Apartment with boutique apartment concept consist of 2 levels of basement, 4 levels of podium for commercial and 10 levels of apartment tower (consist 55 units of 56-197 m2 living space). Questions

Please explain the design brief for the project.

This villa was designed as an urban rental property specifically tailored to the Bali party market. This is in a densely built up area with direct neighbours all around so sound insulation and privacy were very important. The villa was to be like an oasis in the city. The façade is unprepossessing yet when you enter the villa unfolds with a 25 meter swimming pool, roof terraces and gardens, spaces for groups and privacy for individuals. We designed all the accommodation to the perimeter walls to allow a feeling of space and garden within. Upon entry you feel totally secluded from your environs.

Does your project demonstrate efficiency in at least one or a combination of the following aspects? If so please support with quantitative figures and results.

Energy

We have used a lot of water to encourage air circulation all through the villa. We have planted a Ficus tree that will eventually shade the bedroom roofs totally. We have the roof pond that keeps the living room cool by reflecting the suns rays off the roof.

Land or Site (i.e. sensitive to nature/surroundings)

We used the scale of the street to determine the scale of the building and treated the façade with planted areas and timber and local stone to soften and blend with the surroundings.

Materials

Think this is a vital responsibility for all architects to reduce the carbon foot print of all we create, and something Gfab take very seriously. We always select local materials from the region we build in, here we used Sala Gadang a flint like stone which we cut in a square format as a wall cladding. To the external façade we used Paras Bukit from the south of Bali, commonly crushed and used as land fill again we used in a random square cut applied to walls. They additionally provide a sound and thermal insulation.

What makes your design unique?

The use of nature in an urban villa. We have used a roof pond to passively cool the villa below so that no air conditioning is needed. All of the bedrooms have a shower garden, all rooms aspect to landscape. We have used nature to mask and camouflage and to cool the building. I think this gives this urban villa a tranquillity that makes it so popular.

What constraints (in terms of site, budget, etc.) were imposed on the project? How did you overcome those constraints? What design features highlight those efforts?

Privacy in an urban environment when the villa is open largely, the living and dining areas have no walls and most of the spaces are external. Rather than dense walls we have used planting and trellising to allow air flow yet to visually block the outside world.

We take from local vernaculars notions of how to deal with weather extremes, by having deep roof overhangs, which provide shade and rain protection.

The Concord

The Concord – Project Description
PDW is appointed as the architect after a closed competition process. The site is located in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta across Mall Taman Anggrek, one of the largest shopping center in Jakarta. The location sits among green area; unfortunately it is also located by the toll road.
The Concept and Design Idea
The brief is to develop a high-end residential development. This development should be unique, compare to no other in Jakarta, as it has a lush green surrounding. The building itself has to have a unique form, unlike other apartment developed in the area. The idea is to have a slender shape building, therefore, the tower is divided into two wings, and each has different floor height.
The concept (attached 04-Concept.jpg) is to take the surrounding green to the residential tower. Between the towers, there are open space and facilities as sky garden and other uses.
Sustainable Features
The corridor apartment corridor is using natural ventilation to reduce significantly the use of air conditioning. There are sky garden in every 6 levels providing open space for the residents. The majority of the openings of the façade are facing the north and south to reduce the heat load inside the apartment.
Material Used
The building structure is using reinforced concrete; the cladding is proposed using curtain wall and aluminum cladding. For public area, natural stone are proposed.
Relation to the surrounding
The building are located close to one of the largest shopping centre in Jakarta, however the rest of the surrounding are still having large open space. The site is bounded by toll road and a river. The main surrounding features are brought into development, the green and water.
Constraints and Challenges
The site constraints are the toll road and the quality of the river next by. The site environment needs to be controlled to provide better living condition.
Unique Feature
The shape of the building is unlike other apartment unique. It is irregular, divided into two residential wings, providing open space between the buildings (please sees the concept and site analysis attached).

SCBD Lot 18 Office Park

Project Description:

The SCBD building was designed based on the form of the site orientation

Designed as the office building that consisted of 5 Tower that function as the rental offices. The height for each one tower is 9 floors. This same height will form a horizontal skyline that became the symbol of the balance.

The building Facade was dominated with the use of glasses (curtain wall). This aim was to put forward the modern impression, transparent and formed a block that became a unity with surrounding area.

The concept Design of this office building was preceded with form of building mass that were matched with the form of site. Where site of this building become quite unique form so the building mass were matched so to be able to create the circulation of the vehicle and pedestrian that adequate enough. The circulation could be accessed by occupants of the building to reach the tower every time.

With 2 routes in (entered into the building), and 3 routes out (left the building). This position adapted the available reforestation outside the site, so as the circulation is more easy (the position of the route in-out will not cause direction circulation to return to the building that orbited the other reforestation which is quite far).

From the form of the building mass that is 5 building mass with the form that was different but joined. Where the 5 building mass use the same element of architecture which are glasses and aluminum panel. The domination of the glasses element put forward some façade the modern and transparent building so as the building gave the impression of being free and light. Nevertheless aluminum panel as the balancing element could reduce the minor impression with the surrounding area. The element of glasses that were used had the green color transparent with the frosted glass and glass design. The green color gave the cool and light impression to the building.

This building had access entrance main from Street Senopati that appeared to the side of west. So as the front view of the building that was dominated by the element of glasses was enough to give the hot impact and to be dazzled into the building. However this impact could be overcome with using glasses that could absorb hot.

Nu Ciwalk

Located along jalan Cihampelas, The Ciwalk Boutique Hotel is a new extension of the old Ciwalk shopping area.

DCM Jakarta observes the tradition of Art Nouveau and Art Deco of Old Bandung, and transforming the hotel and its new lifestyle extension into a series of curvilinear lines forming feminine forms.

We saw the opportunity to contrast these soft shapes with the current macho expressionist streetscape along Jalan Cihampelas, where the streetscape consists of a series thematic Jeans shops (from Rambo to Planet Hollywood).

Ciwalk (Cihampelas Walk) is a 4 hectare site previously used as parking. Parking is now relocated in basements, the new hotel raise above them. Matured trees are preserved; hence we have to adjust the layouts of f & b outlets to avoid these 100 year old pines, hence creating interesting courtyards in between shops and cafes.

Shops are linked by naturally ventilated double Decker walkways, creating a new outdoor loop.

Ciwalk is designed as an alternative lifestyle centre free of vehicular traffic.
The hotel public areas and corridors will be naturally ventilated (no air conditioning).
Hotel bedrooms have the option of opening their doors to balcony.
This is conducive to the mild and cool climate of the city of Bandung.

Sun shading is enhanced by creating deep balconies for bedrooms.
Additional matured trees will be transplanted into the site to create canopies around the walkways.

Ciwalk is an experiment to bring people closer to nature and the outdoor, in an urban setting.

The hotel is designed to observe old Bandung in style, and project the architecture to a future of less energy consumption by creating deep balconies and arrow ventilations on all floors and public facilities.

UI Train Station

Contest for UI station 1 and UI Station 2

100 ha of city forest were maintained by the University of Indonesia within its total area of 309 Ha. It has 6 beautiful lakes scattered over the Centrum area and academic areas. Offering a harmonious green jungle environment.

Reforesting was also maintained along the side of train track which will work as a barrier/divider between UI and Margonda area.

Thus, it will create a green friendly environment as well as the image if Depok city

UI Station 1 and UI station 2 is an external and internal means of transportation to and from UI area.

It is designed to blend with its surrounding, connecting to pedestrian and cycling track

The bridge connecting UI Campus area to the Satiation 2 has become a “New Main Gate” for the outsider.

URBAN LINKAGE

Both Station are connected by Jalan Margonda and Artery to leave Depok city and Jalan Lingkar Kampus toward the UI area (Picture 1)

New Pedestrian was designed to link both stations to UI area. Existing pedestrian were maintained to link UI Meeting Point to the station and will also connected to the new pedestrian. (Picture 2)

New Cycling track was designed to link the southern part of UI campus with the station, by considering the postgraduate dormitory development planning as a new activities. Existing cycling track will connect the north part of UI campus to the stations. Both stations will also linked by a new cycling track and its parking facilities. Pedestrian will also build from parking area to the UI campus (Picture 3)

Architecture Concept

Station UI 1 and Station UI 2 designed with “Movement” concept, Come - Wait - Leave activities from both destinations. The building masses were made F L U I D, to represent the dynamics of the train movement and its passenger. (Picture 5 and 6)

Museum Joang 45

Through this Design, PT. Arkonin achieves a first prize IAI award organized by the IAI & local government of DKI, Jakarta recently on August 2006.

Configuration of the new buildings is design with separated composition of simple mass pattern, through its functional space and forms the new building appear as a background of the existing contemplative Museum Joang 45.

Open space between the original building and the new building is surrounded by the arrangement of vertical plane forming a curve line position generating a moving motion and a feeling of silence (contemplative). This vertical element also functions as sun shield. The open space is also design horizontally, creating an endless wave pattern, with the existing Museum Joang 45 as its starting point this visualize the continuous spirit to struggle.

According to history, the Museum Joang 45 was a place where youthful generation gathered to strive for independence. With the analogy of the Museum’s history, the supporting buildings façade is design resembling a row of youthful generation using shields as a defense symbolizes the spirit to fight for independence. The connecting building façade exploit glass material to reflect the function of the Museum, which is also utilize as an exhibition Hall.

Circulation in the new building is design with ramps, to facilitate visitors with a convenient approach to encircle the building complex. The experience of walking through these ramps to the second floor while viewing towards the open space / plaza enhances the contemplative atmosphere. The exhibition area is design with linear flow circulation to exploit the rooms more optimal with the intention of visitors will not overlook the display exhibited by The Museum.

The space programming offers a sequence of experience; it builds up emotional sensation through natural lighting and indoor illumination. The lighting effects influence the display exhibited by the Museum. For example at the supporting building front façade is insufficient of natural lighting with the intention of displaying collections during colonialism and throughout defending the independency period. The back façade is sufficient in lighting; this part of the room displays collections during the independence / freedom era.

Air circulation offers several alternatives toward energy consumption, not all rooms require air-conditioning therefore at some area contain natural air ventilation.

Project Description:
Located in Bandung region that was relatively having steep contour, the building functioned as the house consisted of two floors with the south-east-east orientation. In the south-east direction could be seen Bandung city vista among the 2 hills, in the application of the design was positioned to the sitting area, dining area and main bedroom was oriented to the side the hills.

There is a plateau in the site that giving the efforts to get the horizontal area for this building, among the steep condition from the surrounding environment. The plateau area was filled with the shade terrace as a result of the mass above with the upright position towards the sitting area, dining area, pantry as well as the swimming pool. The area of the service was placed separated from the main building, located adjacent to the highway to facilitate the user access.

On the upper floor roof of the bed room area are using roof garden with the function of decking view. This Decking view could be accessed direct from the back of the site with vertical access using the form of ramp. The use of ramp means of going through the contoured land that for the architect was part of the space experience that was beautiful to be enjoyed slowly.

Façade using clay base material that was function as ‘second skin’ of the building, with the open resembled character, to enable visually communication between inside room and the outside but keep continued to maintain the function of the private area. To the upright side was using the steel framework was covered with wire and the spreading crop as the arbiter softly between the sitting area and the service area. As the wood material using in skinned the building dominant enough compared with another building material.

Taman Ismail Marzuki

TAMAN ISMAIL MARZUKI

The existing Taman Ismail Marzuki is an old place dedicated for arts. The design for revitalization of Taman Ismail Marzuki has the vision to relive Taman Ismail Marzuki as a vibrant public space and a green reservoir for the city. This vision will be achieved with these five missions:

A. Thematic Park.
The name ‘Ismail Marzuki’ had already been attached to this place for long. Ismail Marzuki is a native musician. His legendary works had been a bench mark in Indonesia Musical History. As a commemoration for him, we explored the notes in ‘Indonesia Pusaka’, a most wellknown song created by Ismail Marzuki, in every possible manner, and used it as a tool to define the landscape and architecture of this park. Superimposed on the site, the notes become the placement spots for the new trees, sky lights, and park’s furnitures, while the grid lines mark the access into the sites. Superimposed on the building, the composition will create dynamic façades; consist of different intensities of lines, dots, layers and depth.

B. The Bridge
The bridge is designed as a packed container to reduce building coverage area by accommodating as many function as it can, not only from the previous existing building, but also the new programs related to arts and other supporting facilities like food and beverage outlets. In the same time, it symbolically connects the old and new function, and the public and private area of the whole park. The container itself is five storeys high, but it is elevated 12 meters high above the ground to allow the continuity of space.

C. Preservation
To preserve the memory and the soul of the place, and to minimize the waste, we decided to preserve the old Jakarta Art Institute campus on the back side of the site. Only the ground floor parts of these buildings will be renovated. The walls will be dismantled, leaving only the structures to allow the continuity of space. All the functions on the ground floor will be relocated either to the first floor of the buildings or to the bridge. The whole ground floor will be a continuous open space, dedicated for the mingling of public and private.

D. Multifunctional Park
Not only as the lungs for the city, is a place where people meet. From the beginning, the narrow opening is designed to attract people to flow freely inside. Afterward, the movement of the space is fluid. The surface is designed as a continuous plane, allowing all places to be easily accessible. Even though there are defined spaces, the whole composition of the elements in the park suggests a more informal functions and activities.

E. Water Front
The river, which used to be the public common waste bin, is revitalized to be waterfront. The waterfront is periodically transformed into a theater on the river. This strategy is applied to create a rich spatial experience, and at the same time arouse our awareness of this water body as a very important element of the city, not only to prevent flood, but as a prominent mean in the old days for many activities, including arts. Artificial River is created along the North West side of the site to help conserve rain water and replace fence as a friendlier boundary between this park and its surroundings.

Union Square - Surabaya

Sentra Niaga Tangerang

Building complex located in the fast developing, in the main side of the road, the Sudirman road, the Tangerang city.

Building function was blend between the commercial function in the building mall and the hotel with the recreation function form the plant and flower kiosk and open landscape.

The two functions were integrated by designing the landscape function plant and flower kiosk that insert into the commercial building.
The plant and flower market and landscape became the focus, where commercial buildings and the hotel obtained the profit view from his existence.

The area of the crop kiosk was compiled in geometric patterns that was resemble than the geometric garden in Europe where kiosks was inside.

The design of this complex also paid attention to the surrounding environment that was not yet developed by carrying out the repeated design for the drainage system of the project but also in the area around. Moreover because of the sensitivity with the village region behind, cut and fill was considered if rain happens and integrated with the absorbing system and drainage.

Designed so close to nature, almost all the illumination systems & natural air conditioning, outdoor restaurant will blend with open the plant and flower kiosk, hotel lobby was integrated with landscape, mall commercial has open parking system are also for the energy saving.

Hollywood Residence

Located in Jl. Jend Gatot Subroto, Jakarta, Hollywood Residence project are design to fulfill the residential demand in the CBD area.

This project stopped on economic crisis during 2000, and the owner wants to redesign the building façade, into modern look.

FAÇADE:

Building designed with modern style dominant using glass as a façade. Crown are designed to be more dynamic, with cut box shape / ‘tapering’ and consist with simple lines and placed in composition as a vertical and horizontal lines.

And in the wing side, horizontal lines are more dominant, composed with patterned vertical lines.

Curtain wall and glass used almost all over the building façade, except the podium which using a marble stone and glass with window wall system.

In the balcony, glass shape on façade ‘thorn’ into a railing until the balcony ceiling, creating opening.

Green tinted glass is used to absorb less heat rather than other color. Minimize the using of AC.
