Cousin Shane's Fried Okra Reciepe

Today I discovered my own reciepe for frying okra that I grow in my garden. It came out so good that I just had to share it.

1 pound of fresh chopped okra
1 cup of white corn meal
1 cup of all purpose flour
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons soul food spice
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

dredge okra in a egg wash, or butter milk and mix spices and flour in paper bag. add okra and shake bag. Fry in vegetable oil until both sides of okra are golden brown

A flash in the dark

There is a reason why it’s called the witching hour. There is a reason why your hair will stand on the back of you neck.

Close your eyes baby, and hold my hand, because I’m about to scare you.

I was young and wild, the world had opened up for me and I was not afraid of anything. There wasn’t a darkness that I could not light up. Every friend I held dear was just like a brother, some could have been my twin.

Great ideas always seem to happen under the influence. The beer bottles melted by a raging fire, and the best of friends forged a circle of trust.

“There is a house; an old house in the town I grew up in, it’s falling apart. There are things in there that you cannot see, that you cannot fight.”

“Shut the fuck up with that shit”

“I think we should check it out, bring a camera and take a picture of all us in a haunted house”

“Sounds like fun to me”

“Let’s go right now, what are we waiting for?”

The dare was laid down; a decision had to be made. Man hood had to be proven at every opportunity.

Two hours of driving down a long lonely road, that winded like a snake that bit us every chance it got.

Thirty minutes down a dirt road that had not been used in years, and the old truck bounced over the ruts and bumps.

I don’t know who saw it first, but in the distance upon a small hill the old house stood crooked as if the moonlight was the only thing that held it up. A light tingle of fear enters my fingers knifing its way up my arm, making the hair stand on end.

We parked, jumped out of the old truck, and banded together like warriors about to take siege to a castle.

The steps creaked like the knees of an old man. The wood was rotted and buckled under my weight. The door had rotted off its hinges, and had fallen sideways to block our entrance. It was kicked and fell inwards with a crash, and the years of dust flew into the air.

Inside the house is a fuzzy memory. Every step was light, and someone else was inside with us, maybe something else was there as well. I could feel it, that sense of being watched, that terrible feeling of something bad about to happen, but to macho to say something, or do anything about it.

The tension was building; I heard it in the mouse voices of my friends. None of us wanted to be there any longer.

“Let’s just take the picture and get out of here”

The best idea we had yet. We gathered in the kitchen, and the camera was placed on a counter. We gathered around and I tried to smile for the picture, but my mouth would not form, my lips were frozen in place.

I was cold, shivering in the darkness. Huddled with my friends and wanting to just run from this horrible place as fast as I could.

The bright flash made me cringe; it blinded me for just a second. My sight returned quickly, quicker then that of my friends. Being color blind does have its advantages. At the moment my eyes adjusted quickly when a friend took a step, he couldn’t see at all, and he screamed as his leg fell threw the old wooden floor. I reached for him, but it was too late, and the blood from his leg was all over my hands.

I helped him up and one of the others helped him out of the house. The camera still stood on the counter, and I walked over to get it. It flashed and blinded me, I heard a crash, felt the wood begin to shutter beneath me. I had lost all sense of direction. I blinked hard trying to get my vision back. The air was thicker, and I could taste the dirt in mouth as I began to choke on it.

I could see in a blur through the darkness, the light danced off objects I was getting dizzy, and felt like puking. With a deep breath I regained my bearings and reached for the camera, it flashed again as I grabbed it. At that moment I felt something pull on my jacket hard and I resisted as fear took me.

“Come on man, we’re leaving”

The voice was soothing, but it wasn’t one I recognized. I felt a large hand take a hold of mine. It led me slowly to the front door and as the moon light hit my face I was able to see again.

I could see my friends over by the truck ripping up a shirt to wrap up a bloody leg.

I looked back and saw no one inside the house. I do not know who guided me out; I don’t think I will ever know.

But, I do have a picture.

Good Old War is a band that I have recently heard and have completely gone crazy for. I love there sound, and there down to earth and unpolished stlye of country music.

Return to Zork and Serenity...strange and it wasn't intended

Last night while enduring the endless time suck called "my job", a million thoughts traveled in and out of my brain. Two or three of them I can actually recall, well maybe not, but one of them I can recall because it was a doosey!

I'm there sitting in the most uncomfortable chair on the planet, a wire spring pocking my ass cheek, wondering if I remembered to zip my fly up from my last trip to the bathroom when a memory got caught on some sticky portion in my brain. A phrase from my past, from when I was a teen. "And thereeeee allllll deaddd." What the fuck? and then another phrase, this time with a heavy drunken slur, "You won't sum rye?...Corse' ya do." I exclaimed to the uncertainty of my co worker sitting beside me, "what the fuck?" She gave me a look, but she always gives me dirty looks when I'm thinking. Thinking is not allowed on the factory floor.

I had a ton of thinking to do. I had to remember something from 20 years ago. Then I had to go through a period of being upset that I had a "20 years ago". But, once the dust settled and I extinguished the anxiety of being old, my subconscious coughed up what I was desiring. The Return to Zork.

A game my brother had on his computer that I was not suppose to use. A game that became a cult classic if only between me and a few friends. A game from 1994 that gave my buddies and I endless hours of quotes and sayings that would confound and make other people uncomfortable. "You won't some rye?" would quickly be answered by someone else, "of course you do." This had to be said before each beer was consumed, and it also guaranteed that the young man getting up for the beer would bring one back for his buddy.

The Return to Mother Fuckin' Zork! It had been long forgotten and it was probably better that way, but here it is alive and well. And guess what? ya I found it on you tube. Here you go, enjoy.

Just in case I haven't told you before I am going to start posting my song of the day. If you like it then buy the mp3 from amazon, if you don't, then buy it any way and perhaps it will grow on you.

This is Testament. One of my favorite metal bands and this song is called "Return to Serenity". There token metal ballad. Token it might be, but it's hella good!

The Yellow Dog

The sky is red on this lonely morning, and I am traveling back in time. It is cold and I am standing at the bus stop with my hands in my pocket. One of my shoes is untied but I really don't care and pay it no attention. The chatter box is talking, the girls are giggling, and I am the sleepy head.

I can hear the dads closing the doors to cars in distant driveways, and see the moms peek through curtains making sure everything is as it should be. We were the neighborhood kids, and we belong to everyone on the block.

The fun dad honks his horn and waves as he drives by the grumpy one follows but just passes in his angry car. The Car pool dads all pile into a van, while us kids begin to get louder and more playful. The girls are playing hop scotch while, chatter box digs in his back pack for a football. Lunch box's and bags get stacked up at the edge of a drive way and we toss the ball around and I tie my shoe, catch the ball and become John Elway.

"Awwww Mannnnnnn"

The sputter of the yellow dog can be heard on the next street down, It’s almost time and my stomach starts to sink, the fun has to end in a few moments. The ball, the hopscotch, the kids, the moms, the dads, all have to begin the day.

I look down to the end of the block and see the yellow bus turning onto the street, and slowly making its way toward the stop. A mom yells from a kitchen window, "you kids get your bags!"

I grab my lunch box, and back pack, unzip it to make sure I remembered to put my skelator in it for recess. The pecking order begins as we all fall into a line, the girls first and then the boys. We prepared for the morning battle of who was going to be the coolest and get to sit at the back of the bus.

The sputtering and coughing yellow dog crawls to a stop and I can smell the acid stench of the exhaust as one by one we all take hold of the handle and step up into the bus.
