McLaren might switch to BMW, Red Bull and Williams to Cosworth

McLaren are rumoured to switch to BMW engines next year.

Formula One teams Red Bull and Williams may use Cosworth engines next year, and McLaren are rumoured to switch from Mercedes to BMW power.

Williams announced a couple of weeks ago that they were terminating their deal with Toyota early due to dissatisfaction with the performance of the Japanese engine package. While the independent British team had reportedly been negotiating with Renault, inside information now indicates that Williams will take advantage of the new Cosworth package for next season instead, autoblog.com reports.

And Red Bull could end up with the Cosworth package as well. The team have revealed that they are considering staying with Renault or alternatively switching to either Mercedes, Toyota or Cosworth. Unsatisfied with the Renault package and with McLaren reportedly vetoing Red Bull’s tie-in with Mercedes, it’s now apparently down to Toyota and Cosworth. Insiders point out that with the ban on engine development still in place for the returning manufacturers, Cosworth is the only provider capable of developing a new engine.

Earlier in October, rumours emerged that McLaren could end their co-operation with Mercedes and acquire BMW’s engine operations. With BMW withdrawing from Formula One at the end of this season, the hot rumour is that McLaren chairman Ron Dennis is considering scooping up rival BMW F1’s engine-building operations. Mercedes supply engines to the this year’s champions, Brawn GP, and a split with McLaren would allow MB to concentrate their efforts there.

The four newcomers next year – Manor, Campos, Lotus and USF1 are all going to use Cosworth engines. Ferrari, Renault and Toyota will continue building their own. Brawn GP and Force India are expected to continue with Mercedes. Toro Rosso haven’t yet confirmed if they are to continue with Ferrari engines.

The current BMW X3 will have to soldier on for just over a year more until the arrival of an all-new model, previewed here in this computer-generated rendering.

Recent spy shots of BMW's next-generation X3 prototype indicate the company may be moving the crossover's development forward to match the competition. With the release of the newer Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK, BMW will almost certainly be a little a worried about losing its leadership position.

The rendering shows a car with completely finished headlights and tail lights, slightly expanded dimensions for added interior space and styling borrowed from the recently revealed X1 compact SUV.

In addition to the revamped exterior, a full array of gadgets and features are expected to be available for the X3 to help keep its edge against Audi and Mercedes-Benz. It’s even possible that BMW could make the night-vision heads-up display currently found in the X6 and other models available on the X3. Bi-xenon headlights with around-corner capability and new seats that feature massage functions and ventilation are also expected for the new model.

Engines will remain largely the same, with a choice of four diesels ranging from 177 to 300-horsepower for Europe, and most markets, including the U.S., getting the option of two gasoline engines rated at 231-horsepower and 306-horsepower. A new hybrid model is also tipped to be on the table, though specifications are still forthcoming.

The new X3 is expected to appear in showrooms in the second half of next year as a 2011 model, joining the smaller X1 crossover as well.

BMW's M3 has undergone a huge evolution since its birth with the E30 3-series. Growing in size, power and cylinder count, the latest M3 hardly bears any resemblance to its forbears. And soon BMW may push the envelope even further with a new high-performance version of the already extreme car possibly on the way.

During the mid-1990s, BMW released a special version of the M3 Coupe called the M3 GT. The cars were essentially a homologation series special built to allow the E36 M3 to compete in the FIA-GT class II, IMSA GT and other international long distance races.

These latest spy shots depicting an M3 Coupe packing some race car elements, such as the front bumper with bigger air intakes and the oversized rear wing. This is not a race car, however, as indicated by the Munich registration on the car’s number plate.

Back in July, the head of BMW's M Division, Dr. Kay Segler, hinted on a production version of the current M3 GT4, so this could be the first prototypes of that vehicle. The M3 GT4 contested this year's 24 Hour Nurburgring endurance race through BMW's Customer Racing program, and the M Division was previously considering the car for limited production so that more entry-level race teams could use it for competition.

Ras Al Khaimah roads cannot cope with traffic increase, says official

Accident rate in RAK likely to rise because of inadequate infrastructure.

Ras Al Khaimah: The RAK Traffic and Licensing Department announced on Monday that roads in the emirate have not been able to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles registered in the past five years.

Colonel Hassan Rashid Al Braiki, the department's Deputy Director, said the increasing number of vehicles registered with the department and running on the roads in the past five years as the emirate has boomed, has resulted in many road accidents.

Colonel Al Braiki said the majority of roads are inadequate for the number of vehicles using them. The number of light and heavy vehicles on the roads has increased in such a way that they have ended up as a burden on the roads.

He said many companies and factories have been set up in Ras Al Khaimah and the number of people applying for driving licences had increased tremendously — whereas the roads had remained the same. He stressed that this particular reason has caused road accidents, fatalities and injuries.

Pressure

Colonel Al Braiki said the Traffic and Licensing Department had sent requests to the Municipality, and the RAK Works and General Services Department to improve safety measures on roads.

He stressed that what has been achieved in this regard does not even come up to the minimum requirement and roads remain under pressure because of the increasing number of vehicles.

He said because of the current situation of the roads, the rate of road accidents in Ras Al Khaimah would be on the rise and more lives would be lost, with public and private property also being destroyed.

Colonel Al Braiki said that new roads should be built and they should have the maximum safety measures for road users.

Based on BMW’s C1 scooter, originally offered in Europe nearly a decade ago, the Munich automaker developed the C1-E, an electric concept scooter as a contribution to project eSum (European Safer Urban Motorcycling). Unlike a traditional scooter, the driver of the C1-E is encapsulated by what is dubbed the ’safety-cell’ which is a pod-like enclosure around the driver that serves to absorb impact and prevent roll-overs with its conspicuously designed roll over bar. Also not ordinary of scooters, the driver of the C1-E is secured via seatbelt.

The C1-E is powered by an electric motor based on components from Vectrix, an electric scooter manufacturer, and the lithium-ion battery powers sufficiently enough to master most inner-city traffic. BMW says that the C1-E could also be equipped with a small internal combustion engine.

The C1-E is not scheduled for production, as it is strictly a test-study, though the findings of the study will serve to improve the future state of single-track vehicle development.

This is what a safe, environment-friendly and highly practical single track vehicle for city traffic could look like in the future. BMW Motorrad developed the C1-E study as a contribution to the European safety project eSUM. This study unit is based on the concept of the BMW C1. It is characterized by a very high level of active and passive safety and is driven by an electric motor.

The BMW C1-E provides exemplary protection for its rider. This is ensured by the safety cell with the conspicuous roll-over bar which dynamically spans the rider seat in combination with the energy-absorbing impact element at the nose end. A further special point is that the C1-E rider wears a seat-belt. In the study this safety feature is highlighted by red belts and belt buckles.

Visually the concept vehicle expresses brand typical sheer driving pleasure and clearly distinguishes itself from typical scooter looks. Its lines are dynamically stretched and flow horizontally with a low visual centre of gravity. The fairing with its windscreen, the luggage space behind the rider and the side stand for effortless parking ensure high suitability for everyday riding combined with a high degree of wind and weather protection.

The electric motor employed in the study has been designed for city use and is based on components by the company Vectrix. The motor obtains its power from a lithium-ion battery and thus possesses sufficient power for mastering most inner-city traffic riding with ease. Alternatively the vehicle could also be equipped with an efficient, low-emissions internal combustion engine.

The safety features of the C1-E have been taken from the former BMW C1 and further enhanced. BMW's avant-garde two-wheeler is regarded as a milestone in safety on two wheels. It is the only motorised single-track vehicle to be exempt from mandatory helmet wearing in almost all European countries.

This BMW Motorrad study is to remain the only model of its kind. Series production is currently not planned. Nevertheless, findings from the project will find their way into other future developments in the field of single-track vehicles.

eSUM stands for European Safer Urban Motorcycling. It is a cooperation project between major urban European motorcycling centres and motorcycle manufacturers. The cities currently involved in the project include Paris , Rome , Barcelona and London and the manufacturers are BMW and Piaggio.

The advantage of two-wheeled transportation is that it offers a great opportunity for improving the flow of traffic in urban locations. Moreover, it is environmentally friendly and lends itself to individualisation. However, the vast majority of accidents occur in urban traffic, in areas where 80 percent of the population live. The idea behind eSum is to look into ways of countering this trend. The joint goal is the identification, development, and practical demonstration of measures which are able to guarantee safe motorcycle and motor-scooter transport in the inner-city traffic of the future.

One of BMW Motorrad's major concerns over the last twenty years has been the improvement of motorcycle safety. This was amply demonstrated by the consistent strategy which has led to the Motorrad ABS and continued with its long-term ongoing development. Only a few weeks ago, on August 31, the 1,000,000th BMW motorcycle with Integral ABS, a BMW K 1300 R, left the production line in Berlin-Spandau.

Since 2005, a series of further active safety features have been developed to enhance the safety BMW motorcycles still further: RDC Tyre Pressure Control, ASC Anti-Slip Control, the new Race ABS and the DTC Traction Control incorporated in the new BMW S 1000 RR, not to mention the innovative range of BMW Motorrad rider equipment.

Over and above this, BMW Motorrad is also conducting research into forward-looking rider assistance systems designed to increased road safety, as part of the ConnectedRide project. Features being looked at include cross-traffic and traffic-light assistance as well as a warning system for impending poor weather, road obstacles, an approaching emergency vehicle, or sudden braking manoeuvres.

Force India aims to close gap on BMW

Force India boss Vijay Mallya is hoping his team will be able to close the gap on BMW Sauber at this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Silverstone-based squad has performed strongly in recent races and is currently in seventh place in the standings, 11 points behind BMW.

Mallya reckons his team has nothing to lose and says Force India will try its best to close the gap in Brazil.

"We will be giving it everything we have," said Mallya. "Brazil should suit us, our car has performed well on tracks with a similar configuration, and now we've got the taste for points we want to get some more.

"BMW are 11 points ahead of us in the Constructors' Championship so if Tonio and Adrian push hard we could at least close that gap. It's going to be difficult but we have everything to gain and nothing to lose by making this our aim."

Mallya admitted it was disappointing to miss out on a points finish in Japan, but the Indian is optimistic the team will be competitive at Interlagos.

"We expected it to be very tough in Singapore but we had high hopes for the Japanese Grand Prix," he said. "To a certain extent we got there as we qualified well, ran towards the front of the field and raced with larger teams. However of course we missed out on points again so ultimately it was frustrating we could not capitalise on this.

"Based on this form I am however very optimistic we can make up ground in Brazil. Adrian and Tonio both know the track and the car is at its peak so I'm confident we should again be Q2 or higher and again racing for the points."
