First album nearly finished...

Well, when I first started recording the album in September 2009, I didn't expect it was going to take 2 years...But I'm not sorry its taken this long. I have learned a tremendous amount about singing, production and technical issues I would never have learnt otherwise.

My voice has improved a LOT and my song writing abilities went up a few notches as well. Experience is the best teacher. You never know everything and you should never think you do - it only limits your potential!

I'm very greatful that I have a producer who's honest and a perfectionist - he has taught me more than I could ever teach myself. We're expecting to have the album finished very soon, with final vocals being recorded this week. I expect post production to start next week and then final mixing and mastering.

We're almost there and I can't wait!

I don't like to label myself into a specific genre and being bilingual (Afrikaans and English speaking) I've also written some songs in Afrikaans. I hope to release an Afrikaans album in the future, amongst many other albums I'd like to release.
For this reason I've released a free download of my song "Dans met My" as my first Afrikaans "dance" song.

"These Days" is one of my compositions that will not be featuring on the album I hope to release before the end of 2010. I decided to share it with you and have released it as a free download. The song was recorded at my home studio.

Update on my first CD

Update on my CD - Its been a while and I've learnt a LOT!! ;-) I understand now why it takes some artists 2 years to record an album...Anyway, hopefully it won't take me that long (touch wood!!) Being the control freak that I am, I want it the best it can be. On the production side I have been exceptionally blessed ...to have a very talented, pitch perfect and perfectionist producer!! I don't want to use autotune and I want the feeling of my voice to be in all my songs and he has really helped me to achieve this. Also I'd like to thank Andrew Roman for including the amazing bass lines in my songs - you rock! We're getting there and I can't wait for the album's completion. I really believe its going to be something very special. Thank you.

Well, its been a while in the making and now finally my first CD is on its way to seeing the light!! I have teamed up with a fantastic production company, Scherzo Productions, who are producing my first album.

I will begin recording vocals soon and will keep you updated on the progress of the album....watch this space!

How to write a meaningful song

I started writing songs at age 15. My first song was called "My heart beats for you" and I suppose at that young age the top priority is "love" so that was my focus point. I think when you write a song, you have to "feel" what you're writing about, same goes for singing a song. It just sounds better when it is performed with emotion. I don't have a "set" formula for writing songs. Sometimes I hear a tune in my head, sometimes I dream about them. Or I could be sitting at my keyboard just "playing" and suddently a melody will come. Sometimes the lyrics come first! I go with the flow. Whenever I write a song, I try to write something meaningful. 10 years from now I want people to remember them... Basic song structure. This is what I was taught about song structure (this can change depending on the genre and mood of the music) 1. Intro (usually instrumental) 2. First verse (usually 4-6 lines that flow well together, like a poem - introduction to the "song story") 3. Chorus or "hook" (this is the part of the song that repeats, to "hook" people to listen to it - repetition stays in the mind and becomes familiar, which makes people want to listen again adds emphasis to the "story of the song") 4. Second verse (same as first verse - tell more about the story) 5. Chorus or "hook" again 6. Musical interlude (break in the song for added emphasis - can be instrumental or vocal) 7. Verse three (ending the story) (optional if verse two didn't cover the ending) 8. Chorus or "hook" again 9. Ending - usually instrumental 10. Most songs are a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 7 minutes long (to hold interest) again, this depends on genre too. Many songs don't follow the basic structure exactly, and some songs can have 4 or more verses, depending on the "message" the author wants to carry across. The basic structure works though. How to choose meaningful lyrics. 1. Write about something you know about or have experienced. 2. Write about a "feeling" you have experienced, a dream you've had, something that touched you - invariably, someone out there has also had a similar experience and people can identify with you. 3. Write something which makes you remember, makes you laugh, makes you cry. 4. Write something for someone you know, admire, love, trust, respect. 5. Write something that you would sing yourself. Writing a song is usually (for me) a personal reflection. I also like to write what I feel, so sometimes I'll write a love song, sometimes a soft rock song, sometimes a dance song. Unfortunately as with everything else in life, not everybody will like your songs, but there will be people who do.
