cells are prized, because they can be turned into any type of cell in the body, a characteristic called pluripotency. The cells can even be turned into sperm or egg cells, and used in assisted reproduction to make more individuals of the species.

"The most important thing is to provide these stem cells as a resource for other people taking some of the next steps," said Jeanne Loring, also of The Scripps Research Institute.

Endangered stem cells

The researchers started with two species: the drill primate, a highly endangered primate genetically close to humans, and the northern white rhinoceros, which is genetically far from humans and also incredibly endangered.

To create the stem cells, the researchers used the same genes that are used to turn human cells pluripotent; they inserted those genes into the animals' skin cells. They had originally tried to use genes from the animals themselves and their close relatives, but after more than a year of trying they were having little success.

The new technique isn't very efficient yet, transforming just a few cells into stem cells at a time, but that's enough, the researchers said.

Stem cell therapies

Both animals, the researchers said, were chosen because they could benefit from stem cells now. For instance, the drill primate suffers from diabetes when in captivity, and stem cell-based treatments for diabetes being researched in humans suggest the same may work in these primates.

The rhinoceros was chosen because it is one of the most highly endangered species on the planet, with only seven animals, all in captivity, in existence (two of which are in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park). They haven't reproduced in several years, and because the population is so small there is a lack of genetic diversity, which could affect their survival.

If the researchers can use the stem cells to make sperm and eggs from skin cells of deceased animals in the frozen zoo, they could reintroduce some genetic diversity into the population, while also increasing its size.

"The best way to manage extinctions is to preserve species and their habitats," study researcher Oliver Ryder, of the San Diego Zoo, said in a statement. "But that's not working all the time."

The rhinos are a perfect example, he said, because there are so few. "Stem cell technology provides some level of hope that they won't have to become extinct even though they've been completely eliminated from their habitats."

The study was published today (Sept. 4) in the journal Nature Methods.
