Keeping Them Warm

My three-year-old daughter likes to play out in the snow, but I hate to see her mittens come up and the snow and wind get to her wrists. Today I cut the ribbed cuffs off an old pair of my socks and pulled them on over her mittens and up over the cuff of her snowsuit. It gave her a chance to play without getting cold!

Looking for Heat Loss

After the first snowfall of the season, my father noticed that snow in one spot on the roof of his house melted before the sun hit it. He asked me to investigate. Crawling through the attic, I discovered an opening through which I could see light and feel a warm draft from the basement. It was the result of shoddy construction. For several years, Dad had been heating the whole outdoors with heat from the basement. A couple of patches and a layer of insulation later, Dad is looking forward to lower heating bills from now on.

Flannel and Fleece Fan

I have found that flannel sheets on our bed are great and polar fleece blankets and clothing is very warm. I bought remnants of fleece fabric that were blanket sized and didn't have to hem them since fleece doesn't unravel. I got three nice sized blankets for just a few dollars this way. We like to use these for covers while watching TV in the evenings. I found a flannel duvet cover for our comforter, so we really feel snuggly even without extra blankets.

Checking Deals

I belong to several of the deal sites, such as Groupon, Living Social, etc. One thing I am finding out is that these don't always have the cheapest price when it comes to their "Goods" section. Now I always compare something I am thinking of buying by checking the price of it on eBay or other websites that might also have the item. Several times I have found it to be less expensive by quite a bit on the other sites than on the deal sites.

Just Say "No"!

Each year on January 1st, I begin a "no consuming" policy. Of course, I still need non-negotiable items, such as gasoline, food, electricity, etc. But I play a game with myself to see how far I can go into the new year without buying one unnecessary item. I have turned it into a game I enjoy and have added nicely to my savings over the years. This year, I intend to add cleaning out the pantry and freezer by planning meals for the week using what I have and only buying fresh fruit, dairy, etc.

Organizing Recipes

Pick one workable format for your recipes that works for you, whether it's all on computer, in a recipe box, or in a binder. I buy lined and unlined 3 x 5 index cards. When I find a recipe in a magazine, I cut it out and tape it to the card, using the back if needed. On my word processing program, I have an index card size template, so when I find a recipe online, I can paste it onto the template and print it onto an index card. Or I rewrite it by hand on a lined card, which only takes a few minutes. I buy tab dividers to separate and label my own categories. I never found a recipe box big enough to hold all of my recipe cards, so my husband put wood dividers into a kitchen drawer. I now have quite a large "recipe box." The recipes stay clean, and I have easy access to them.

Natural Facial Care

1 egg white
1 teaspoon cornstarch

Combine ingredients until stiff peaks form. Apply to a clean face and let dry. Rinse. If you have a slant board, lie on this while your mask is drying. It will look like you've had a mini-facelift when you're done.

Easy Clothes Softener

A great way to soften and deodorize clothes is to pour one teaspoon of baking soda into a liquid softener dispenser (the ball type that opens during the rinse cycle) and then slowly pour vinegar up to the fill line. It will bubble but not overflow if the vinegar isn't poured too fast. Clothes will soften and be free of odor without perfumes and chemicals.

If you really like the softener fragrance, store cut pieces of sponge in a clean glass jar filled with liquid fabric softener. Squeeze out the excess liquid, so that it doesn't drip and throw the sponge into the dryer with the wet clothes like a dryer sheet. When the clothes are dry, just drop it back into the jar to use in the next load.

Soup's On!

I find that making soup is so cheap. It tastes great, and the house smells wonderful while I'm making it. I buy a chicken, cut off the legs to save for a later meal, and then proceed to clean the inside out really well. I fill up a large pot with cold water, immerse the cleaned chicken, and let it come to a boil. Then I turn down the heat and skim off all the foam that sets up on top. Once that is done, I add a sliced carrot or two, a whole onion, sliced celery, a lot of parsley, and salt to taste. Then I let it simmer for three to four hours!

I have a lot of soup to use up during the week in the refrigerator, or I divide it up into containers and freeze for later use. My little ones do not like too much chicken in their soup, so I use the cooked breast to make another meal. I get a lot of meals out of a chicken.

Quick Bed

Sometimes my 12-year-old daughter gives up her bedroom for guests and wants to sleep in my bedroom. After considering fold-out chairs, sofa beds and yoga mats, I came up with a no-cost solution.

First, I lay a bath towel on the floor next to the wall in my room. Next, I remove the seat cushions from the two easy chairs in my living room. Then I fold a thick blanket in thirds and lay it across the cushions. I cover all this with a regular single bed sheet and add pillows and a blanket. I end up with an extra bed for free, and my daughter loves this cozy bed. The next morning, I take the "bed" apart and put everything back in its original place. There is no extra storage space required for this freebie.

Cat Litter

Clumping cat litter is expensive compared to clay litter, but it sure is nice. I mix some of the cheaper clay litter into the clumping brand. It works as well and saves money.

Controlled Dispensers

My kids are always using too much shampoo, conditioner, and body soap. I decided to put the soaps into empty liquid hand soap bottles. Now I do not have to buy that stuff as often.

Cleaning Hardened Spills

Whenever I have a hardened spill on the floor or counter, I microwave a half cup of water and sometimes add dishwashing liquid. I pour enough hot water over it just to cover the spill. Then I leave it until it's cool enough to wipe up. As another option, I dip an old toothbrush in the hot water to scrub crevices or other tight areas. I love this simple trick. I hope you do, too!

Homemade Cream Soups

I don't know why people use canned soup for recipes. It is loaded with salt, and it's expensive. A cream sauce is easy to make! For one cup of sauce, melt two tablespoons butter, whisk in two tablespoons of flour until well blended, and then stir in one cup of milk, broth, or a combination of the two. Cook on medium heat, whisking constantly, until thick. Add salt, pepper, paprika, or melted cheese to taste.

Inexpensive Food Gifts

As a stay-at-home mom, I often seem to have more time to bake than the teachers in my children's schools do. I put together a gift basket of brownies in different flavors and jars of spiced tea or my homemade cocoa mix. I always put a basket together for the gals in the office as they are often forgotten. This year, I plan to add a cookie mix in a jar. They can bake at their leisure during the holidays. The teachers have always loved this gift. I am sure not to bake ahead and freeze, so they have the option to freeze the goodies if they need to. Several have commented to me on how nice it was to have something ready to serve holiday guests.

Protecting Your Table Top

We recently purchased a folding banquet table to use when serving our holiday meals, but we needed something to go under the tablecloth to protect the plastic top from hot dishes. A padded aluminum car window shade worked wonderfully. When unfolded and taped into place, it covered nearly the entire tabletop and was hidden under the tablecloth. I'm sure they would protect a wood table, too!

Need a Long Curtain Rod?

While looking for a very long curtain rod, I had trouble finding a rod that was 10-feet long. I was about to go to a big decorator store out of town when I chanced into a hardware store where the clerk told me about using copper plumbing pipe. They come as long as 12 feet. They are about half an inch in diameter and cost only a few dollars. They can be cut to any length. Their finish resembles some designer rods, but they are very inexpensive to use and their sturdy material keeps the middle part from sagging as easily as most rods if the curtains are heavy.

Silver Care

After the silver is polished, put some of those little desiccant packets in your storage container (the kind inside vitamin bottles, etc.), and it will really slow down tarnishing. I put some in my silver chest after Christmas last year (which has a lining to supposedly slow down tarnish but doesn't always do a great job), and when I took the pieces out at Thanksgiving, they looked freshly polished. I also put a few of these in my jewelry box along with all my sterling pieces, and they stay shiny bright.

Homemade Wrinkle Releaser

Commercial wrinkle releaser is expensive and even more so when you consider you're paying mostly for water. Put two tablespoons of liquid fabric softener into a standard spray bottle. Fill the rest with water. Shake. You've made wrinkle releaser. I was lucky enough to have a small sample-sized bottle of fabric softener put in my mailbox about three years ago, so while I use wrinkle releaser at least once a week, I haven't paid for it in years.

A Better Christmas Gift

As a mom of three small boys, I have more than enough toys in my house. Last year, we started asking the grandparents to purchase lessons. This may include swimming, gymnastic, karate, music, etc. lessons, depending on the child's interests. To fulfill the need grandparents have to put a present under the tree, they get a new outfit for the activity or swimsuit and towel and wrap with a homemade gift certificate. There is less clutter in our house, and our children enjoy it as much, if not more, than another toy!

Paint Saver

I recently repainted our home office. The first time I painted it, I used a roller to do the job. It took over a gallon of paint. This time, I decided to use a brush because I was doing it over a period of days. The second paint job took only two quarts, looks nicer, and was less messy than the roller job. No More Waste!

One thing I hate to do is waste food. However, I inevitably ended up throwing away leftovers because I'd forgotten how old they were. I finally hit on a simple solution. Every time I put something in the fridge, I use a dry-erase pen to write the date on the container. Even when I am in a rush and just put a pan of food in the refrigerator, I write the date on the lid. This helps me to decide later whether something's safe to eat or not and also draws my attention to the container when I look in the fridge, making it more likely that I'll use the food before it gets too old. Just make sure to use the dry-erase pen on a smooth surface. If you do, it will wash right off when you wash your containers.

Homemade Window De-Icer

To prevent your car's windows/mirrors from icing up in the winter, treat the windows before you go to bed each night. The window treatment can be made up of three parts vinegar to one part water and placed in a spray bottle. This mixture will prevent ice from forming. It is important to spray all of the car's windows and not just the windshield. You can also use the same mixture using rubbing alcohol.

No More Dry Winter Indoor Air

In the winter, the air indoors gets so dry from central heating. Some people buy humidifiers to put some moisture into the air. A cheaper way is to hang up at least some of your wet pajamas, underwear, T-shirts, etc. on hangers around your bedroom to dry. I give each garment a couple of good shakes, which takes care of most of the wrinkles. You will find from experience which clothes work best for this. They will dry by morning, adding moisture to the air and letting you breathe easier. Then you can hang or fold them away.

Wet Cell Phones

My cell phone got wet the other morning, and I immediately took out the battery, dried it off, and put it in some rice to dry out. My husband works with components that need to be tested in a vacuum chamber, and when he got home that night, he said that it was too bad we didn't have a vacuum chamber at home like he had at work, as it would pull the water out in no time. I remembered I had a sample pack of the zipper vacuum bags with the hand vacuum pump. I threw my phone in the bag and pulled the air out as hard as I could and let it sit for an hour or so. The phone was really cold, which my husband said was the water coming out, so I let it sit a bit longer. When I took it out and put the battery back in, the phone worked perfectly!

Veggie Wash

I work for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, so I asked one of our food specialists about veggie washes. It turns out that they are made mainly of vinegar with a few other ingredients. My grandmother always soaked her produce in vinegar/water (equal amounts) and then rinsed with cold water. The commercial products don't really clean any better than this.

As long as you have a large bowl and a colander, you can make your own dip-vat as well. Place the colander inside the bowl, fill with vinegar-water mixture, and put your fruit/vegetables inside. When they've soaked for 5-10 minutes, just lift the colander out and rinse! This works great!

Car Key Fobs

Recently, my key fob stopped working. I had just put in a new battery, but the programming wasn't working. The dealership repair shop wanted $50 to repair it. Plus, I would need to make an appointment and bring it in. In desperation, I did an internet search on programming key fobs.

Once I had the information, it took me about two minutes to reprogram my own key fob! I put the printout with my user manual and now can quickly and easily reprogram as needed.

Attracting Birds

I enjoy attracting different kinds of birds to my yard by feeding them all year. However, commercial birdseed is very expensive and can really add up in the cold winter months when birds require more food. After a little research, I discovered these inexpensive solutions from bird-feeding websites.

Try chick scratch or scratch grains. This is available at farm supply stores. I buy a 50-pound bag. I mix it with black oil sunflower seed, which is also quite economical. I splurge only on whole peanuts when they are on sale at the local grocery store.

Cleaning Pans

For decades, I have put pots and pans that were encrusted with burned food into a sink filled with hot water and detergent. However, I still had to scrub and scrub to get them clean. One day, while I was "deglazing" a pan prior to making gravy, I thought, "Why can't I do this with my pots and pans?" I tried it, and it works.

Pour an inch or so of water in the bottom of a pot or pan with stuck-on food, heat it up to simmering, and from time to time scrape gently to loosen the food. Let it cool before washing, as it will be hot!

Storing Your Off-Season Clothes

I fill regular garbage bags with clothing that I am going to store. Then, I take my vacuum sweeper hose and stick it inside the bag. After gathering the plastic bag around the hose, I let it suck the air out and everything shrinks down real tight. I pull the hose out carefully, keeping my hand wrapped around hose. After twisting the bag around several times, I then tape the top down on the bag with masking tape.

I also did this when my daughter was traveling home on a plane. She was going back with more than she came with. It made more room in her suitcase for other things she bought on her trip.
