A Love Affair: Genevieve Gorder

@Real_Genevieve Rocks!

I’ve been meaning to blog about this ever since my trip to Las Vegas Market back in January, but just never got around to it! Anyways…if you haven’t seen Genevieve Gorder’s new rug line, then it’s about time you have! While at LV Market, Ash and I had the pleasure of meeting Genevieve! She was there promoting her new rug line, which I love. All of them are beautiful, easy and would look good in just about any room! They are all flatweaves, wool, easy to clean easy to live with.

Genevieve has been one of my favorites ever since her days on Trading Spaces. Originally from Minnesota (hello!), she now is a designer in Manhattan. She was so down-to-earth and approachable when we spoke with her at rug display. Not only am I loving her new rug line, but every week I tune into Dear Genevieve on HGTV.

HOUZZ: Beautiful Shower Curtains

I’m over at Houzz today sharing my top 20 favorite shower curtains. I must admit, I prefer a glass enclosure over a shower curtain, but some homeowners have no other option but to use a shower curtain. If you have no other choice than to use a shower curtain, make it a beautiful one! Here are some of my favorite shower curtains that are sure to beautify any bathroom! Tuesday Thoughts {a quote + a pretty bedroom}

How sweet is that bedroom? Loving the pink chevron floor! The headboard, the stools at the end of the bed and the orange poof all work really well together against the white background. Very crisp, clean and fresh! This is a good example of how to decorate a white walled apartment that you cannot paint (minus the floors!)

I hope you’re all off to a great week. Mine’s been a busy one so far and there’s no sign of slowing down. Keep your energy up and surround yourself with positive, energy boosting (not energy sucking) people! Happy Tuesday!

Makeover Monday: Wall of Frames

I get asked a lot how to create a collage of frames. Whether it be a collection of family photos, frames alone or a random collection of art, the key is keeping it personal while displaying it stylishly. If you’re designing a family photo wall, I like to suggest to clients of mine to either choose black and white (like my clients above) or print the photos all in color. One way or the other will give you maximum design impact. There are countless ways to create a wall of frames. Here are some of my favorites.

You can choose to do a more symmetrical, balanced grid-like pattern like the one above, or a completely random layout like the one below. Either are great options. The good news is, there are no rules and you can’t go wrong!

A good place to put your collage is going up your stairs if you have them, or in a long hallway.

You may also choose to keep the frames all in one color, like the white ones below.

Or these black ones below. I like how they added vinyl word art to this display.

You could also use just frames, with nothing in them as art. I think this looks totally cool. It’s more about creating shape than displaying artwork.

This example below would be an inexpensive way to create a large, impactful art wall. Just purchase cheap frames from a store like Ikea and fill them with colored paper. Voila! Instant art.

I like the silhouette idea below too. Very classic and chic.

Or how about a wall of framed mirrors? I’m loving this idea! I like how they used a few mirrors plus a few empty frames. It creates visual interest.

How about this idea below? A wall of framed wallpaper or wrapping paper above your bed? Very impactful, yet not a lot of money was spent here.

One of my favorite and most creative ways to use an art wall is to camouflage your flat screen. You see it? It almost blends right in!

Before this young family moved into their new, larger home, they wanted to update and freshen the "shabby chic" look left by the previous owners. We started by painting every room in the house and complimenting most rooms of the home with a high gloss black trim. All finishes and surfaces, including floors, walls and ceilings, were replaced to achieve a mix of traditional and modern. We changed out the kitchen appliances, countertops, backsplash, hardware and lighting in the kitchen. Wallpaper, decor, flooring, finishes and furnishings throughout the entirety of the home made this a house a home.

The homeowners wanted a classic white kitchen. The existing cabinets were white and in good condition so we decided to keep the old cabinets, but update the rest of the kitchen with new finishes. We changed out the old, out-dated tile counters with new Italian marble countertops. The appliances were upgraded with stainless steel. The backsplash is a laser cut marble tile. The cabinets that used to hang above the island was demolished and replaced with these oversized pendants. The cabinet hardware was switched out to new, shiny stainless steel. The existing cushion on the built in breakfast area was reupholstered with a new fabric that provides a punch of color.

We wanted to make the family room inviting and a cozy place to plop down, relax in front of the TV or read a book. New custom sofas were purchased from Crate and Barrel and accessorized with a variety of pillows in different fabrics to create visual interest and texture. Some of the pillows were the homeowner’s from their previous house and reupholstered with new fabric to match. A new rug was purchased to pull together the black, white, grey and yellow color scheme.

In this guest bathroom we wanted to keep it classic, yet modernize it a bit with some black and white (my favorite!). In here, we replaced the original floor with a black and white hex tile and we replaced the shower surround with a classic subway tile with black grout. The countertop was changed out to an Italian marble and the mirror was replaced with a new one with a thick, black frame. The hardware was also exchanged for these cute black and white checked knobs.

This dining room’s makeover is drastic! We incorporated the homeowner’s existing dining furniture and turned up the glam factor. We had wallpaper, a chandelier, window coverings and installed to make this room feel luxurious for their guests. The homeowner’s mirror that once was brown was painted black with metallic highlights.

In the formal living room we painted the walls the same grey and the trim glossy black to keep a consistent continuity throughout the first floor. The new wood flooring runs the same throughout the entire first floor as well. We spruced up the fireplace with new paint and metallic glass tile surround. The homeowner’s accessories and family photos fit in perfectly on the built in bookshelves.

The homeowners wanted a peaceful and serene retreat from their everyday, fast paced life, so in the master bedroom, we painted a soft, calming grey with hints of calming blue. Rich textures in the bedding, furniture and window coverings make this space sumptuous and inviting. Rich and cushy Berber carpet was installed to maximize comfort.

Wedding Wednesday–Ceremony Seating Idea

THE IDEA: Have both sides of the family sit on whatever side they want during the ceremony.

Love it or hate it?

My family is small and Nick’s family is big. I think it’d be super weird if one side of our ceremony was filled with people and the other side was nearly empty. Don’t you? I’m liking the idea of not having designated sides for each side of the family. Also, what do you think about ushers? What is their purpose really? If it’s simply to walk people down the aisle, can’t the groomsmen do that?

Hey California, what happened to your sunshine?

My parents from Minnesota are here celebrating my Mom's birthday and they were looking forward to some warmth and sunshine, but instead they got chilly rains! Oh well...it's better than zero below wind chills and snow! I'm not sure about the rest of you, but we're in need of little pick me up! Here's a splash of yellow to brighten things up!

The weekend is upon us and I couldn’t be more excited!

My mom and dad are flying in from Minnesota today and we’re celebrating her birthday all weekend long. I LOVE that her birthday is a day before Valentine’s Day. It gives me an excuse to wrap all her presents in pink.

We’ll be spending much time by the beach, riding bikes and enjoying this beautiful weather southern California has been shining on us. The grandpups are quite excited to see their MN grandparents too!

A Love Affair: Equestrian Art

After our visit to the Priscilla Presley Home showroom last week at Las Vegas Market, I completely fell in love all over again with equestrian art!

Not only was I loving the horses, but Priscilla’s lavender and violet color palette was to die for. What do you think about those life size horse lamps? Pretty impressive, right? They must go in just the right space! Here’s some more of my favorites…

Wedding Wednesday-Unique Guest Book Idea

THE IDEA: Unique Guest Book with guest’s fingerprints as their signature

Love it or hate it?

I really like this idea! I think about a guest book and what the heck am I going to do with it afterwards? Store it in a box in my closet, that’s what! This way, I get a piece of art out of the deal. I’m thinking maybe a black background with grey and white balloons. I know who will be at my wedding, I don’t need a bunch of signatures to remind me! Guests can easily clean off the ink with hand sanitizer. Perfection! Do you have any other ideas for a unique guest book?

Tuesday Thoughts {a quote + a pretty entrance}

Ain’t that the truth?! Sometimes its so hard to not get caught up in all the “things” in life. Especially when you’re an interior designer and your job is to make homes beautiful with things! It’s always good to be brought back down to reality and remember what's really important.

Now, how about that entrance! LOVE! It’s so Miami to me. Usually, I’m not a big fan of a lot of big, bold color, but I have a soft spot for this space. It’s just so tropical and vibrant. How cool is that table? The chandelier and carpet running up the stairs are also at the top of my list here.

After a fire damaged a large part of their home, this couple called me to help give them a new, fresh and updated look while they remodeled their 6,500 square foot house. We started on the third level, which is where they spend most of their time. The rooms that needed help were the kitchen, family room, dining room, living room, office, two bedrooms, a bathroom, master bedroom and master bathroom. The second phase of the design project will include the second level of their home which consists of a movie theater room, media room and game room.

This is the couples master bedroom. They really wanted a contemporary space that felt relaxed, but still had a touch of glamour. The walls were painted grey, with the wall behind the headboard painted a darker navy/slate color to provide contrast against the white tufted headboard.

We infused the glamour that they wanted with items like the black chandelier, chaise lounge, white lacquer night stand and shiny accessories.

Personality is drawn into the room with the owner’s artwork above the headboard and their wedding pictures, printed in black and white and framed in black.

This is one of two guest bedrooms on the third level. All furniture and décor had to be replaced in here. In this room, the owner wanted a soothing, relaxing space for her guests. We chose a soft palette of grey, plum and white mixed with white washed oak.

In the second guest room, we decided to go with a shade darker on the grey walls, darker with the streamlined bedding and darker with the dark brown wood furniture. The result is a tad more masculine.

The image on the left is part of the second guest room. The cabinetry and countertops were replaced, and the same goes for the right image. The right image is the guest bathroom that is accessed by the second guest bedroom as well as the hallway. We wanted all finished to be cohesive and flow, so we choose the same cabinetry and countertops for in here as well. You’ll notice the water closet is painted in a darker shade of grey for contrast.

This is the homeowners office. Everything in this space is new. The homeowner wanted a bit more drama in this space so we created high contrast with dark, navy painted palls juxtaposed against white, bright, glossy furniture.

All furniture had to be replaced in the family room. We also replaced the flooring with new carpet. A new custom sectional in slate blue seats the owners guests nicely as well as the extra seating in front of the window. Artwork was purchased by an artist on Etsy and new accessories were carefully chosen to lend a comfortable, yet sophisticated feeling.

This is the homeowners kitchen and eat in breakfast area. These are the original cabinets, but we had them stained a darker color, replaced the hardware and brought them all the way to the ceiling to alleviate that space (dust catcher!) above the old cabinets. Countertops and appliances remain from before the fire to save on expenses. The glass tile backsplash and set of cabinets with glass insets are new. We also took down the old fluorescent lighting and replaced it with new, recessed lighting.

This couple entertains every week and they host large get-togethers, so extra seating was a must! We purchased 6 of these modern white stools that raise up and down, which is great because they have a variety of counter heights.

The dining set, chandelier, accessories and place settings are all new. The homeowners also invested in some roller shades as window coverings. These are actually from Lowes, and I’d definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a quality shade at a low price.
