Gentle Leader: Walk your Dog without pulling

My family has a cocker spaniel that enjoys going for walks, but we don’t enjoy it. Our dog, Rocky pulls as we walk. Trying to sniff everything, trying to chase after squirrels, etc. Our arms and hands were tired from trying to keep him close.

Upon recommendation by a local dog trainer, we purchased a gentle leader. A gentle leader head collar is a very simple, painless collar that gently guides the dog while walking. I sincerely had my doubts as to how this could possibly work. Well, we tried it on Rocky and I was absolutely amazed! I could walk him around the neighborhood without any trouble at all. It was like he was a different dog. I could even let my 8 year old walk him with no issue.

No one is paying me to recommend this product, I just found something that worked so well for me that I wanted to share this with all of you. You can buy this product from stores like Petco, Pet Smart, Walmart and Amazon. The cost runs from about $14 –$22 depending on store and size.

Natural Deodorant

I use plain white vinegar as natural deodorant. I just apply a bit with a cotton ball after showering and let it dry. It works great, and after a few minutes, the smell of the vinegar dissipates. Plus, it is dirt cheap.

Kids' Play Areas

We used to have a section in our yard for our kids with swings, overhead bars, and climbing towers. We filled the area with pine shavings. We were able to get large bales at the feed store. It will cling to clothes at first, but if you hose it down when you first spread it out, it will stay put.

Cleaning Grout

I just discovered this one myself, so I'm happy to pass on a frugal, relatively simple way to clean the grout between ceramic tiles. I use baking soda! I dampen the area (just wipe it with a damp cloth) and sprinkle baking soda over the grout. I let it set a few minutes and then use an old toothbrush to scrub it. It really takes minimal elbow grease. This absolutely amazed me the first time I tried it. I keep baking soda in an old spice shaker and use it to clean my sinks as well.

Self Snack Packs

Losing weight is hard. It's especially hard when you want a snack. A lot of companies are making 100 calorie snack packs now, but they can be quite expensive! I buy a full-size bag or box of a couple of treats and figure how many would be 100 calories (or close to it ), using the nutritional information on the packaging. Then I make up my own snack packs. I generally get at least twice the amount of small packages doing it this way. Of course, I make sure I'm not hungry first!

Dishwasher Detergent Alternative

For a frugal and very environmentally-friendly alternative to corrosive automatic dishwasher soap, mix together equal parts washing soda (NOT baking soda) and borax. Store it dry in a tightly covered container and use it as you would regular powdered dishwasher detergent. It cleans and disinfects just as well and contains no harmful phosphates. You should be able to find both borax and washing soda in the laundry aisle of your supermarket.

Embroidery Patterns

I look through coloring books until I find just the right page to trace onto fine white cloth. These patterns make wonderful gifts for an embroidered child's pillow, a set of framed embroidery for a nursery wall, etc. Another use for some of the "patterns" is to use them to cut out fabric to top stitch to a little child's tee shirt or to make a border for curtains. Oh, what fun when we find another use for beloved items!

Superhero Cupcakes

My granddaughter Elena made darling cupcakes for her 10-year-old brother's birthday party. He wanted "superhero" decorations on them. She searched and could not find tiny "superheroes" to use, so she used color copies of pictures from her computer (about two or three inches tall). She sandwiched them between sticky tape, cut around the figures, and added a toothpick to stick them in the cupcake. The decorations were very colorful and almost free, and the cupcakes were a big hit with the guests. Colorful gift-wrap decorations would work well, too.

Help for Dying Plants

My houseplants were looking sickly and maybe needing to be repotted to a larger pot. I went to my local technical school to the horticulture department. I showed them all of my plants and asked for advice. They gave their expert advice for free and repotted them to a larger pot for a very small fee (the potting soil price). My plants have never looked better and are growing like a weed as they say.

Also, they have beautiful, healthy plants for sale growing there. If I go in May or the beginning of June (which is the end of the school year), I can buy them for next to nothing.

Save the Remaining Paint

The enemy of partially used cans of paint or stain is air. No matter how tightly you seal the containers, there is still an air pocket at the top, which will eventually work against the paint and stain and ruin it.

Those empty glass jars you've been throwing away or recycling can save the day! You have two choices. First, recant the paint or stain into the jars, filling all the way to the top to minimize the size of the air pocket. Or, if you'd rather, thoroughly wash the "outside" of the jars and seal them tightly. Then drop them into the larger gallon paint or stain cans. That will displace and raise the level of the contents, thus minimizing the air pocket. Put a heavy object in the jar if you want it to sink. For smaller pint or quart cans of paint and stain, dropping glass marbles into the can will have the same effect.

Why My Clothes Always Look New

My friend recently went into my laundry room and noticed I keep a lot of RIT dye in the laundry room and asked where I purchased it as she needed to dye some material for her grandson's play.

I told her I bought it at the grocery store. However, curiosity got the best of her and she asked me why I kept so much of it around.

I told her that all my black clothes are years old, and they stay black because I occasionally use RIT dye packets to refresh the black. I also keep a bottle of the blue jean coloring to refresh blue jeans. She couldn't believe it when I told her some of my t-shirts and dressier clothes were many years old and looked brand new simply because I ran them through a dye every now and then.

I further told her that RIT has a whitening process in packets. Occasionally, I run my whites through it, and RIT has a rust packet process remover I use when my dear husband gets rust all over his white shirts when working around the house.

When you buy it all on sale and use it all when you need it, everything lasts longer, and you'll save money.

How to make money with your site or blog

If you have you recently created a website or blog you are probably wondering if their is a way you can make money from it. The answer is "Yes".

One of the best and easiest ways to earn money from your website/blog is to use affiliates. Affiliates are simply companies that pay you for placing an ad, a link or a banner on your site and when some sort of action is taken( a link is clicked, a product is ordered or an email is submitted) you earn money. There are different varieties of affiliates. Pay Per Click, Pay Per Lead, Pay Per Sale. What you chose depends a lot on the type of site you have. See what each affiliate has to offer then choose wisely. Select ads that will compliment your site or blog.

Google Adsense is a Pay Per Click is a terrific and easy way to earn some cash for almost any type of website or blog. Once you sign up and set up an ad to run on your site, you wait. When visitors stop by your site and they click on a link or banner ad that Google has hosted, you earn money. How much? That varies. It can be anywhere from $.01 to $5.00, it just depends on how much the advertiser has paid to Google for hosting the ad. The more visitors your site has, the more money you can make. There are a few things to be careful of with Google Adsense, though. You must be very careful NOT to click on the links on your own site. Google will terminate your Adsense account with them if they suspect fraudulent activity. So don't try to earn money by clicking on the ads on your site/blog. That is a big No-No. The payment threshold is $100. That is you must first earn $100 before you will receive a payment. For all the details on that visit Google Adsense.

Another similar Pay Per Click affiliate is Adbrite. It works very similarly to Adsense, but with a $5 payment threshold. I have found more success with Adsense, but Adbrite is still a viable option.
Logical Media is an affiliate program that offers all three affiliate types, with Pay Per Lead being the most common in their system. You post a banner or link on your site and when someone provides their email address or signs up for something, you earn. They have different advertisers to choose from and you can choose which ones will work best on your site.
MySavings is similar to Logical Media. In fact they have many of the same advertisers. Their payment threshold is only $50 where as Logical Media's is $100.
Amazon Associates is a program where you earn a commission when you advertise and sell a product offered on Amazon. You can put links to specific products or a variety. You can even set up your own store front. You can include any products you want.

Any or all of these affiliates can earn you money, but if you don't have any traffic/visitors to your site, the best affiliate programs won't help a bit. Write great content and update regularly. Submit your site to search engines and swap links with other sites similar to yours.

HOme Improvement Series #7: Household Cleaning Solutions Using Vinegar

You may not consider cleaning as a home improvement, but just think about it. When your home is nice and clean isn’t it an improvement?

Anyway, I was trying to find a way to clean my home without having to use harsh chemicals. (I had a bad episode with a bathroom cleaner that had bleach in it!)

I knew vinegar was a great cleaner, but wasn’t sure how to utilize it for all my cleaning needs. I stumbled upon this helpful site, 1001 Uses for White Distilled Vinegar. There are tips for cleaning, gardening, health, pets, cooking and more. I chose to post all the cleaning tips that had listed.

Check out all the ways vinegar can help you improve the cleanliness of your home.

To shine chrome sink fixtures that have a lime buildup, use a paste made of 2 tablespoons salt and 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar.
Make your own scouring cleanser by combining 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 tablespoon liquid detergent. Add just enough white distilled vinegar to give it a thick but creamy texture.
Clean counter tops and make them smell sweet again with a cloth soaked in undiluted white distilled vinegar.
Clean and deodorize a drain by pouring in 1 cup baking soda, then one cup hot white distilled vinegar. Let this sit for 5 minutes or so, then run hot water down the drain.
Deodorize the garbage disposal by pouring in 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup hot white distilled vinegar. Let sit for 5 minutes then run hot water down the disposal.
Deodorize and clean the garbage disposal with white distilled vinegar ice cubes. Make them by freezing full-strength white distilled vinegar in an ice cube tray. Run several cubes down the disposal while flushing with cold water.
Clean the microwave by mixing 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a microwave-safe bowl. Bring it to a rolling boil inside the microwave. Baked-on food will be loosened, and odors will disappear. Wipe clean.
Clean the shelves and walls of the refrigerator with a half-and-half solution of water and white distilled vinegar.

Cut the grime on the top of the refrigerator with a paper towel or cloth and full-strength white distilled vinegar.
Avoid the bad smell when you heat up a newly cleaned oven by using a sponge soaked in diluted white distilled vinegar for the final rinse.
To clean a grease splattered oven door window, saturate it with full-strength white distilled vinegar. Keep the door open for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping with a sponge.
Remove soap buildup and odors from the dishwasher by pouring a cup of white distilled vinegar inside the empty machine and running it through a whole cycle. Do monthly.
To prevent good glassware from getting etched by minerals, wash then spray with full-strength white distilled vinegar. Give the glasses a hot water rinse before letting them dry or drying them with a towel.
For cloudy glassware, soak paper towels or a cloth in full-strength white distilled vinegar and wrap around the inside and outside of the glass. Let sit awhile before rinsing clean.
Get rid of lime deposits in a tea kettle by adding 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar to the water and letting it sit overnight. If more drastic action is needed, boil full-strength white distilled vinegar in the kettle a few minutes, let cool and rinse with plain water.

Remove mineral deposits from coffee makers with white distilled vinegar. Fill the water reservoir with 1 cup or more of white distilled vinegar and run it through a whole cycle. Run it once or twice more with plain water to rinse clean. (Check the owners’ manual first.)
Remove stains from coffee and teacups by scrubbing them gently with equal parts of salt (or baking soda) and white distilled vinegar. Rinse clean.
For stained and smelly plastic food containers, wipe them with a cloth dampened with white distilled vinegar.
Remove odors from a lunch box by placing inside a slice of bread that has been soaked in white distilled vinegar. Leave overnight.
Remove ugly film in narrow-necked glass jars, flower vases, and bottles by letting undiluted white distilled vinegar sit in them for a few hours. Add a little rice or sand and shake vigorously to loosen stubborn stains. Repeat if necessary.
Easily clean your mini blinds by wearing pair of white cotton gloves. Dip gloved fingers into a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm tap water, and run your fingers across both sides of each blind.
To clean tarnished brass, copper, and pewter, use a paste with equal amounts of white distilled vinegar and table salt.
Make a metal cleanser by adding enough white distilled vinegar to 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar to make a paste. Rub it on and let it dry on the surface. Wash it off and dry with a soft cloth.
Polish brass and copper with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of ketchup and 1 tablespoon white distilled vinegar. Rub it on with a clean cloth until dry and shiny.
Remove dark stains on an aluminum pot by boiling a mixture of 1 cup white distilled vinegar and 1 cup hot water.
Discourage ants by spraying undiluted white distilled vinegar outside doorways and windowsills, around appliances and wherever you find the pests coming in.
Get rid of fruit flies by setting out a small dish of undiluted white distilled vinegar.
Clean the wheel of a can opener using white distilled vinegar and an old toothbrush.
Remove the smell of spoiled food from a refrigerator by first rinsing the area with soap and water. Spray surfaces with full-strength white distilled vinegar and wipe them down with a damp cloth or sponge. Fill some containers with baking soda and place inside. Close the door and leave for a few days.
Wipe grease off exhaust fan grids, the inside of your oven, or anywhere grease gathers with a sponge soaked in white distilled vinegar.
To make cleaning the grill easier, spray a solution of half water and half white distilled vinegar on the cooking surface.
To remove a label, decal, or price tag, cover with a cloth soaked in white distilled vinegar. Leave the cloth on overnight and the label should slide off.
Renew sponges and dishrags by placing them in just enough water to cover them. Then add 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar. Let them soak overnight.
