One of the things that I thought a lot about last year was when did I take a stand to say that “Sales and Marketing not only should work together better but they must for the survival of the business.” After much thought, the catalyst event came to mind. This event was so pivotal for me because I not only experienced a change in myself but I witnessed a change in my colleagues as well. So what happened?

I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things. — Mother Teresa

Many years ago I was attending a typical sales meeting. These meetings usually were put together to talk about the state of the business, allow people on the team to network, share best practices, etc. Sometimes these meetings were fruitful and allowed for colleagues to think about the business in a different way; many times even energizing folks to get out there and sell better. More often than not however, they were too frequent and a superfluous repetition of the same stuff we talked about in the last meetings.

This meeting, however, was different… little did I know. Our manager had invited someone from the Marketing team to come talk about a new initiative that they were launching aimed at helping Sales become more efficient in selling to customers. While the strategy was not groundbreaking for most marketers it was a concept that wasn’t really common in Sales. What this marketer did so eloquently was explain why the Marketing team thought using this framework was important for the company, how it would help Sales sell more efficiently, and how it could be implemented by each individual in the room as soon as the next day.

And that is when it hit me. This wasn’t just some new strategy mandated from the Ivory Tower of Marketing because they didn’t have anything else better to do, No, this was a tool that could actually help me do my job better. Now it made sense. And not only did it make sense for me but I could see it also made sense for my colleagues. There was an excitement after the presentation that was not typical for a sales meeting. My colleagues were asking questions and trying to figure out with which customers they were going to target first with this new tool. And the questions weren’t those “I just need to seem engaged so my boss thinks I care and that I’m a leader” questions. These were genuine questions to gain better understanding.

From this point on, I recognized the power of open dialogue between Sales and Marketing. What an opportunity to take advantage of! Each group has skills that are uniquely theirs and they should be celebrated, however when each group is able to understand more precisely how their actions impact the other group it creates a powerful synergy that leads to success.

Beginning the journey to Sales and Marketing alignment doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. It can begin with something as simple as a conversation to share ideas.

In knowledge intensive work, the human perspective is paramount. In recognition of increased individuality in work cultures, the most forward-thinking companies are now renaming their HRM HC (for Human Capital). As capital is invested instead of consumed like resources, the new name reflects a renewed view on the relationship between the employee and employer. Employees are not a resource to be used up but an investment that grows in value. Or perhaps the employee is seen as investing time and know how in the value creation of the firm.
Viewing employees as a resource makes the relationship between the employee and employer exploit. Viewing employees as capital redefines this relationship as investment. If the goal of work is to create something new, success lies in creating organizational relationships that support this kind of thinking.
It may seem nit-picky to get hung up on terminology. Surely no one actually thinks of employees as something to exploit. But the thing is that language is a reflection of culture. Words carry history and always convey more than their intended meaning. In striving for release from dated definitions of human interaction in work cultures, a lot of ground can be covered simply by recognizing poor vocabulary and changing the way things are defined.
How should we then describe the relationship between employer and employee in modern, learning-centered organizations? The answer lies in thinking about how value is created in information intensive work. In fact, the relationship between employer and employee is only one of many important ones. The value of work is created in a multitude of different interpersonal settings that transcend organizational boundaries. The employee is no longer subservient to or dependent on the employer. Rather, there is mutual dependence between many individuals taking part in value creation. The employee needs the organization just as much as the organization needs the employee. The customer needs the organization just as much as the organization needs the customer.
As the requirements and content of work have dramatically changed, so has the meaning of what it is to be an employee. Individual learning is a prerequisite for value creation in knowledge intensive work. The role of the employee is not to obey orders but to create value through development of thought. The responsibility of the employee is to find the best conditions for learning, the best boss to learn from, the best pal to work with. The role of work processes is not to try to minimize human error but provide room for thought. Human error itself, development of thought and learning are at the core of knowledge intensive work. The traditional role and meaning of the employee has become obsolete and the typical definitions of the employee-employer relationship along with it.
What to call employees then? How to properly rename HR? The point is that the most important aspect of work relationships is context. All structures that predefine work relationships may limit them only to certain contexts and decrease the potential that each individual has to interact, learn and create value. It is also of utmost importance exactly who chooses to do the work and whom they choose to work with in each given situation. Value is tied to learning, which is tied to personal meaning. The best expert on how individual learning, experience of meaning and fruitful collaboration at work happen is the individual herself. An organization wanting to recognize the importance of context and the importance of the individual could choose to get rid of all titles or predefinitions of interpersonal structure that are contained in traditional work roles, departments and other organizational structures. What are we left with then? What do you call this organization, how do you define it? Maybe just people, working together?
Well it’s not as simple as that, of course. You need to start with the fruit of the cacao tree, which contains the beans that can be transformed into chocolate. Guests visiting Epcot are getting a good look at the cacao tree when they experience Living with the Land or the Behind the Seeds tour. Our cacao trees, one of the more than 100 food crops that guests can see at The Land Pavilion, are in full bloom.

So how do you transform cacao beans into chocolate? The process has quite a few steps. It begins with cleaning and roasting the beans, then removing the shells. Next is the creation of the cocoa liquor, which, with cocoa butter and other ingredients like milk and butter — and a few more steps — becomes chocolate.

Historians tell us that chocolate played a special role in both the ancient Maya and Aztec cultures — for example, chocolate drinks were served during sacred ceremonies. And although cocoa is originally from the Americas, today western Africa produces almost two-thirds of the world’s cocoa.

Just as we were all settling in front of the television to watch the baseball playoffs, two new studies about the perils of sitting have spoiled our viewing pleasure.

The research, published in separate medical journals this month, adds to a growing scientific consensus that the more time someone spends sitting, especially in front of the television, the shorter and less robust his or her life may be.

To reach that conclusion, the authors of one of the studies, published in the October issue of The British Journal of Sports Medicine, turned to data from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study, a large, continuing survey of the health habits of almost 12,000 Australian adults.

Along with questions about general health, disease status, exercise regimens, smoking, diet and so on, the survey asked respondents how many hours per day in the previous week they had spent sitting in front of the television.

Watching television is not, of course, in and of itself hazardous, unless you doze off and accidentally slip from the couch onto a hard floor. But television viewing time is a useful, if somewhat imprecise, marker of how much someone is engaging in so-called sedentary behavior.

“People can answer a question like, ‘How much time did you spend watching TV yesterday?’ much better than a question like ‘How much time did you spend sitting yesterday?’ ” says Dr. J. Lennert Veerman, a senior research fellow at the University of Queensland, who led the new study.

Australians, as it turns out, watch lots of telly. According to the survey data, in 2008, the year that the researchers chose as their benchmark, Australian adults viewed a collective 9.8 billion hours of television.

Using complex actuarial tables and adjusting for smoking, waist circumference, dietary quality, exercise habits and other variables, the scientists were next able to isolate the specific effect that the hours of sitting seemed to be having on people’s life spans.

And the findings were sobering: Every single hour of television watched after the age of 25 reduces the viewer’s life expectancy by 21.8 minutes.

By comparison, smoking a single cigarette reduces life expectancy by about 11 minutes, the authors said.

Looking more broadly, they concluded that an adult who spends an average of six hours a day watching TV over the course of a lifetime can expect to live 4.8 years fewer than a person who does not watch TV.

Those results hold true, the authors point out, even for people who exercise regularly. It appears, Dr. Veerman says, that “a person who does a lot of exercise but watches six hours of TV” every night “might have a similar mortality risk as someone who does not exercise and watches no TV.”

These rather unnerving results jibe with those of another new study of sitting. Published on Monday in the journal Diabetologia, its authors reviewed data from 18 studies involving 794,577 people. Many of the studies measured full-day sitting time, covering not only hours whiled away in front of the television, but also time spent in a chair at work.

Together, those hours consumed a majority of a person’s life. “The average adult spends 50 to 70 percent of their time sitting,” the authors report.

The researchers then cross-referenced sitting time with health outcomes, and found that those people with the “highest sedentary behavior,” meaning those who sat the most, had a 112 percent increase in their relative risk of developing diabetes; a 147 percent increase in their risk for cardiovascular disease; and a 49 percent greater risk of dying prematurely — even if they regularly exercised.

“Many of us in modern society have jobs which involve sitting at a computer all day,” says Dr. Emma Wilmot, a research fellow at the University of Leicester in England, who led the study. “We might convince ourselves that we are not at risk of disease because we manage the recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day.”

But, she says, we “are still at risk if we sit all day.”

Why a seemingly blameless activity like sitting should be detrimental to health, even for those of us who work out, is not fully understood, although it is assiduously being studied at many labs.

One partial explanation, however, is obvious. “The most striking feature of prolonged sitting is the absence of skeletal muscle contractions, particularly in the very large muscles of the lower limbs,” says David W. Dunstan, a professor at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Australia, senior author of the Australian study, and a pioneer in the study of sedentary behavior.

When muscles don’t contract, they require less fuel, and the surplus, in the form of blood sugar, accumulates in the bloodstream, contributing to diabetes risk and other health concerns.

Thankfully, excessive sitting is theoretically easy to combat. First, cut TV time. “The evidence indicates that four hours per day is in the ‘risky’ category,” Dr. Dunstan says, “while less than two hours per day is in the lower-risk group.”

Then look to the rest of your day. When Dr. Wilmot asked a group of volunteers recently to reduce their daily sitting time by an hour, “they came up with lots of ideas,” she says, including “putting the garbage bin on the other side of the office, standing during coffee breaks and telephone calls, having standing meetings, standing on the bus.”

But don’t, she emphasizes, cease exercising. “There is absolutely no doubt that exercise is beneficial for health,” she says. It just may not, by itself, be sufficient for health.

Research published in the recent issue of Biology of Reproduction Papers-in-Press reports that 75 grams (approximately 2.5 ounces) of walnuts consumed per day improved sperm vitality, motility, and morphology (normal forms) in a group of healthy young men between 21-35 years of age. These findings are of particular interest to the 70 million couples worldwide who experience sub-fertility or infertility. In fact, 30 – 50% of these cases are attributed to the male partner, and in the United States the prevalence of men seeking help for fertility is estimated at ~3.3 – 4.7 million[1].

This research suggests that walnuts provide key nutrients that may be essential in male reproductive health. According to Professor Wendie Robbins, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., who led the research at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Nursing, “the positive finding of walnuts on sperm may be a result of their unique nutrient profile.” Walnuts are the only nut that are an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid[2] (ALA) – the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, and this study reported higher amounts of ALA provided by walnuts correlated with less frequent aneuploidy or abnormal cell sperm chromosome numbers which can result in genetic abnormalities such as Down syndrome.

In addition to ALA, walnuts have high antioxidant content, along with numerous micronutrients that Dr. Robbins thinks may work together synergistically. Co-investigator and UCLA Associate Professor of Medicine and Nursing Dr. Catherine Carpenter believes that “these findings are not surprising when you look at the nutritious content of walnuts, however the results are amazing considering the impact they might have on men of all ages, including older men, and men with impaired fertility.”

Throughout history, food has been linked with human reproductive success; however most of the emphasis has been on the maternal diet and very little focus has been given to the paternal diet. According to Dr. Robbins, science is suggesting that a father’s diet not only impacts fertility, but can also influence the health of the child and future generations. Citing a review of the science in this area, Dr. Robbins commented that, “diet is not just maternal territory anymore.”[3] It appears the nutrition status of fathers can be passed down transgenerationally and affect the health of generations to come. “Healthy diet and nutrition are essential for reproductive health,” commented registered dietitian and father Milton Stokes. Based on this research, he would advise his male clients trying to have children to include walnuts in their diet on a daily basis to promote healthy offspring.

Improvements in cardiovascular risk factors and endothelial function from walnuts are well documented. The young men eating walnuts in the study conducted by Dr. Robbins experienced improved blood lipid profiles which reinforces these previous studies and provides one more reason to include walnuts in the daily diet.

This randomized, parallel two-group dietary intervention trial evaluated the effect of 75 grams of walnuts/day on semen quality. The study included 117 healthy young men who routinely eat a Western-style diet. Approximately half consumed the 75 grams of walnuts per day for 12 weeks, while the remaining half served as the control group. After 12 weeks, compared to the control group, the walnut group experienced improvement in sperm vitality, motility, and morphology – key components in male fertility.
NASA’s New York–Based Space Institute the Hub of Climate-Change Research

The NASA Goddard Institute for Space Research sits anonymously above a ‘Seinfeld’ landmark, doing ground-breaking work on climate change, including a study released this week that links human activity to recent U.S. wildfires and tornadoes.

Anybody who watched Seinfeld would recognize Tom’s Restaurant in upper Manhattan as one of the hit show’s landmarks. Almost nobody knows that during all the time Seinfeld was aired, and to this very day, the scientists of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies led by Dr. James Hansen, were laboring directly upstairs from Tom’s, pursuing what may prove to be one of the most important investigations of our time

Jerry Seinfeld’s TV comedy was famously called a show about nothing, yet millions still watch the reruns 14 years after its final episode. Hansen’s continuing work is about something as important as global warming, but the public barely seemed to notice the new study he and his co-author released this week regarding the recent extremes in temperature.

Never mind that the study, “Perception of Climate Change,” links global warming—and therefore human activity—to the record-breaking droughts and wildfires of late, along with the unusually intense thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Never mind that global warming appears to be triggering a kind of global derangement.

Forests burn, crops die, roads buckle, trees topple, power grids strain. One nuclear power plant nearly shut down because its cooling water is too hot to cool. Another discovers that the river level is falling to where there will be no water. Greenland’s ice melts at more than twice the usual rate, causing an iceberg the size of Manhattan to break off and drift into the sea.

And when an eminent scientist presents a convincing case that we are complicit in it all, we pay less attention than to a Seinfeld episode that has aired so many times that fans can speak the lines along with the characters.

The latest paper from the 71-year-old Hansen was presented Monday in a conference room at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, two blocks up Broadway from the little known Goddard Center and the world-famous Tom’s. Some press outlets that might have paid more attention were busy covering the latest mass shooting, this one by a white supremacist in a Sikh temple outside Milwaukee.

Hansen brought along a pair of oversized dice he made almost a quarter-century ago, right after he testified before the U.S. Senate and introduced the country to a concept called global warming. He realized after he left the Capitol that summer day in 1988 that he would need a way to explain why his thesis was not disproved by the occasional season that was cooler than usual.

Hansen colored the sides of the dice, some white to represent normal temperatures, others blue to represent cooler than normal, others red to represent unusually warm.

Dice representing the period prior to 1980, when global warming did not yet have a significant effect, would have two white sides, two blue and two red. Rolling them over time would have produced an average variation in temperatures.

That has changed even more rapidly than Hansen predicted so long ago that Seinfeld was still a year from premiering.

“Four and a half sides of the dice are now red,” he said Monday.

There still remained a chance of a cooler-than-normal season, but the odds were significantly greater that it would be warmer.

“The dice are loaded,” Hansen said.

And, with that also came an increased chance of extreme heat.

Prior to 1980, between 0.1 and 0.2 percent of the planet suffered extreme heat. That has now risen to 10 percent. So, while the average temperature has risen a seemingly unalarming 1.5 degrees over the past century, the average area of the globe hit by extremes has increased some 100-fold in three decades.

Here is the math by which what we once might have called the storm of the century or the flood of the century or the fire of the century now seems to come every year. The incidence of extreme heat has grown to where Hansen has covered one of the red sides of the climate dice with a photo of a wildfire.

“I just put this on here this week,” he said Monday about the new die configuration whose significance is known only too well in this year in Colorado and Arizona and Oklahoma.

This happened to be the same day that another division of NASA landed a rover, dubbed Curiosity, on Mars. Hansen had started out in science studying planetary atmospheres, Venus in particular. He then came to realize that he would do better to concentrate on his own native Earth. He told the Senate 24 years ago that effects induced by increased levels of greenhouse gases would lead to climate changes that eventually would become apparent to everybody. “As we now see, it has,” he said Monday, sounding as if he took no pleasure at all in being so right.

When an eminent scientist presents a convincing case that we are complicit in it all, we pay less attention than to a Seinfeld episode.

A siren could be heard from the street outside—the sort you hear when you call in an emergency such as a heart attack or a house fire—or a maybe a mass shooting. None were wailing in response to Hansen’s warning that the well-being of the entire planet is at stake.

“This is change occurring in a decadal times scale,” Hansen said.

The siren faded into the sounds of the passing cars and buses that were themselves part of the emergency that Hansen’s paper described. Each passing vehicle was burning fossil fuel and adding to the blanket of carbon dioxide that is throwing our planet out of balance.

Hansen noted that instead of significantly curtailing fossil-fuel use, we are seeking new sources in oil sands and hydrofracking—efforts whose environmental impact extend significantly beyond their extraction to their use. He suggested that what we need to do is make the companies pay the true cost of these fuels. “An honest price,” he said.

That price is now coming to include multibillion-dollar droughts, wildfires, floods, and storms—“costs borne entirely by the public,” Hansen noted.

He suggested that if the public were reimbursed, citizens could use that money to defray the added cost of alternate sources of energy that could become more economical over time.

Sadly, there seems as much chance of that happening as Hansen getting a response if he called 911 to report an emergency that will be happening over the next decade, or two of three.

Whatever happens, however it goes, it seems almost certain that many decades from now, history will remember the building that housed Tom’s Restaurant less for Seinfeld and his show about nothing than as the place where Hansen presented the study that was about more than we fully realized.

Meanwhile, the day after Hansen’s study was released, word came of torrential rain in Manila and the worst flood in years.

Maybe there should be a Climate Dice board game, where all the players lose unless they acknowledge the science and work together for the genuine good of everybody.

Drinking too much coffee can give the average Joe the jitters, but scientists say caffeine may have the opposite effect on people with Parkinson's disease.

The Canadian study found that drinking between two and four cups of coffee a day can help control tremors, opening the door to new treatment options for the progressive neurodegenerative condition that affects more than 10,000 Kiwis.

Symptoms can include tremors, stiffness of muscles, depression, disturbance of normal sleep, fatigue and lack of sense of smell.

Parkinson's New Zealand chief executive Deirdre O'Sullivan said she was excited by the research but expressed caution at the small scale of the study.

The effect of caffeine on the healthy human brain was widely known but she had not heard any research into its effects regarding Parkinson's, she said.

Coffee could also lead to negative effects, so she said it was probably not wise for those suffering from the disease to dramatically increase their intake until more research had been done.

The study was one of the first in humans to show that caffeine can help with movement impairment in people who had the disease, said study author Ronald Postuma, of McGill University in Montreal.

Previous studies have found that people who drink caffeine are less likely to develop Parkinson's.

Sixty-one sufferers - whose symptoms included daytime sleepiness and some motor symptoms - were given either a caffeine supplement or placebo pill.

Members of the caffeine group were given 100 milligrams of caffeine twice a day for three weeks, then 200 milligrams twice a day for three weeks, which is the equivalent of between two and four cups of coffee a day.

After six weeks, the half that took the caffeine supplement experienced an improvement in their motor symptoms compared with the placebo group, Dr Postuma said.

"This was due to improvement in speed of movement and a reduction in stiffness."

Caffeine had borderline effects on sleepiness, and did not affect depression or night-time sleep quality in the study participants.

Dr Postuma said larger-scale studies need to be carried out over a longer period to clarify the caffeine-related improvements.

"Caffeine should be explored as a treatment option for Parkinson's disease. It may be useful as a supplement to medication and could therefore help reduce patient dosages."

The study was published yesterday in Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

New Study Suggests ORAC Relevance in Human Health Research

The study examined the association between dietary antioxidant intake and incidence of stroke in a cohort of more than 36,000 women. The ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) assay was used as the marker for total antioxidant capacity.

Jin Ji, PhD, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Brunswick Labs, remarked, “This encouraging study validates the usefulness of ORAC in biomedical research.” Dr. Ji noted that the correlation between ORAC-rich diets and positive health outcomes is consistent with other studies that have been published in recent years.

In response to the recent controversy about the ORAC method, Ji added, “To paraphrase Mark Twain, I think the news of ORAC’s demise was exaggerated.”

The ORAC assay is an in vitro chemistry method developed for commercial use by Brunswick Labs that measures the ability of substances to absorb peroxyl, a reactive oxygen species, or radical. It has been used for over a decade to help quantify the antioxidant capacity of active compounds in food sources and has become a popular way for consumer products companies to promote their products.

For a number of years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture maintained a public database of ORAC values for food items. It was removed earlier this year.

ORAC remains valuable for researchers and consumer products companies. David Bell, of Bell Advisory Services, said, “Researchers and consumers alike need a tool for representing the antioxidant capacity of foods, and ORAC is a valid and versatile option.”

Bell added that it is important to use ORAC appropriately and that Brunswick Labs provides guidance to its customers about the proper applications of ORAC.

Brunswick Labs reports that interest in ORAC has increased since the USDA removed the ORAC database from its website. In response, Brunswick plans to support the launch of a new public-service website that will provide ORAC data, scientific publications, and a discussion forum.

Anyone who has felt sluggish at work after a sleepless night or who has struggled with jet lag after a long flight can take comfort in knowing he or she is not alone.

A study on biological sleep clocks by researchers at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital, published in the July 26 edition of The Journal of Vision, found that the longer someone is awake while they are sleep-deprived, the slower their work production becomes.

The study had participants under conditions of sleep deprivation tested on activities such as finding information quickly and accurately on computer monitors, to determine how the lack of sleep affected their response time.

As participants were awake longer and their level of deprivation grew, their ability to find the information slowed, the researchers said.

Declining ability was also noticeable during biological night time, from midnight to 6 a.m, although study participants had no knowledge of time of day.

"The longer someone is awake, the more the ability to perform a task, in this case a visual search, is hindered, and this impact of being awake is even stronger at night," said Jeanne Duffy, an associate neuroscientist at Brigham and Women's and senior author on the study.

Researchers collected and analyzed data from 12 participants whose sleep was reduced over a month-long period.

For three weeks, participants were placed on 28-hour days with six hours of sleep, which gave them an average of 5.6 hours of sleep per night and mirrored the effects of chronic jet lag.

Another important finding, Duffy said, was that getting low amounts of sleep regularly creates a progressively negative change in performance over time.

The study's researched showed that during the first week of sleep deprivation, test speed only slowed about a second; by the third week of deprivation, it slowed by twice that.

The study did not find that accuracy declined with less sleep, but Duffy said prior studies had found time of day influences it; the later it gets, the more mistakes.

Duffy said that most Americans don't get enough sleep regularly. "Recognizing the important role that sufficient sleep quality and quantity play in health, safety, and performance could not only improve worker production, but also worker health and safety," she added.

NIH-funded study sheds light on risk of bariatric procedures

Adults who had a common bariatric surgery to lose weight had a significantly higher risk of alcohol use disorders (AUD) two years after surgery, according to a study by a National Institutes of Health research consortium.

Researchers investigated alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorders symptoms in 1,945 participants from the NIH-funded Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (LABS), a prospective study of patients undergoing weight-loss surgery at one of 10 hospitals across the United States. Within 30 days before surgery, and again one and two years after surgery, study participants completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification (AUDIT) test. The test, developed by the World Health Organization, identifies symptoms of alcohol use disorders, a condition that includes alcohol abuse and dependence, commonly known as alcoholism.

Study participants were categorized as having AUD if they had at least one symptom of alcohol dependence, which included not being able to stop drinking once started, or alcohol-related harm, which included not being able to remember, or if their total AUDIT score was at least 8 (out of 40).

About 70 percent of the study participants had Roux-en-Y (RYGB) gastric bypass surgery, which reduces the size of the stomach and shortens the intestine, limiting food intake and the body's ability to absorb calories. Another 25 percent had laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery, which makes the stomach smaller with an adjustable band. About 5 percent of the patients had other, less common weight-loss surgeries.

Among participants who had the RYGB procedure, 7 percent reported symptoms of alcohol use disorders prior to surgery. There was no significant increase in AUD one year after surgery. However, by the second year after surgery, 10.7 percent of patients reported symptoms of AUD, a relative increase of more than 50 percent compared to pre-surgical rates.

One in 8 LABS study participants reported having at least three drinks on a typical drinking day the second year after surgery. "This is concerning, given the negative impact heavy drinking may have on vitamin and mineral status, liver function and weight loss," said Dr. Wendy King, the study's lead author and an assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.

Although AUD prior to surgery was one of the strongest predictors of AUD after surgery, more than half of study participants with AUD after surgery did not report having the condition during the year before surgery.

Regular alcohol use before surgery —at least two drinks per week—was also independently related to a higher risk of postoperative AUD. In addition to prior AUD and drinking frequency, patients with less social support or who reported preoperative recreational drug use or smoking before surgery were more likely to report symptoms of AUD after surgery. Men and younger adults were also more likely to develop AUD. Depressive symptoms, mental health treatment, and binge eating prior to surgery were not independently related to an increased likelihood of AUD after surgery.

"The study results suggest that clinicians should be aware of the importance of monitoring for signs and symptoms of AUD and consider counseling after bariatric surgery" said Dr. Mary Horlick, project scientist for LABS at the NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

Previous studies suggesting that bariatric surgery may increase the risk for alcohol use disorders were small, retrospective and used a variety of assessment methods. "This first prospective study of AUD symptoms before and after surgery was done in a large number of people from 10 hospitals across the United States, using a validated and reliable alcohol use screening method," said Horlick.

Study results will be posted on the Journal of the American Medical Association's website on June 18 and presented at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery meeting in San Diego the same day. The study also will appear in JAMA's June 20, 2012, print issue.

The prevalence of bariatric surgery to treat obesity has increased dramatically with the use of less-invasive laparoscopic techniques and availability of additional surgical procedures. More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese (having a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher), and almost 6 percent are extremely obese, defined as a BMI of 40 or more. BMI is a measure of weight in relation to height.

Initially, bariatric surgery was reserved for people with a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher with a serious health problem. Mounting evidence that supports the surgery's effectiveness in helping people shed pounds, reverse risk factors for heart disease, and in some cases, reverse type 2 diabetes, has led doctors to consider it as a therapy for people with less severe obesity.

"These findings show that there is much more to learn about bariatric surgery and how it influences a patient's health and well-being" said NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers. "It is important that patients and their doctors be fully aware of short- and long-term benefits and risks of bariatric surgery. We hope the LABS results will help researchers identify clinical questions that require further research, including better understanding of the risk of AUD."
Unhealthy foods, such as sweets and chips, are more appealing to people who haven't had enough sleep, new research suggests.

When researchers examined the areas of the brain that were most active when people were looking at healthy or unhealthy foods, they found the reward centers of the brain were activated when sleep-deprived study volunteers saw pictures of unhealthy foods.

"We found regions associated with reward and motivation -- those that are involved with addiction and pleasure-seeking behaviors -- were more strongly activated in the short-sleep phase," said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, a research associate at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center and an assistant professor at Columbia University's Institute of Human Nutrition in New York City.

Findings from the study are scheduled for presentation Sunday at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies annual meeting in Boston.

A second small study from the same meeting didn't find a large difference in the activation of the brain's reward centers in people who were tired. The researchers from the University of California, Berkeley did, however, find significantly impaired activity in an area in the frontal lobe of the brain. This area of the brain helps control behavior and make complex choices. When people were sleep-deprived and then presented pictures of unhealthy foods, this area of the brain didn't respond well, which would make choosing healthy foods more difficult.

The study included 16 healthy young adults who underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) once after a full night of sleep and then again after 24 hours of sleep deprivation. They were asked to rate their desire for 80 different foods during each test.

St-Onge's study included 25 normal-weight men and women who underwent fMRI after five nights of restricted sleep (four hours a night) and then again after five nights of being allowed to sleep for nine hours.

While they were in the fMRI scanner, they were shown pictures of healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables and oatmeal; unhealthy foods, such as candy or pepperoni pizza; and nonfood items, such as office supplies.

They found that unhealthy foods activated areas of the brain considered reward centers only in people whose sleep was restricted. When the same people were allowed to rest a full night, they had no such activation in the brain's reward center when they saw the unhealthy foods.

"I think it's related to cognitive control," St-Onge explained. "Your guard is somewhat down when you're tired and sleep deprived. Even though you know you probably shouldn't eat certain foods, when you're tired you might just decide to go for it."

Registered dietician Samantha Heller said she was not surprised by the studies' findings.

"It makes sense that when you are fatigued, your body would want calorie-dense foods that give you quick energy," said Heller, clinical nutrition coordinator at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn. "In an evolutionary sense, doing so would provide an advantage because you do get a momentary lift when you eat."

In today's society, the foods people often turn to for a quick shot of energy are processed carbohydrates, rather than a piece of fruit. But, she said, that momentary lift from processed foods won't last long, and trying to eat to make up for sleep deprivation just won't work.

A better choice is to keep healthy foods around, in both your home and workplace, so it's easy to reach for a healthy option, Heller said.

St-Onge said a clear message from her study is that it's important to get enough sleep every night. She suggested between seven and eight hours nightly.

"This is especially important if you're trying to lose weight," she said, because you may choose the wrong foods if you don't get enough sleep.

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Study finds natural ruminant trans fats not harmful

Canadian scientists are joining with international colleagues to lead new insights into the health implications of different types of trans fat
The latest research builds on ground-breaking new knowledge on a special 'family' of natural trans fats that are produced by ruminant animals such as dairy and beef cattle, goats and sheep, and found in the milk and meat from these animals. The findings strengthen the evidence that, unlike industrial trans fats, these natural ruminant trans fats are not harmful and may in fact have health-enhancing potential.

The key findings were presented at the 10th Congress for the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids & Lipids (ISSFAL), May 26-30 in Vancouver.

"We are learning there is a very important public health message to convey about ruminant natural trans fats and how these are different from the industrial trans fats that have been targeted as harmful to health," says Dr. Spencer Proctor, Director of the Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases Laboratory at the University of Alberta in Canada. "The research indicates that consuming these natural trans fats as part of a balanced diet is not a health concern. On the contrary, there is increasing evidence these are 'good fats' and could be fundamentally health-enhancing. They should not be an unintended target of the bid to rid the diet of trans fats."

ISSFAL is an International Scientific Society established in 1991, with members from more than 40 countries including scientists, medical professionals, educators, administrators, communicators and others with an interest in the health effects of dietary fats, oils and lipids. Among a number of key functions, ISSFAL has taken on an important role in interpreting the new facts in each of these areas into sound nutritional advice for the public.

Proctor chaired a Symposium at the ISSFAL Congress that focused on the health implications of natural ruminant trans fatty acids. Also presenting supporting findings were Dr. Jean-Michel Chardigny, National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), France; and Dr. Marianne Uhre Jakobsen, Associate Professor, Public Health, Aarhus University, Denmark.

The research to date is based on a strong foundation of animal model studies as well as a growing number of human studies, say these scientists. "Our knowledge of natural trans fats is relatively recent and we will continue to learn more about the human health implications," says Chardigny. "But clearly we know they are different from industrial trans fats and should not be painted with the same brush."

As a leading example, Chardigny presented findings of his meta-analysis of 13 human intervention studies that have examined the impact of natural trans fats on cardiovascular health risk factors. While there is a large body of research confirming detrimental effects of industrial trans fats, the research to date on natural trans fats has revealed no such effects.

"There is no association between natural trans fats intake and cholesterol-dependent cardiovascular risk factors," says Chardigny.

This conclusion was further supported by Jakobsen's review of observational epidemiologic studies. "The findings indicate that intake of natural trans fats is not associated with coronary heart disease within the range of intake in the general population."

The scientific knowledge points to the need to clearly differentiate between natural and industrial trans fats on food labels and in health recommendations, say these scientists. At meetings in and around ISSFAL they and colleagues are exploring approaches for further international collaboration among researchers as well as health and food regulatory authorities to make progress on this front.

"We want to help the public better understand the very different health implications of the two different categories of trans fats, including through the nutrition information they get on food labels," says Proctor. "We're confident we can achieve that by continuing to work together."
Soy-based products are gaining in popularity – and not just among vegetarians who look to soy products to provide protein in the diet.

The humble soybean boasts some extraordinary nutritional benefits. Soy is the only vegetarian source of complete protein. This means that soy supplies all the essential amino acids – the building blocks that must be supplied by the diet because the body cannot manufacture them. In fact, the quality of soy protein is as good as animal sources of protein such as meat, eggs or milk products.

Protein is vital to life – our bodies require protein to manufacture muscle tissue, hormones, enzymes and other essential materials to keep the body functioning properly. And, adequate dietary protein helps keep hunger at bay.

Like other plant foods, soybeans contain naturally-occurring, beneficial phytonutrients in the form of compounds called isoflavones. Isoflavones are found in other beans, too, but soybeans are the richest source of these substances which can function as antioxidants.

Since animal sources of protein contain cholesterol – and plant foods do not – soy products like soy milk, tofu, tempeh, soybeans (edamame) and soy meat substitutes provide high quality protein without cholesterol.

Isolated soy protein is a high quality protein that is derived from soybeans. All the fat and carbohydrate has been removed from the soybeans, leaving a protein powder that can be incorporated into a variety of foods.

In 1999, the FDA issued a health claim for soy which stated that “25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease”.

It has been observed that the risk of certain health conditions appears to be lower in countries where soy consumption is relatively high, and scientific research is ongoing to discover more about the health benefits of soy.

While the research continues, we can enjoy one of nature’s healthiest plants that has been a staple in the Chinese diet for over 5,000 years. A food that’s high in protein, cholesterol-free, and antioxidant rich - what more could you ask for?

Tart cherries may help reduce chronic inflammation, especially for the millions of Americans suffering from debilitating joint pain and arthritis, according to new research from Oregon Health & Science University presented today at the American College of Sports Medicine Conference (ACSM) in San Francisco, Calif.(1) In fact, the researchers suggest tart cherries have the "highest anti-inflammatory content of any food" and can help people with osteoarthritis manage their disease.

In a study of twenty women ages 40 to 70 with inflammatory osteoarthritis, the researchers found that drinking tart cherry juice twice daily for three weeks led to significant reductions in important inflammation markers - especially for women who had the highest inflammation levels at the start of the study.

"With millions of Americans looking for ways to naturally manage pain, it's promising that tart cherries can help, without the possible side effects often associated with arthritis medications," said Kerry Kuehl, M.D, Dr.PH., M.S., Oregon Health & Science University, principal study investigator. "I'm intrigued by the potential for a real food to offer such a powerful anti-inflammatory benefit - especially for active adults."

Often characterized as "wear and tear" arthritis, osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. Athletes are often at a greater risk for developing the condition, given their excessive joint use that can cause a breakdown in cartilage and lead to pain and injury, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

The inflammation benefits could be particularly important for athletes, according to Kuehl's previous research. In a past study he found that people who drank tart cherry juice while training for a long distance run reported significantly less pain after exercise than those who didn't.(2)

Go Red Instead to Manage Pain

Along with providing the fruit's bright red color, the antioxidant compounds in tart cherries - called anthocyanins - have been specifically linked to high antioxidant capacity and reduced inflammation, at levels comparable to some well-known pain medications.(3)

Previous research on tart cherries and osteoarthritis conducted by researchers at Baylor Research Institute found that a daily dose of tart cherries (as cherry extract) helped reduce osteoarthritis pain by more than 20 percent for the majority of men and women.(4) And the same compounds linked to cherries' arthritis benefits have now shown promise for athletes and sports recovery to help relieve muscle and joint soreness.

According to Director of Sports Nutrition at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center for Sports Medicine, Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, CSSD, LDN, who has incorporated tart cherries into the training menu of both her professional athletes and active clients as a natural and easy way to manage pain that also tastes great, "Why not eat red when there's so much science to support the anti-inflammatory benefits of this Super Fruit? And for athletes whose palates prefer the tart-sweet flavor profile of tart cherries, it's the optimal ingredient."

Available every day of the year in dried, frozen and juice forms, tart cherries are a versatile ingredient to include in any training or inflammation-fighting diet.

Moist yogurt cake with tart cherries

You’ll need:3 eggs
1 cup of plain yogurt
3
cups of all purpose flour
1 ¾ cups sugar
½ cup oil
2 Tsp baking
powder
2 Tsp vanilla sugar
About 2 cups of tart cherries(
no more, or everything will collapse, and will not bake evenly),I use the frozen
ones (thawed, of course).

Get ready beforehand. Measure all ingredients in separate bowls, and
have a baking dish ready; I use 9x13 inch square one. Preheat oven to 395
F.
Add baking powder to flour, and mix well, this will assure that it is
evenly incorporated.
Place cherries in their own bowl, and add about 2 Tbsp
of flour, and shake them, so they get coated with flour, this is very important.

Now, with a hand mixer, mix eggs, sugar, and vanilla sugar. Then add
yogurt, and oil, and mix well. Gradually add flour mixed with baking powder, and
again, mix well. Now you have the base; nice, medium thick, kind of like muffin
batter. Add the cherries, and fold them in gently, and as evenly as you can,
don’t overdo it. Transfer to a baking dish, and gently even it out. Bake for
about 30-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean,
and it‘s nice and golden in color. Dust with powdered sugar.

Healthy Breakfast
Start your day right! Breakfast is important because it kick-starts your metabolism and provides energy for you to use throughout your day.

TIP: Healthy Breakfast, Healthy Choice
For breakfast, enjoy a Formula 1 shake made with nonfat milk, fruit and Personalized Protein Powder, according to your needs.

Three Steps to Achieve Nutrition

Nutrition and Hydration – Everything you put into your body affects how you look and feel. For healthy aging, encourage your customers to:

Enjoy nutritious Herbalife® shakes

Drink plenty of water

Eat healthy, wholesome meals with lots of fruits and vegetables

Dietary Supplements – Most Americans don’t get their recommended daily allowance of nutrients. Taking Herbalife® supplements three times a day can help your customers add vitamins and fiber to their diets.

Proper Skincare – Skincare is especially important because very few antioxidants ingested in food make it to the surface of the skin. Recommend these skin health tips to your customers:

Apply Herbalife® Personal Care | Outer Nutrition products to cleanse, tone, moisturize and protect their skin

Personalize a skincare regimen by researching the complete Personal Care | Outer Nutrition line

New Studies Highlight Health Benefits of the Exceptional Cranberry
Experimental Biology Conference Debuts Five Abstracts that Provide Further Evidence that Cranberry Helps Promote Total Body Health

LAKEVILLE-MIDDLEBORO, Mass., May 17, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Recent results reported at Experimental Biology 2012 continue to build on the growing body of research on the cranberry's key role in total body health. For nearly three decades, many studies have confirmed the cranberry's urinary tract health benefits. Now, new research provides additional evidence of these benefits while also examining how the cranberry helps bolster immunity and antioxidant support. A summary of the abstracts are highlighted below.
Urinary Tract Health

With 15 million urinary tract infection (UTI) cases that occur in the United States annually, a new study from Jeffrey Blumberg at Tufts University evaluates the cranberry's role in promoting urinary tract health through compounds known as proanthocyanidins (PACs). The study confirmed the presence of unmetabolized PACs in the urinary tract after consumption, supporting a wealth of existing ex vivo research that highlights the potential benefits of the compounds found in cranberry juice.

While the benefits of cranberry juice are well-documented, a pilot study conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests Craisins(R) Dried Cranberries can provide the same benefits attributed to the reduction of recurring UTIs in women. In this study, women consuming one serving of dried cranberries per day for two weeks reported reduced urinary tract infections up to six months after the study. Today, UTIs account for 15 percent of all community-prescribed antibiotics at a cost of $500 million in prescription drug costs each year.

Immunity

"There is significant evidence surrounding the cranberry's unique health properties and contribution to total body health," said Susan Percival, Ph.D., Professor, Food Science & Human Nutrition, University of Florida, Gainesville. "While many people associate cranberry juice with improved urinary tract health, a growing number of new studies point to the cranberry's exceptional ability to support immunity."

Dr. Percival and her research team examined immunity in a cell culture model to understand the mechanisms of how cranberries may improve immunity. A previous human interventional study found immune cell enhancement was evident after eight weeks of consuming cranberry beverages. In the current study, they found that compounds in cranberries can help prime the immune system for activity, which can help protect the body's cells from a challenge. This is correlated with the amount of cranberry compounds used in the study.

"We have previously shown that people have fewer symptoms of colds and flu after cranberry consumption and that immune cell function is improved. Now, with this new model, we hope to learn the molecular reasons for the improvement," added Percival.

Antioxidant Support

According to the USDA, cranberries have more naturally occurring polyphenolic antioxidants per gram than other common fruit. Cranberries promote the activity of the body's natural antioxidant enzymes, which act to prevent the formation of damaging radicals. The study done by the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth examines this effect of promoting enzymic activity and finds a potential for health benefits because the effect of this increased enzyme activity is a generally lower inflammatory state of the body.

Researchers at Washington State University also explored the activities of these enzymes after subjects drank one of two different cranberry beverages or a placebo. Subjects consuming either cranberry beverage had significantly increased levels of the important antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) compared with the placebo. These two studies suggest that consuming cranberries may have protective effects on health by maintaining cellular health.

Taken together, these studies demonstrate the potential total body health benefits of cranberry products as part of a healthy diet. For more information, visit www.cranberryinstitute.com .
First Study Linking Geothermal Gas to Asthma

A three-year study in Iceland has found a linkage between geothermal gases and respiratory illnesses like asthma.
Published in the journal Environmental Research, the study compared respiratory illness in adults to daily air pollution levels in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The researchers measured respiratory illnesses by counting how many adults filled prescriptions for asthma-related medication each day between March 2006 and December 2009, as registered in the national health database limited to adults living near the capital city.
They then measured levels of air pollutants at a busy intersection in Reykjavik, including hydrogen sulfide produced by geothermal facilities outside the city.
The results showed that a one-hour peak in traffic pollutants would eventually lead to an increase in the number of adults filling prescriptions for asthma medications. On top of that, gradual increases in the daily average for hydrogen sulfide were also found to be linked to the number of adults filling out asthma-related prescriptions.
For both traffic and geothermal pollutants, increases in the number of adults filling prescriptions generally took place 3 to 5 days after increased exposure — given that such exposure levels do not necessarily result in immediate asthma attacks, that seems natural.
This is one of the first studies to directly link increases in asthma-related troubles with hydrogen sulfide, and will result in more research being undertaken in an effort to further understand the implications. Additionally, the study showed that short peaks in air pollutants may cause more harm to the human respiratory system than longer-term averages.
“A Controlled Trial of Protein Enrichment of Meal Replacements for Weight Reduction and Retention of Lean Body Mass.”
Leo Treyzon, Steve Chen, Kurt Hong, Eric Yan, Catherine Carpenter, Gail Thames, Susan Bowerman, He-Jing Wang, Robert Elashoff and Zhaoping Li - UCLA Center for Human Nutrition
What was the study about? This study enrolled 100 overweight people to examine the effects of two different levels of protein in the diet on their weight loss over a one-year period.
What did the study attempt to find out? The researchers wanted to see if the people taking in more protein would lose more weight than people taking in a more standard amount of protein. Since protein helps to maintain lean body mass, they also wanted to see if people on higher protein would lose more body fat than those people in the regular protein group, even if both groups ended up losing the same amount of weight.
What did the study subjects have to do? The subjects had to follow a diet that included two meal replacement shakes per day (Formula 1 with milk with one healthy meal and snacks). The subjects were evenly divided into two groups. One group–the high protein group–made their shakes with extra protein powder added (PPP). The other group–the placebo group-made their shakes with Formula 1, but added a placebo (look-alike) PPP powder that had no protein in it. The subjects did not know which group they were in.
What happened? Weight loss was about the same in both groups, but, as the researchers suspected, the people consuming more protein lost more body fat than the people consuming standard amounts of protein. Also, the study showed that meal replacement shakes are an effective way to lose weight.
Have the results been published yet? The results of the study have been published in the August 2008 issue of Nutrition Journal.
NOTE: A clinical study is a study that is conducted by a group of researchers on human subjects to answer a particular question or hypothesis.
An extensive questionnaire generated responses from more than 200 U.S. Herbalife Independent Distributors who provided information about their weight-loss programs and results. Distributors reported weight loss in a range from 4 pounds to 167 pounds and a reduced body mass index (BMI) of 1.5 points to 24.1 points, suggesting that ongoing consumption of Herbalife® products is associated with weight loss in that range, with a corresponding improvement in BMI.
