Movies to Start the New Year: 2026

2025-12-29T13:50:00.000-08:00

Wondering what to watch after the egg nog and mistletoe? I've curated a list of movies that are perfect for January that bring in some new year energy. January can be dark and cold, but it's also a time of renewal. If you have some movies that are good for some "new year" vibes, tell me about them in the comments!

Here's my list, in no particular order:

1. Castaway (2001) - Tom Hanks gets stranded on an island around Christmas time and has to learn how to survive all alone. A perfect story for the post-Christmas daze leading into the new year. It's also a meditation of sorts about how to rebuild your life after loss, and rediscovering who you are. And, Wilson. I love Wilson.

2. Yes Man (2009) - This often overlooked Jim Carrey flick is an annual tradition in our household. We watch it every New Year's Day. This corny comedy follows "Carl" (Jim Carrey) on a journey of self-discovery when he joins a self-help style cult where you have to say "yes" to everything, no matter how crazy. The premise is flawed, but the movie is fun and funny. Zooey Deschanel is funny and delightful as a quirky musician who meets Carl. It has a theme of rejuvenating your life if you're stuck in a rut, which is perfect for the new year. A perfect comfort movie.

3. Morning Glory (2010) - Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton, and Harrison Ford star in this rom-com about a young television producer (Rachel McAdams) taking on a new job at a failing morning show, and her efforts to turn it around. Harrison Ford really shines as a jaded news reporter who is coerced into joining the morning show. The new job plot of the movie is relevant to setting goals for a new year, and starting a new chapter of your life.

4. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) - Ben Stiller plays a magazine photo manager who is about to embark on an exciting adventure. As a director, you can see a bit of Stiller’s “Severence” style coming through in this movie. A wonderful movie about getting out into the world and being bold. Great for a new year.

5. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - This quirky Wes Anderson comedy about a grand hotel has a cozy, comforting January vibe. The signature Wes Anderson style, the color palette, the symmetrical production design, the costumes, and the idiosyncratic writing style make for a January masterpiece.

6.. Triangle of Sadness (2022) - This movie is a wild ride, and you won't be bored.. "A celebrity model couple are invited on a luxury cruise for the uber-rich, helmed by an unhinged, alcoholic captain. What first appears Instagrammable ends catastrophically, leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island in a struggle of hierarchy."

7. Groundhog Day (1993) - Yeah, so Groundhog Day isn’t until February 2, but it’s close enough to late January for me to recommend for January. A story of renewal, and getting your priorities in life straight. Perfect for the new year. And a groundhog driving a truck.

Again, let me know in the comments what you think of these picks, and what you would recommend for January.

Top 7 Thanksgiving Movies 2024

2024-09-29T14:15:00.000-07:00

Thanksgiving is that cherished time of year when we gather with family, often reconnecting with loved ones we seldom see. It brings back the warmth of nostalgic memories—traveling up to Kentucky to stay with my grandparents, the house filled with the comforting aroma of turkey and all the festive trimmings. As the afternoon fades and the football ends, there’s a special magic in settling in together, embracing the cozy quiet of family time. The only question left is…what to watch? With generations gathered, from grandparents to the youngest cousins, finding the perfect movie is key. So, I’ve carefully curated a list of my favorite top 7 films to enjoy together on Thanksgiving, in no particular order.

7. Wonka

"Based on the extraordinary character at the center of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl’s most iconic children's book and one of the best-selling children's books of all time, "Wonka" tells the wondrous story of how the world's greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today." Rated PG

Wonka is a whimsical fantasy musical about the origins of Willy Wonka. I picked this one because it is a family-friendly cinematic escape from reality. Timothee Chalamet, in my opinion, does the Willy Wonka character justice. And, the songs are fanciful, touching, and entertaining. Visually, the filmmakers pay an appropriate amount of homage to the imaginative swirls of color and exaggerated fantasy elements we associate with Wonka. It is fun for adults and kids alike. A wonderful pick for Thanksgiving with the fam.

Available on: HBO MAX

6. The Wizard of Oz

"When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and en route they meet a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) that needs a brain, a Tin Man (Jack Haley) missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) who wants courage. The wizard asks the group to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) to earn his help." Rated G

This legendary classic is perfect for a family movie viewing on Thanksgiving. It's also timely since there's a new Wicked musical movie hitting theaters this Christmas. (Wicked is a Wizard of Oz prequel story that younger ones will probably be familiar with) The original Wizard of Oz might be new viewing for the younger ones in the family, and it's a nostalgic favorite for older ones. It has the fanciful vibes of a Holiday movie without actually citing a specific holiday. Another nice escapism masterpiece with a beautiful reminder that there's no place like home.

Available on: HBO MAX

5. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

"Daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Accompanied by his goddaughter, he soon finds himself squaring off against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who works for NASA." Rated: PG-13

Looking for something a bit more action-packed? Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny might just be the perfect pick. It carries the gravitas and nostalgia of a decades-old franchise, but it is modern filmmaking at the highest level. Dial of Destiny incorporates cutting-edge de-aging special effects in some scenes to make Harrison Ford look years younger. And, let's not overlook, it's got plenty of explosions, car chases, and whip cracking action to entertain the family. The whole thing is a fun nod to the originals, while giving Indie one last hoorah.

Available on: Disney+

4. Hidden Figures

"Three brilliant African American women at NASA -- Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson -- serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world." Rated PG

Hidden Figures has become a modern classic. It checks off all the boxes for a successful Thanksgiving movie to watch with the family: It's entertaining, educational, uplifting, it's a period piece, and family friendly. Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae shine in this blockbuster cast of all-stars. The tone is bright, effervescent, and carried along by good-natured fast pace and an energetic soundtrack by Pharrell Williams. And while the message is serious, the drama never gets too heavy for kids.

Available on: Apple TV and Amazon Prime Rental

3. Young Woman and the Sea

"Daisy Ridley stars as the accomplished swimmer who was born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905. Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement -- a 21-mile trek from France to England." Rated: PG

Continuing the trend of inspirational period pieces, Young Woman and the Sea is a sports drama set in the 1920s. This family-friendly film combines suspense and inspiration, making it an ideal pick for Thanksgiving viewing. Based on Glen Stout’s book and a true story, the movie offers both heart and history. It’s the newest addition to my list, and as of this writing, it’s still showing in select theaters. Daisy Ridley shines in the lead role, delivering a standout performance that adds depth to this remarkable story.

Available on: Disney+

2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe

"During the World War II bombings of London, four English siblings are sent to a country house where they will be safe. One day Lucy (Georgie Henley) finds a wardrobe that transports her to a magical world called Narnia. After coming back, she soon returns to Narnia with her brothers, Peter (William Moseley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and her sister, Susan (Anna Popplewell). There they join the magical lion, Aslan (Liam Neeson), in the fight against the evil White Witch, Jadis (Tilda Swinton)." Rated: PG

This film transports viewers back into the whimsical and imaginative world of fantasy cinema. Based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved series, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe explores the timeless battle between good and evil, with the majestic lion Aslan serving as a powerful Christ figure. Its wintry setting, evoking both the chill of winter and the magic of an otherworldly realm, feels especially fitting for the Thanksgiving season. Despite being made in 2005, the special effects still hold up, and the story remains as captivating as ever. Children will undoubtedly be enchanted by the adventure, while adults can appreciate the deeper themes. In keeping with my love for period pieces, The Chronicles of Narnia is grounded in a World War II backdrop, offering a touch of history alongside its fantasy. The movie delivers cinematic escapism at its finest, complete with action, wonder, and a dash of nostalgia.

Available on: Disney+

1. Elf

"Buddy (Will Ferrell) was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa's elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn't fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. As it happens, this is Walter Hobbs (James Caan), a cynical businessman. After a DNA test proves this, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with the childlike Buddy with increasingly chaotic results." Rated: PG

Rounding out my picks is the perennial holiday favorite, Elf. This Will Ferrell classic is a perfect choice for Thanksgiving with the family, as it’s lighthearted, festive, and endlessly hilarious. I never tire of watching Ferrell’s Buddy gleefully slather an absurd amount of syrup on spaghetti—it’s pure comedy gold. Elf is a fun and charming introduction to the Christmas season that never fails to entertain.

Available on: Amazon Prime and Apple TV Rental

Movies for October 2024 that are NOT Halloween movies

2024-09-26T20:43:00.000-07:00

October is spooky season, and the Halloween and horror movie genres hog the spotlight. However, if Halloween movies are not quite your thing, or if you're bored with the same old selections, then you'll enjoy my curated list of movies for October. These movies capture the spirit /vibe / feelings / mood of the season without being too on-the-nose. You can also comment some of your favorite "non-Halloween" movies for October in the comments. This is not an exhaustive list. Now, in no particular order, my movies for October 2024 that are not Halloween movies:

10. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

The Royal Tenenbaums comes loaded with a heavy dose of early 2000's nostalgia, a magical cast, and a quirky Wes Anderson autumn style that's perfectly fitting for a cozy October movie night.

9. The Batman (2022)

This 2022 version of The dark knight was a popular blockbuster, and even spawned a television series spinoff starring Colin Farrell in his memorable role as The Penguin. When we first see Batman in a dark subway terminal in The Batman, it happens to be Halloween night. In fact, he even mentions in the opening monologue that it's Thursday Oct. 31, which happens to be the night of Halloween in 2024. Very fitting. The Batman is a dark, thrilling, and exciting take on the classic comic book character that's perfect for October.

8. Coco (2017)

On a lighter note, Coco is a charming fantasy story about a young boy named Miguel who discovers the importance of family ties and how to honor family. It is visually gorgeous with its rich colors and textures. The scenery of the afterworld is steeped with the style of the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday, which is fitting for October. This touching Disney/Pixar masterpiece is a nice family-friendly addition to your October playlist without being explicitly about Halloween.

7. Marriage Story (2019)

For those of you who may be into a more hard-hitting indie drama, Marriage Story might just be the perfect pick. Directed by indie legend Noah Baumbach. It's a beautifully crafted drama with powerhouse performances from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as a couple whose marriage is dissolving right before our eyes. It's a bit dark, and some scenes are tough to watch, but it's fully riveting. There's something electric about seeing Black Widow and Kylo Ren scream at each other. It also has a fall vibe that's very fitting for the changing season in October. It's a season of change, and sometimes the growing pains can be excruciating. Special note: Laura Dern won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for this.

6. Juno (2007)

Juno is comin' in hot with the 2000's autumn indie vibes. I always considered this movie a bit ahead of its time, and buoyed by sharp writing from Diablo Cody that included charming and quirky characters. Its warm tone is perfect for October.

5. The Social Network (2010)

The Social Network is a gripping drama that delves into the origins of the social media revolution, with a particular focus on the creation of Facebook. While it tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg’s rise, it also offers a sobering and cautious look at the far-reaching impact of social media on society. Director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin capture lightning in a bottle with their sharp, fast-paced portrayal of ambition, betrayal, and innovation. Its moody, tension-filled atmosphere makes it a perfect watch for October, evoking a sense of intrigue and unease fitting for the season.

4. Dark Shadows (2012)

No October movie list is complete without a Tim Burton film, and while Dark Shadows may not be his most acclaimed work, it’s certainly worth a revisit. A quirky reimagining of the 1970s soap opera of the same name, the film is filled with offbeat ‘70s references and showcases the peak of Burton’s creative partnership with Johnny Depp. With its signature Burton blend of the macabre and the whimsical, complete with vampires, witches, and gothic overtones, it’s an ideal choice to capture the spooky, nostalgic spirit of October.

3. Nightmare Alley (2021)

This sprawling masterpiece set in the world of a traveling carnival comes from Guillermo Del Toro, a director renowned for his dark, fantastical storytelling. Nightmare Alley follows a cunning con man who uses a fake psychic routine to manipulate those around him. It’s a haunting, visually stunning film filled with violence, intrigue, and rich, atmospheric details. The carnival setting and psychological themes make it an ideal October watch, offering an eerie, immersive experience without being overtly tied to Halloween.

2. Ex Machina (2015)

Ex Machina is a tense, thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that explores the boundaries between artificial intelligence and humanity. The film follows a young programmer invited to test the capabilities of a highly advanced AI, only to uncover darker, unsettling layers to both the machine and its creator. With its eerie atmosphere, psychological tension, and haunting questions about technology and control, Ex Machina is an ideal watch for October. Its cold, isolated setting and creeping sense of unease make it a chilling addition to the month’s lineup, perfectly complementing the season’s mood of mystery and suspense. But, it does not explicitly reference Halloween.

1. Wonka (2023)

I’m wrapping up this list on a whimsical note. Wonka is a magical musical prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Timothée Chalamet shining as the eccentric and imaginative young chocolatier. Its vibrant color palette, musical charm, and fairy tale quality offer a delightful escape. While it’s not Halloween-centric, the film’s dreamy, fantastical atmosphere makes it a perfect October pick, bringing a touch of wonder and magic to the season.

Houses often serve as more than mere settings in cinema; they can be characters, symbols, or even the heart of the plot. In this exploration, we'll dive into eight films where the house is not just a backdrop but a central player in the story.

Clue (1985)

In "Clue," the mansion itself is a vital part of the narrative. Set in a sprawling, mysterious estate, it's the ideal setting for a murder mystery based on the popular board game. Each room hosts a new clue, and the layout of the house itself becomes essential to the plot, adding intrigue and complexity to the storyline.

The Haunted Mansion (2003)

Disney's "The Haunted Mansion" brings the theme park attraction to life, with the house acting as the star. Filled with ghosts, secret passageways, and mysterious enchantments, the mansion's unique characteristics are central to the comedy and adventure. The house's design and personality drive the film, making it an unforgettable character.

Parasite (2019)

The two contrasting houses in "Parasite" symbolize the economic divide between the families in this Korean dark comedy thriller. The wealthy Park family's modern, luxurious home becomes a stage for a story about class struggle and deception. The architecture and layout of the house contribute to the film's suspense and social commentary.

The Burbs (1989)

"The Burbs" takes place in suburban America, where a group of neighbors becomes suspicious of the new family on the block. The house itself, shrouded in mystery and appearing neglected, becomes a symbol of fear and curiosity. It is the focal point of the community's paranoia, driving the plot forward.

The Money Pit (1986)

Tom Hanks and Shelley Long star in "The Money Pit," where a house becomes the primary source of comedy. Their dream home turns into a nightmare as one thing after another falls apart. The house's endless problems are central to the story, creating a hilarious commentary on homeownership and relationships.

Home Alone (1990)

The McCallister home in "Home Alone" is the stage for one of the most iconic holiday comedies. Left alone, young Kevin turns the house into a fortress against burglars. The house's layout, features, and decorations become essential props for Kevin's clever and humorous traps.

Disturbia (2007)

In "Disturbia," the house next door becomes an object of obsession. Confined to his home, the protagonist begins spying on his neighbor, suspecting him of murder. The house becomes a symbol of intrigue and fear, its closed curtains and dark secrets central to the film's suspenseful narrative.

Panic Room (2002)

"Panic Room" focuses on a woman and her daughter trapped in their new home's panic room by burglars. The house's design and the existence of the panic room are key to the film's intense and claustrophobic atmosphere. The house becomes a battleground, its every nook and cranny essential to the plot.

From murder mysteries to social critiques, the house in cinema can be a powerful narrative tool. These eight films demonstrate how a house can transcend being merely a location, transforming into a character, symbol, or the very essence of the story. They offer a unique lens through which to view themes of family, fear, comedy, and societal issues, making houses in film a fascinating subject worth exploring.

Black & White Movies

An Evening in Black and White: Rediscovering the Monochrome Magic

In the kaleidoscope of modern cinema, the appeal of black and white movies often gets overlooked. However, these monochromatic gems like "Roma," "Good Night, and Good Luck.," "Ed Wood," "Nebraska," "The Artist," and "Manhattan" exhibit an artistic brilliance that transcends color.

Starting our journey is Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma" (2018). Set in 1970s Mexico, this movie's choice of black and white conjures a nostalgic atmosphere, while also bringing raw emotions into sharper focus. Every shot is a meticulously crafted snapshot of life that subtly combines the personal and the political, showing us how intimate stories are intertwined with grand societal narratives.

"Good Night, and Good Luck." (2005) delves into the world of 1950s broadcast journalism during the McCarthy era. The black and white format in this George Clooney-directed film enhances its historical authenticity, transporting viewers back to an era of palpable tension. It's a vivid reminder of the press's crucial role as society's watchdog, a role that remains relevant even in our technicolor present.

Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" (1994) is a biopic of the notoriously eccentric filmmaker Edward D. Wood Jr. The choice of black and white ties into Wood's own penchant for the same. Burton's decision underlines the stylistic parallels, and adds a layer of fond, knowing homage to the era of B-movies that Wood inhabited.

"Nebraska" (2013), directed by Alexander Payne, explores a father-son journey across the Midwest. Its black and white aesthetics contribute to the stark, bleak beauty of the landscape, reflecting the somber, poignant journey the characters embark on. It emphasizes the raw, stripped-down exploration of family dynamics and the American dream.

"The Artist" (2011), a French romantic comedy-drama, is a love letter to the silent era of Hollywood. Its decision to use black and white (and silence) is fundamental to its core. This format immerses viewers in the period it's portraying, enhancing the charm and emotional punch of the narrative. It cleverly reminds us that cinema, at its heart, is about storytelling that transcends dialogue and color.

Lastly, Woody Allen's "Manhattan" (1979) depicts New York City through a black and white lens, making the city itself a character. It's a dazzling portrait that exudes nostalgia and love for the city, emphasizing its timeless allure. The monochrome palette elevates the city's architectural beauty and frames the romantic and intellectual tribulations of its characters.

In each of these movies, black and white cinematography is not merely a creative choice; it's a crucial component of the narrative. It intensifies emotions, accentuates details, and adds depth to the story, proving that storytelling can be incredibly compelling even in the absence of color. An evening with these movies is a trip through a rich spectrum of stories that are as vibrant as any color film, a testament to the enduring power of black and white in cinema.

The Worst Blockbusters Ever

2023-08-31T05:00:00.001-07:00

There have been some fantastic blockbusters in cinema history, but not all were created equal. Today, we're diving into some that missed the mark entirely. These films promised grand spectacles but delivered disappointment. Here are some of the most lackluster blockbusters ever:

**1. Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace**

- The over-reliance on CGI diminished the tangible world-building of the original trilogy.

- The plot was bogged down with uninteresting political debates and trade disputes.

- Many fans found Jar Jar Binks, a key character, annoying rather than amusing.

- The dialogue often felt stilted and lackluster.

**2. Catwoman**

- Halle Berry's Catwoman had little resemblance to the beloved DC comics character, which frustrated fans.

- The plot was convoluted, and the character motivations were unclear.

- Overuse of CGI led to unrealistic and jarring action sequences.

**3. Batman V Superman**

- The film suffered from attempting to introduce too many plot threads and characters, leading to an unfocused narrative.

- The bleak and dark tone of the movie was off-putting to some viewers, straying from the more hopeful elements of the source material.

- The film's climax hinged on a coincidental shared name, which many viewers found unbelievable and poorly executed.

**4. The Justice League**

- The original 2017 version was criticized for its inconsistent tone, likely due to a change in directors mid-production.

- The antagonist, Steppenwolf, was criticized as a weak and underdeveloped villain.

- Despite an ensemble of beloved characters, the movie felt rushed, failing to give the characters the depth they deserved.

**5. The Cat in the Hat**

- The movie strayed drastically from the spirit of Dr. Seuss's original book, incorporating adult humor and innuendo, which felt inappropriate in a children's film.

- The chaotic narrative lacked cohesion and structure.

- The overly theatrical performances were more annoying than entertaining.

**6. Jack and Jill**

- Many found the humor to be crude and lowbrow, with an over-reliance on slapstick.

- Adam Sandler's dual roles were criticized as grating and tiresome.

- The plot was thin and felt like a weak scaffolding for a series of comedic gags.

**7. Grown Ups & Grown Ups 2**

- Despite boasting a cast of seasoned comedic actors, the humor often fell flat and resorted to lowbrow jokes.

- Both movies were criticized for their lack of substantial plot and character development.

- Many scenes felt like improvised sketches that detracted from a coherent narrative.

These films, despite their blockbuster status, serve as reminders that bigger isn't always better. A compelling narrative, rich characters, and careful execution are critical ingredients in making a movie truly memorable. Without these, even the most high-profile blockbusters can fall short of expectations.

The Iron Man Movies: a Retrospective

2023-08-30T05:00:00.000-07:00

When Jon Favreau’s "Iron Man" blasted onto the big screen in 2008, little did we know that it would mark the genesis of a cultural phenomenon, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Anchored by Robert Downey Jr.'s charismatic portrayal of Tony Stark, the Iron Man trilogy has left an indelible mark on pop culture.

The first "Iron Man" movie was a gamble. At the time, Marvel Studios was new to filmmaking, and Iron Man was considered a lesser-known hero compared to the likes of Spider-Man or the X-Men. However, the combination of Favreau’s direction, Downey Jr.'s embodiment of the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, and the film's fresh approach to the superhero genre made it a surprise hit, both critically and commercially.

"Iron Man 2" followed in 2010, delving deeper into Stark's character while further expanding the MCU. While it didn't quite reach the heights of its predecessor, it was nonetheless a crucial stepping stone in building the interconnected world of Marvel's superheroes. The sequel introduced Black Widow and gave audiences more of Stark's banter with his trusted aide, Pepper Potts, establishing lasting relationships within the MCU.

"Iron Man 3," directed by Shane Black, presented a more personal journey for Tony Stark. Released in 2013, it explored Stark's struggle with PTSD following the Battle of New York in "The Avengers." The film divided audiences with its controversial take on the Mandarin, Iron Man's arch-nemesis in the comics, yet it concluded the trilogy on a high note, showcasing the human behind the suit.

The Iron Man trilogy has had a profound impact on pop culture. Tony Stark's witty one-liners, his complex relationship with Pepper Potts, his friendship with James Rhodes - all these elements have become ingrained in our collective cultural consciousness. The design of the Iron Man suit has influenced everything from toys to cosplay, and Stark's catchphrase "I am Iron Man" is iconic in the annals of cinema.

Moreover, the Iron Man movies laid the foundation for the MCU, a franchise that has since redefined the concept of cinematic universes. It demonstrated that superhero films could be fun and deeply character-driven while hinting at a larger world, filled with possibilities and future narratives.

The making of these movies also had a considerable impact on the film industry. Their success demonstrated the viability of long-term, interconnected storytelling across multiple movies, inspiring other studios to attempt shared universes.

In retrospect, the Iron Man trilogy not only brought Tony Stark to life but also played an instrumental role in shaping the landscape of contemporary blockbuster cinema. The films represent the dawn of the MCU, an era of storytelling that has transformed the superhero genre, leaving an enduring legacy on pop culture.
