In 1994, Machine Head crashed into the metal scene with Burn My Eyes, an album that to this day is regarded as a classic of the genre. At a time when metal was being pushed back underground by grunge and punk, it was an album we could all get behind, and “Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast” became a mantra for the day. They even got to tour with Slayer on the Divine Intervention tour, further solidifying their status as THE band to watch. The fires had cooled a bit by 1997 when they released The More Things Change, which was accepted with a lukewarm reaction by fans who liked it but felt it was a huge step down from their debut. The downward slide continued through the ill-fated The Burning Red and the perhaps unfairly criticized Supercharger, periods marked by the loss of original members Logan Mader and Chris Kontos, but founding members Robb Flynn and Adam Duce were unflinching, recruiting guitarist Ahrue Luster and hard-hitting drummer Dave McClain into the band for those latter albums.

Then in 2003, something amazing happened. Following Luster's departure, Flynn recruited his former Vio-lence bandmate Phil Demmel to join the band on lead guitar, reuniting one of the most blistering guitar duos in metal history. The resulting album, Through the Ashes of Empires, was released on an unsuspecting public to almost unanimous praise. While some fans were beyond saving, many hailed it as a return to form, or at least a step in the right direction. Several critics even proclaimed that it surpassed their legendary debut. Once again, the band toured vigorously in support over the next year or so before settling down to craft their masterwork. Popping up for the occasional live gig in the summer of 2006, “Aesthetics of Hate” pummeled audiences with it’s sheer brutality, proving the band still had plenty of gas left in the engine. Fans had to be wondering “Will the entire new album be like this?” The answer is a resounding yes, as The Blackening is easily the band’s best work since Burn My Eyes - possibly even better.

“Clenching the Fists of Dissent” is the perfect album opener. After a slow, mellow introduction, the band put the pedal to the metal and bulldoze forward a thrashy main riff gives way to bridge and chorus sections that have those signature Machine Head beatdowns. Toss in a methodical midsection that gives you time to think about what’s coming next, follow that with some blistering solos that lead you right back into the main verse riff, and after a mere 10 minutes it’s all over – but only seems like half that. “Beautiful Morning” may not have been the best track to put next, more midtempo and mellow. Hardly a weak track, but definitely a letdown after the opener. “Aesthetics of Hate” changes that in a hurry. The much talked about track lashes out at a conservative journalist who claimed that Dimebag got what he deserved and that all of his fans were a bunch of Neanderthals. Needless to say, Flynn and Co. have never sounded so pissed off, and this competes with “Slanderous”, where Flynn gives a middle finger to all the antagonists he has faced in his life, for the heaviest track on the album.

“Now I Lay Thee Down” is another more mid-paced track but is played in a way that slowly elevates through verse and bridge before unleashing the fury in the choruses. The next three tracks will take you about a half hour to get through, so make sure you’re prepared. “Halo” sounds an awful lot like the Machine Head of old, complete with those guitar squeals we all remember. “Wolves” is relentless in attack, and one starts to fear that the band is going to break themselves in half. The disc ends with “A Farewell to Arms”, an epic in every sense of the world, weaving through tempo and emotional changes to an ultimately exhilarating finish.

Before wrapping it up, I might as well address the cover art issue. A lot of “heavier than thou” folk claimed that they ripped off the concept from some black metal band that most people probably don’t give a rat’s ass about. Truth be told, it is simply a reproduction of a metal carving used in old times by the church to instill fear and conformity from the people. It’s a skeleton king sitting on a rock with his foot upon the Earth, holding a mirror engraved with the words ‘The Mirror Which Flatters Not’. It was symbolic of looking at yourself and not liking what you see, and that’s what The Blackening is all about – holding a mirror up to the world and not liking what is seen. War, corrupt politicians, conservative douchebags, high gas prices – what IS there to like? Oh yeah – this album.

The Blackening is to Machine Head what Shovel Headed Kill Machine was to Exodus: better than anyone ever could have thought after the great album that preceded it. The circumstances were different but the end results the same: a veteran band left for dead come back to kick your ass and hand it to you pre-soiled. This is the best album I’ve heard thus far this young year, and I’m not expecting any contenders for awhile.

Metallica's first album. Originally released on Megaforce. Record shop owner Jon Zazula really liked this fresh young band and tried to get them a record contract. When this fails, he founds his own record label, Megaforce, and signs Metallica as his first band. The working title on this album was "Metal up your ass", but as the record distributors didn't want to distribute an album with such a name, they called it Kill 'em all, which means Kill all the record distributors. The album was recorded in May 83, and had its top position at #120 on Billboard in February of 1988. Collectors look out for the double LP set with gatefold sleeve, and the limited edition with two bonus tracks.

JUMP IN THE FIRE - Maxi single

In February 84 Metallica visited Europe for the first time. They went on a tour supporting Venom. During this trip, the British label, Music for Nations, released the 'Jump in the Fire' EP to promote the tour. The live tracks is recorded in the studio, and they have added some crowd noise to give it a live feeling. Jump in the fire was originally only released in Europe.

Most of the material on this album is written in October, November and December 83, and it was released in the US by Megaforce 27 July 84. Collectors should look out for the double vinyl set released by Music For Nations, and the French missprint. This cover has green inc instead of blue, so it looks kind of strange. The Australian gold CD and the picture disc is also hard to find items

MASTER OF PUPPETS - Album

Metallica started to record this album in Denmark September 85, and ended the recording session with Flemming Rasmussen 27 December same year. It saw the light of day in Mars 86, and this was a total different album compared to the two first, both lyrically and musically. There is a lot of cool version of this album. Look out for the double album. The tree first album was re-released by Music For Nations as double discs, but it is only Master of puppets which comes with a poster.

GARAGE DAYS - EP

Garage Days Re-Revisited was released in October 87 to introduce Jason, their new bass player, to the fans. One of the tracks was left off the British version so it could qualify for the singles chart. In Japan they included the lyrics, a biography as well as a large poster. This is a really great disc featuring only cover tunes by old favourites. Garage Days is now out of print and can be hard to find.

ONE - single

The first major single release by Metallica, and also the first one with a video. It has The Prince as B-side in the US, while some live tracks recorded in Dallas on February 5th 1989 was put on the European releases, as The Prince already appeared on Harvester Of Sorrow there. There is a lot of box sets out there with collections of ordinary singles or albums, but this is the only one put out by the band, or should I say their record company as Lars didn't like this box set. «It is done by the company to make some extra dollars» Lars said in an interview, «If you don't have the new live tracks, tape it from a friend». The box contains a poster and the following EPs. Metallica got a hell lot of new fans with this album. You understand that it is a good album when you see how many singles are. Vertigo UK released a tin can with the CD, a video and a T-shirt. They did 35.000 copies of this, so it might still be possible to find. There is a bonus on this album as well in Japan,- So What. The cover is almost totally black, but this isn't the first all-black Metallica cover. The two Collectors editions of One, and the EP box set released two years earlier was all-black as well. So from late 1989 to autumn 1992 all Metallica covers where dark as night.

A ballad. The fans hated that there were two ballads on the black album. «They have sold out» the die hard fans said, but haven't we heard that before. They said that when Ride The Lightning was released as well, «Fade To Black» is a ballad too remember. Killing time was chosen for the B-side this time. Metallica also recorded this track way back in 1982 on a demotape when they were a three piece band.

These 3 tracks are recorded live at the Fredy Merqury tribute show at Wembley Stadium after he died of AIDS at April 20. It was mixed by Flemming Rasmussen the same day, and the day after, and this single was released only a few days later. This tape was given to the visitors at a record store on Manhattan on January 21st 93, when Metallica turned the whole store into a Metallistore. The Phlangulator is a 3 osc flange synth meshed with a waveshaper for nice distortions and weird effects. The oscillators are pretty much static with the exception of seperate pulse width control for each one and waveform selection. The oscillators are run through an enveloped sv-filter and then from their on into the waveshaper where the sound can be really tweaked. Before running through the amp the mix is then run through a flanger which can be shut off by turning it's mix slider all the way down. The next version will feature seperate pitch knobs for each oscillator and a preset bank.
