"I really admire Marc, how he lives his career, how aggressive he is, and how he always pushes to the limit," praised Aspar.

What blows Aspar away is Marquez's mental strength in bouncing back from severe injuries. "He has crashed many times and always managed to bounce back after injuries. In my opinion, he is a rider worth studying from a mental standpoint. He has incredible strength," he stated.

The most interesting statement was when Aspar compared their physical and mental endurance when facing severe injuries. Honestly, Aspar doubts whether Rossi could have been as strong as Marquez if he had to endure the same storm of injuries.

"I am sure Valentino also has an incredible mentality, but I don't think he would have been able to get through the injuries Marc went through. I am very sure of that," Aspar concluded.

Jakarta (OPM) - Banyak produsen laptop menyuguhkan spesifikasi mumpuni guna menghasilkan daya tarik untuk konsumen. Namun, harga yang terlampau tinggi bisa membuat hambatan tersendiri terkait penjualan laptop.

Salah satu produsen laptop asal Taiwan, Asus menghadirkan laptop seri Asus X550IU dengan prosesor AMD FX-9830P generasi ke-7 serta didukung kekuatan grafis AMD Radeon RX 460.

Dilihat dari sisi harga dan spesifikasi RAM 8GB, perangkat komputer mobile dengan layar 15,6 inci ini tampak setara dengan HP Pavilion 15-P017AU (layar sentuh). Namun, keduanya sama-sama diperkuat prosesor AMD (berbeda seri) serta layar yang sedikit lebih besar pada tipe Asus X550IU.

Desain

Dari sisi desain, Asus X550IU tampil dengan bodi yang cukup besar karena memang layar yang cukup luas (15,6 inci) serta dibalut dengan warna hitam. Uniknya, laptop ini memiliki guratan-guratan bergaya printed circuit board (PCB), sehingga membuatnya tampak gahar.

Permukaan cover terlihat mengkilap sekaligus licin dengan logo khas Asus di bagian tengah. Pada bagian dalam atau bidang permukaan keyboard, masih mempertahankan kesan artistik bergaya PCB dengan garis-garis berwarna merah.

Tombol keyboard sengaja mengusung warna oranye yang terlihat lebih menyolok dengan latar hitam pada tombol-tombol keyboard-nya. Asus juga menyediakan 'key number' pada bagian kanan keyboard.

Kesan berat tidak terelakan dari laptop ini, karena Asus pun menyematkan fitur DVD RW di bagian sisi, membuatnya terlihat tebal. Meskipun demikian, perangkat memiliki sirkulasi udara yang baik dengan ventilasi atau pembuangan udara di bagian sisi.

Fitur

Salah satu fitur yang disematkan pada X550IU ialah Instan On. Fitur ini memungkinkan perangkat dapat dipakai kembali dengan cepat (2 detik) setelah laptop dalam posisi mati layar.

Selain itu, perangkat didukung dengan teknologi USB 3.0, yang memungkinkan perangkat mentransfer file 10 kali lipat lebih cepat ketimbang USB 2.0. Dengan teknologi ini, memungkinkan file sebesar 25GB (film kualitas Blu-ray) untuk dapat ditransfer dalam waktu 70 detik.

Mexico clashes leave seven police officers dead

Gunmen have ambushed and shot dead seven policemen in two separate clashes in western Mexico, officials have said.

Attackers opened fire as police responded to reports of a traffic accident in a rural area of Michoacan state, killing four officers.
Three officers and a civilian were killed in another attack in the neighbouring state of Jalisco.
It was not clear who was behind the killings but the region has been plagued by drug-related violence.
The Knights Templar and New Generation drug cartels vie for control of the illegal drugs trade in Michoacan.
The first attack happened in Brisenas, a small town on the border with Jalisco, where earlier this month the police chief and three other officials were kidnapped by unidentified attackers and are still missing.
According to officials, gunmen ambushed officers on Sunday as they drove to a reported road accident. Four officers were killed and five others injured.

A short while later, attackers opened fire on police in Ayotlan in Jalisco state, killing three officers and a civilian.
Some 60,000 people have died across Mexico since 2006 when the previous government under Felipe Calderon deployed the military against the drugs gangs.
Earlier this month, President Enrique Pena Nieto announced the creation of a new national force as part of continuing efforts to tackle crime and violence.
Mr Pena Nieto, who took office on 1 December, said the new militarised force would initially be 10,000 strong.

Nigeria: Blaze hits Lagos after fireworks blast

Rescue teams are reported to have had difficulties getting to the scene of the fire

An explosion in a warehouse has sparked a major fire in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city and commercial capital.

The country's emergency services said a fireworks store in the busy market area of Lagos Island exploded, and the blaze quickly spread to other buildings.
The blast reportedly shook windows of homes miles away and a thick cloud of smoke could be seen over the island.
It was not immediately clear if there were any fatalities nor what the cause of the fire was.
The BBC's Tomi Oladipo, in Lagos, says he saw people with shrapnel wounds some distance from the fire and that it is quite likely anyone closer would have been worse affected.

The Nigerian Red Cross said it had treated at least 30 people, AFP news agency reported.
Thousands of people in the area gathered to watch, as the fire destroyed neighbouring buildings.
Our correspondent said emergency services had problems reaching the scene of the fire because of the huge crowds, and did not arrive until about an hour after the blast.

Kenya says AU forces storm Somali rebel city of Kismayo

African Union (AU) forces have launched a beach assault and taken control of parts of Kismayo, the last major stronghold in Somalia held by Islamist militants, Kenya's military says.

The port city has been a bastion of the al-Qaeda-aligned group al-Shabab.

Al-Shabab spokesmen told news agencies that fierce fighting was now under way.

The Kenyan troops are part of the AU's Amisom force, which is trying to wrest control of the country for the newly elected UN-backed president.

Kenyan military spokesman Col Cyrus Oguna confirmed to the BBC that parts of Kismayo had been captured and the rest was expected to fall soon.

Col Oguna said the joint operation of Kenyan Defence Forces and Somali government troops had begun at 02:00 local time (23:00 GMT Thursday) and was "basically amphibious".

Col Oguna said: "We cannot give casualty figures at the moment, the damage has not been assessed, but I can tell you our forces are already in Kismayo."

He told the BBC: "There are some parts that still will be under the control of al-Shabab because we only got there a couple of hours ago, and Kismayo is a big city."

Amisom released a statement saying it had "successfully inserted" troops "to liberate the people of Kismayo to enable them to lead their lives in peace, stability and security".

It urged "all fighters remaining in Kismayo to lay down their arms".

Reinforcements were being sent, the statement said.

Checkpoints

Al-Shabab spokesmen said fierce clashes were taking place.

Al-Shabab commander in Kismayo, Sheik Mohamed Abu-Fatuma, told Agence France-Presse news agency: "The enemy using military boats have deployed hundreds of soldiers in the coast late last night and the mujahideen fighters are engaging heavy fighting now with them. God willing they will be defeated."

Mohamed Mohamed, of the BBC's Somalia Service, has spoken to residents of Kismayo, who said four military ships had approached from the north, landed and captured territory around the university.

Checkpoints were set up, with one eyewitness reporting that the AU forces appeared to include American or European troops. There have been numerous reports of US special forces operating against the Islamist militants in Somalia.

However, the US Africa command said on Friday it was "not participating in Kenya's military activities in the region".

The Kismayo residents told the BBC they had seen no Kenyan or Somali government forces inside the city proper.

Other residents told Reuters news agency they could hear fighting outside the city.

One, Ismail Suglow, told the agency: "Al-Shabab have gone towards the beach. Many residents have taken their guns. The ships poured many AU troops on the beach."

There are also reports that helicopters are attacking the town.

The al-Shabab-controlled radio station is still said to be on air.

Al-Shabab also used a Twitter account to say its forces were still in control of the city.

Earlier this week, Kenyan military jets had bombed the airport in Kismayo, destroying an armoury and warehouse used by Islamist militants.

Some 10,000 people have fled Kismayo in the past week, the United Nations refugee agency has estimated.

On Thursday, leaflets were dropped urging remaining civilians to evacuate.

BBC World Service News Africa editor, Martin Plaut, says al-Shabab has tried to halt the exodus and has urged civilians to join their fight.

He says the advance by Kenyan forces, Somali government troops and the pro-government Ras Kambone militia has been delayed as all roads into the city had to be swept inch by inch for mines. This, our correspondent says, explains the attack from the sea.

Kismayo has helped al-Shabab generate millions of dollars from charcoal exports, the UN says, despite a Security Council ban on countries buying such goods from Somalia.

African Union troops pushed al-Shabab from the capital, Mogadishu, in August 2011 and have been slowly taking control of other towns since.

However, the militants are still highly active in much of the countryside in south and central Somalia.

Kenya began its intervention in Somalia nearly a year ago after a spate of cross-border attacks blamed on al-Shabab.

Since the overthrow of President Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia has seen clan-based warlords, Islamist militants and its neighbours all battling for control.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake is a new breed of vehicle that fits firmly in the ‘sporty estate’ club that premium car manufacturers are now keen to exploit. There’s clearly something appealing about a fast five-door. It’s the classic ‘you can have it all’ model, offering practicality and performance in one slick package.

Mercedes-Benz isn’t holding back on the hyperbole either, claiming that the CLS Shooting Brake is ‘automotive independence at its most beautiful’. That’s arguable since the concept of ‘automotive independence’ is as nebulous as it comes, and beauty, well… that’s in the eye of the beholder. It’s called a Shooting Brake which, to the person on the street, is essentially a coupe with a tailgate. A sort of jumped-up estate, if you will.Inside the CLS there are five seats but the middle seat is a token gesture and only fit for small people. It’s not much more expensive than the Coupe and the go-faster AMG versions are only slightly more expensive than their four-door equivalents.

Quality interior

There’s no doubting the CLS Shooting Brake is a classy piece of kit that’ll appeal to the well-heeled. There’s loads of hand-stitched leather, a luggage compartment lined with high-quality carpet and if you want to really set yourself even further apart from the proletariat you can fit optional designer aluminium loading rails or a curiously described ‘designo’ wooden luggage compartment floor. Cherry tree wood has been harvested for the CLS and it combines with the inlaid smoked oak and aluminium rails in the boot. This is the sort of stuff you see on yachts, so if you’re moderately loaded you’ll feel positively Abramovich-esque if you buy one of these and feel satisfied that your boot looks like a boat deck.

The Shooting Brake offers five interior colours, five trim designs and three qualities of leather to choose from. Customers have a choice of three exclusive wood types: high-gloss brown burr walnut, high-gloss black ash and satin-finish light-brown poplar. A completely new addition comes in the form of porcelain interior detailing and that’s alongside a mixture of satin and high-gloss finishes used on the metal surfaces.

Practicality and performance

In terms of practicality, it’s pretty imperious. The boot offers 590 litres of stowage space with the rear seats up and 1,550 litres with them down. That’s bigger than a standard C-Class Estate, but nowhere near an E-Class though. An optional trailer coupling is also available.

Choice of engines

The entry-level model is the CLS250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY which produces 201bhp. Combined fuel consumption is 53.3 mpg with CO2 emissions of 139g/km and a 0-62mph time of 7.8 seconds. There’s also a six-cylinder model: the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. It produces 261bhp, returns 47mpg, emits 161g/km of CO2 and accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. Then there’s the rather more bonkers 5.5-litre petrol-engined 63 AMG version that goes like a bullet.

Safety systems

More than a dozen driving assistance systems to prevent traffic accidents and reduce the severity of a collision are included. Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist are available as part of the Driving Assistance package, in combination with Distronic Plus and the Pre-Safe system that preps the car if it thinks an accident is imminent. Both assistance systems are not only able to detect an unintentional lane-change or vehicles in the blind spot, but they can also correct the direction of travel by gentle brake intervention if the driver ignores the visual or audible danger warnings.

2013 Ram Heavy Duty First Look

As they're coming just a month after the debut of the updated 2013 Ram 1500, it's no surprise that the new 2013 Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 models share the light-duty truck's good looks. More important, though, is what Ram has done under the sheetmetal. Updates to nearly every major component have Ram claiming best-in-class towing, payload, frontal load, and gross vehicle weight rating.

The updates you'll be most interested in are under the hood. The biggest news for serious haulers is that the vaunted Cummins diesel now comes in three flavors. The lowest output version makes a stout 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque and comes with the only six-speed manual transmission in the segment. That's an improvement of 50 lb-ft from last year's stick-shift diesel, and it's matched with a new "wear-compensating" clutch that's supposed to feel like new until the day you finally wear it out.

If you don't feel like rowing your own, or you need more power, the second option will net you 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque routed through a six-speed automatic. For those not willing to simply upgrade to a Peterbilt, the "High-Output" Cummins cranks out 385 horsepower and an even more ridiculous 850 lb-ft of torque and puts it through a new Aisin six-speed automatic.

Even more important than all that for you serious truckers, though, is the addition of Diesel Exhaust Fluid. For a few years, Ram guys were able to boast that their diesels didn't have to worry about running out of DEF, but no more. The on-demand system features a heated tank for cold climates and, unlike some competitors, won't cut engine power when fluid runs low. You'll still have to refill it, though. The fill port is located right next to the capless diesel fuel filler.

The upgraded diesel has other tricks up its sleeve. All the cooling systems, from the engine to the transmission to the intercooler to the exhaust gas recirculation system, have been upgraded. A selective catalyst reduction system can also be added and is compatible with B-20 biodiesel. On the other end, a new Active Air Intake system can pull air from the front of the truck, under the hood away from snow, or both for maximum power and efficiency. Add it all together and Ram claims fuel economy will jump 10 percent and oil changes can be stretched to 15,000 miles.

The 5.7-liter Hemi gasoline V-8 engine is now available on both the 2500 and 3500 models and continues to produce 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, meaning it didn't get the same bump as the 1500. In either 2500 or 3500 trucks, it comes only with the six-speed automatic gearbox.

The improvements aren't just in the engine bay. Ram has also beefed up the drivetrain with a new 11.8-inch rear axle and a front axle that automatically disconnects to reduce drag in the drivetrain and pick up an extra mile per gallon. Two new Borg Warner transfer cases are available, either manual or automatic, and each features a 2.64 crawling ratio and a locking differential.

Making use of all that power requires a sturdy frame. To beef things up, Ram added more cross-members, widened the front rails, and fully boxed the rears. A factory installed rear cross-member includes provisions for gooseneck and fifth-wheel hitches. The conventional hitch at the rear has been upgraded to a Class 5 and can pull an astonishing 17,000 pounds with up to 1800 pounds on the tongue. Also attached to the frame are a new three-link front suspension and a Hotchkiss leaf spring rear suspension that up the payload and gross vehicle weight ratings, though Ram won't tell us yet how much. "Best-in-class" is all it'll say. Keeping the load in check is a standard electronic stability control program and an upgraded steering rack.

For fleet buyers, Ram adds a vehicle system interface module that allows easy access to the truck's electrical systems for factory and aftermarket modules to monitor performance and maintenance. Ram even went so far as to move the badges off the door so they'd be out of the way of your company's logo. Did we mention all these upgrades also apply to 3500, 4500, and 5500 commercial chassis-cab trucks? Those also claim best-in-class gross axle weight ratings on the 4500 and 5500 as well as the largest fuel tanks and brakes in the class and a best-in-class dual 220-amp alternator charging system.

Clearly, then, there's something for everyone on the new Heavy Duty Ram. It looks better; it's got more features; it's got more power; and it can tow and haul more than ever before. Throw in a claimed best-in-class powertrain warranty of five years or 100,000 miles, and what more could a truck guy ask for?

The all-new 2014 A3Sportback is the star of Audi's show here at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

This is the second iteration of the all-new A3 to be seen. Yes, it looks a lot like the old one, but it's an all-new car underneath, one that is much more economical, bigger and better-quality inside — and, we're told, more able on the road.

Also on display are the RS 5 Cabriolet, the impeccably finished and detailed S3 300-horsepower premium hot hatch, and the face-lifted R8. No surprises here.

However, Audi did shock onlookers with its concept car, the Crosslane. It features a futuristic aluminum and carbon-fiber space-frame chassis that's designed to leave key structural elements on show. It's partly born through frustration from the engineers; Audi has all this futuristic technology, a spokesman told us, but nobody knows about it because the car bodies hide it all.

The Crosslane concept showcases this technology using minimized body panels and on-display structural parts such as the distinctive Audi grille.

Cargo plane hits bus in Ghana airport crash

A cargo plane has crash landed in Ghana's capital Accra, hitting a bus full of passengers, officials say.

Ten passengers on board the bus were reported to have been killed while all four crew members survived.

Local TV showed the heavily damaged Boeing 727 Allied Air plane lying across a road close to Kotoka International Airport.

Ghana's airport operator said the plane, which had flown from Lagos, Nigeria, overshot the runway.

It said in a statement that the four crew members were receiving treatment at an airport clinic.

"The aircraft collided with a minivan, resulting in 10 confirmed fatalities," the statement added.

Police and troops cordoned off the scene following the incident just after 19:00 GMT on Saturday.

Ghana's Vice President John Dramani Mahama told reporters at the airport that a thorough investigation would be carried out.

"No early conclusions should be drawn. We should allow investigations to arrive at the actual cause. But I can assure Ghanaians that the situation is under control," he said.

Ghana Airport Company said flights were continuing as normal at the airport.

Kofi Kportufe, head of Ghana's national disaster management agency, praised the emergency services for their quick response, which he said had "averted further disaster".

"This is a sad day for Ghana," he said.

Protests erupt in Egypt over Hosni Mubarak verdicts

Protests have continued overnight in Cairo's Tahrir Square, after ex-President Hosni Mubarak was jailed for life for his part in the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolution.

The crowds are furious at the acquittal of key security officials who were on trial alongside Mubarak.

Four interior ministry officials and two local security chiefs were cleared of complicity in protesters' killings.

Rallies against the verdict were also held in Alexandria, Suez and Mansoura.

Correspondents say a verdict that was meant to bring closure for Egypt is in danger of reopening old wounds.

In another development, dozens of protesters stormed the campaign headquarters of presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq in the Fayoum area south of Cairo, Egyptian media reported.

Mr Shafiq was Mubarak's last prime minister.

Verdict 'mocks us'

Some protesters at Tahrir Square, the focal point of last year's uprising, say they are determined to begin a sit-in.

They have been joined by prominent public figures and football fans known as Ultras, who have been implicated in a number of political confrontations.

The slogan from last year's uprising: "Down with the military rule" is being chanted in the square and many have vociferously condemned Saturday's verdict.

The BBC's Yolande Knell, at the square, says there is particular anger at the acquittals of the officials, which many take as a sign that there has been little reform.

"The Mubarak verdict mocks us. He and [former Interior Minister Habib] Adly got a sentence and their aides got nothing," protester Sharif Ali told the BBC. "When they return to court on appeal, they will be freed too."

But, our correspondent adds, others have poured on to the streets out of depression at the current political situation.

The first round of recent presidential elections has left Egyptians with a choice between an Islamist candidate and an ex-prime minister from the Mubarak era.

Scuffles in court

The 84-year-old former president is the first former leader to be tried in person since the start of the Arab Spring in early 2011.

Announcing the verdicts, Judge Ahmed Refaat said Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly had failed to stop security forces using deadly force against unarmed demonstrators. They were both given life terms.

The judge insisted that the 10-month trial had been fair.

He said the Mubarak era had been "30 years of darkness" and praised what he called "the sons of the nation who rose up peacefully for freedom and justice".

Mubarak and his two sons, Alaa and Gamal, were acquitted on separate charges of corruption. But his sons will remain in detention as they are to be charged with stock-market manipulation.

After the verdict, scuffles erupted in court. Outside, sentencing was initially greeted by celebrations, but anger soon took over when news of the acquittals spread.

State television reported that as he was being transferred to jail, Mubarak at first refused to leave the helicopter and then suffered from severe health problems. He has reportedly been admitted to the prison hospital.

Mubarak, who ruled the country from 1981 to 2011, had faced a possible death sentence over the killing of about 850 protesters.

The first leader toppled during the Arab Spring was Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia, who was found guilty in absentia of drugs and gun charges in July.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was killed by rebels in October. Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh received immunity from prosecution after handing over power in November.

Mexican navy finds fake uniforms for use by drug gangs

The security forces in Mexico have raided a workshop making fake Mexican military uniforms and body armour.

Officials said the uniforms were used by Mexican drug cartels to set up road blocks and carry out kidnappings.

They said the uniforms made it easier for criminals to approach their victims, who did not realise they were being targeted until it was too late.

President Felipe Calderon deployed the military six years ago to help fight Mexico's drug gangs.

Marines found the workshop in the northern town of Piedras Negras across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas, after receiving an anonymous tip-off.

They seized hundreds of combat trousers and shirts, as well as body armour, some with the Marine logo.

A Navy spokesman said the find showed "criminal groups wanted to discredit the Navy" by wearing their uniforms while committing crimes.

Over the past months, the security forces have arrested a number of alleged cartel hitmen wearing counterfeit uniforms.

More than 50,000 people are estimated to have been killed in drug-related violence since President Calderon came to power and declared war on the drug cartels in 2006.

Nearly 700 people have been detained in two Quebec cities in the biggest single night of mass arrests since student protests over fees began in February.

Police invoked a controversial new law designed to curb demonstrations as they detained 518 people in Montreal and another 176 in Quebec City.

The protests against a planned rise in tuition charges escalated after Bill 78 passed last week.

The Quebec government insists it will not change its mind on the fee hike.

The march in Montreal late on Wednesday began peacefully, as several thousand demonstrators flooded the central square of Quebec's largest city.

Police later penned in the protest - adopting a controversial European police tactic known as "kettling" - after reporting they had been pelted with rocks and other projectiles.

Those arrested were released on Thursday and issued with fines of more than C$600 (£370), AFP news agency reports.

Authorities invoked Bill 78, which requires eight hours' notification before public demonstrations.

Bill 78, passed last Friday, requires marches to follow pre-approved routes, but protesters say it infringes their democratic rights, and have pledged to legally contest it.

Since the passing of the public assembly law, more than 300 people were arrested overnight at a protest in Montreal last Sunday and another 100 were detained in the city on Tuesday.

Quebec currently has the lowest tuition rates in Canada, but the government's proposal would raise the fees by 80%, in increments of $254 per year (£160) for seven years.

Talks between the government and student unions have broken down several times.

Ten Pakistan protesters killed by gunmen in Karachi

At least 10 people have died after gunmen opened fire on a political rally in Pakistan's volatile southern port city of Karachi, police say.

Thirty-five other people - including two journalists - were injured.

The procession was made up of ethnic parties who were denouncing proposals for a new province to be created for the Urdu-speaking urban majority.

Hundreds of people have been killed in Karachi - in the southern Sindh province - since January 2012.

Karachi has long suffered outbreaks of violence, either carried out by the Taliban, criminal elements or because of turf wars between rival political and ethnic groups.

At least 800 people died in politically motivated attacks in the city last year.

Ethnic Sindhis, who mostly live in rural areas, have warned that attempts to divide the southern province of Sindh could lead to widespread violence.

Shafiq Baloch, who was taking part in Tuesday's rally, told the BBC the shootings happened as marchers approached the city centre.

"As soon as we crossed the street, we were fired on. I cannot tell you how many of our young men got injured. You can see my bloodied clothes as I have picked up many bodies myself."

Several shops and about a dozen vehicles were set on fire after the shootings, and the security forces were attacked.

The BBC's Syed Shoaib Hasan in the city says that the violence began when the sound of gunfire reverberated around Karachi, forcing terror-stricken marchers to seek cover in narrow lanes and alleyways.

Our correspondent says that in the aftermath of the attack the marchers turned into rioters, but now the disturbances have been brought under control.

However, tension is expected to resurface on Wednesday, when political parties participating in the rally have called for a strike.

The rally was a response to recent demands for a separate province for the Muhajir Urdu-speaking ethnic group. The group dominates much of urban Sindh - including Karachi - through the MQM political party.

MQM leaders deny they have anything to do with the demand for a separate province - although they maintain Karachi should remain administratively separate from Sindh.

This stance is opposed by Sindhi nationalist groups and has led to increasing turmoil in the city.

Montreal crowds mark 100 days of student protest

'Massive, collective disobedience'

Most of Tuesday's protesters followed a route submitted to police in advance, in accordance with the emergency bill.

However, some protesters linked with Classe, a student group with a no-compromise reputation, chose to defy the law and break away from the crowds.

Classe also said it would continue to agitate through the summer, a time of year when Montreal hosts outdoor festivals and attracts large numbers of tourists.

"Thousands of people have come to demonstrate with us, not only against the rise in tuition rates but with the intention to signal their disapproval of the special law," Classe leader Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois told the Associated Press news agency.

"The gesture made by tens of thousands is one of massive and collective civil disobedience."

But Quebec's minister of public safety, Robert Dutil, countered that many cities - including Geneva, New York, Los Angeles and Toronto - have implemented comparable legislation.

"Other societies with rights and freedoms to protect have found it reasonable to impose certain constraints, first of all to protect protesters, and also to protect the public," Mr Dutil told reporters.

The bill requires activists to provide the police with eight hours' notice of when and where protests are planned to take place, or face heavy fines.

Small protests took place in New York and Paris on Tuesday in solidarity with the movement in Montreal.
In Quebec, the provincial government has not backed away from the proposed increases of tuition fees, and Premier Jean Charest has been criticised by opposition parties for his handling of the protests.

Mr Charest must call an election before 2013.
