요즘 이 블로그에 올라오는 글의 수가 많이 줄었습니다. 제가 이런 저런 일이 많아졌기도 하고, 글을 올리는 재미도 줄어들었고, 구면 파노라마 사진에 빠져 들었고... 등등 여러가지 원인이 있습니다.

그러다보니 처음 블로그를 쓸 때부터 정리해왔던 구글 LatLong 블로그의 글 마저, 번역하지 않고 정리만 하는 걸로 바꾸었지만, 요즘엔 그나마도 빠뜨리는 경우가 많아졌습니다.

그래서... 생각한 것이 당분간이라도 우선 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식은 몇개씩 모아서 한꺼번에 정리하는 걸로 했습니다. 오늘이 그 첫번째입니다.

구글 대중교통 업그레이드(Autumn updates for Google Transit) : 11월 2일

프랑스 최고급 와인 생산지인 보르도(Bordeaux)를 비롯하여, 이탈리아, 스페인, 체코, 영국 등의 도시에서 구글 대중교통을 지원하게 되었다고 합니다. 또 미국의 일부 소도시들과 아랍에미레이트의 두바이시(Dubai, UAE) 2016 올림픽이 열리는리우데자 네이루(Rio de Janeiro)도 대중교통을 지원하게 되었다네요.

이와 더불어 모바일 구글맵 3.2용으로 심비안, 윈도 모바일, 블랙베리, 모토롤라 드로이드(DROID) 등에서 대중교통을 지원하게 되었었는데, 이번엔 팜프리(Palm Pre)에서도 대중교통을 지원하게 되었다는 소식도 있습니다.

http://maps.google.com/transit에 들어가보면 구글 대중교통이 지원하는 지역을 확인할 수 있습니다. 우리나라는 전국을 지원한다고 나와있고요. 흠... 근데, 언제 자가용용 길찾기를 지원할 건지...

구글 사용자지도 제작자 베스트 : 미하이(Featured Map Maker: Mihai) : 11월 4일

구글 지도작성기(Map Maker)를 이용하여 지도를 입력하는 분 소개 글인데요, 필리핀의 라오넬, 파키스탄의 파라즈, 자브란에 이어 세번째로 루마니아의 미하이씨입니다.

루마니아는 불과 3달전인 8월말에 지도작성기가 오픈되었는데, 그동안 엄청난 양의 데이터를 입력한 모양입니다. 아래는 루마니아의 부쿠레슈티란 도시의 2개월간 변화모습입니다.

지도작성기(Map Maker)는 대부분 구글맵에 들어 있는 위성영상을 디지타이징하는 방법으로 도로를 입력하는데, 루마니아의 미하이씨는 위성영상이 잘 안보이는 지역을 직접 GPS를 가지도 다니며 기록해서 이를 입력하기도 했답니다. 대단한 정성인데... 이 분은 루마니아 관광사이트를 운영하는 분이라니.. 완전히 순수한 목적은 아닐 수도 있겠네요~ ㅎㅎ

베를린 지역 과거 영상 데이터베이스 추가(Historical Imagery Updates for Berlin ) : 11월 5일

구글어스 5.0에 과거 영상 보기 기능이 추가되었습니다. 독일에서 1945년부터 1953년까지의 베를린 영상이 추가되었다네요.

아래는 우리나라 서울 지역을 과거영상 보기 기능으로 살펴본 것입니다. 그러나, 아래에 보이는 영상들은 모두 2000년 이후의 사진들 뿐입니다. 실질적으로 이때부터 고해상도 영상이 등장했기 때문입니다.

현재로서는 그 이전에 촬영된 영상을 보기는 힘듭니다. 국토지리정보원이나 서울시에서 촬영한 항공사진을 신청해야 하는데, 절차가 상당히 까다롭기 때문입니다. 그리고... 현재 보관되어 있는 사진은 지상좌표가 일치하지 않기 때문에 지도와 맞춰보기도 힘들고요.

그래도 언젠가는 다음이나 네이버같은 포털에서 이러한 항공사진을 입수해서 과거영상 서비스를 하게 될겁니다. 아마도 서비스가 되면 서울 을지로를 다녔다는 전차 노선도 볼 수 있겠고... 난지도가 진짜 섬이었다는 것도 볼 수 있을 겁니다. 그날이 빨리 오길 기대합니다.

구글어스 11월 영상 추가/갱신(November Imagery Update)

11월 3일자 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식입니다. 구글어스(Google Earth) 및 구글맵(Google Maps)에 사용되는 위성영상 및 항공사진을 추가 또는 갱신했다는 내용입니다.

그런데, 이번부터는 위성영상 추가 관련 몇가지가 달라진다고 합니다.

첫번째는 위성영상의 추가/갱신이 빨라진다고 합니다. 원래 작년까지는 2개월마다 한번씩 갱신되었고, 올해 초부터는 1개월마다 한번씩 추가/갱신 되었는데, 이번부터는 이 주기를 더 줄인다고 합니다. 그러면 보름마다 한번 정도는 갱신 소식이 나올 수 있겠네요.

다음으로, 영상이 추가될 때마다 어떤 지역이 갱신되었는지를 퀴즈형식으로 찾아보도록 했었는데, 이제는 그런 방법을 아예 버리고, 아래처럼 구글어스 플러그인으로 추가지역을 직접 보여주기로 했답니다. (우리나라는 갱신되지 않았네요.) 이 KML 파일 을 돌려서 직접 확인하실 수도 있습니다.

이와 같이 퀴즈를 없애는 대신, 사용자들이 직접 새로 추가된 멋진 영상을 찾아서 트위터로 올리는 방식으로 바꾸었답니다. 즉, 갱신된 지역중에서 다른 사람들에게 보여주고 싶은 영상을 발견하면, EarthURL.org 를 통해서 주소를 가져오고, 이를 #GEarthIMG 라는 해시태그를 달아서 올리면 되는 방식입니다. 일 주일쯤 뒤에 구글에서 정리해 줄 모양입니다.

이번엔 우리나라 지역이 업데이트되지 않아서 직접 해 볼 수는 없고, 대신 EarthURL.org 로 위치를 공유하는 건 나름 재미있는 것 같습니다. 먼저 EarthURL.org 에 접속하면 아래와 같은 안내문이 나타나는데 클릭하며 사라집니다.

그 다음엔 아래와 같은 화면이 나타나는데, 직접 위치를 찾거나, 윗쪽 창에서 주소를 입력하는 등의 방식으로 위치를 찾은 후, 아래에 있는 주소를 복사해서 쓰거나 바로 트위터에 올릴 수 있습니다.

이와 같은 방식으로 만들어진 주소(http://earthurl.org/#06_1kHmq5mYAmmiBAAA) 는 구글맵에서 생성한 주소보다 아주 짧습니다. 그래서 트위터와 같이 메시지 길이가 정해져 있는 경우엔 매우 유용합니다. 그리고 아래의 링크를 클릭해 보시면 바로 구글어스 플러그인이 작동되기 때문에 위치를 확인하는데도 쓸만 한 것 같습니다.

그래도 구글어스 플러그인을 실행시키면 아무래도 구글맵을 실행시키는 것보다 시간이 많이 걸리기 때문에, (맨처음 실행시키면 플러그인을 설치하는 점도 불편...) 구글맵 기반으로 짧은 주소를 만들어주는 게 더 유용할 것 같습니다.

Having worked on updates to Google Earth/Maps imagery for some time, I've always enjoyed seeing how the world changes through our regular updates. But, I've wanted to see them more often. Today, I'm happy to announce that we're increasing the frequency of our updates to bring you the world's freshest and most complete imagery.

As a part of this announcement, we're also making some changes to the way that we tell you about new imagery. We'll continue to publish a blog post for our updates but instead of our regular 'Where in the World' quizzes, we're going to start to embed a web-based Google Earth view of the updates in our blog post (like we have below), and continue to link to the KML file for viewing inside the Google Earth application.

In addition, you can share your cool new imagery finds with us using Twitter! After looking at the updates in the viewer below, tweet your cool finds and add the #GEarthIMG hashtag to your tweets. For some added fun, point the Twittersphere to the precise location using EarthURL.org. In a few weeks time, we'll follow things up with a round-up of tweets from those of you using the hashtag and share them with all of you. We'll also be re-tweeting some of your finds from @googleearth.

SK C&C, 서울시 전역 3D 모델 전자동 제작

SK C&C에서 작년부터 현실세계를 그대로 모사하는 미러월드(Mirror World)와, 세컨드라이프와 같이 상상속의 세계를 만드는 가상세계(Virtual World)를 혼합한, 새로운 개념의 3D 솔루션을 개발하고 있습니다.

저는 이런 저런 경로로 직간접적으로 들어왔지만, 그동안 SK C&C 분들이 원하지 않았고, 또 뚜렷한 성과품도 없어서 언급을 자제해 왔습니다. 그런데, 이번에 서울시 전역을 완전 자동으로 3D 모델로 제작하고 이를 공개한다고 합니다.

아래가 이번에 SK C&C에서 제작한 3D 모델입니다. 클릭해 보면 큰 그림을 보실 수 있습니다.

이번 11월 5일 대전에서 열리는 국방신기술소개회(방위산업청 주관)에서 발표를 한다는데, 자세한 일정과 내용은 아래의 파일을 참고하시기 바랍니다. SK C&C에서는 "분산처리 기법을 활용한 준 실시간 전자동 3차원 도시모형 생성기술"이라는 제목으로 발표를 하는데, 다른 회사들이 발표 혹은 전시하는 것들도 재미있는 것들이 있네요.

이번에 SK C&C에서 개발한 3D 모델은 수직 항공사진을 사용하였습니다. 다음 스카이뷰를 촬영할 때 사용한 울트라캠이라는 장비로 촬영했다고 하네요. 건물 옆면 텍스처를 입히는데는 원래 경사사진이 좋지만, 항공사진의 가장자리 부분을 사용하면 어느 정도는 건물 옆면의 텍스처를 입힐 수 있습니다. 대신 더 많이 날라야 하지만요. 경사사진 촬영장비인 픽토메트리(Pictometry)를 보유하고 있는 중앙항업과는 협상이 잘 안되었다는 모양입니다.

어쨌든 항공사진을 사용하여 서울시 전역의 정사사진과, 높이(DEM) 그리고 80만 동의 건물에 대한 3D 모델까지 모두 자동으로 처리했는데 약 두 달 정도 소요되었다고 합니다. 지상 기준점은 사용하지 않았는데, 위치 정확도를 정확히 체크해 보지는 않았지만, 상대적인 위치는 1픽셀 이내로 매우 정확하다는 이야기들 다른 분으로부터 들었습니다.

아래는 제가 담당자로부터 받은 파워포인트 파일중 일부분을 보여드리는 것입니다. 입력자료에 레이저(LIDAR)가 있다는 것. 그리고 준실시간 분산처리... 라는 말이 눈에 띄네요.

이러한 3D 모델 제작기술은 마이크로소프트(Microsoft)의 3D 모델 제작 기술과 거의 유사합니다. 자세한 내용은 구글과 마이크로소프트의 3D 도시 비교라는 글을 읽어보시면 됩니다만, 마이크로소프트는 기본적으로 모든 가용한 자료를 모두 사용해서 완전 자동으로 3D 모델을 제작하고 있습니다.

제가 예전에 소개시켜 드린 C3 Technologies에서도 경사사진을 사용하여 3D 모델을 자동 생성합니다. 면적 30만 평방, 인구 20만의 도시를 3일만에 처리할 수 있다고 하죠. 하지만, 자세히 들여다보면 건물 경계선이 무너지는 등 3D 모델이 완벽하지 않습니다.

또... 새한 항업에서는 PLW Modelworks라는 소프트웨어를 도입하여 반자동 방식으로 서울시 3D 모델을 제작하고 있습니다. 사람이 직접 작업하기 때문에 비용은 상대적으로 많이 들지만, 품질 자체는 정말 뛰어납니다.

그런데, 제 생각으로는 마이크로소프트의 기술은 아주 세밀한 부분까지 정교한 모델을, 그것도 자동으로 생성한다는 점에서 다른 기술에 비해 매우 뛰어나다고 생각합니다. 이번에 SK C&C에서 개발 한 자동처리기술이 어느 정도 수준인지 정확히 확인해 보지는 못했지만, 제가 들은 바에 따르면 상당히 근접한 수준이라고 하니 아주 기대가 됩니다.

이번 SK C&C의 기술 공개는 제가 언급한 포털 지도 전쟁에 또 다른 한가지 변수가 등장한 것이라고 생각됩니다. 네이버와 다음에서는 전국 항공사진을 깔고 각각 공중/지상의 파노라마 사진으로 창과 방패 삼아 치열한 싸움을 벌이고 있었는데 갑자기 그 옆에서 총으로 무장한 침입자가 등장했다... 이런 느낌이죠.

물론 SK C&C는 포털이 아니기 때문에 다음지도와 네이버지도에 직접적으로 영향을 미치지는 않을 것 같습니다. 적어도 SK M&C의 도로지도, SK Communications의 싸이월드 지도를 모두 통합하기 전까지는요. 그리고 솔직히 인터넷 사업이 콘텐츠가 훌륭하다고 하루아침에 향방이 바뀌는 일은 없으니, 포털의 역학관계는 크게 영향을 받지 않겠죠.

그래도... 네이버와 다음은 3차원 서비스에 대해 다시한번 심각하게 고려하기 시작할테고... 3D 모델 제작기술을 가진 업체들은 긴장할테고... 대규모 투자를 생각했었던 국토해양부에서는 새롭게 사업전반을 재구성해야 하는 게 아닌가... 하는 생각이 드네요.

그래서라도... 이번 목요일에 대전에 꼭 내려가 보고 싶은데... 저는 목요일 아침까지 출장이라서 저는 가보기 힘들 것 같습니다. 정말 아쉽네요... ㅠㅠ

구글맵 부동산정보 업그레이드(More, more, more real estate in Google Maps)

7월 29일자 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식입니다. 구글맵에 들어 있는 부동산 검색기능을 강화했다는 내용입니다.

구글맵 부동산 검색기능은 작년 5월 처음 추가되었고, 지난 7월에 기능이 개선되었는데, 또다시 기능 개선소식입니다.

첫번째... 예전에는 검색옵션으로 "Real Estate"로 지정을 한 후, "for rent in San francisco"와 같이 검색을 수행해야만 부동산 정보를 볼 수 있었는데, 이번에는 "더보기(More)..." 속에서 클릭만 하면 되게 되었다는 것입니다. 실제로 만져보면 접근성이 훨씬 좋아졌습니다.

다음으로... 예전에는 판매/구매 정보만 볼 수 있었는데, 이번에는 임대 정보도 추가되었다고 합니다. 아래는 예전 글에 캡처해둔 그림인데, 아무리 찾아도 임대(rent)에 정보를 볼 수는 없었네요. (저는 원래 있었는줄 알았습니다.)

그리고... 이제까지는 부동산 검색이 미국, 오스트랠리아, 뉴질랜드만 지원되었는데, 인도도 추가되었다는 내용도 있습니다.

흠... 구글맵 부동산 정보가 점점 모양새를 갖추어 가는 중인 것 같습니다. 우리나라의 포털의 부동산 사이트(예: 다음부동산)은 그야말로 포털임에 반해, 구글의 부동산정보는 정말 간단한 검색... 어떤 쪽이 더 좋다고 판단내리기는 힘들 것 같네요~~

Since we announced the ability to see lots of real estate listings directly on Google Maps back in July, we've been working hard to make it even easier to use. As we've added new features and updated Google Maps, with things like brand new high-resolution Street View imagery or detailed map data, Google Maps has become an even more useful tool for online real estate searching. Here are a couple of things you can look out for next time you visit.

First of all, we've made it easier to find real estate listings. Now, you can simply select "Real Estate" from the 'More' button on the top right of any Google Map to discover listings. From there, it's a simple matter to refine your search using the left hand panel - price, bedrooms, bathrooms, and so on. Of course, you can still pan the map to search for the perfect neighborhood and it'll automatically update with more listings.

We've also added the ability to search for rental listings in the US. You can now find places for rent in New York or one bedrooms in San Francisco for rent simply by turning on the Real Estate layer via the 'More' button and selecting some refinements.

You'll also notice that Google Maps is now showing even more information about an area as you pan around and zoom in. There are small icons on the map showing the names and location of businesses and prominent features of the neighborhood. This means that during your property search, you'll be able to tell at a glance just exactly what shops can be found down the road from where you're looking, all without typing!

You can now find real estate in cities and towns across the US, Australia, New Zealand and India.

Of course, these aren't the only resources available for your new home search. You can use Street View on Google Maps to check out the neighborhood before driving to an open house; use driving directions to find out exactly how to get there; and transit information to work out what your new commute might be if you went ahead and moved house.

Also, if you're in the real estate industry and want to provide listings to be seen in Google Maps, it's really easy to get started.

구글맵 내비게이션 - 공짜!! 단, 미국에서만~~(Google Maps Navigation comes to Android 2.0)

10월 28일자 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식입니다. 오늘은 완전 쇼킹한 뉴스네요. 구글에서 구글맵 내비게이션(Google Maps Navigation)을 제공한다는 소식입니다. 그것도 공짜랍니다!!!

현재 구글맵 내비게이션을 사용할 수 있는 건 아니고요, 안드로이드 2.0 을 탑재한 스마트폰... 그러니까 금명간 발표예정인 모토롤라(Motorola)의 드로이드(Droid)에 사용하게 될 예정입니다.

구글맵 내비게이션은 기본적으로 인터넷기반입니다. 그러니까...지도나 업소정보 등 모든 정보를 인터넷에서 다운로드 받는 것 같습니다. 그래서, 컴퓨터에서 사용하는 구글맵의 기능을 거의 100% 모두 사용할 수 있습니다.

구글 모바일 블로그를 읽어보시면 7가지 장점을 제시하고 있습니다. 요약하면 다음과 같습니다.

최신의 지도 및 지역정보

말씀드린 것처럼, 지도와 지역정보를 항상 다운로드 받는 형식이기 때문에 가장 최신의 데이터가 유지됩니다. 업그레이드가 필요없겠죠.

평상어(영어)로 검색

검색어는 구글맵과 동일합니다. 따라서 어떠한 검색어를 넣더라도 검색이 됩니다. 포털에서 검색하는 것과 내비게이션에서 검색하는 것을 비교해 보면, 얼마나 편리할 지 상상이 가실 겁니다. 예를 들어 내비게이션에서는 철자가 틀리면 전혀 검색이 안되지만...

음성검색

모바일 구글맵에서 지원되는 음성검색을 그냥 사용할 수 있습니다. 내비게이션을 켜고 목적지를 말하면 그냥 안내받을 수 있습니다. 얼마나 인식률이 높은지는 잘 모르겠지만... 비디오에 있는 예제를 보면 꽤 쓸만할 것 같네요.

실시간 교통정보

구글맵에서 제공되는 실시간 교통정보를 볼 수 있습니다.

경로를 따라서 검색

경로를 설정한 후에 검색을 하면, 그 경로상에 가까운 업소들이 검색된다는 것 같습니다. 이건 새로운 기능이겠네요. 아니다... 구글맵에 이런 기능이 있었나? 잘 모르겠네요~

위성영상

구글맵에서 볼 수 있는 위성영상도 볼 수 있습니다.

스트리트뷰 영상

스트리트뷰 영상도 볼 수 있다고 합니다. 스트리트뷰 상태에서도 경로 안내가 됩니다. <- 이 기능 상당히 멋집니다!

아래 그림을 눌러보시면 구글맵 내비게이션의 기능을 보실 수 있습니다.

정말 멋진 기능이 모두 들어가 있습니다. @estima7님은 가민(Garmin), 톰톰(TomTom)등의 주식이 거의 20%이상 폭락했다는 소식을 전해주셨는데, 정말 그럴만 하다는 느낌을 받으실 겁니다.

사실 현재까지의 미국내 내비게이션을 보면... 상당히 꾸졌거든요. 크기도 아주 작고, 기능도 아주 간단합니다. 위에서 설명한 구글맵 내비게이션의 7가지 장점중 어떤 한가지도 만족하는 내비게이션은 거의 없다고 보입니다.

예를 들어 실시간 교통정보같은 경우에도... 별도로 가입하지 않으면 사용할 수 없는 것이고... 위성영상이라면... 전세계의 위성영상을 내비게이션에서 볼 수 있다는 건 사실 말이 안되는 것이고요.

다만... 이 구글맵 내비게이션은 현재 버라이즌 + 모토롤라 드로이드 에서만 사용가능하며, 당연히 미국에서만 사용할 수 있습니다.

우리나라에선 불가능합니다. 이유는? 여러가지가 있습니다. 제일 먼저... 구글맵 내비게이션을 사용하려면 데이터를 무한대로 사용할 수 있는 제도가 있어야 합니다. 예를 들어 위성영상까지 계속 다운로드 받으면서 운행하고 다니면... 한달에 몇 GB는 훌쩍 넘길테고, 그러면 우리나라의 데이터 요금제를 생각했을 때, 아마도 전세칸 하나정도 날릴 만 할 겁니다. ㅎㅎ

다음으로 더 중요한 것은... 미국의 구글맵 데이터는 구글 자신의 소유입니다. 텔레아틀라스나 나브텍같은 도로지도 전문회사의 지도를 사용했다면, 아마도 엄청난 사용료를 요구했을 겁니다. 내비게이션 도로지도 시장을 깍아먹는 셈이니까요. 어쨌든... 구글 코리아에서 우리나라 지도를 먼저 만들어야만 구글맵 내비게이션이 나올 수 있을 겁니다.

아무튼 그렇습니다. 아주 충격적이면서도 아주 재미있는 소식이네요. 우리나라 포털들이나, 도로지도 회사들도 나름 대책이 필요할 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다.

우리는 2005년 구글맵 서비스를 개시하고, 그해 말 모바일 구글맵(Google Maps for mobile)을 통하여 사용자분들이 언제라도 지도와 경로안내를 사용할 수 있게 제공하게 하였습니다. 그리고 몇년동안 우리는 내위치(My Location), 실시간 교통정보, 위성영상, 스트리트뷰 등 여러가지 새로운 기능을 데스탑용 구글맵 및 모바일 구글맵에 계속하여 추가해 왔습니다. 그러나, 이제까지 경로 안내기능은 리스트로만 제공되어, 실제 운전을 할때는 그다지 유용하지 않았습니다. 지금까지는요!

구글맵 색상 등 디자인 변경(Evolving the look of Google Maps)

10월 23일자 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식입니다. 구글맵의 색상, 도로 두께 등 디자인이 변경되었다는 내용입니다.

예를 들어 동네 길의 두께를 줄여서 가독성을 높였고, 색상을 최적화해서 대중교통 이나 검색 결과 등의 다른 콘텐츠와 충돌을 줄였다고 합니다. 그리고... 하이브리드 모드에서 도로 선의 경계를 진하게 바꾸었다는 내용도 나옵니다.

아래는 아래 원문에 있는 예중에서 한가지 가져온 것입니다. 왼쪽이 예전 오른쪽이 개선된 모습인데, 하이브리드 모드에서 길의 경계선을 강하게 표현하고, 소로도 보다 잘 보이도록 바꾸었음을 알 수 있습니다.

아래는 또다른 예입니다. 도로지도 모드에서는 작은 길들의 색을 약하게 만들었군요. 아마도 처음에는 한가지 표시방법 뿐이 없었는데, 경우에 따라서 표현 방법을 여러가지로 바꾼 듯 합니다.

사실 지도의 디자인은 아주 까다로운 주제입니다. 저같이 미적감각이 별로 없는 사람에겐 특히 힘든 문제고요. 아주 다양한 상황에서 복잡하지도, 허전하지도 않게, 그리고 정말 필요한 정보만을 예쁘게 보여준다는 것은 예술과 과학의 결합이라고나 할까요. 암튼 제 수준을 넘는 내용이라서 이만 줄입니다.

그나저나... 구글맵이 처음 서비스를 시작한지 겨우 4.7년 전이라고 하네요. 생각보다 얼마 되지 않았네요~~

Today the Google Maps team is rolling out a number of refinements to the look and feel of our maps, the biggest such changes since we first launched about 4.7 years ago. In that time we've been steadily adding details like walkways, address labels, bus stops, new country coverage, and improved satellite imagery, but the look of the map hasn't changed much.

Today's changes are intended to keep the same information-rich map while making it easier to pick out the information that is most useful. The changes affect both the 'Map' and 'Hybrid' styles, and include numerous refinements to colour, density, typography, and road styling worldwide. For example, in map view, local and arterial roads have been narrowed at medium zooms to improve legibility, and the overall colours have been optimized to be easier on the eye and conflict less with other things (such as traffic, transit lines and search results) that we overlay onto the map. Hybrid roads have gained a crisp outline to make them easier to follow, and the overall look is now closer to an augmented satellite view instead of a simple overlay.

In some areas the changes are obvious, while in others they are quite subtle. But overall we hope you'll agree they're a nice improvement. Let's take a quick world tour to see some of these changes in action...

Taking a look at a far zoom of the area around my hometown London, notice the improved readability and density of the roads in the hybrid view. The motorways are easier to follow, and the A-roads are surfaced earlier:

Further north and more zoomed in still, the small town of Portinscale in England's beautiful Lake District shows the benefits of displaying increased road density. Local roads, important in this context, are now visible:

Jumping west across the Atlantic to San Francisco and switching to map view demonstrates the changes in colour and font treatment. All the same information is maintained on the map, but there is more contrast between background detail such as local roads, and important orientation signals like neighbourhoods and major arterial roads:

Heading south to Brasilia illustrates the advantages of the newly optimized road widths. The thinner treatment at this zoom makes it much easier to pick out fine detail in the complex local road shapes:

Heading northwest across the Pacific, Beijing sees some dramatic changes: the subway lines are coloured to fit local convention, the text is aligned with the streets, and the overall colour scheme is tuned to be more harmonious:

And finally, completing the journey where we started, note the finer road widths, cleaner rail lines, and less visually heavy colour scheme in London:

블랙베리폰, 구글맵 레이어 기능 지원 (Layers come to Google Maps for BlackBerry)

10월 22일자 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식입니다. 블랙베리(BlackBerry) 폰에 모바일 구글맵 버전 3.2를 지원하게 되었다는 내용입니다.

이로써 블랙베리폰에서도 구글맵의 레이어 기능을 지원하게 되었다고 하네요.

즉, 기본적인 지도위에 실시간 교통정보, 위키피디아, 대중교통 등을 지원하게 되었다고 합니다. 아래 원문에 있는 비디오를 보니까 구글 친구찾기인 래티튜드(Latitude)도 지원하네요.

제가 더욱 중요하게 생각하는 건 내지도(My Map) 기능을 지원하게 되었다는 것입니다. 즉, 예를 들어 어디로 여행을 떠나기 전에 여행정보등을 내지도로 만들어 두면, 언제든지 그 정보를 꺼내 볼 수 있다는 것이죠.

그런데... 이 막강한 기능이 아이폰에는 아직 지원되지 않습니다. 원래 안드로이드폰에서는 이 기능이 지원되었고, 지난 7월에는 윈도모바일 과 심비안 S60을 지원하였는데, 이번에 블랙베리까지 합치는 거의 모든 스마트폰을 지원하게 되었지만, 유독 아이폰은 지원하지 않는 것입니다.

제가 지난 7월에 글을 쓸 때, 구글과 애플이 사이가 나빠진 게 아니냐... 라는 글로 마무리를 했었는데, 그 이후 구글의 에릭 슈미츠 사장이 애플의 이사를 사임하고, 인터넷전화 등 구글의 몇가지 응용프로그램을 애플에서 승인을 안해줬다고 해서 분쟁이 발생하는 등, 이제는 거의 돌아올 수 없는 강을 건넌 것 같습니다.

게다가 얼마전 애플에서 도로지도회사를 인수했으니... 아마도 아이폰용 모바일 구글맵 버전 3.2는 아직도 한참 기다려야 하지 않을까... 하는 생각이 듭니다.

We're excited to announce that version 3.2 of Google Maps for mobile is now available for BlackBerry. This release contains many of the same features we recently launched on Windows Mobile and S60, including Layers.

Layers make it easy to view various types of information on your map and are especially helpful in situations when you're traveling somewhere new. For example, you can turn on the Wikipedia layer to read entries about nearby places, then use the transit lines layer to help map out a route. Or you can use the My Maps feature of Google Maps to create a collection of places you're planning to visit on your trip and then use Google Maps for mobile to access it from the road. You can also turn on the Google Latitude layer to see your friends' locations.

My coworker Mat is a big fan of Layers and made the below video to show you how he uses the feature. Check out the video, and get the latest version of Google Maps for your phone by visiting m.google.com/maps from your phone's browser.

구글어스 영상추가 해답 - 만주 지역 갱신(Where in the World is...(Answers))

10월 22일자 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식입니다. 며칠전 구글어스에 영상이 추가되었다는 소식을 전해드렸는데, 오늘은 그때 나온 퀴즈에 대한 해답과 갱신지역 리스트입니다.

이번 영상 갱신에는 우리나라 지역은 전혀 변화가 없네요. 다만, 만주지역, 특히 백두산의 위성영상이 갱신되었다는 점이 특히 눈에 띄네요. 자세한 내용을 보시려면 이 KML을 실행시켜 보시면 됩니다.

흠... 아래는 이 KML을 구글맵(Google Maps)에서 실행시킨 뒤, 이를 삽입시켜본 모습입니다. 아래 지도에서 마우스를 드래그하면 직접 전세계를 확인하실 수 있습니다.

10월 21일자 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식입니다. 지난 6월에 시작된 구글 스케치업 대피소 디자인 콘테스트의 당선작을 알리는 내용입니다.

구글 스케치업 대피소 디자인 콘테스트는 올해 개관 50주년을 맞는 구겐하임 박물관을 설계한 프랭크 로이드 라이트(Frank Lloyd Wright)를 기념하여 구글과 구겐하임 박물관이 공동으로 개최한 디자인 콘테스트입니다.

수상작은 두가지가 있습니다. 먼저 인기상(The People's Prize)은 프랭크 로이드 라이트 건축학교(the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture) 재학생들이 10의 예비후보를 고르고, 콘테스트 웹사이트에서 투표를 하여 선정한 당선작입니다.

심사단 상(The Juried Prize)은 건축 디자인 전문가 패널(panel) 분들께서 모든 콘테스트 참가작중에서 선정한 당선작이고요.

아래는 인기상을 받은 CBS – Cork Block Shelter 입니다.

아래 작품은 심사단 상을 받은 SeaShelter입니다.

상을 받은 팀은 뉴욕으로 초청을 받아, 구겐하임 박물관과 뉴욕 구글 사무실, 기타 여러가지 박물관을 방문할 예정이라고 하네요.

Earlier this year, we teamed up with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum to launch the Design It: Shelter Competition. People all over the world were invited to use Google SketchUp to design small buildings and submit them for consideration. We received over 600 entries from 68 countries – the level of participation was astounding. You can check out all the entries on the Guggenheim website.

Two prizes were offered: the People's Prize and the Juried Prize. To determine the winner of the People's Prize, students from the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture winnowed down the entries to a list of ten finalists. Visitors to the Guggenheim website could vote for their favorite; the shelter with the most votes won. A jury of seven experts selected the winner of the Juried Prize.

아마존 수루이족의 역경을 담은 KML 투어(The Surui on the internet: "Trading Bows & Arrows for Laptops")

10월 21일자 구글 LatLong 블로그 소식입니다. 어제 브라질 수루이(Surui)족 추장인 알미르 수루이(Almir Surui)님이 바이오니어즈(Bioneers) 컨퍼런스에 참석했다는 소식을 전해드렸는데, 그에 관한 상세한 내용입니다. (참고로 원문은 추장님이 직접 작성한 것입니다.)

지난주에 캘리포니아 산 라페엘(San Rafael)에서 제 20회 바이오니어즈 컨퍼런스가 열렸고, 여기에 다양한 원주민이나 관련 기관들, 비영리기관들이 참여했었는데, 알미르 추장님은 구글어스 아웃리치(Google Earth Outreach)팀과 함께 “활을 내리고 랩탑을(Trading Bows and Arrows for Laptops)” 구글어스 투어를 선보였다고 합니다.

이 구글어스 투어를 돌리면 1960년대로부터 현재에 이르기 까지 수루이족이 어떻게 외부 문명세계와 인연을 맺고 고난을 받았으며, 다시 어떻게 회복되었는지를 보실 수 있습니다. 맨 첫부분을 보시면 처음 인연을 맺었을 때 5,000 명이었던 인구가 2년만에 290명으로 줄어들었다는 내용이 나옵니다.

Among the Surui tribe of the state of Rondonia in Brazil, a gift is given when a gift is received. This is how our Bioneers experience ended – with an exchange of gifts between Māori tribal representative, Wikuki Kingi of New Zealand, and myself. Presented with a fertility amulet carved out of whale bone, I, Chief Almir Surui, responded by offering a necklace of traditional beads from around my neck.

This past weekend, at the 20th anniversary of the Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, California indigenous representatives, socially-conscious entrepreneurs and foundations, as well as other green-minded participants, gathered for an exchange of ideas to discuss innovative solutions to the social issues that matter in the “new” green revolution. Honored to be a part of this forum, I and my colleagues, Rebecca Moore, Manager of Google Earth Outreach, and Vasco van Roosmalen, Brazil Director of the Amazon Conservation Team, unveiled the “Trading Bows and Arrows for Laptops” Google Earth tour. Our goal with this tour is to tell the world about my people, the Surui, our struggles and our successes, and how our lessons-learned can contribute toward a more sustainable world for everyone. This tour uses Google Earth to share the history and realities of the Surui people and our contributions to preserving the world’s largest rainforest – the Amazon.

In September 1969 – only 40 years ago - the first white men entered our forests. With great hope, we welcomed these visitors in order to build peaceful relations with the outside world. However, our hope for the future was met with great tragedy. Just two years after first contact, the Surui population had dropped from 5,000 people to only 290. Not only did we lose our people to new diseases, our culture was threatened with extinction as a result of the deaths of our elders. At 17, I assumed a leadership role and am now looking to the outside world with renewed hope.

The illegal logging of the rainforest in our territory began by outsiders two decades ago, and still continues today. With help from the Amazon Conservation Team, Kaninde, Google Earth Outreach and other partners, we are bringing the Surui story to the world so that we can strengthen our ability to protect and sustainably manage the 600,000 acres of threatened rainforest which is our home.
