7 career lessons from Tina Fey's "Bossypants"

Celebrities don't always make the best role models. For every Bono and Oprah Winfrey there is a real housewife of [choose your city] screaming at her supposed friend in a busy restaurant. Celebrities don't always make the best authors either. Just because someone can sing or act doesn't mean they're capable of writing a stellar autobiography either. It doesn't even mean they have an interesting story to tell.
Fortunately that's not the case with Tina Fey's half-autobiography/half-musings "Bossypants." In one chapter she explains how the fundamentals of improvisational comedy are great guidelines for everyday life. Later, when she recounts some of the hurdles she has faced as a woman in comedy and as the head writer on a historic TV show, her struggles sound remarkably like those of many non-famous workers. After I was done being upset that this fun, leisure reading had been interrupted by unintentional learning, I realized that Fey's lessons reached beyond the confines of improv.
In case you don't get the chance to read "Bossypants" or you're currently too busy rereading the "Harry Potter" series in preparation of the final film, here are seven lessons every worker can learn from Tina Fey:
1. Agree and say yes
Fey explains that the first rule of improv is to always agree with your scene partner. Whatever scenario your acting partner has set up is the one you have to follow because otherwise you end up with two people onstage bickering, and then nobody laughs. Being agreeable is, of course, not the easiest thing to do and not the appropriate reaction in every scenario. However, it is a good jumping off point.
"[The] Rule of Agreement reminds you to 'respect what your partner has created' and to at least start from an open-minded place," Fey explains. "Start with a yes and see where that takes you."
You're going to strongly dislike many people you work with or for. You're probably also going to think your ideas are always better than everyone else's. Even if you're right, give other people a chance before automatically dismissing them or their ideas.
2. Yes, and...
In scene with your improv partner, you aren't just agreeing with them, you're also helping them move the story along. Therefore the best response to give is actually, "Yes, and..." The reason is that a simple "yes" is neither helpful nor entertaining. Journalists avoid simple yes or no questions if they want their interviews to be exciting and conversational.
"To me, 'Yes, and' means don't be afraid to contribute," she writes. "It's your responsibility to contribute. Almost make sure you're adding something to the discussion."
Good bosses don't just promote nice workers; they promote employees who are ready for the next level. Clocking in and clocking out every day and doing the bare minimum means you're doing your job, but no one is going to take notice. If you offer your own ideas and contribute to the conversation in some way, you help move the organization along and leave your mark.
3. Think of solutions, not questions
In improv, you don't want to riddle your scene partner with questions. If your partner presents you with a scenario, then then say, "Yes, and..." followed by an assertion. In "Bossypants," Fey explains that asking question after question makes your scene partner has to think of all these responses alone. No one likes that much pressure.
The adage "Don't bring me problems; bring me solutions" holds true here. You're in a situation at work and you know there's an issue that needs attention, don't run to the boss saying, "This project is going to fail and we're going to lose millions of dollars." Think about how you can fix the problem first and then bring up the problem. Telling your boss, "This project has some serious setbacks, but here's what we can do to fix it," is a much better way to do business (and keep your job).
4. Make statements
Fey notes that woman, in particular, should speak assertively and not with self-doubt. Women in the workplace still face men ready to disregard their contribution, unfortunately, but her advice is good for anyone who is hesitant to speak up.
"Speak in statements instead of apologetic questions," she writes. "Make statements, with your actions and your voice." As she explains, no one wants to hear their doctor say, "I'm going to be your surgeon? I'm here to talk to you about your procedure?"
5. There are no mistakes, only opportunities
This lesson sounds like one of those atrocious affirmations people tell themselves every morning while looking in the mirror, but it has merit. If you're improvising and think you're acting out one thing but everyone perceives it differently, you can't stop and tell them they're wrong. Their perception is now the scene you're acting in and it's your responsibility to go with it.
"In improv there are no mistakes, only beautiful happy accidents," Fey writes.
In the workplace there are accidents. Horrible, terrible, someone-make-it-stop accidents. We've all been there. However, there is no Ctrl+Z button to undo these mistakes. Once a mistake happens, it happens, and whining about wanting a do-over doesn't change anything. It's now your responsibility to make whatever mess you're in work.
6. You're going to fail sometimes
Fey says that Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels often told her, "The show doesn't go on because it's ready; it goes on because it's 11:30." His point was that the show is live and will be on the air at 11:30, whether or not you think everything is perfect. That's why sometimes some terrible sketches make it on the air. The writers and actors didn't have time to perfect each line.
"You can't be that kid standing at the top of the waterslide, overthinking it. You have to go down the chute. (And I'm from a generation where a lot of people died on waterslides, so this was an important lesson for me to learn)," writes Fey. "[What you write] will never be perfect, but perfect is overrated. Perfect is boring on live TV."
If you're too afraid to make a mistake, you'll never get anything done, which means you'll never have any successes either. Sometimes the misfires happen and, although you're upset, your life isn't ruined. Make sure the successes outnumber the failures and you'll be fine.
7. Be smarter than your critics
Fey points out the many critics who have declared that women aren't funny. Surprisingly, her attitude is that she doesn't care what they or any critics think. Unless the critic is your boss, their negativity isn't worth your time. If they are your boss, obviously you need to deal with their criticisms of you, whether that means discussing it with them or with someone who can help. But if they're not, think twice before focusing on their negativity.
"So my unsolicited advice to women in the workplace is this. When faced with sexism or ageism or lookism ... ask yourself the following question: 'Is this person in between me and what I want to do?' If the answer is no, ignore it and move on. Your energy is better used doing your work and outpacing people that way. Then, when you're in charge, don't hire the people who were jerky to you."
Ultimately that's good advice for all workers: Know the difference between someone who can hold you back and someone who is just distracting you from reaching your goals.

Today the order has about 13,000 members; 80,000 permanent volunteers; and 20,000 medical personnel including doctors, nurses, auxiliaries and paramedics in more than 120 countries.^[3] The goal is to assist the elderly, handicapped, refugeed, children, homeless, those with terminal illness and leprosy in five continents of the world, without distinction of race or religion.^[3] In several countries—including France, Germany and Ireland—the local associations of the Order are important providers of first aid training, first aid services and emergency medical services. LAST week marked not only the tenth anniversary of September 11th, but also the reckoning of a lesser-known trauma on New York soil: the 40th anniversary of the Attica prison uprising. At a time when the country’s prison population is bursting, with more than 2m people behind bars, the anniversary of this riot is inescapably meaningful.

At the Brooklyn Academy of Music, screenings of two documentaries and panel discussions, brought together some of those involved in the rebellion. This included a few inmates, a guard who had been held hostage by them, and Elizabeth Fink, a firebrand attorney who has essentially devoted her life to pursuing some measure of compensation from the State of New York for what happened that day.

On September 9th 1971 more than 1,000 prisoners of the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York gained control of Prison Yard D. They took several dozen prison employees hostage for five days and made demands for better living conditions, such as better nutrition, some educational opportunities and access to more than one shower per week. They invited observers to witness the negotiation process, including several politicians, Tom Wicker, an editor at the New York Times, William Kunstler, a famous civil rights attorney, and Louis Farakhan of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Just as Vietnam entered people’s homes through televised images, both documentaries—“Attica!” (1974) and “Ghosts of Attica” (2001)—show how Americans sat transfixed as they watched the events unfold on screen. Because of this trove of footage, the films provide a poignantly clear picture of the rebellion and the tragically violent aftermath ordered by Governor Nelson Rockefeller on September 13th. Indiscriminant shooting left 39 people killed, including ten of the guards held hostage. Scores more were wounded. It was one of the bloodiest one-day encounters among Americans in since the civil war. The panelists, echoing a general historical consensus, mused that Rockefeller, a Republican, had not yet given up his presidential ambitions and wanted to overcome his image as a liberal north-easterner with a show of brute force and a display of his commitment to law and order. He went on to serve as vice president under Gerald Ford from 1974 to 1977.

In recently uncovered tapes from the Nixon White House, several rather memorable conversations have surfaced between the president and Rockefeller. Just after the storming of the prison by state troopers, Rockefeller tells Nixon, “They did a fabulous job. It really was a beautiful operation.” Another notable moment is when Nixon tells his Chief of Staff, H.R. Haldeman, “the fact that it’s basically a black thing…that’s going to turn people off awful damn fast…”

When Ms Fink first saw the “Attica!” documentary in 1974, as a recent law-school graduate, it was a call to take action. The second film, “Ghosts of Attica”, features her subsequent work with the Attica inmates. After nearly 30 years, the inmates won a $12m judgment against the state, but no apology or admission of responsibility. According to Ms Fink, Attica's legacy can be seen in America's massive prison population and recidivism problems, which have grown exponentially since that bloody day in September 1971.

Important to keep in mind is the fact that the majority of those wasting away in America's prisons are victims of America's a monstrously profitable multi-industry built upon America' ill-conceived and morally corrupt "war on drugs".
One has to look deeply into America's war on drugs to understand all of the economic interests that it serves. Only by the excessive criminalization of personal drug use, and thereby driving up drug prices, which in turn attracts the worst type of criminals, could America create such a mess at it has created. A massive prison population is just one feature of this mess.
One wonders what further episodes could arise in America's vast prison gulag as its economy spirals downwards through fits and starts, and its government loses its grip in so many ways.

So what was the point of the article? Because inmate lawyers won their case the taxpayer has to shell out more for the people in prison. Nothing about the suffering of victims (police) families who must live without the loved ones murdered. No amout of money can convince me that what happened was justified. Why not report some stats on where the inmate population is today, 40 years hence?

From reading an account of the Attica prison riot several years ago (in Esquire, I believe), all of the hostages died as a result of "friendly fire" from the corrections officers tasked with rescuing them who fired indiscriminately into the prison yard where the prisoner were holding the hostages.

Ed, here are some stats from various sources. At end of 2010 the US prison population was over 2.4 million, up from 2.2 million in 2009 (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). US Bureau of Justice data suggests that over over seven million more were under correctional supervision in 2009 and that over 13 million pass through U.S. prisons and jails annually. About 70% of prisoners are in for non violent offences.
The US imprisons the highest proportion of its population in the world, 23% more people per 100,000 than second-placed Rwanda. Incidentally, the US rate is twice as high as Iran and six times higher than China (ranked 117th). (International Centre for Prison Studies).
Keeping US prisons full seems to be quite hard work although the three strikes rule has put one menace to society away for two consecutive 25 year terms for shoplifting nine videotapes. He'll be kept busy helping to produce the 100% of US military helmets, ID tags and ammunition belts, the 95% of paints, the 36% of domestic appliances and the 21% of of US office furniture that are made by US prison labour.(BBC)
What's going on here? Is the American dream now written as 'treat 'em mean and keep 'em keen'? This is so tragic and unnecessary.

When one considers that those who are currently imprisoned will never be allowed to vote, but will be compelled to pay taxes, will be automatically suspect of crimes because of their records, will have a great deal of trouble getting a job because of their records, is it a wonder that many are repeat offenders?
San Quentin and other prisons are the US gulags for those who are poor and especially those who are poor and nonwhite. But for many, the US is nearly a democracy. For cash or good credit.

Many of us who do not live in that country watch 'reality' shows concerning law enforcement there such as 'Cops©', carried on the Fox network. We have become acutely aware of the ease with which we may join the population at Attica by means of a simple traffic offense and the wrong colour passport. To preserve our human rights, we avoid travel in a country that thinks so highly of imprisonment.

For those who have problems with this comment, may I recommend that you watch 'Cops©' as a sort of travelogue? You will find it one of the most enlightening programmes carried by the Murdoch consortium.

I think some of the comments posted here belie a belief that prisons exist as a purely punitive measure and are not for rehabilitation/correctional purposes. While some people who commit crimes may be beyond wanting to reform themselves and their life choices, there are people in the US prison system who are not repeat offenders. More importantly, there are people in prison who do not want to be in prison again.
It is terribly hard to break the generational and life-long cycle of poverty in crime. Perhaps prisons could act as more of a way to help incarcerated people break free of that cycle. Just imagine if that were the case and prisons had already improved educational opportunities (in addition to better nutrition and more than one weekly allowed shower) before Attica.
Besides the need for the prison system to be revised to actually help people instead of punishing them, the imprisonment rate (as has already been mentioned in the comments) in the US is disproportionately high. And, frankly, that is unacceptable. Either the US is putting people behind bars for the wrong reasons or this indicates a social problem across the country. Perhaps both.
While Attica was a terrible tragedy, I believe a lot of the fault lies with the "indiscriminant shooting" of prisoners and guards alike that the NY state government approved. How can a government shoot down its own citizens? This is an encounter that ought to terrify law-abiding and criminal Americans.

9 Things That Will Disappear In Our Lifetime...

Whether these changes are good or bad depends in part on how we adapt to them. But, ready or not, here they come:

1. The Post Office. Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. E-mail, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail everyday is junk mail and bills..

2.The Check. Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with checks by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process checks. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual demise of the check. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail, the post office would absolutely go out of business.

3. The Newspaper. The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper. They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and the major cell phone companies to develop a model for paid subscription services.

4. The Book. You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages. I said the same thing about downloading music from iTunes. I wanted my hard copy CD. But I quickly changed my mind when I discovered that I could get albums for half the price without ever leaving home to get the latest music. The same thing will happen with books. You can browse a bookstore online and even read a preview chapter before you buy. And the price is less than half that of a real book. And think of the convenience! Once you start flicking your fingers on the screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can't wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you're holding a gadget instead of a book

5. The Land Line Telephone. Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge against your minutes

6. Music. This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading. It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. The record labels and the radio conglomerates are simply self-destructing. Over 40% of the music purchased today is "catalog items," meaning traditional music that the public is familiar with. Older established artists. This is also true on the live concert circuit. 7. Television. Revenues to the networks are down dramatically. Not just because of the economy. People are watching TV and movies streamed from their computers. And they're playing games and doing lots of other things that take up the time that used to be spent watching TV. Prime time shows have degenerated down to lower than the lowest common denominator. Cable rates are skyrocketing and commercials run about every 4 minutes and 30 seconds. I say good riddance to most of it. It's time for the cable companies to be put out of our misery. Let the people choose what they want to watch online and through Netflix.

8. "Things" That You Own. Many of the very possessions that we used to own are still in our lives, but we may not actually own them in the future. They may simply reside in "the cloud." Today your computer has a hard drive and you store your pictures, music, movies, and documents. Your software is on a CD or DVD, and you can always re-install it if need be. But all of that is changing. Apple, Microsoft, and Google are all finishing up their latest "cloud services." That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open something in the Internet cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to the cloud. And you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider. In this virtual world, you can access your music or your books, or your whatever from any laptop or hand held device. That's the good news. But, will you actually own any of this "stuff" or will it all be able to disappear at any moment in a big "Poof?" Will most of the things in our lives be disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and pull out the insert.

9.Privacy. If there ever was a concept that we can look back on nostalgically, it would be privacy. That's gone. It's been gone for a long time anyway. There are cameras on the street, in most of the buildings, and even built into your computer and cell phone. But you can be sure that 24/7, "They" know who you are and where you are, right down to the GPS coordinates, and the Google Street View. If you buy something, your habit is put into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those habits. And "They" will try to get you to buy something else. Again and again.

One of the 12 People Who Designed the Original IBM PC Says the Reign of the Personal Computer Is Coming to an End The Register

As the IBM personal computer marks its 30th anniversary, one of the 12 engineers who designed the original says the reign of the PC is about to end, the U.K. paper The Register reports.
Mark Dean, IBM's Middle East and Africa CTO, writes in a post on an IBM company blog: "They're going the way of the vacuum tube, typewriter, vinyl records, CRT and incandescent light bulbs."
"When I helped design the PC," Dean adds, "I didn't think I'd live long enough to witness its decline. But, while PCs will continue to be much-used devices, they're no longer at the leading edge of computing."
His observations, the story notes, echo those of Apple’s Steve Jobs, who has been widely quoted as saying, "We're living in a post-PC world." Dean says he now uses a tablet as his main computer, but he believes the focus in computing is shifting from devices to people’s interaction with them.

Okay, but I am sitting here with my 'refurbished' desktop and don't own an Applie Ipad or an Iphone because I'm POPOPOPO Poor and part of the digital divide, I guess.

On the other hand, I tend to skip the lemming approach to having every new gadget that comes out, patiently waiting for at least the third generation of it and the greatly reduced price. When I was in college, I wrote a story about the computer revolution called Space Baby and in it, the baby is microchipped, thus eliminating the need for any computers, since she could just 'be a computer.'

Companies hot to crack the mammoth Chinese market with its fast rising upper- and middle-classes will find video a ripe channel.

The Chinese spend four hours per week viewing videos, double that of U.S. citizens. It gets even better. In four years more than 700 million Chinese will be watching online video content, according to research conducted by the San Francisco-based management consulting firm McKinsey & Co.

Before you dive into the market, be aware of this cultural difference in U.S.-Sino video viewing preferences: While U.S. citizens are happy to consume the user-generated content that dominates YouTube , the Chinese prefer professionally made recordings.

Youku, one of China’s leading online video sites with 200 million monthly users, recently had a successful stock market debut. Its closest rival, Tudou, has 180 million monthly viewers.

While this all sounds like a lavish opportunity for U.S. companies, McKinsey’s research report urges caution. Although the market is growing at a furious pace, few companies are making money, McKinsey says. The firm’s research indicates that profits will eventually come, but only for players with the deepest pockets. Successful online video sites will need capital to:

Expand their bandwidth
Attract experienced online advertising salespeople, who are in short supply
Buy the content that will win the biggest audiences and the most advertising

“The single biggest future [cost] will be content, which used to come cheap – not least because so much of it was pirated,” the report says. “But the government is now attempting to enforce licensing rights, and companies considering initial public offerings in Hong Kong or the United States are keen to comply.”

Already, the competition is fierce in China, with about 200 online video sites jockeying for market advantage.

As the Earth rotates at 1,000 miles per second and orbits the sun at 25, 000 miles per hour, news travels fast on our planet. Journalism isn’t just yellow anymore –it creates a Doppler effect. Writers become a function of this hyperspace. “...Headline news, around the world every thirty minutes...”

One must catch this lightning in a bottle and write in hypertext (HTML), produce graphics, translate into several languages and ‘program’ for this speed-of-light information age. Or, if you like Einstein’s theory of relativity, time does not move in a straight line, sometimes moving backwards and forwards, and stopping dead in its tracks. Hence, the occupational hazards of documenting ‘reality.’

With the advent of the Digerati, or the ‘online’ cyber writers, everyone is publishing. The bluestocking ladies of yesteryear are today’s cybergrrls, and a ‘man of letters’ transmutes into ‘webmaster’ or ‘online editor’

The printing press, now digitized, allows anyone authorship via website, e-zine, and of course email. The democracy of web publishing is available to anyone willing to invest in a computer. The mouse is mightier than the sword. The post modern writer no longer writes, he transmits.

The ‘Digital Divide,’ the remaining populace without computers greatly troubles the lawmakers, but it seems all are willing to make the jump. People without computers, fear they are left out, and indeed they are. They sense the transponders, antennas, satellite links, and frequencies of the electrical grid that is our society.

Those on the side of the computer illiterate in the Digital Divide will surely lack the intellectual capital of the other. All have heard the hue and cry: “...Not since 1450 when Guttenberg invented movable type, has there been such a revolution in communication.... yadda, yadda, yadda. “

To Will Shakespeare, a mere writing table and quill pen sufficed. Today’s Shakespeare would be online with a stylus and PDA (personal digital assistant) and of course, have a producer, an agent, and an entertainment lawyer. Will needs DSL, a Digital Subscriber Line, a high-bandwidth technology, accessing the Internet 126 times faster than standard telephone modems. He could email his producer the rewrites on his latest play, which is produced on DVD. Enthralled by this new age, he devises a play called “To Be or Not to Be Digital ”

And, Will Shakespeare would be prescient enough to see what USA Today reported: Around 2030 or so, the computer may very well be filled with liquid instead of transistors and chips. It would be a ‘quantum’ computer, employing quantum mechanics, and possibly allow for teleportation (“Beam me up, Scotty”).

Further, this quantum computer would be a ‘data rocket’ using atoms to calculate instead of computer chips. Since an atom can be up and down at once, it's not just equal to one ‘bit,’ as in a traditional computer. Scientists call it a ‘Qubit. ‘

And, if you are still muddling through the Middle English of computing, then read Nicholas Negroponte’s “Being Digital,” to catch up.

So, what’s a space age Shakespeare to do? Write content, of course, burn CDs, distribute via a website, with streaming video, and keep an eye on merchandising for E-Commerce.

Then, of course, there’s the piracy on the Internet’s high seas. Shakespeare would have encoded digital signatures on all his works before electronically transferring any file. He would also have a technology attorney to protect his rights, and say, “first thing, let’s kill all the lawyers.”

As cyber stalking, slander, and smut proliferate, and lawmakers attempt to tax the Internet, new and mutant forms of attorneys will spawn. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) currently on the table will include Meta keywords and domain names. The legal ramifications are many.

Will Shakespeare’s publishers and agents police the Internet to protect their cash cow, and file suit accordingly. He had to form his own company, KingsMen.com and pay dearly for Shakespeare.com, and thus writes about the subversive cyber pirates who steal strange new commodities, selling them on Ebay Underground, the black market auction site.

Illicit copies of the script, “13th Night”, chronicling a cyber pirate queen, appeared everywhere on the net, and bootlegged copies of the video and music were downloaded. These cyber pirates wield not swords, but mouse, keyboard, and laptop, laments Shakespeare.

If you have not yet paid for ‘your name.com,’ you might suffer the legal wrangles of a Madonna whom after several years and many thousands of dollars finally recouped her name from a guy who used it to direct traffic to a porn site.

The push by the software and music recording industries, which say the web makes it easier to steal and redistribute their intellectual property, a struggling innovative software company like Naptster or MP3 becomes a snake pit of attorneys, all because of the democratic freedom of E-commerce and free E-nterprise.

Statistics show most E-mericans watch TV eight hours per day, and the rest of the time they are at the computer. There is very little off-line writing or reading anymore. A small minority still actually ‘read.’

There’s a big surge in the novel as CD-ROM, or E-book, narrated by audio, including graphics, video streaming and virtual reality interaction. But, with readership down, newspaper and magazine circulation dwindle. ‘Screening’ is way up.

The Internet looks and feels more like TV everyday. The national audience watches TV and mutters to themselves, “...I could write this @#$#. “ But of course, the unions have such a stranglehold on that medium. The Internet unions will likewise proliferate, eliminating the mass culture printing press, it was in its golden age.

But for now, the Internet, aside from digital signatures, and self-destructing bugs in computer programs, is still a free-for-all. It’s a brave new world stage, and we are mere actors upon it. Only it is a virtual reality, and, we, mere ghostly ‘cookies.’

Budget cuts thanks to the stalled economy have imperiled care for the mentally ill, left a new school building unstaffed, and perhaps most disastrously, limited efforts to keep nukes out of the hands of terrorists. And yet the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond is sitting on $1 billion in gold dollar coins it says the American public has little interest in using. Two reporters from NPR's Planet Money visited the facility where the coins are kept, in Baltimore, Md., and offer up a report about the stash of funds that the American public doesn't care for, Meanwhile, even as the coins gather dust, American taxpayers are paying top dollar (as it were) to store the surplus--and even to increase it.

The surplus of dollar coins is due in part to 2005 legislation introduced by then-Delaware GOP Rep. Mike Castle. In an effort to get the American public to adopt the coinage, Castle's bill mandated that the U.S. Mint produce coins commemorating every U.S. president (we're currently up to number 18, Ulysses S. Grant). In order to win broader support for the measure, Castle also agreed that 20 percent of the coins minted under the new bill would still feature the coin's previous figurehead, famed Native American figure Sacagawea.
And while casting money isn't the same as having it around to fund programs, switching Americans over to dollar coins has been sold as a money saving strategy--coins have a longer shelf life than bills, and according to a 2011 GAO report, converting to coins would save the government $5.5 billion over the next 30 years. However, that profit margin is largely made up of the difference between how much the coins cost to manufacture and the price at which they are then sold to the public, NPR notes--and the Federal Reserve has largely dismissed the case for dollar coins as a net gain for the government, noting that these kind of savings are not likely to translate into benefits to the larger economy.
Despite Castle's good intentions, the effort to get Americans to embrace dollar coins seems to be a failure. As NPR reports, the Federal Reserve's own report to Congress last year noted that three-fourths of all Americans are still resistant to the idea of a dollar coin. "The argument is about 50 years too late," anthropologist Jack Weatherford told NPR. "Coins have rapidly become less and less important in our society—like paper money itself is becoming less and less important."

Getting By Without The Middle Class – New York Times

The New York Times notes that both Big Business and Big Government seems to have resigned itself to Getting By Without The Middle Class.

In the “Capitalism” my parents knew, employees were considered “stakeholders”… now in today’s “Shareholder Capitalism” where only corporate executives and shareholders matter, employees are liabilities to be eliminated. As long as the CEO’s make their millions and the stock price goes up, to heck with the Middle Class.

The best form of revenge is to be your own stakeholder by having your own business.

The question is – what’s going to work for you?

If you have a service you can provide – “handyman”, yard clean up, hauling off junk (while recycling the valuable stuff), etc. Craiglist’s free ads are a great way to promote yourself. Get a Google Voice number so they don’t wake you up in the middle of the night!

Some small businesses have been built almost entirely from Craigslist advertising… they aren’t multi million dollar enterprises, but you only need to be able to give yourself breathing room.

Can you wash cars? Youth groups raise money all the time doing that. From what I can tell they never show their non profit credentials…could you do that to make some extra money one Saturday? Could you give a genuine proportion to a charity if you’re not a non profit to have a charitable angle?

What about carpet cleaning? Can you do a good job at that? If you can rent a carpet cleaner at a local store, you don’t have to invest anything until someone responds to your free advertisement. Just know in advance the cost of rental, the cost per square foot for cleaning supplies, etc. and you’ll know how to quote the job.

I was just talking to a man who got laid off and is trying to climb back up out of a financial hole. Like many he developed a strategy of turning lemons into lemonade.

He started driving a school bus – 2 hours work in the AM, 2 hours in the PM and some of these positions even have health benefits. He uses the time in the middle of the day and after his “run” to operate his business ventures.

There are many things you can do to start making extra money… the first step is to decide that you will not let yourself be the wage slave of Big Government or Big Business.

I got this quote in the email today and it was supposed to be inspirational, but of course, I took it negatively.

You see, we are 2 and a half years into the Great Recession. For me, it's going on since January, 2008. I've been in and out of work, I collected unemployment, it ran out, I took out a title loan on my car to pay the rent, received eviction notices, and had to pay eviction legal fees, and am currently on a payment plan with the I.R.S.

Yesterday, they pulled the plug on my cable TV.

Not to get all Shakespearean on you, but

And, I'm paraphrasing here...
but, it was Friday night, and I sat in front of the TV, staring blankly at the Black Screen of Death.

You see, I thought I could let the exhorbitant cable bill fly and bought one of those digital converter boxes, only I couldn't get an antenna signal and it didn't work. I thought I needed an antenna, but the wierdo at the Walmart said the converter box would suffice and took my $50.

Now, I have to go buy an antenna and hope that works. Only, I'm broke, unemployed, and possibly evicted.

However, being without television is quite an unnerving experience, I assure you. I knew I had an addiction. I would just turn the TV "ON," and putter about. But, I also realized this is my only company during the long hours of joblessness, and freaking out about being jobless.

I thought, well, I can read.
And, I can compute, learn something,
take a computer tutorial or something
read email,
surf the net,
find a job,
You Tube!

Only my Dell Optiplex, refurbished, with Windows XP, does something called 'buffering' when watching videos, and there's even a youtube video about that.

so, I didn't rent any movies for .99 since who wants to watch a video that starts and stops and charges my credit card 99 cents?

And, then my ISP got hacked and my personal email was hacked and I was paying the ISP a boatload of money every month to protect me from this happening. As a result of this hack, my email address book was hijacked and an email went out to God Knows Who, to "make $300 a day by inserting Links online," and I only found out about it, when my brother, a computer illiterate, likewise, jobless, calls me and asks me why this screen is 'buffering' and won't take his credit card. What?

He was about to pay some hacker/hijacker $100 for a job scam.

Disney is sayin' they're renovating the "It's a Small World" ride at Disneyland to introduce new characters, but what they're really trying to do is trim the fat ... people. The boats on the ride are the same old ones when the ride first debuted at the World's Fair in 1964.

Here's the prob -- 44 years and 20 billion Mickey D burgers later, America has become all blubber, and it's effing up the ride.Two hundred pounders and up were populating the boats, which increasingly began bottoming out and stopping the ride dead in its tracks. And anyone knows you can become certifiable listening to "that song" for more than three minutes.It became too embarrassing to escort passengers to dry land, explaining that the girth was just too much to bear.

Disney previously has denied the renovations have anything to do with weight issues.

Well, there was a royal wedding, Prince William bites the dust, but alas, he married a 'commoner' and does his bit to elevate the masses. Much ado about the Late Princess Di, and the very strange hats, the British ladies wear called "Fascinators" and I guess, they are very chi chic...but I don't get it.

This babe is some pop TV celebrity named Tonia Tomlinson and I liked the color but thought she looked very "Starship"

This picture shows Prince Andrew with Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and I don't know which is which, but great mockery was had at the pretzel on her head.

And, the Prince really outdid the Princess to be with his red military getup, but I understand it was a nod to the Irish, so I won't complain. So, in the middle of all the hoopla - BAM!

The Alabama Slammer... Tornados ravaged the South and the Weather just keeps getting stranger and stranger...But, people died...maybe 500 or more...

And, then Prez Obama appears on the final days of Oprah and says pretty much NOthing, and not 24 hours later, BAM! the Prez reveals that Special Ops have killed world renown terrorist, Osama Bin Laden, and the so very articulate newscasters kept mixing up Osama with Obama, but people cheered.

The Muslim extremist who lead a fatwa, or religious jihad against all of western civilization and caused two wars and an international manhunt lasting 10 years. Turns out, he was living large in Pakistan. Now, given that the US gives billions of dollars to Pakistan to keep them as our ally, they seem to be complicit in 'harboring' the fugitive.

But, the survivors of 9/11 were relieved as were all of us. Al Quada, the terrorist outfit that Osama started or propelled in our consciousness, is still around, but I think the anti terrorist tactics of the Americans may have cut them down enough to keep a reasonable stability in the world, until the next terror group appears....which may be lead by Donald Trump.
